WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team will make its final entry into 2019 this weekend, heading to the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois for the 57th-Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The prestigious event, hosted by Big Ten Conference rival Northwestern, will welcome 10 of the top-25 tournament teams in the NCAA and potentially 86 nationally-ranked individuals for the two-day tournament.
“We’re ready to get back to competing,” said Purdue head coach Tony Ersland. “Midlands is always one of the better tournaments every year, and we’re excited to head back up there as a team. Everyone got their holiday break, and now it’s time to get tuned up for the Big Ten dual season.”
PURDUE LINEUP & RANKINGS
With five individuals ranked in the top-10 at their respective weight classes, the Boilermakers hold a tournament ranking between No. 11 and 13 in the various polls. However, the lineup remains without freshman Emil Soehnlen at 165 pounds and Purdue may be without 184-pound junior Max Lyon after he injury defaulted from his match at SIUE on Dec. 19.

Purdue wrapped up its non-conference dual schedule before the holiday break, posting a 35-9 victory at Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Dec. 19. The Boilermakers took eight-of-10 matches, including five bonus-point victories, three falls, an overtime thriller and an upset over a ranked opponent. Junior Devin Schroder, freshman Travis Ford-Melton and senior Christian Brunner accounted for the falls, Ford-Melton’s coming in just 12 seconds, the Boilermakers’ fastest this season. Junior Griffin Parriott had to dig out of an early hole to secure a 12-10 decision in the tie-breaker period, and freshman Thomas Penola picked up his biggest career win since moving up to heavyweight, knocking off No. 17 Colton McKiernan 7-3 in the dual finale.
PURDUE NOTES
• The Boilermakers have five individuals ranked in the top-10 of their respective weight classes, marking the first time Purdue has had three or more in the top-10 since Feb. 8, 2011, when Luke Manuel, A.J. Kissel and Logan Brown were tabbed No. 8, No. 8 and No. 10, respectively by InterMat.
• Purdue’s team tournament rankings, tabbed No. 11 by TrackWrestling and WIN Magazine, No. 12 by FloWrestling and InterMat and No. 13 by TheOpenMat, are the program’s highest since 1998.
• Lydy has been ranked in 41 straight polls dating to Dec. 4, 2017, currently holding his highest career rankings across the board, and is currently the highest-ranked Boilermaker since Ben Wissel held the No. 3 national ranking in 2006.
• Lydy leads the Boilermakers and is tied for fourth in the NCAA with six major decisions in 2019-20, two off the national leader (via wrestlestat.com).
• A two-time Big Ten Wrestler of the Week this season, Lydy has surrendered just one takedown in 15 matches, including zero at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
• Lydy enters Midlands just five wins shy of 100 for his career, aiming to become the 17th wrestler in program history to hit the century mark.
• Schroder has also ascended to his top career ranking, rising as high as No. 5 at 125 pounds in the NCAA and earning the top mark at the weight by a Boilermaker since Chris Fleeger was No. 1 in the land in 2003.
