Jackrabbits split on Day 1 of South Beach Duals
12/29/2019 | Wrestling
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The South Dakota State University wrestling team split a pair of duals against first-time opponents Sunday on the opening day of the South Beach Duals. In what was a busy day on the mats in two different locations, the Jackrabbits were edged by 18th-ranked Cornell, 18-16, then bounced back in dominating fashion for a 41-3 victory over Duke.

SDSU moved to 2-3 in duals on the season and will wrestle Michigan State (11 a.m. ET) and Old Dominion (1 p.m. ET) on Monday.

Versus Cornell
The Big Red won three of the final four matches to record an 18-16 victory in a back-and-forth matchup that pitted SDSU head coach Damion Hahn against the program for which he served as an assistant coach for 12 years.

With the Jackrabbits holding a 16-12 lead with two matches remaining, Cornell turned the tide in its favor in the 197-pound bout. Ben Darmstadt, ranked seventh at 184 pounds, wrestled up a weight class and recorded a 5-4 victory over the Jackrabbits' 19th-ranked Tanner Sloan.

Brendan Furman completed the comeback for Cornell by notching a 5-0 shutout of Blake Wolters in the heavyweight matchup.

Danny Vega gave SDSU an early 4-0 lead with a 14-6 major decision over Dominic LaJoie at 125 pounds. Clay Carlson added a 6-4 decision for the Jackrabbits at 141 pounds over Noah Baughman.

Cornell gained its first lead of the match, 9-7 at the halfway mark, winning decisions at 149 and 157 pounds.

Newcomer Tanner Cook, wrestling in his first collegiate dual, built the Jackrabbit lead back to four points, 13-9, with a first-period pin over Milik Dawkins in the 165-pound matchup.

Zach Carlson, ranked 17th by FloWrestling, posted the final victory of the dual for SDSU with an 8-5 decision over Jonathan Loew in the 184-pound matchup.

Versus Duke
The Jackrabbits won nine of 10 matches, recording bonus-point victories in six of the bouts, en route to a 41-3 drubbing of Duke.

SDSU picked up bonus points in each of the first three bouts as Vega won by forfeit, Zach Price won by technical fall at 133 pounds and Clay Carlson earned his second victory of the day, winning by a first-period fall.

The Jackrabbits extended their lead to 24-0 as Peyton Smith (149 pounds), Colten Carlson (157) and Garrett Jordan (165) all won by decision. After having his comeback bid come up short in his first match of the day, Smith scored all five points in the third period of his match against Duke's Wade Unger to pull out a 7-5 decision for his first collegiate dual victory.

Zach Carlson won by pin for his second win of the day at 184 pounds, while Sloan got back into the win column with an 18-0 technical fall win in the 197-pound weight class.
