No. 22 Rutgers Wrestling Drops Tight Home Dual to No. 19 Cornell, 18-16

Program unveils NCAA title banners for Ashnault, Suriano

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 17, 2020) – Despite wins in its final four bouts, Rutgers wrestling (7-2, 2-1) dropped a tight dual against No. 19 Cornell (6-4, 1-1), 18-16, on Friday night in front of 4,592 fans at the RAC. Billy Janzer (184) collected his third consecutive win against a ranked foe with his 10-6 decision over No. 19 (Intermat) Jonathan Loew to highlight action for the Scarlet Knights, who also saw victories from Nicolas Aguilar (125), Joseph Grello (174), No. 18 Jordan Pagano (197) and Alex Esposito (HWT).

The Big Red’s pin at 149 pounds was the difference in the dual, as RU worked a five-five match split against its opponent to have it come down to the final bout of the night at heavyweight. Despite Esposito’s convincing decision against Brendan Furman, Cornell was able to hand Rutgers its first dual loss this season at the RAC.

“As far as the match goes, obviously it’s a tale of two halves,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “We didn’t get it done down low, we got it done up top. It was a good fight and good dual meet. I just wish we had a little more. I think it’s one we let get away.”

Prior to the match, Rutgers unveiled 2019 NCAA Championship banners for Anthony Ashnault and Nick Suriano, who helped the Scarlet Knights make history last March in Pittsburgh by claiming the program’s first individual national titles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Aguilar started the dual against Dominic LaJoie and conceded the first takedown of the match for an early deficit. Aguilar responded with a quick escape and added a takedown in the final 15 seconds of the period to make it a 3-2 match. Starting bottom in period two, Aguilar worked a reversal and then followed with a series of takedowns for the 11-5 final result.

• In what was on paper the top match of the night, No. 9 Sammy Alvarez (133) faced undefeated and No. 4 Chas Tucker. After a scoreless first, Alvarez collected a quick escape in the first 15 seconds of the second. A tough scramble followed, with both working for position before Tucker landed the takedown at the edge of the circle. Alvarez added another escape in the second, but Tucker’s third-period escape point was the difference in the 3-2 loss, Alvarez’ first against a ranked Intermat opponent this season.

• Rutgers would lose its next five consecutive bouts, with a pin from Cornell’s Hunter Richard in the third period against Gerard Angelo (149) giving the Big Red an important six team points. Back-to-back

• Trailing 18-3, Grello began to grind into the Cornell lead with his 6-3 decision over Milik Dawkins, and Janzer followed by attacking his opponent right away with an early takedown. The redshirt freshman earned four takedowns against Loew en route to a 10-6 decision. Janzer is now 9-0 in dual action this season, which includes three consecutive ranked victories against foes from Cornell, Michigan State and Ohio State.

• Understanding a need for bonus points to close the gap, Pagano drove Jonathon Fagen into the scorer’s table right after the opening whistle for a quick two and collected two backs and a stall point for a quick 5-0 lead after the first period. After continuing to score in the final two periods, Pagano nearly caught Fagen on his back for a potential pin but ran out of time and settled for a 12-0 major.

• Esposito closed out the dual with a 6-3 decision, landing a takedown and several mat returns in the opening period against Furman. Needing points, Esposito continued to attack Furman down the stretch and landed another takedown in the final period to add to his lead and clinch his second consecutive dual victory.
