CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling got its first Big 12 win in a last-minute scheduled dual against Air Force, 27-11.

COVID protocols postponed the Northern Colorado dual UNI that had been set for tonight. Air Force invited the Panthers to the Clune Arena in Colorado Spring after AF also postponed a dual against Utah Valley due to COVID in UV's program. Air Force had been set to compete Saturday.

UNI got bonus points in four matches and won seven of the 10 bouts.

UNI improves to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 duals. Air Force slipped to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Big 12.

Kyle Gollhofer, a redshirt freshman, secured his first career dual win to open the match with a 7-2 decision over Quinn Melofchik at 125 pounds. This was Gollhofer's second time in the dual lineup, having made his debut last week against South Dakota State.

Back-to-back, bonus-point wins at 133 pounds and 141 pounds got the Panthers out to a 13-0 lead.

Kyle Biscoglia, ranked No. 31 by Intermat, notched his 15th career fall, pinning this week's Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, Sidney Flores in 4 minutes, 58 seconds. Biscoglia is now on a four-match win streak, and 10 of his 12 wins have come with bonus points this season.

At 141 pounds, No. 25 Cael secured riding time heading into the third period and continued to rack up the points against Air Force's Garrett Kuchan. Happel won in a 21-9 major decision.

UNI's Colin Realbuto (149 pounds) got his first Big 12 career dual win with a decision over Dylan Martinez. Realbuto secured riding time in the second period but trailed, 4-2, to start the third. An escape, takedown and more than two minutes of riding time gave Realbuto the 6-4 decision.

UNI extended its lead, 16-0 after four matches.

Air Force got its first win of the dual with a 4-1 decision over Kaleb Olejniczak (UNI), who made his debut in the Panther lineup.

No. 20 Austin Yant was the third Panther to earn bonus points, with a 9-0 major decision over Wilton, Iowa, native Trey Brisker. Yant got an escape in the second period and built a lead in the third with nearfall points and riding time for the win.

At 174 pounds, Dajun Johnson fell behind 12-2 in the first period to the 2021 Junior Pan Am gold medalist Sam Wolf of Air Force. Wolf went on to win by tech fall in 5:43, 18-3. This was Johnson's first time in the lineup at 174 pounds. He's jumped in at 184 pounds three times this year.

No. 4 Parker Keckeisen improved to 13-1 with a major decision over the Falcons' Jake Thompson. Keckeisen notched six takedowns against Thompson for the 14-4 major decision at 184 pounds.

UNI's Noah Glaser jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first period of the 197-pound match. He notched six nearfall points against Kayne Hutchison, who closed the gap with a reversal and two nearfall points. Glaser kept the 8-6 lead and added an escape and two more takedowns to win his first career dual, 15-8.

The Falcons took the final match of the night. UNI heavyweight Tyrell Gordon was edged out by undefeated No. 6 Wyatt Hendrickson. Hendrickson had won his previous 11 matches with bonus points. Gordon broke that streak, but lost in a 9-4 decision.

Pair of Cowboys Claim Ranked Wins in Dual Loss to No. 10 Iowa State

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 14, 2022)
– The No. 19 ranked Wyoming Cowboys had their second dual of the season Friday night hosting No. 10 ranked Iowa State inside the Arena-Auditorium. Iowa State took the dual 32-6, but two Cowboys came away with big ranked wins.

At 174 pounds No. 12 Hayden Hastings took the mat against the Cyclones No. 20 ranked Joel Devine. After a scoreless first period Devine chose to start the second period on bottom and that’s where Hastings seized control of the match. Hastings rode out Devine for the entirety of the second period and then began the third period with an escape to go up 2-0. From there Hastings showcased stingy defense on his way to the shutout victory over his top 20 opponent.

The match of the night took place at 197 pounds as No. 3 ranked Stephen Buchanan squared off against ISU’s No. 12 ranked Yonger Bastida. Bastida struck first taking down Buchanan late in the first period to go up 2-0. Bastida would then grow that lead to 4-1 with a minute and a half left in the match. With time running out Buchanan mounted a furious comeback scoring an escape and takedown tying the match at 4-4 and forcing overtime. In the sudden victory period, the two wrestlers traded shot attempts before Buchanan made the decisive move scoring off of a counterattack and handing Bastida just his second loss on the season.

The Cowboys have a quick turnaround now as they host North Dakota State on Sunday inside the UniWyo Sports Complex. That dual is set to being at 1:30 p.m. MT.

Hawkeyes Defeat Northwestern, 33-6

EVANSTON, Illinois --
Top 10 wins from Drake Ayala and Max Murin highlighted the University of Iowa wrestling team’s 33-6 win over No. 23 Northwestern on Friday night at Welsh Ryan Arena.

Ayala topped seventh-ranked Michael DeAugustino, 6-5, at 125 pounds and Max Murin defeated No. 4 Yahya Thomas, 4-3, at 149.

Ayala used a cradle to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 advantage in the second period. He opened the third with an escape to build his lead to 6-3, finished with a 6-5 decision, his second consecutive win over a top 10 opponent.

“We like what we have there,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “The story is going to keep writing itself. He will keep writing his own story.”

Northwestern won decisions at 133 and 141 before Murin got the Hawkeyes rolling at 149. Trailing 3-1 in the third, Murin opened with an escape and closed with a takedown in the final 20 seconds to get the 4-3 win.

“Short time left, nothing to lose, let it fly,” Murin said. “I got in there and got the quick finish. It felt good. He’s a really good opponent but I definitely have to get to my scoring opportunities earlier.”

“Sometimes we let guys win with the first takedown. Sometimes we try to win with the first takedown,” Brands said. “Murin, match was slow. First takedown, the way it was going, could have beat him. He didn’t let it come to that.

“My point is, you can wrestle four, five, six, seven minutes like he wrestled the last 45 seconds. When we have guys that do that our chances go way up. Not to win, but to dominate.”

Murin’s win was the first of seven in a row for Iowa. Kaleb Young used a first-period reversal, third-period takedown and more than two minutes of riding time to win 6-4 at 157.

The Hawkeyes then strung together a variety of bonus points.

Alex Marinelli won by forfeit at 165. Michael Kemerer led 10-0 before securing a first-period fall in two minutes, 36 seconds at 174. Abe Assad ended his 184-pound match early in the second period with a 16-0 technical fall, and Jacob Warner scored nine points in the third period to earn an 11-2 major decision at 197.

Tony Cassioppi scored seven of the final eight points to close the dual with a 7-3 decision at 285. It was his fourth ranked win of the season.

“You let guys squeeze, you’re vulnerable. You squeeze, you’re vulnerable,” Brands said. “That is a long answer to a (question) when you look at it from both sides of the coin for us. They don’t have to be close matches.”
