Sorry, good for the kid BUT, he guided sallies to that Record? your telling me the the other great ball players that were on those teams did do any thing? Very poorly worded.

Hey Coop..of course there were alot of great players on the teams. How many went on to play D1 baseball and how many are playing now....

Zach Lopes is at Delaware. Lamberton is headed to Monmouth and Flowers is going to Tulane from the recentaly graduated class at Sallies. Lopes had a nice year after sitting out a year since he transferred from Coastal Carolina.

Like I said great for him, just didn't like the wording of the article if you want to go back and pull stats from high school career I am pretty sure you will find other great players on those teams, I am sure we will read several articles very similar in the coming years about other players. Rostick, Magee, Veitri and many others, guided that team wasn't a 1 man band. Kid sounds like he learned a lot in college that will help him grow and hopefully get better as a player. Who do i have the pleasure of speaking with?

Lefty, I agree with you on the wording. Andy Jasner misused the word "guided." That term is usually used for coaches. Unfortunately, the Sals impressive regular season record also was followed by post season frustration.

You are correct at pointing out other contributors to the success.

I only got to see Shea a couple of times as a HS player. The kid was a player.
Good to see a DE kid play in a solid summer league.

Monmouth baseball announces class of 2018

Ehehalt welcomes six newcomers

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- The Monmouth University baseball team has announced the commitment of six players to the program for the fall of 2014. Joe Craig (Cherry Hill, N.J.), Aidan Favia (Short Hills, N.J.), Peter Papcun (Brick, N.J.), Matt Littrell (Bayonne, N.J.), Mike Brambilla (Cherry Hill, N.J.), and Justin Trochiano (Morganville, N.J.) will join the MU baseball program next fall.

"Coach Oliveri and Coach Brown did a very nice job putting this group of six together," said Head Coach Dean Ehehalt. "This class really addresses some needs on the field. All of these young men will be great fits as they are high character people and very passionate about baseball. "

Craig, an infielder from Camden Catholic High School, has started at shortstop since his freshman campaign. He was named all-conference first team as a sophomore and junior, along with all-South Jersey accolades and a second team all-state selection as a junior. Last year during his junior season, Craig drove in 25 runs and had an on-base percentage near .600.

Favia is an infielder from Millburn High School, and has been previously named both all-conference and all-county. He helped the Millers to a 23-5 record in 2013, claiming the Super Essex Conference American Division title with a 13-1 mark. In '13, Favia hit .355 with seven doubles, four triples and 12 runs batted in.

Papcun plays both the infield and the outfield for Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J. He was touted as one of the top outfielders in New Jersey by Perfect Game, and was also named to the 17U WWBA All-Tournament Team in Georgia after hitting .400 in the tournament. Papcun helped the Colts to a Shore Conference A-North title in 2013, hitting .310 with 20 runs batted in.

Littrell is a right-handed pitcher at Marist High School, pitching to a 1.80 ERA as a junior en route to being named Second Team All-County. That was preceded by a 9-1 sophomore campaign, including striking out 111 and recording an ERA of just 1.13. He was named to the Perfect Game WWBA 16U All-Tournament Team in 2012, pitching 11 2/3 innings in the tournament and not allowing a run. This past fall, Littrell tossed a no-hitter at the WWBA National Championship Tournament in Jupiter, Fla.

Brambilla is a left-handed pitcher from Cherry Hill East High School, and has been pitching for the varsity squad since his freshman campaign. He was named an Honorable Mention All-American by Perfect Game in 2012 and 2013, and was a member of the All-Tournament team in 2012 for the WWBA 17U squad. In 2013, Brambilla recorded nearly a strikeout per inning, posting a 3.59 ERA and holding opponents to a .220 batting average.

Trochiano plays the infield at Marlboro High School, and has won three varsity letters for the Mustangs. He helped lead Marlboro to the Central Jersey Group 4 State Semifinals as well as the Monmouth County Tournament quarterfinals. Trochiano was named one of the top shortstops in New Jersey by Perfect Game. The infielder also was among team leaders in RBI's with 20 and stolen bases with 15.

The Monmouth baseball team opens the 2014 season on February 14 at The USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon, with MU opposing Michigan State and UMass Lowell.

monmouth baseball picked second in maac preseason poll

Gronsky named Preseason All-MAAC

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ? The Monmouth University baseball team has been picked to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season by the league's 11 head coaches, league officials announced today. The Hawks, who won 30 games last season, will enter their first season in the MAAC with 22 returning letterwinners.

Canisius was picked to defend their title and win the league again in 2014, totaling 117 points. After MU, who received 105 points, was in-state rival Rider, who had 95 points. Siena was picked fourth, trailed by Marist, Fairfield and Manhattan in fifth-seventh. Rounding out the preseason poll were Niagara, Saint Peter's, Iona and Quinnipiac.

The MU infield is led by the Preseason All-MAAC second baseman, Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville Area). The senior hit .302 last year with a team-high 13 doubles, starting 54 games on the right side. He is joined up the middle by classmate Jon Guida (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan), who started 53 games at shortstop a year ago. Danny Avella (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) returns to the middle of the lineup after missing the majority of last season with an injury. In 2012, the power-hitting Avella started every game, slugging a team-best eight home runs and knocking in 45 runs to lead the club. Sophomore Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) is among the young infielders expected to play a role for Monmouth in 2014.

Monmouth returns all three starting outfielders from last season, headed up by left fielder Joe Bamford (Washington, N.J./Northampton CC/Warren Hills Regional), who is coming off of a season in which he hit .307. Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) was in the lineup every day last season, hitting .297 as Monmouth's center field. Craig Sweeney (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) finished second on the squad with 29 runs batted in from his right field spot. Sophomore Dan Shea (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) is also in the mix in the outfield, and saw much of his action in his first season at the DH spot. Behind the plate, Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) is back for his third year as MU's backstop. Perry not only hit .288 as a sophomore, he also threw out 16 runners trying to steal.

Nine pitchers return in 2014 for Coach Ehehalt's squad, highlighted by 2013 Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South). Last season, McGee pitched to a 2.12 ERA, going 8-2 on the year and striking out 69. McGee notched seven complete games, and allowed opponents to hit just .223 against him. Eight pitchers tossed at least thirty innings for the veteran MU pitching staff last year. Frank Trimarco (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) started eight games for MU, going 5-2 with a 3.08 ERA. T.J. Hunt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) was 4-4 in eight starts, while Adam Yunginger (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Anthony Ciavarella (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) each started six games of their own. Junior Jeff Singer (Riverton, N.J./Gloucester C.C./Holy Cross) also figures to be in the fold, transferring in after being named the 2013 National Pitcher of the Year at Gloucester County College. Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) led the team with 23 appearances and Second Team All-NJCBA selection Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) both contributed in the bullpen last season and look to headline a deep group of MU relievers.

Monmouth opens the 2014 season on Friday in Cary, N.C. where the Hawks will oppose Michigan State at the USA Baseball Complex at 12:00 p.m. The opening day doubleheader continues at 3:30 when MU takes on UMass Lowell.

#1 VIRGINIA DEFEATS MONMOUTH BASEBALL, 6-3

Gronsky adds three hits for MU

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? The Monmouth University baseball team fell to top-ranked Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field, 6-3 in the opening game of the weekend series. MU got the tying run to bat in the ninth, but could not find the equalizer. Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) added three hits for MU.

Three Cavaliers had multi-hit days, and Virginia starter Nathan Kirby went six innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits and striking out five. Four UVa relievers combined to go the final three innings. Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) threw four innings, surrendering five runs on six hits, walking four and striking out one. Frank Trimarco (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) threw the final four in relief, giving up just one run on three hits.

Virginia took a first inning lead, when Mike Papi and Branden Cogswell led off the frame with back-to-back singles. A pair of groundouts plated Papi to pit UVa to a 1-0 lead. MU threatened in the third after consecutive singles from Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic), but they were left stranded.

In the fourth, the Cavaliers struck for three after Brandon Downes led things off with a base hit. Following a walk to Joe McCarthy, Nate Irving homered to left with two down to put Virginia up 4-0. MU would answer quickly in the fourth, when Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, Jon Guida (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan) walked and Craig Sweeney (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) loaded the bases when Virginia's third baseman, Kenny Towns couldn't come up with the ball cleanly. Perry followed with a ground ball to short, and a throwing error by Daniel Pinero allowed Gronsky to score. Guida was cut down at the plate on the play, but Monmouth was on the board, trailing 4-1.

The Cavaliers would get that run right back in the bottom of the frame, with Pinero doubling down the left field line and moving over to third on a wild pitch. Papi's single to center brought home Pinero, but McGee was able to stifle the Cavaliers the rest of the inning, stranding two and keeping the score at 5-1.

UVa tacked on a run in the fifth, with Howard starting the at-bat with a base hit. An Irving sacrifice moved Howard over to second and he came around to score on Pinero's knock to right center.

In the ninth, Dan Shea (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) was hit by a pitch leading off, and moved to second before Sweeney's single moved him to third. Perry came through with an RBI single to make it a 6-2 game, and both Sweeney and Perry moved up a bag after a wild pitch. On the next pitch, freshman Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) drove in his first career run with a single through the left side. MU brought the tying run to the plate in Joe Bamford (Washington, N.J./Northampton C.C./Warren Hills Regional), but the senior hit into a double play to end the game, with UVa winning, 6-3.

The teams return to action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. with a doubleheader at Davenport Field, with one schedule as a makeup game after Friday's postponement.

MONMOUTH BASEBALL DROPS A PAIR TO #1 VIRGINIA

Two three-hit games for Wilgus

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? The Monmouth baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to UVa on Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field, losing 5-3 in Game One and 6-2 in a weather-shortened Game Two that only saw the completion of five and a half innings. Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) had three hits in both games, going six-for-eight on the day.

Jon Guida (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan) had three hits from his #2 spot in the order in the first game, and Wilgus continued his strong start to 2014. T.J. Hunt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) took the loss in Game One, allowing four earned on six hits through five. Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) provided three innings of scoreless relief. Josh Sborz allowed two runs on six hits through five to get the win for the Cavaliers. Jeff Singer (Riverton, N.J./Gloucester C.C./Holy Cross) took the loss in the final game of the series. Brandon Waddell got the win in Game Two for UVa, pitching all six innings that were played and surrendering just one earned run on five hits.

The games were moved up an hour after Friday's game was postponed, turning Sunday into a doubleheader. MU struck quickly in Game One, scratching across a first inning run on Virginia starter Josh Sborz. Wilgus and Guida both singled, and Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) moved them over with a sacrifice bunt ahead of Dan Shea's RBI groundout.

Mike Papi walked to lead off the third against Hunt, and Branden Cogswell knocked a single to right. Derek Fisher got the Cavaliers on the board with a run-scoring double, and Brandon Downes put Virginia in front with an RBI single. Joe McCarthy's sacrifice fly capped off a three run third for the home team. The Blue and White wasted no time in responding, plating a run in the next at-bat. Gronsky was hit by a pitch to get things started, and Shea singled to center to put two on with nobody out. Craig Sweeney's (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) opposite field single loaded the bases, and everyone would move up a base on a wild pitch, scoring Gronsky and cutting the Virginia lead to 3-2.

Virginia manufactured a fourth inning run, with Daniel Pinero singling, stealing second and scoring on Papi's 3-2 single to right. In the top of the seventh, Monmouth got within a run again, with the rally sparked by a Connor White (Wall, N.J./Wall) leadoff bunt single. Wilgus continued his big day with a single, and Guida picked up a hit of his own to fill the bags for Gronsky to bring in another run with a sacrifice fly. Pinero added a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the Cavaliers and that score would hold, with UVa winning the first game of the day by a 5-3 count.

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage with a pair of runs in the first and second against Singer. A walk and a hit by pitch set up Downes to rope a two-run double into left, making it 2-0 Virginia. Pinero doubled in a second inning tally and Fisher brought home the fourth run with a fielder's choice. Monmouth would quickly slice that lead in half, when Joe Bamford (Washington, N.J./Northampton C.C./Warren Hills Regional) singled back through the middle leading off. Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholc) followed with a base hit, and two batters later, Wilgus stayed hot with a two-RBI double.

McCarthy would pad the Virginia lead in the fifth with a two-run double, and the Cavaliers retired the Hawks in the sixth before the weather came and wiped out the remainder of the game, which was called after 5 ½ innings.

MU returns to action Friday at 10:30 a.m. for a meeting with Towson in Annapolis, Md. at The U.S. Naval Academy.

Hawks tie game in ninth before falling

ANNAPOLIS, Md. ? Monmouth University's baseball team came back to tie the game three times, but Robert Currie's walk-off double won the contest for Navy on Saturday afternoon, 4-3 at Max Bishop Stadium. Monmouth falls to 1-7 on the year, while Navy improves to 5-6.

Monmouth battled back in the ninth to tie the game, getting an RBI groundout from Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) after Danny Avella (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and Craig Sweeney (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) started the inning with singles. Navy won it in the bottom of the frame on Currie's walk-off ground-rule double after Leland Saile and Drew Hayes notched back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt moved them over.

MU starter T.J. Hunt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) went 5.2 innings, surrendering three runs on eight hits and striking out four. Frank Trimarco (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) tossed 2.2 in relief, allowing a run on four hits. Navy starter Stephen Moore threw eight innings, giving up two runs, one earned on four hits and striking out ten. Currie and Hayes both had three-hit days for the Midshipmen.

Navy manufactured a run in the bottom of the first, as Currie singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He came home on Kash Manzelli's single to left, giving the home team an early 1-0 lead. Monmouth answered in the third, when Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) led off with a fly ball to center that was misplayed by Currie, allowing Alessandrine to end up on third on the three base error. Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) grounded out to first, plating Alessandrine and tying the game at one.

Brandon Beans started the home fourth with a ground-rule double, and two batters later came home on a base hit by Saile. Navy got it right back in the bottom of the frame, stringing together a run after Travis Blue's leadoff single. Blue moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and on to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Connor Deneen's double to center, giving Navy a 3-2 lead after six before the Mids won it in the bottom of the ninth.

mu baseball uses two big innings to beat penn, 7-5

Hawks score four in fifth, three in eighth

ANNAPOLIS, Md. ? The Monmouth University baseball team took advantage of two big innings to defeat the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday at Max Bishop Stadium, 7-5. Freshman Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) drove in three runs, and six Hawks had hits to improve the Hawks to 2-7 on the year. The Quakers fall to 0-6.

MU got contributions from six players offensively, and Chris McKenna (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) won his first game of the year after going five innings and allowing a run on four hits. Anthony Ciavarella (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) worked a scoreless sixth inning. Dan Gautieri went 6.1 innings for Penn, striking out nine but giving up four runs on six hits and three walks. McKenna then settled in and retired twelve of the next fourteen to face him, including a 1-2-3 fifth inning. The score remained 1-0 Penn until the fifth, when Monmouth's bats got hot. Jacobson doubled down the left field line in front of Joe Bamford (Washington, N.J./Northampton C.C./Warren Hills Regional) beating out an infield single. Connor White (Wall, N.J./Wall) drew a walk to fill the bases, and Alessandrine tied the game with a base hit to right. Two batters later, Lamberton delivered the big blow. The freshman put an opposite-field double into the gap in left-center, clearing the bases and giving the Blue and White a 4-1 lead.

monmouth baseball drops 1-0 decision to george washington

McKenna allows just one run in 7.1 innings

ARLINGTON, Va.- Chris McKenna (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) was strong on the mound again for MU, allowing just a run on three hits through 7.1 innings, but MU fell short on Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park in a 1-0 loss to George Washington. MU falls to 3-9 on the season, while GW improves to 6-10.

McKenna allowed only one hit through the first seven innings, a slow roller in the second from Cody Bryant that Bryant narrowly beat out. He retired Bryant on a double play on the next pitch after snagging the comebacker behind his back to start the 1-6-3 turn. The junior right hander faced the minimum through the first seven innings, and went 1-2-3 in six of them. GW starter Bobby LeWarne threw a complete game shutout, surrendering only one hit on the day, walking nobody and striking out seven. Frank Trimarco (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) got two outs in succession in the eighth in relief of McKenna.

MU got a leadoff single from Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) in the sixth and moved him to second on Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South)'s sac bunt, but were unable to bring the freshman around.

In the eighth, Owen Beightol led off with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt from Bryant moved Beightol to third, and Bobby Campbell followed with an RBI single through the drawn-in MU infield to give George Washington the only run they would need.
