Delaware Athletes Playing In Colleges

Women's Basketball Downs Colgate, 61-54, On The Road

Throughout the entire second half Loyola University Maryland women's basketball refused to relinquish its lead defeating Colgate University, 61-54, from Cotterell Court Saturday afternoon.

Nai Brown scored a game-high 23 points, while sophomore Tiffany Padgett recorded her second-career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Lisa Mirarchi added 10 points, leading the team with five assists.

For the second game in a row, Loyola led at the break after shooting 40-percent or better for the majority of the half. The Greyhounds kept the Raiders scoreless for more than seven minutes, taking advantage of the time and scoring 11-unanswered points, 23-17. Brown and Padgett attributed for all 11 points during that time, six and five, respectively.

To round out the first 20 minutes, Colgate and Loyola traded three's and a field goal to maintain the Greyhounds' six-point first half lead.

Padgett led all scorers in the first half, recording nine points and six rebounds in only 15 minutes of action. Brown followed with eight points and a team-high two steals.

Coming back from the break, Padgett continued her offensive momentum, scoring the first Loyola point of the second half.

It took the Greyhounds four minutes to respond with Padgett's jumper, but when they did the green and grey found themselves on an 11-2 run and holding Colgate scoreless for nearly five minutes.

Colgate's Mariah Jones halted the run with a three-point field goal, but the play did not stop the Greyhounds. Senior Nicole Krusen responded with her own three from the top of the key, 43-32, taking the largest lead of the contest for Loyola.

The Raiders pulled within single digits after a pair of free throws and paint points, but once again Loyola continued to fight back responding with combined points from Padgett and Mirarchi, 47-46.

In the final two and a half minutes, Colgate got within five points on two separate occasions, but Loyola shot 100-percent from inside the arc for the remainder of the game and pulled out the seven-point margin of victory over the Raiders.

Loyola forced a game-high 14 turnovers, helping the team to 15 points off the Raiders' misfortunes. Comparatively, Colgate only scored nine points off turnovers.

The Greyhounds outrebounded Colgate, 40-34, grabbing nearly 30 defensive boards in 40 minutes. Sophomore Brittany Butler grabbed a career-high five rebounds, four alone in the first half.

Loyola closes out the first half of Patriot League play on Wednesday hosting College of the Holy Cross at 7 p.m.

Dara Taylor posted her second career double-double and Maggie Lucas scores 25 points

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; January 26, 2014 ? Senior guard Dara Taylor (Wilmington, Del.) posted her second career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists to lead the #13/13 Penn State Lady Lions (15-4, 6-1 Big Ten) to a runaway 30-point win over Minnesota (13-8, 2-5), 83-53. Penn State has not allowed an opponent to score more than 55 points in its last four games, marking the first time that has occurred in Big Ten play for the Lions since 1999-00 (Indiana, 74-36; Northwestern, 66-34; Minnesota, 99-43; Ohio State,56-50).

Taylor turned in one of her best all-around performances of her collegiate career, notching her second double-double. She orchestrated the high-powered attack by scoring 15 points and dishing out a Penn State career-high 10 assists whileonly committing one turnover. The senior also impacted the game defensively as she swiped a team-high four steals. Taylor's first collegiate double-double was at Maryland against the Virginia on Jan. 11, 2010. The point-assist double-double is the first for a Lady Lion player since Alex Bentley had 15points and 15 assists against North Carolina on Nov. 30, 2011

Fellow senior Maggie Lucas (Narberth, Pa.) added a game-high 25 points on her mini-bobblehead giveaway day. Lucas got off to a great start, scoring 15 of her 25 points in the first half. The seniorshot 7-of-15 from the field, 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the free throw line in 32 minutes of action. To complete her performance, Lucasadded three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Ariel Edwards (Elmont, N.Y.) also reached double figures on the afternoon as the senior poured in 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting and chipped in five rebounds and two assists. Freshman forward Alex Harris (Lorain, Ohio) showed some pop off of the bench with five points and five rebounds, while fellow rookies Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) and Jenny DeGraaf (Springboro, Ohio) added four points each.

The Lady Lions' defensive unit was also a major factor in the outcome. Through 35 minutes of play, Penn State allowed only three Golden Gophers to make a mark in the scoring column. A total of five Minnesota players ended up scoring in the contest, with three Gophers combining for 49 of the 53 points. Penn State also won the turnover battle with eight turnovers compared to Minnesota's 21.

The Lady Lions couldn't have asked for a much better start on Sunday afternoon, as Penn State jumped out to a 13-4 lead in just over four minutes of play. Talia East (Philadelphia, Pa.) opened up the game's scoring with a layup and then Taylor and Lucas took over the next few minutes, combining to score 11 points. Taylor hit a jumper, a layup and two free throws, while Lucas connected on two shots from the charity stripe and a trey.

Over the next three and a half minutes of action the two sides traded buckets, with each team scoring eight points to move the score to 21-12 with 12:14 left in the first half. Penn State did all of its offensive damage from outside thepaint during the stretch, as Edwards and Lucas both hit shots from beyond the arc and then Lucas added a midrange jumper.

Leading by nine, Edwards knocked down a jumper to give Penn State its first double-digit lead of the afternoon at 23-12. The Lady Lions went on to methodically increase its lead to 22 points, outscoring the Gophers, 21-10, for the rest of the first frame to take a commanding 44-22 lead into the break. It was a complete team effort in the run to close the opening 20 minutes, with six different players combining to score the 21 points.

Penn State opened the second stanza by scoring 13 of the first 21 points to grab its largest lead of the game at 57-30 at the 14:57 mark. Lucas once again led the way in the spurt scoring seven points off a three, a jumper and two free throws. Whitted, Tori Waldner (Milton, Ga.) and East each added two points during the stretch.

Minnesota answered with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes of play to cut the deficit down to 17 at 59-42 but was unable to draw any closer the rest of the way, as the Lady Lions outscored the Golden Gophers 24-11 down the stretch to win their fourth game in a row and stay atop the Big Ten standings with an 83-53 victory.

Wildcats Down Griffins Despite

Third Trevisan Double-Double

New Castle, Del. - (1/28/2014) ? Despite a third straight double-double from graduate guard Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.), Chestnut Hill College trailed Wilmington University in tonight's 56-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) final. The Griffins led briefly off the opening tip, but a nine-point halftime lead, 29-20, and a few too many turnovers allowed the Wildcats to capture the season sweep.

Chestnut Hill College (6-12, 4-7) recorded the contest's first two baskets, 4-0 at 17:55, but tightly trailed Wilmington University (8-13, 4-8) before allowing the home team to separate for a 29-20 halftime advantage. Trevisan recorded eight points and nine rebounds of his 18-point, 13-rebound double-double in the first half, but junior guard Valentino Thompson (Tinton Falls, N.J.) capped the Wildcats 13-4 closing run with six points in the final 2:24, 29-20. The nine-point edge was enough to keep the Griffins at bay until Trevisan and freshman forward Carson Murphy (Mohawk, N.Y.) led a late Griffin push that cut the deficit to two points, 51-49, with 2:21 remaining. Unfortunately, the Griffins lost ground with a couple turnovers leaving Trevisan's jumper at 0:12 as their only points in the final two minutes, 56-51.

Valentino led all participants with 20 points while also recording four rebounds, four assists, and four steals in the Wildcat win. His backcourt partner, senior guard Herbert Dennis (Ridgley, Md.) helped with ten points, four rebounds, one assist, and two steals, while sophomore forward Ta'Vaune Griffin (Chester, Pa.) captained a strong interior defense with eight points, ten rebounds, four blocks, and two steals.

Trevisan went for 18 points and 13 rebounds in his third straight double-double performance while also headlining the Griffins defensive effort with a block and three steals. The Griffins 33 remaining points were split among eight other scorers with eight points from sophomore guard Dexter Harris (Swedesboro, N.J.) leading the group. Junior guard Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa.) provided four points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the loss.

The men's basketball team returns home to host Dominican College in a 3:00 p.m. CACC contest on Saturday, February 1.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) ? The UCF women's basketball team pushed and prodded against Louisville. The Knights swished 3-pointers, picked up and-1s, fought for rebounds ? in short, did everything they could to bump off the nation's fourth-ranked team.

But Louisville (23-1, 11-0) remained poised enough for a 74-59 win over the Knights (9-13, 2-9) on Tuesday night at CFE Arena.

The Knights' Achilles' heel proved to be their season-high 25 turnovers, which the Cardinals converted 23 points off of.

UCF senior Sara Djassi led her team with 12 points and was joined in double figures by freshman Zykira Lewis (10). Guard Andrea Hines and forwards Stephanie Taylor and Brittni Montgomery all chipped in 9 points apiece, and Montgomery nearly tallied a double-double with a team-high 9 rebounds.

UCF got everyone on the court involved in distributing the ball with seven assists on the team's first seven field goals. The Knights were able to cut the lead to six on several occasions, including Erika Jones' layup with less than 7 minutes to play, 29-23.

The Cardinals responded with five unanswered points to push their lead back out to double digits. It appeared the Knights might be able to keep the deficit under 10 at halftime after Lewis found Taylor for a layup with 46 seconds to go, but Emmonnie Henderson sank a jumper for a 44-33 advantage.

The Knights made good on the opening possession of the second half by working the ball inside to Montgomery for a layup. From there, Louisville rolled on a 12-2 run for a commanding lead that eventually extended to 20 before UCF began its spirited comeback.

The whistle blew in UCF's favor time and again, allowing the Knights to capitalize from their opportunities at the free throw line, where they converted 10-of-11 over a five-minute span.

When Hines swished a 3-pointer from the left wing, she inched the deficit back to 10, 63-53, which 5:36 left to play.

Louisville's Sara Hammond swished a timely 3-pointer on the Cardinals' next possession that dashed the Knights' momentum, and the Cardinals were able to hang on for the win.

UCF travels the short trip on I4 to Joi Williams' alma mater and in-state rival USF on Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.

Men's Basketball Snaps American's Winning Streak With 62-58 Win[/B]

[/B]

BALTIMORE ? Tyler Hubbard scored a career-high 20 points, and Loyola University Maryland made 8-of-10 free throws in the game's final minute to secure a 62-57 Patriot League victory over American University on Wednesday night in Reitz Arena.

American (14-8 overall, 10-1 Patriot League), which was receiving a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, had not lost a conference game this season and was winner of 11-straight games.

The Greyhounds (10-12, 5-6) were playing without their top scorer in the game. Senior guard Dylon Cormier (21.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals per game) was leading the Patriot League in scoring before suffering a hand injury on Saturday in a game against the U.S. Military Academy that necessitated surgery today.

Hubbard's 20 points came as he was 6-of-7 from 3-point range, and he hit two free throws with 25 seconds left when the Eagles had pulled within a pair.

Franz Rassman made all seven of his free throws and scored 11 points, and Jordan Latham added 10 points as Loyola shot 48.7 percent from the field, 7-of-10 from 3-point range.

The Greyhounds led by five on four occasions in the first half, and while American never took the lead, they kept the game within two possessions for the first 17-plus minutes.

A Marko Vasic three, however, with 2:07 left before the break gave American its first lead of the game, 25-24.

Hubbard responded in kind, hitting his third of the first half from behind the arc, and Loyola took a 27-25 lead into the locker room.

American came out firing in the second half, scoring the frame's first 10 points, two on Jesse Reed threes. The second by Reed pushed American ahead by eight, 35-27, with 16:52 to play.

Loyola had a turnover and missed shot on its next two possessions, but it also held American scoreless after Reed's three. Jarred Jones had a steal in the paint for the Greyhounds that led to R.J. Williams finding Hubbard for another three that cut the deficit to five.

Tony Wroblicky got the Eagles' advantage back to seven with a basket, but a jumper and dunk by Latham put Loyola within three, 37-34, with 13:09 to play. Another Wroblicky layup at 12:40 made it a two-possession game, but Hubbard answered with another three at 12:22, and the Greyhounds were within two, 39-37.

Two Latham free throws at 11:21 tied the score before a transition three by Hubbard ignited the crowd and put Loyola in front, 42-39, with 10:50 left in regulation.

American would go bavk up twice, but after the second time, two Rassman free throws with 5:36 to paly tied the score.

Eric Laster then had a steal on the defense end for Loyola, and Williams found him on the top right of the perimeter for a three at 4:37 that put Loyola in front, 49-46. Darius Gardner, however, came around a screen for American and made a three of his own, tying the game for the eighth time.

On the ensuing possession, Latham dumped a passinto Rassman underneath the basket, and Rassman made an up-and-under move to give Loyola a 51-49 lead.

Loyola forced a turnover on the defensive end, and Williams made 1-of-2 at the line to put the Greyhounds up three.

A missed three by Vasic resulted in Loyola drawing a foul on the rebound, and after the Greyhounds had a shot-clock violation, Williams stripped Gardner of his dribble, and the junior guard raced to the basket for a layup that made it a 54-49 Loyola lead with 1:24 left.

From that point, American drew within two twice, but Loyola hit eight of its final 10 free throws to seal the win, including two by Denzel Brito with five seconds left.

Brito and Williams each had four assists, and Williams grabbed four rebounds. Jones recorded four of Loyola's 11 steals, and Williams had three.

Gardner led American with 19 points, making 7-of-8 shots and 5-of-5 from 3-point range. Reed added 16, and Wroblicky had 11.

The Greyhounds play their next two games on the road, starting with a Saturday, February 8, game at Lehigh University at 1 o'clock.

Widener scored eight straight points over four minutes for a 54-47 lead with 2:30 left, thanks to four points from senior Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA/Penncrest)[/B].

After Alfonzo Hawkins' two free throws with 2:13 remaining and his layup with 1:26 left, the Mustangs closed to 54-51. Junior Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)[/B] hit one free throw for a 55-51 margin with 51 seconds to play before Hawkins committed a crucial turnover.

Sophomore Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA/California-PA)[/B] hit once from the line with 32 seconds left and Lawson followed suit with 13 seconds remaining for the final.

Lawson was too much in the paint, besting his previous high of 21 rebounds set February 6, 2013 at Elizabethtown to notch his 12th double-double of the season. He entered the contest eighth in the country in rebounds and 14th in double-doubles.

Fields scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting with four 3-pointers and Byrd added 14 for the Pride (10-10, 4-9 CC), who shot 41 percent (18-of-44) from the field.

Hawkins scored 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and Justin Kuntz netted 13 points for Stevenson (13-7, 8-5), which shot only 27 percent (7-of-26) from the field in the second half and 40 percent (19-of-47) overall.

Widener Women's Basketball Rebounds Its Way Past Stevenson, 68-63

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

No. 10/9 Lady Lions Upset by Iowa, 73-70

Talia East scored a career-high 14 points and posts fourth double-double with 12 rebounds

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; February 6, 2014 ? The #10/9 Penn State Lady Lions (17-5, 8-2 Big Ten) dropped a 73-70 thriller to Iowa (18-6, 6-4) in the Bryce Jordan Center on Thursday night. The Lady Lions ran into a hot-shooting Hawkeye team, led by Ally Disterhoff, who turned in a career night with 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field. The loss snaps Penn State's six-game winning streak.

The Lady Lions had four players reach double figures on the evening. Senior guard Maggie Lucas (Narberth, Pa.) led the team in scoring with 21 points on seven makes from the field, including twofrom distance and five from the charity stripe. With her performance, Lucasmoved into eighth place on the Big Ten's career scoring chart, passing Minnesota's Lindsay Whalen (2,285; 2001-04). Lucas also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals while playing the full 40 minutes.

Penn State's senior center Talia East (Philadelphia, Pa.) turned in one of her best performances in her Lady Lioncareer, as she scored a career-best 14 points and matched her season-best performance on the glass with 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and second in her last three games.

The two other Lady Lions to eclipse the double digit mark were senior guard/forward Ariel Edwards (Elmont, N.Y.) and senior guard Dara Taylor (Wilmington, Del.). Edwards recorded 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal, while Taylor added 10 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists on the evening.

Through the first eight minutes of action the Lady Lions and Hawkeyes battled to a 14-14 standstill. All five Penn State starters found their way into the scoring column with Edwards leading the way with six early points. The Blue and White then went on a mini-run over the next two and a half minutes, outscoring the visitors 9-4 to take a five point lead at 23-18. The spurt was powered by Lucas, who scored seven of the points in a multitude of ways. The senior first converted two free throw attempts then knocked down a jumper before connecting from beyond the arc. East added a layup during the stretch.

Iowa's Theairra Taylor abruptly ended the run with a layup and subsequently sparked an 8-0 run for the Hawkeyes to put the visitors back on top by a score of 26-23 with 8:20 remaining in the first frame. The two sides played an even next eight minutes of action with each side scoring 14 points to give Iowa a 40-37 lead with just under 10 seconds left. East was the catalyst offensively, leading the Lady Lions with six points in that stretch.

Trailing by three, the Lady Lions inbounded the ball under their own basket with just under eight seconds left and found Lucas, who canned a trey from the left side of the arc just before the halftime buzzer to knot the game up at 40-40 heading into the break.

The Hawkeyes opened the final 20 minutes of action playing inspired basketball, as the visitors outscored the Lady Lions 12-4 over the opening three and a half minutes open up an eight point lead at 52-44.

Over the next five minutes Penn State methodically chipped away at Iowa's lead and managed to even the score at 56-56, scoring 12 of the game's next 16 points. Penn State shared the scoring wealth during the stretch with East scoring four points and Lucas, Taylor, Edwards and Kaliyah Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) each adding two points apiece.

Iowa answered by scoring the next five points to go up 61-56 with just under 10 minutes left in the game but Penn State quickly responded by ripping off a 12-2 run to take five point advantage at 68-63, matching its largest lead of theevening with 4:26 showing on the scoreboard. Edwards started the spurt with a finish at the rim and freshman guard/forward Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) capped the stretch with a jumper just inside the arc to bring the Penn State faithful to its feet.

However, the Lady Lion momentum would be short-lived as the Hawkeyes rattled off thenext six points in just over two minutes of game action to retake the lead at 69-68 with just 1:59 left on the clock.

Edwards answered by knocking down a jumper on the next possession to grab the lead back at 70-69, but it was not to be for the Lady Lions. Iowa's Bethany Doolittle converted a jumper to put the visitors up by one point with 1:12 left in the game and after an empty Penn State possession, Disterhoff drew a whistle in the waning seconds of the shot clock and knocked down two free throws to give the Hawkeyes a three-point cushion at 73-70 with 8.2 seconds remaining.

Iowa then astutely fouled Taylor with just under two seconds to go and Taylor was unable to hit the front end of the one-and-one, which sealed the Hawkeye victory.

GAME NOTES: Maggie Lucas moved into the eighth place spot on the Big Ten's all-time scoring list with 2,299 points, passing Minnesota's Lindsay Whalen (2,285; 2001-04) … Talia East set a career high with 14 points, surpassing her previous record of 13 points vs. Indiana (1/22/14) ... UCF WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CAN'T SLOW BULLS' RUN

Two Knights net career highs in 89-54 loss

TAMPA, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) ? A pair of career-high performances from two starters was not enough to propel the UCF women's basketball team over USF in Saturday afternoon's matchup. The Knights (9-14, 2-10) dropped an 89-54 decision to the rival Bulls (13-10, 8-4) in their first matchup at the Sun Dome in 14 years.

UCF junior guard Andrea Hines tallied 19 points thanks to a near automatic 11-of-13 performance from the free throw line to lead the Knights in scoring for the first time this season. Freshman Zykira Lewis added 17 points for her 14th game of double figures this year.

Erika Jones grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to catapult herself among the program's top-three career leaders (825).

A 16-2 run allowed USF to take an 18-6 edge before Stephanie Taylor snapped the Bulls' hold by drawing a foul that put UCF in the bonus with 8:36 to play in the first. She made the first of two, and Brittni Montgomery chipped in a putback, 18-9.

But USF continued to fluster the Knights by continuously grabbing offensive rebounds for an extra 12 second-chance points. They also made the most of opportunities presented from UCF's turnovers, converting 17 points. By halftime, the Bulls had extended their lead to 46-17.

Although the second-half played out much closer, 43-37 in the Bulls' favor, UCF could not make enough of a push for the lead. USF's Jayla King swished a 3-pointer with 24 seconds on the clock to cap the score at 89 ? the most points UCF has allowed an opponent to score this season.

Griffins Resilient In Last-Second Loss to Rams

Philadelphia, Pa. - (2/11/2014) ? After trailing Philadelphia University by as many as 20 points, 45-25, in the opening half of tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, Chestnut Hill College brought the Sorgenti Arena faithful to their feet with a thundering comeback that left them down one point, 77-76, with 0:21 seconds on the clock. A missed Ram free throw left the door open and a third chance basket from junior center Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, Pa.) put the Griffins in the lead, 78-77, but the remaining four seconds (0:04) would be just enough for the Rams to locate sophomore forward Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa.) for the game-winning jumper, 79-78.

Philadelphia University (19-5, 13-2) could not miss off the opening tip, shooting 65.5% (19-of-29) in the opening half to secure a 47-34 halftime advantage. It was Johnson and senior guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa.) who carried the Rams hot hand, combining for 27 points on a combined 10-of-14 (.714) shooting effort that included a 7-of-10 (.700) clip from three-point range. The result was a 20-point Ram advantage, 45-25, with 3:52 remaining in the frame. The always aggressive Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, Pa.) helped Chestnut Hill College (7-15, 5-10) narrow the gap before halftime, as the senior guard got Radtke involved and scored four points of his own to leave the halftime spread at 13 points, 47-34.

The Rams shooting charm seemed to disappear at the start of the second half as junior guard Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa.) directed the Griffins back with all 14 of his points coming in the closing period. He hit a three point basket at 7:18 to reduce the Ram advantage to three points, 63-60, and less than a minute later (6:30) it was freshman guard Billy Cassidy (Primos, Pa.) who tied the contest at 63-63 with another three-point bucket. The Rams managed to briefly regain a four point lead, 75-71 (1:53), before a put-back from freshman forward Carson Murphy (Mohawk, N.Y.) cut the gap back to one point, 77-76, with 21 ticks remaining (0:21). A missed one-and-one opportunity gave the Griffins a chance at the win and on the ensuing possession a Walck drive fell short, as did the initial follow, before Radtke nailed the baseline jumper to grab the lead, 78-77, and ignite the Sorgenti crowd. Unfortunately, the basket left four seconds on the game clock (0:04), enough for the Rams to locate Johnson for the game winner, 79-78.

-MORE-

Schlitzer's 23 points led four Rams in double figures. He also recorded five rebounds, six assists, and a block. Johnson finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal while senior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem, Pa.) and sophomore forward T.J. Huggins (Alexandria, Va.) totaled 11 and ten points, respectively.

Walck and Radtke each totaled 14 points, leading four Griffins in double figures. Walck added seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals to his scoring production, while Radtke additionally recorded four rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal. Bogans finished with 11 points and graduate guard Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) offered ten.
