Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Chosen to End Fourth in the CACC South Division

A season of high expectations for Goldey-Beacom’s volleyball team sees it picked to end fourth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division based on a vote by the league’s coaches.

One of the go-to players this season is junior libero/defensive specialist Makinsie Balderson (Fairfax, VA), who has been a vital player in many ways over her first two seasons. Last season, she was sixth in the country with 60 aces, 10th with 0.54 aces per set, 24th in the league with 281 digs and 31st with 62 assists. Balderson enters the season tied for eighth in school history with 103 aces.

She closed last season 17th in the CACC with 4.33 assists per set, 19th with 342 assists and 21st with 0.34 aces per set. Florence begins this year third in school history with 1,907 assists and just outside the top 10 with 100 aces.

A welcome addition back to the lineup is sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ), who missed all of last season due to injury. The 2016 CACC Rookie of the Year is as important to the lineup as anyone, finishing that year 53rd in the country with 3.72 kills per set, 66th with 4.17 points per set and eighth in the league with 331 kills.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Rolls Past Saint Thomas Aquinas, 4-0, in its Season Opener

Goldey-Beacom scored three times in the second half to put away things and cruised on opening day to a 4-0 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

In a first half in which both teams attempted six shots, it was the Lightning who cracked the scoreboard. Melayna Immediato (Hockessin, DE/Delaware Military Academy), playing her first collegiate game, lofted a ball for junior Jenna Fannon (Newark, DE) and the latter tapped it home in the 36th minute.

Immediato then found the goal column in the 59th minute for a 2-0 contest. She took the ball 30 yards from goal and fired a shot over the outstretched arms of Courtney Dumain and under the crossbar for her first goal.

Senior Sophie Woods (Manchester, England) made it 3-0 in the 76th minute, taking a pass from sophomore Emily Woolvin (Brierley Hill, England) and putting home a 20-yard shot for her seventh career goal. The Lightning (1-0) only had to wait another 50 seconds for their last goal as sophomore Ali Henriquez (Hoboken, NJ) netted her second career marker off Immediato’s pass.

Immediato’s four-point game helped the Lightning gain an 8-4 shots edge in the second half and 14-10 overall. Senior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) overcame the Spartans (0-1) getting 11 corner kicks by recording two saves over 86 minutes.

It was Goldey-Beacom’s third straight opening-day win and first overall victory against Saint Thomas Aquinas in three meetings.

Goldey-Beacom continues its season-opening four-game homestand Saturday against Daemen, starting at 1:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom’s Men’s Soccer Falls, 2-0, to the District of Columbia in the Season Opener

A matchup of two teams who both went to the NCAA Tournament last year did not go Goldey-Beacom’s way as it was handed a 2-0 loss by the District of Columbia in Millersville, PA.

An expected battled turned out to be just that and it was the Firebirds who scored first in the 28th minute. Kelvin Herrera got a pass from Ryan Dagley and put a 25-yard shot into the back of the next.

UDC got an insurance marker in the 77th minute when Gabriel Torres converted a penalty kick for the final.

Senior Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa), a two-time reigning first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pick as well as a CoSIDA third team Academic All-America pick last year, made six saves for the Lightning (0-1). GBC also had five different players attempt a shot.

Torres took eight shots and Joao Brusamolin came up with two saves for UDC (1-0).

Goldey-Beacom, which last season won its second CACC title, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in its initial appearance. UDC was eliminated in the first round.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is back at Millersville University to play the host in a match scheduled for 7:00 pm.

But the Lightning finally broke through in the 35th minute. Senior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) sent a corner kick in the box that ensued in a scramble. Junior Samantha Carey (Marilla, NY) won it and got the ball to Immediato, who buried it to break the ice.

It already is the third goal of the season for the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player and Rookie of the Week.

The Lightning’s defense again exceled in the second half, withstanding the oppressive heat. Senior goalkeeper Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) only was called upon to make just one save in that span for GBC.

Goldey-Beacom then was the recipient of a free kick in the 69th minute just outside the 18-yard box. Greenwood was chosen to do the honor and beat the wall just inside the right post for her first goal of the season and third career.

Greenwood and Immediato had two shots apiece with Lopez making two saves for the Lightning, who are 3-0 for just the second time in school history (2016).

Jules Sicker attempted two shots and Megan Young made four saves for the Warriors (1-1-1).

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday for its CACC opener against Felician as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The women’s game starts at 1:00 pm and the men go at 3:30 pm.

Goldey-Beacom’s Catarina Zheng and Maria Bruno Gain CACC Weekly Honors.

Goldey-Beacom sophomore Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) has repeated as the league’s Rookie of the Week.

Zheng had an impeccable week at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional that was highlighted by her doubles play with sophomore Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands). One year after the duo made the regional semifinals, they advanced to the final before a tough loss in a match tiebreak to Barbara Quagliardi and Diana Baumgartnere from New York Tech.

Zheng and Post have 21 career doubles wins, just three off the school’s top 10 list.

Zheng also played in the singles draw, getting a 6-1, 6-4 win over Bruno in the second round before falling to Quagliardi in the third round.

Bruno only played in singles, making it through two rubbers in the qualifier round before upending Camila Humala from Le Moyne in the first round.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Rallies for 3-3 Tie vs. Jefferson

A rematch of last season’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference final was a thriller as Goldey-Beacom scored three second-half goals to rally for a 3-3 tie against Jefferson at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The encounter was the first meeting between the schools since Goldey-Beacom notched a 2-1 overtime victory over Jefferson to clinch the school’s second CACC crown and first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Rams looked like they would gain a matter of revenge as they opened a 3-0 halftime lead, during a period in which they posted an 8-2 shots edge. Jason Rocha scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year on a 15-yard shot in the 21st minute, Andrew Sauers netted his first in the 25th minute on a header and Myles-Jordan Senior-Campbell got his first on a tap-in during the 37th minute.

Rocha, Hunter Dyson and Charlie Livesey had the assists.

Goldey-Beacom looked to rally, just like it did September 8 against Felician as it entered the 80th minute down a goal before scoring the next three for a 4-2 triumph. Sophomore Joe Scarpinato (Middletown, DE) got the ball rolling in the 64th minute with his second goal of the year, putting one inside the left post following a pass from junior Jamie McAvoy (Ayr, Scotland).

Freshman Josh Moody (Townsend, DE/St. Georges Tech) then got in on the fun in the 67th minute for a 3-2 game, taking a cross from senior Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) and banging in a shot off the left post for his first collegiate goal.

Aghrim’s 28 career assists are second in school history, eight off the top mark held by Matt DiGiacobbe (2001-04), and his 62 points keep him fifth in team annals.

The comeback came to a rousing conclusion in the 71st minute when freshman defender Chari Konomi (Helsingborg, Sweden) found himself inside the box, taking a free kick from sophomore Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil) and scoring his first collegiate goal.

Fittingly, the rematch went to extra time only to see this one end in a draw. The Lightning owned a 6-1 shots edge over the 20 additional minutes with GBC senior Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) halting Sauers on a close shot in front with 90 seconds left in the second overtime.

Scarpinato had four shots and Bismilla totaled six saves for the Lightning (1-6-1, 1-2-1 CACC).

Rocha fired six shots for the Rams (3-2-1, 2-0-1).

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday to visit Post for a 2:30 pm contest in Waterbury, CT. The women’s game precedes it at noon.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Handed First Loss of the Year, 2-0 at New York Tech

Goldey-Beacom looked for a new school-record winning streak, but its season-opening run ended at six with a 2-0 setback at New York Tech in Old Westbury, NY.

Goldey-Beacom (6-1) entered the match coming off its best start in team history and ranked ninth in the East Region according to United Soccer Coaches. But the squad will have to settle for matching the best winning streak in team annals, set from September 25-October 14, 2002.

The Lightning were breached in the 34th minute for their first deficit all season. Maggie Thibault lofted a corner kick for the Bears that Jess Hawley headed home for the latter’s third goal of the year.

Both teams played the next 50 minutes level before New York Tech iced things in the 84th minute for a 2-0 margin. Casey Luongo got the ball, crossed right and put one inside the right post for her first goal of the year.

Sophie Greenwood (Burnley, England) attempted four shots and fellow senior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) totaled four saves for the Lightning.

Luongo amassed five shots and Jessie Sabal recorded three saves for the Bears (5-2).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday travels to Post for a noon match in Waterbury, CT. The men’s game follows at 2:30 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Opens League Play with 5-2 Win Over Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom took the first step in hopes of winning a third straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title, opening league play with a 5-2 victory over Jefferson at McKean High School in Wilmington, DE.

The doubles point went the Lightning’s way, starting with junior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Kristin Radeke (Bremen, Germany) getting a 6-1 victory at third doubles over Usha Baublitz and Katelyn High. That point was clinched at No. 1 doubles with sophomores Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) recording a 6-3 triumph over Marta Yevstakhevych and Lauren Candia.

It was the first match for Lesscher y Post and Zheng since the duo advanced Monday to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region final. Their 22nd career doubles win put each just two victories outside the school’s top 10 list.

Zheng entered the match as the defending CACC Player of the Week.

Freshmen Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela), the two-time reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, and Elin Anderson (Conwy, Wales) notched a 7-5 victory at second doubles over Chang Wei and Millie Coombes.

Lesscher y Post got a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles over Yevstakhevych, Zheng battled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles over Wei, Hortelano Pey amassed a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at fourth singles over Coombes and Andrea Fresneda got a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eryn Nguyen at No. 6 singles.

The victory for Goldey-Beacom (2-0, 1-0 CACC) was its 18th consecutive in a CACC regular-season match dating to 2015. Jefferson (1-2) was playing its first conference match of the season.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday for a rescheduled match against University of the Sciences. Please note the 5:30 pm tie will be competed at the University of Pennsylvania.

Olivia Florence Becomes Goldey-Beacom’s Career Assists Leader in Victory at Concordia (NY)

The standout career of senior Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) took another positive turn as she became Goldey-Beacom’s career assists leader, helping her unit to a 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory (18-25, 26-24, 15-25, 25-19, 15-4) at Concordia in Bronxville, NY.

Florence today needed just six assists to break the record and got it in the opening set on a kill from freshman Shayla Boyce (Somerdale, NJ). As part of her career-high-tying 51 assists, Florence now has 2,196 for her career to top the previous mark of 2,150 held by Danielle Hicks (2005-07).

Florence also had 51 assists September 12, 2015 against Mercy and October 25, 2016 vs. Georgian Court. This marks the fourth straight match she has had at least 20 assists.

The Lightning needed her play as the squad was down 2-1 in the match and only had a 15-14 lead in the fourth set. But Goldey-Beacom went on a 10-5 run to level the contest, with sophomore Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ) getting five kills in that span.

The final set was no contest with GBC amassing nine kills and only two errors over 19 attacks for a .368 hitting percentage. Przywara could not be stopped by getting six kills in that set for the Lightning, who held the Clippers to just two kills and a -.056 percentage in that time.

What can not be lost among Florence’s record-breaking day is the play of Przywara, who pounded a career-best 32 kills to top her previous high of 29 set October 25, 2016 vs. Georgian Court. In addition to a solid .333 percentage, Przywara also had 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the year and fourth in the last five matches.

Boyce ended with 16 kills and 14 digs, senior Megann Santiago (Levittown, NY) recorded 13 digs with Florence and sophomore Courtney Bublitz (North East, MD) adding 12 each for the Lightning (3-12, 1-5 CACC), who ended with a 57-42 kills advantage for their third straight win against the Clippers.

Nilka Rivera recorded 10 kills and Bianca Ortiz had 18 assists for Concordia (0-8, 0-6), who were forced into 21 errors.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday makes the short trip to Newark to face Wilmington for a 7:00 pm contest.

Following a scoreless first half, Goldey-Beacom scored twice in just over three minutes for a 2-0 lead. Fannon got on the board in the 49th minute off a pass from senior Sophie Greenwood (Burnley, England) and freshman Jackie Ayers (Rising Sun, MD) found the back of the net in the 52nd minute thanks to a feed from sophomore Taylor Owen (Pittsburgh, PA).

The Eagles countered with two goals of their own for a 2-2 game. Allison Zollo scored in the 55th minute and Gorgi Van Lienen leveled the match in the 72nd minute.

Greenwood made sure the tie was short lived, burying a penalty kick in the 73rd minute for a 3-2 cushion. But Post battled back for the second time in the match as it was Van Lienen netting her second off Zollo’s pass in the 79th minute.

GBC had a 20-5 shots edge through regulation and ended with a 6-0 cushion in the overtimes, but waited to see if it could change the only score that mattered. The visitors finally did in the 108th minute as a header from sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) made its way to Fannon, who was on the line to nudge it home for her first brace as a member of the Blue and Gold.

The Lightning (7-1, 4-0 CACC) remain on their best start in team history in a week in which they are ranked ninth in the East Region according to United Soccer Coaches. Fannon closed with seven shots, Speaks had five and senior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) had two saves.

Cheyenne Grim kept the Eagles in the match with 14 saves and Van Lienen recorded three shots.

It was Goldey-Beacom’s third overtime win at Post to match the ones in 2010 and 2016.

Goldey-Beacom is home Monday against Jefferson in a rescheduled game at 3:00 pm.

oldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Notches 2-0 Blanking of New York Tech

Goldey-Beacom received a tough battle from New York Tech before getting two goals in the final 10 minutes for a 2-0 triumph at Hockessin Soccer Club in Hockessin, DE.

A strong tussle by two quality teams left the scoreboard with goose eggs most of the way. That was until the 81st minute, when senior Mariano Pereira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) put away a corner kick from freshman Josh Moody (Townsend, DE/St. Georges Tech) for his first goal of the season and second career.

Moody again was on the spot in the 85th minute for a 2-0 Lightning cushion. He corralled the ball and fed a pass to sophomore Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil), who blasted home a 15-yard shot for his second goal of the campaign.

GBC (3-6-1) made it stand with a 13-12 shots edge to run its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1). Sophomore Joe Scarpinato (Middletown, DE) had two shots and senior Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) made two saves for his second straight shutout and 14th career.

Xavi Senlik came off the bench to record two shots and Andrew Pereira amassed four saves for the Bears (5-2-1).

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Caldwell at 3:30 pm. The women’s game between the same schools precedes it at 1:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Falls at No. 6 Mercy

Goldey-Beacom ran into one of its strongest opponents of the season in sixth-ranked Mercy and left Dobbs Ferry, NY with a 6-1 loss.

The Lightning knew this was going to be a challenge and were reminded of that in the fifth minute, when Haley Noble scored on a header for a 1-0 Mavericks lead.

But GBC responded three minutes later. Sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) got a pass from junior and reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll member Jenna Fannon (Newark, DE), was sent in on a breakaway and scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year for a 1-1 tie.

It is Speaks’ 21st career goal, one off from sixth place in team history.

But the Mavericks had it the rest of the way. Noble got her second of the match in the 28th minute and Anicia Reyes scored with 48 seconds left in the opening half for a 3-1 halftime score.

Jessica Hoyt, Mackenzie Warner and Kendall Wright all tallied in the first 24 minutes of the second half for the final.

Senior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) recorded two saves over 64 minutes for the Lightning (8-2), who last week were ranked ninth in the East Region according to United Soccer Coaches.

Noble ended with five shots and Melissa Torres amassed two saves over 73 minutes for Mercy (6-1).

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Caldwell at 1:00 pm, which precedes the men’s 3:30 pm match.

Cliona Crammond’s Free Kick Keeps Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer in First Place With 2-1 Victory Over Caldwell

Senior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) has her name all over Goldey-Beacom’s record book, but she might have scored her biggest goal to date as she tallied in the 73rd minute for her squad’s 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Caldwell at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning struck first in the 39th minute with junior Line Kristoffersen (Bergen, Norway) getting her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) took the initial shot that was saved by goalkeeper Jamie-Lee Banford, but Kristoffersen put home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

Meghan Grundhauser netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 64th minute to level the match. She got a through ball from Teaghan Darling and put one home to make it 1-1.

That set up the heroics from Crammond, who was stationed 30 yards from the cage. She left no doubt by ripping one home for her sixth goal of the season to stop the Lightning’s 11-game winless streak against the Cougars (0-10-1).

Crammond is fifth in team history with 24 goals and 63 points.

GBC made it hold as senior goalkeeper Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) stopped shots from Carlyn Salus in the 74th minute and Darling in the 83rd minute.

Lopez again played great by closing with five saves and now is sixth in team history with 100 saves.

Grundhauser and Salus each had five shots with Bamford making three saves for the Cougars.

Goldey-Beacom (9-2, 6-0 CACC) continued its best start both overall and in the conference in school history. It remains tied for first in the league with Georgian Court (6-0) and Caldwell (6-3, 5-1) drops to third.

Goldey-Beacom and Georgian Court will do battle Tuesday in Pike Creek, starting at 3:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Falls, 2-1, to Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom gave up a late goal and saw its three-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Caldwell at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

Caldwell wasted little time by scoring in the fifth minute for a 1-0 lead. Joaquin Escudero put a through ball in the box that Martin Muller tapped home to open the scoring.

Sophomore Kamran Khan (Blackburn, England) got his first collegiate goal to level the contest in the sixth minute. Junior Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) fed a pass to Kahn from 10 yards out and the latter put it home for a 1-1 game.

A struggle for control then ensued with extra time looming. Muller put an end to that with exactly 17 minutes left, getting another pass Escudero and putting a 10-yard shot inside the right post for his second goal of the season.

GBC had a couple of good chances in the 89th minute with sophomore Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil) and Maruca each getting shots on net, but Nils Svere came up with saves on each.

Freshman Josh Moody (Townsend, DE/St. Georges Tech) came off the bench with four shots and senior Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) had five saves for the Lightning (3-7-1, 2-3-1 CACC).

Muller had three shots and Svere made five saves for the Cougars (4-5-1, 4-1-1).

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday hosts Georgian Court at 4:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Dealt Gut-Wrenching 3-2 Loss at Bloomfield

In about as tough a loss as it gets, Goldey-Beacom pushed its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at Bloomfield to a fifth set before it was handed a painful 3-2 loss (17-25, 26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 21-23) in Bloomfield, NJ.

GBC won a grueling second set to level the match by getting 14 kills and a .229 hitting percentage. Shayla Boyce (Somerdale, NJ) continued her solid freshman campaign by getting seven kills in the set.

The Lightning took the lead in the match with 12 kills in the third set thanks to yet another strong showing from sophomore Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ), who pounded eight kills in that span.

Then came the fifth set, in which the Lightning fought off three match points to get things level at 14. With the winner decided by the next team to have a two-point lead, GBC fought off six more match points to keep extending the contest. But an attack error on the Bears’ 10th match point ended the marathon.

Przywara again played great with 24 kills and 22 digs for her seventh double-double of the season with Boyce getting 20 and 15 for her sixth double-double.

Freshman Autumn Spendlove (Las Vegas, NV) had 23 assists and 14 digs for her first double-double, senior Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) recorded 23 and 12 for her fourth this season, sophomore Courtney Bublitz (North East, MD) notched 17 digs and senior Megann Santiago (Levittown, NY) added 13 for GBC (3-15, 1-8 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom’s Women’s Soccer Equals School Record for Wins in 3-1 Triumph Over Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom got a pair of second-half goals from junior Jenna Fannon (Newark, DE) and tied the school record for most victories with a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Wilmington (DE) at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The score was level at 1-1 when Fannon continued her solid debut campaign by breaking the tie 6:40 into the half. Senior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) sent a great through ball into the box that Fannon corralled and put inside the right post for a 2-1 lead.

Fannon again was on the spot nine minutes later for a 3-1 cushion. She won a 50/50 ball 25 yards from cage and put a great shot just over the goalkeeper for her 13th goal of the year, tied for the fourth-best single-season mark in team history.

Crammond now is third by herself in team history with 18 assists and remains third outright with 76 points.

Freshman Melayna Immediato (Hockessin, DE/Delaware Military Academy) in the 28th minute scored her ninth goal of the season to give GBC a 1-0 lead before Jessica Unsihuay’s fifth marker of the year tied it for Wilmington in the 32nd minute.

Fannon, Immediato and sophomore Taylor Owen (Pittsburgh, PA) had three shots apiece and senior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) made one save for the Lightning, who notched their third straight win over the Wildcats (8-9-1, 7-4-1 CACC).

Kate Tubo played great for the Wildcats with six saves, which included stopping a penalty shot from senior Sophie Greenwood (Burnley, England) in the 42nd minute.

Goldey-Beacom (14-4, 11-1) has clinched the number two seed for the CACC Tournament, matching its seed from 2003 for the highest in school history, and will face seventh-seeded Nyack in the quarterfinals on Monday. Game time at NCS Field is 2:00 pm.

The Lightning also equaled the mark of 14 victories set during both the 2001 and 2002 campaigns. GBC also extended its school record for most goals in a year to 58.
