Goldey-Beacom Baseball Finalizes 2018 Schedule

Goldey-Beacom’s baseball team took huge strides during its inaugural campaign and looks to continue that as its 2018 schedule was released.

GBC once again will leave the cold and head south to open the campaign, this time with seven games in North Carolina. The squad opens February 17-18 with a three-game series at Lenoir-Rhyne and then plays a four-game set February 24-25 at Chowan.

The Lightning play their home opener at Doyle Field in Hockessin on March 3 in a doubleheader against Millersville and then six days later host Clarion in another doubleheader. GBC plays 18 of its first 22 games on the road.

Play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference starts March 17 at Caldwell and ends April 28 at home vs. Nyack. GBC faces local-rival Wilmington (DE) on March 23 in New Castle and April 20 in Hockessin before hosting defending league-champion Dominican (NY) on April 21.

The league once again will try to use the two-division format and play 32 games. GBC is in the South Division along with Wilmington (DE), U. of the Sciences, Jefferson, Chestnut Hill and Felician. It will play each team in two doubleheaders – one at home and one on the road – for a total of 20 games. The first game each day is nine innings and the second is a seven-inning contest.

The North Division includes Caldwell, Bloomfield, Concordia (NY), Dominican (NY), Nyack and Post. The Lightning will play each of these schools in one doubleheader for a total of 12 contests. All non-division games are nine innings.

This format was intended to be used last season before bad weather causing poor field conditions took over, forcing a 22-game league format.

The top four teams in each division advance to the CACC Tournament. The quarterfinals feature a single-elimination game May 5 with each contest at the higher seed. The four remaining schools play in the double-elimination portion May 10-12 in Waterbury, CT.

Goldey-Beacom (10-35, 5-17 CACC) had an impressive first season under coach Tom Riley after the program was introduced in the fall of 2015. The squad played its first game as a Division II member February 18 at Barton, its first home game March 5 against Queens (NY), notched its first victory March 24 at Chestnut Hill and its first doubleheader sweep April 21 against Chestnut Hill.

One of the main highlights included senior outfielder Raul Perez-Duran (Trenton, NJ) being named second team All-CACC. He closed 27th in the CACC with a .299 batting average, 38th with a .389 slugging percentage, 25th with 43 hits, second on the team with 39 2/3 innings pitched, eighth with 14 RBI, tied for third with five steals, fifth with 19 runs and sixth with 18 strikeouts. Perez-Duran also was the first batter in team history and enters the year with an eight-game hitting streak at Doyle Field.

Another key component back is sophomore outfielder Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE/Dover), who made an immediate impact with his hitting and all-around solid play. He closed 11th in the CACC with a .333 batting average, eighth with a .431 on base percentage, 18th with 26 RBI, 20th with 46 hits, 27th with 27 runs, 35th with a .391 slugging percentage and 45th with five stolen bases. Thomas also recorded the first hit (single), RBI, stolen base, three-hit game and three-RBI game in school history.

Senior captain Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) gave GBC plenty of consistency in every facet, starting 45 games that included 42 starts at third base and finishing 16th in the CACC with 10 doubles, seventh with 42 runs, eighth with five home runs, 16th with a .410 on base percentage and 17th with a .455 slugging percentage. Sophomore Brandon Ferrie (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) tossed the most innings for the Lightning a season ago at 53 2/3 innings – 19th in the CACC – and should see even more action this year after closing 24th in the league with 34 strikeouts.

GBC also won the sport's CACC Sportsmanship Award, given to the team which best displays class, character, sportsmanship and competitive spirit. The conference presents one such award for every sport each academic year.

Three-Peat: Goldey-Beacom’s Joe Kissel Picked USTA District College Coach of the Year

The latest accomplishments for Goldey-Beacom’s women’s tennis team was more than enough for coach Joe Kissel to be named the United States Tennis Association District College Coach of the Year for a third consecutive year.

This year’s honor for Kissel was picked among coaches from Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His two previous awards were from Delaware.

The award will be presented during a brunch February 25 in Wilmington, DE.

It was yet another solid calendar year for the Lightning, starting with the team competing in the NCAA Tournament a second straight year. After the squad won the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title in the fall, the team in the spring upended Southern New Hampshire in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling in a hard-fought match at 44th-ranked Queens.

Goldey-Beacom (14-4, 7-0 CACC) at season’s end closed third in the East Region, saw three of its players regionally ranked, recorded its best conference record in team history, was the top seed in the CACC Tournament for the first time and its 11-0 start was the best in team annals.

In addition, senior Nina Sengl was picked third team CoSIDA Academic All-America and was the College’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.

The calendar year provided more heroics as the Lightning won a second straight CACC crown to clinch their seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. GBC (11-0) matched its best start in team history by upending Wilmington (DE), 5-3, in the conference final to mark the third straight year it played for the league crown.

Kissel was rewarded for this in being tabbed CACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time. He also saw three of his players named all-league and Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) picked the conference’s Rookie of the Year.

Goldey-Beacom ended 2017 with four of its players ranked in the East Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. After the calendar flipped to 2018, the Lightning found out they are ranked second in the East.

Kissel has amassed a 127-66 mark in 12 seasons. His USTA honor in 2015 came on the heels of the Lightning going a school-record 18-5, winning an NCAA Tournament match and ending the season ranked 31st in the country.

It is Kissel’s fourth honor from the USTA as he was picked the 2009 United States Tennis Association Middle States Delaware District Community Tennis Coach of the Year.

Goldey-Beacom Baseball Gains a Tie and a Loss at Chowan

Goldey-Beacom opened things at Chowan with a tough 10-9, extra-inning loss before settling for a 3-3 tie that was called due to darkness in Murfreesboro, NC.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the first inning of game one plated four runs, keyed by RBI singles from senior Jay Smith (Zeeland, MI) and freshman Andy Salzmann (Dunmore, PA). With the score tied at four entering the third, senior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) launched a two-run homer and junior Matthew Buckery (Wilmington, DE/Cairn U.) added an RBI single to make it 7-4.

It was 8-8 entering the seventh and final inning of regulation when sophomore Justin Hill (Seaford, DE/Sussex Tech) scored on a passed ball to put the Lightning ahead. But the Hawks came back for the third time in the contest, tying it on a two-out single from Anthony Jefferson.

Chowan took its first lead on the final pitch of the game, getting an RBI single in the eighth from Corey Fago to score Trent Brosdahl and end the almost three-hour contest.

Smith continued his strong start with three hits, a home run and two RBI. Marsden had three RBI and freshman Andrew Emory (Newark, DE/Newark) gave up a run and two hits over one-third of an inning in the eighth.

Brosdahl had two home runs and six RBI to pace the Hawks. Daniel Whitener tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings for the victory with two strikeouts.

The Lightning in game two got on the board in the top of the third inning, when senior Edwin Lee (La Plata, MD) ripped a blast over the right-field fence for his second homer of the season and third career.

The margin ballooned to 2-0 in the fourth. Junior Calvin Clark (Millville, NJ) led off with a single, took third on a sacrifice from Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE/Dover) and crossed home off a fielder’s choice from fellow sophomore Cole Collins (Laurel, DE/Sussex Tech).

Marsden gave the Lightning what turned out to be a big insurance run, leading off the seventh with a home run to right-center field for a 3-0 margin. It was his school-record seventh career long ball.

Goldey-Beacom’s 41st-ranked women’s tennis team today learned it will be the top seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament and has earned a bye into the championship’s second round.

GBC will play Sunday at noon against the winner of Saturday’s first-round match between fourth-seeded Concordia (NY) and fifth-seeded Adelphi. Saturday’s match takes place at 1:00 pm.

Both aforementioned matches will be held on the campus of West Chester University in West Chester, PA. The address is 855 South New Street, West Chester, PA 19383.

The winner of Sunday’s match advances to the “Sweet 16,” which takes place May 8 against an opponent to be determined in Surprise, AZ.

It has been another banner year for Goldey-Beacom (16-2, 8-0 CACC), which defeated Wilmington (DE), 5-3, on October 22 for its second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title and seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. The squad was the top seed in the CACC Tournament for the second straight year, has won 17 consecutive regular-season league matches dating to 2015, appeared in the conference final in back-to-back years for the first time since going three straight seasons from 2009-11 and equaled its best start in team history.

The team has had many bright spots in this banner year. One of them is Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden), who was named the CACC Rookie of the Year and owns the school’s single-season record with 20 doubles triumphs (20-4). She also has 17 singles victories (17-3), tied for the second most for one season in team annals.

Regner and sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) teamed to make the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region final last fall in doubles and earlier this season were ranked as high as 35th in the country. The latter, who was named first team all-conference a second straight year and was picked to the all-tournament team, is 16-5 in singles this year, 16-3 in doubles and competed in the ITA East Region semifinals.

Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) is ranked ninth in the East in singles and has paired with fellow freshman Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) to go 16-5 in doubles, earning a No. 4 ranking in the East, and played in the ITA East Region semifinals. Zheng is 11th in the East with a 17-3 singles mark and Anna Hortelano Pey is 12th.

Sophomore Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) is 10-2 in doubles and 10-6 in singles.

All of this helped Joe Kissel to be named CACC Coach of the Year for a fourth time and United States Tennis Association Middle States College Coach of the Year, his third straight USTA honor.

GBC last season defeated Southern New Hampshire in the first round for the program’s second NCAA Tournament win. It is the only women’s program in school history to win an NCAA Tournament contest.

Battling for the CACC Tournament, Goldey-Beacom Baseball Splits with Chestnut Hill

Winding down to a nail-biting finish for the final tournament spots in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division, Goldey-Beacom Baseball split with Chestnut Hill, 5-1 and 4-11 in Philadelphia, PA.

Down 1-0 in the fourth inning, Goldey-Beacom started to answer the call when sophomore Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE) smacked an RBI double to left center scoring senior Jay Smith (Zeeland, MI).

In the following inning, the Lightning smelled blood rounding off four runs. The go-ahead run came off a two-run RBI Double from Raul Perez-Duran (senior from Trenton, NJ) bringing home Keegan Marsden (senior from Stratford, ON) and Justin Hill (sophomore from Seaford, DE) on the play, increasing the lead to 3-1.

Marsden went 2-for-3 from the plate recording the only multi-hit game for a member of the Lightning.

Mitch Guerrieri (4-4), the freshman from Greentown, PA, threw like a machine. He pitched eight innings and allowed one earned run on six hits.

Thomas Hughes (0-1) received the loss for the Griffins.

Chestnut Hill (17-19, 13-13 CACC) held the lead for the entirety of game two.

The Lightning made a final push in the fifth inning with a two-run homer from Jason Rowe (three RBI), the senior from West Hills, CA, decreasing the Griffins lead to 5-4.

However, the Griffins bats became too much for the Lightning to control. John Contoudis and Demetrius Isaac both tallied multi-RBI games. Sam Barletta (3-for-3, two runs) and Matthew Owens (2-for-3) also provided solid offense for Chestnut Hill.

Billy Bethel (5-2) earned the win for the Griffins pitching seven innings and striking out nine batters while allowing two earned runs.

Trevor Jump (4-4), the freshman from Wilmington, DE, took the loss on the mound.

Goldey-Beacom (16-26-1, 14-14 CACC) returns to the diamond for a CACC doubleheader at Jefferson on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The Lightning are in third place of the CACC South and finishing in the top four will secure a tournament spot.

No. 41 Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Handed Tough 5-2 Loss by Concordia (NY) in the NCAA Tournament

No. 41 Goldey-Beacom was presented a battle with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-rival Concordia (NY) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but could not take the next step with a tough 5-2 loss in West Chester, PA.

Concordia (18-4), ranked fourth in the region, grabbed the first point in doubles with Josefina Torres and Tadi Mrewa getting an 8-2 triumph at number three over junior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Ecuador) and sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain). Sophomore Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) leveled the tie for GBC with an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 doubles over Kristel Kalm and Franziska Putschbach.

It was Regner’s 21st doubles victory, extending her own single-season school record.

The lead heading into singles was in the balance at first doubles and it was the Clippers who prevailed. Siri Victorsson and Angelica Karlsson muscled their way to an 8-5 triumph over freshmen Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal).

Concordia widened its margin to 3-1 with a victory at fifth singles as Mrewa got a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Cornejo. Zheng got that right back at No. 2 singles, having no trouble with Kalm in a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Zheng’s 18th singles victory of the season places her second on the GBC single-season list behind Stephanie Puentes Robinson, who won 19 matches in 2012-13.

The score stayed at 3-2 for the longest time before things ended. Putschbach notched a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over Silvia Hortelano Pey at sixth singles and, seconds later, Torres completed her comeback with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles over Anna Hortelano Pey.

The loss ends another glorious season for the Lightning (16-3, 8-0 CACC), who received a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history and competed in the second round for a third time in the last four years. GBC also entered the match ranked first in the NCAA East Region.

Goldey-Beacom defeated Wilmington (DE), 5-3, on October 22 for its second consecutive CACC title and seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. The squad was the top seed in the CACC Tournament for the second straight year, has won 17 consecutive regular-season league matches dating to 2015, appeared in the conference final in back-to-back years for the first time since going three straight seasons from 2009-11 and equaled its best start in team history.

Goldey-Beacom Baseball Falls, 8-3, at Post in the CACC Tournament

Playing in its first conference-tournament game in school history, Goldey-Beacom saw its standout season end with an 8-3 loss at Post in the first round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament in Waterbury, CT.

The loss ends an incredible season for the Lightning (19-28-1), who are just in their second year since the reinstitution of a sport that competed for Goldey College more than a half-century ago. The combination of freshmen and seasoned players helped this year’s unit win five of its last eight games to reach the eight-team field and close above .500 in the conference (17-15).

GBC on Monday got into the tournament with a 17-3 pounding of Jefferson in what was an elimination game for both schools.

Post in the last of the first inning today loaded the bases with two out and freshman pitcher Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA) tried to work his way out of a jam. But Alex Wright had other ideas as his two-run single to left opened the scoring for a 2-0 lead.

The Lightning got one back in the fifth for a 2-1 deficit. Sophomore Brandon Hanson (Bayonne, NJ) lined a leadoff double and senior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON), two batters later, brought him home with an RBI double.

The Eagles restored momentum in the last of the fifth with three runs for a 5-1 cushion. Rosario Missiti crushed a two-run triple and then scored when Jose Vasquez’ grounder was misplayed for an error.

Mike Lisinicchia and Missiti added run-scoring singles in the sixth to give Post a 7-1 lead. Trailing 8-1 entering the eighth, the Lightning got a bases-loaded walk from sophomore Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) and a sacrifice fly from Marsden for an 8-3 contest.

It was Marsden’s 32nd RBI of the season, extending his own school record.

Senior Jay Smith (Zeeland, MI) and sophomore Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) had two hits apiece with Marsden getting two RBI. Guerrieri (4-5) permitted two runs and two hits over two innings with one strikeout.

Nick Arnold (8-2) struck out four over six innings, surrendering one run and seven hits for the Eagles (29-20). Missiti, Wright and John Cartagena Jr. all had two hits.

oldey-Beacom’s Catarina Zheng Named to CACC Monthly Honor Roll

A strong month in a championship season for Goldey-Beacom freshman Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) enabled her to be named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Tennis Monthly Honor Roll.

Zheng in April went 4-1 at second singles and 3-2 in first doubles. She got three of her singles victories in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Kristel Kalm from Concordia (NY) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Zheng and freshman Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) gutted out a 9-8 triumph over regionally ranked Queens (NY) and then got an 8-2 victory over perennial power West Chester.

It was a more than impressive debut season for Zheng, who amassed a team-best 18-3 singles record that included 14-2 at No. 2 and 16-6 at doubles which included 13-5 at No. 1. She was named first team all-conference, a member of the CACC All-Tournament team and is ranked ninth in the region in singles.

Zheng advanced to the ITA East Region quarterfinals and, along with Lesscher y Post, played in the doubles semifinals. Zheng’s singles victories are one shy of the team’s single-season mark and her doubles wins have her tied for second.

Goldey-Beacom (16-3, 8-0 CACC) had yet another standout campaign in which it won the CACC title for a second straight year and clinched its seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Lightning were ranked as high of 36th in the country, are presently 40th in the nation and entered postseason first in the region.

This included junior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ), senior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) as well as sophomores Cole Collins (Laurel, DE/Sussex Tech), Jake Kinsell (Carmichaels, PA) and Brandon Hanson (Bayonne, NJ).

That came in his following appearance after getting 10 strikeouts over seven innings April 13 at University of the Sciences.
