DATE:  December 12, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- Trey Wilkes, a former captain and standout faceoff specialist at Ohio State University, has joined new University of Delaware men’s lacrosse head coach Ben DeLuca and his staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

Wilkes, a native of Ijamsville, Md. in Frederick County, joins DeLuca and assistant coaches Noah Fossner and Matt Rewkowski on the staff. He will work with the faceoff specialists.

Delaware will begin the DeLuca Era on Feb. 10 when the Blue Hens open the official season at Delaware Stadium vs. Mt. St. Mary’s.

“Trey is an impressive young coach with a strong work ethic and a keen understanding of the intricacies of the game of lacrosse,” said DeLuca. “Trey’s values and character align perfectly with Delaware Lacrosse and our student-athletes will benefit greatly from his passion, dedication and knowledge.”

Wilkes attended Urbana High School where he earned All-American honors while helping the Hawks reach three Maryland State championships and four regional finals. He won the team’s Groundball Award as a freshman in 2010 when he led the team with 41 while also winning 94 faceoffs. He won 51 faceoffs, including going 18 for 18 vs. Mercer, and scooped up 22 groundballs as a sophomore before injuries limited him to just six games in 2012. He played in 51 career games, won 51 percent of his faceoffs, and collected 135 groundballs.

During his career at Ohio State, Wilkes earned second team All ECAC honors, was a 2013 Scholar All-American, a two-time All-Academic Big Ten selection, and a three-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete. He also earned the prestigious Lindner Memorial Scholarship for his character and work ethic.

After earning his degree with honors in strategic communications with a minor in general business in 2013 from OSU, he briefly joined the professional ranks and competed for the Baltimore Bayhawks and the Ohio Machine in Major League Lacrosse. SUBJECT: Big Second Half Comeback Gives Women’s Lacrosse 13-12 Victory at Converse for Kevin Day’s First Coaching Victory

DATE: March 13, 2018
djl

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - - Trailing by five goals at the halftime break, the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team stormed back to claim its first victory of the season, 13-12, at Converse in nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon at Fulp Field.

The Wildcats (1-4) scored the first three goals of the second half en route to a 7-1 run out of the break. Converse (2-7) took the lead back with back-to-back goals, 12-11, but the Wildcats answered with the final two goals of the game just 34 seconds apart to take the victory.

The win is the first collegiate coaching victory for first year head coach Kevin Day.

With the game knotted at 1-1 in the early going, Converse ran off four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 16:32 left in the first half. Lashay Ross and Marisa Parker scored back-to-back goals for the Wildcats to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Valkyries ended the opening 20 minutes by scores four of the final five goals to lead 9-4 at the break.

La’Dae Boykin started the scoring in the second half with a goal from Sam Foster, starting a three-goal streak for the Wildcats. Taylor Lambeth scored off a feed from Boykin before Boykin brought the Wildcats to within 9-7 with 19:41 with another goal.

Converse ended the run with a goal for the three-goal lead, but the Wildcats answered with a 4-0 spurt to take their first lead of the game. Boykin and Parker brought the Wildcats to within one before Ross scored back-to-back goals for the 11-10 lead with 14:14 to play in regulation.

The Valkyries responded once again with back-to-back tallies, regaining the leaf with 3:24 left in the game. But the Wildcats weren’t done, as Lambeth converted a free position shot to knot the game at 12 with 2:46 showing on the clock.

Christina Ziegler scooped up the ensuing draw control and Ross scored her fourth of the day to give the Wildcats the lead just 34 seconds later, 13-12.

Converse had a free position attempt opportunity with just over a minute to play, but goalkeeper Maddie Hurm came up with the biggest of her 11 saves of the day to keep the Wildcats in front. The ensuing clear attempt was good for the Wildcats and they were able to take a big chunk of the remaining time off the clock. The Valkyries got the ball back, but with only 11 seconds on the clock, unable to get down the field.

Boykin led the Wildcats with four goals and an assist while Ross added four goals as well. Parker picked up her first hat trick of the year with three goals while adding an assist.

The Valkyries gained more draws, 14-13, but Ross dominated the draw for the Wildcats, picking up 10 of the team’s 13. The 10 draws are the third most in Wilmington’s program history and only trail Rebekah McCurry’s 13 in 2015 and Danielle Niccoli’s 11 in 2008.

The Wildcats will look to carry the momentum of the second half into their next game, as they head to Queens (NY) for another nonconference game on Saturday. The opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: One for the Books: Men’s Lacrosse Captures Program’s First Victory, 11-4, Over St. Thomas Aquinas

NEWARK, Del. - - It only took four games but the Wilmington University men’s lacrosse team finally has its first victory in program history, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas, 11-4, on Wednesday at the WU Athletics Complex.

A lot of first happened for the Wildcats on Wednesday, including the first four-goal game, the first multiple goal lead, lead after a quarter, and holding an opponent scoreless in a quarter. But the most important first game as the buzzer sounded, as the Wildcats (1-3) earned the program’s first victory in its first season.

The Wildcats got off to a hot start in the first quarter, scoring on their first shot just 48 seconds into the contest. Josh Burley netted the ripper for the quick 1-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season. Dylan McCleaft wasted little time to add to the lead, as Burley won the ensuing face-off to gain control once more. McCleaft scored his first goal of the contest with 13:18 to play, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead on two shots.

The Spartans cut the Wildcats lead in half with a goal but the Wildcats finished off the opening 15 minutes with two more goals, as Chris Smith and John Novak got in on the scoring. The Wildcats led 4-1 after the first quarter.

The second quarter got off to a slower start for the Wildcats, but McCleaft tallied his second of the game with 5:54 to play before the half for the 5-1 lead before Burley added his second of the day just two minutes later for the 6-1 advantage. The Wildcats won the second quarter, 2-0, for the first scoreless quarter of the year.

Another four-goal quarter aided the Wildcats, as they again scored out of the gates to start the second half. Novak started the quarter with a shot off the crossbar, but the Wildcats kept possession and McCleaft finished for his third of the day just 34 seconds into the quarter. Burley made it 8-1 in favor of the home team just one minute later, finishing off a feed from Cory Melvin for the hat trick with 13:25 left in the frame.

After McCleaft scored his fourth of the day late in the third, Jake Gies got into the scoring column with 3:31 left, putting the Wildcats ahead, 10-2, after three quarters of play

The Spartans scored twice in the fourth, but around the fourth goal by Burley to keep the visitors at an arm’s length.

The Wildcats controlled the pace of play most of the afternoon, leading in shots, 44-21, face-offs, 13-6, ground balls, 31-29, and finished with fewer turnovers, 16-13.

Burley led all scorers with four goals and an assist while McCleaft also scored four times. Burley won 12 face-offs, adding 10 ground balls in the win. Kyle Leary and Jon Howell led the Wildcats with two caused turnovers.

Noah Given was outstanding in net for the Wildcats, finishing with 11 saves on 15 shots faced.

The Wildcats will look to carry the momentum into their next contest, as they will face Montevallo on March 24 at the Norfolk Collegiate School in Norfolk, Virginia. The opening face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Lashay Ross dominated the offensive zone on Saturday, scoring seven goals while adding one assist. She also tied her own single game record with 13 draw controls, none bigger than the final one of the day after West Virginia Wesleyan scored with 1:26 to play to draw to within 16-15.
