WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilmington University men’s lacrosse team outscored the District of Columbia, 5-0, in the third quarter, opening a large lead in route to a 15-8 nonconference road victory on Saturday afternoon.

The home team came out and took a quick lead over the Wildcats (2-0), 3-2, in the first quarter. But the Wildcats answered with the first three goals of the second, and took a 6-4 lead into the halftime break. The game was decided in the third quarter, as the Wildcats outscored the Firebirds (2-3), 5-0, to open a 11-4 lead going into the final frame.

The Firebirds closed to as close as 13-8 with three straight goals in the fourth, but the Wildcats scored the final two marks to win their first two games of the year for the first time in the program’s three-year existence.

Trailing 3-1 late in the first, Logan Stinson scored to end the first quarter trailing 3-2. The Wildcats kept the momentum going into the second quarter, scoring three-straight to take a 5-3 lead. They received goals from Giovanni Marino, Austin Wood, and Jared Wagenhoffer to hold a 5-3 lead with 5:30 to play before the half. The Firebirds stopped the streak with a goal, but Keeshawn Bell closed the half with a goal with 1:25 left, as the Wildcats took a 6-4 lead into the locker room.

Out of the break, the scoring continued for the Wildcats, as Marino scored back-to-back goals to put the visitors up 8-4. Keeshawn Bell scored a goal off a feed from Dalton Ziemba for the 9-4 lead before scoring another goal with 5:39 to play to go up 10-4. The scoring ended in the quarter with a Noah Tuohey goal, capping the run at six-straight as the Wildcats led 11-4 after three quarters.

After the Firebirds scored, Marino and Jared Pheasant scored back-to-back goals to go up 13-5, their largest lead of the afternoon. The District of Columbia scored three straight goals to close the gap to 13-8, but it wasn’t enough as Nico Torres scored his first collegiate career goal and Noah Tuohey finished the game with a goal, putting the final margin at 15-8.

Giovanni Marino led the Wildcats with four goals while Keeshawn Bell added a hat trick with three goals. Noah Tuohey finished with two goals and an assist. Noah Given stopped 19 shots in 52 minutes while Nick Race made three saves in the final eight minutes.

The Wildcats outshot the Firebird, 45-39, and went 13-of-15 on clear chances in the game.

The Wildcats remain on the road for their next contest, as they visit Barton next Saturday, February 29. The opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in North Carolina.

Balanced Attack Keys 15-11 Road Win at Bucknell
Jack Myers, Jackson Reid and Tre Leclaire combine to score 11 goals

COLUMBUS, Ohio
– The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (3-1) picked up its second road win of the 2020 season, using a well-balanced offense attack, strong defense in the ride game and timely saves to defeat No. 20 Bucknell (3-1), 15-11, at Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday.

The Short Story
Ohio State scored eight unanswered goals during a key first-half run as they erased an early 4-1 deficit and never looked back. The starting attack unit of Jack Myers (4G, 4A), Tre Leclaire (4G) and Jackson Reid (3G, 1A) combined to score 11 of the Buckeyes’ 15 goals.

The Buckeyes’ ride game, which came in as one of the best units in the country allowing teams to clear successfully just 75 percent of the time, limited Bucknell to 14-of-21 (.667) and created key transition goals. Face-off specialist Justin Inacio made his 2020 debut and won 14-of-24 in the X while goalie Josh Kirson made 13 saves, including nine in the second half.

Quotable
“Bucknell is a tough team who throws a lot at you,” said head coach Nick Myers. “We weathered the first wave and settled in and played our most complete quarter in the second. I thought our effort and execution on the special teams was a difference maker for us today. Back to work this week and excited to be home in front of our fans.”

Moving Up the Charts
Leclaire, who now has at least one goal in 22 consecutive games, moved into sole possession of fourth place on Ohio State’s career goals scored list. He passed fellow British Columbia native Jesse King with a second-quarter score to put Ohio State ahead 9-4. In 51 career games, Leclaire has 122 goals and is one shy of Terry Gilmore (1976-79) for third place.

How The Goals Were Scored

  • Inacio, who did not play in the first three games of the season, made his presence felt right away. He won the game’s opening face-off and put Ohio State ahead 1-0 just five seconds into regulation.
  • From there, Bucknell would go on a 4-0 run over the next 10 minutes. Myers broke the drought and started the game-changing rally for Ohio State, as it would find the back of the net eight times over a 15-minute span to take a 9-4 lead.
  • Reid scored three times in the eight-goal run while Leclaire and Myers each had a pair of goals. Also getting in the scoring column was Colby Smith, who netted his first of the season.
  • Bucknell scored once before halftime to make the score 9-5 and then twice to start the third quarter to pull itself within two at 9-7. From there, however, the Myers-to-Leclaire combo gave the Buckeyes a three-goal cushion at 7:41 of the third quarter and J.T. Bugliosi scored a three-quarters field goal four minutes later.
  • In the fourth quarter, Bucknell would get no closer than 12-10 with 9:34 remaining. Leclaire, Griffin Hughes and Myers scored in succession to push the lead to 15-10 at 2:25. Bucknell closed out the scoring with a Will Yorke goal at :37.

This and That

· Bucknell entered the game nation’s seventh-ranked extra man offense, but Ohio State held the Bison scoreless in four attempts on Saturday.

· Ten different players had a point for the Buckeyes on Saturday.

· In two career games against Bucknell, Myers has 16 points on 11 goals and five assists.

· The Buckeyes improved to 15-1 in the month of February over the last four seasons.

· For the season, teams are successfully clearing just 74.4 percent of the time (67-of-90).

· Over the last three games, Kirson has 43 saves and a .642 save percentage.

· Inacio has won 10 or more face-offs in each of the last 18 games that he’s played in.

  • The two teams met for the first time ever in 2000.
  • Four graduates of The Hill Academy will be on the field Sunday in Columbus: Jeff Teat of Cornell along with Ohio State’s Jeff Henrick, Justin Inacio and Josh Kirson.

Scouting Cornell

  • The Big Red, which finished 10-5 last year and lost in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals, has started 2020 with wins over Albany, Towson and High Point.
  • Cornell is ranked No. 9 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 10 in this week’s Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
  • Cornell has scored 17 or more goals in each of their first three games. Four players – Jonathan Donville, Jeff Teat, John Piatelli and Michael Long – already have 10 or more points.
  • Angelo Petrakis, a freshman, and Paul Rasimowicz, a senior, have combined to take 90 of the team’s 98 face-offs through three games. Both are winning 60 percent or better of their chances.

Chasing History

  • Last Saturday, senior Tre Leclaire passed fellow British Columbia native Jesse King for sole possession of fourth place on Ohio State’s all-time goals scored list.
  • Another strong outing on Sunday could put Leclaire into second place. With 122 career goals, he’s currently one behind Terry Gilmore (1976-79) for third place and four behind Joel Dalgarno (2006-09) for second.
  • Logan Schuss, who is also from British Columbia, is Ohio State’s career goals leader with 147 from 2010-13.

The Ride Game

  • The Buckeyes have seen a remarkable increase in the turnovers caused in their ride game over the first four games.
  • Last year, Ohio State finished 65th nationally in opponent clearing percentage at .883. This year, the Buckeyes are No. 5 at .744. They’ve turned opponents over 23 times while clearing (5.75 times per game).

Home Sweet Home

  • Sunday begins a four-game homestand for the Scarlet and Gray that will continue next Saturday when the Buckeyes host Hofstra at noon.
  • Ohio State is 30-11 at home since the start of the 2015 season with 11 victories over ranked opponents.

National Television Schedule Announced

  • There will be plenty of Buckeye lacrosse on television as the 2020 season progresses.

  • Ohio State’s entire Big Ten slate will be shown on BTN, including home games vs. Penn State (April 5), Johns Hopkins (April 19) and Michigan (April 25) with road contests at Rutgers (March 28) and Maryland (April 12).
  • The Buckeyes’ game vs. Notre Dame on Tuesday, March 10 will also be on BTN. The possibility exists for an eighth TV game on Sunday, March 15 if the Ohio State men’s ice hockey team is not hosting a Big Ten Tournament semifinal game.

This and That

  • Ohio State is one of just two teams in the country (Jacksonville is the other) to rank in the top five in both clearing percentage and opponent clearing percentage.
  • Tre Leclaire’s streak of 22 consecutive games with a goal is the 10th longest active streak in the country.
  • Leclaire is also six points shy of passing Carter Brown (2013-16) for eighth on Ohio State’s all-time points list. He has 156 points in 51 career games.
  • Jeff Henrick ranks second in the Big Ten in caused turnovers per game (1.50).

Penn State leads the Big Ten, and ranks 19th in the country, allowing only 8.25 goals per game. The blue and white ranks second in the country with a .645 save percentage.

Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Suplee is a major part of the defensive success. She made a career-high 20 saves in the win over Cornell, including 16 in the first half. Her previous high was 18 against Maryland in the Big Ten Semifinals. It was PSU’s first 20-save performance since 2007. She has the only 20-save performance in Division I this season.

For her efforts against Cornell, Suplee earned her second Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award this season. She leads the Big Ten in save percentage (.654), goals-against average (8.04), saves per game (12.75) and groundballs per game (4.25). She is also second in the conference with 51 total saves. CARTER EARNS EARLY SEASON HONORS

Senior attacker Madison Carter was selected to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Wednesday. She was named a third-team Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse in January. Carter returns for her fifth year after suffering an injury early last season. She graduated in May with a degree in Rehabilitation and Human Services and is pursuing a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She is a two-time IWLCA All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten selection.

Through the first six games of the 2019 season, Carter tallied 17 goals, four assists, five groundballs, 24 draw controls and two caused turnovers. She had three multi-point games, including a career high-tying six goals against Cornell. She also had five goals and six draw controls at Princeton.

SECOND YEAR IN PANZER

The Nittany Lions will open up their second season in Panzer Stadium on Saturday. Penn State earned five home wins in 2019, including four in Panzer Stadium.

The state-of-the-art venue was dedicated on September 23, 2018. The stadium project was made possible through the efforts of Ken Panzer, a 1982 graduate and former co-captain of the men's lacrosse team, and his long-time business partner at Douglas Emmett, Jordan Kaplan. In May 2017, the duo committed a $3.55 million gift to transform the Penn State Lacrosse Field into one of the premier lacrosse stadiums in the country. Additional gifts by Penn State lacrosse alumni and donors totaled $2 million, bringing the total donations to $5.6 million.

SUBJECT: Bloomsburg Controls the Draw Circle in 24-9 Win over Women’s Lacrosse

DATE: February 28, 2020
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Bloomsburg took advantage of a 27-8 difference in draw controls, leading to a 24-9 nonconference victory over the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team on Friday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Despite a 20-3 disadvantage on draws in the first half, the Wildcats (1-3) kept the match within striking distance against the Huskies (3-1) by scoring on seven of their 11 shots in the first half. But the Huskies started to pull away last in the first half, going on a 5-1 scoring run to end the half, then a 6-0 run to start the second.

Bloomsburg opened the game by scoring five of the first six goals, and jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Brooke Siebert got on the board to make it a 7-3 game with 21:24 left in the half, but Bloomsburg again scored two-straight to open the lead back up to 9-3. Taylor Lambeth scored with 16:40 to play and then the Wildcats’ Lashay Ross scored back-to-back goals to close the game to 10-6 with 12:56 showing on the clock.

But, after a Bloomsburg timeout, the Huskies rattled off four-straight before Maddie Day scored with two minutes left, bringing the score to 14-7. The Huskies ended the half with the final goal, going into the break leading 15-7.

The Huskies put the game away to start the second half, however, scoring the first six goals of the second stanza. Lashay Ross and Taylor Lambeth scored back-to-back goals for the Wildcats, but it was too little too late as the Huskies answered with the final three goals.

Lashay Ross led the Wildcats with four goals and two assists for six points, adding three draws and two caused turnovers as well. Maddie Day and Taylor Lambeth each scored two goals while Brooke Siebert led the way with six ground balls, five caused turnovers, and four draws. Casey Johnson also had two caused turnovers in the contest.

The Wildcats head south for their next two games, as they travel to nationally ranked Rollins on Wednesday night. They will play under the lights, with the opening draw set for 7:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Men’s Lacrosse Races Out to Big Lead, But Hangs On Late for 12-11 Win at Barton

DATE: February 29, 2020

WILSON, N.C. - -The Wilmington University men’s lacrosse jumped out to a big lead but needed to hang on down the stretch for a 12-11 victory at Barton on Saturday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field.

It was a tale of two halves on Saturday, as the Wildcats (3-0) raced out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter, a 9-1 lead at the half, and as large as an 11-2 lead halfway through the third quarter. But a furious finish by Barton (0-5) nearly upset the Wildcats, as the Bulldogs scored the final three goals of the third, and then won the fourth quarter, 6-1. But the Wildcats goal with 8:33 left in the fourth proved to be the game deciding goal, as the Bulldogs scored the final five goals, but couldn’t find the game-tying mark.

Nine first quarter turnovers by Barton allowed the Wildcats to have more time of possession, leading to a 12-5 advantage in shots. Logan Stinson scored twice while Giovanni Marino added a goal and an assist. Jared Wagenhoffer made it a 4-0 lead with his goal with 4:22 left.
