SUBJECT: Blue Hens’ Valiant Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short at Maryland, 73-67

DATE: November 6, 2018

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Delaware cut a 22-point deficit to three late in the game but could not complete the comeback as the Blue Hens dropped a 73-67 decision to Big Ten opponent Maryland in their season opener Tuesday night at the XFINITY Center.

Delaware trailed 58-36 with 14:26 remaining but answered by scoring 12 straight points, pulling within 58-48 on a three-pointer by Jacob Cushing with 9:23 to play. A fastbreak layup by Darian Bryant made it a five-point game at the 5:45 mark, and after the Terps pushed the margin back to eight, Eric Carter scored inside and Cushing drained a triple to pull UD within 70-67 with 1:27 to play.

However Anthony Cowan hit one free throw for Maryland, and after Kevin Anderson’s driving layup attempt was blocked, Cowan added two more from the line with 13 seconds left to put the game away.

Carter finished with a career-high 29 points for the Blue Hens, going 12 of 14 from the field and hitting the first three-pointer of his career. Ithiel Horton added 10 points off the bench, including a monster dunk in transition in the opening half, while Cushing drained three shots from behind the arc to finish with nine points.

Jalen Smith paced Maryland with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Bruno Fernando and Cowan added 15 points apiece.

Delaware hung tough early on with the Terrapins, as a Collin Goss tip-in gave the Blue Hens a 20-19 lead midway through the period. It was still just a three-point Maryland advantage at 29-26 following a Carter free throw with 4:33 on the clock, but the Terps closed the half with a 15-1 run to take a 44-27 cushion into the break.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“To play this way on a big stage gives us a real boost of confidence. We aren’t into moral victories but to make it a one-possession game after being down 22 speaks highly of our group. The zone was good to us in the second half and we got into a better flow offensively. We really rode Eric Carter, and Jacob Cushing gave us a huge boost off the bench. I’m very pleased with how we played offensively, trying to mix and match lineup combinations without Ryan Allen. I feel like we got better as a basketball team tonight.”

Game Notes:

Carter also led the Blue Hens with nine rebounds

Both Delaware (6-23) and Maryland (2-19) struggled from three-point range

Delaware fell to 0-10 all-time vs. Big Ten schools

The Blue Hens dropped their season opener for the first time in four years

Maryland is receiving votes in both Top 25 polls and was picked seventh in Big Ten Preseason Poll

Horton, Goss, Ryan Johnson and Matt Veretto all made their UD debuts

Wed, November 07, 2018
Philadelphia, PA. (Nov. 6) --- The Lady Hornets fall to Temple 75-61, in Dave Caputo’s first game as DSU’s head coach.

Temple opened the game with a 9-0 run. After a timeout by DSU, Senior Keke Barber scored five straight points, and sparked a 7-2 run to close the deficit to four. Temple was able to extend their lead back up to double digits, before Lanayjha Ashe hit a floater to cut the deficit to 22-14 before time expired in the first quarter.

The Owls scored on back to back possessions to open the second quarter, pushing their lead to 26-14 leading to a timeout by the Hornets. Senior NaJai Pollard converted on a three point play out of the timeout to stop the run. The Owls kept the Lady Hornets from making any major inroads during the quarter and DSU trailed 41-30 entering halftime.

NaJai Pollard drained a three-pointer to start the second half and cut the deficit back down to eight. DSU remained within arm’s reach, trailing 47-39 after another Pollard layup with 7:04 left in the third quarter. Pollard picked up her fourth foul and subbed out with 6:28 remaining. The Hornets would only muster up four points during her absence and trailed 66-43 heading into the final quarter.

The Lady Hornets outscored The Owls 18 to 9 during the fourth quarter. They used a 9-0 run to cut the deficit down to 13 points, but they would not get any closer.

“I liked how we battled” said Coach Caputo. You take away (the first run) of the game we’re down 9 (to) nothing, that run (and) the second half run you take that away, (and) we played pretty evenly with them, but again basketball is a 40- minute game. So, we got to learn to play a 40-minute game. They are learning who I am as a coach we’re going to play every possession with energy. We got to change the culture.”

Delaware State converted on 24-70 (34.3%) field goal attempts, 5-19 (26.3%) on three-point attempts, and 8-12 (66.7%) from the free throw line.

Temple made 28-68 (41.2%) field goals, 6-20 (30.0%) from three-point range, and 13-17 (76.5%) from the charity stripe.

Delaware State’s NaJai Pollard led the way with 19 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, two assists, and one block. She was also a +8 in plus-minus. Lanayjha Ashe added 14 points, and three rebounds. Genell Addison tallied 11 points, three assists, one steal, and one block.

Temple Owls had four players in double figure scoring, Mia Davis led the way with 21 points, and 12 rebounds.

Up next for the Lady Hornets is their home opener on Nov. 13th vs James Madison. Tip-off starts at 7:00 pm.

DATE: November 9, 2018

NEWARK, Del. - - The 19th ranked and reigning NCAA East Region Tournament Champion Stonehill College was too much for the Wilmington University women’s basketball team in the 2018-19 season opener, falling 92-39, in the second game of the Tip-Off Classic on Friday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

SUBJECT: Anderson Carries Blue Hens in Overtime as Delaware Edges Saint Peter’s, 78-75

DATE: November 10, 2018

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Saint Peter’s rallied from a 16-point deficit to force overtime but Blue Hen guard Kevin Anderson scored all but two of UD’s points in the extra session as Delaware pulled out a 78-75 victory Saturday night at the Yanitelli Center.

The Blue Hens (1-1) led 57-41 following a Jacob Cushing three-pointer at the 9:33 mark, but the Peacocks (1-1) rallied back and finally pulled even at 66-66 on a Davauhnte Turner free throw with 3.5 seconds to play. Anderson’s last second desperation three-pointer was off the mark, forcing the extra session.

Anderson then scored the first four points of overtime, and the Blue Hens never trailed in the extra period. Anderson scored UD’s first seven overtime points, before two free throws by Eric Carter made it a 77-73 game with 17 seconds left. After a Peacocks layup, Anderson hit one of two from the stripe to put the Blue Hens up three.

UD then fouled intentionally, and Saint Peter’s guard KC Ndefo missed both free throws to seal the Blue Hen victory.

Anderson finished with a career-high 25 points, including a 9 of 11 effort from the foul line, and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Blue Hens. Carter added 18 points and eight boards, while Matt Veretto contributed 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Turner led Saint Peter’s with 23 points and seven rebounds on the night.

The teams were knotted at 21-21 with eight minutes left in the first half, but Delaware exploded with a 13-0 run to take control. A fast break layup by Veretto made it a nine-point game and forced a Peacocks timeout, before Carter and Anderson each added two free throws to close the spurt.

Saint Peter’s pulled within seven late in the period, but Veretto answered with a jumper and Carter drained a free throw to give the Blue Hens a 39-29 halftime lead.

UD went up as many as 16 points in the second half, before Saint Peter’s answered with an 11-0 and drew even in the final seconds of regulation.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“This win shows a lot of resiliency from our group. We’ve got a lot to learn from this game as well, we’ve got to do a better job of taking care of the basketball. Kevin Anderson did a great job in overtime, getting into a rhythm and scoring it for us, and Matt Veretto gave us a great effort off the bench. For this younger team obviously playing without Ryan Allen, it’s great for us to be able to go on the road in a tough environment and come out of there with the win. It says a lot about our character to come out in overtime and really focus on both ends of the floor.”

Game Notes:

• Anderson’s previous career-high was a 23-point effort vs. Notre Dame last year

• Collin Goss finished with nine points, all in the first half on three 3-pointers

• The Blue Hens guarded the three-point line well for the second straight game, holding the Peacocks to 7 of 24 shooting from behind the arc

• Delaware has won its last five overtime games, including all four during Ingelsby’s tenure

• The game was the first ever meeting between Delaware and Saint Peter’s

• UD has opened the season with two straight road games for the fourth time in five years

SUBJECT: Second Half Comeback Leads Men’s Basketball Past UDC, 86-82, for First Win of 2018-19

DATE: November 10, 2018

SPARKILL, N.Y. - - Trailing by 14 points with nine minutes to play in the second half, the Wilmington University men’s basketball team picked up its first win of the 2018-19, fighting back to defeat the District of Columbia, 86-82, on Sunday on the campus of St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Firebirds (0-2) hit a jumper to go up 56-42 with 13:49 left in regulation and matched their largest lead of the game, 68-54, with 9:07 to play. But that is when the Wildcats started to put it together.

Dawson Grinnage started what would be a game deciding 19-0 run over a span of 6:39 in game-time. Danny Walsh finished off a steal and fast break before Denzil Haynes converted an old-fashioned three-point play to bring the Wildcats to within 68-60 with 6:54 to play.

Jermaine Head brought the Wildcats to within a pair with two free throws before Haynes gave the Wildcats the lead with layup underneath the basket, 69-68, with 4:00 showing on the clock. Jermaine Head followed with a steal and fastbreak layup for the 71-68 advantage and finished off the 19-0 run with two free throws for the 73-68 lead with 2:30 to play.

The Firebirds finally ended the drought with a jumper with 2:16 to play, but Jordan Harding answered with a three-pointer for the Wildcats, widening the lead out to 76-70.

The Firebirds closed to within 78-75 but Danny Walsh finished off a fastbreak layup while being fouled, beating the full court press and putting the game out of reach.

The Firebirds took their first double-digit lead halfway through the first half, 24-14, and had as large as 13 points as late as 1:52 to play, 42-29. That would be the score at the half as well, as neither team found the bottom of the net in the final two minutes.

All five starters finished in double digits for the Wildcats, lead by Jermaine Head’s 22 points. Twelve of his 22 points came from the foul line, shooting 12-for-18 from the stripe. Dawson Grinnage nearly collected a double-double with 15 points and a team high nine rebounds, as did Denzil Haynes with 12 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Norwood and Danny Walsh finished with 13 points each while Tyler Norwood led the way with four steals.

The defense forced 23 turnovers and collected 12 steals, leading to 25 points at the other end of the floor. The Wildcats went 30-for-45 from the foul line as well.

That run ended when senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) hit a 3-pointer that danced around the rim and finally dropped for a one-possession contest.

GBC then forced a turnover when sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) tied up Caraballo, forcing a held ball with the visitors owning the possession arrow. The Lightning had a great look to tie, but freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) saw his three-point attempt miss the mark.

Louis Griffith knocked down two free throws for STAC with 8.4 seconds left for a 76-71 contest.

Taite ended with 19 points and now has 1,296 for his career, moving into third place in program history. He shot 9-for-9 from the line to go with amassing three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Dixon poured in 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting with eight rebounds and Livingston added 14 points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for Goldey-Beacom (0-3), which shot 43 percent (26-of-60) from the floor.

Caraballo poured in 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting with Sekou Cisse netting 18 off the bench for the Spartans (3-0), who entered ranked fifth in the latest D2SIDA East Region Poll.

SUBJECT: Wildcats Can’t Recover from Slow Start, 70-40, at NCAA DI Delaware in Historic Exhibition

DATE: November 18, 2018
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - An off shooting afternoon derailed the Wilmington University men’s basketball team on Sunday, 70-40, playing against the NCAA Division I and in-state foe University of Delaware in an exhibition game at the Bob Carpenter Center.

It was the first time the two Universities in the First State met on the basketball court.

The Wildcats struggled to get going in the early part of the game, not scoring until 16:02 showing on the clock, missing their first four jumpers. The Wildcats shot 26.6 percent from the floor for the game, hitting just 2-of-25 from beyond the three-point arc. Delaware shot 48.2 percent from the floor for the game.

An 11-0 Blue Hen (4-1) run put the home team up 22-6 with 9:41 left in the first half. A Tyler Norwood jumper followed by a Dawson Grinnage three-pointer cut the deficit to 24-13, but following the under eight media timeout, the Blue Hens rattled off 10 straight to reopen a 34-13 lead. The Blue Hens led 43-20 at the halftime break.

A Denzil Haynes layup brought the Wildcats to within 18 points, 44-26, early in the second half, but the Blue Hens ran off another 15 consecutive points out of a media time out, putting the game away 59-26 with 8:43 left in regulation.

Dawson Grinnage (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) led the Wildcats with 10 points and eight rebounds, hitting the only two three-pointers for the Wildcats on Sunday. Fellow Delawarean Danny Walsh (Bear, Del./William Penn) finished with eight points, shooting 4-for-9 from the floor.

The Blue Hens were led by Ithiel Horton’s 14 points off the bench while Eric Carter finished with 12 points. Kevin Anderson added 10 points and seven rebounds for the home team.

The Wildcats return to regular season action on Tuesday as they head to Shippensburg for a nonconference contest. The opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Uses Big First Half to Easily Defeat Wilmington University, 70-40

DATE: November 18, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware jumped out to a 23-point halftime lead and used a strong defensive effort throughout the game as the Blue Hens cruised to a 70-40 victory over Division II neighbor Wilmington University Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens, who won their fourth straight game, did not trail while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and holding the Wildcats to a 26.6 percent effort.

Freshman Ithiel Horton led Delaware with a game-high 14 points, Eric Carter added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Kevin Anderson contributed 10 points and seven boards. Dawson Grinnage paced Wilmington with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Blue Hens scored the first eight points of the game, and pushed the margin to 22-6 midway through the period on a pair of Jacob Cushing free throws. Darian Bryant then beat the first half buzzer with a fastbreak layup to give Delaware a 43-20 advantage at the break.

UD led 44-26 with 14 minutes to play after both teams started the second half cold from the floor, but the Blue Hens scored the next 15 points over a five-minute stretch to put the game away.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“Today was a great opportunity for basketball in the state of Delaware. This gives us momentum heading into a big weekend. To take care of business, going 4-1 with two wins on the road, gives us confidence heading into Friday night. I’ve been happy with our defensive effort; we’ve done a really good job guarding teams and staying true to our principles on the defensive end. We’ve been sloppy with the basketball, which is an area that’s always been a key for me. We’ve got to be better at valuing the basketball as our competition level increases.”

Game Notes:

• Delaware has won four straight games for the first time since December, 2017

• The Blue Hens are 4-1 for the first time since 2003-04

• UD allowed its fewest points since a 66-34 win over Howard on Nov. 19, 2010

• Horton has reached double figures in four of his first five games

• Delaware has not trailed in each of its last three contests

Danny Walsh would hit one of his four made three-pointers to give WilmU a 22-20 advantage with 7:57 left in the first half, but the Raiders would go on an eight-point run to give them a 28-24 lead. The Wildcats did not score for 3:12, allowing Shippensburg to take the lead, but Wilmington stayed right with them, taking back the lead 33-30 with just two minutes left. With seven seconds left, Wilmington had a one point lead, 36-35 before Shippensburg’s Jake Biss was able to knock down a trey ball as the buzzer sounded to give the Raiders a 38-36 lead into halftime.

Dawson Grinnage was able to find Danny Walsh for the layup to tie the game at 38 apiece just 29 seconds into the second half. Shippensburg would then go on a 9-0 run, taking advantage of the Wildcats missed opportunities and take a 47-38 lead. The Wildcats were able to cut the lead down to five to make it a 47-42 game, but the Raiders continued to extend their lead to 10. LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - - A big fourth quarter allowed Lock Haven to slip past the Wilmington University women’s basketball team, 81-73, on Tuesday night inside Thomas Fieldhouse.

With the game at a one-point difference heading into the final quarter, 55-54, Lock Haven (3-1) grabbed momentum and outscored the Wildcats (0-6), 26-19, in the fourth quarter to pull away with the nonconference victory.

Jadyn Whitsitt led the Wildcats with 21 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-11 from the foul line. She also grabbed seven rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass. Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Nearly Comes Back in 80-79 Overtime Loss at the District of Columbia

Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) moved into second place on the College’s career scoring list, but Goldey-Beacom’s improbable comeback fell painfully short in an 80-79 overtime loss at the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.

The first half belonged to sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ), who scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting to help the Lightning hit 50 percent (14-of-28) from the floor. Despite all of that, the Firebirds still held a 36-35 lead at the break.

The Lightning owned a 56-45 cushion with 10:38 to go, but the Firebirds made a stunning comeback and took the lead at 67-65 on Juanye Colon’s jumper with 2:25 remaining. Sophomore Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) made two free throws with 2:11 left, bringing GBC to a 67-67 tie. Following a series of empty possessions, Zachary Olukanni drilled a jumper with 1:05 remaining to give UDC a 69-67 lead.

Taite once again took control of the Lightning’s offense and his aggressiveness resulted in a Firebirds’ foul with 36 seconds left. He calmly nailed both free throws for a 69-69 tie.

GBC then had a solid chance for the lead with freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) stealing a bad pass, but he missed a breakaway layup and the ball went back to UDC. The Firebirds looked for the win, but Quadire Truesdale could not hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Lightning were in an 80-74 hole with 31 seconds left in the extra session when they got a huge break. Truesdale committed a foul 40 feet from the basket and then was whistled for a technical foul. Taite made both of the technical shots and senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) hit 1-of-2 on the common foul for an 80-77 contest.

UDC again kept GBC in the contest when Kirkwood missed two free throws with 28 seconds to play. Following a timeout, the Lightning went for the quick deuce as senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) hit a layup with 15 seconds to go for an 80-79 contest.

The Firebirds then could not get the ball over the timeline as Truesdale dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds with 7.3 seconds to go, amazingly giving the Lightning a chance to win.

GBC called timeout to set up a play, but could not get off a shot. Taite fell down as he was dribbling and by the time he got up, no one for the visitors was open and the time dripped to zero.

Taite, the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, scored 16 points and moved into second place with 1,335 career points. The top spot is held by Sam McDuffie, who scored 1,413 points from 2007-11.

Livingston scored 17 points, with Stancil and Johnson adding 11 apiece for GBC (1-4), which shot 47 percent (29-of-62) from the floor.

Kevin Cox had 24 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, Kirkwood netted 14 points, Colon scored 13 and Olukanni added 11 for the Firebirds (3-2).

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday heads to Garden City, NY to face Adelphi for a 7:30 pm contest.

SUBJECT: Blue Hens Edge Louisiana Tech for Impressive 75-71 Victory Over Bulldogs

DATE: November 26, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – Four Blue Hens scored in double figures in a solid all-around effort as Delaware recorded an impressive 75-71 victory over Louisiana Tech Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Eric Carter posted game-highs of 23 points and eight rebounds for Delaware (5-2), while Ithiel Horton tied his season-best of 18 points for the second straight game. Darian Bryant contributed 12 points on the night, while Kevin Anderson chipped in 11 and Matt Veretto added eight. Delaware shot 55.3 percent from the field and knocked down 16 of 21 free throws during the win.

Coliver Powell paced Louisiana Tech (4-3) with 14 points and five rebounds, while Amorie Archibald had 13 points and Derric Jean scored 12 for the Bulldogs. Louisiana Tech also shot 55.3 percent from the floor and hit all 11 free throw attempts.

The game was close all night, as neither team led more than seven points. The teams were knotted at 61-61 with five minutes to play, but Bryant scored inside before Carter converted a three-point play to put Delaware up five with 4:23 on the clock. The Blue Hens were still up four at 72-68 in the final minute when Carter hit one free throw and Horton added a pair from the line to put the game away.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“Our freshman have been really good for us, and I thought starting them gives us the most potent group to start the game and takes a little pressure off Eric Carter and Kevin Anderson. I thought our zone really neutralized their athleticism and allowed us to get out in transition. We had four guys in double figures and really good balance on the offensive end. That’s a heck of a win for our basketball team.”

Eric Carter

“It’s great to get the win tonight, and we need to keep it going this weekend. We have an unselfish, solid group that’s playing well right now.”

Darian Bryant

“Tonight was a great all-around effort. They’re a good team and to be able to get a win in front of our fans is a real confidence booster.”

Game Notes:

• Carter has reached double figures in all seven games this season

• Horton has scored in double digits in five straight contests

• Horton and Veretto made their first career starts for Delaware

• Blue Hen starters scored 72 of UD’s 75 points on the night

• Both teams shot 26 of 47 from the field

• Louisiana Tech entered the game with a +9.3 rebounding edge but won the board battle by just one, 23-22

• The Blue Hens are 5-2 for the first time since 2010-11

• The game was the final contest of the Delaware Invitational

SUBJECT: Wildcats Hold Off Millersville in Another Close Nonconference Matchup, 77-71

DATE: November 27, 2018
MKR

NEWARK, Del. – In another close nonconference matchup with PSAC challenger Millersville, the Wilmington University men’s basketball team came out on top, 77-71, at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday night.

It was the Wildcats’ third straight victory over the Marauders, with all three games being played within six points.

The Wildcats (3-3) shots were on tonight, as they shot 49 percent from the floor throughout both halves, compared to Millersville’s (3-3) 44 percent field goal percentage.

Danny Walsh got the Wildcats on the board first, making back-to-back three-pointers out of the gate. Wilmington jumped out to a ten-point lead with 13:16 left in the half making it an 18-8 game, before forcing Millersville into their first timeout of the game. Wilmington had its largest lead of the night of 15 with 10:26 left in the half, before the Marauders hit two back-to-back threes to come within nine. Jermaine Head’s layup would give the Wildcats two more points, but Millersville answered with a 9-0 run to make it a 30-27 game with 4:42 left in the first half.

A Jordan Harding layup would put Wilmington up three with 2:45 to play, but Millersville was able to answer with a three from Amadou Kaba to tie the game with 1:24 left. The Marauders were able to get one more shot to go in to go up, 38-36, and take the two-point lead into halftime.

Just 14 seconds into the second half, Tyler Norwood put the Wildcats back in front, 39-38, but the Marauders answered again with a 5-0 run to go up, 43-39. Wilmington would get within one, 46-45, but could not connect on another shot for 2:16, still trailing, 50-47. Millersville would jump out, 56-51, for their largest lead of the game, but a trey ball from Jordan Harding and a made layup from Walsh would tie the game at 56 apiece.

It was back and forth action until the Wildcats re-took the lead, 68-64 with 2:36 left to play. Jermaine Head and Danny Walsh would hit back-to-back three-pointers to give WilmU a 71-67 lead with 1:08 to play, before forcing a Millersville timeout. The Marauders were able to come within two again, but a Denzil Haynes dunk and made free throws from Danny Walsh would seal the victory, 77-71.

Freshman Tyler Norwood had a career-high 23 points, going 10-16 from the floor, while dishing out five assists. Danny Walsh recorded 14 points, going 2-4 from deep, as Denzil Haynes secured his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Jermaine Head added seven assists and nine points, as Dawson Grinnage controlled the glass with 12 boards, while adding eight points.

Despite only shooting 50 percent from the foul line to the Marauders’ 63 percent, Wilmington was able to combat that by scoring 17 points off of their opponents’ 16 turnovers.

The Wildcats will start CACC play when they host the top team in the South, Jefferson next Tuesday night in a double-header with the women. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Stays Hot With 65-54 Win Over Lincoln (PA)

In a game highlighted by defense, Goldey-Beacom scored 22 first-quarter points and the teams played almost even the rest of the way in the home side’s 65-54 victory over Lincoln at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning blitzed to a 22-10 lead at quarter time, showing a strong offense that has helped them average almost 17 points in the opening quarter this season. GBC forced Lincoln into 12 turnovers and eight fouls in the period with the visitors only attempting 10 shots.

Junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) and freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) scored eight points apiece in the quarter for the Lightning, who ended the stanza on a 20-5 run.

Goldey-Beacom (4-2) held Lincoln to only 38 percent shooting (21-of-56) for the contest, just off the team’s season-best defense of 34 percent last Tuesday at Millersville. The Lions were forced into 29 turnovers, the fourth time the Lightning’s opponents have committed at least 20, and only shot 3-of-17 from three-point range.

There was some offense played in the game as McGrogan, named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll, closed with 22 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season to go with shooting 12-for-14 from the line.

Round again was a major factor with 13 points, giving her double figures in five of the team’s six contests. Senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) hauled in 11 rebounds and freshman Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) added eight.

The Wildcats (0-7) got off to a fast start against the Lions (4-1), jumping out to a 19-16 lead after the first quarter and taking their largest lead of the game, 23-16, with 8:12 left in the second quarter before the Lions battled back.

From the point of the 27-22 lead, the Lions would go on to outscore the Wildcats, 20-3, the rest of the quarter and take a 42-30 lead into the halftime break.

Back-to-back buckets early in the third brought the Wildcats to within nine points, and Macy Robinson had them to within nine once more, 46-37, with a layup with 6:49 left in the third. But the Lions went on a 12-0 run to close out the final 3:21 of the third quarter, widening their lead out to 61-39.

A Durrett three-pointer had the game at 14-points once again, 70-56, with 3:01 remaining, but that would be as close as the Wildcats could get in the fourth quarter. The Lions finished the game off with an 11-1 run down the stretch.
