SUBJECT: Blue Hens’ Win Streak Snapped With 80-65 Home Loss to Navy

DATE: December 5, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – Navy used a strong second half shooting percentage and a commanding rebounding margin to record an 80-65 victory over Delaware Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Midshipmen (3-5) went 15 of 27 from the field in the second half, including 5 of 7 from three-point range, to pull away from the Blue Hens. Navy also enjoyed a 45-32 edge on the boards including 22 offensive rebounds, 18 of which came in the first half. Cam Davis and George Kiernan each scored 13 points in a balanced effort for the Mids, while Hasan Abdullah and Danny Ogele added 12 apiece.

Delaware (7-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped, shot 49.0 percent from the field but went just 6 of 15 from the foul line. Freshman Ithiel Horton, the current CAA Rookie of the Week, again led the way for the Blue Hens by pouring in a season-high 22 points. Eric Carter contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kevin Anderson added nine points and five assists. Matt Veretto tied Carter for the team lead with eight boards, to go with five points on the night.

Navy took a 33-26 lead into the half, but Delaware quickly scored the first seven points of the second period to pull even with 17:29 remaining. Although the Blue Hens could never regain the lead, a Horton three-pointer brought UD within a point at 53-52 at the 10:23 mark.

Delaware was within 67-61 following a dunk by Carter with three and a half minutes to play, but the Midshipmen scored the next seven points to pull away.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“We held Navy to 33 percent in the first half but gave up 18 offensive rebounds, and that’s not good enough. We got a little fatigued in the second half, and then they got confident and made some shots. We just didn’t do enough on that end of the floor while we weren’t able to have much success offensively. We just didn’t have the spirit and the energy we’ve had the last week or so, and that’s on me. I have to do a better job of getting our guys ready to play, and we need everybody to be ready to go and give us something. We were searching tonight, but just didn’t find the right combination to click.”

Ithiel Horton

“We need to stay humble. We were on a winning streak and thought we would roll over them, but they came in here and whipped us. It’s really frustrating, we just couldn’t get a stop in the second half. We weren’t together tonight, and they were.”

Game Notes:

• Carter has reached double figures in all 10 games this year

• Carter surpassed the 600-rebounds mark for his career

• Horton scored in double digits for the eighth game in a row

• Darian Bryant eclipsed the 500-points plateau

• Delaware committed 15 turnovers while Navy committed only five

• The Mids improved to 24-8 all-time vs. UD and defeated the Blue Hens for the second straight year

Thu, December 06, 2018
Dover, Del. (Dec. 5) --- Delaware State (2-4) dismantles Cheyney (0-7) 79-59, in their final non-conference home game of the season. NaJai Pollard turned in another strong effort at both ends of the floor, and the Lady Hornets responded well after their loss to St. John’s last week.

Pollard led the Lady Hornets with 32 points, 16 rebounds, seven blocks (tied for single game record), and three steals.

Lanayjha Ashe added 19 points (eight in the fourth quarter), eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Keke Barber tallied 15 points, two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

DSU jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, highlighted by a three-pointer from Keke Barber.

Cheyney momentarily were able to get their footing and trailed just 10-5, with 3:56 left in the first quarter. The Lady Hornets closed the quarter on a 10-3 run taking a 20-8 lead into the second quarter.

Cheyney cut the deficit down to just three points, midway through the second quarter. The Lady Hornets again responded with a furious 14-4 run capped off by a buzzer beating three from Keke Barber, to give DSU a 38-25 lead entering the halftime break.

DSU scored 16 of their 20 points in the paint during the third quarter, to run away with the game. The Lady Hornets pushed the pace and attacked the basket to end the game with 56 points in the paint (season high).

“You see at times we’ll push the ball with pace and get good quality shots.” Head coach Caputo said. “One glaring (stat) to me was we were 2-of-20 (on three-point field goal attempts) I told my team we got to score in the paint tonight, they did a good job of that.”

Delaware State extended their lead to 26 points, their largest lead of the game, after Lanayjha Ashe split through multiple defenders for a layup off the glass, with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter.

SUBJECT: Goldey-Beacom Takes CACC Women’s Basketball Contest from Wilmington, 76-54

DATE: December 9, 2018
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Nothing was falling for the Wilmington University women’s basketball team as it dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest to Goldey-Beacom, 76-54, on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (0-8, 0-2 CACC) shot 32.3 percent from the floor for the game, including a 3-for-13 mark from beyond the three-point arc. They also had trouble from the foul line, shooting 11-of-23 from the charity stripe. The Lightning (5-5, 1-1 CACC) hit seven three-pointers and made all 13 of their foul shots in the victory.

It was tough sledding out of the gate for the Wildcats, shooting just 3-for-12 from the floor in the first quarter. They got to the line 12 times in the frame, but went just 5-of-12 from the stripe, falling behind 20-13 after the opening 10 minutes.

Macy Robinson put in the first layup of the second quarter to bring the Wildcats to 20-15, but the Lightning rattled off the next 10 points to regain control, 30-15. The visitors took their largest lead of the quarter, 39-20, before Jadyn Whitsitt scored the final bucket of the half to cut the deficit to 41-25. The Lightning won the second quarter, 21-12.

Whitistt made a layup with 6:02 left in the third quarter to bring the Wildcats within 49-33, but an 11-0 spark gave the Lightning a 60-33 lead with 1:25 left in the quarter. The Lightning held their largest lead of the game late in the quarter, 68-36, carrying them to a CACC victory.

Kiara Eubanks scored six of her nine points in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats won the frame, 18-8, but it was too little too late as the Lightning won, 76-54.

Whitsitt, Jaelyn Durrett, and Nyree Grant led the Wildcats with 10 points each, while Whitsitt and Grant finished with six rebounds each. Eubanks scored nine with four rebounds, two assists, and three steals while Robinson added eight points, seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists.

The Wildcats have 11 days off before they return to game action, when they head to Holy Family for another CACC tilt on December 19. The opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m. in Philadelphia.

Corey Taite Inches Closer to the Men’s Basketball Scoring Record in Goldey-Beacom’s 97-63 Victory at Wilmington (DE)

Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) moved within striking distance of becoming Goldey-Beacom’s career scoring leader, exploding in the second half in his squad’s 97-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Wilmington (DE) in Newark, DE.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half grabbed a 43-36 lead, shooting 52 percent (6-of-31) from the floor with nine 3-pointers. Sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) scored 10 points in the half with senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) and freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) adding nine apiece.

The Lightning then took control by scoring 13 straight points to open a 70-49 lead with 12:03 remaining. Taite, who was bottled up for two points in the opening half, broke out with nine points in the burst.

Taite in the second half poured in 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting, helping the Lightning outscore the Wildcats 54-27. GBC shot 55 percent (17-of-31) from the floor in the half and limited Wilmington to just 26 percent (10-of-38).

Taite and Stancil overall scored 20 points apiece, Livingston netted 14, senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) poured in 13 and Jones added 12 for GBC (3-5, 2-0 CACC), which shot 53 percent (33-of-62) from the field and canned 16 three-pointers.

Now with 1,404 career points, Taite is just nine shy of tying Sam McDuffie (2007-11) as the school’s career scoring leader.

Tyler Norwood and Danny Walsh netted 15 points apiece with Ed Henderson adding 10 for the Wildcats (4-4, 1-1), who shot 34 percent (22-of-65) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday steps out of conference to visit New Haven for a 7:00 pm contest.

SUBJECT: Carter Scores 33, Blue Hens Hold Off Saint Francis For Impressive 88-83 Victory

DATE: December 5, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – Eric Carter scored a career-high 33 points and the Blue Hens held off Saint Francis down the stretch as Delaware recorded an impressive 88-83 victory over the Red Flash Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Carter finished 12 of 14 from the field, grabbed 12 rebounds to post his fourth double-double of the year, and dished out a team-high five assists to pace the Blue Hens (8-3), who shot 57.6 percent from the field. Ithiel Horton reached double figures for the ninth consecutive game with 15 points, Kevin Anderson added 14 points, and Darian Bryant contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.

Jamaal King paced Saint Francis (3-6) with season-highs 26 points and eight assists while not committing a turnover, and Keith Braxton added 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists. The Red Flash shot 50.0 percent from the field and knocked down 14 three-pointers on the afternoon.

Delaware shot 60.0 percent during the opening 20 minutes to take a 43-39 lead into the break, but Saint Francis opened the second half with a 10-3 run and still led by three at 66-63 with 9:38 to play. However Carter scored five straight points before Matt Veretto added a three-pointer during an eight-point UD spurt that put the Blue Hens in front for good.

The Red Flash closed within two points on four occasions, the final time at 85-83 following two Braxton free throws with 43 seconds remaining. However Anderson drove down the lane for a layup with 13 seconds left, and after Braxton missed a three-point attempt, Horton hit a free throw to seal the victory.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“I think we have a group that can really score, we’re not in the 60s and 70s as much as we used to be. We were really efficient on the offensive end, and I’m really proud of how we handled the basketball. To see us only have five turnovers against a good team, that’s progress for us. I can’t say enough about Eric Carter. I’m really proud of how he’s led our group. He’s got a really strong voice and our guys look up to him. He’s playing like the best big guy in the league right now.”

Eric Carter

“Saint Francis is a great team but if we play like this, talk and execute, I have faith in my teammates that we can beat a lot of teams. Our guards did a great job of taking care of the ball, which was a point of emphasis for us. We got stops late in the game, and that’s what matters.”

Kevin Anderson

“Overall everybody played great; our freshmen made shots and Eric (Carter) was amazing. I think he’s the best big man in our conference. We had some adversity this week, but we can’t let other teams beat us in our building.”

Game Notes:

• Carter’s 33 points are the most by a Blue Hen since Kory Holden also scored 33 at Towson on Jan. 30, 2016

• Carter has recorded double-doubles in three of the last four games

• Carter is now tied for 14th place in UD history with 613 career rebounds

• Both teams committed just five turnovers

• Delaware held a 46-24 points in the paint advantage

• The Blue Hens posted their highest shooting percentage since shooting 58.6% vs. UNCW on Jan. 7

Corey Taite Becomes Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball’s Scoring Leader, Leading Team to an 81-69 Win at New Haven

Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) became the program’s career scoring leader and Goldey-Beacom had little trouble in notching its third straight victory, 81-69 at New Haven in West Haven, CT.

The inevitable occurred for Taite when he hit a free throw with 5:55 left in the first half, topping the mark of 1,413 points established by Sam McDuffie from 2007-11. The reigning CACC Player of the Year and first team All-East Region pick also is in the top three in school history for assists, free throws, steals, 3-pointers and field goals.

The team was the story in the opening half as the Lightning rolled to a 41-20 halftime lead, canning eight 3-pointers and shooting 52 percent (14-of-27) from the floor. Taite scored 10 points in that span, Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) continued his torrid play with nine points and fellow sophomore Tevin Service (Union, NJ) added seven.

The Lightning’s defense again was on display in the first half, holding the Chargers to a mere 33 percent shooting (7-of-21) from the field and forcing them into 13 turnovers.

New Haven in the second half made things interesting with an early 20-5 run, shooting 7-of-8 from the floor in that stretch to close to 48-40 with 13:20 remaining. Elijah Bailey scored seven points in that time with Derrick Rowland adding six.

But the Lightning, winners in four of their last six outings, truly were never threatened. They shook off that spurt with an 18-9 run over the next five minutes to gain a 66-49 cushion with 8:04 to play. Taite and junior Dwayne Dixon (Newark, NJ) scored six points apiece for GBC (4-5), which shot 6-of-9 from the floor in that time with four 3-pointers.

Taite finished with 24 points, five assists and four 3-pointers over a game-high 38 minutes and now stands at 1,428 points. Dixon amassed 17 points and six rebounds with Service netting 11 points for the Lightning, who have won all four meetings with the Chargers.

Goldey-Beacom’s defense again deserves applause by forcing 20 turnovers, marking the eighth time this season its opponents have reached at least that total.

Bailey should not be blamed for the loss, ending with 29 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four 3-pointers over 36 minutes for New Haven (5-4), which dropped its fourth straight contest. Rowland and Roy Kane Jr. poured in 11 points apiece.

Goldey-Beacom is home next Wednesday for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game against Jefferson at 8:00 pm. The women’s game between the same schools precedes it at 6:00 pm.

A 6-0 spurt game the Bears a 91-79 lead with 3:12 to play and the Wildcats could only get to within nine points the rest of way with 1:34 showing on the clock.

The Bears hit their final six free throws of the game to close out the contest, 100-86.

The Bears were led by Moe Williams and Anthony Lee who scored 26 points each while Williams secured a double-double with 20 rebounds in the game. Ricky Hicks scored 21 points as well for Kutztown. Williams scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the second half of the game.

SUBJECT: Stony Brook Uses Late Run To Edge Blue Hens, 74-68

DATE: December 16, 2018

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Delaware rallied from an 11-point second half deficit to take the lead late, but Stony Brook scored the final seven points of the game to pull out a 74-68 victory over the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon at Island Federal Arena.

Matt Veretto drained a three-pointer from the left wing with 1:25 remaining to put Delaware (8-4) in front 68-67, but the Seawolves (10-2) quickly answered with a Miles Latimore triple to go back up by two with a minute to play. Kevin Anderson’s driving layup was then blocked, while Jaron Cornish found Andrew Garcia for a layup at the other end to make it a four-point game with 24 seconds on the clock.

Ryan Allen and Anderson then each missed three-point attempts in the final seconds as Stony Brook sealed the victory.

Eric Carter again paced Delaware with 17 points and 11 rebounds, notching his fifth double-double of the season. Ithiel Horton reached double figures for the 10th straight game by also scoring 17 points while Allen, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, added 15 points in his first action of the season following foot surgery.

Veretto was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 12 points, while Anderson contributed seven points and a game-high six assists.

Akwasi Yeboah tied his season-high with 25 points for Stony Brook, including five three-pointers. Miles Latimer contributed 14 points, while Jaron Cornish and Elijah Olaniyi added 12 apiece.

Both teams knocked down 11 of 25 three-point attempts on the day, while the Seawolves held a 42-31 rebounding advantage.

The Seawolves used a 10-1 run late in the first half to break a 23-23 deadlock, and eventually took a 35-30 lead into the break. The margin grew to 11 six minutes into the second period but the Blue Hens erupted with an 11-0 run, including three triples by Allen, to pull even at 64-64 with 11:37 on the clock.

Delaware again battled back from a six-point deficit to tie the game at 65-65, and after a Seawolves bucket, Veretto drilled a three-pointer to put the Blue Hens on top before Stony Brook’s final decisive run.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“I’m happy with how we battled back. I thought we got into a good offensive flow in the second half and made some shots, we just need a few defensive stops to get out of here with a ‘W.’ This is a tough one for us, but that’s a good basketball team. It was great having Ryan Allen back, he played like he hadn’t missed any time. So that was a good shot in the arm for us, and we need to keep building off that with him.”

Game Notes:

• Carter has reached double figures in all 12 games this year

• Allen, who tied the UD single season record with 86 three-pointers a year ago, went 5 of 8 from behind the arc

• Stony Brook improved to 4-0 at home this season

• The game was the first ever meeting between the schools

• UD closes out its non-conference schedule at home against Delaware State on Wednesday

SUBJECT: Balanced Attack Leads Men’s Basketball to 93-83 CACC Victory at Holy Family

DATE: December 19, 2018
djl

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Using a combination of good shooting, ball movement, and limiting turnovers, the Wilmington University men’s basketball team defeated Holy Family, 93-83, on Wednesday night at the Campus Center Gym on the final night before the mandatory holiday break.

Dawson Grinnage was two points away from becoming the first player in program history to record a triple-double, scoring eight points while grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out 11 assists. As a team, the Wildcats assisted on 20 of the team’s 34 made field goals, while only turning the ball over six times on Wednesday night. The Wildcats shot 50.7 percent from the floor, hitting 12-of-26 from beyond the three-point arc.

The Wildcats (5-6, 2-1 CACC) jumped out of the gates to a 13-0 start and never looked back. The lead never changed hands in the contest and was only tied for the first 15 seconds of the game, 0-0, and for 15 seconds late in the first half, 34-34.

Jermaine Head, Danny Walsh, and Jordan Harding all hit three-pointers in leading the Wildcats to that 13-0 start, but the Tigers (5-5, 1-2 CACC) didn’t go so quietly, closing to within 15-12 halfway through the first half. The Tigers continued to keep it close in the first half, scoring six straight to get to within one point, 32-31, before eventually tying the game, 34-34, with 1:07 showing on the clock. But Ed Henderson hit a three-pointer to regain the lead for WilmU before Dawson Grinnage’s putback gave the Wildcats a 39-34 lead at the halftime buzzer.

Still leading by five points early in the second half, Tyler Norwood hit one of his six three-pointers before Grinnage had another tip-in putback to give the Wildcats a 51-41 lead with 15:10 left in regulation. Norwood came back and hit another three-pointer out a Holy Family timeout, and the Wildcats held a 13-point lead.

Norwood continued to hit the long ball, giving the Wildcats a 66-48 lead with 11:03 to play. A technical foul by the Tigers sparked a 7-0 run for the Wildcats, capped by a Thomas Farrior old-fashioned three-point, putting the Wildcats up 73-53. Farrior would give the Wildcats their largest lead of the game moments later with another layup, 75-54, with 8:31 left in regulation.

That 21-point lead held until the 6:55 mark before the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit. A three-pointer brought the Tigers to within nine, but it was too little too late as the game clock only showed 45 seconds to play. A Thomas Farrior steal and layup iced the game with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Tyler Norwood led the Wildcats with 24 points, going 6-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc. Jermaine Head scored 14 points to go with eight rebounds while Jordan Harding chipped in with 14 points as well. Danny Walsh was the fourth starter in double figures with 12 points, adding three assists.

Thomas Farrior came off the bench to score 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting in his Wildcat debut, adding 6-of-9 from the foul line. 14 of his points came in the second half on 5-of-6 shooting.

The Tigers shot just 5-of-31 from three-point land, shooting 44.3 percent from the floor overall. They were led by Kharon Randolph’s game high 27 point while Branden Aughburns added 22 points.

Tonight was the final game of the 2018 calendar year for the Wildcats, as they do not return to game action until Wednesday, January 2 at Georgian Court. Although a Wednesday game, it is a matinee start with a tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Makes It Four Straight with 85-73 Triumph Over Jefferson

Sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) went on a tear with 21 points and Goldey-Beacom stayed unbeaten in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with its fourth straight overall win, 85-73 over Jefferson at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom, which led by as many as 13 points in the opening half, only found itself with a 57-54 margin with 13:59 remaining. That was before the Lightning went on a 12-4 in just over five minutes to grab a 69-58 cushion with 8:31 to go. Livingston, who could not be stopped throughout the contest, continued his surge with six points in that run to help his squad shoot 4-of-5 from the floor.

The second half was a shooting clinic for the Lightning, who went off for 65 percent (17-of-26) from the floor with three 3-pointers to outscore the Rams 43-36. A big part of the game was the points in the paint and the second half told a big story with GBC owning a 26-12 advantage.

Livingston fell just short of his season-best 25 points scored in the opener November 10 at Bentley. Still, he had a monster contest by shooting 8-of-11 from the floor and canning five 3-pointers to tie his career best from February 13, 2018 at the University of the Sciences.

Junior Dwayne Dixon (Newark, NJ) had 16 points and a season-best 14 rebounds for his first double-double as a Lightning, Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) netted 16 points, fellow senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) netted 15 and senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) added 11 for the Lightning, who shot 56 percent (34-of-61) from the field.

GBC (5-5, 3-0 CACC) is off to its best league start since beginning the 2011-12 campaign 4-0.

Deondre Bourne netted 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, Alexander Gorton netted 17, DeVaughn Mallory poured in 14 and Josh Bradanese added 11 for the Rams (5-6, 1-2), who shot 53 percent (29-of-55) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom is off until December 30, when it is home against Merrimack at 2:30 pm. The women’s game against New Haven follows at 5:00 pm.

SUBJECT: Last Second Layup Gives Delaware State 73-71 Win Over Blue Hens

DATE: December 19, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware State guard Kevin Larkin scored on a putback layup with three seconds remaining as Delaware State pulled out a 73-71 win over Delaware Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Hornets (3-8) led by seven points with 2:14 remaining, but Delaware (8-5) rallied with a seven-point run to pull even. Ryan Allen made a steal and hit a layup to make it a five-point game, and after Matt Veretto converted a baseline layup, Ithiel Horton tied the game with a clutch three-pointer from the right wing with 18 seconds to play.

Following a time out Delaware State’s Pinky Wiley missed a three-pointer, but Larkin grabbed the rebound in the paint and scored a layup for the winning basket. Horton’s last second three-point attempt from 30 feet then hit off the back rim.

Eric Carter had another huge game to lead the Blue Hens, finishing with a game-high 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting and tying his career-high with 15 rebounds. Veretto contributed 13 points on the night, Anderson finished with 11 points and five assists, and Allen scored 10 points while making his first home appearance of the year.

Larkin scored 22 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds for Delaware State, while Saleik Edwards added 18 points.

The Hornets shot just 39.7 percent from the floor but knocked down 13 of 27 three-point attempts. Delaware, which entered the game ranked ninth nationally in three-point shooting, went just 6 of 30 from behind the arc.

Delaware State took a four-point lead into the half and did not trail in the second stanza. The Blue Hens pulled even at 53-53 on two Carter free throws, but the Hornets stretched their lead back to seven in the final minutes before UD’s late run.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“We’ve got to go back to the drawing board defensively, we’re not a very good defensive team right now. Give them all the credit in the world, they were fabulous. They made big shot after big shot. But on our home floor we’ve got to be better defensively, and dig in and get stops when we need to. We allowed them to get confident, and you can’t do that. We just didn’t have enough fight, enough toughness, enough focus, and we’ve got to be able to learn from this. There are a lot of games left, but this one stings.”

Eric Carter

“They wanted it more tonight and the score proves that, plain and simple. We’ve got to play a lot better; we’ve got a long way to go. We didn’t handle our business tonight, and we have to hold ourselves accountable after the break.”

Game Notes:

• Carter notched his sixth double-double of the year and has reached double figures in all 13 games

• Veretto scored in double figures for the sixth time while Anderson reached double digits for the ninth time

• The Blue Hens held a 36-20 edge in points in the paint

• Delaware State snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blue Hens

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – With a 21-7 second quarter, the Wilmington University women’s basketball team broke away from Holy Family to secure their first win of the season, 65-49, in their final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game before the holiday at the Campus Center Gym Wednesday night.

The Wildcats (1-9, 1-2 CACC) shot 47.3 percent from the floor for night to the Tigers’ (2-7, 0-3 CACC) 31.3 percent.

WilmU came out of the gate on a 7-0 run within the first two minutes of the game against the Tigers. Holy Family was able to come within one with 4:03 left in the first quarter, but back-to-back buckets from Jadyn Whitsitt would put the Wildcats back up, 16-10. Wilmington would score four more points to win the quarter, 20-14.

Macy Robinson would put the Wildcats up 27-19 with 7:14 to play in the second quarter as the Wildcats looked to extend their lead. The Wildcats wouldn’t score again until the 4:56 mark in the quarter on a free throw by Nyree Grant. But then WilmU was able to go on a 14-0 run until 50 seconds left in the quarter, when the Tigers would score for the first time in 4:06. Kiara Eubanks would end the quarter with a layup to give the Wildcats a 20-point lead into halftime, 41-21. WilmU shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the first half.

Robinson would knock down her second made three-pointer of the game to open up the second half for the Wildcats, before Jadyn Whitsitt gave Wilmington their biggest lead of the game, 50-26, with 4:20 to play in the third quarter. The Tigers tried keeping the score under 20, but the Wildcats continued to keep the 20-point lead, making it a 54-34 game going in to the final quarter.

WilmU came out slow in the fourth, not knocking down their first shot until 6:57, but were able to keep Holy Family to one shot during the same timeframe. The Tigers would decrease their deficit to 16 with 5:20 left to play, before coming within 13 with 3:11 in the game, forcing WilmU to call just their second timeout of the second half.

Wilmington would not score for 3:32, before Macy Robinson knocked down her third and final three of the night to put the Wildcats up 61-45 with 1:27 left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers would get two more jump shots, but the Wildcats would end the game by two made free-throws from Robinson to secure the victory, 65-49.

Wilmington was just 1-25 against the Tigers before the 2016-17 season. Tonight’s 16-point win for the Wildcats was their largest win against Holy Family since both teams met in 2004. They are 3-2 against the Tigers in their last five meetings.

Jadyn Whitsitt would score 16 of her total 18 points in the first half, going 6-7 from the floor, while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out four assists to lead the Wildcats. Macy Robinson would tie her career-high 15 rebounds in the game, while securing the double-double with 17 points. Kiara Eubanks came off the bench with 12 points going a perfect 6-6 from the floor. Nyree Grant added eight points, while going 4-6 from the free-throw line.

The Wildcats shot 50 percent from behind the arc, while Holy Family shot 14.8 percent for the night.

Wilmington will be back at it after the Holiday, when they travel to Hofstra University on Saturday December 29 for an exhibition matchup with the Pride. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. against the NCAA Division I foe.

Wed, December 19, 2018
Newark, Del. (Dec. 19, 2018) --- Kevin Larkin hit a follow-up basket with 3.4 seconds left to give Delaware State a thrilling 73-71 victory over the University of Delaware at the Carpenter Center this evening. The score was 71-71 when DSU’s Pinky Wiley missed a three-point attempt with eight seconds left. Larkin ran down the ball after the miss and drove to the basket for the winning lay-up. Delaware’s Ithiel Horton misfired on a desperation three-point attempt from near mid-court as time expired to seal the victory for the Hornets.

Delaware State snapped a three-game losing streak to the Hens to improve to 3-8 this season. The victory was also the first against a Division I opponent for the Hornets this season, and for new head coach Eric Skeeters.

“It’s fitting that Kevin, a Delaware guy, hit the game-winning shot,” said Skeeters of Larkin, a native of Georgetown, Del., and a Sussex Tech High School product. “Everyone contributed to the win. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys for how hard they played and fought through a great deal of adversity.”

Delaware State led 71-64 after a steal and lay-up by Saleik Edwards with 2:04 left to play.

Delaware answered with a 7-0 run, and tied the score at 71 on a three-pointer by Horton with 18 seconds remaining.

The winning shot capped off another stellar performance for Larkin, who led the Hornets with 22 points and 13 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season, each in the last four games.

“Coach drew up a play for me on our final possession, but Pinky had a good look and took the shot,“ Larkin said. “It’s drilled in us to fight hard for every rebound and loose ball, so that’s what I did. I was in good positon to pick and ball and get to the basket.”

Larkin led all players with 12 points at the half to propel the Hornets to a 38-34 advantage at the break.

The score was 38-38 when the Hornets began to pull away. Edwards caped off a 9-2 run with a three-pointer to give DSU a 47-40 lead at the 14:33 mark of the second half.

The Hens rallied to tie the score at 53-53 after Eric Carter hit two free throws with 10 minutes left to play.

The Hornets never trailed in the second half, although there were three ties in the final 20 minutes.

Delaware State was outshot overall in the game, but took advantage of the three-point shot to earn the win.

The Hornets were 26-for-63 overall from the field (39.7%), but 13-of-27 on three-point attempts (48.1%).

The Hens shot 43.1% overall for the game, hitting on 25 of their 58 shots from floor, but just six- of-30 from beyond the arc (20.0%).

Each team had 37 rebounds, while the Hornets recorded 11 turnovers to 12 for Delaware.

“It’s tough to win a Division I game on the road, but our guys took on the challenge and were rewarded with the victory,” said Skeeters. “We will savor this win for now, but we have one more non-conference game in a few days (Dec. 22 at Weber State) to tune-up for our MEAC schedule.”

Edwards added 18 points for the Hornets, highlighted by four three-point field goals.

Delaware’s Carter led all players with 23 points on eight-of-10 shooting from the field, while Matt Veretto added 13 points for the Hens, who dropped their second game in a row to fall to 8-5 this season.

SUBJECT: Blue Hens Hold Off William & Mary, 58-56, For Second Straight CAA Win

DATE: January 3, 2019

NEWARK, Del. – Darian Bryant keyed a second half comeback and the Blue Hens got some key late defensive stops for the second straight game as Delaware edged William & Mary, 58-56, Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware (10-6, 2-1 CAA) trailed for most of the night, but used a seven-point run to take the lead for good at 53-49 on a Bryant layup with 4:38 remaining. William & Mary (6-9, 2-1 CAA) pulled within a point, but the Blue Hens extended the margin to 57-52 following two Ithiel Horton free throws with 39 seconds left.

The Tribe closed within a pair, and had a chance to win following two missed foul shots by Ryan Allen. However Paul Rowley and Matt Milon each missed contested three-pointers in the final seconds as the Blue Hens escaped with the win.

Horton finished with 15 points for Delaware, while Eric Carter notched his eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Bryant contributed 11 points, all but two in the second half, while Allen also had 11 to go with four assists.

Milon scored a game-high 19 points for the Tribe, while Nathan Knight added 12 on the night.

Both teams struggled from the field, with Delaware shooting 38.2 percent and William & Mary hitting 42.9 percent of its shots. The Tribe also hurt itself by going just 6 of 17 from the foul line.

William & Mary jumped out to an early 17-5 lead, and eventually took a 28-21 advantage into the half. The Tribe again extended the margin to 12 twice early in the second period, before a Bryant triple at the 5:40 mark gave the Blue Hens the lead for good.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“We just kept talking about persevering and grinding. I can’t say enough about Darian Bryant, and this group is learning how to win and believe. It was not an easy offensive night, but we showed a semblance of ourselves in the second half. We were tough defensively in the second half, and I’m proud of our group to hold them to 56 points.”

Ithiel Horton

“When we got down, we just needed to trust who we are and what we do. We were better defensively in the second half, and we really locked in. William & Mary is good, but I like how we’re playing the last few days.”

Darian Bryant

“I have a tremendous amount of confidence in our guys. We got off to a slow start in the first half, but my teammates did a great job of finding me and I stepped up and made some shots late. We just have to be resilient, and keep battling and battling. This was a collective effort for all of us.”

Game Notes:

• Delaware snapped a six-game losing streak to William & Mary

• The Tribe had its two-game winning streak halted

• The Blue Hens held an 18-4 edge in points off turnovers

• Delaware limited William & Mary to only two second chance points

SUBJECT: Allen Leads Delaware Over Elon, 77-65, as Blue Hens Win Third Straight

DATE: January 5, 2019

NEWARK, Del. – Ryan Allen knocked down five three-pointers to lead four Blue Hens in double figures as Delaware won its third straight game with a 77-65 victory over Elon Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Allen tied his season-high with 19 points for Delaware (11-6, 3-1 CAA), while Eric Carter notched his ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Darian Bryant and Kevin Anderson each contributed 11 points, while Matt Veretto had nine and Collin Goss chipped in eight.

Elon led 26-17 with eight minutes left in the opening half, but Delaware answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead. The Phoenix went back up three, before the Blue Hens scored 13 of the final 15 points of the stanza to take a 40-32 advantage into the break.

The Phoenix scored the first bucket of the second half, but Delaware then used a 12-3 run to go up 52-37 with 15:45 left and led by at least eight the rest of the way.

Head Coach Martin Ingelsby

“We take pride in being ready to play on our home court, and our guys are starting to gel together. I’m really happy with our group, we have some guys who can put points on the board. We had an efficient offensive output, and I’m happy with Collin Goss and Ryan Johnson’s production off the bench. We did a good job of limiting their three-point shooting and kept them off the foul line. We’re a work in progress but we’re getting better. Our group is coming along, and the chemistry is as good as it’s been since I’ve been here.”

Ryan Allen

“With the team we have, I don’t feel any pressure to contribute. I’m just trying to help our team win any way I can.”

Eric Carter

“We’ve done an unbelievable job of playing defense over the last three games, which is what we hang our hat on. Ryan is one of our top shooters, and he keyed our offense tonight. Guys are really happy for each other’s success, and we’re just trying to keep it going.”

Game Notes:

• Delaware defeated Elon at home for the third year in a row

• Allen has reached double figures in five of his six games this year

NEWARK, Del. - - The rebounding margin was too much to overcome for the Wilmington University men’s basketball team, as Nyack came to the WU Athletics Complex and left with an 84-79 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Saturday afternoon.

It took time in each half for the Wildcats (6-7, 3-2 CACC) to find its offensive rhythm, but once they did they were able to play catch up, but ran out of time in the second half. The Warriors (4-9, 3-2 CACC) came out of the halftime break and quickly grabbed the lead and never looked back.

The Warriors out-rebounded the Wildcats, 57-35, for the game, including 17 offensive rebounds leading to 13-second chance points. They also outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 50-30.

The Wildcats were stuck on 13 points for 3:51 of game time and found themselves down 23-13 with 9:23 to play in the half. Still down eight, 27-22, Danny Sullivan sparked a 15-7 run over the final 5:38 of the first half with a three-pointer for the Wildcats. Xavier Alston converted a layup and Ed Henderson hit a three-pointer to get to within 31-30 with 2:21 showing on the clock.

The Henderson three-pointer was coupled with a loose ball foul on the play, sending Jordan Harding to the line, resulting in a five-point Wilmington play and a 32-31 lead. Jermaine Head capped the half with a layup, sending the Wildcats into the locker room with a 37-34 lead.

Still down three, the Warriors scored six straight to take a 42-39 lead and never relinquished the lead. It was an 11-0 run by the Warriors that turned the tide, and gave the visitors their largest lead of the night, 65-49, with 9:36 to play in regulation.

The Wildcats wouldn’t lie down however, getting the game to 10-points at 67-57 with 5:41. The Warriors stretched the lead back out to 16 points, 75-59, with 4:06 to play before the Wildcats made one final push. A Jermaine Head old-fashioned three-point play brought the Wildcats to within single digits, 76-68, with 2:17 showing on the clock. A steal and Ed Henderson layup on the ensuing in bounds had the Wildcats to within six points with just over two minutes to play.

Jordan Harding laid one home to bring the Wildcats all the way back to within 78-74, but the Warriors broke the press and had an easy layup at the other end, 80-74, with only 36 seconds to play. Jermaine Head hit a pair of free throws to again get within four, but the Warriors again broke the full court press easily for a layup at the other end, 82-76, with 26 seconds left.

The Warriors were trapped and called a timeout, which they didn’t have, resulting in a technical foul shot for the Wildcats. Jermaine Head hit the second, cutting it to 82-79 with 14 seconds remaining. But the Warriors hit two more free throws and the Wildcats couldn’t convert any more buckets at the other end.

Jermaine Head led the Wildcats with 29 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double, adding four assists and three steals. Thomas Farrior scored 14 points while Henderson finished with 12 points off the bench. Xavier Alston added 11 points and six rebounds in the start for the Wildcats.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Continues its Roll With 69-65 Victory at Concordia (NY)

Sophomore Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) scored a career-best 20 points and senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) came through with five clutch points in the final 3 1/2 minutes, leading Goldey-Beacom to a 69-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Concordia (NY) in Bronxville, NY.

Goldey-Beacom, which led by as many as 16 points earlier in the second half, was holding a 62-58 cushion with 3 1/2 minutes remaining and needed a basket. Stancil came to the rescue by converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:14 remaining for a 65-58 margin.

Concordia closed to 65-61 with 2:56 left when Michael DeMello canned a 3-pointer. Following a series of empty possessions, Cedrick McFadden made a layup with 75 seconds left to get the Clippers with 65-63.

A turnover by the Lightning unbelievably gave the Clippers a chance to either tie or take the lead. McFadden drove to the goal and looked to kick out, but his pass went into the bleachers with 26 seconds remaining for a huge turnover.

Stancil was fouled with 22 seconds to go and hit two free throws for a 67-63 margin. After Concordia’s Jayson Cethoute made a layup with 9.7 seconds remaining made it 67-65, Elliot hit twice from the stripe with nine seconds left for the final.

Elliot shot 7-of-10 from the floor to go with six rebounds and three assists for the Lightning (7-6, 5-0 CACC), who are off to their best league start since opening a school-record 6-0 in 2009-10. GBC also has won six of its last seven overall.

Senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) poured in 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting and sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) added 15 and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

Cethoute poured in 17 points with Alex White Jr. adding 11 and nine rebounds for the Clippers (4-9, 1-4), who only shot 33 percent (22-of-67) from the floor and committed 15 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom led 42-29 at halftime by shooting 49 percent (16-of-33) from the floor and limiting to Concordia to only 27 percent (9-of-34). Elliot and Livingston scored 12 points apiece with Johnson adding 10.

Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday heads to Northeast Philadelphia to battle Holy Family at 7:30 pm. The women’s game precedes it at 5:30 pm.

Amanda McGrogan Keys Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball to 58-51 Victory at Concordia (NY)

Junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) scored nine of Goldey-Beacom’s final 12 points in helping her unit hold off Concordia (NY) for a 58-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win in Bronxville, NY.

The Lightning were down 48-46 with under five minutes left and desperately needing a big play. Leave it to McGrogan, who has been making big plays all season and continued that by converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:24 remaining to make it 49-48.

After McGrogan’s free throw with 3:56 to go, Cameron Corbett made a layup for the Clippers and a 50-50 tie. But McGrogan was on the spot again, hitting a layup with 3:03 remaining for a 52-50 cushion.

Senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) made a short jumper with 1:57 left for a 54-50 GBC lead before Sabrina Clement’s free throw with 1:06 remaining brought Concordia within three.

The Clippers then got the ball back with under a minute to go still down 54-51 before the game’s biggest defensive play. Clement was outside the key looking for options, but freshman Reetta Saaski (Espoo, Finland) made those options zero by stripping her to give the Lightning the ball.

McGrogan then hit two free throws with 56 seconds left for a 56-51 contest to all but ice things. She also made one free throw with 5.9 seconds to play for the final, giving the Lightning four straight wins over the Clippers and seven in the last eight encounters.

McGrogan ended with 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds and shot 8-for-11 from the line. She has averaged 16.3 points and 6.5 rebounds over her last six contests.

Sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) poured in a game-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting with five rebounds and Turner-Rush scored nine points for the Lightning, who shot 39 percent (19-of-49) from the floor.

GBC also forced 19 turnovers, making it 12 times this season it has induced at least 14.

Sara Hopkins netted 16 points and Corbett played great with 14, five rebounds and four steals for the Clippers, who shot 32 percent (19-of-60) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half ended on a 12-2 run over the final 6:44, opening a 30-20 lead. McGrogan led the way with five points.

The Lightning went into the locker room holding the Clippers to just 24 percent shooting (7-of-29) and forcing them into 10 turnovers. Speaks scored 10 points in the half and McGrogan added seven.

Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday faces Holy Family at 5:30 pm in Philadelphia. The men’s game follows at 7:30 pm.
