Saluting the Spartans
The St. Mark's wrestling team went 4-8 against a tough dual-meet schedule, but coach David Williams praised the Spartans' captains after Saturday's 41-27 loss to Caesar Rodney.
"They have to take care of mopping their own mats, rolling stuff out, doing their own things," Williams said. "We videotape each other, because we don't have managers. Overall this season, we overachieved. We have nothing to be ashamed of."
Williams was a DIAA individual champion at 152 pounds for St. Mark's in 1998, one of an overwhelming eight state champs on a legendary Spartans team. He works at St. Georges now and often arrives at St. Mark's just in time for practice, leaving a lot of responsibility in the hands of senior captains Justin Engelmann, Thomas Otlowski, Kenan Megahed and Randy Mitchell.
"I ask a lot of them all the time," Williams said. "They're self-sufficient. They run themselves, and it's the captains who lead all of that."
A couple of the captains will be state-title contenders. Engelmann, who earned his 100th career victory last Thursday against Cape Henlopen, will be a threat at 126 after finishing fifth at 113 last year. Otlowski will be in the mix at 145 after finishing sixth at 138 in 2013.

Hats off to the boys and the coaching staff, but this team and especially these kids deserve a little more support from their school.

Thanks for posting...and you couldn't be more right about the kids deserving more respect from the school. The administration over the past few years appears to have been deliberately driving the program into the ground. No shows by admissions and financial aid staff to appointments with prospective student athletes and removing the wrestling trophy case from the lobby showcase are a small hint. Hopefully they make a comeback

Believe it or not it is actually against the DIAA recruiting rules to have athletic trophy's in the school lobby showcases with the academic awards.. they have to be in the athletic areas such as near the gym etc.....

Crazy rule RR. Thanks for posting article.

they have been gradually declining ever since bastenelli took AD job at Newark.

Unfortunately for the independent schools, their enrollment can be vulnerable during hard financial times.

A couple things,
....as I recall the wrestling trophies were right there in a trophy case by the gym along with the other sports trophies, I hadn't heard they were removed.

...as far as I know St E's, Sallies, Padua, and Ursuline have had pretty consistent numbers.

...I've heard the same stories about the administration as 141 has, but I can't imagine that its intentional. I've got to believe they have bigger issues, so if the wrestling team doesn't have a louder voice than football or baseball, it goes unheard.

@ Worn....great read....and good for the kids!

@ RR and Concord.....def a crazy rule....I can see (not agree with) why the DIAA thinks its an issue, but as soon as a prospective student walks into Sallies gym for example....they see all those banners hanging and lets be real....with full access-these kids and parents know what schools accomplish -from the athletic standpoint.

regarding St.Marks.....something is up with the admin and their approach to athletics....and on the surface, it does appear that school administration is going in a different direction. If that is the case....then its time for some change. The student part is always first in student-athlete.....that said.....for kids who have a passion for sports and all the great things that are derived from that.....no way should administrators should allow for that to decline.....intent or not.

@sparty.....where you at on this?

This is a tough situation. The first thing that needs to happen is that the program needs to be reunited with a few missing links. Being an Alumnus of the program, I have first hand experience of why it was successful.

1) Discipline - This covers everything from how the kids and coaches dress for travel (ie. Shirts and ties), to working out after practice, to putting in the time in the weight room in the off season, etc, etc, etc.

2) Commitment to excellence / technique - We did not have teams that finished in the top 10 nationally by chance. Everyone on the team committed to excellence on an off the mat. Training revolved around being technically sound.

3) Leadership - Need a coaching staff that commits all their energy to the team. This is not easy.

Not making dual meet states two years in a row is hard to swallow. From 1993 (first year of the dual meet format) on we qualified every year. Winning 7 times, runner up 10 times. That is when the field was 4 teams, not 6.

Lastly, not having a booster program for the sport is a joke. The Spartan Athletic Fund is too socialist for me. I don't want to fund the track team...
