In the victory, Delaware (1-1) received strong performances from junior KyleBaker who went 4-5, with three runs scored and James Meeker (5.0 IP, 2H, 3K) who earned the win.

The Blue Hens struck first Saturday afternoon when shortstop VinnyVaccone doubled home Nick Patten. The extra-base hit gave the Hens a 1-0 lead.

Charleston Southern (1-1) answered back in the home half of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs to take a brief 2-1 lead.

The CSU lead didn’t last long, as Delaware struck for three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Senior captain Diaz Nardo delivered the big hit for the Blue Hens, as his one-single drove home Patten and Baker.

Baker later added a solo home run in the seventh, before Patten delivered the Blue Hens final run of the game.

Delaware and Charleston Southern will play for the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Freshman Billy Sullivan IV will make his Blue Hens debut against CSU righty Tyler Weekley.

Head coach JimSherman:

"I'm very proud of our effort tonight, as we played a clean ballgame. We pitched well, allowing just one earned run, and we got timely hits. In the field, we were clean too committing just one error. Through two games our bats are starting to heat up, and we're pitching extremely well. Hopefully, we can keep it going tomorrow in a pivotal rubber-match for our club."

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

• This series the Blue Hens bullpen has pitched 10.2 innings, allowing just one total run.
• Through two games, Delaware has successfully stolen all six bases they have attempted to steal.
• The Hens hit 7-16 (.438) with two-outs Saturday and drove in three runs with two outs.
• Meeker's 5.0 innings pitched in relief is a new career-high.
• Meeker is now 7-2 in his career and has won seven out of his last eight decisions.
• Baker is batting 6-9 (.667) with three runs scored and three batted in this series. The outfielder stole a pair of bases this afternoon and has three on the season.

Blue Hens Freshman Billy Sullivan IV Earns CAA Rookie of the Week Honors

RICHMOND, Va.— University of Delaware freshman pitcher BillySullivanIV earned his first Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Rookie of the Week honor, the conference announced Tuesday.

Sullivan (New Castle, Del./St. Mark's) had a breakout debut against Charleston Southern on Sunday pitching the first five shutout innings for UD. Sullivan scattered just three hits and struck out nine, helping the Blue Hens to a 1-0 series-clinching win over the Buccaneers.

Sullivan IV is the Blue Hens first CAA Rookie of the Week honoree since current Blue Hen Kyle Bakershared the award the week of Mar. 15, 2015.

“Well, we certainly were not surprised with the performance we received from Billy this past weekend,” head coach Jim Sherman said. “We expected him to come out and be really competitive. What was really good to see was not the electric fastball as we know that was there, but the breaking ball, which was excellent. He has worked extremely hard with [pitching ] coach [Troy] O’Neal to develop his breaking stuff over the winter. And certainly, the hard work paid off because it was a difference maker for his last weekend. Striking out nine batters and not allowing a run in your first collegiate game is pretty good stuff. Excited to see what he can do this weekend and the rest of the season.”

Off to a 2-1 start, the Blue Hens will continue the season this weekend (Feb. 24-26) at Florida Atlantic University. First pitch from Boca Raton is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Hervada Named CAA Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – All week last week, the talk amongst the University of Delaware coaching staff was that they felt like junior faceoff specialist Jake Hervada was about to have a big performance.

Hervada made that talk come to fruition last Saturday against Monmouth, having a career day to lead the Blue Hens to a 15-11 triumph over the Hawks to earn Delaware’s first 3-0 start since 2011.

“Jake was terrific all game long and really helped set the tone for a near complete first half that gave us some breathing room early in the game,” Head Coach Ben DeLuca said. “He’s been working really hard in practice and it paid off with an outstanding day on Saturday.”

In the win, Hervada won a career-high 21 faceoffs in 28 attempts, including the first nine faceoffs of the game, to help the Blue Hens grab an early 6-1 lead.

His 21 facoff wins were the most by a Blue Hen in 11 years and the fifth-highest single-game total in the NCAA this season.

In addition to his dominance at the X, he grabbed a career-high 11 ground balls and added an assist in the Blue Hen victory.

Hervada and his teammates return to Delaware Stadium this Saturday to host #7 Villanova. Game time on LSN is set for 1 p.m.

The Blue Hens (4-14) took a two-run lead into the final inning, but the Bobcats (9-10) quickly loaded the bases on two walks sandwiched around a single. Blue Hens Win Epic Rubber Match Over Monmouth, 7-6

NEWARK, Del. --The University of Delaware baseball team won a crucial 7-6 rubber-match from Monmouth University Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Redshirt freshman Chance DiFebbo drove in the game-winning run with two out on a suicide squeeze play in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Senior JamesMeeker, who started for the Blue Hens (8-5) at designated hitter, stranded the bases loaded in the ninth with one out to earn his second save of the series. Freshman Billy Sullivan IV went the first four innings for Delaware, allowing a season-high three earned runs. The St. Mark’s product threw 90 pitches and struck out a pair of Monmouth (4-8) hitters, earning a no-decision.

At the plate, CalvinScott hit his first home run of the season and reached base four times (three walks) scoring the winning run. Centerfielder Kevin Mohollen went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Andrew Reich recorded a pair of hits in four plate appearances.

Delaware continues its eight-game homestand Tuesday afternoon against Maryland. First pitch from Bob Hannah Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Head coach Jim Sherman:

“I think it’s important for us to play some close games early on. Once you get into CAA play and into the postseason, the games are usually close, so this prepares us well. After Friday’s tough performance it was great to see us bounce back yesterday, winning a tight pitcher duel before the bats picked up today. Down the stretch today we got the right combination of clutch pitching and execution at the plate. Meeker has a knack for being able to escape those tough situations, so that’s why we trusted him today. I think he enjoys them. He’s a senior who’s been in similar situations before so he knows how to handle them.”

On calling for a bunt in the 8th inning:

“It’s widely discussed that you don’t really bunt with two strikes, but I don’t really buy into that philosophy. For me, it was about making sure the player at the plate gets the sign and that everyone is on the same page. If Chance would have fouled it off, to me it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal because we would have still would have had the bases loaded for our hottest hitter right now, Diaz [Nardo]. So, to me, it wasn’t that big of a gamble. It was just a matter of Chance executing it and give him credit because he did a great job.”

James Meeker:

“I think high-leverage situations are fun to pitch in. As a competitor, those are the types of games and moments you like to play in. I think the pressure is not on me as a pitcher, but the hitter because he’s expected to deliver a run. You just have to execute your pitches. Friday we didn’t play our best game, but this weekend shows that our team is resilient fighting back to win a big series here at home.”

On the challenges associated with being the DH and pitching in the same game:

“Going from hitting to pitching has its challenges for sure, but it reminds me of my tee-ball days where I used to play all of the different positions. It’s a little different at this level, but it’s fun to be able to make different impacts on the game.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

• Delaware improves to 8-1 when scoring first.
• UD is now 4-0 when hitting a home run.
• The Blue Hens are now 7-0 when leading after seven innings.
• Delaware has won eight straight home series dating back to last season.
• The Hens are now 6-0 when scoring at least six runs.
• Today’s victory is Delaware’s first this season when allowing more than five runs (1-4).
• UD has stolen 22 bases in 30 attempts this season. Seven different Hens have stolen a base so far.
• Meeker stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in both of Delaware’s victories. The righty leads the team in both wins (2) and saves (2).
• DiFebbo has three RBI in his first five at-bats.

Timely Hitting, Pitching Propels Hens to 2-0 CAA Start

NEWARK, Del. –The University of Delaware baseball team opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a doubleheader sweep over Towson University Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Hens (12-8) defeated the Tigers (3-17) 6-3 in the opener, before holding on for a 2-1 victory. In game one, junior KyleHinton (3-1) pitched six and one-third innings, allowing just two runs. Senior CalvinScott went three-for-four in the opener, driving in a pair of runs. Senior Colman Vila appeared in his 76th game for Delaware, breaking the all-time program mark.

In the nightcap, Delaware freshman Billy Sullivan IV threw the strongest outing of his collegiate career, throwing a career-high six shutout innings. Sullivan struck out 10. Kyle Baker and Diaz Nardo each drove in a run, while senior James Meekerpitched 1.2

innings to earn his third save.

Delaware will look for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. RHP Nick Spadafino (0-3, 7.99 ERA) will take the ball for Delaware, while RHP Michael Adams (0-2, 6.58 ERA).

Head coach JimSherman:

"It's always a good day when you win both legs of the doubleheader. Today we got more good pitching from guys like Hinton, Meeker, Sullivan and Vila. Allowing just four runs (three earned) today was really good to see. Both Hinton and Sullivan threw well then the 'pen did their job. We're still struggling a bit too much at the plate. But overall we're still trying to find our new identity. Last year we were a team built on power hitting, but this team is going to have to do it a bit differently. We're going to have to find ways to manufacture some runs. Today we did a good job of that. Tomorrow the good news is we still have a bunch of fresh arms, so we're in good shape for the third game of the series."

On Hinton and Sullivan:
"Coming off of being sick last week we wanted to make sure that Billy had enough in the tank, and he did. We want to get Billy to the point where he starts to work deeper into ballgames, pitching into the sixth, seventh or eighth innings. Today we could have sent Billy back out of the seventh, but we decided to not. Our bullpen was fresh and have been doing a good job all year, so we felt that was the best move. Kyle is a competitor out there. He wasn't as sharp as we've seen him in the past three or four outings, but he battled through. That's the difference in him this season having matured as an upperclassman. He's learned how to pitch. I tip my hat to Kyle for hanging tough and battling."

RHP Billy Sullivan IV:

"This was a great day for our team. Our defense was excellent today, and coach Troy (O'Neal) did a great job calling the game. Towson is a great team, so it was great to be able to pitch as well as I did. It felt awesome being back out there with my teammates today after missing last week. I have the most confidence in the world in our bullpen, and I knew they were going to get the job done. I wasn't too worried about it because I knew Clay [Conaway], Chris [Ludman] and Meek were going to come through."

HEN SCRATCHINGS: • Delaware improves to 9-4 this season at home, and to 10-3 when scoring first.
• The Hens are 2-0 in CAA play for the first time since 2013, when the Hens also took the first two games of a series against Towson. Delaware seeking its first 3-0 CAA start since 2011 when the Hens swept Hofstra.
• UD is now 12-2 the past two seasons at home against conference opponents.
• Delaware improved to 9-0 when scoring at least six runs this season and to 5-2 in one-run games.
• The Hens are now 10-0 when leading after seven this season, and 40-1 the past two seasons.
• Baker returned to the lineup for the first time since Mar. 10 (six games missed).
• Sullivan IV hasn't allowed a run in three of his five starts and allowed one run or fewer in four of five. The freshman's 10 strikeouts today were a career-high.
• Hinton has now allowed just seven earned runs in six starts this season. The righty hasn't allowed more than two runs in any start this season and has won a career-best three games.
• UD improves to 5-1 in Hinton starts, having won four consecutive games that the Delaware native has pitched.
• Sullivan is now 3-0 in his college career and Delaware improved to 4-1 in his five starts. The St. Mark's product has struck out 30 batters in his 23.2 innings pitched.
• Hinton and Sullivan have now won a team-best three games, while Meeker earned his team leading third save.
KevinMohollen has now reached base in 15 consecutive games.

Drexel (7-8-1, 1-1 CAA) scored a run in the top of the first inning of the opener on an RBI double by Linda Rush, but Delaware (7-17, 1-1 CAA) answered back in the bottom half when Reyna de Jesus singled home Leanna Gearhart. The Dragons went back in front with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth, before the Blue Hens countered with five in the bottom of the frame.

Blue Hens Denied Series Sweep; Drop Finale to Towson

NEWARK, Del. --The University of Delaware baseball team’s bid for a series sweep was denied Sunday afternoon, as the visiting Towson University Tigers defeated the Blue Hens 10-2 at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Blue Hens (12-9, 2-1 CAA) who defeated Towson (4-17, 1-2 CAA) 6-3 and 2-1 yesterday afternoon, received a pair of hits and an RBI from firstbaseman NickPatten. Junior KevinMohollen reached base twice, scoring his team-leading 15th run of the season.

Senior NickSpadafino (0-4) pitched the first three innings for Delaware, allowing four runs. Delaware received a pair of shutout innings from relievers Winston Allen and ColeBenjamin. Delaware returns to action on Tuesday for the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at La Salle. First pitch from Philadelphia is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Head coach JimSherman:

"Credit Towson they were the better ball club from the start today and came back with a better performance after dropping both games of the doubleheader yesterday. Right now we're not stringing together enough consistent play to get a series sweep. We have to figure out a way to close out the sweep. Towson hit it better than we did and pitched it better than we did. They were just the better team. Today is disappointing, but we did complete the series victory which was the goal. The plan is to start [Joey] Haass on Tuesday and give him his first career start. Hopefully, we can forget this one today and get back to winning ways at La Salle."

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

• Delaware falls to 3-9 when scoring less than five runs and to 1-5 when the opponent scores in the first inning.
• The Hens are now 2-9 when getting out-hit this season.
• Mohollen extended his on-base streak to 16 games.
• The Hens fall to 8-5 when Mohollen scores a run.
• Allen has not allowed an earned run in his first 4.2 innings pitched. The righty struck out a pair of batters in his two innings.
ZackMiller recorded a hit for the seventh consecutive game. The catcher has now driven in a run in five out of his last seven starts.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Delaware baseball team dropped game two of the weekend series 11-0 to the University of Michigan Saturday afternoon at the Wilpon Complex.

The Blue Hens (13-11) committed five errors in the first four innings Saturday, allowing Michigan (15-11) to score eight runs (one earned).

Junior Kevin Mohollen went two-for-five, while Nick Patten recorded a pair of hits for the second consecutive game. Kyle Hintonpitched five innings for the Blue Hens, striking out a pair of batters. The loss snapped four-game winning streak for Delaware in his starts.

The Hens Wolverines will complete the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Freshman Billy Sullivan IV will take the mound for Delaware. He will be opposed by RHP Karl Kauffmann (3-2, 3.38 ERA). Saturday’s nightcap has been canceled due to inclement weather.

Head coach Jim Sherman:

"Michigan did a much better job dealing with the weather elements today than we did. Yes, it was cold, windy and rainy, but we need to do a better job of navigating the elements. Our effort today was disappointing overall. This team has done a good job all year of bouncing back, and hopefully, we close out the series tomorrow with a strong effort."

Blue Hens Drop Series Opener at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware baseball team fell 9-0 Friday afternoon to Hofstra University Friday afternoon at University Field.

The Blue Hens (13-13, 2-2 CAA) managed just a pair of hits and three baserunners off Hofstra (13-9, 3-4 CAA) lefty hander John Rooney who pitched a complete-game shutout.

Colman Vila (2-2) pitched the first three innings for Delaware, allowing three runs (two earned). The lefty struck out five Pride batters.

Junior Nick Patten reached base twice in the loss, while Tyler Callender added a base hit. The Blue Hens and Pride return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Junior Kyle Hinton (3-2, 1.57 ERA) will pitch for Delaware, while Matt Weissheier (1-3, 3.69 ERA) will take the ball for Hofstra.

Head coach Jim Sherman:

"Hofstra was the better team in all aspects of the game today. Give their pitcher Rooney a lot of credit. He showed today why he's one best pitcher in the league. We just couldn't get the bats going. We still have two games left to play well, and we still have a chance to win the series. I know our guys will bounce back for sure."

Meeker, 10th Inning Explosion Propels Delaware to Victory at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. –The University of Delaware baseball team behind five and one-third shutout innings from James Meeker defeated Hofstra University 5-2 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at University Field.

Delaware (14-14, 3-3 CAA) freshman Billy Sullivan IV took a no-hitter into the fifth inning Sunday, but a two-out single by Hofstra’s (14-10, 4-5 CAA) Austin Gauthier ended Sullivan’s no-no bid. The righty pitched 4.2 innings allowing just one hit and a pair of runs. He struck out eight batters.

After the single and a pair of walks loaded the bases, the Pride added a pair of runs on a wild pitch and an infield single, but Meeker was able to strand a pair of runners in scoring positon with a pop-up.

Trailing for the first time all day, the Blue Hens rallied in the sixth. Kyle Baker and Nick Patten recorded back-to-back two-out singles and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. With the tying runs in scoring position, senior Calvin Scott lined a two-out single to centerfield that scored both Baker and Patten.

The game remained tied at two, as Hofstra and Delaware traded zeros until the top of the 10th when the Blue Hens struck for the final three runs of the game.

Shortstop Vinny Vaccone walked with one out and advanced to second on a Kevin Mohollen single. Batting with a pair of runners on, second baseman Erik Bowren tripled down the left field line, scoring both Vaccone and Mohollen. Bowren ultimately scored the Hens third run of the inning on a passed ball.

Meeker recorded three ground balls in the bottom half to secure the victory for the Blue Hens, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Delaware returns to action Wednesday afternoon for the Semifinals of the Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch from Lehigh is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Head coach Jim Sherman:
"Today was a game we truly needed as it allowed us to regain our confidence heading into another important week. Today our guys played well. We received excellent efforts from Sullivan and Meeker, and we got a few timely hits. Hopefully, we can ride the momentum of this game into a four-game week. Overall, I'm proud of the guys."

HEN SCRATCHINGS: • Delaware improves to 5-2 in games started by Sullivan IV.
• For the third consecutive game, Delaware struck out at least 10 batters. For the weekend, the Hens struck out 34 batters.
• The Hens played their first extra-inning game since last season's NCAA Regionals against Arizona (6/3).
• UD is now 7-1 when holding opponents to two runs or fewer.

Blue Hens Ride Offensive Explosion to LBC Title Game

BETHLEHEM, Pa. –The University of Delaware baseball team is heading to Citizens Bank Park, as Delaware defeated Lehigh University 15-7 Wednesday afternoon at J. David Walker Field.

The Blue Hens (15-14), who scored at least a run in the first five innings, received 14 hits and placed 20 batters on base.

Freshman Joey Haass (1-0) pitched the first five innings for Delaware, allowing just three hits and a run to earn his first career victory.

Offensive highlights included centerfielder Kevin Mohollen going three-for-three and reaching base six times, Kyle Baker going two-for-six with four runs batted in, and freshman Ben Werkheiser, who entered his first career game in the seventh inning, hitting his first career home run in the ninth.

In total five different Blue Hens recorded multiple hits, and five different Hens recorded an RBI.

The victory advances Delaware to their first Liberty Bell Classic Championship game on Tuesday night against Lafayette. First pitch from Citizens Bank Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Delaware returns to action Friday afternoon when they welcome UNCW for a weekend series. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. All fans are encouraged to arrive early as before the game (2:45 p.m.) last season's Colonial Athletic Association Championship banner will be revealed.

Head coach Jim Sherman:

“Today was a great day for us in a lot of ways. We received a really strong outing from Joey Haass, who earned his first career victory. Then at the plate, we strung together some really good at-bats. It was nice to see Ben Werkheiser hit his first career home run in the ninth. Overall, excited to advance to the Liberty Bell Finals and get a chance to play at an MLB ballpark.”

On carrying the momentum from Sunday’s comeback victory over Hofstra:

"Sunday was an absolutely critical game that we won, and I think it carried over to today. We had been scuffling a bit. We needed that win Sunday really badly, and we got it. Winning that game took some of the pressure off of the guys, especially at the plate. Today I thought we played a bit more relaxed and were better at the plate. I thought we received really good pitching, we just had that one bump in the road in the eighth inning where we had a few miscues. Other than that it was a good day.”

C Ben Werkheiser:

“Today was a special moment for me. I came into the game and just wanted to be aggressive and look for a fastball early in the count. In the ninth I got a hanging slider and I was just trying to square it up. I wasn’t trying to hit a home run and I was just trying to stay within myself. I’m just really happy that we got this win and we get to play at Citizens Bank Park. Tuesday should be a special experience because I grew up going to Phillies games there. It should be a lot of fun getting to play in a Major League stadium.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware improves to 4-0 in mid-week games.
• The victory advances the Blue Hens to the LBC Final for the first time since 2013. • Delaware has won an LBC-high eight titles.
• Delaware stole five bases this afternoon.
• Mohollen's four runs scored tied his career-high.
• First baseman Nick Patten went two-for-five in today's game. The Butler, Pa. native extended his hitting streak to seven games and now has reached base in 16 consecutive contests.
• Freshman Jordan Hutchins went three-for-five with a pair of runs scored and two RBI. The two RBIs and runs scored are the first of his career. Hutchins also stole his first two career bases.
• Baker's four RBI are new career-high.
• Werkheiser's home run occurred in just his second career at-bat. The freshman's long-ball was the first home run that has been hit this season at J. David Walker Field.
