NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team dropped a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader to Hofstra, 6-0 and 13-5, Saturday afternoon at sun-splashed UD Softball Stadium.

The Pride (27-8, 11-0 CAA) scored a run during the top of the first of the opener on an RBI double by Brielle Pietrafesa, before Megan Patierno hit a solo homer in the second. Michaela Transue added an RBI single in the fifth, while Pietrafesa drilled a three-run homer in the seventh to close the scoring.

Hofstra pitcher Sarah Cornell fired a two-hit shutout while striking out 10 batters. Giovanna Kolofer and Mariah Kondravy had the two hits for Delaware (10-27, 2-9 CAA).

Brittany Allocca belted a two-run homer for the Pride in the first inning of the nightcap, but the Blue Hens answered right back in the bottom half as Reyna de Jesus singled home a run before Kondravy scored on an error to knot the game at 2-2.

DSU tacked on a fourth inning run when Maurice Parsons tripled with one out and crossed the plate on a groundout by John Weglarz to stretch the lead to 4-0. Parsons stretched his hitting streak to nine games with his second career triple.

The Eagles wiped out the Delaware State lead plus some with seven runs in their next at bat. The big hits in the inning were a two-run triple by Castillo and a two-run double by Alviarez.

Helmbrecht tripled in as run in the fifth to give Coppin State an 8-4 lead.

Sullivan's Gem Pushes Hens to 5-1 Series-Clinching Win

NEWARK, Del. –In front of a raucous crowd of nearly 600, the University of Delaware baseball team defeated UNCW 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium behind seven dominant innings from freshman Billy Sullivan IV .

The Delaware (17-14, 5-3 CAA) right-hander, who struck out 16 UNCW (20-14, 4-4 CAA) batters, allowed just four baserunners and one single outside of the infield. The Delaware native struck out six straight hitters from the first to third innings and retired seven straight batters via the punch out of that span.

The victory improves the freshman to 4-1 on the season.

UD struck first Saturday, as Kevin Mohollen doubled to open the game. After an Erik Bowren single placed runners on the corners, Kyle Baker singled home Mohollen to give Delaware 1-0 lead. The lead quickly became 2-0 when first baseman Nick Patten singled home Bowren from second base.

The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the seventh, when Calvin Scott doubled the Delaware advantage, hitting a two-run blast down the left field line. Delaware added its fifth run of the game on back-to-back doubles from Vinny Vaccone and Mohollen.

In the ninth, UNCW loaded the bases with nobody out, but senior James Meeker coaxed a double play and a lazy ground ball to short to earn his fifth save of the season.

Delaware will go for the sweep of UNCW tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Bob Hannah Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Head coach Jim Sherman:

"Today, Billy gave us one of the best all-time starts in program history. He was that good today both with his command and then the 16 strikeouts. This was the best performance we’ve received since Brandon Walter struck out 17 batters last year against Penn State. It’s great for both the University of Delaware and our program to have two great talents from Delaware. Today was a spectacular day for Billy. And then offensively we came up with a few clutch hits. The ingredients from last season are beginning to creep back in a bit. We’re getting good starting pitching, and the bullpen is doing what they need to do to finish it. We’re starting to hit some home runs and we’re getting clutch hits. That’s what we were doing last season at about this point of the year, and we were able to ride it to an NCAA Tournament appearance. We’re starting to resemble the team from last year a bit. We’re not as strong an offensive club as we were last season, but today was reminiscent of last season. We’re finding ways to win games right now.”

On whether they thought about giving Sullivan IV the eighth:

“The original plan was to give Billy the eighth inning, and then Calvin hit the two-run homer to make it 4-0. The bottom of the seventh was a bit longer of an inning and so we felt he had a bit longer of a rest time. Under the circumstances, we figured it was better to go to [Colman] Vila. We knew that Colman was going to protect the lead, so we don’t have any regrets not sending Billy back out for the eighth.”

Sullivan IV:

“Coach Troy [O’Neal] and I have really been working on my changeup. I haven’t always had the most command of it this season, but it was a huge pitch for me today. Coach Troy did a great job of calling pitches and [Zack] Miller did a great job behind the plate as well. It’s always fun getting out there, but to me it was a little different because it was UNCW. The seniors and the older guys told me about last year and I could sense they were excited both yesterday and today. It’s always fun to play in these rivalry games.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

• Delaware improves to 11-5 this season at home.
• The Hens are now 14-0 this season when leading after to seven and improve to 8-1 when allowing two runs or less.
• Before Saturday's ninth-inning run, Delaware held UNCW scoreless for 14 consecutive innings.
• UD is now 14-1 this season when scoring at least five runs and improved to 13-1 when out-hitting an opponent.
• Delaware hit a two-run home run for the second consecutive game. Delaware improves to 11-3 when hitting a home run.
• Sullivan IV's 16 strikeouts are the most by a Blue Hen since Brandon Walter struck out 17 batters in eight innings against Penn State (3/) last season.
• Sullivan's 16 strikeouts are the most by a freshman since 2009.
• Patten's first-inning RBI single extended his hitting streak to nine and his on-base streak to 22.
• Scott's two-run blast was his fourth of the season, which ties him for the team lead with Patten.
• Meeker has earned a save in back-to-back games. The senior now has five for the season, which is good for the fourth most in the CAA. The righty lowered his ERA to 2.48.

Blue Hens Fall in LBC Final

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Locked in a pitcher’s duel for the majority of the night, the University of Delaware baseball team fell victim to a late-inning outburst in a 9-4 loss to Lafayette College in the 2018 Liberty Bell Classic Championship Game on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Junior Kyle Baker had three hits in three at-bats to lead the offense, while senior Matt Hornich (1-3) tossed 5.1 innings, scattering five hits and three runs on the evening. The lefty struck out five batters.

The Blue Hens took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Erik Bowren drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Baker. A batter later, Nick Patten lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Bowren.

Three innings later, Calvin Scott laced an RBI single to center field to push Delaware’s lead to 2-0. Lafayette added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to grab a 3-2 advantage.

The Leopards added six runs in the final two innings to lock up the win.Delaware returns to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting Saint Joseph's. First pitch from Bob Hannah Stadium is set for 3 p.m. Freshman Joey Haass is scheduled to take the ball for Delaware.

Head coach Jim Sherman: "It's always disappointing to end up on the short-end of a championship game, but for our guys, the silver-lining is that we got to play in the championship of a tournament in an MLB stadium. Our young group is continuing to grow and figure out our identity. Heading into the ninth I thought if we kept it at 6-4 we had a chance to maybe come back and win it, but we let it get away from us. We have a group that has continued to show an ability to bounce back. The nice thing is we have that chance to do just that tomorrow when we host a good Saint Joe's team ahead of another important CAA weekend against JMU."

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware dropped its first midweek contest of the season. The Blue Hens were 4-0 heading into tonight's game.
• The Hens fall to 0-3 in night games.

• For just the fifth time all season, Delaware lost a game in which they scored first. The Hens were 13-4 when scoring first before tonight.

• Delaware is now just 3-15 this season when getting out-hit.
• With his fourth-inning walk, Patten has now reached base in 24 consecutive games this season.

• Baker record multiple hits in a game for the 11th time this season.

• Delaware falls to 6-3 when Bowren hits second in the order.

Hinton's Strong Outing, Patten's Three Hits Push Blue Hens to 5-1 Victory Over JMU

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball team behind strong performances from Kyle Hinton (6.1 IP, 1 ER, 8K), Nick Patten (3-4, HR, 2B) and Colman Vila (2.2 IP, 5K) defeated James Madison University 5-1 Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Blue Hens (19-16, 6-4 CAA), who won their fourth conference game in their last five CAA games, received another strong outing from Hinton (5-3) who pitched into the seventh inning for the fourth time this season.

Delaware took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman Jordan Hutchins tripled home Calvin Scott in the second inning. The Blue Hens quickly made it 2-0, when catcher Zack Miller doubled off the top of the wall, scoring Hutchins.

After a scoreless Hinton frame in the third, Delaware quickly doubled its advantage in the bottom half of the inning. After Erik Bowren led-off the inning with a double, Kyle Baker drove a single to center, scoring Bowren. Two pitches later, Patten doubled to set-up a pair of runners in scoring position. Baker would later score on a sac-fly by Calvin Scott.

The game remained 4-0 until the seventh when James Madison (20-18, 5-8 CAA) looked to cut into the UD lead. Lead-off batter Hunter Johnson hit a lead-off home run to cut the Delaware lead to 4-1. After a strikeout, JMU placed runners on the corners with one man out, prompting a pitching change. Facing the tying run at the plate, Vila struck out the next two batters he faced.

Delaware tacked on an extra insurance run in the eighth when Patten crushed a home run high over the Blue Monster in left. Vila struck out the first two batters he faced in the ninth, before ending the game on a fly-out to right.

The victory moves Delaware into sole possession of fourth place in the CAA standings, one-half game ahead of UNCW who hosts Towson later this evening.

Delaware and James Madison return for the second game of the series Saturday afternoon. CAA Pitcher of the Week Billy Sullivan IV (4-1, 1.99 ERA) will pitch for Delaware, while RHP Kevin Kelly (2-3, 3.27 ERA) will pitch for JMU.

Head coach Jim Sherman:
"Today was a good day for us. I thought we played really well. Hinton showed early on that he was sharp so that always gives our guys a boost. After he stranded the bases loaded in the second, Hutchins came up with the big triple with two outs that got us started. I thought it was big to get the two early runs in the second and then add two more in the third. We got some timely hits from Patten and Baker in the third. I think today was a good clean game. Our pitching today was outstanding as both Hinton and Vila were great. When we went to Vila in the seventh we thought that Hinton still had some energy left, but we liked the lefty-lefty matchup with Colman. And then everything worked around. Colman is a guy who has been around now for five years, having pitched the most games in program history. He knows how to navigate through those big spots because he's been there before. He's an important guy to have late in games."

On tomorrow's game with James Madison:
"I think we're in great shape tomorrow because if you were going to draw it up you'd love to use only one reliever. It's nice that we have Billy tomorrow and we didn't use [James] Meeker and some of our other bullpen arms. So I don't think we could have drawn this up any better."

Kyle Hinton:
"Today I was just trying to do everything I could to give our team a chance to win today and tomorrow. My goal today was to throw strikes and trust my defense behind me. Our bats have been coming around after a slower start, and Patty has been tearing it up lately. For me, having a lead going into the third inning gave me extra confidence out there. I think we're hitting our stride a bit. We're coming off a big weekend where we won two-of-three against UNCW and now we got the first one in this series. We just want to keep things rolling. To me, it seems like we're having more fun as a team. Hopefully, we can the series tomorrow."

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware improves to 13-6 this season at Bob Hannah Stadium, and to 5-2 in CAA games played at Bob Hannah Stadium.
• Tomorrow Delaware will look for its seventh consecutive CAA series victory at home.
• Delaware is now 16-0 this season when leading after seven.
• The Hens are 15-1 this season when out-hitting their opponents.
• Patten finished just a triple shy of his second career cycle. The lone out that first baseman made was a deep fly-out to left field where the ball was knocked down by the wind.
• With his single in the second inning, Patten increased his on-base streak to 26 games. The Pa. native is now hitting .258 this season.
• Vila has now struck out 33 batters in 24.2 innings.
• Hinton re-took the strikeout lead from Sullivan IV. The righty's eight strikeouts increases his season total to 60. The Delaware native improved his record to 5-0 this season at Bob Hannah Stadium, having struck out 41 batters in 38 innings of work.
• Hinton's ERA is just 1.18 at home this season.
• Hinton earned his team-leading fifth victory of the season this afternoon.
• Hutchins has driven in four runs this week. All four have come with two outs.
• OF Kevin Mohollen failed to reach base in a home game for the first time all season.

Blue Hens Flirt with History as Sullivan IV and Vila Throw Combined One-Hitter, Securing Bark in the Park Victory

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball program took a combined no-hitter into the eighth inning of Saturday’s 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Elon University at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Freshman Billy Sullivan IV threw 6.2 dazzling innings for the Blue Hens (24-22, 8-9 CAA) striking out seven Elon batters (28-19, 10-7) allowing just one run. Senior Colman Vila came on for Sullivan IV in the seventh and pitched the final two and one-third innings allowing just a soft well-placed single that alluded a trio of Delaware fielders.

Entrenched in a pitchers’ duel for a large majority of the game, the Blue Hens fell behind early Saturday afternoon as the Phoenix struck for a third inning run without the benefit of a hit.

Sullivan IV quickly rebounded in the fourth retiring the side in order. Leading off the home half of the fourth, junior Nick Pattenlifted his seventh home run of the season tying the game at one.

The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Delaware struck for a pair of runs. After Tyler Callender reached on an error and advanced to third on a two-out Calvin Scott single, freshman Jordan Hutchins roped a single into left centerfield that plated Callender. An Elon throwing error on the play allowed Scott to score all the way from first.

Armed with a lead for the first time, Sullivan IV returned to the mound for his seventh inning of work. After striking out the first two batters of the frame, the righty walked a batter prompting the pitching change. Vila shut the door in the inning striking out Elon’s Zach Evers.

Vila returned for the eighth and retired the lead-off hitter with a fly ball. On a 0-1 count, Elon SS Ryne Ogren lofted a single that fell for Elon’s lone hit.

The Delaware lefty returned for the top of the ninth and struck out the final two batters he faced securing the victory. Other key performances included Kyle Baker going 2-4 with a double, and Hutchins going 3-3 with the pivotal sixth-inning single.

Delaware will look to take the series from the Phoenix tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Freshman Chris Ludman will make his fourth consecutive Sunday start for the Blue Hens, while junior Ryan Conroy will take the ball for Elon.

Head coach Jim Sherman

“Billy put us on his back and carried us today, obviously preserving the no-hitter through his entire outing. It’s rare that you take a guy out who hasn’t allowed a hit into the seventh inning, but his pitch count was elevated. We want to be smart and protect him first and foremost. If he didn’t have the no-hitter going he wouldn’t have even gone out for the seventh. We tried to get him through that one last inning, but as soon as he gave up that last walk I knew it was time to get Vila in there. Like he has all year for us, Vila closed the door. We got a great performance from Sullivan and Miller behind the plate who called a great game. Then Hutchins delivered the big hit with two outs to get the go-ahead run. Tomorrow we need Chris [Ludman] to keep doing what he has been doing the last three outings. Hopefully, we can get a good six innings from him and then we’ll be in a position to win the game. We’re really happy with what Luddy has done up to this point, and he has a bright future as well. ”

On Hutchins:

“Some guys have a knack for getting that big hit, and Jordan is a guy for us who is proving that to be true. He does a great job of focusing in, in those key spots. He’s shown at a young stage of his career that he excels in those moments. The evidence is in the numbers. Hutchins has had many big two-out hits for us this season. Hopefully, that stays true for the rest of his career.”

On the leadership Vila and captain Nick Spadafino have provided:

“Those two guys are such a critical part of what we do both on the field as well as teaching our younger guys. Spadafino does such a good job of taking the time to talk with all of our younger guys about how to pitch in specific situations. Vila does the same thing. They’re both extremely experienced being fifth-year guys in our program, so they have a lot of knowledge. So those guys are critical not just as performers but also as leaders.”

Sullivan IV: "Last week wasn't my best outing so bouncing back today from that is huge for my confidence. I thought [Zack] Miller did a great job of calling the game today as coach Troy [O'Neal] allowed us to call our own game today for the first time which was fun. Today, my changeup was really working. I didn't have the best command of my fastball, so the changeup was huge. There are a few little things that I have to work on, but overall it was a great team win today. We were struggling a bit, so we really needed this one today. Jordan came up with a crucial hit and then Calvin had the heads up play to score that extra insurance run. Today was a just a great all-around game for us.

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Today's victory snapped a five-game CAA losing streak.
• Sullivan IV improves to 4-0 this season at Bob Hannah Stadium.
• The righty is now 3-0 this season against CAA foes at home. The freshman has allowed just five runs in his four CAA starts (25.2 innings), striking out 41.
• With his seven strikeouts today, Sullivan raised his season total to 75 which is fourth in the CAA.

Big Performances from Hinton, Sullivan IV Help Delaware Clinch CAA Appearance

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware baseball team swept a doubleheader from William & Mary Friday at Plumeri Park as Delaware picked up a 6-0 game one victory before taking the nightcap 6-5.

The victories coupled with losses by James Madison and Towson earned Delaware (27-23, 11-9 CAA) its sixth CAA Tournament spot in the last seven years.

In game one of the doubleheader, as junior Kyle Hinton threw a complete game two-hit shutout, while Billy Sullivan IV threw five strong innings in game two.

Hinton (6-5) struck out 13 William & Mary batters, throwing Delaware’s first complete game shutout since Ron Marinaccio went the distance firing a two-hit shutout against College of Charleston at the CAA Tournament (May 24) last season.

The Blue Hens struck first in the opener, as Kevin Mohollen and Kyle Baker opened the game with back-to-back singles. A Nick Patten sac-fly scored Mohollen for the first run of the afternoon.

After a scoreless first from Hinton, Delaware took a 2-0 lead on a Zack Miller solo homer. The Blue Hens made it 4-0 in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles from Tyler Callender and Calvin Scott. An RBI groundout from Baker made it 5-0 Delaware, giving Hinton all of the run support he needed.

In the bottom of the fifth, William & Mary (15-33, 3-16 CAA) recorded its first hit of the game, but a strikeout looking stranded a runner in scoring position.

The Delaware righty retired 12 of the final 13 batters, striking out nine of those batters. The victory was Hinton’s first since Apr. 13 against UNCW.

At the plate, Tyler Callender contributed three hits and an RBI while Baker and Mohollen each recorded multiple hits.

The Blue Hens completed the doubleheader sweep in game two as Sullivan IV (6-2) and senior James Meeker turned in strong performances on the mound. After taking care of the first five and striking out seven batters, Meeker pitched the next three innings striking out seven William & Mary batters.

Delaware again struck first in the nightcap, as Mohollen lifted a solo home run in the first to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless frame from Sullivan, freshman Jordan Hutchins walked and stole second with two out. With a runner in scoring position, Erik Bowren roped a single down the line to bring home Hutchins to extend Delaware's lead to 2-0.

The game remained 2-0 Delaware until the fourth when Hutchins singled home Scott to add a run. In the bottom of the fourth, Sullivan IV ran into a bit of trouble, as William & Mary cut the Delaware lead to 3-2 recording their first hit of the game. The UD lead was quickly increased in the fifth when Delaware added an unearned run.

Delaware and William & Mary traded scoreless frame until the seventh inning when Delaware increased its lead to 6-2 on a two-run homer by Callender. The Blue Hens kept the 6-2 advantage until the ninth when Colman Vila ran into a bit of trouble. After a pair of lead-off walks, the lefty recorded the first out on a strikeout. Vila got ahead in the count 1-2 on the next batter before eventually losing him to a walk. Representing the tying run, William & Mary second baseman Matt McDermott drove a three-run triple into left center.

With the tying run at third, Vila recovered nicely, striking out the next two batters to secure the victory.

In the second game, Hutchins went 3-4 with an RBI, while Mohollen scored twice.

Delaware and William & Mary close out the weekend set Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Freshman Chris Ludman is set to take the ball for Delaware.

Head coach Jim Sherman:
"I think sometimes pressure can be good for a team and I think you saw that today. We came out really focused at the plate and on the mound early today. Sometimes when your feet are held to the fire guys come through. I saw a lot of good pitching today throughout the entire 18 innings of baseball except for the little slipup in the ninth. The umpire's zone was a little bit tight and Vila walked some batters that allowed them to creep back into it. Vila then composed himself and was lights out the final two batters. Sullivan was a little bit under the weather as he's battling a dental issue, and we didn't want to really push him after five strong innings. I thought tonight was huge for Meeker who hit a bit of a rough patch there for a short time. The ball wasn't coming off his fingers really well, but I thought last outing at UMBC he found it. Tonight he was outstanding. His performance gave us a big boost tonight, but will also be important as we come down the stretch. Having him and Vila coming down the stretch of games is huge for our club. In the first game, I thought Hinton was outstanding and we got some big performances at the plate. Now that we've clinched these last four games really come down to seeding and seeing where we finish. It looks like Northeastern and College of Charleston are locked into those top two spots as of right now, but we want to play well here over the final four CAA games and see what could happen."

Kyle Hinton:
"Today my approach was similar to every other week. I was trying to fill up the zone and force the guys to put the ball in play because I have a good defense behind me. I had two outings where I struggled with my control so I made a couple of minor adjustments in my bullpen session this week. I thought [pitching] coach Troy [O'Neal] called a great game for me, so it ended up working out in the end. I've been working hard. The nice thing for me is I have the advantage of knowing I have Billy pitching behind me in game two. When you're throwing in game one there's not much pressure. With the way that our guys are swinging the bats, I'm just trying to give us a chance to win the game. It's huge for us to clinch the playoffs, but we're not satisfied. We want to win the rest of the games this season and enter the tournament with momentum. We learned last year that if you get in anything can happen."

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• With four CAA games remaining Delaware currently occupies fifth place in the conference. • UD out-hit William & Mary 24-5 today and recorded 30 strikeouts.
• The Hens recorded multiple strikeouts in 11 of the 18 innings today.
• Delaware improves to 1-5 this season in night games.
• The Blue Hens have swept all three doubleheaders they have played.
• Hinton struck out multiple batters in five innings today.
• After extending his hitting streak to 12 games, Baker took an 0-5 in the nightcap.
• Miller caught all 18 innings Friday despite the high temperatures.
• Sullivan IV brought his season strikeout total to 82. He needs just three more punchouts to match the freshman program record (85).
• Mohollen scored three times today and now has scored 43 runs this season. He needs just 55 runs to become the fourth player in school history to score 200 career runs.
• Villa struck out the side despite allowing three earned runs. He now has 51 strikeouts in 40 innings.
• The three earned runs snapped a 20 inning scoreless streak and raised his ERA to 1.58.

SUBJECT: Bats Awaken in 10-5 Victory over No. 6 Merrimack as Wildcats Stay Alive in Regional Tournament

DATE: May 18, 2018

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - - The offense came alive for the Wilmington University baseball team to stave off elimination in the 2018 NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament, 10-5, against sixth seeded Merrimack on Friday morning at Finnerty Field.

The runs came early and often for the Wildcats (35-20), as they put a four spot on the board in the bottom of the first and added five more runs in the bottom of the third. That allowed starter Zach Rumford to settle in and pitch into the seventh inning in keeping the Wildcats alive.

Rumford set the Warriors (31-21) down in order in the top of the first inning, and the bats didn’t waste any time to come alive. Christian Adorno hooked a ball over the head of the third baseman for a leadoff double. Max Carney moved Adorno up to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Kendall Small brought him in with a triple that snuck inside the first base bag and all the way into the corner in right. Nick Grant followed with a hard hit single into center, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with one out.

Brooks Ryan kept the lineup moving, lacing a ball to the gap in right center, racing all the way around for an RBI triple and the 3-0 lead. Frank Nigro chopped one to a drawn in shortstop, but Ryan was moving on contact and scored without a throw to put the Wildcats ahead, 4-0.

The Warriors reached on a two-out error in the top of the third, but Rumford set Merrimack down quietly in the inning, allowing the offense to go to work once again.

Max Carney and Kendall Small singled to star the inning. Nick Grant followed with an RBI single to right and Brooks Ryan was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs in the inning, also ending the day for the Merrimack starter.

The ball got away from the Merrimack catcher on a chopper to third, allowing one Wildcat to score and keep the bases loaded. Dakota Graham made it hurt with a two-run single to right center, giving the Wildcats an 8-0 lead. Brett Nowell capped the inning with a long fly ball to right, allowing Frank Nigro to trot home on the sacrifice fly.

Merrimack finally got on the board with a one out double in the fifth, but Rumford induced a pop up and picked up a strikeout to escape further damage.

Kyle Fries got in on the extra base hit parade in the sixth, chasing Brett Nowell all the way around from first with a double to the gap in right center before getting caught at third on the play.

The Warriors threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, ending the afternoon for Zach Rumford. But reliever Zach Frederick picked up Rumford, as he induced a 4-6-3 inning ending double play to keep the Warriors off the board in the inning.

Merrimack scored a single run in the eighth and loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Justin Mears kept them to two runs before ending the game, 10-5.

Kendall Small went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored while Nick Grant batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. The Wildcats scored their 10 runs on 10 hits in the game.

Rumford improved to 8-3 on the year by going 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play on Saturday morning in another elimination game at 11:00 a.m. at Finnerty Field. They will play the loser of No. 1 New Haven and No. 4 Southern New Hampshire.

SUBJECT: Two Home Tournaments Highlight 2018 Delaware Volleyball Schedule

DATE: May 30, 2018

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team will host two tournaments and play seven matches against teams that participated in the postseason a year ago as the Blue Hens announced their 2018 schedule on Wednesday.

The Blue Hens kick off their slate by hosting the Delaware Invitational on Aug. 24-26, including the season opener against Morgan State at the Bob Carpenter Center on Aug. 24. Following a home match against La Salle the following day, UD wraps up the tournament on Aug. 26 by taking on Villanova.

Following a trip to the FIU Tournament on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 that features matches against the host Panthers along with Savannah State and Chicago State, Delaware returns home to host the Blue Hen Invitational on Sept. 7-8. UD will face Marist and Grand Canyon on the first day of the tournament, before battling Columbia on the second day.

The Blue Hens wrap up non-conference action on Sept. 14-15 at the Stony Brook Invitational, where they will face Bryant and Colgate along with the host Seawolves. Colgate participated in last year’s inaugural NIVC postseason tournament.

Delaware will then play 16 consecutive Colonial Athletic Association matches, facing the other eight conference opponents home and away. The league slate kicks off at Towson, another NIVC participant in 2017, on Sept. 21, before a match at defending CAA champion James Madison two days later.

The Blue Hens host Charleston, which captured the league’s regular season title and also advanced to the NCAA Tournament, in their conference home opener on Sept. 28, and will then welcome UNCW to Newark on Sept. 30. Delaware heads back on the road the following weekend, travelling to William & Mary on Oct. 5 and to Elon on Oct. 7.

The Blue Hens then enjoy a four-match homestand over the next two weeks, hosting Northeastern (Oct. 12), Hofstra (Oct. 14), William & Mary (Oct. 19) and Elon (Oct. 21). UD plays its final four road matches during the following two weekends at UNCW (Oct. 26), Charleston (Oct. 28), Northeastern (Nov. 2) and Hofstra (Nov. 4).

Delaware concludes its regular season with home matches against Towson on Nov. 9 and James Madison on Nov. 11. The six-team CAA Tournament will be held on Nov. 15-18 in Charleston, S.C.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season,” said head coach Sara Matthews, who begins her second season leading the Blue Hens this fall. “One of the best aspects of our 2018 schedule is we have six more home matches. It was tough last season being on the road the first five weekends so we are really looking forward to hosting two home tournaments. With six newcomers joining our team this fall, our schedule will allow us a chance to get in quality competition while working on integrating them into our team system. Our preseason schedule should prepare us nicely for the start of CAA play.”

“We’re very excited for the opportunity that this season’s schedule is going to afford us,” Barroqueiro said. “With an out-of-conference slate that features some of the top programs in the country & perennial NCAA Tournament teams, we will be tested and very prepared for the challenge of CAA play. The schedule, which features seven home matches at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium, begins with three consecutive road matches at Rutgers (Aug. 17), Seton Hall (Aug. 19) and George Washington (Aug. 23).

Delaware opens the home schedule with a three-match homestand against Monmouth (Aug. 26), Lafayette (Aug. 31) and UMass (Sept. 2). Delaware Men's Soccer Announces 2018 Schedule

NEWARK, Del. --The University of Delaware men’s soccer program and head coach Ian Hennessy announced the program’s 2018 schedule Friday morning.

The 16-match schedule features four matchups against NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago, including three-time defending College Cup Champions, Stanford. Exciting non-conference matchups are scheduled against the ACC, BIG EAST, Ivy League and MAC.

“This year’s schedule will be one of the toughest we’ve had and should help us boast one of the strongest RPI’s in the country. We will challenge some of the best of the Pac-12, ACC, Ivy League, MAC and Big East conferences. In addition to being great programs, these schools are among our nation’s finest academic institutions. The non-conference slate will prepare us for another very strong CAA in 2018. The squad has been to three of the last four CAA championships including three finals, so I believe there is enough quality, particularly with a strong senior class, to compete favorably once again. I know the players are excited.”

Delaware opens the 2018 campaign with a four-match homestand against Villanova (Aug. 24), Pitt (Aug. 27), Seton Hall (Sept. 1) and Princeton (Sept. 5).

UD hits the road for the first time, heading to the west coast for a road-swing at California (Sept. 14) and Stanford (Sept. 16), before returning home for its first Colonial Athletic Association match against Charleston (Sept. 22).

CAA play continues with a matchup at James Madison (Sept. 26) before the Blue Hens head to West Virginia (Sept. 29) and Elon (Oct. 3). The Hens return to Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium for a Saturday night matchup with Hofstra (Oct. 6) before hitting I-95 for a short trip to Drexel (Oct. 10).

William & Mary visits Newark on Oct. 13, before the Blue Hens travel to UNCW (Oct. 20). Delaware closes out both its CAA and home schedule against Northeastern (Oct. 27) before concluding the regular season at Penn (Oct. 30).

The Blue Hens will look to return to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons by winning the CAA Tournament (Nov. 3-11). Delaware returns 16 members including CAA first-team honoree John Schroeder and senior goalkeeper Todd Morton.
