NEWARK, Del.

Brown, a former National Football  League player who starred for Rocco at Liberty University, will serve as offensive quality control assistant; Reber, a four-year standout at VMI who was on Rocco’s staff at Richmond in 2016, will serve as defensive quality control assistant; and Gund, a three-time captain for Rocco as a standout player at Richmond, will be the team’s recruiting quality control assistant.

The three will have responsibilities supporting the Blue Hens’ full-time staff in various areas, including recruiting, practice preparation, and film breakdown.

A native of Charlottesville, Va., Brown enjoyed an outstanding career at Liberty University in 2007-10 where he played quarterback and wide receiver for Rocco and led the Flames to four straight Big South Conference titles. He was a three-time All-Big South selection and was selected as the Big South Player of the Year in 2009 as a receiver and 2010 as a quarterback.

Brown, who earned his degree in finance with a minor in coaching from Liberty in 2011, then moved on to a three-year career in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joined the coaching ranks in 2016, serving under head coach Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan as an offensive analyst and running backs assistant.

Reber (pronounced “ree-burr”), a native of Huntersville, N.C., attended the Virginia Military Institute where he earned his degree in applied mathematics in 2013. He was a standout linebacker for four years for the Keydets in 2009-13 and earned All-Big South honors as a senior when he collected 82 tackles and recovered three fumbles. He led the team in tackles each of his final two years and finished his tenure at VMI with 212 career tackles.

Coming from a football family, Reber’s grandfather served as a pro and college coach for 45 years and his father played college football at Arkansas. Wes began his college coaching career in 2016 at Richmond as a defensive intern and quality control assistant and helped lead the Spiders to a 10-4 record and an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal berth.

Gund, a native of Washington, D.C., enjoyed an All-American career as a four-year starting offensive lineman at the University of Richmond under Rocco in 2011-14. SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball's Six-Game Winning Streak Halted in Loss to UMass Lowell
DATE: March 13, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware baseball squad had its six-game win streak snapped Monday as the Blue Hens dropped a tight 6-5 affair to UMass Lowell at Bob Hannah Stadium.
After producing a program record 15+ runs in five consecutive games, the River Hawks held the potent Delaware lineup to one-third of that run output.
Delaware rallied back from a 6-1 deficit to pull to within one run but couldn’t complete the rally as they went three up and three down in the ninth inning.
“For the first three or four innings we were not as sharp as we have been,” head coach Jim Sherman said. “Over the final half of the game I thought we woke up and played well. [Nick] Spadafino pitched exceptionally well for us, going 4.2 innings with the eight strikeouts. That’s clearly the best he’s thrown all year. It was a tough way to end it on a check-swing strikeout in the ninth, but I’m happy our kids battled back.”
The Blue Hens (8-7) dug a whole for themselves early, allowing UMass Lowell (7-6) to strike for a run in the first and three runs in the second inning.
Delaware struck back with a run in the bottom of the second, but errors by shortstop Jeremy Ake and catcher Brian Mayer in the fourth inning allowed UMass Lowell to add another two runs, chasing Blue Hens starter Matt Hornich from the game.
The Hens clawed back into the game, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the River Hawks lead to just one. Kevin Mohollen delivered a two-run double in the fourth while Calvin Scott and Brian Mayer delivered run-scoring singles in the fifth.
In the seventh, the Hens received back-to-back singles from Doug Trimble and CAA Player of the Week Nick Patten to open the frame. But the Hens weren’t able to get a run across as Ake popped up and Scott smoked a ground ball to third base that resulted in an inning-ending double play.
The Blue Hens received great efforts from co-captains Nick Spadafino and Ron Marinaccio out of the bullpen.
Spadafino pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight while retiring the final 14 batters he faced. Marinaccio pitched a scoreless ninth inning to keep the Hens in the game.
Delaware returns to action this Thursday night when the Blue Hens head to State College, Pa. for a home-and-home four-game set with the Big 10’s Penn State Nittany Lions. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. both Thursday and Friday.
The Hens then return home to conclude the series with Penn State with afternoon games on Saturday and Sunday at Hannah Stadium.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Patten was named this week's CAA Player of the Week. The first baseman batted .500 with three home runs and 13 RBI during the Hens six game-winning streak. He also scored 18 runs and stole three bases. Patten is the first Blue Hen to earn that honor since Kevin Milley last May
• In Monday’s game, the Blue Hens produced 10+ hits for the sixth consecutive game
• The Hens .328 team batting average is tied with James Madison for best in the CAA
• Delaware has scored a league-high 133 runs this season. The Blue Hens also lead the CAA in on-base percentage (.436), runs batted in (121), and walks (90)
• Delaware ranks fourth in the NCAA in on-base percentage and triples per game, sixth in runs per game, and ninth in team batting average
• Ake continues to swing the bat well for Delaware. He extended his hitting streak to eight games and is now batting .412 through the first 15 games this season. The shortstop has recorded at least one hit in 13 games and has five multiple-hit games
• Ake (2nd), Mohollen (8th) and Trimble (9th) all rank in the top 10 in CAA in batting average.

SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball Slugger Nick Patten Selected Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week
DATE: March 13, 2017
RICHMOND, Va
. -- University of Delaware sophomore first baseman Nick Patten has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week Monday for his performance last week.
Patten (Butler, Pa./IMG Academy) posted a .500 batting average with three home runs, 18 runs scored, and 13 runs batted in during Delaware’s six game winning streak last week.
“Nick had about as good a week as I have seen here at Delaware,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “What’s ironic about Patten winning the award is that Jeremy Ake had probably just as good a week. Obviously those two were great candidates to win this week. Nick winning this award is great for our program and well-deserved because he works very hard.”
The first baseman raised his average to .333 for the season due to his performance. Patten helped the Blue Hens defeat Delaware State, Rider and sweep Wagner this past weekend.
Patten is the first Delaware Blue Hen to win a CAA Player of the Week award since Kevin Milley was named CAA Pitcher of the Week last May.
Other CAA honorees included James Madison's Colten Harlow (Co-Pitcher of the Week), Michael Adams of Towson (Co-Pitcher of the Week), and Sean Mellen (Freshman of the Week) from Northeastern.

SUBJECT: Walters’ Career Day, Strong Pitching Propels Delaware Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of Penn State
DATE: March 18, 2017
NEWARK, Del
. -- Behind a pair of pitchng gems from Brandon Walter and Nick Spadafino, the University of Delaware baseball team swept a doubleheader from Penn State Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware took the opener by a 6-1 score thanks to Walter's masterpiece and a five-run seventh inning. In the nightcap, Spadafino's heroics and Doug Trimble's third home run of the season gave UD the 5-0 triumph.
"Today was a great display of pitching from our whole team," head coach Jim Sherman said. "The performances this afternoon were prime examples of the kind of performances we can produce when pitching well. [Brandon] Walter's start in the first game is as good a pitching performance as I have seen in my 31-year coaching career. His stuff was electric and all four pitches were working well. We got a great outing from Spadafino and the bullpen and got some timely hits. Overall, it was a really great day for our club."
In the opener, Walter, a sophomore left-hander, threw eight shutout innings, striking out a career-high 17 batters. Walter walked one and allowed just a one-out seventh inning single.
The Delaware native (Hodgson Vo-Tech HS) retired the side in order in every inning but the seventh and struck out the side in the fifth and eighth innings. Walter struck out multiple batters in every inning but the first and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
"I felt pretty good today and all four pitches were working" Walter said. "Coach Troy [O'Neal] and (catcher) Brian Mayer called a great game and the guys behind me played great defense. I got a couple of big plays from Diaz (Nardo) and the offense came alive late. Today's performances from the whole staff, giving up just one run against a solid Big Ten team, is huge heading into CAA play at James Madison next weekend. Hopefully we can translate the performances from today into tomorrow and next weekend."
Offensively, the Blue Hens (10-7) scored a run in the second on an RBI groundout from Diaz Nardo before adding five insurance runs in the seventh.
The seventh inning was highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles from Kevin Mohollen and designated hitter Doug Trimble.
In the second game Delaware received more great pitching as Spadafino pitched six shutout innings, allowing just a pair of singles in the fourth inning. The righty struck out five and walked just one batter.
"Spadafino is starting to come full-circle," Sherman added. "He's fully figured out his release point, what all of his pitches need to do and how to make adjustments when things don't completely work out. His growth and maturity are finally starting to shine. I'm really happy that the results are coming because he's worked really hard."
At the plate, Delaware scored unearned runs in the second and fifth innings to enjoy a 2-0 lead after five.
In the second, Trimble rocketed a ground ball toward Penn State (6-10) third baseman Christian Helsel, who after making a nice pick, threw the ball away.
The throwing error allowed Trimble to reach second base safely. After a wild pitch advanced him to third, first baseman Nick Patten reached first safely on an infield hit that scored Trimble.
In the fifth, Mohollen singled with two outs and stole second base. Blue Hens catcher Nick Tierno hit a sky-high fly ball toward centerfield that Nittany Lions centerfielder Jordan Bowersox dropped.
The play, which should have been the third and final out of the inning, allowed Mohollen to score the Blue Hens' second run.
The Blue Hens added a run on a safety squeeze in the seventh before Trimble lined a two-run home run to right field in the eighth.
The Hens received three shutout innings from versatile lefty Matt Hornich to close the game, earning Hornich his first career save.
The Blue Hens are now 8-2 during this homestand and have won 10 out of their last 13 games.
Penn State and Delaware will conclude the three-game set Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Senior left-hander Kevin Milley will take the ball for Delaware while Cole Bartles will pitch for Penn State.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• UD pitchers allowed just one run and seven hits over the 18 innings played on Saturday
• As a team, the Blue Hens struck out 25 Penn State hitters in the two games
• The Blue Hens improved to 6-1 when they hit at least one home run.
• The Blue Hens are now 6-2 when they score the first run of the game
• Walter’s 17 strikeouts are believed to be the second most in program history. In 1959 Al Neiger struck out a program best 21 batters against Swarthmore.
• Walter’s eight inning performances marks the first time a Blue Hen starter has finished eight innings. He dropped his ERA to 1.97 with today’s eight shutout innings.
• Spadafino has now thrown 11.1 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
• Mohollen now has a team-high nine games with at least two hits
• Trimble has a 13-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit in every game except the second game against Pitt
• Four Blue Hens (Trimble, Calvin Scott, Nardo and Jeremy Ake) all have reached base in 10 consecutive games or more

Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 19, 2017) –Delaware State scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning and Darien Ragins struck out the side with runners at second and third and none out in the bottom of the ninth to lead Delaware State to a 5-4 win over Norfolk State in a nail-biting MEAC opener at Marty Miller Field this evening.

The Hornets trailed 4-1 before scoring four times in the top of the ninth inning. The big blow in the inning was a one-out, three-run double by Darnel Maisonet (below) to give DSU a 5-4 lead.

In Norfolk State’s half of the ninth, Delaware State reliever Terry Godfrey allowed a single and a walk to the first two batters. Ragins then entered the game and threw a wild pitch to advance the NSU runners to third and second with none out.

Ragins then bore down to strike out Chase Anderson looking, Denathan Dukes swinging and pinch hitter Stephen Baughan swinging to strand the runners on base and secure the win for the Hornets.

The save was Ragins’ first of the season and made a winner of Godfrey (1-1), who pitched two innings in relief after DSU starter Lane DeLeon threw the first six innings. DeLeon allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out three and walking two.

Norfolk State opened the scoring with two runs off DeLeon in the bottom of the fourth.

The Hornets finally got on the board when first baseman Ciaran Devenney drew a bases loaded walk with one out in the top of the eighth inning. Norfolk State turned a double play to avoid further DSU damage in the inning.

The Spartans added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to stretch their lead to 4-1.

Delaware State scored its first ninth-inning run when Jaylen Zielecki drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on the first of two Norfolk State errors in the inning.

Maisonet had four of Delaware State’s eight hits in the game (4-for-5). He has five hits and four RBI in his last six at bats to raise his season average to .375.

Hornet second baseman Kwestin Smith was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored in the contest to up his on-base percentage to .436 for the season.

Delaware State and NSU are scheduled to wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Monday. Game one is set for 12 p.m. at Miller Field in Norfolk.

Dover, Del. (Mar. 19, 2017) --- Hannah Shields and Jess Shalongo threw complete games, while Dani Velez and Micaela Cummings drove in two runs each to lead Delaware State to a doubleheader sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore in the MEAC opener for both teams today. The Hornets won each game 3-2.

In the opener, Shields (1-7) allowed five hits and two runs, striking out six and walking two in posting her first collegiate win.

Delaware State scored all of its runs in the third inning. Jordan Casey walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third with some heads-up base running on a bunt by Sabrina Quarles. Cummings followed with a fly ball that was dropped by MDES right fielder MacKenzie Brown. Casey scored the first run of the game on the play and Cummings advanced to second. After a single by Jasmine Melgoza put runners on third and second, Dani Velez singled in both with a hit to right field to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.

MDES answered in the top of the fourth when Sara Whaley singled in two runs to cut DSU’s lead to 3-2.

The Hawks had two base runners in the fifth, but one was cut down by Hornet catcher Desiree Moreno while trying to steal second.

Shield did not allow a hit over the last two innings and retired the Hawks in order in the seventh to clinch the win for the Hornets, who snapped an 11-game losing streak.

Velez had two of DSU’s six hits in the opener.

In game two, Shalongo (1-2) allowed just four hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out eight to collect her first win of the season.

Aided by two Delaware State errors, MDES scored first with a run in the top of the third inning.

Hornet right fielder Sabrina Quarles got the run back with her first career home run in the bottom of the third, a solo shot over the fence in left field.

Delaware State took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Vanessa Washington started the rally with a one-out single. Pinch runner Kayleigh Berry stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Berry then scampered home on a wild pitch by MDES starter Erin Hallman to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. After back-to-back walks to Casey and Quarles, DSU stretched its lead to 3-1 when Cummings chased home Casey on a two-out single in the inning.

MDES pulled to within 3-2 on a run in the sixth, but Shalongo got out of the inning without further damage and retired the side in the seventh to nail down the win.

Jasmine Melgoza had two of DSU’s seven hits in the nightcap.

The Hornets improved to 3-15 overall this season, while UMES fell to 2-10.

DSU returns to action with a three-game MEAC series at Norfolk State next weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sat. (Mar. 25) and wrap-up the series with a single game on Sun. (Mar. 26).

“Overall I’m very pleased with how we competed today. We had our chances in doubles, but couldn’t pull out the tiebreaker at No. 3. Blaise and Laurenz really stepped it up with elite doubles play at No. 1. In singles, we were right there with them until the end, but Villanova played with more confidence in the big points. Congratulations to Laurenz and Dom for pulling out big singles wins.”

SUBJECT: Career Day for Delaware's Brandon Walter Earns Him CAA, National Acclaim in Baseball
DATE: March 20, 2017
RICHMOND, Va.
-- For the second consecutive week a University of Delaware baseball standout has earned a Colonial Athletic Association honor.

Blue Hen sophomore left-hander Brandon Walter (Hodgson Vo-Tech/New Castle, Del.) was named CAA Pitcher of the Week for his performance this past weekend against Penn State.

In addition to the conference award, the lefty was also named one of eight Collegiate Baseball National Players of the Week at the NCAA Division I level.

Walter took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed just one hit and no runs in Delaware's 6-1 win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon. His 17 strikeouts are believed to be the second best total in program history behind Al Neiger, who struck out 21 batters against Swarthmore College in 1959.

The award is the first of Walter’s career, and he is the first UD pitcher to earn the CAA honor since Kevin Milley in May of 2016.

The pitcher shared the weekly CAA awards with Casey Golden of UNCW (Player of the Week) and Fox Semones of James Madison (Rookie of the Week).

The Blue Hens return to the diamond this weekend when they open up CAA play at James Madison on Friday, March 24, at 6 p.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Attackman Charlie Kitchen Named CAA Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
DATE: March 20, 2017
RICHMOND, Va.
-- For the second time this season, high-scoring University of Delaware men’s lacrosse freshman Charlie Kitchen has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week.
Kitchen, a native of Marlton, N.J. (St. Augustine Prep High School), was honored for his efforts in Delaware’s 12-7 victory over Saint Joseph’s Saturday as he netted three goals to lead the Hens to their fifth win in the last six outings.
Delaware has now had a player earn CAA weekly honors five times this year with Kitchen being named Rookie of the Week twice, Andrew Romagnoli earning Player of the Week laurels twice, and freshman Matt DeLuca being selected Rookie of the Week once.
Kitchen scored three goals vs. Saint Joseph’s to record his second hat trick of the season and also scooped up two groundballs to help the Hens snap a personal three-game losing streak to the Hawks.
Kitchen ranks No. 2 on the squad in scoring with 32 points on 21 goals and 11 assists and has scored at least two points in all nine of his games this season, a UD record. He is one of only four freshmen in the nation at the NCAA Division I level who has scored at least two points in every game this year.
In addition to Kitchen, Hofstra goalkeeper Jack Concannon and Massachusetts attackman Tyler Bogar were also honored by the CAA Monday as they shared CAA Player of the Week honors.
Delaware (6-3), which has already surpassed the season win total for both the 2015 and 2016 seasons, returns to action this Saturday, March 25, when the Hens host No. 1 ranked (Maverik/Inside Lacrosse Poll) Rutgers at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.

Tue, March 21, 2017
Dover, Del. (Mar. 21, 2017) --- Jaylen Zielecki smacked a three-run homer and Tommy Jordan hit a solo shot to lead Delaware State to a 4-2 victory over La Salle at Soldier Field this afternoon.

The Hornets won for the third time in four games to improve to 6-9 this season. DSU is also 2-0 at Soldier Field this season.

La Salle dropped its third straight game to fall to 2-15.

The Explorers scored first when Zach Wright hit a towering home run over the fence in left-center field off Delaware starter Darnel Maisonet in the top the second inning.

La Salle opened up a 2-0 lead when Kevin McGowan tripled off Hornet reliever Garrett Coverdale, chasing home Yan Carlo Rivera with one out in the fifth.

Delaware State failed to get a runner on base off La Salle starter Matt Holt, who retired all 12 batters he faced, six by strikeout, in four innings.

The Hornets immediately took advantage of Holt’s departure to get their offense going.

Freshman catcher Ciaran Devenney led off the DSU fifth with a single up the middle off La Salle reliever Jackson Ray for the Hornets first base runner of the game. Fellow rookie Jared Gillis followed with a double to left center to put Delaware State runners at third and second. Zielecki then launched his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to left center, to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead.

Delaware State added an insurance run in the eighth when Jordan, a freshman shortstop, hit his first collegiate home run to left center.

Hornet reliever Terry Godfrey kept La Salle off the board in the seventh and eighth innings.

DSU closer Darrien Ragins gave up a lead-off double in the ninth, but retired the next three batters to earn his third save of the season.

The Hornets are back in action on Wed. (Mar. 22) with a home contest against Navy. Game time is 3:00 p.m. at Soldier Field.

SUBJECT: Delaware Softball Opens Home Season With Two Dramatic Walkoff Wins Over Villanova
DATE: March 21, 2017
NEWARK, Del
. -- The University of Delaware softball team opened its home season in style on Tuesday afternoon by posting a pair of dramatic walkoff wins, 5-4 and 6-4, over Villanova at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who improved to 8-12 on the year, extended their winning streak to six games heading into this weekend’s Colonial Athletic Association opening series against Towson.
Villanova, which dropped to 9-8 on the season, scored a run in the top of the first during the opener before adding three more runs in the fifth. However Mattie Nuccio singled home Alyshia Dellatore to put Delaware on the board during the bottom half, and after another run scored on a Wildcats error, Giovanna Kolofer delivered a two-run single to knot the contest at 4-4.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh when Nuccio led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leanna Gearhart, and scored on Kolofer’s game-winning double to centerfield.
Jordan Cargile picked up her fifth win of the year after firing two scoreless innings of relief while Gearhart, Kolofer, Dellatore and Nuccio each had two hits in the victory.
Villanova again jumped in front during the nightcap when Lauren Herschberg led off the game with a home run, but Delaware rallied back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Kolofer singled home Gearhart with the first run of the frame, while Mariah Kondravy doubled home Kolofer to put the Blue Hens on top. Anna Steinmetz then laced a triple to rightfield to chase home pinch runner Morgan Schroll, before she scored on an RBI single by Devon Steiner.
The Wildcats immediately responded in the top of the sixth when Brittany Husk smoked a bases clearing double off the fence to make it a 4-4 game, but in the bottom of the seventh Kolofer doubled with one out before Kondravy crushed a pitch over the wall in centerfield to set off the Blue Hen celebration.
Cargile went the distance in the circle to earn her second victory of the day, while Kolofer finished with three hits and Kondravy knocked home three.
Game Notes:
• Delaware’s six-game winning streak is the longest since a seven-game streak from Mar. 26-Apr. 6, 2016
• The Blue Hens swept Villanova for the second consecutive year
• Kondravy now has 21 career home runs, two shy of the school record
• Kolofer finished 5 of 8 at the plate and extended her hitting streak to eight games
• Steinmetz’s triple was the first of her career
• Nuccio, who went 2 for 3 in both contests, posted consecutive multi-hit games for the first time in her career
• Wednesday's home game vs. Lehigh has been postponed due to expected high winds and cold temperature

SUBJECT: Late First Half Surge Propels Wilmington Women’s Lacrosse Past Nyack 22-12, to Open CACC Play

DATE: March 21, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Using a late first half surge, the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team toppled Nyack, 22-12, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Tuesday at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (3-5, 1-0 CACC) scored seven of the last eight goals of the first half to distance themselves from the Warriors (0-7, 0-1 CACC) in the first conference game of the season for both teams.

Nyack cut the deficit to 4-3 with 18:31 showing on the clock in the first half, but the Wildcats surged ahead with four straight goals to distance themselves. The Wildcats then tallied the final three goals of the half to head into the break leading 11-4.

The Warriors tried to get back into the game with back-to-back goals early in the second half, but the Wildcats answered with another 5-0 run to put a clamp on any such comeback. The Wildcats led 17-6 with 16:33 left in regulation.

Nyack scored five of the next six goals to close the margin, but it was too little too late as the Wildcats finished off the game by scoring four of the final five marks, including Mikailla Spencer’s first career goal to cap the scoring.

La’Dae Boykin led the charge with seven goals for the Wildcats, adding an assist for eight points. Three of her goals, as well as her lone assist, came in the first half to set the tone. Megan Card also tallied eight points, scoring six goals while adding two assists. She scored four of her goals in the second half to stave off any Warrior comeback.

Lashay Ross secured a hat trick as well with three goals while Shawna Chopko and Alexis Olsen chipped in with two goals each. Spencer also led the team with five ground balls and five draw controls while Ross and Zameria Jones picked up two caused turnovers.

Maddie Hurm recorded six saves for the win while Alexandria Bisson made nine stops in goal for the Warriors.

The 22 goals are tied for the second most in a game in program history. The last time the team scored at least 22 goals was in the CACC Tournament against Chestnut Hill in 2015. The team scored 23 goals at Holy Family in 2009 and against at West Virginia Wesleyan in 2012 to set the mark.

The Wildcats will look to make it three wins in a while when they travel to Post for another CACC game on Sunday. The opening draw in Waterbury, Connecticut is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Kutztown Uses a Ninth Inning Run To Take 2-1 Victory from Wilmington Baseball

DATE: March 21, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - A ninth inning wild pitch sent Kutztown to a 2-1 nonconference victory over the Wilmington University baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Although a combined 17 pitchers were used on Tuesday, the game was an old fashioned pitcher’s dual as neither team could break through. Each team scored a single run in its half of the sixth inning before Kutztown (9-7) capitalized on an opportunity in the top of the ninth.

The Golden Bears got on the board first in the top of the sixth inning, utilizing a leadoff triple. Zach Rumford was able to get the first out of the inning via a strikeout, but couldn’t keep the run off the board as the Golden Bears went ahead, 1-0, with an RBI groundout.

The Wildcats (8-6) answered right back in the home half of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Mike Annone singled to the rally before Kendall Small and Lance Gilbert walked. Nick Macey hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at 1-1, but the Wildcats couldn’t take advantage any further.

Wilmington left runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning but couldn’t get a runner home. The Wildcats went quietly in the eighth and ninth innings to drop the contest.

Kutztown put runners on first and third with one out in the ninth before a walk loaded the bases. Noah Latshaw came on and picked up a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but a wild pitch allowed the eventual game-winning run to scamper home.

Rocky Ferrier, Julian Kurych, and Annone collected the Wildcats’ three hits on Tuesday, while six Golden Bears accounted for the team’s six hits.

Micky Foytik was saddled with the loss for the Wildcats while Doug Conrad picked up the win with two scoreless frames for the Golden Bears. Nick Grant tossed two scoreless innings in the start before Brad Scull added two scoreless innings as well.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Friday when they play Felician in a doubleheader. It is scheduled for on the road, but the location has not been nailed down as the northeast is still trying to recover from Winter Storm Stella. SUBJECT: Big Innings Propel James Madison Past Delaware 12-8 in CAA Baseball Opener
DATE: March 24, 2017
HARRISONBURG, Va.
-- The University of Delaware baseball squad dropped its Colonial Athletic Association opener 12-8 to James Madison Friday night at Veterans Memorial Park.

The host Dukes (16-5, 1-0 CAA) scored six first-inning runs and added multiple runs in the fifth and seventh to defeat the Blue Hens (11-8, 0-1 CAA).
The teams will play their second game of the three-game series Saturday at 4 pm followed by the series finale Sunday at 2 pm.

“Tonight was a disappointing way to start CAA play,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “As a team, we just did not perform well in any of the phases. Now we need to turn the page and get ready for a bounce back effort tomorrow afternoon.”
After allowing six first-inning runs, Delaware starter Brandon Walter settled down over the next three innings, allowing the Hens to make a mini rally. In the third inning the Blue Hens scored four runs behind three consecutive singles from Doug Trimble, Nick Patten, and Jeremy Ake.
After the teams traded zeros in the fourth, the Blue Hens tied the game at six in the fifth, receiving solo home runs from Patten and Diaz Nardo.
The game did not stay tied for long, as JMU would strike for three runs of its own in the bottom half, aided by a pair of errors, to chase Walter. The Dukes added a single run in the sixth, and two runs in the seventh to enjoy a 12-6 lead heading into final frame of the game.
In the ninth, the Blue Hens received back-to-back singles from Nick Tierno and Jordan Glover. After a wild pitch, Patten grounded out, scoring Tierno. UD later added another run on another RBI single by Ake before Kevin Kelly recorded the final out.

Offensively, the Blue Hens received multiple hits from Tierno and Trimble, in addition to the home runs from Patten and Nardo.

Nick Spadafino is scheduled to take the mound Saturday for the Hens while Colton Harlow will pitch for the Dukes.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware produced 10 hits or more for the 10th time this season.
• The Blue Hens fell to 6-2 when they hit at least one home run.
• Five Blue Hens starters are batting at least .300 or better this season.
• Trimble has a 14-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit in every game but one this year. He recorded his ninth multiple-hit game this season.
• Nardo, Mohollen, Trimble, and Calvin Scott have all reached base in 10 consecutive games.

SUBJECT: Delaware Softball Drops 12-3 Decision To Towson in CAA Opener
DATE: March 24, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware softball team opened its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a 12-3 loss to Towson Friday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The day got off to a promising start for the Blue Hens (8-13, 0-1 CAA) as Giovanna Kolofer singled in the bottom of the first inning and one batter later Anna Steinmetz belted a two-run homer to rightcenter.
However the Tigers (10-13, 1-0 CAA) quickly responded with five runs in the top of the second to take control. Caroline Reid delivered a bases loaded double to drive home three runs, while Madison Wilson contributed a two-run double later in the frame.
Towson added two more runs in the top of the third on RBI singles by Nicole Stockinger and Dylan Jarvis, before UD shortstop Leanna Gearhart drilled a solo homer over the scoreboard in rightfield during the bottom half to make it a 7-3 game.
The score remained that way until the top of the seventh, when the Tigers tacked on five insurance runs on just three hits.
Megan Dejter improved to 4-7 for Towson after allowing three runs on six hits in a complete game effort, while Blue Hen starter Taylor Curran dropped to 1-1 as she gave up seven runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings of work.
Steinmetz finished 2 for 3 for Delaware while Gearhart, Kolofer, Mariah Kondravy and Ali Davis added a hit apiece.
The teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader.

SUBJECT: Delaware Softball Sweeps Towson, 5-4 and 4-0, To Take CAA Weekend Series
DATE: March 25, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- Mariah Kondravy delivered a walkoff single in the opener while Jordan Cargile fired a two-hit shutout in the nightcap as the University of Delaware softball team swept a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from Towson, 5-4 and 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who bounced back to take the weekend series after dropping the series opener to Towson, 12-3, on Friday, improved to 10-13 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Tigers dropped to 10-15 overall and 1-2 in league play following the pair of losses.
Towson jumped in front during the opener when Kendyl Scott and Madison Wilson delivered RBI singles in the top of the second inning, but Anna Steinmetz scored on a throwing error in the bottom half and Giovanna Kolofer singled home Mattie Nuccio the following frame to knot the contest at 2-2. Leanna Gearhart then doubled off the rightfield fence in the fourth inning, driving home Emily Neal and Nuccio to put Delaware on top, 4-2.
The Tigers got a run back in the sixth on consecutive doubles by Brook Miko and Nicole Stockinger, before Shelby Stracher drove home the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. But in the bottom of the eighth Nuccio legged out a one-out infield single, moved to second on a single by Gearhart, and scored the game-winning run when Kondravy laced a two-out single up the middle.
Cargile picked up her seventh win of the year after allowing four runs, three earned, in a complete game effort, while Nuccio finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
Delaware wasted little time in taking control of the nightcap, as an RBI single by Kondravy and a bases loaded walk to Neal in the opening frame gave the Blue Hens an early two-run cushion. Kondravy then doubled home Kolofer in the second inning, before she came around to score on a single by Steinmetz to put Delaware up four.
Cargile would do the rest, allowing just an infield single in the first inning an a double in the fifth while posting her first career shutout and improving to 8-7 on the season. Kondravy went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Gearhart added two hits and became UD’s career stolen base leader by swiping second base in the bottom of the sixth.
Game Notes:
• Delaware won the series from Towson for the first time since 2013
• Gearhart now has 67 career stolen bases, eclipsing the previous record of 66 set by Kim Griffin from 1989-92
• Nuccio posted the first three-hit game of her career in the opener
• The second game shutout was Delaware’s first since a 10-0 win at UNCW on Apr. 9, 2016
• Steinmetz extended her hitting streak to nine games
• The Blue Hens return to action next weekend for a three-game series at Drexel

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Knocks Off No. 1 Rutgers 13-9
DATE:  March 25, 2017
NEWARK, De
l. -- University of Delaware men’s lacrosse head coach Bob Shillinglaw has seen a lot of great wins in his 39 years as head coach of the Blue Hens - and this one has to rank up there with the best of them.
Delaware got nine goals from its starting midfield unit and freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca was nearly flawless in the nets as the Blue Hens posted their first-ever victory over a No. 1 ranked team with a 13-9 victory over Rutgers Saturday at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (7-3) got three goals each from starting midfielders Will Hirschmann, Steve DeLargy, and Trupert Ortlieb and DeLuca recorded a career-high 19 goals to earn the Milt Roberts Game Most Valuable Player award as Delaware knocked off a No. 1 ranked team for the first time in seven tries in school history. Delaware’s win over then No. 2 Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 was the previous highest-ranked opponent the Hens have defeated.
Rutgers (8-1) was off to its best start since 1955 and entered the game with its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the Maverik media poll. The Scarlet Knights were also ranked No. 3 in this week’s USILA Coaches poll.
“This is a game I think our guys will talking about 10 years from now,” said Shillinglaw, who will retire after this season, his fifth decade as a college head coach. “I am so happy for these guys, they are a great group of kids. This is their special moment and that’s what it should be all about. They are playing with a chip (on their shoulder) and we are getting after it. This is one of those games where you walk into the lockerroom before the game and you can see it in their eyes and you know you don’t have to say anything. They were focused and ready.”
After Rutgers scored the game’s first goal three minutes in, Delaware reeled off seven straight goals, including two each from Andrew Romagnoli and Hirschmann, and took a 7-2 advantage into halftime. But Rutgers refused to give in and scored four straight of their own in the third quarter and pulled to within 9-8 on a score by Kieran Mullins just 26 seconds into the final stanza.
From there, the Hens put it into another gear as they followed with four straight goals - two by Ortlieb - to take back control and cruise to the win, their sixth in the last seven games.
“I came out and I was seeing the ball well today,” said DeLuca, whose 19 saves were the most by a UD netminder since Tommy Scherr also turned back 19 shots vs. Lehigh in 2008. “It was a beautiful day, 70 degrees in March. All you can do is come and play as hard as you can. When you play the No. 1 team in the country, that can be a once in a lifetime thing. I can’t thank my defense enough. If I can come out and make the first couple of saves - which I was able to do today - it gets me going and I can pick it up from there.”
Romagnoli also dished out three assists for the Hens, freshman Charlie Kitchen added a goal and an assist, and freshman Crosby Matthews won 12 of 19 faceoff tries to pace the Hens.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• The game closed out a four-game homestand for the Blue Hens and was the final non-league game of the season. Delaware begins Colonial Athletic Association action next Saturday at UMass
• Romagnoli has now scored a point in 14 straight games since last season
• Kitchen has now scored at least two points in every game this season
• DeLuca improved to 6-1 in the nets since taking over the starting goalkeeper spot
• Rutgers was the first No. 1 team to visit Delaware Stadium since No. 1 Loyola knocked off the Hens 9-8 back in 2013
• Delaware wore pink uniforms in support of Breast Cancer Awareness

Sat, March 25, 2017
Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 25, 2017) --- Delaware State scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 4-3 win over Norfolk State in the first game of a MEAC North doubleheader today. The Spartans bounced back to take the nightcap 7-2.

In the opener, the Hornets trailed 3-0 before Khaliyah Flournory led off the fifth inning with her third career home run.

The score remained 3-1 until Delaware State rallied in the seventh. Jordan Casey singled to lead off the inning and moved to second when Sabrina Quarles followed with a base hit to center. The next batter, Miceala Cummings, singled to left center, scoring Casey to pull the Hornets to within 3-2. Quarles moved up the third base and Cummings to second when Jasmine Melgoza followed with a foul out to left. The next batter, Dani Velez, singled to right to score Quarles with the tying run and Cummings crossed the plate with the go-ahead run when Norfolk State committed an error on the play.

Norfolk State had the potential tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the seventh, but DSU’s Hannah Shields, pitching in relief, worked out of the jam to get the win (2-7).

Casey and Vanessa Washington had two hits each in the opener for DSU.

In game two, Delaware State scored in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Norfolk State scored four times in the bottom of the second and added three more runs in the fourth to take control of the game.

Hunter Halford was 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead NSU’s 10-hit attack in the nightcap.

Delaware State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. Melgoza doubled to lead off the game and scored on a two-out double by Mika Lumsden.

The Hornets opened up a 2-0 lead when Cummings smacked her team-best second home run of the season, a solo shot to center with one out in the second.

The Hornets (4-16; 3-1 MEAC) and Spartans (8-8; 1-1) will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at the Norfolk State softball complex.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Late Inning Heroics Push JMU Past Delaware

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware dropped a heartbreaker to James Madison University on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park, falling to Dukes 6-5 on a walk-off home run by Fox Semones.

“That was a great college baseball game result withstanding” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “It’s very tough to lose that game though, being just four outs away, but you have to tip your cap to JMU. We got outstanding pitching from [Nick] Spadafino and [Ron] Marinaccio. JMU just caught up with a pair of Marinaccio fastballs and that was the difference in the game. Going forward we’re going to have to find a way to win these games. I’m confident that next time we will.”

The Blue Hens (11-9, 0-2 CAA) enjoyed leads of 2-0 and 5-3 in the ball game, but closer Ron Marinaccio allowed home runs in the eighth and ninth innings to give the Dukes (17-5, 2-0 CAA) the walk-off victory.

In the second inning designated hitterDoug Trimble hit a lead-off single, beforeNick Patten singled him to third. The next Delaware hitter Jeremy Ake hit a sacrifice fly to right, giving the Hens a 1-0 lead.

After Spadafino shut down the Dukes in the second and third innings, the Hens grabbed another run in the fourth on an RBI flyout by Patten.

The Dukes added three runs in the fourth before the Blue Hens tied the game again on another RBI flyout, this time by outfielder Jordan Glover in the fifth.

In the following inning, shortstop James Meeker tripled home Ake and Diaz Nardo to give the Blue Hens a 5-3 advantage.

In the bottom half the Dukes first two batters reached second and third with no out, prompting Sherman to summon Marinaccio.

The closer stranded both runners striking out a pair of Dukes in the process.

After the teams traded zeros in the seventh, the Dukes struck for a pair of runs in the eighth.

With two outs in the inning second baseman Josh Wyatt connected on his fourth home run of the season, tying the game at 5.

SUBJECT: Home Runs, Meeker's Solid Outing Leads Blue Hens Baseball to Doubleheader Split vs. William & Mary
DATE: April 1, 2017
NEWARK, Del
. -- Behind three home runs and 11 hits, the University of Delaware baseball squad defeated William & Mary 8-5 in the second game of Saturday’s Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The win earned Delaware a split of Saturday’s doubleheader as William & Mary captured the opener by an 8-2 score.
In the nightcap, the Hens received first-inning home runs from Nick Tierno and Nick Pattern while Brian Mayer hit his fourth home run of the year in the second inning. Delaware received a solid effort from reliever James Meeker to help preserve the win.
“Overall, this was an OK day for us,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We certainly won the second game because of our performances on the mound. We bounced back and swung the bats well in the second game. We have a really important swing game tomorrow. Hopefully the good things that happened in the second game can propel us into tomorrow.”
After a perfect top of the first inning from Blue Hens (14-10, 2-3 CAA) starter Nick Spadafino, Delaware got off to a quick 3-0 lead on the solo homer by Tierno and the two-run shot from Patten.
William & Mary (15-11, 2-3 CAA) quickly cut the Delaware lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the second. In the second inning, the Hens responded as Mayer socked a two-run homer well over the right centerfield wall, giving the Hens a 5-2 lead. The Tribe added a run in the third, cutting the UD lead to 5-3.
Spadafino returned to the mound for the fifth but was quickly replaced in favor of Meeker after the starter allowed a one-out home run that cut the UD lead to 5-4. Meeker came in and stabilized the game, recording the final two outs in the fifth.
After Meeker fired a scoreless seventh, the Hens bats came alive in the home half of the inning. Kevin Mohollen doubled with one out and Tierno walked. Jordan Glover followed with and RBI single, Doug Trimble doubled home another run, and Jeremy Ake brought home a run on a groundout to give the Hens an 8-4 advantage.
After Meeker allowed a double in the eight inning, Sherman brought in closer Ron Marinaccio, who got the Hens out of the jam and pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the win.
In game one of the doubleheader William & Mary defeated Delaware, 8-2 as the Tribe struck for fours runs in the first inning off Blue Hens starter Brandon Walter.
The Hens connected on 10 hits for the 13th time this season but only managed two runs off William & Mary starter Nick Brown, who pitched seven solid innings. Mohollen, Ake, and right fielder Calvin Scott each collected a pair of hits for the Hens.
Delaware and William & Mary will play the rubber-game Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior left-hander Kevin Milley (3-0, 2.65 ERA) will take the mound for the Hens while William & Mary will counter with left-hander Nick Raquet (1-1, 2.36 ERA).
“Going into tomorrow we need a good outing from Milley,” Sherman said. “Ideally we need six good innings from him and then we’ll see how everyone bounces back from today. We have Burk FitzPatrick also available for tomorrow and he’s been pitching really well for us. We certainly have options.”

SUBJCT: Delaware Softball Batters Drexel, 11-3 and 8-0, in CAA Twinbill Sweep
DATE: April 2, 2017
PHILADELPHIA
-- The University of Delaware softball team exploded for 19 runs on 26 hits as the Blue Hens swept a doubleheader from Drexel, 11-3 and 8-0, Sunday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field.
The Blue Hens fell behind 3-1 in the opener but responded to score the final 18 runs of the day, as Delaware evened its overall record at 14-14 and moved to 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. UD, which won its second straight league series, is tied for second place in the CAA standings along with James Madison, just one game behind conference leader UNCW. Drexel, which posted a 9-7 victory over the Blue Hens on Saturday, dropped to 9-12 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Devon Steiner led Delaware’s offensive onslaught by finishing 5 for 7 at the plate with six RBI, while Giovanna Kolofer added four hits and drove home five. Emily Neal and Anna Steinmetz also had four hits on the day, while Mariah Kondravy added three and Leanna Gearhart scored four times. Junior righthander Jordan Cargile enjoyed a tremendous afternoon in the circle, scattering seven hits in 10 scoreless innings while picking up a pair of wins.
Drexel scored twice during the opening inning of the first game, and after an RBI single by Steiner in the second put Delaware on the board, the Dragons added a run in the bottom half on a run-scoring single by Jenelle Ladrido to take a 3-1 advantage. But the Blue Hens would dominate from there, scoring four times in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Neal singled home Miranda O’Donald with the first run of the frame, while Steiner followed with a three-run homer to rightcenter as Delaware went in front 5-3.
After Neal drove home another run with a single in the fifth, Kondravy blasted a two-run shot to leftcenter in the sixth as the Blue Hens increased the lead to five. Delaware tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh as Steiner and Mattie Nuccio delivered RBI singles before Kolofer drove home the final run by bouncing into a fielder’s choice.
Meanwhile Cargile allowed just one hit and struck out four in five innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory in the circle. Neal and Steiner each finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored at the plate, with Steiner driving home five and Neal two.
Delaware, which scored during its final four innings of the opener, then scored during all five frames of the nightcap. Kolofer singled home Gearhart in the top of the first, and then added a two-run single in the second to give the Blue Hens a 3-0 advantage. Steinmetz led off the top of the third with a home run to rightcenter, while RBI singles by Kolofer, Steinmetz and Alyshia Dellatore increased the margin to seven in the fourth inning.
Steiner then singled home Kolofer in the fifth, and after Cargile set down the Dragons in the bottom half, the game ended due to the mercy rule. Kolofer finished 4 for 4 with four RBI during the second victory, while Cargile notched her second shutout of the season and earned her 11th win of the campaign.
Game Notes:
• Delaware has won 12 of its last 14 games
• The Blue Hens have not lost a CAA series to Drexel since 2010
• Steinmetz and Kondravy both now have 23 career homers, tying the school record held by Michelle Grap
• Steinmetz’s eight home runs this year are currently two more than any other player in the CAA
• Kolofer went 13 for 19 at the plate with 10 RBI during Delaware’s five games this week
• The Blue Hens return home on Wednesday to host Rider in a 3 p.m. doubleheader
