EMMITSBURG, Md.
– The Blue Hens closed out regular season play Friday with a disappointing 4-2 loss at Mount Saint Mary’s.
Senior Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led the way for Delaware by picking up wins in both doubles and singles action. Flematti opened the day by pairing with freshman Laurenz Lankes (Cologne, Germany) for the 6-3 top-flight doubles victory.
The Mount (6-13) captured wins in the second and third flights to clinch the team point.
Flematti then followed with a 7-6 (7), 6-2 triumph over Brandon Wortkotter in No. 4 singles.
Freshman Dominick Perez (Bethesda, Md./Gonzaga College) collected his 15th singles win of the season by defeating Peter Landis, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the fifth spot.
The Blue Hens (9-17) now await their destiny for next week’s CAA Tournament. Seeding, opponents and schedules will be announced early in the week.
POST-MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Pablo Montana

“We definitely had our chances today and this loss will sting for awhile. Mount Saint Mary’s came up with some big shots in doubles and eventually broke us to win the team point. In singles, we fought until the very end and that is one thing that I can always count on with this team. They will always give 100% effort and I’m very proud of the way we competed today. Congratulations to Tyler for having a great day and winning both his doubles and singles matches while keeping us tight in this match.”

The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the second, aided by two Delaware State errors, to take the lead.

Dover, Del. (Apr. 14, 2017) --- Delaware State scored six runs on the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Morgan State 9-8 in the second game of a MEAC North doubleheader today. The Bears won the opener 2-1 in eight innings.

In game two, the Hornets trailed 8-3 before coming to bat in the sixth. Vanessa Washington singled home DSU’s first run of the inning. Dani Velez followed with a run-scoring single and another run crossed the plate on a Morgan State error on the play to cut the Bears’ lead to 8-6. There was one out in the inning when Jasmine Melgoza drove in a run on a single through the left side make pull the Hornets to within a run. Delaware State tied the game at 8-8 on a fielder’s choice groundout by Sabrina Quarles. The Hornets scored the go-ahead run when Micaela Cummings scampered home on a wild pitch.

DSU freshman Hannah Shield retired the Bears in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win. Shields allowed one run in three inning of relief to collect her team-best six win of the season (6-9).

Morgan State opened the scoring in the nightcap with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Hornets answered with three in the bottom of the first to take a short-lived lead.

The Bears regained the lead with two runs in the second inning and opened up a 7-3 advantage with three runs in the fourth.

Melgoza was 3-for-4 with a run batted in, and Velez had two hits and a RBI in three at bats in the nightcap.

The teams combined for seven errors in game two, four by Morgan State.

The opener was highlighted by solid pitching and defense.

Morgan State scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning after Delaware State forced the extra inning with two-out run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Bears led 1-0 on a home run by Danielle Pitpit off DSU’s Tara Tursellino to lead off the third inning.

There were two outs when Cummings smacked a double to the fence in right center to score Velez with the tying run.

SUBJECT: Consistent Performance Pushes Delaware Baseball to Series Opening 8-4 Win Over Hofstra
DATE: April 14, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware baseball program turned in one of its most complete performances of the season Friday afternoon, defeating Hofstra 8-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association series opener at Bob Hannah Stadium.
A large crowd of nearly 800 took in the game that evened the Blue Hens' CAA record at 5-5. Delaware won its second straight to improve to 18-14 on the season.
The Hens lowered their conference-leading ERA to 4.79 and every single batter reached base. Shortstop Jeremy Ake produced a career-high four hits and pair of RBI.
“We do not win the ballgame today without the performances on the mound,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “ [Nick] Spadafino had a bit of trouble early, but he bounced back due to his sinker, in the fourth and fifth. I thought [Colman] Vila was excellent in his two innings, as was [Ron] Marinaccio. We got a few big hits from Ake, and [Brian] Mayer. The big hits were the difference between pulling out the victory like we did today and coming up short like we did last weekend at Northeastern.”
Delaware fell behind early on Friday as Hens start Nick Spadafino struggled a bit in the early portion of the game.
Hofstra (8-23, 2-5 CAA) produced seven hits in the first three innings off Spadafino, but the righty did a nice job of controlling the damage.
In the first, the Pride produced three hits, but a pair of base running blunders cost them dearly. With one out, Sean Rausch was picked-off at first base, and with two outs the Pride had a runner gunned down at the plate on a beautiful throw by Jordan Glover.
Hofstra struck for a run in the second, creating a two-out rally. With two men gone, Spadafino walked second baseman Todd Archer, who advanced to second on a balk. After a hit batter added a runner on first base, outfielder Stephen Foster doubled home Archer. Hofstra added to its lead on a two-run home run by third baseman David Liederman in the third.
Facing a 3-0 deficit, the Hens offense went to work in the bottom of the third and fourth, adding a run in the third and four runs in the fourth.
In the third, the Hens scored with two men out on back-to-back doubles from Nick Tierno and Doug Trimble. In the fourth, the Hens scored four runs, loading the bases in the process.
Nick Patten led-off the inning with one of his three walks for the day and stole second with nobody out. The next hitter, Calvin Scott, tripled to score Patten. Diaz Nardo later added an RBI single that tied the game at 3-3.
With two out in the inning, Hofstra starter Teddy Cills walked Tierno, setting up first and third for Trimble. Much like the third, the designated hitter delivered, singling home Nardo for the go-ahead run. Delaware added the fourth run of the inning on a Glover bases-loaded walk.
Following the shaky start, Spadafino settled down, allowing just one run over the final two innings of his outing. After Spadafino, the Hens received four scoreless innings from Colman Vila and Ron Marinaccio. Vila pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh and the Hens took the 4-3 lead in to the bottom half of the seventh.
In the home half of the seventh Brian Mayer extended the Hens lead to 7-4, hitting a two-run double.
For the eighth, the Hens summoned Marinaccio, who produced a scoreless inning.
Delaware added a run in the bottom half of the inning before Marinaccio finished it off in the ninth, earning his team-leading third save of the season.
The Hens and Pride will face-off in the middle game of the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. LHP Kevin Milley will take the ball for the Hens while RHP Jorge Marrero will pitch for Hofstra.
“We need Milley to come out strong tomorrow,” Sherman later added. “He hasn’t been quite as sharp his last two times out. We need a good solid six or seven innings. If we get that we’ll be in good shape. Kevin is at his best when he’s aggressive and throwing a lot of strikes early.”

ELON, N.C.
– A successful season came to a close Friday morning as the Blue Hens fell to James Madison, 4-0, in the CAA Women’s Tennis Tournament Quarterfinals, held at Elon University’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Freshman Brooke Pilkington (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) and junior Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) paired for a 6-3 No. 3 doubles win, but the fourth-seeded Dukes (17-7) capture the team point with victories in the first and second flights.

POST-MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Laura Travis

“Credit goes to JMU – they executed better than we did today. It stings right now, but there is wisdom that we gained and will use to grow from this experience. I’m incredibly proud of this group as 12 wins this season is quite an accomplishment. And even more telling is the fact that we were 5-0 when the team score was tied at 3-3, with four of the five wins going down to the wire in the third and final set. Everyone has contributed to our success in her own way. Our future is bright as we build upon the remarkable strides we have made in one year.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Delaware finishes the year with six players with at least 13 wins for the first time since 2010-11.
· Brooke Pilkington wraps the year tied for second in program single-season history with 24 wins as a freshman. The mark is also good to tie for fourth in single-season history for all players.
· Denny LaMachia concludes her three-year career in a Blue Hens uniform with 38 singles (tied for 30th in program history) and 41 doubles (tied for 20th in program history) wins.

SUBJECT: Delaware Headed To Columbus Regional for NCAA Women's Golf Championships
DATE: April 27, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware was selected to participate in the Columbus, Ohio Regional of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships announced Thursday morning on Golf Channel.
The Blue Hens were one of 18 teams sent to the regional, which is hosted by Ohio State and will be held May 8-10 on the par 72, 6,416-yard Scarlet Course at the OSU Golf Club. Delaware will be the 16th seed at the regional, along with (listed by seed) Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado, Texas A&M, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan, San Jose State, Houston, Louisville, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Old Dominion, Missouri State and Cleveland State.
Additionally Loy Hee Ying of East Tennessee State, Camila Serrano of Florida International, Michaela Fletcher of Memphis, Emma Albrecht of Notre Dame, Kate Smith of Nebraska and Emie Peronnin of Minnesota will be competing as individuals at the regional.
The low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams from each of the four regionals advance to the national championships, which will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Delaware will be advancing to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive season after successfully defending its Colonial Athletic Association title with an 11-shot victory on Apr. 14-16. The Blue Hens posted a three-round total of 896 at Ford's County Country Club in Williamsburg, Va., as Ariane Klotz finished in third place while Ashley Dingman was eighth and Vitoria Teixeira tied for ninth place.
“We're really excited to be heading to the NCAA Regionals for the second straight year,” said Blue Hen senior Grace Chua. “We're going in with more experience this year, and the team is playing really well. We are excited to get another chance at advancing to the NCAA Championship.”
“This is definitely exciting for all of us,” Dingman commented. “There is potential on our team to move on to nationals; the sky is the limit for this program.”
Delaware, led by two-time CAA Coach of the Year Patty Post, has posted six top five finishes on the season, while the team's 78.19 average round would be the lowest in the six-year history of the program. Klotz, a first team All-CAA selection and the CAA Rookie of the Year, leads the squad with a 74.90 stroke average, which would be the lowest single season average in school history. She has recorded a team-leading five top 10 finishes during the year, and has been the Blue Hens' top finisher in six tournaments.
Teixeira has notched four top 10 finishes and ranks second on the team with a 76.31 average round, while Valentina Mueller is third on the squad with a 76.42 stroke average. Dingman (77.45) and Chua (77.93) have also both appeared in all 10 invitationals during the season for Delaware.
“The team has worked very hard, including a lot of work behind the scenes, to get back to the NCAA Regionals,” Post said. “We're excited to head to Ohio State; we have some experience playing in the regionals, and our players will greatly benefit from the exposure of playing alongside higher level competition.”

ANNVILLE, Pa

“We are delighted to announce the 2017 MAC Hall of Fame,” said MAC Executive Director Ken Andrews. “This is an exceptional group that represents the best of the Middle Atlantic Conference. It is an honor to recognize these contributors to the MAC legacy.”

Delaware was a member of the MAC for football from 1958 until 1969 and was affiliated in baseball from 1946 until 1974. Raymond is the second Blue Hen selected to the Hall of Fame, joining former UD Director of Athletics and head football coach David Nelson, who was honored posthumously last year.

The MAC honor represents the fifth Hall of Fame that Raymond has gained induction to, including the College Football Hall of Fame (2003), University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame (2002), the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame (1993), and the Greater Flint (Mich.) The MAC holds no formal induction ceremony, but Raymond will be honored at a home Delaware football game this coming fall.

A native of Flint, Mich., Raymond played both football and baseball at the University of Michigan before earning his degree in 1950 and spending a year in the minor leagues with the New York Yankees organization and one year as an assistant coach at the University of Maine.

During his legendary career, Raymond won 300 games, was named National Coach of the Year four times, led Delaware to three national championships, 14 Lambert Cup trophies, 16 NCAA playoff appearances, and nine conference titles, including MAC championships in 1966, 1968, and 1969.

As Delaware’s head coach for baseball in 1956-65, he led Blue Hen teams to a record of 142-55-3 (.710 winning pct.) and captured MAC titles in 1956, 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1964. He also led the Blue Hens to three NCAA Tournament appearances in 1956, 1960, and 1961.

SUBJECT: Delaware's Steinmetz Earns First Team All-CAA Softball Honors, Kondravy Selected To Second Team
DATE: May 9, 2017
RICHMOND, Va.
-- University of Delaware sophomore catcher Anna Steinmetz was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Softball First Team while junior first baseman Mariah Kondravy was selected to the second team as the league announced its all-conference award winners Tuesday night.
Steinmetz (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester Bayard Rustin), who earned All-CAA Second Team and CAA Rookie of the Year honors a year ago, was named to the first team this season as she leads the team with 11 home runs and 43 RBI. Steinmetz ranks second on the Blue Hens with a .359 batting average, 55 hits and eight doubles, while her 23 runs scored are fourth most on the squad. She has started all 51 games behind the plate this season, leading the team with 18 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI efforts.
Steinmetz's 11 homers runs are tied for second most in the CAA and rank fourth in a UD single season, while her 43 RBI are sixth in the league and fifth in a Blue Hen single season. Already the school's career leader with 26 homers, she belted a game-winning grand slam in the seventh inning during the 5-4 victory over Winthrop on Mar. 11.
Kondravy (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), who earned second team All-CAA honors as a freshman and first team accolades a year ago, becomes Delaware's first three-time all-conference honoree since Amanda Cariello from 1999-2002. She has started every game this season, all but one at first base, and leads the Blue Hens with a .364 batting average, 60 hits, and a CAA-best 17 doubles. Kondravy also ranks second on the squad and seventh in the league with 40 RBI, while her 17 doubles are two shy of the UD single season record.
Kondravy, who already holds the UD career RBI record, is one home run behind Steinmetz on the career home runs list. She has hit safely in 13 consecutive games, two away from the school record, and smacked a game-winning three-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning during the 5-4 victory at Charleston on Apr. 22.
Additionally Blue Hen junior shortstop Leanna Gearhart (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), who carries a 3.726 grade point average as an exercise science major, was the Blue Hens' representative on the CAA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year. Gearhart has started 48 games this season, leading the CAA in steals for the second straight year with 33 thefts, 12 more than any other player in the league. She paces the team with 36 runs scored and is third with 48 hits, while ranking fourth on the squad with a .310 batting average. Already UD's career leader with 88 steals, Gearhart ranks second with 127 runs scored, eight shy of the school record.
Delaware finished its regular season with a 24-27 overall record, and earned the fifth seed in the CAA Championship with a 10-11 league mark. The Blue Hens open tournament play on Wednesday at 11 a.m. against fourth-seeded UNCW at James Madison's Veterans Memorial Park.

Ormond Beach, Fla. (May 12, 2017) --- Tara Tursellino tossed a three-hit complete game and Jasmine Melgoza doubled in the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning to lead Delaware State to a 3-1 victory over Hampton to stay alive in the 2017 MEAC Softball Tournament at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The No. 2-seeded Hornets will have a rematch with North Carolina A&T in an another elimination game at 3:00 p.m. Friday. Hampton, the 2017 MEAC North champion and a No. 1 seed, is eliminated from the tournament after suffering its second loss.

Tursellino allowed just three singles and one run, while striking out four in seven innings to improve to 6-10 this season. She retired the last seven Hampton batters in the game and set down the Pirates in order in five innings.

Hampton scored first when Brianna Anderson singled in MacKenzie Wise with two outs in the third inning.

The Pirates held the one-run lead until the fourth inning when Delaware State tied the game. There were two outs and the bases empty when Mika Lumsden reached base on a ball that was lost in the sun by Hampton first baseman Jada Fields. The Hornets took advantage of the break when Khaliyah Flournory doubled to the fence in left field to score Lumsden with the tying run.

The score remained tied when the Hornets took the lead in the fifth inning. Danielle Velez started the rally with a leadoff single. Subject: Delaware to Introduce Natasha Adair as Women¹s Basketball Head Coach Monday
To:

Web article: http://ow.ly/5jQQ30bHluS
NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak announced Sunday afternoon that Natasha Adair has been selected as just the fourth women’s basketball head coach in the program’s illustrious 46-year history.

Media personnel are invited to partake in a press conference with Rawak and Adair at 11 a.m. Monday in the Bob Carpenter Center Addition film room.

Adair will be officially introduced to the Blue Hens community Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center. Fans are invited to attend the welcome announcement at the Bob or follow live online at www.facebook.com/DelawareBlueHens.

“It became clear very quickly during this search that Natasha was the right person to lead this program,” remarked Rawak. “She brings a competitive spirit to all she does and is committed to helping young women grow on the court, in the classroom and in the community; embracing and supporting the complete student-athlete experience.”

Adair joins the Blue Hens from Georgetown University, where she turned around a four-win Hoya program to a postseason contender in three seasons as head coach. Behind Adair’s leadership this past season, GU finished the year with a 17-13 record, the most wins for the Hoyas since 2011-12, and garnered the team’s second straight trip to the Postseason WNIT.

Adair was recently selected as a court coach for the 2017 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Cup Team trials.

“Natasha Adair personifies the dream candidate to lead the new era of Blue Hens basketball,” said UD President Dennis Assanis. “She instantly brings the attributes that we seek in our new hires to drive our programs to success. With a deep commitment to both academics and athletics, she has mentored and guided student-athletes to achieve their career goals both on and off the court. Natasha is an outstanding leader who will actively engage our players, our campus and our UD community.”

The Silver Spring, Md. native is no stranger to the Colonial Athletic Association as her first head coaching stint took her to the College of Charleston, where she was 35-31 overall. In the Cougars’ first season in the CAA in 2013-14, Adair guided The College to record of 19-15, marking the third-highest win total in the school’s Division I era. Additionally, the squad finished third in conference play, defeated five postseason teams from the previous year and advanced to the semifinals of both the CAA Championship and the Women’s Basketball invitational.

“I would like to thank President Dennis Assanis and Director of Athletics Chrissi Rawak for this amazing opportunity to lead the University of Delaware's women's basketball program,” shared Adair. “Chrissi is relentless in her efforts to surpass all expectations for excellence here at the University Delaware. Under her leadership, and with the unwavering support of President Assanis, the decision to become a Blue Hen was not only an easy one but also the right one for my family and me. Their passion and commitment to comprehensive excellence for the student-athletes, along with the entire university community, is what compelled me to make this exciting decision.”

Adair played collegiately at Pensacola Junior College (1990-92) before playing and graduating from the University of South Florida with a degree in communications in 1994. She previously spent 13 seasons in the assistant coaching ranks, with seven years (2004-12) at Wake Forest University and six seasons (1998-04) at Georgetown University. Her coaching career has seen her develop and mentor 12 players who went on to play at the professional level.

SUBJECT: Delaware Completes Baseball Sweep with 8-0 Shutout Over Towson, Posts 10th Straight Home Win
DATE: May 14, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware baseball squad completed a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep from Towson Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens shutout the Tigers 8-0 behind an impressive showing on the mound at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The victory marked Delaware's 10th consecutive home victory this season as the Blue Hens (28-20, 13-8 CAA) improved to 20-3 overall and 8-1 vs. CAA opponents on friendly ground. Delaware swept a doubleheader from Towson (19-32, 5-16 CAA) by scores of 7-5 and 11-1 on Friday as part of the successful weekend.
On Sunday, two Blue Hen pitchers combined to throw a four-hit shutout as senior Kevin Milley (4-3) pitched the first five innings while James Meeker pitched the last four to earn his second save. Milley allowed just two hits and struck out four while Meeker struck out six in his four innings of work and scattered a pair of hits.
Delaware posted its third shutout of the season and first since blanking Penn State by scores of 5-0 and 8-0 back on May 18-19 at Hannah Stadium. The win also marked Delaware's first shutout win in CAA play since the Hens blanked Hofstra 6-0 back on Apr. 19, 2014 in Hempstead, N.Y.
The Blue Hens also got the job done offensively, banging out 14 hits on the day.
“Again, we received outstanding pitching,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman who was honored by UD Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak in a pre-game ceremony for winning his 500th game at Delaware back on May 7. “Anytime you get a shutout you have to tip your hat to the pitchers. I thought both Milley and Meeker were excellent. It was good to see Milley rebound after struggling a bit, and then Meeker did what he's done all year, coming in and closing the door.”
The Hens started quickly Sunday, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as centerfielder Kevin Mohollen led off with a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Jordan Glover. After a stolen base and a walk, Nick Patten hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season to give the Hens a 3-0 advantage.
In the third, Jeremy Ake singled with two outs and later scored on Doug Trimble's RBI triple. Trimble, who went 2-3 with three RBI, later hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give Delaware a comfortable 6-0 lead.
Delaware added runs in the sixth and seventh on a pair of sacrifice flies and cruised to the 8-0 win.
The victory improves Delaware to a season-best eight-games over .500 overall and five games above .500 in the CAA. The Hens are currently just one game behind UNCW for the conference lead and a half-game behind Northeastern for the second spot.
Delaware concludes the regular season at home next weekend (May 18-20) against the College of Charleston.
“Glover has not missed a beat since coming back,” Sherman added. “It was good to see Doug produce another good game and see (Nick) Tierno swing the bat well. We're going to need all our guys to win the CAA Tournament in two weeks [at UNCW]. The pitching is vital, but we also need our bats. Heading into next weekend we must play desperate for wins. We can control our destiny a bit in terms of seeding. We have to have a few things happen, but need to just keep winning and hope that someone slips up, pushing us into one of the top two seeds.”

DSU EQUESTRIAN EARNS NATIONAL SPORTSMANSHIP HONOR

Tue, May 16, 2017
Dover, Del. (May 16, 2017) --- For the second time in the five year history of the honor, Delaware State has been presented with the National Collegiate Equestrian Association's annual Sportsmanship Award. The award, selected by NCEA coaches, was presented at the group's annual convention last week. The Sportsmanship Award encompasses the entire 2016-17 season of competition.

In the presenting statement, the NCEA offered congratulations to the Delaware State University equestrian team, its coaches and the university administration for producing great sportsmanship within the program; and earning the award for the second time.

The Hornet equestrian team was the first-ever recipient of the award in 2013.

Delaware State University Head Equestrian Coach Jennifer Ridgeley said the award is a major achievement for the program and the university.

“We try extremely hard to win each competition, but character and sportsmanship are just as important to our program,” said Ridgeley. “The positive values we impart to our young ladies will carry them well beyond their college years.”

The sportsmanship award capped off another memorable season for the Hornet equestrian team. The team's 2016-17 highlights included its first-ever United Equestrian Conference championship, NCEA national tournament appearance for the second year in a row and 10 national academic All-Stars, including three First Team All-Americans.

In addition, the Hornets produced an All-American Horse (“Calvin”) for the second straight year.

SALISBURY, Md., May 17, 2017—Florida A&M, the Southern Division's No. 3 seed, scored in five of the seven innings played on Wednesday en ruote to a 12-2 run-rule victory over Delaware State at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium on the first day of the 2017 MEAC Baseball Championship.

The Rattlers (27-24) will take on Bethune-Cookman on Thursday at 12 p.m.

FAMU struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Garrett Wilkinson, before pushing across two more runs in the third when Willis McDaniel cranked a two-run home run over the left field wall to put the Rattlers up 3-0.

Two more runs scored in the fifth, as the Rattlers took advantage of two Delaware State errors to take a 5-0 lead. FAMU followed that in the sixth by pushing across three more runs, the first coming on an RBI single from McDaniel. Aubrey McCarty then walked with the bases loaded to push across another run, before Ben Ellzey did the same thing to give the Rattlers an 8-0 lead.

The Hornets (20-24) struck twice in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the lead to 8-2 after a Jaylen Zielecki sac fly and an RBI single from Tommy Jordan.

But the Rattlers put the game away for good in the top of the seventh, starting with Russ Kodi scoring on an error to make the score 9-2. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, McCarty doubled to left center to bring across all three runs and give FAMU a 12-2 lead.

Dallas Oliver was 5-for-5 at the plate leading off for the Rattlers, while McDaniel was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and McCarty drove in four runs on a 2-for-4 effort.

McCarty also struck out five in 5.2 innings pitched for his sixth win of the season.

Delaware State dropped into the elimination bracket, where the Hornets will face MEAC Northern Division rival Maryland Eastern Shore at 7 p.m.

As part of this reorganization, Mike Keogh has been named Assistant Men's and Women's Golf Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, and Brendon Post has been named Assistant Men's and Women's Golf Coach and Director of Player Development.
“We are very excited for Patty to lead this combined effort,” Jennifer Judy, Senior Associate Director of Athletics commented. “She has done a fantastic job with our women's program, and we have great confidence that this investment in full-time coaching positions, along with Patty's leadership, will enable us to build a program focused on sustainable success for our athletes. I look forward to both teams having the opportunity to compete for championships and take pride in their student-athlete experience at UD.”
The only coach in UD women's golf history, Patty Post recently completed her sixth year in Newark, and has led the Blue Hens to consecutive Colonial Athletic Association titles and NCAA Regional appearances. She has earned CAA Women's Golf Coach of the Year honors in each of the last two seasons.
Delaware has captured eight team titles over the last four years, while Andi Slane won the 2015 and 2016 CAA individual titles and Ariane Klotz was selected the 2017 CAA Rookie of the Year. Six Blue Hens have earned all-conference honors under Post, who was selected the 2014 LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Northeast Coach of the Year and then National Coach of the Year in the fall of 2014.
“This is a special opportunity to oversee the men's and women's golf teams and the future of the golf programs at the University of Delaware,” commented Post. “Investing in our staff is a crucial part of providing our student-athletes on both teams the best possible coaching and player development while at Delaware. We strive to make ourselves and our players better every day.”
Keogh, who served as head coach of the UD men's team for the past 16 years in a part-time role, will take over full-time assistant coach and recruiting duties with both programs. The 2015 CAA Men's Golf Coach of the Year, Keogh has led the Blue Hens to 130 top-10 finishes and 16 team titles, including this year's season-opening Colgate/Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational. Keogh has coached two conference tournament champions and NCAA Tournament participants during his tenure, as Justin Martinson claimed the 2010 CAA title while Greg Matthias captured the 2012 league crown.
Brendon Post has been a part-time assistant coach with the UD women's team during all six years in the history of the program. During his tenure the Blue Hens have recorded 51 top 10-team finishes, including eight team titles. He has helped coach six All-CAA honorees, including first team selections Slane in 2015 and Klotz in 2017.
Patty and Brendon Post are a married couple. As such, in accordance with University policy, Brendon Post will report directly to John Krimmel, Associate Director of Athletics.
TRANSACTIONS: Delaware - Promoted Women's Golf Head Coach Patty Post to Director of Golf Programs and Men's Golf Head Coach; announced Men's Golf Head Coach Mike Keogh and Women's Assistant Coach Brendon Post have moved into full-time assistant coaching positions within the program.

SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball Continues to Roll, Downs Top Seed Northeastern 5-3 to Advance at CAA Tournament
DATE: May 25, 2017
WILMINGTON, N.C. --
The University of Delaware baseball squad continued to roll in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Thursday night as shortstop Jeremy Ake clouted a two-run home run with two outs in the fifth and the Hens got another sterling effort on the mound in a 5-3 win over top seed Northeastern at UNCW’s Brooks Field.

The win, Delaware’s eighth in the last nine games, moves the Hens into the winner’s bracket game Friday against the winner of the Thursday late game between No. 2 seed UNCW and No. 3 William & Mary.

No. 4 seed Delaware (32-21) received five and one-third excellent innings from starter Nick Spadafino (7-3) and three and two-thirds from the bullpen.

Relievers Colman Vila and Burk FitzPatrick combined to allow just two hits and one unearned run with FitzPatrick earning his sixth save of the year.

At the plate, catcher Brian Mayer went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Ake went 2-for-3 with his pivotal two-run home run and two runs scored.

“The story tonight again is our pitching with a bit of clutch hitting,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman, whose team downed College of Charleston in the tournament opener Wednesday. “That’s been the story of this tournament so far as we’ve given up just six hits and two runs in two games. It was a great job by all our pitchers, and by (pitching) coach [Troy] O’Neal for calling a great game. Our pitchers are hitting their spots at the right times. It was a great job by all three guys.”

Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead after four innings as Nick Tierno singled home Doug Trimble in the second and Mayer brought home Ake with an RBI single in the fourth.

After Northeastern (28-24) tied the game on back-to-back home runs in the fourth, Ake put UD ahead for good on his third home run of the season in the fifth.

“I was just trying to do what I always do and get on top of the ball, put the ball in the gap, and get our offense rolling as best as I can,” Ake said. “Both (pitchers) Ronnie (Marinaccio) and Spadafino have given us exactly what we’ve needed so far. If we’re going to make a long run in this tournament, we’re going to need efforts like we got tonight. Ronnie going the whole game yesterday was tremendous and Spad giving us the effort tonight were huge.”

In the sixth, Delaware scored the fifth run of the ballgame, when Mayer doubled home Tierno.

Northeastern struck for an unearned run in the eighth before FitzPatrick closed it out for the save, striking out two batters in one and a third innings. FitzPatrick’s sixth save of the season and Spadafino’s seventh win are both good for second best in the CAA.

“Our guys have been extremely clutch so far,” Sherman added. “Both Mayer and Ake have been clutch down the stretch. They’re both perfect examples of senior leadership. We’re undefeated in the winner’s bracket, we just need to continue to do what we’ve been doing.”

“We know what we have to do to keep this group together and keep winning,” Ake added. “We’re going to hopefully keep it going. We’re a confident bunch right now and we need to keep it going.”

SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball Holds NCAA Watch Party; Travel to #3 Texas Tech for Lubbock Regional
DATE: May 29, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The newly crowned Colonial Athletic Association champion University of Delaware baseball squad is heading to Lubbock, Texas for the NCAA Tournament this coming weekend.

The Blue Hens (34-21), who have won 10 of their last 11 games, earned the number four seed in the Lubbock Regional and will play this Friday at 3 p.m. (EST) against host, top-seed, and No. 3 ranked (D1baseball.com) Texas Tech (43-15).

Friday's game will be available on WatchESPN.com. The winner of Friday's game will face the winner of #15 Arizona (37-19) vs. Sam Houston State (40-20), Saturday at 7 p.m. (EST). The losing teams in the first day matchups will meet Saturday at 3 p.m. (EST) in the first elimination game.

Delaware is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in school history but for the first time since the 2001 season when the Hens competed at the Columbus, Ohio Regional at Ohio State.

"This is not an icing on the cake type of deal, we are going out there to win,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We are in a four-team, double-elimination tournament. Our No. 1 guy Ron Marinaccio is throwing really well and we believe in him. Right now, we are swinging the bats well. We are going out there to win and anything is possible. We think we have the right team”

Delaware earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title behind four impressive victories in four days. The Hens outscored opponents by a 38-14 margin in sweeping all four games, two against host and No. 2 seed UNCW.

The Blue Hens lead the CAA in both batting average (.313/No. 14 in NCAA), earned run average (4.35), and scoring (7.5 runs per game/No. 16 in NCAA) becoming the first CAA team to pull off that statistical triple since 2002.

Eight Delaware starters are batting over .300 for the season led by CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Jeremy Ake, a senior shortstop who ranks No. 2 in the CAA with a .359 average. Five Blue Hens have knocked in 40 or more runs this season while three have 10 or home runs. Sophomore first baseman Nick Patten has a team-high 14 home runs and leads the squad with 52 RBI.

"Texas Tech is a great baseball program and we are looking forward to going down there and playing Delaware Baseball," said Patten. "We are feeling great. We've been getting great hitting, pitching, and defense and we showed that this past weekend. As long as we can keep doing what we do, we can go down and there and play some good ball."

On the mound, Marinaccio leads the CAA and ranks No. 14 nationally with a 1.85 ERA to go with a record of 4-2 that includes 65 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. Since moving from the closer roll midway through the season, he has a 0.93 ERA and a 4-1 record in seven starts.

"We are definitely playing our best baseball right now," said Marinaccio. "It's just baseball, so anything can happen. We are going to be on that field and expect to win. Our defense is playing well and we are hitting well. We feel confident. It's going to be fun playing in front of a big crowd and a great atmosphere."

On Monday, the Blue Hens gathered for a celebration as the 35 student-athletes, friends, family members, UD staff, and Blue Hens fans all gathered in the Bob Carpenter Center Club for a watch party. About 20-minutes into the hour-long program which aired nationally live on ESPN2, the Blue Hens saw their name announced, setting off wild celebration.

"It's always about the kids and their commitment,” Sherman added. “This team really has come together with all the work they have done on the field and in the classroom. That whole commitment is worthwhile, especially with winning the conference championship. It lifts our reputation another level. We always had that great reputation in the 70s, 80s, and 90s and we want to get back to that again."

Delaware has never faced Texas Tech, Sam Houston State, or Arizona dating back to the program's inception in 1889. The trip will be the Hens' first visit to the state of Texas since playing host University of Houston in a three-game set to open the 2012 season.

CAA Tournament Recap

On Wednesday afternoon, Delaware defeated College of Charleston 9-0 behind a two-hit complete game shutout from Marinaccio, who allowed just an infield single in the first inning, a two-out walk in the sixth, and a two-out single in the ninth. He faced just three batters above the minimum. Ake went 3-4 with two RBI to lead the offense.

Thursday evening, the Blue Hens faced-off with top seeded Northeastern. Again, pitching was the story as UD allowed just two earned runs. Starter Nick Spadafino pitched five and one-third strong innings allowing just back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth. Spadafino earned his team leading seventh victory of the season.

At the plate, Ake hit a clutch two-run home run and the Blue Hens received three and two-thirds of strong relief from setup man Colman Vila and closer Burk FitzPatrick. FitzPatrick pitched the final four outs to earn his sixth save of the season, while Vila pitched two and one-third innings, striking out three.

The Blue Hens returned to action Friday and Saturday against host UNCW. On Friday, the Blue Hens jumped out to an early 3-0 on a three-run home run by Patten. UNCW battled back and took a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning. Delaware, behind two runs in the fourth and eight runs in the sixth took the lead for good.

The eight-run sixth inning featured a pair of two-out home runs by catcher Brian Mayer and centerfielder Kevin Mohollen. Nine straight Blue Hens reached base safely, as UD drove in all eight runs with two outs.

After UNCW defeated Northeastern in the final elimination game of the tournament, the Seahawks and Blue Hens met one final time. In that game, UNCW starter Luke Gesell pitched to five batters, and recorded just one out. Three different UNCW relievers combined to allow nine runs and six hits in the opening frame. Reliever Kyle Hinton pitched seven one-run innings to preserve the win for the Blue Hens.

SUBJECT: Delaware Seniors Celebrate Special Graduation Ceremony, CAA Baseball Title on Same Day
DATE: May 31, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- For eight graduating University of Delaware baseball student-athletes, Saturday was a day they will always remember.
While annual UD Commencement exercises were taking place for nearly 6,000 graduates at a packed Delaware Stadium, those eight Blue Hen baseball players were gathered among a somewhat smaller crowd of teammates, coaches, and family members in Wilmington, N.C.
Those eight student-athletes took part in a graduation ceremony of their own Saturday morning at the team hotel. And later that afternoon, they joined their teammates in another big celebration as the Blue Hens knocked off UNCW 10-3 to capture their first Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001.
Now that's a full day.
Jeremy Ake, Burk FitzPatrick, Jordan Glover, Ron Marinaccio, Brian Mayer, Kevin Milley, Doug Trimble, and Nick Tierno were each scheduled to walk and receive their degrees at Delaware's 2017 graduation. Instead, they were nearly 500 miles to the south, looking to make history and continue a dream.
The Blue Hens, who in dominating fashion won four games in four days to win the CAA Tournament for the first time in program history for head coach Jim Sherman, were forced to miss the “official” commencement activities back in Newark.
But UD athletics administrators got creative and planned a graduation ceremony at the team hotel.
Associate Athletic Director for Student Services and Sport Administrator John Krimmel organized a 30-minute ceremony that featured athletes receiving their ‘diplomas', a commencement address from FitzPatrick's father, Norman, video messages from UD Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak and Academic Counselor Bridget Burger, and much more.
“Saturday was certainly a special day for all of our student-athletes, but especially our eight seniors,” Krimmel said. “We know that it's a day that all of our athletes will remember for many years to come. In terms of putting together the ceremony, it was a complete team effort and would not have been possible without the help of Chrissi, (Senior Associate AD, Student Services & Sport Administrator) Jenn Judy, (Director of Olympic Sports Operations) Dana Griskowitz, (Media Relations Intern) Andrew Stern, our equipment staff, the baseball coaching staff, (General Manager of the UD Bookstore) Jennifer Galt, and (University Archives and Records Management) Jason Kramer.”
After the ceremony, the athletes, staff, and family members in attendance gathered to sing the University of Delaware alma mater - just like what was happening back in Newark.
And while UD graduates back in Delaware were gathering and heading out for dinner and celebrations with loved ones after the ceremony, the Blue Hen baseball squad had other matters to attend to – locking in and preparing to win a conference championship.
After winning their first three games of the tournament, including victories over top seed Northeastern and No. 2 seed UNCW, the Blue Hens needed just one win to secure the title.
Delaware jumped out to a quick start, scoring nine first inning runs to put the game away for good. Sophomore Kyle Hinton was the hero on the mound, pitching the final seven innings of the ballgame to earn the victory.
The Blue Hens placed six members on the All-Tournament team, including CAA Tournament MVP Ake and his fellow graduates Glover, Mayer, and Marinaccio.
“Compared to the big commencement and convocations, this felt a little more special because everyone who was there was there for you,” said Milley of the small graduation gathering in Wilmington. “There were only eight of us so it felt a little more personal. It was a great event. Graduating and winning the CAA title means everything to me, especially because it was with these guys. The majority of us came in at the same time and we've been together all four years. We've created a bond that is really special."
The Blue Hens will now head to Lubbock, Texas to take on host and No. 5 national seed Texas Tech in Friday's opener at 3 p.m. (ET).

SUBJECT: University of Delaware to Host ECAC Division III Football Fest Nov. 17-19, 2017 at Delaware Stadium
DATE:  June 1, 2017
DANBURY, Conn.
- The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced today the sites of the next two editions of the Division III Football Bowl Championships (DIII Football Fest).
The University of Delaware will host the event in 2017 at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium, while 2018 will see DIII Football Fest return to the University of Pennsylvania.
Entering its third year, DIII Football Fest features the best ECAC DIII football teams competing in a series of bowl games at a neutral site over a multiple-day span. Since it was first held in 2015, the event has become one of the Conference's marquee championship events.
The ECAC will once again partner with Pack Network to bring viewers a live selection show and full-game broadcasts in 2017 and 2018.
The 2017 event will be held Nov. 17-19 at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium on the campus of the University of Delaware. The 22,000-seat stadium is the second largest in the Colonial Athletic Association and one of the largest in the nation in FCS football.
In 2002, the Delaware Stadium playing surface was dedicated as Tubby Raymond Field, recognizing Delaware's College Football Hall of Fame head coach who retired following the 2001 season after compiling 300 victories in 36 seasons.
"On behalf of the University of Delaware and the Newark community, we are excited to host the ECAC Division III Football Fest here at Delaware Stadium this coming November," said Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak. "We are honored to be selected to host some of the top football teams and student-athletes in the country for this one-of-a-kind event. We wish all the teams the best as they work towards this goal and invite everyone to come out and support them in what should be another great event and a fun atmosphere at Delaware Stadium."
"We are thrilled to be partnering with Delaware for 2017 and Penn for 2018. Both campuses boast top-notch facilities that add to the overall experience for our student-athletes. Last year the staff at Penn was phenomenal and we know we'll have the same type of service with the crew from Delaware," said ECAC Vice President/CFO John Rollins.
In 2018, DIII Football Fest will be back at historic Franklin Field for another epic weekend of football beginning Nov. 16.
"The ECAC hosted the first DIII Football Fest in 2015 to enhance the postseason experience and the momentum continues to build," Rollins elaborated. "We are excited to continue relationships with returning partners and explore new sponsorship opportunities, while also working with our membership to ensure that cost of participation will not be a limiting factor. We are fired up to host another first-class event for our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans."

LUBBOCK, Tex. -- The University of Delaware baseball team battled back from a late four-run deficit and later endured a lengthy rain delay in extra innings, but the Blue Hens ultimately dropped their second heartbreaker in as many days with a 6-5, 12-inning loss to 15th-ranked Arizona Saturday at Rip Griffin Park in the NCAA Baseball Lubbock Regional.
Delaware, which battled fifth-ranked and regional host Texas Tech in a 5-2 setback on Friday, ends its exhilarating 2017 season with a 34-23 record. Arizona, the 2016 College World Series runner-up, improved to 38-20 and advances to Sunday when the Wildcats will play the loser of Saturday night’s Texas Tech-Sam Houston State contest.
The marathon game, which included a 2:16 rain delay in the top of the 11th inning and ended six and a half hours after it started, saw both teams use five pitchers. The Wildcats finally won it in the 12th when Alfonso Rivas slugged an opposite field homer to left off Blue Hen closer Burk FitzPatrick (2-1), before Delaware’s rally in the bottom of the frame came up just short.
Calvin Scott led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield, and after Nick Patten flied out to left, Scott moved to second on a Jeremy Ake groundout. Doug Trimble then walked to put the winning run on base, but Wildcats pitcher Juan Aguilera (1-0) struck out Diaz Nardo looking on a fastball over the inside corner to shut the door.
The game remained scoreless through five innings, as Blue Hen starting pitcher Nick Spadafino allowed just three hits in the opening five frames while Arizona hurler Cameron Ming gave up only one.
JJ Matijevic then led off the top of the sixth with a single to center, and after he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jared Oliva, Colman Vila replaced Spadafino on the mound. Vila then retired Rivas on a lineout to left, but Cesar Salazar followed with an RBI single to leftcenter to put the Wildcats on the board.
However the Blue Hens immediately answered back in the bottom half as Jordan Glover legged out an infield single to lead off the frame, and following a sacrifice bunt by Scott, Patten lined a single to center to drive home Glover and knot the game at 1-1.
Arizona appeared to take control in the top of the seventh, as the Wildcats plated four runs on four hits and a pair of walks to jump in front 5-1. Nick Quintana led off with a single up the middle, and after pinch runner Sawyer Gieseke moved to second on a balk, Kyle Hinton took over on the mound for Delaware. But the first batter he faced was Kyle Lewis, who faked a bunt before lining a pitch down the leftfield line to chase home Gieseke.
Following a sacrifice bunt Cal Stevenson laced a double to deep rightcenter, allowing Lewis to score to make it a two-run game. Two walks sandwiched around a pop out loaded the bases with two away before Salazar lined a ball that hit the pitcher’s mound and bounced into centerfield, driving home two more as Arizona went up four.
Delaware went down in order in the bottom of the seventh and the first two batters were retired in the eighth, but the Blue Hens would not quit. Glover worked a walk, and after Scott ripped a double to left, Patten walked to load the bases. Michael Flynn then replaced Ming on the mound and Ake greeted him with a two-run single to left, although Ake was thrown out at second trying to advance on the play as Arizona took a 5-3 lead to the ninth.
After James Meeker set down the Wildcats in order Trimble opened the bottom of the ninth with a single to right, but Flynn then retired the next two Blue Hen batters. However Brian Mayer was hit by a pitch, and after Tylor Megill took over on the mound, Kevin Mohollen legged out an infield single to second base to load the bases.
With the season on the line, Glover then bounced a single up the middle into centerfield, driving home Trimble and pinch runner Matt McKeown to tie the game at 5-5. After an intentional walk to Scott, Patten flied out to deep center as the game went to extra innings.
After both teams went scoreless in the 10th, the game was delayed for over two hours due to a thunderstorm. Following the long break neither team could score in the 11th, before Rivera’s homer in the 12th proved to be the difference.
Glover finished 2 for 5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored for the Blue Hens, while Scott also had two hits and walked twice.
The game capped an outstanding season for Delaware, as the Blue Hens captured their first Colonial Athletic Association title and made their first NCAA Regional appearance since 2001.
Game Notes:
• Delaware played its third extra inning game of the season, and its longest since a 10-9 loss at Towson in 13 innings on May 13, 2016
• Glover notched his 22nd multi-hit game of the season
• Scott reached safely for the 27th consecutive game
• The Blue Hens and Arizona faced each other for the first time in school history
• Delaware played a Pac 12 school for the first time since a four-game series at Arizona State in May, 2011

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Announces Changes Within Recreation Services Staff

DATE: June 23, 2017

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak announced Friday several changes within her leadership team with the departure of Senior Associate AD Jake Olkkola, who has been named Harold Alfond Athletics Director at Colby College.

Olkkola, a native of Ossipee, N.H., has served at the University of Delaware as a member of the UD athletics senior administrative team since 2010 in the areas of recreation and student health & wellness services as well as finance and administration.

During his tenure, Olkkola also served as varsity sport administrator for numerous UD sport programs. He will begin serving at Colby, an NCAA Division III school in Waterville, Maine, in July.

"On behalf of our entire Athletics and Recreation staff, we want to thank Jake for his outstanding commitment to the University of Delaware and we wish him nothing but the best in his new role leading the athletics department at Colby," said Rawak. "During his time at Delaware, Jake has made significant contributions in areas that touch nearly every student and staff member on our campus. I know he will have that same positive impact at Colby."

With Olkkola's move to Colby, staff responsibility changes within the UD recreation department will take place this summer.

Delaware Senior Associate AD for Facilities, Operations, and Capital Projects Joe Shirley will now add oversight of the UD Ice Arena and Outdoor Aquatic Center to his responsibilities while Senior Associate AD for Health, Well Being, and Sport Performance Eric Laudano will now oversee the recreation services area. An associate athletic director who will directly oversee the recreation services area and report to Laudano will be hired later this year.

"We will continue our efforts to align functional areas and create synergies within Athletics and Recreations Services," said Rawak. "These changes will assure that we provide a seamless transition with Jake's departure and continue our approach to meeting the needs of students across campus."

The vibrant recreation program services the entire UD student body and focuses on student wellness, leadership development, and healthy engagement. Among its features are the Carpenter Sports Building, Rawstrom Natatorium. and numerous fitness centers for students and staff throughout campus.

The program sponsors 32 club sport teams and over 30 intramural leagues and tournaments. UD Club Sports teams captured national championships in women's lacrosse and men's volleyball during the 2016-17 academic year, finished as national runners-up in figure skating, and each year numerous teams compete in national championship tournaments.

Olkkola, who previously served on the athletics and recreation staffs at Harvard and LaSalle, oversaw the $25 million renovation and construction of 45,000-square-foot addition to the UD Carpenter Sports Building that was dedicated on Aug. 26, 2013.
