SUBJECT: Usher’s Big Night Leads University of Delaware Men’s Basketball To 80-70 Victory Over Delaware State

DOVER, Del. -- Blue Hen senior Davon Usher had another stellar outing with 23 points and eight rebounds as the University of Delaware men’s basketball team used a big second half to post an 80-70 victory over intrastate rival Delaware State Monday night at Memorial Hall.

Usher also handed out a season-high six assists and went 10 of 10 from the foul line for the Blue Hens, who improved to 3-3 on the season. Jarvis Threatt added 17 points and six rebounds, while Kyle Anderson reached double figures for the fifth straight game with 12 points on 4 of 6 long range shooting.

Carl Baptiste was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 10 points, while freshman Cazmon Hayes came off the bench to contribute a season-high nine points.

Kendall Gray scored 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting for the Hornets, who dropped their fourth straight game while dropping to 1-4 on the year. Casey Walker added 17 points on the night, while Tyshawn Bell chipped in with 12.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 6-1 in seven all-time trips to Dover, reached the 80-point mark for the fifth consecutive game.

After the Blue Hens took an early 6-4 lead on a pair of Anderson three-pointers, the Hornets used a 9-0 run to go in front 13-6 at the 12:44 mark of the first half. Delaware countered with a seven-point spurt to knot the game at 15-15, and following a Hornets basket, Threatt and Usher scored inside to put the Blue Hens back on top with eight and a half minutes on the clock.

Delaware would go without a field goal for the next seven minutes, but remained in front due to 9 of 10 free throw shooting during that stretch. The margin was a single point following a Bell layup with 1:35 left but two Devonne Pinkard free throws, a Baptiste layup and an Usher jumper just before the buzzer give Delaware its largest lead of the half at 32-25.

The Blue Hens stormed out of the gate in the second period, as two Baptiste baskets were followed by another Anderson triple as Delaware extended the advantage to 39-25 and forced a Hornets time out with 18:16 to play.

UD was still up 43-31 on a Baptiste layup but Delaware State erupted for an 8-0 run, pulling within 43-39 on a Walker layup at the 14:40 mark. However the Blue Hens immediately answered, as Threatt scored inside before Usher buried a three-pointer to increase the advantage back to nine with 13 and a half minutes to go.

Four minutes later Usher buried a triple to extend the margin to double figures, while a Hayes putback made it a 57-45 game with 7:55 remaining. UD continued to extend the lead, as three-pointers by Threatt, Usher and Hayes on consecutive possessions put Delaware in front 71-55 with 4:20 minutes to play.

The Hornets made one last run, as an 8-0 Delaware State run cut the Blue Hens’ lead to 73-66 at the 1:34 mark. But the Hornets would not get closer, as Delaware hit 5 of 6 free throws from there.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game, but we will learn from it,” said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. “We weren’t as sharp down the stretch as we need to be, but I’d rather learn from a win than a loss. Davon (Usher) has a very high basketball IQ, and everybody feeds off him due to his energy and positive attitude. I was really happy to see Cazmon (Hayes) take advantage of his minutes tonight as well.”

Effort Falls Just Short as University of Delaware Men¹s Basketball Drops 84-80
Thriller at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The
University of Delaware men’s basketball team battled Big East opponent Villanova
even through 37 minutes, but a late seven-point Wildcats run gave Villanova a
hard-fought 84-80 victory over the Blue Hens Friday night at The
Pavilion.

Delaware, which had its
two-game winning streak snapped while falling to 2-3 on the year, trailed 74-65
with 5:45 remaining before roaring back. Following a Jarvis Threatt
three-pointer, the Wildcats’ Daniel Ochefu converted a layup to put Villanova up
eight with 4:26 on the clock. But after Kyle Anderson drained a three-pointer,
Davon Usher scored inside and then buried a deep triple of his own to knot the
contest at 76-76 with 3:02 left.

However the Wildcats, who
improved to 4-0 on the year, took control with the pivotal 7-0 spurt. JayVaughn
Pinkston opened the run with a three-point play, and after two Ryan Arcidiacono
free throws, Pinkston added two foul shots to make it an 83-76 game with 37
seconds to play. Threatt scored a layup for the Blue Hens to end the spurt, but
Delaware would not seriously threaten from there.

The Blue Hens, utilizing a
six-man rotation, got another big effort from Usher, as the senior scored a
game-high 27 points while going 5 of 10 from three-point range. Anderson
contributed 17 points including four triples, while Threatt added 16 points and
dished out a career-best eight assists for the third consecutive game. Carl
Baptiste was the fourth UD player in double figures with 13 points, while he
paced the squad with eight rebounds.

JayVaughn Pinkston scored a
season-high 26 points including a 10 of 11 performance from the line to lead the
Wildcats, who are receiving votes in both of the national Top 25 polls this week
.James Bell contributed 16 points, while Darrun Hilliard added 15 and
Arcidiacono chipped in 14. Ochefu collected a game-high 11 rebounds as the
Wildcats held a 45-32 edge on the boards, leading to a 22-9 advantage in second
chance points.

“We have a tough group of
guys, and they have a significant amount of confidence regardless of who we are
playing,” said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. “We wanted to have a
chance with under four minutes left and we accomplished that, but we just
couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch. This was another step for our
program; we got better tonight, we just have to keep raising the
bar.”

Delaware connected on six of
its first 10 shots from the field and took an early 12-6 lead over the Wildcats
4:12 into the contest. However Villanova quickly answered with six straight
points, and regained the lead at 19-18 on a jumper by Arcidiacono.

The Wildcats later used a
9-0 run to go up eight, but the Blue Hens countered with 12 consecutive points
of their own to go in front 34-30 on a Devonne Pinkard three-pointer. Bell ended
the spurt with a jumper for the Wildcats, but Threatt and Baptiste answered with
buckets at the other end to put Delaware up 38-32 at the 4:19 mark. However
Villanova closed the half with an 11-2 surge of its own, as a Bell triple put
the Wildcats up 43-40 at the break.

After falling behind by four
points early in the second period, the Blue Hens battled back to take a 52-49
lead at the 15:52 mark following a four-point play by Usher.

Delaware led 54-50 after a
Threatt jumper, but the Wildcats used an 8-0 run to go back in front 58-54 on a
three-point play by Josh Hart.

The Blue Hens responded to
knot the contest at 60-60, before Villanova countered with a 6-0 run to take a
66-60 advantage and force a UD time out with 8:38 to play.

The lead grew to as much as
nine but Delaware would not go away, exploding for the 11-2 run that pulled the
Blue Hens even with three minutes to play. However the Wildcats answered with
the 7-0 spurt of their own to take the lead for good.

Game Notes:

? Delaware fell to 0-12
against Villanova, including losses in each of the last five years

? Tonight’s four-point
contest was the closest in series history

? Threatt is averaging 21.3
points and 8.0 assists over his last three games

? Baptiste and Anderson each
reached double figures for the fourth straight game

? Delaware limited the
Wildcats to just 5 of 25 shooting from behind the arc

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Editor-The Pavalion-Villanova University-Villanova, PA-Friday, November 22, 2013: The Villanova Wildcats improve their record to 4-0 on the season behind the 26 point performance of Jayvaughn Pinkston, 16 by James Bell, 15 by Darrun Hilliard, 14 by Ryan Arcidiacono improve their record to 4-0 as they defeated the Delaware Blue Hens at 2-3 by an 84-80 score.

[/B]
Monte Ross University of Delaware Mens Basketball Coach: "I thought it was a very entertaining game for 40 minutes and told our squad that I was proud of them as they brought a lot of good energy in the game it wasn't a secret that we can't score the basketball and went against a competitive Villanova defensive team that made a couple of turns in the game where they went on a run I would like to congratulate Jay Wright he has a good ball club." "When you have a person kind JayVaughn Pinkston he is a good physical force in there those guys have been through the wars and they understand when they need to make plays in those situations but our squad bounced back from certain situations and I've talked to our guys about how to play and also to respond on the runs we don't lack confidence if you saw Jarvis shot 1 for 5 in the first half we have guys that are tough and have Carl Baptiste have developed into good ball players they did a good job in the first half and got scittery in the second half pleased his (Carl) efforts and development overall and Jarvis and the rest of his teammates tell Carl to post up and he does just that." these guys in shootaround today my biggest concern from the Richmond game I told them we are ready to come here are to win the game in the last couple of years we weren't ready get us to the last 4 minutes my squad did it I was proud for getting to tha point." We didn't win another step in our progression in our game it is a marathon not a sprint and we have to continue to raise the bar and where the bar is set to play at that level"

[/B]
Jay Wright Villanova Head Coach: "Give Monte Ross and the Delaware Blue Hens a lot of credit they played great Jarvis Threatt controlled the game well for them in the first half he shot 1 for 5 and had 8 assists Davon Usher hit big shots for them and Kyle Anderson did well along with Kyle Baptiste was good in the first half they did well we didn't play that well I was proud of our squad on how we battled Delaware down the stretch and played the best basketball against the Hens and my players know how good they are we have some veterans who have stepped up down the stretch." "Daniel Ochafu contributed with 6 points and 11 rebounds he did a lot of good things along with 5 turnovers and my leader Jayvaughn Pinkston did great on our inside game as he was like a beast out there when you have a game like that he went 5 for 25 in his last 3 games for us." "Kyle Anderson kills us every year I enjoy him he is like a sniper he is ready to shoot the ball when he catches it the only way you can guard him is with Threatt and Baptiste that is why I think they have a good ballclub."

Delaware in defeat was led by Devon Usher with 27 points, Kyle Anderson with 17, 16 by Jarvis Threatt and 13 by Carl Baptiste.

SUBJECT: Courtni Green and Erika Brown Lead Three-Point Barrage as the University of Delaware Women’s Basketball Team Downs Monmouth, 72-58

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware knocked down a season-high 10 three-pointers and got double figure scoring from three different players en route to a 72-58 victory over Monmouth Tuesday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) hit a career-best five three-pointers and finished with 15 points while freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) added four three-pointers and 14 points. Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds as the Blue Hens (3-1) picked up their second straight game.

Monmouth (0-3) got 20 points from forward Shira Shecht and a double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds from Chevannah Paalvast.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Hawks took a one-point lead before Delaware rattled off eight straight points to go up, 22-15. The Blue Hens eventually took an 18-point advantage at the break at 41-23.

Monmouth opened the second half on an 11-2 run to come within six at the 14:23 mark, but UD bounced back quickly and took a 58-40 lead over the next four minutes.

In the remaining 10 minutes of the game, Delaware never led by less than 12 points en route to the 72-58 win.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? “I wasn’t worried about a hangover [from Friday night], the biggest thing that I was concerned with was that defensively we have to be a solid team and get better. We ran out to a big lead and then everybody just kind of took a sigh and we started doing things that are uncharacteristic of how we are suppose to play. We gave them some open looks and let them come right back in to the game and as a young team, yes, we’re happy we won, but they have to learn that defense has to be our staple. When we get later in to the season, there are no possessions that you can take off. We let a team crawl back in to it when we had the opportunity to slam the door.”

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan ? “We have people who are talented and can put the ball in the basket, so we need to look for everyone to be in double figures if possible. That’ll force defenses to play certain people and then others will be open. I think we’ve improved mentally over the last four games. We’ve gotten our heads straight and have learned what the physicality of college basketball looks like, especially for some of the younger players.”

Sophomore Courtni Green ? “It was very important to come out strong today. Just because we got the win over Wake Forest doesn’t mean that we can relax. We still have to be upbeat and play defense. On offense, it doesn’t matter your age or grade, if you can shoot the ball, Coach wants you to shoot the ball.”

Freshman Erika Brown ? “I think it’s really good when Court [Green] and I are in rhythm because the defense will think that Court is the shooter and then I’ll knock them down and then they think I’m the shooter. Now we’re both hitting threes and the other team is confused and don’t know what to do. I come in every game, play hard and try to contribute as much as I can for my team to win.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS

· Delaware, which has won 12 of its last 13 home games dating to last season, down Monmouth for the seventh straight time and takes a 7-1 all-time lead over the Hawks.

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- All five Blue Hens starters scored in double figures as the University of Delaware men’s basketball team won its second game in three days with an 89-74 triumph over Army Tuesday night at Christl Arena.

Delaware, which improved to 2-2 on the year, had yet another impressive offensive outing as the Blue Hens narrowly missed reaching the 90-point mark for the third consecutive contest. UD shot 47.3 percent from the floor, knocked down seven three-pointers, and held a 44-35 rebounding advantage in the all-around effort.

Army, which dropped to 1-3 on the campaign, shot a respectable 45.3 percent but was hampered by a 2 of 21 performance from behind the arc.

Blue Hen junior point guard Jarvis Threatt again led the way for Delaware with 21 points, while he dished out a career-high eight assists for the second straight game to go with six rebounds and four steals. Davon Usher added 16 points and eight boards, while Kyle Anderson had another strong outing with 16 points and a season-high seven rebounds.

The Delaware post players were also extremely effective, as Carl Baptiste contributed 14 points and a season-high tying nine rebounds, while sophomore Marvin King-Davis set his career-bests by recording 13 points and nine rebounds while blocking three shots.

Kyle Wilson, Kevin Ferguson and Dylan Cox all scored 14 points to lead Army, with Ferguson grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds to record the double-double.

Delaware trailed 6-2 early but quickly erupted for a 15-4 run, capped with a three-pointer by Threatt that made it 17-10, and led the rest of the way. Two and a half minutes later consecutive three-pointers by Anderson and Devonne Pinkard made it a 23-13 game at the 8:58 mark, while the Blue Hen lead grew to as much as 29-17 on a Threatt dunk.

The Black Knights closed to within six late in the half, before Threatt followed his own miss in the final seconds as Delaware took a 38-30 lead into the break.

Although both teams started the second half strong, the Blue Hens scored on their first six possessions of the period and used a quick 7-0 run to extend the margin to 51-37 with 16:43 left and force an Army timeout.

UD’s lead grew to 17 following an Usher free throw and a Baptiste jumper while an emphatic King-Davis dunk, a Threatt layup and an Anderson triple increased the margin to 63-40 with 12:21 to go.

The advantage grew to 74-48 at the 9:14 mark on an Anderson baseline jumper, and the Blue Hens went back up 26 at 78-52 on a Cazmon Hayes bucket with seven and a half minutes to play.

“No lead is safe with an Army team that shoots so many three-pointers, so we needed to do the necessary things to pull away, like playing solid defense and rebounding the basketball, and we did those things well tonight,” said eighth-year Delaware head coach Monte Ross. “Our scoring balance can really be attributed to Jarvis, for the second straight game he really controlled the tempo and got everybody involved. Marvin and Carl hit some big shots for us tonight, and anytime you can get that production from your big guys, that just opens things up for the guards.”

Game Notes:

? Delaware improved to 2-13 all-time vs. Army and notched its first victory in West Point

? The game was UD’s first visit to West Point since Dec. 5, 1983

? Baptiste reached double figures for the third straight game

? Threatt surpassed the 20-point mark for the second consecutive game

The Blue Hens, playing their first game without leading scorer Devon Saddler who is currently suspended from the team, were not affected offensively as Delaware shot 48.4 percent from the field, finished 8 of 11 from behind the arc and reached the 90-point mark for the second consecutive contest.

Du’Vaughn Maxwell paced the Pirates with 24 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the floor, while Deron Powers added 17 points and Emmanuel Okoroba notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hampton led 12-10 early but the Blue Hens used an 8-0 run, culminated with two Anderson three-pointers, to go up 18-12 five and a half minutes into the game. Two minutes later Barnett Harris converted the first two field goals of his career to put UD up nine, while a Threatt jumper and three-pointer on consecutive possessions made it a 30-16 game at the 10:19 mark.

The lead remained in double figures for most of the half, and after the Pirates closed within nine, Usher scored in the final seconds to put Delaware up 45-34 at the break.

The Blue Hens opened the second half with a quick 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the day at 52-34 with 18:10 to play when Threatt found Anderson for a layup.

Later Anderson buried a three-pointer to make it 59-44, and after the Pirates closed within 10, another 7-0 Blue Hen spurt increased the margin to 68-51 and forced a Hampton time out with 12:37 remaining.

It was still a 70-53 game following yet another Anderson bucket, but Hampton scored eight consecutive points to get within single digits. Baptiste hit an 18-foot jumper to put Delaware back up 11, but the Pirates used another 8-0 run to make it a 74-71 game with seven minutes to play.

Hampton again clawed with three at 76-73, but Anderson buried his sixth three-pointer of the day before King-Davis converted a tip-in to up the Blue Hen advantage to 81-73 with four minutes to go. Baptiste then added a free throw and a jumper to put Delaware up 11, and the Blue Hens were not threatened from there.

“I thought Jarvis did a magnificent job of getting everybody involved and controlling the game,” said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. “He really controlled the pace of the game and looked for his own shot as well. It was a phenomenal shooting effort by Kyle - he was really aggressive and looking for his shot. We also got across the board rebounding today, as we have all year. Anytime you can get a road win against a team that’s 2-0, that’s a big deal.”

Game Notes:

? Delaware improved to 5-1 all-time against Hampton, with five straight wins

? The Blue Hens are now a perfect 3-0 at the HU Convocation Center

? Hampton had allowed just 64.0 points during its first two games

? Four different Blue Hens have scored at least 24 points during UD’s last two games

? Delaware is back on the road Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tilt at Army

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women’s Basketball Gets Glimps of Bright Future, Rallies to Defeat Wake Forest 71-61

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- On a night when the University of Delaware women's basketball team honored its glorious past, the Blue Hens got a nice look at its promising future.

Down by as many as nine points midway through the second half, the young Blue Hens rallied back in a big way and treated a crowd of 2,401 to a 71-61 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference visitor Wake Forest Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Senior forward Kelsey Buchanan led the way for Delaware with 22 points and nine rebounds, but the Blue Hens got big efforts from its younger players too as freshman guard Erika Brown scored 13 of her season-high 18 points in the second half, sophomore guard Courtni Green knocked down 12 points, and freshman forward Shanice Johnson contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Hens (2-1) bounced back from a 70-58 loss to Temple in its home opener last Tuesday to down the Deamon Deacons (1-2) for the second straight year.

Wake Forest guard Chelsea Douglas was nearly unstoppable as she poured in a season-high 30 points, including 6 of 11 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Dearic Hamby added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Millesa Calicott added a career-high 11 points.

“This was a very good first step for this group,” said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. “They listened, stayed together, and did a great job of staying within themselves. Our seniors did a great job and our young kids played really well too. Courtni (Green) is capable of making any shot on the court and is really coming into her own.”

Delaware started the night by honoring the 2012-13 squad that went 32-4, won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the second straight year, and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Among the six seniors who came back to celebrate was WNBA Rookie of the Year Elena Delle Donne, a three-time All-American who finished her UD career last season as the No. 5 scorer in NCAA history with 3,309 points.

The Blue Hens trailed for almost the entire first half, going down by as many as seven points early and trailing 30-25 at the half. After the Hens rallied back to tie the game early in the second half at 35-35, Wake took control and grabbed a nine-point advantage at 44-35 with 12:30 remaining.

But Delaware caught fire, outscoring Wake Forest 24-7 over the next eight minutes to take a 59-51 lead with 5:40 left. Green and Brown each scored eight points during the run while Buchanan netted the final six. The Hens connected on 7 of 8 free throws over the final 1:18 to stay in front.

Delaware will return to action next Tuesday, Nov. 19, when the Hens host Monmouth at 7 p.m.

SUBJECT: Kendall Anthony’s Free Throws in Final Seconds Give Richmond 71-69 Victory Over Delaware Men’s Basketball in Season-Opening Thriller

DATE: November 8, 2013

kmt:

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond guard Kendall Anthony hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining as the Spiders edged the University of Delaware men’s basketball team, 71-69, in both teams’ season-opener Friday night at the Robins Center.

The Blue Hens (0-1) trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, and were still down six with 2:46 remaining. But Delaware rallied, as Jarvis Threatt drained three free throws before Davon Usher buried a three-pointer from the right wing to pull the Blue Hens even with 1:18 to go.

Usher then made a steal at the other end, and following a UD timeout, Threatt was fouled on a drive to the basket with :30.2 to play. However Threatt missed a pair from the foul line, giving the Spiders (1-0) a final chance. Following a loose ball out of bounds with 2.3 seconds on the clock, UD guard Kyle Anderson was called for a holding foul.

Anthony then buried both foul shots, while Devon Saddler’s three-pointer from just past half court bounced off the back rim.

Saddler, a first team Preseason All-CAA selection, led the Blue Hens with 17 points while Threatt, a second team preseason pick, added 14 points and hit 12 foul shots. Usher, a Mississippi Valley State transfer making his Blue Hen debut, posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Cedrick Lindsay paced Richmond with 20 points, while Alonzo Nelson-Ododa added 13 and Terry Allen contributed 11 for the Spiders.

Delaware nearly pulled out the victory despite shooting just 4 of 21 from three-point line, although the Blue Hens did connect on 27 of 37 free throws. Richmond was also off the mark from deep, as UD limited the Spiders to a 3 of 19 performance from behind the arc.

“Jarvis has proven time and time again that he’s the guy we want at the free throw line, and he’s iced many games for us from the line,” said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. “We did a good job of drawing fouls all night, but when you’re on the road you have to make teams pay. If we do what we need to do from the line earlier, it doesn’t come down to the end. We are an experienced group, and it says a lot about our team to come back twice in the second half.”

Delaware used an early 9-1 run to take a 13-9 lead in the first half, and the game remained tight throughout the rest of the period before Richmond took a slim 32-31 edge into the break.

An Anderson three-pointer brought Delaware within a pair early in the second half, but Richmond quickly ran off seven consecutive points to go in front 45-36 and force a Blue Hen timeout with 17:03 remaining.

Delaware responded to hold the Spiders without a field goal for three and a half minutes but the Blue Hens went cold offensively themselves, as five straight Richmond points extended the lead back to double digits at 53-42 at the 11:12 mark following a Lindsay runner in the paint.

UD would not go away, as Usher converted a layup and then found Saddler inside to cap a 6-0 spurt and make it a 55-50 contest with 8:06 to play. The Blue Hens kept coming, as an Anderson three-pointer and a Saddler bucket put Delaware in front 61-59 with 5:08 on the clock.

The Blue Hens were again up two a half minute later, but Allen scored inside before Anthony drilled a three-pointer to put Richmond back on top, 66-63, at the 3:45 mark.

The Spiders’ Derrick Williams added a free throw and a layup to increase the lead to six before the Blue Hens countered with six straight points to tie the contest, setting up the dramatic finish.

Game Notes:

? Delaware has lost eight straight season openers

? Marvin King-Davis went 8 of 8 from the foul line while tying his career-high with eight points

? Saddler needs 13 points to reach 1,700 for his career

? Richmond has won 14 straight season openers

? The Spiders held a 41-35 rebounding advantage

? The game marked the teams’ first meeting since 1995

? Delaware plays its home opener Sunday vs. Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.

SUBJECT: Two-time Defending Champion University of Delaware Women's Basketball Squad Picked Fifth in CAA Preseason Poll; Richards on All-CAA Team

DATE: October 22, 2013

mh:

BALTIMORE, Md. ? Coming off of back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships, the University of Delaware women's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the league's preseason poll, as announced Tuesday morning at the CAA Basketball Media Day.

Additionally, senior guard Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) was chosen to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team.

James Madison, which returns three starters from last year's 25-11 team, was selected to win the 2014 CAA Women's Basketball title according to a vote of the league's head coaches. The Dukes were followed in the voting by Drexel, which captured the 2013 Women's National Invitation Tournament championship, Northeastern and Towson. The Blue Hens were followed by Hofstra and league newcomer College of Charleston. UNCW and William & Mary rounded out the poll in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

"When you've won two consecutive championships, it certainly makes you want more," remarked Delaware head coach Tina Martin, who is in her 18th season with the Hens. "On paper, all of the rankings look about right, but the bottom line is, they don't give out rings for preseason rankings. The rings are given out at the end, and that's what matters."

The Blue Hens, who are currently amidst a 42-game CAA winning streak (regular season and tournament), dating to the 2011-12 season, lost seven seniors to graduation, including a total of over 6,500 points, 3,200 rebounds and 1,100 assists. A squad that reached the NCAA Sweet 16 a season ago, Delaware will field 11 freshmen and sophomores in 2013-14 with just three juniors and seniors.

"We have a lot of growing to do and we certainly have to catch up on experience," Martin commented. "This season is new and fresh and we're going to take it with that approach. There are a lot of question marks right now for us, but at the same time, any new challenge makes for an exciting experience for both the players and coaches. The group that we have right now is excited and they want to prove that they can compete and play well. They're hungry to show the conference that we can still compete and try to win a third straight championship."

Richards, the team's lone returning starter, averaged 5.5 points overall while scoring 6.2 points in league play last season. Additionally, Richards dished out 1.8 assists per contest last year.

"Akeema is going to have to change her role a little bit this season," stated Martin. "Certainly, she has to step up and be more of a vocal leader, but she will also have to take some of the offensive burden. She has a great pull-up jumpshot and has a good feel for the game. Akeema is going to wear many, many hats this season."

JMU's Kirby Burkholder was selected as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.

The league's television schedule was also announced at Media Day, with the Blue Hens being featured once during regular season action via CAA-TV and Comcast SportsNet when Delaware hosts Northeastern on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The 2014 CAA Women's Basketball Championship will be held March 13-16 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Basketball

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Jarvis Threatt and Davon Usher
combined for 46 points, half of them from the foul line, and the University of
Delaware never trailed the entire afternoon as the Blue Hens ran past Robert
Morris for an 86-67 men's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the Bob
Carpenter Center.

Threatt scored 24 points, dished out a game-high five
assists, and made three steals and Usher contributed 22 points and five steals
as Delaware (4-3) won for the second straight game and for the fourth time in
the last five games. The duo also combined to knock down 23 of 29 free throw
attempts.

Delaware, which scored 50 points in the second half,
surpassed the 80-point mark for the sixth straight game, the longest streak by a
Blue Hen team since March of 1999 and just the third time in school history that
UD has put together a streak that long.

"To
put up 50 points in the second half against a team that prides itself on defense
is monumental," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "We weathered a few storms
today, stuck with it, and were able to get some separation. I was very happy
with our defensive effort in the first half, and when they cut the lead to four
in the second half, we were able to get some stops and extend the
lead."

Robert Morris (3-5) lost for the third straight game
and for the fifth time its last six outings despite a game and season-high 25
points from guard Karvel Anderson. Anderson knocked down five three-pointers but
forward Mike McFadden (11 points) was the only other Colonial player to reach
double figures.

The
game was Delaware's final home appearance until New Years Day as the Blue Hens
open a six-game road swing Dec. 3 at Charleston Southern.

Delaware center Carl Baptiste also recorded his first
career double-double Saturday as he scored 13 points and pulled 11 rebounds to
lead a balanced effort. Devonne Pinkard added a season-high nine points and Kyle
Anderson contributed seven points to pace the Blue Hens.

The
Blue Hens shot a sizzling 56 percent from the field (14 of 25) in the second
half and finished at 52 percent for the game (27 of 52) to keep the Colonials at
bay. Delaware also outrebounded Robert Morris 34-28 and outshot them 28-16 from
the foul line.

Delaware jumped out to an 8-2 lead three minutes into
the game and led by as many as 11 points at 18-7 before the Colonials rallied to
cut the lead to 25-23 on an Anderson three-pointer with 5:00 left in the stanza.
But the Hens regrouped and outscored the Colonials 11-4 the rest of the way to
take a 36-27 lead at the break.

Robert Morris made another strong run at the lead
early in the second half as the Colonials used a 6-1 spurt to pull to within
four points at 45-41 with 15:20 left to play. But that was as close as they
would get the rest of the way as Delaware broke away on a 10-2 run to push the
lead back to double figures and led by at least nine points the remainder of the
afternoon.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Blue Hen junior Kyle Anderson scored a career-high 29 points and tied the school record by hitting eight three-pointers as the University of Delaware men's basketball team held off Charleston Southern for an impressive 85-80 victory over the Buccaneers Tuesday night at the Buc Dome.

Anderson finished 10 of 12 from the field and 8 of 10 from three-point range, tying the UD single game three-point record also held by Billy Wells and Jawan Carter. Carl Baptiste added his second straight double-double with a career-high 17 points to go with 11 rebounds for the Blue Hens, who won their third straight and fifth of six while improving to 5-3 on the year.

Jarvis Threatt contributed 18 points and six assists for Delaware while Davon Usher chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds for the Blue Hens, who finished 11 of 22 from three-point range and knocked down 20 of 26 free throws. UD reached the 80-point mark for the seventh consecutive game, one shy of the school record set in 1999.

Charleston Southern, which dropped to 3-4 on the season, was led by Will Saunders and Sheldon Strickland who scored 15 points apiece. Arlon Harper added 13 points while Matt Kennedy and Cedrick Bowen contributed 11 each for the Buccaneers, who entered the game ranked second in the nation in scoring but were held 14 points below their average.

CSU, who shot 50 percent from behind the arc during the Bucs' 95-93 win over the Blue Hens on Nov. 10 in Newark, was limited to just 6 of 25 shooting from behind the arc Tuesday.

"This was a tremendous win, and a very satisfying victory," said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "Our guys did a heck of a job keeping their composure and poise, and really stuck with it down the stretch. I couldn't be prouder of the effort tonight; this was an outstanding win."

"Jarvis (Threatt) did a great job of getting me the ball, and I felt good tonight," Anderson said. "This was a small, loud gym with soft rims, and it was fun playing here."

After falling behind 4-0 in the first minute, UD scored six straight points and went up 15-11 on an Anderson three-pointer at the 11:36 mark of the first half. The Bucs battled back to knot the contest at 22-22 but Delaware used a quick seven-point spurt to go back in front, while Anderson again connected from deep to make it a 32-24 UD lead with 3:20 to play.

Following a Charleston Southern bucket, Anderson drained two more triples from the left corner to extend UD's advantage to 38-26 and force a Bucs timeout at the 2:11 mark. CSU responded with a 7-0 run, but Threatt scored in the paint with three seconds on the clock as Delaware took a 40-33 advantage into the break.

The Blue Hens then exploded out of the second half gate, using a quick 13-2 run to go up 53-35 and force a Bucs timeout with 17:48 to play. The Bucs closed to within 15, but Delaware went back up 20 at 64-44 on a long two-pointer from Anderson with 12 and a half minutes remaining.

An 11-2 run pulled the Bucs within 66-55 at the 9:44 mark but Usher hit a tough turnaround jumper and Baptiste added two free throws, pushing the lead back to 15. The Blue Hens led by double digits for nearly the next five minutes, before a Matt Kennedy three-pointer made it 81-73 with 2:39 to play.

Threatt hit a free throw for the Blue Hens, but Kennedy converted a layup and Strickland buried a three-pointer as the Bucs closed within 82-78 with 1:19 on the clock.
CSU had a chance after Threatt missed inside, but two Bucs three-pointers were off the mark and Baptiste grabbed the defensive rebound. The UD senior then hit one of two free throws at :20.6, and after another CSU miss from three, Baptiste added two more at :08.1 to put the game away.

Delaware will look to extend its winning streak on Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Blue Hens head to ACC opponent Notre Dame to face former UD head coach Mike Brey.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Head Coach Tina Martin Announces Signing of Four High School Standouts

DATE: December 3, 2013

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball program has signed four high school standouts from the class of 2014 as announced by head coach Tina Martin today.

Makeda Nicholas, Alexis Sears, Chastity Taylor and Kiersten West will all join the Blue Hens as freshmen for the 2014-15 campaign.

"I'm really excited for this class to join our Blue Hen family," stated Martin, who is currently in her 18th season at Delaware. "In their own way they each bring something special to the table and I believe that all four will continue to help build on our winning tradition at UD."

Nicholas, a 6-1 forward, averages 16.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 6.7 blocks per game for North Babylon High School (N.Y.). The New York native and All-State selection also adds 5.4 steals and 2.6 assists for the Bulldogs.

"Makeda is an outstanding forward who is very versatile and talented," Martin commented. "She can shoot the three, put the ball on the floor and post up. I'm really excited about what she can bring to our program."

A forward/center combo, Sears will join the Blue Hens from Lenape High School in New Jersey. The 6-2 Medford, N.J. native averages 12.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in addition to 3.5 blocks. Sears is a strong player that will bring a presence for Delaware in the paint.

"Alexis is a post player who plays with her back to the basket," remarked Martin. "She is strong and rebounds the ball really well. Alexis also has a great personality and a lot of enthusiasm. She will definitely be a fan-favorite from the get-go because of her personality and infectious smile. I think Alexis will do a great job for us inside and definitely help our post game."

Taylor is a 5-9 guard/forward from St. Anthony's High School (N.Y.). A two-time All-Long Island honoree, Taylor helped lead the Friars to a league title and the CHSAA Class AA state tournament in 2013. She currently averages 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals per game.

"Chastity is a combo guard who can do a little bit of everything," Martin said. "She handles the ball well and is a very good three-point shooter. Chastity is a good athlete and I believe she is a young lady who will continue to get better because of her ability to create her own shot and get shots for other people."

A native of Coram, N.Y., West averages 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks for Longwood High School. The 5-9 slashing guard will add strong defense and perimeter shooting to the Hens. West helped lead Longwood to a berth in the Class AA playoffs and will join her AAU teammates at Delaware in Nicholas and Taylor.

"Kiersten is a very athletic two-guard in addition to being a lefty, which I like tremendously because it opens up the floor a little bit more," noted Martin. "She can shoot the three and is a very creative player that can create her own shot. Additionally, she is a very good defensive player."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Unable to hold on in 84-80 Overtime Loss at Princeton

DATE: December 15, 2013

mh:

PRINCETON, N.J. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team had five players score at least 12 points Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Hens suffered heartbreak in an 84-80 overtime loss at Princeton.

Delaware, which had not played a game in two weeks, saw career games from senior Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Jade Clark (Ashburn, Va.), who posted 17 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied a career-best 14 points in the loss for the Blue Hens, who snapped a five-game losing streak to move to 6-2 overall on the year.

Down by two at the half and seven within the first four minutes of the second stanza, Delaware went on a 10-1 lead with 11:42 remaining in regulation to take its first lead of the game since the 2-0 mark.

With 1:30 left on the clock, the Blue Hens took the 74-70 lead off of a jumper in the paint from Richards. The Tigers were able to regain the deficit off of a layup from Blake Dietrick and free throws from Alex Wheatley to tie things at 74-74 and send the game into overtime.

Richards gave UD the first points of the extra period off of a jumper at the 3:53 mark to go up, 76-74. Princeton would tie things once again before Richards drained two from the charity stripe to take the 78-76 advantage.

Amanda Berntsen tied things at 78-78 before Dietrick nailed a three from the left side to give the Tigers the lead for good at 81-78 with just over a minute remaining.

Delaware would have two players foul out in the final minute and Princeton made three free throws en route to victory.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the second half, as there were 11 total lead changes and 14 tied scores.

Dietrick led all scorers with 22 points while Kristen Helmstetter tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds for Princeton (6-4).

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "Defensively, we had some letdowns when the shot clock was running down and we didn't have good help side defense. A lot of points were scored today and I keep telling the team, our defense is going to save us or break us. Offensively, it's the first time we've really been in a tight game for these kids and at times, we executed well and at times we didn't. We have to keep working on more end of game stuff and our defensive rotation and in the end, we will become a better basketball team."

HEN SCRATCHINGS

· Delaware snapped a five-game winning streak and suffered its first loss away from the Bob Carpenter Center this season.

FARGO, N.D. -- North Dakota State guard Taylor Braun scored 33 points as the Bison defeated the University of Delaware men's basketball team, 85-66, in a BlackRock Gotham Classic contest Monday night at the Bison Sports Arena.

North Dakota State, which improved to 8-4 on the season, shot 52.9 percent from the field and led by double figures during the entire second half. The Blue Hens dropped their second consecutive game as Delaware fell back to the .500 mark at 5-5 on the year.

Braun, finished 9 of 14 from the field and 13 of 15 from the foul line while grabbing seven boards for the Bison, which held a 38-29 rebounding advantage. Marshall Bjorklund added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Lawrence Alexander was the third NDSU player in double figures with 11 points to go with four assists.

The Blue Hens were paced by senior guard Devon Saddler, who returned from a seven-game absence to pour in 24 points off the bench. Saddler, who did not start for the first time in his four-year career, knocked down 9 of 13 shots from the floor and buried three from behind the arc. Carl Baptiste narrowly missed his third double-double of the campaign with 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds, while Jarvis Threatt chipped in 10 points and four assists.

Delaware, returning from a nine-day break due to final exams, shot just 39.7 percent from the field and was 5 of 22 from three-point range. The UD starting guard trio of Threatt, Davon Usher and Kyle Anderson combined to go just 9 of 37 from the floor including 2 of 14 from deep.

"Credit North Dakota State, I thought they played a really good ballgame tonight," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "We were not sharp, and missed a lot of shots we normally make. I was proud of the guys' effort; they fought back to within 13 and had a great look at a three-pointer, it just didn't go down. We got a bunch of good looks tonight, but just weren't able to knock them down. Devon (Saddler) was excited to be back, and it showed in his play."

Both teams executed offensively through the first 14 minutes of the contest, as a layup by Threatt knotted the contest at 28-28 with six minutes to play in the half. However Delaware went scoreless over the next three minutes and the Bison took advantage, using a 10-0 surge to go up 38-28 on two Braun free throws at the 3:14 mark.

The Blue Hens endured a stretch which included 1 of 6 shooting and five turnovers, and trailed by as many as 13 before Saddler hit an off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer to bring Delaware within 43-33 at the break.

However NDSU opened the second half by scoring the first 10 points of the period, taking a 53-33 advantage with 14:42 to play following a fastbreak dunk by Braun.

UD missed its first seven field goal attempts of the half, finally getting on the board when Saddler scored in the paint at the 14:25 mark.

The Blue Hens slowly narrowed the gap, and eventually pulled within 11 points at 74-63 with 4:21 left on an Usher basket. But Braun countered with a pair of runners off the glass to put the Bison back up 15, as Delaware could never get the deficit into single digits.

Delaware returns to action on Wednesday when the Blue Hens take on third-ranked Ohio State in Columbus. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

Game Notes

? The contest was UD's second game of four in BlackRock Gotham Classic

? Jarvis Threatt surpassed the 900-point mark for his career

? NDSU shot over 50 percent for the sixth time this season

? The game was UD's first ever contest in the state of North Dakota

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State forward LaQuinton Ross score a game-high 19 points while center Amir Williams added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds as the third-ranked Buckeyes held off a pesky effort from the University of Delaware to post a 76-64 men's basketball victory over the Blue Hens in a BlackRock Gotham Classic game Wednesday night at Value City Arena.

Ohio State remained perfect on the season by improving to 11-0, with all but one of those games taking place in Columbus. Delaware, playing its third top-three ranked team in school history, dropped its third straight game while falling to 5-6 on the campaign.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. chipped in 14 points, Aaron Craft added 12 and Amedeo Della Valle recorded 10 for the Buckeyes, who put five players in double figures. The Blue Hens limited Ohio State to just 40.7 percent shooting from the field, but the Buckeyes held a 46-30 rebounding advantage and went 22 of 32 from the foul line.

Blue Hen senior Devon Saddler led Delaware in scoring for the second straight game by posting 17 points off the bench, while junior Jarvis Threatt contributed an all-around effort of 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Kyle Anderson had nine points on three triples for Delaware, while Davon Usher chipped in with eight points and seven boards.

Delaware shot 43.9 percent from the floor and knocked down seven three-pointers, but was hurt by a 7 of 15 performance from the free throw line.

"Congratulations to Ohio State, I though they played a terrific ballgame tonight," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "I thought our guys stood toe to toe with what I'll say is the best team in the country. We didn't shrink in what was a tremendous atmosphere, but were uncharacteristic from the foul line. Coming in we realized how good defensively Ohio State is, but our guys are confident and think they can drive to the basket on anybody."

Delaware jumped out to an early 9-3 lead on a reverse layup by Usher but Ohio State rallied, as the Buckeyes used a 7-0 run to go in front 13-12 on a Ross layup at the 13:03 mark of the first half.

Consecutive three-pointers by Devonne Pinkard and Saddler put the Blue Hens back up three, while a baseline jumper by Marvin King-Davis gave Delaware a 26-25 lead with three and a half minutes remaining. However the Blue Hens would go scoreless the rest of the way, as the Buckeyes scored the final 12 points of the period to take a 37-26 advantage into the break.

A Threatt layup and an Anderson three-pointer made it a nine-point game early in the second half, but Ohio State answered with five straight points to go up 45-31 with 15:50 to play. Delaware got back within 10 when Anderson knocked down another long-range jumper, before the Buckeyes used another five-point surge to take a 55-40 advantage at the 11:36 mark.

After Delaware cut the deficit to nine at 63-54 following an Usher layup with 5:57 to play, the Buckeyes again scored five straight to go back up 14 with 4:25 remaining. The Blue Hens made a final push as Carl Baptiste converted a tip-in before Saddler scored twice, making it a 70-62 game with 1:47 left. But Smith Jr. buried a baseline jumper and added two free throws on the Buckeyes' next possession to put the game away for Ohio State.

Delaware will look to get back to the .500 mark on Saturday when the Blue Hens face Bryant at approximately 9:30 p..m at Madison Square Garden in their final game of the BlackRock Gotham Classic.

Game Notes

? Ohio State improved to 3-0 all-time vs. Delaware

? Delaware fell to 0-17 vs. Top 10 teams and 0-29 vs. Top 25 teams

? The Blue Hens have lost all eight games to Big Ten opponents

? Monte Ross coached his first game vs. a Big Ten opponent

BETHLEHEM, Pa. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team forced 21 Youngstown State University turnovers Friday evening, which resulted in 31 total points as the Blue Hens defeated the Penguins, 69-48, on the first day of the Christmas City Classic, hosted at Stabler Arena by Lehigh University.

With the win, Delaware (7-2) advances to Saturday's championship game against the Mountain Hawks (7-2), who picked up an 87-78 win over Vermont earlier Friday.

Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) led UD in scoring once again as she put up 17 points and five rebounds against YSU. Classmate Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists while sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) collected 10 points, three rebounds and three assists for the Hens.

Redshirt freshman Jodi Salyer (Roanoke, Va.) earned the first start of her career against the Penguins and responded with career-bests of six assists, six points, and three steals.

Sophomore Jade Clark (Ashburn, Va.) led all players with a career-high nine rebounds, eight of which were on the defensive end.

Heidi Schlegel led the Penguins (3-7) with 17 points while Jenna Hirsch and Monica Touvelle each added eight of their own in the loss.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "It's still frustrating at times as we're young and sometimes we just don't get it yet. We just have to keep rolling with it, eventually the light bulb will go on. I love these kids and I love the fact that we're winning games, but we still have a long way to get where I want us to be. We'll take the win and play against a really good Lehigh team tomorrow, which is exactly what we wanted to do. We wanted to get to the championship game and have this young group play for their first championship."

Senior Guard Akeema Richards ? "At halftime, coach was making sure that we put a better emphasis on defense in the second half. We decided to switch up on some screens, which made things easier on us."

[On her personal scoring efforts]: "I have a lot more confidence this year after working out this summer. My confidence continues to grow and with that, my shot is coming along well."

NEW YORK -- Blue Hen junior guard Jarvis Threatt scored nine of the Blue Hens' 13 points in overtime as the University of Delaware men's basketball team held off Bryant, 108-107, in a BlackRock Gotham Classic thriller Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

Threatt finished with a season-high 29 points, hit 10 free throws and dished out four steals while playing all 45 minutes for the Blue Hens, who snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 6-6 on the year. Davon Usher added 25 points, eight rebounds and four steals in 44 minutes on the floor, while Devon Saddler was the third Blue Hen over 20 points as he poured in 23 including a 4 of 4 performance from behind the arc.

Marvin King-Davis enjoyed the best night of his career as he posted career-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds, going a perfect 8 of 8 from the field and knocking down both of his free throw attempts. Carl Baptiste was the fifth player in double figures with 10 points for Delaware, which surpassed the century mark for the first time since a 110-66 win over Northeastern on Mar. 4, 2001.

Bryant, which dropped to 7-6 on the season, was led by Dyami Starks who scored 35 points and buried 8 of 9 three-point attempts. Alex Francis contributed 32 points for the Bulldogs, while Corey Maynard added 14 and Dan Garvin had 10.

Bryant shot 56.9 percent from the field including 11 of 18 from three-point range, while Delaware was nearly as impressive by shooting 49.4 percent for the night.

"We have a lot of work to do on the defensive end, but we found a way to win the game," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "We were down late in regulation, but I'm really happy we found a way to pull out the victory. Everybody stepped up big tonight, and we needed all of their contributions. Marvin (King-Davis) had the best game of his career tonight and his double-double was huge for us."

The teams went to the extra session tied at 95-95, and after Delaware led by four in overtime following a Threatt jumper, Francis scored twice to pull Bryant even at 101-101 with 1:19 remaining. However Threatt then drained two free throws, and after a Starks miss, Threatt buried another pair from the stripe. Usher then came up with a steal, and after getting fouled, he hit a pair to put Delaware up 107-101 with :19.4 to go.

After Starks hit a three-pointer Threatt hit one of two from the line to put the game away, before another Starks triple just before the buzzer accounted for the final points.

The Blue Hens trailed 14-9 early on before a quick seven-point run put Delaware on top for the first time, while a baseline jumper by Threatt increased UD's lead to 26-21 and forced a Bryant time out with 9:40 left in the first half.

Bryant scored 11 of the final 13 points of the first half to take a 43-40 halftime lead, and the Bulldogs went up as much as eight in the second period before a 7-0 Delaware run made it a 57-56 game with 14:56 remaining.

The Blue Hens finally pulled even at 69-69 on a Kyle Anderson tip-in at the 10:04 mark, and Delaware went back in front 74-73 when Usher canned a free throw with 8:27 to play.

The game went back and forth until the teams were knotted at 82-82, while Saddler drained a three-pointer to put the Blue Hens up three with 4:50 on the clock. The Bulldogs answered with four straight points to go back ahead, but Usher knocked down three free throws as UD went back up a pair with 3:34 left.

Bryant scored five straight points, before Usher hit two from the line and King-Davis scored on a putback to give the Blue Hens a 92-91 edge at the 1:18 mark. After two Bulldogs free throws, Usher followed his own miss with :46.9 left and Anderson added one from the line to put Delaware up a pair. However Francis scored inside with :0.8 left, sending the game to overtime.

Delaware will take a nine-day holiday break before traveling to Saint Bonaventure on Dec. 30 for a 5 p.m. tipoff in Olean, N.Y.

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team whittled a 16-point deficit to seven with under three minutes to play, but the Blue Hens' comeback attempt fell short as St. Bonaventure held on to defeat Delaware, 80-73, in non-conference action Monday night at the Reilly Center.

The Bonnies, who won their second consecutive game and remained perfect in five home contests this season, improved to 9-4 on the year. Matthew Wright led St. Bonaventure with 23 points, while Youssou Ndoye added 15 points and six blocks. Charlon Kloof contributed nine points and seven assists for the Bonnies, who shot 52.3 percent from the field and handed out a season-high 23 assists.

Junior guard Kyle Anderson led Delaware with 23 points, including 20 after halftime, while going 7 of 12 from three-point range. Anderson, the CAA leader in three-pointers made and three-point percentage, fell one triple short of the UD single game record, a mark he tied earlier this year at Charleston Southern. Devon Saddler reached double figures for the fourth consecutive game with 18 points, while Davon Usher posted his second double-double of the campaign by contributing 17 points and a game-best 10 rebounds.

Carl Baptiste chipped in with eight points and nine boards for the Blue Hens, who fell to 6-7 on the year and shot just 38.4 percent from the field during the contest. Delaware was playing its sixth consecutive game outside of Newark, and will return home on Wednesday to host Liberty at 3 p.m. in a New Year's Day matchup.

"Wright pretty much had his way in terms of driving the ball into the lane," Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross remarked. "Ndoye was a load for us to defend, and really battled Carl (Baptiste) tonight. If we want to be successful in March, we know we have to improve on the defensive end of the floor. It will be good to get this bad taste out of our mouth and rectify this loss on Wednesday."

Delaware led 5-2 early on but then missed its next nine field goal attempts, as the Bonnies held the Blue Hens scoreless for five and a half minutes while using an 11-0 run to take an eight-point cushion at the 13:16 mark.

The Blue Hens still trailed by eight at 30-22 following an Usher basket with 4:30 on the clock, but the Bonnies used a 10-4 spurt to go up 14 points in the final minute of the period. Usher scored just before the buzzer, his sixth field goal of the half, as Delaware closed within 40-28 at the break.

After going down 15 early in the second half, Delaware battled to within 49-41 at the 14:51 mark following an Usher layup and an Anderson three-pointer. Anderson knocked down his third triple of the half to again make it an eight-point contest at 55-47, but the Bonnies answered with eight consecutive points to go up a game-high 16 with 8:53 to play.

The Blue Hens would not quit, as a Saddler three-point play and a three-pointer by Anderson cut the deficit to 73-66 with 2:52 to go. St. Bonaventure misfired on its next two possessions but Delaware could not take advantage, as Usher was denied inside before Saddler misfired on a drive down the lane. The Blue Hens did pull within six at 75-69 with 32 seconds to go, but the Bonnies broke a full court press before Ndoye converted a three-point play to put the game away.

Game Notes

? The Blue Hens dropped their fourth straight road game

? Delaware and St. Bonaventure have now split two all-time meetings

? Saddler needs just two points to reach 1,800 for his career

? Saddler surpassed 600 field goals in his career

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Outrebounded by St. John's in 61-58 Loss to Close Non-Conference Slate

DATE: December 30, 2013

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? In a game that featured 18 lead changes, the University of Delaware women's basketball squad fell just short Monday evening as St. John's University came out on top with a 61-58 victory over the Blue Hens to close out non-conference action at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The main storyline came on the boards as the Hens (8-3) were outrebounded, 41-28, by the Red Storm (8-4). The last time Delaware grabbed 28 or fewer rebounds came on Jan. 13, 2011 when the Hens picked up 28 against William & Mary.

With three minutes left in the game, the two teams held a 54-54 tie before St. John's went on a 5-0 run to lead, 59-54 with just over a minute remaining. Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) knocked down two free throws to cut the lead to three with 23 seconds on the clock before classmate Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) drained two more to come within one at 59-58.

The Red Storm's Keylantra Langley gave the Red Storm two more free throws to go up, 61-58 with 12 seconds left.

Delaware failed to tie the game as freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) just missed a three-pointer as time expired.

The Blue Hens, who returned to the Bob Carpenter Center for the first time since Nov. 19, were led in scoring by Buchanan, who posted 16 points in addition to seven rebounds and a career-best five assists. Freshman Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for UD.

St. John's Amber Thompson collected her second double double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "We did enough good things that we stayed in the game. St. John's is very talented and they are very athletic. They get to the rim very well. You are never going to stop a team like St. John's; they are too athletic. They have some seniors and some terrific athletes on that team. We didn't rebound the ball today and that's the bottom line. If we rebound the basketball, we win the game. But, we did not do that. It's time to head into the conference play and you hope that your non-conference games prepare you for the conference schedule. We will see if we grow up and see if we battle. This will be the type of game we play in the CAA."

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan ? "Our attack was not as tough as it should be. We went zone, which is something we have been working on, and it really threw us for a loop, especially on the rebounding aspect."

Senior tri-captain Akeema Richards ? "I just think we need to refocus. We are going to get back in the gym and focus on defense and rebounding more. We need to be tougher on the defensive end because defense wins games and defense wins championships. We didn't execute the game plan as well as we would have liked. When we come back on Sunday, we will be ready."

Redshirt Freshman Jodi Salyer ? "We didn't move our feet, we didn't rotate and we didn't rebound. They got too many second chance points. You are going to lose a game when you give your opponent 44 points in the paint."

HEN SCRATCHINGS

· Delaware is now 3-2 against St. John's all-time. Both losses have come at the Bob Carpenter Center.

· The Blue Hens snapped a two-game winning streak.

· UD is 198-79 (.715) all-time at the Bob Carpenter Center.

· Delaware was outrebounded for just the second time this season; the Hens were previously outrebounded, 37-35, at Lehigh.

· UD's previous low-rebounding game came with 35 rebounds at Lehigh.

· Kelsey Buchanan has scored in double figures in all 11 games this season.

SUBJECT: Dominating Second Half Leads University of Delaware to 77-64 Men's Basketball Victory Over Liberty

DATE:  January 1, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware made up for a rough opening half by dominating the final 20 minutes and cruising to a 77-64 men's basketball victory over Liberty in a New Year's Day matchup Wednesday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware, playing at home for the first time since Nov. 30, shot 67 percent from the field in the second stanza while outscoring the Flames by a 52-31margin on the way to the victory. The Hens, who evened their record to 7-7, won for just the second time in their last six games since early December.

Jarvis Threatt led five Delaware scorers in double figures with 19 points while Kyle Anderson dropped in 14 points and Davon Usher and Devon Saddler each contributed all 13 of their points in the second half. Carl Baptiste led the Blue Hens with eight rebounds to go with six points.

Liberty (6-8), which entered the contest having won five of its last seven games, remained winless on the road this season at 0-6. Tomasz Gielo led Liberty with a season-high16 points and seven rebounds while John Caleb Sanders pitched in with 11 points and JR Coronado pulled down a game and season-high 12 rebounds as the Flames outrebounded the Hens 42-33.

Delaware hit just 10 of 33 shots from the field in the first half and trailed 33-25 at the break despite committing just one turnover. Saddler and Usher, Delaware's top two leading scorers, were held scoreless over the first 20 minutes.

But it was a different story after halftime as Delaware knocked down 16 of 24 shots from the field, including 5 of 12 shooting from beyond the arc, to take control. After hitting 14 of 29 shots from the field in the first half, Liberty managed to shoot just 29 percent (9 of 31) in the second stanza.

"I thought our defense in the second half was outstanding, probably our best so far this season," said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "I'm really proud of the way our guys responded after halftime, to be able to score 52 points during the second half against that team is impressive. When we are sharing the ball and playing aggressive, we're a pretty good team."

After trailing 33-25 at the break, Delaware outscored Liberty 10-2 over the first four minutes of the second half to tie the game at 35-35. The Flames regained the lead and held it for the next four minutes before the Hens took the lead on a dunk by Usher with 10:35 left to play.

The game was tied twice over the next two minutes before the Hens finally took control, breaking a 46-46 deadlock with a 12-1 run that put the game away. Devonne Pinkard and Usher each contributed three-pointers during the run to put the Hens up 58-47 with 7:11 left. Liberty never got closer than nine points the rest of the day.

HEN SCRATCHINGS:

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Rolls Past Cal Poly 82-72 as Threatt Nearly Hits for Triple-Double

DATE:  January 4, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Jarvis Threatt just missed a triple-double as he poured in 25 points, including knocking down 13 of 15 free throw attempts, pulled down eight rebounds, and dished out seven assists to lead the University of Delaware men's basketball squad to an 82-72 non-league victory over Cal Poly Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Senior guard Devon Saddler came off the bench to drain his first five three-point attempts and finished with 22 points, junior guard Kyle Anderson added 15 points, and senior guard Davon Usher contributed 12 points to lead Delaware (8-7) to its second straight win and its third consecutive victory at home. Carl Baptiste added six points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Cal Poly (4-9), which lost its fourth straight game and fell to 0-7 on the road this season, got a career-high 14 points from Anthony Silvestri and 12 more from Kyle Odister. Silvestri, a junior forward, had entered the game with just 14 points all season. Delaware held Cal Poly's leading scorers Chris Eversley (14.5 points per game) and David Nwaba (11.8 points) to just eight points each.

The game marked the first meeting between the two schools in men's basketball.

Threatt, a 6-2 junior guard, just missed recording only the third triple-double in school history as he fell two rebounds and three assists shy of the rare feat. He knocked down 6 of 10 shots from the field and 13 of 15 from the foul line to lead all scorers and reach the 20-point mark for the sixth time this season. Saddler has also now scored in double figures in all eight games he has played this season.

"I was happy with our performance today and I'm proud that we were able to finish over .500 against a difficult non-conference schedule," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "The last seven minutes of the first half and the first 12 minutes of the second half were the best we played defensively all year. When we do that for an entire game, we will be the team we want to become. Getting to the free throw line (39 times) is the product of a good offense and I was happy our guys were able to knock them down."

Delaware, which jumped out to a 47-33 halftime lead and never looked back, outscored the Mustangs 32-13 at the foul line and was an impressive 10 of 24 from beyond the three-point arc. The Blue Hens reached the 80-point mark for the eighth time this season and the 32 free throws made was a season-high.

Both teams opened the game on fire as the first eight minutes featured 37 points, seven three-pointers, and eight lead changes. The game was tied for the fifth time of the half at 26-26 with 7:47 before the Hens broke it open as Saddler connected on a three-pointer and Threatt added two free throws and a three-point play as part of a 12-3 run that put UD up 38-29. A 9-2 Delaware run to end the half gave the Hens a 47-33 advantage at the break.

Delaware led by as much as 24 points at 64-40 with 13:07 left to play and Cal Poly never got closer than nine points the entire second half and that came in the final minute of play.

The Hens will begin Colonial Athletic Association action this Wednesday, Jan. 8, when they host Hofstra at 7 p.m. at the BCC.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Open CAA Play with OT Thriller; Down Hofstra, 71-66, Behind Buchanan's Career Day

DATE: January 5, 2014

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball squad opened Colonial Athletic Association action with an overtime thriller Sunday afternoon as senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) reached career-highs in points and rebounds while 18th year head coach Tina Martin notched her 350th career victory as the Blue Hens captured a 71-66 victory over Hofstra at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Buchanan erupted for career-highs of 27 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots and scored eight of Delaware's nine points in overtime as the two-time defending CAA champion Hens (9-3, 1-0 CAA) picked up their 43rd straight league victory in regular season and tournament play since the 2011-12 season.

Freshmen guards Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) and Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) each contributed 10 points while redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) came off the bench to pull down 13 rebounds for Delaware.

Hofstra held the lead the majority of the game until Buchanan gave UD a 47-45 advantage with 9:13 left in the second half. From that point on, the game saw four lead changes and three tied scores.

With less than four minutes remaining in regulation, Hofstra was up by four points before Delaware went on a 7-0 run, all off of free throws, to take the lead, 62-59 with 16 seconds left on the clock. The Pride's Annie Payton knocked down a three-pointer to tie things with 10 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Buchanan recorded the first score of the overtime period off of a put-back layup at the 3:55 mark and Delaware would never look back en route to victory.

Hofstra (5-7, 0-1 CAA), which lost for the second straight game, put four scorers in double figures and were led by Anma Onyeuku's 14 points.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

On the win over Hofstra ? "It was a difficult game. Overall, I thought our team really struggled on the defensive end early and fell behind by double digits. Anytime you fall behind by double digits, you have to scrap, claw and fight. There were a lot of adjustments and there were times where it was challenging. Offensively, we had some good looks. Give Hofstra credit. They are obviously a very tough and scrappy team, but our kids hung in there."

On playing their first CAA game ? "I think all conference games are going to be like this. Everybody knows what you are doing and what offenses you run. The freshmen got a taste of conference play today and it's only going to get more physical. They are going to have to get used to it and adjust. With this young of a group, we are going to be up and down. It was nice for us to fight for this win and get the victory."

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan

On what led to Delaware's comeback ? "Defense, which is always a key for us. We matched up, so we were able to better defend the people in our area, especially with the guards sitting behind us."

On having to work to get the win ? "We definitely had to work hard to get the win. At times, it was getting away from us and we had to figure out how to bring it back. But, good teams do that and we need to work on being a better team that way."

On taking the game over in the second half and overtime ? "I definitely know that my teammates have my back, but sometimes I know they are going to look for me to score."

Freshman Hannah Jardine ?

On the Blue Hens' comeback ? "We really just focused and had to bring more intensity on defense than we did in the first half. We started knocking down shots and Kelsey and Joy were really big on the boards offensively and defensively."

On Kelsey Buchanan's play against Hofstra ? "She was incredible. It didn't surprise me though because she plays just as well in practice and we know she is capable of doing great things. To see her grab those rebounds, she inspires us to work harder. It was really awesome to see her play well."

On the physical nature of the game ? "That was probably the most physical we have had to play over the last few games. It's not necessarily something you want, but when a game is more physical, it brings up the intensity. I think we handled it well."

Freshman Erika Brown

On the first CAA game of the season ? "I think my team really stuck together today. We didn't get down because we were down by 12. We just kept fighting and kept our heads up. That is a big key for us especially since we are so young."

On the key to the Blue Hens' comeback ? "Everybody was just looking for their shots and not rushing. I thought we were rushing at times. When everyone settled down, we started hitting shots and getting momentum. Once we got the momentum, everyone was feeling good."

NEWARK, Del. -- The Blue Hens backcourt trio of Devon Saddler, Jarvis Threatt, and Davon Usher combined for 63 points as the University of Delaware men's basketball squad won its Colonial Athletic Association opener with an 86-79 shootout victory over Hofstra at the Bob Carpenter Center Wednesday night.

Saddler came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points, including 17 in the second half, Threatt netted 20 points and reached the 1,000-point mark for his career, and Usher contributed 19 points of his own to pace Delaware (9-7) to its third straight win overall and its fourth straight home triumph.

The Hens, who also got 12 points and six rebounds from guard Kyle Anderson and nine points and six rebounds from center Carl Baptiste, downed the Pride for the sixth straight time. Delaware also won its CAA opener for the fourth straight year.

Hofstra (4-11, 0-1 CAA), which lost its third straight game and remained winless on the road this season at 0-6, got a productive night from the trio of Jordan Allen, Zeke Upshaw, and Dion Nesmith who combined for 55 points. Upshaw led the way with 19 points while Allen and Upshaw contributed 18 points each with Allen's marking a career-high. Stephen Nwaukoni scored eight points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds as the Pride held a 44-35 advantage on the boards.

Delaware overcame a 13-point deficit midway through the opening half, cut the Pride lead to 41-36 at the break, and finally gained the lead three minutes into the second half. A layup from Usher and a dunk after a steal by Threatt put the Hens up for good at 62-59 with 9:24 left to play.

"Our guys were a little nervous coming of the gate but knew we'd make a run," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross, who earned his 99th career victory at UD to move into a tie for third place all-time with current Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey. "Our defensive intensity was where we needed it to be, but my angst lies in our performance down the stretch. We have to take care of the ball better. I'm proud of the way we stuck with it and pulled out the win."

The Pride broke an 11-11 tie four minutes into the game by scoring 13 straight points to take a 24-11 advantage with 12:09 left. But the Hens got under control and pulled to within 41-36 at the break on a Saddler layup. The Hens opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 46-43 lead four minutes in.

Hofstra tied the game at 52-52 on a three-pointer by Nesmith with 13:10 left and lead changed hands four more times before Delaware took the lead for good at 60-59 on Usher's layup with 9:46. The Hens went up by as many as 10 points at 75-65 following a Saddler three-pointer with 4:26 remaining, but the Pride refused to go away. Hofstra pulled to within 80-76 on two free throws by Moussa Kone with 53 seconds left, but the Hens sank six straight free throws the rest of the way, including four by Threatt, to preserve the victory.

Threatt, who also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and led the team with three steals, became just the 31st player in UD history to reach the 1,000-point mark when he knocked down a three-pointer with 8:35 left in the opening stanza.

Delaware will return to action Saturday when they head to James Madison for a 4 p.m. matchup in CAA action in Harrisonburg, Va

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) tallied her fourth double double of the season as the University of Delaware women's basketball team earned its 44th straight Colonial Athletic Association victory with a 57-39 win over William & Mary at Kaplan Arena Thursday evening.

Buchanan collected 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field in addition to 12 rebounds and three assists for the Blue Hens, who improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in league action.

Freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) registered 11 points in addition to collecting a career-best seven rebounds in 34 minutes of play. The Hens dominated on the glass, outrebounding W&M by a margin of +22 at 52-30.

The Blue Hens proceeded to go up by 18 at 41-23 with 13:08 on the clock in the second before the Tribe gradually cut away at the lead. W&M would come within 10 points with just over four and a half minutes remaining in the game, but UD finished the game on a 10-2 run to pick up the win.

Marlena Tremba led the Tribe (3-10, 0-1 CAA) with 11 points while Kaitlyn Mathieu collected four points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals for William & Mary.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "We really tuned in and played good defense today. I feel really good about the team effort defensively. This is a tough place to play and it's a big win on the road so I'm really happy about that. We had a lot of kids play their hearts out today and we got key contributions from various kids when we needed to. I told them that rebounding was one of the keys tonight and they did a really nice job with that. We're still a work in progress and keep trying to get better every game. Everybody's been pitching in and that's what we need to do.

Freshman Forward Hannah Jardine ? "There's a higher level of intensity in conference play and even though I'm a freshman, a lot of our players have played against them before and the teams are use to each other's plays. We'll be ready to go for James Madison; it'll be a tough game, but we'll give it all we've got. We're a young team and we'll make mistakes, but our leaders get us through it."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Hangs On To Defeat James Madison, 78-74, as Ross Collects 100th Career Win

DATE: January 11, 2014

kmt:

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team held off James Madison, 78-74, Saturday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center, giving Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross his 100th carer victory.

Delaware won its season-best fourth straight game, improving to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Blue Hens have opened conference play with two straight wins for the fourth time since joining the CAA, and snapped a four-game road losing streak.

Blue Hen senior Devon Saddler led the Blue Hens with 25 points off the bench, while Davon Usher contributed 21 points and knocked down five three-pointers. Jarvis Threatt added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Marvin King-Davis led Delaware with nine boards.

James Madison, which was playing only its third home game of the season, fell to 6-11 overall and 1-2 in the league. Andre Nation, playing just his second game of the season, led five Dukes in double figures with 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting. Taylor Bessick contributed a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for JMU, while Ron Curry and Charles Cooke added 14 points apiece.

"I thought out defensive effort in the second half was the difference in the game," said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross, who became just the third coach in UD history to reach the century mark in victories. "JMU did a great job of challenging us in the paint in the first half, and we challenged our guys at the half. We did a much better job of keeping them on the perimeter in the second half, and also did a much better job on the boards. You have to be really tough and really strong down the stretch to win CAA games, and we did that tonight. Carl (Baptiste) has been a monster for us this year, and with him out our guys really stepped up and made plays when they needed to be made.

"The 100 wins is nice, but the biggest thing is that we were able to take over a program and build it to where it's consistently one of the top programs in the conference. Our success is attributed to a lot of really good players and assistant coaches."

After trailing by a pair at the half Delaware quickly pulled even, before Nation scored five straight points to put JMU in front 50-45 with 15:47 to play. But Delaware would answer with a 12-3 spurt, taking a 57-53 lead and forcing a Dukes time out with 11:48 left following a driving layup by Saddler.

However UD missed its next nine field goal attempts, as the Dukes took advantage with an eight-point spurt to regain the lead at 61-57 with 7:11 to play. Saddler ended the run with a three-pointer, and after the teams exchanged baskets for two minutes, Usher hit two free throws and buried a triple to put the Blue Hens up 69-65 with 3:35 to play.

Threatt later added two free throws to make it a six-point game, but Nation countered with a jumper and two free throws to cut UD's lead to 71-69 with 1:41 left. Threatt then hit one free throw, while Saddler drained a pair from the stripe to put the Hens up 74-69 with :26.5 left.

But Curry hit two foul shots, and after Threatt made one, Curry converted a three-point play to trim the margin to a single point. Threatt then hit one foul shot with :10.6 left giving the Dukes a chance, but Curry lost the ball driving the paint and the Blue Hens regained possession. Usher then hit a free throw to put the game away, as Delaware snapped a three-game losing skid to the Dukes.

The Blue Hens shot just 33.3 percent from the field, but earned the victory due to its 25 of 35 performance from the foul line. The Dukes shot 44.3 percent and held a 49-40 rebounding margin over Delaware, which played the final 23 minutes without senior forward Carl Baptiste who suffered a left ankle injury.

Delaware led by as many as five points early in the first half, while a three-pointer by Saddler gave the Blue Hens a 22-20 advantage at the 10:32 mark. However the Dukes scored six straight points to regain the lead, while two baskets by Bessick put JMU in front 36-26 and forced a Delaware timeout with 4:32 to play.

The Blue Hens were still down seven points in the final minute of the period, but Threatt converted a three-point play and hit an acrobatic layup just before the horn to cut Delaware's deficit to 42-40 at the break.

Delaware will look for its fifth straight win on Wednesday when the Blue Hens host William & Mary at 7 p.m.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Suffers Largest Loss Since 2008 as Blue Hens Snap 44-Game CAA Winning Streak at James Madison

DATE: January 12, 2014

mh:

HARRISONBURG, Va. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team suffered the largest margin of defeat since 2008 Sunday afternoon as James Madison University stifled the Blue Hens, 87-51, at the Convocation Center.

The Hens previously suffered a 39-point setback to former CAA foe Old Dominion University in a 76-37 loss on Jan. 27, 2008.

The loss also marks the first for Delaware in CAA regular season and tournament action since the 2010-11 season when the Dukes defeated the Blue Hens, 67-61, in the championship final of the CAA Tournament.

Delaware (10-4, 2-1 CAA) held its own throughout the first half as the Blue Hens were down just three at halftime at 27-24, but JMU (11-4, 1-0 CAA) proved to be too much in the second half as the Hens were outscored, 60-27, in the final stanza.

With just over 13 minutes remaining in the game, UD was within nine points at 42-33 before the Dukes went on a 19-6 run to take a 61-39 advantage. JMU held the Blue Hens to just two points in the final 3:47 while scoring 13 points of its own.

Freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) led Delaware with 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds in addition to two assists.

Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Hens, who outrebounded the Dukes, 44-39, in the game.

James Madison senior and preseason CAA Player of the Year Kirby Burkholder paced the way for the Dukes with a career-best 33 points on a career-high-tying seven three-pointers. Nikki Newman contributed eight points and game highs of 11 rebounds and seven assists for JMU.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "We missed shots early in the second half and then Kirby [Burkholder] went on a run. We hung our heads and came back to the offensive end and missed several layups. We missed 13 free throws and a bunch on the front end of a 1-and-1 situation. You can't do that on someone else's court and expect to win, especially on this court and against a Top-40 team in the county. We quit once we were down by 20 and that's an immaturity on our player's parts that we are going to have to correct. This just wasn't our day."

Senior Tri-Captain Kelsey Buchanan ? "In the second half, it was our defense that let it get away and then things snowballed. We were communicating, but we just weren't making and finishing plays. There were times that we lost her [Burkholder] in transition and I totally take the blame for that."

Freshman Guard Erika Brown ? "As the point guard of the team, the biggest learning experience I take out of this is that I have to make sure that as a team we don't give up. If there's time left in the game, we can make a comeback. I need to motivate my teammates more when we're not hitting shots and we have to make stops on the defensive end."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight, Downs William & Mary 76-71 in CAA Action

DATE:  January 15, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball squad remained unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play Wednesday night as Devon Saddler scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the second half and fellow senior Davon Usher knocked down 15 of his 21 points in the opening stanza to lead the Blue Hens to a 76-71 victory over William & Mary at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware (11-7, 3-0 CAA) remained atop the CAA standings as the Blue Hens won their fifth straight game overall, their fifth straight game at home, and their fifth straight over William & Mary. The Hens are now off to a 3-0 start in league play for the second straight year.

The Tribe (9-6, 1-1 CAA) had a three-game win streak snapped as they squandered a 13-point first half lead as Delaware rallied in the second half.

Jarvis Threatt, who was honored before the game for scoring his 1,000th point earlier this year, added 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists while Carl Baptiste, who was nursing an ankle injury suffered in the win over James Madison Saturday, added six points and eight rebounds off the bench. Saddler, Usher, and Kyle Anderson each pulled down six boards on the night.

Saddler surpassed the 1,900-point mark for his career during the game while Usher, who connected on 5 of 8 three-point attempts, posted his seventh 20-point game of the season and Threatt reached double figures in scoring for the fifth straight outing.

"I thought it was a phenomenal effort by our guys in the second half, both offensively and defensively," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "William & Mary is a quality team and to be able to come back on them makes me very proud of our guys. I thought Jarvis Threatt's defensive effort on Marcus Thornton (seven turnovers and 3 of 12 shooting from the field) was as good as I've seen since he got here. Carl (Baptiste) was limited in practice Tuesday but did a great job rebounding inside."

William & Mary placed five scorers in double figures as Tim Rusthoven led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds, Brandon Britt added 12 points off the bench, and Thornton, Terry Tarpey, and Omar Prewitt each contributed 10 points with Tarpey also pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing a team-high four assists.

Prewitt, one of the CAA's top freshmen this season, managed to hit just 1 of 7 three-point attempts as the Tribe went just 9 of 26 for the game from beyond the arc.

Delaware trailed the entire first half and was down by as many as 13 points at 34-21 with 3:27 left in the opening stanza before outscoring the Tribe 11-4 down the stretch to narrow the margin at the break to 38-32.

The Blue Hens kept the momentum up and eventually tied the game at 41-41 with 15:04 left to play. The game would be tied three more times before a three-pointer by Usher with 9:29 left gave the Hens the lead for good at 56-54.

William & Mary pulled to within three points several times the rest of the way but could never regain the lead. Two free throws by Prewitt with 3:09 left cut the Delaware lead to 66-62, but Saddler knocked down all eight of his free throws the rest of the way to ice the game.

Delaware will look to remain unbeaten in league play when the Blue Hens travel to Northeastern Sunday for a 12 noon tip in Boston.

NEWARK, Del. ? Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) picked up a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds Friday evening as the University of Delaware women's basketball team reached its 200th all-time victory at the Bob Carpenter Center following a 65-44 win over UNCW.

Buchanan went 7-for-13 (.538) from the field in addition to 10 free throws, two blocks, two assists and a steal for the Blue Hens, who won their third game out of the last four contests to improve to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Classmate Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) added 14 points and a team-best four assists for Delaware. Freshman guard Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) collected nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds and tied a career-best three steals.

The Hens and Seahawks (1-16, 0-3 CAA) battled things out in the first half, with UNCW leading the majority of the stanza and going up by as much as 11 at the 11:48 mark. Delaware responded with a 17-0 run to take the 22-16 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

UD took a two-point advantage into halftime and went up by four to open the second half before UNCW tied the game at 28-28 with 15:18 on the clock. Freshmen Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) each tallied baskets within the next minute and the Hens never looked back in the win.

Delaware closed out the game with a 19-4 stretch, with UNCW's lone points coming on free throws. The Hens held the Seahawks without a field goal for the final 6:46 of the contest.

UNCW was led by Kelva Atkins' 11 points and five assists while Brie Mobley and Amber Reeves each contributed eight points apiece. Naqaiyyah Teague collected a team-best eight rebounds in the loss.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

On the win over UNCW - "Overall, it was a very good effort in the second half. This young group has to learn to have that resiliency and this was the first step. We definitely went down 16-5 and I thought there was some hangover [from the JMU game] and we started missing lay-ups. Defensively, we were standing around. In the second half, we went on that big run and then, we calmed down. We have to just keep grinding away and plugging away. This was a good bounce back game for us."

On the play of senior Akeema Richards - "I thought she played very well tonight. I thought she gave us a big lift and played under control. Akeema has to be the senior and has to play under control. I was proud of her tonight. I really thought she played a really good floor game. It was good to see the senior calm us down."

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan

On having a bit of a hangover from the JMU game - "I was a little concerned. We seemed a little flat and a little dead. We needed to get that energy and momentum and we seemed to get it."

On keys to the comeback victory - "It was Akeema [Richards]. She hit a couple of big shots for us in the second half. Her play got us going and we knew we could do it."

On being one of the leaders of the team ? "It's pretty important, especially with the younger players. There are a lot of freshmen [on the team] and they are asked to play and be an important part of the team. We have to be an important part of that process."

Senior tri-captain Akeema Richards

On the turnaround ? "Our defense turned things around for us. Once we started getting defensive stops, it just turned the game into something we could contend with."

On her performance against UNC Wilmington ? "I was just playing ball. I just come in and do whatever the coaches ask me to do."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Hangs On Late, Remains Unbeaten in CAA with 74-70 Victory at Northeastern

DATE: January 18, 2014

kmt:

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team took the lead for good with a late seven-point run and hung on down the stretch as the Blue Hens remained unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play with a hard-fought 74-70 victory over Northeastern Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.

Delaware extended its winning streak to six consecutive games, improving to 12-7 overall and 4-0 in league play. The Blue Hens have opened conference action with four straight wins for the second time since joining the CAA, along with the 2007-08 squad which began with five straight league victories.

UD got another big game from senior Devon Saddler, who surpassed the 20-point mark for the fifth straight game by pouring in 22 points on the afternoon. Saddler also played point guard in the absence of Jarvis Threatt who did not travel with the team, and finished with a season-best eight assists while playing all 40 minutes.

Senior forward Carl Baptiste scored a career-high 19 points for the Blue Hens, and he hit all nine of his attempts from the field. Baptiste also led the squad with 11 rebounds to post his third career double-double, and blocked four shots including a key swat in the final seconds. Davon Usher was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 17 points, while Kyle Anderson contributed nine on three triples.

The Blue Hens went 28 of 50 from the field, as their 56.0 field goal percentage was the team's highest of the season.

David Walker scored a career-high 20 points for Northeastern, which dropped to 5-14 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Zach Stahl recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-best 11 boards, while Scott Eatherton chipped in with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The teams were knotted at 61-61 with four minutes to play, and following a lengthy timeout due to a malfunctioning shot clock, Blue Hen freshman Devonne Pinkard gave Delaware the lead for good by knocking down a three-pointer from the right corner. Saddler then hit one of two from the line, and after a Huskies miss, Anderson buried a deep three-pointer to make it a 68-61 game with 1:18 to play.

Northeastern would not quit, pulling within 69-68 with 18 seconds to play on a Stahl layup. But Usher hit a pair from the foul line to make it a three-point game, while Baptiste blocked a layup by Stahl at the other end with five seconds to play. Saddler grabbed the rebound and was fouled, and hit one from the stripe to put Delaware up four.

Walker answered with a bank shot while getting fouled to make it a 72-70 game with 1.4 seconds on the clock, but his ensuing free throw attempt did not hit the rim. Saddler then added another two free throws to finally seal the victory.

"I'm really proud of our guys to be able to hang on and come out with a victory at a very tough place to play," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "I thought the difference was our defense; we got going offensively in the second half, and our defense was able to put our stamp on the game. Carl (Baptiste) is very skilled inside and has been a force for us throughout the season. Our guys did a great job of getting him opportunities today, and credit to him for putting the ball in the basket."

Delaware trailed 5-4 early on but used an 8-0 run, including three baskets by Baptiste, to take a 12-5 lead five and a half minutes into the contest. The Blue Hens led for the next seven minutes, until a three-point play by Eatherton gave the Huskies a 21-19 advantage at the 7:15 mark. Later in the period Northeastern broke a tie with five straight points, before a driving layup by Saddler in the final seconds cut the Blue Hens' deficit to 30-27 at the break.

After the teams traded buckets early in the second half, Usher scored inside to put the Blue Hens back in front 37-36 with 16 minutes to play. Delaware led by as many as five points, but two free throws by Northeastern's T.J. Williams knotted the game at 48-48 with 10-49 left. The teams took turns taking the lead before an Anderson three-pointer gave Delaware a 57-55 advantage at the 7:56 mark, and after the squads were still even at 61-61, the Blue Hens went on their decisive 7-0 run.

SUBJECT: Drexel Overtakes University of Delaware Women's Basketball as Blue Hens Falter in Waning Minutes, 61-52

DATE: January 19, 2014

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? In a game that featured 12 lead changes, the University of Delaware women's basketball team faltered during the final four minutes and fell 61-52 to Drexel University Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

With the loss, the Blue Hens (11-5, 3-2 CAA) snapped a 21-game CAA winning streak at the Bob Carpenter Center. Additionally, Drexel (8-8, 3-0 CAA) beat Delaware for the first time in seven games.

Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) led UD with 19 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) posted a career-best eight assists in addition to eight rebounds. Senior Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) also tallied 10 points and six rebounds for the Hens.

With four minutes left in the game, the Blue Hens cut Drexel's lead to four points at 52-48, but then allowed the Dragons to go on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to seal the game.

Delaware never led by more than two points while the Drexel held its largest lead of the game of 12 points with less than a minute remaining.

The Blue Hens also struggled from the free throw line, shooting just 28.6 percent (2-for-7) from the charity stripe.

Three Dragons scored in double figures and were led by Sarah Curran's 19 points while Rachel Pearson picked up 12 and Meghan Creighton collected 11.

QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

"The better team won today, plain and simple. Their kids stepped up and we weren't able to. We took some bad shots at the end of the game and we didn't execute like I wanted us to."

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan

"I think coach is upset with our offensive execution. We had plays and we knew what we were suppose to be running, but we just didn't execute it the way we were suppose to and that killed us near the end."

Sophomore guard Courtni Green

"It's always very physical against Drexel and they can shoot the ball, so we always have to have our head on a swivel and watch out for screens. It was definitely a quick turnaround [after the UNCW game], but it's all about being focused. The coaches always tell me to shoot, even when I don't think I have a good look, they always encourage me to shoot it and if I can't I always try to get my teammates involved."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Races Past Drexel, 90-77, To Claim Seventh Straight Victory and Remain Perfect in CAA

DATE: January 20, 2014

kmt:

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team put five players in double figures and posted its best shooting percentage of the season as the Blue Hens won their seventh straight game and remained perfect in Colonial Athletic Association play with an impressive 90-77 victory over Drexel Monday night at the Daskalakis Center.

The Blue Hens improved to 13-7 overall, while their 5-0 league start matches the 2007-08 squad for the most consecutive CAA victories to open a season. Delaware also won for the third time in as many league road games this year, and has now won 14 of its last 16 CAA road contests.

Senior guard Devon Saddler again led the way by pouring in 23 points, his sixth consecutive game over 20 points, to go with eight rebounds and seven assists on the night. Jarvis Threatt added 18 points, nine assists and three steals, while Marvin King-Davis celebrated his 21st birthday by pouring in 15 points. Davon Usher contributed 12 points before leaving the game late with a groin injury, while Carl Baptiste chipped in 10 points and six boards.

Delaware, which shot 56.0 percent during Saturday's win at Northeastern, went 35 of 62 from the floor to shoot a season-high 56.5 percent against the Dragons. Baptiste, who entered the game with 10 consecutive field goals made, connected on his first three field goal attempts tonight to tie the school record of 13 straight held by Greg Smith.

The Blue Hens, who scored 90 points against Drexel for the first time since Jan. 11, 2000, also held a commanding 44-27 rebounding advantage over the Dragons.

Frantz Massenat posted his second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 assists for Drexel, which fell to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in league play. Tavon Allen came off the bench to score 19 points and knock down five three-pointers, while Chris Fouch contributed 18 points.

"I'm really happy that we were able to come in here and earn the victory," said eighth-year Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "I'm very proud of the guys; we look forward to winning in tough road environments like Drexel. In a rivalry like this you knew Drexel was going to make a run, but we did a good job of withstanding it during the second half."

Delaware, which had trailed at the half during each of its first four CAA games, made sure that did not happen tonight by exploding for 48 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Blue Hens used an early 13-2 spurt to take a 17-7 lead following a Kyle Anderson three-pointer, and connected on 15 of its first 21 shots from the field while extending the advantage to 39-27 lead on a Saddler stepback jumper at the 6:12 mark.

The lead grew to as much as 16, while Threatt found Baptiste for a bucket to close the first half scoring and give the Blue Hens a 48-32 margin at the break. Delaware shot 19 of 32 (59.4%) during the opening 20 minutes and went 7 of 8 from the foul line while posting its highest first half output of the season. Meanwhile the Blue Hens limited the Dragons to just 35.3 percent shooting, including just one basket in the final 5:47 of the stanza.

"We haven't played a first half like that all season, and it seemed like every shot was going in," Saddler said.

Drexel opened second half with a quick 7-0 run, as Fouch hit a layup with 17:33 left to bring the Dragons within 48-39 and force a Delaware timeout. But Baptiste ended the run with a jumphook inside, and it was a 10-point game before Saddler scored three straight buckets to put the Blue Hens back up 16 at 67-51 with nine and a half minutes to play.

Cazmon Hayes extended the run to 8-0 with a pair of free throws, and after Allen knocked down a jumper for Drexel, Devonne Pinkard buried a three-pointer to give the Blue Hens their largest lead of the night at 72-53 with 7:19 remaining.

The Dragons eventually closed within 82-72 at the 2:45 mark, but Threatt found King-Davis for a dunk and then hit two free throws to make it a 14-point game, and Delaware led by double figures the rest of the way.

The Blue Hens return home Saturday to host Towson at 12 noon in a matchup of the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the CAA.

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team overcame a 22-point halftime deficit, but allowed a College of Charleston jumper with four seconds remaining to fall, 68-66, in a heartbreaker Sunday evening at TD Arena.

The Blue Hens (11-6, 3-3 Colonial Athletic Association) outscored the Cougars (11-8, 4-2 CAA) by 20 points in the second half and had things tied at 66-66 with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game until Afreyea Tolbert knocked down a jumper in the paint with six seconds on the clock. A floating jumper from Delaware freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) wouldn't bounce in as time expired and CofC came away with the victory.

UD came out in the second half and immediately pounced on the Cougars by going on a 17-3 run to come within eight at 48-40. The College of Charleston proceeded to take a 19-point advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in the game before the Hens crawled right back into things.

With five minutes left on the clock, Delaware outscored the Cougars, 13-0, including seven Blue Hens free throws.

Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) and redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) each collected double doubles in the loss. Buchanan marked her sixth career double-double by tying a career-high 27 points in addition to 12 rebounds. Caracciolo tallied the second double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Mikaela Hopkins and Breanna Bolden also each had double doubles for the Cougars. Hopkins registered 19 points and 12 rebounds while Bolden contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for the College.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "I am proud of the effort we put forth in the second half and I told them after the game that we showed the heart of a fighter. We fought and we refused to be embarrassed here. It's really hard right now with this young group because they're so see-saw-ish. Obviously, if we played with as much enthusiasm and fight in the first half as we did in the second, we would have put ourselves in an outstanding position to win this basketball game."

Redshirt Sophomore Joy Caracciolo ? "We were just focusing on one stop at a time. We got really excited when we cut the lead, but we let up a couple of times and that's when they got more points. It was a really emotional game; we knew how bad we played in the first half, so we were really trying to make up for it in the second. It's a really tough loss and it's almost worse than losing by a lot because we know we worked really hard and we were right there. We showed a lot of heart and I'm proud of this team."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Continues To Roll, Posts Ninth Straight Win With 89-72 Victory at William & Mary

DATE: January 29, 2014

kmt:

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team remained unbeaten in the CAA and continued its impressive start to the conference season as the Blue Hens jumped in front early and never trailed from there during an 89-72 victory over William & Mary Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 15-7 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the conference, won their ninth straight game and improved to 4-0 in league road contests this season. Delaware has now claimed its last eight CAA road games and is 15-2 in its last 17 conference outings away from Newark.

UD senior guard Davon Usher led the offensive attack by pouring in a game-high 28 points, going 9 of 15 from the field including 6 of 9 from three-point range. Senior forward Carl Baptiste scored a career-high 23 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field, while fellow senior Devon Saddler produced an exceptional all-around effort of 19 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals. Saddler has now scored 1,995 career points and needs just five more to become the second player in UD history to reach the 2,000-point mark.

Junior Kyle Anderson was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points, while he added a career-high 10 rebounds to post the first double-double of his career. Delaware, which was playing its first game since the suspensions of Jarvis Threatt and Marvin King-Davis, shot 51.6 percent from the field and knocked down 10 of 22 shots from behind the arc. The Blue Hens have now shot over 50 percent in three of their last four games.

William & Mary, which had a two-game winning streak snapped and a four-game home winning streak halted, dropped to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in league play. Marcus Thornton paced the Tribe with 19 points and five assists, while Daniel Dixon chipped in with 15 points off the bench.

"This is one of the most unbelievable performances that I've seen from a Delaware team, to be honest," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "To be able to respond against a William & Mary team that has a lot of firepower and come out with the win in a very hostile environment is very satisfying. We showed a lot of poise, toughness and composure tonight. It's a sign of a pretty good program that can lose two key guys and still beat a quality opponent on the road."

In a game featuring the top two scoring teams in the CAA Delaware exploded out of the gate, using an early 11-0 run to take a 13-3 lead and force a William & Mary time out five minutes into the contest. The advantage expanded to 23-6 at the 10:15 mark following consecutive Usher three-pointers, while later in the half a Cazmon Hayes triple culminated an 8-0 Blue Hen run that put Delaware up 39-17 with 4:36 on the clock.

The margin grew to a game-high 24 a minute later when Usher drilled his fourth three-pointer of the period, and after the Tribe cut the lead in half with a 15-3 spurt, Saddler scored just before the final horn to give the Blue Hens a 47-33 advantage at the break.

The teams traded baskets early in the second half, before a 7-0 William & Mary run finally pulled the Tribe within single digits at 59-50 with 12:10 remaining. But Delaware would immediately answer, as Saddler scored inside to ignite a 10-2 spurt that put the Blue Hens back up 17 at 69-52 with 8:37 left.

The Blue Hens cruised from there, leading by at least 14 points the rest of the way.

Delaware begins a four-game homestand on Saturday with a 12 noon home game against UNCW.

Game Notes:

? UD went undefeated in January for the fourth time in school history, and the first since 1966-67

? UD is 7-0 in league play for just the second time in school history, along with 1991-92 team that went 14-0 in North Atlantic Conference

? Delaware's eight-game conference road winning streak is tied for the second longest in school history

? Devon Saddler narrowly missed scoring 20 points in his eighth straight game, which would have been a school record

? Cazmon Hayes scored six points off the bench, tied for his second highest output of the season

? Delaware held a 42-30 rebounding advantage

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Bounces Back With 74-65 Victory Over Northeastern

DATE: January 30, 2014

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team jumped out to a 15-2 lead and never looked back as the Blue Hens picked up a 74-65 victory over Northeastern Thursday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

UD spread the offensive wealth against Northeastern as four players scored at least 10 points on the night.

Blue Hens senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) led the way once again for Delaware (12-6, 4-3 CAA) as the center scored a game-high 26 points in addition to pulling down seven rebounds.

Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) tied a career-best with 14 points while freshman Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) tallied her first double digit scoring game with 10 points. Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) added 12 points and five assists in the victory.

Delaware freshman Jodi Salyer (Roanoke, Va.) tied a career-high with six of the Blue Hens' 17 assists.

The win snapped a rare two-game losing streak for the two-time CAA defending champion Hens, who defeated the Huskies for the 24th straight time and improved to 16-2 all-time against NU in Newark.

Northeastern (7-12, 1-5 CAA), which lost its fifth straight game and fell for the eighth time in the last nine outings, received 21 points and six rebounds from Samantha DeFreese. Kazzidy Stewart came off the bench to add 17 points while Jewel Tunstull contributed 15 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

"This team is so young and they can be so fragile at times, but they are constantly learning. We needed this win desperately after tough back-to-back losses. It was great to see them come out strong in the first 10 minutes and that was probably the first time we've done that in a month. Tonight they really stepped up, even when Northeastern made a run."

Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo

"It was very important that we continued to keep our foot on the gas and make sure to keep scoring, followed by getting stops. After coming back from a 22-point lead at Charleston, we didn't want to be on the opposite end of that and have an opponent come back on us. That game showed us that anything can happen and you have to play all 40 minutes. The way we played in the second half at Charleston is how we want to play an entire game."

Freshman Hannah Jardine

"Our defense starting pulling down rebounds and we really stuck together as a unit on defense. We rotated, helped on traps down low and that's what really kept us going in the second half. Northeastern was a double threat because they could shoot and they could drive, so it wasn't like we could completely back off. We definitely had to be focused defensively as they were no easy task."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Edges UNCW, 66-65, To Remain Perfect in CAA Play

DATE: February 1, 2014

kmt:

NEWARK, Del. -- Davon Usher and Devon Saddler each had key blocks in the final minute while Carl Baptiste scored the winning basket with 26 seconds remaining as the University of Delaware men's basketball team shook off a tough shooting day to edge UNCW, 66-65, Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens extended their win streak to 10 straight games, tied for the third longest streak in school history, while improving to 16-7 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware also claimed its seventh consecutive home game, its longest streak since the 2004 season.

The Blue Hens went just 20 of 58 from the field, as their 34.5 shooting percentage was the second lowest of the season, but were able to overcome an eight-point deficit with 9:14 remaining to remain unbeaten in the league.

UD senior guard Devon Saddler scored 12 of his 15 points after halftime, as he surpassed the 2,000-point mark for his career. Saddler, the third leading active scorer in the nation, has now scored 2,010 career points and needs 21 more to break the school record held by Mike Pegues.

Usher chipped in with 13 points, all but two in the second half, while Baptiste contributed 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Blue Hens also got key contributions off the bench from freshmen Devonne Pinkard, who went 3 of 3 from behind the arc to finish with nine points, and Cazmon Hayes, who contributed eight points.

Cedrick Williams posted team-highs of 18 points and eight rebounds for UNCW, which dropped its 11th straight game while falling to 6-16 overall and 0-7 in the CAA. Addison Spruill chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Seahawks, who lost their sixth consecutive game in Newark.

Neither team shot well during the first period before a Pinkard three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Blue Hens a 28-26 halftime lead, but the Seahawks got their offense rolling in the second stanza and eventually took a 53-45 advantage with 9:14 to play.

However the Blue Hens quickly used a 10-2 spurt, highlighted by consecutive three-point plays from Usher, to draw even at 55-55 with 6:39 left. UNCW rebounded to go up 65-52 with 1:55 to go on a jump hook by Shane Reybold, before a free throw by Baptiste made it a two-point game. Usher then hit one of two from the line following a Blue Hen steal, while his blocked shot with 33 seconds left gave Delaware the ball back.

Saddler then raced down court and found Baptiste inside for the go-ahead layup, and following a UNCW time out, he blocked an 18-foot jumper by the Seahawks' Chris Dixon. The rebound was a jump ball with Delaware earning possession, and even though Saddler missed two free throws after being fouled with :00.4 left, UNCW's last ditch heave was off the mark.

"I am ecstatic about this victory today, as much so as Wednesday's win at William & Mary," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "We didn't play particularly well, and UNCW had a lot to do with that, but we found a way to win. Devon (Saddler) helped us get two big stops late and Carl (Baptiste) had the key basket at the end; we just made plays when we had to. Our defense kept us in the game, and I'm thrilled we were able to pull out a win when we didn't shoot the ball well."

The Blue Hens, coming off an 89-point performance in Williamsburg on Wednesday, made just three field goals through the first 11 minutes of Saturday's contest and trailed 12-9 midway through the period. Six consecutive points by Hayes put Delaware up 20-16, and after the Seahawks went back up a point, Pinkard connected from the left wing just before the horn to give Delaware a two-point cushion at the break.

Game Notes:

? Delaware's 10-game win streak is the program's longest since a school-record 20 straight in 1991-92

? Delaware has opened 8-0 in conference play for the second time in school history

? The Blue Hens have now won four consecutive games over UNCW

? Devonne Pinkard's nine points tied a season-high

? Saddler has reached double figures in all 16 games in which he has appeared this year

? Davon Usher reached double digits for the 12th straight contest

? Delaware is back home on Monday to host Northeastern at 7 p.m.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "Everybody contributed today and they all played together as a team. Defensively, we're starting to get an idea of what it takes. Yes, we still have our lapses, but it's so nice to see this young team starting to gel. Now we just have to keep rolling, clawing and fighting. This young team is learning and they're a work in progress. Today was a good day for this group of youngsters."

Sophomore Alecia Bell ? "I'm becoming more comfortable with my role, not as an offensive player, but as the person with a defensive role. I really take pride in that and I try to focus on getting the rebounds and the offense will follow. I know that when I do get some open looks, I need to take them. I've really been focusing on my role and helping my team get the win. Our confidence has really improved over these last two games as we've really brought our own energy and played as a team."

SUBJECT: Saddler Breaks Scoring Record, Leads University of Delaware Men's Basketball to 80-67 CAA Victory Over Northeastern

DATE:  February 3, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Senior guard Devon Saddler scored 21 points and became the University of Delaware's all-time leading scorer and hot-shooting Davon Usher finished with a game-high 25 points as the league-leading Blue Hens won their 11th straight game with an 80-67 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over Northeastern Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Saddler (Aberdeen/Aberdeen, Md.), who upped his career total to 2,031 points to pass the mark of 2,031 established by Mike Pegues back in 1996-2000, also dished out a game-high eight assists and pulled down five rebounds as the Blue Hens (17-7, 9-0 CAA) led from wire-to-wire for the victory.

"That was the toughest two points I've ever scored," said Saddler, who broke the record on two free throws with 4:04 left to play after missing six straight field goal attempts that would have earned him the record a little sooner. "I had Mike Pegues as a coach and he told me that I had the potential to eventually break his record. It felt good to finally pass him."

Usher knocked down his first five three-point attempts and converted 8 of 12 field goal attempts for the night, senior center Carl Baptiste notched his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, and Kyle Anderson added 15 points in yet another all-around Delaware effort. Delaware registered a season-high 12 three-pointers on 27 attempts and committed just six turnovers the entire evening.

The Blue Hens, whose win streak is currently the 10th longest in NCAA Division I and UD's longest since 1998-99, have also won eight straight at home, the longest such streak since the 1998-2000 seasons. The 10-game overall win streak is the third longest in Delaware history.

"Our energy to start the game and to open the second half was fantastic," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "We need that type of energy on the defensive end too. We can score,, but defensively we need to keep making strides. Devon has meant so much to this program. It hasn't been lost on me the correlation between the day he stepped foot on campus and when we started winning. He is a true competitor and does whatever it takes to help the team win."

Northeastern (7-16, 4-5 CAA), which lost its second straight game, got 21 points and eight rebounds from Scott Eatherton and 12 points from David Walker. Delaware defeated the Huskies for the second time in two weeks after also winning 74-70 on Jan. 18.

The Huskies, who lost for just the third time in their last 14 CAA road games since last season, allowed over 58 points for just the second time in their last seven outings with Delaware surpassing that 58-point mark both times. The Hens had 48 points at halftime and had reached the 60-point mark just six minutes into the second half.

Delaware scored the first seven points of the game and led 13-3 just over four minutes into the contest and never looked back. Northeastern rallied and cut Delaware's first half lead to 32-27 with 3:04 left, but the Hens outscored the Huskies 16-2 the rest of the way thanks to two Anderson three-pointers, an Usher dunk, and a long three by Saddler at the buzzer.

The Hens never let up in the second stanza as they scored the first nine points of the half to go up by 26 points at 57-31 four minutes in. They built the lead to as many as 27 points at 72-45 with 7:55 left before Northeastern outscored the Hens 15-4 over the final four minutes to close the gap.

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team outscored UNCW by 21 points in the second half Friday evening en route to a 70-50 victory over the Seahawks at Trask Coliseum.

Sophomores Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) and Joy Caracciolo tallied career-highs with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Green went 7-of-12 from the field, including two three-pointers, for the Blue Hens, while Caracciolo was 7-of-13 with three free throws.

Delaware, which entered halftime with a 34-33 deficit, jumped out to a five-point lead at the first media timeout of the second half. The Blue Hens proceeded to go on a 14-2 run to go up, 61-44 with 7:13 left in the game.

Over the final 6:16 of the game, Delaware allowed just one Seahawk field goal, a jumper from Johanna McMillan at the 2:14 mark.

Brie Mobley led UNCW (3-20, 2-7 CAA) with 16 points and five rebounds while Kelva Atkins added 15 points and six assists.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "In the first half, we got caught up a little bit with our offense and missed some easy baskets. The youngsters really held their heads and I had to calm them down and reassure them that their shots would eventually fall. This team really goes as the offense goes and we play better defense when we make shots, which we did in the second half. Overall, we were more patient in the second half and the offense followed."

Sophomore Courtni Green ? "At halftime, the coaches stressed that we needed to play defense, stop the penetration and on the offensive end, get the ball in transition and go. The coaches also encouraged me that if my shot isn't falling, that I need to go to the basket more."

SUBJECT: Usher Continues Torrid Streak, Delaware Men's Basketball Blasts JMU 81-65 to Stay Unbeaten in CAA Action

DATE:  February 12, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- The red-hot University of Delaware men's basketball squad continues to roll, and so does Davon Usher.

Usher, coming off a 42-point effort in a comeback win over College of Charleston in his previous outing a week ago, drained 34 more points Wednesday night as the Blue Hens took control early and never looked back in posting an 81-65 victory over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association play at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The biggest crowd at the BCC in nearly a decade, highlighted by a frenzied student section, was on hand to watch the Blue Hens (19-7, 11-0 CAA) roll to their 13th straight victory overall and their 10th straight triumph at home. The crowd of 4,412 was the largest to fill The Bob since Feb. 19, 2005.

"This was an unbelievable college basketball atmosphere and the students were absolutely fantastic," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "This is what college basketball is all about and tonight's atmosphere rivaled any place I have been. Part of this victory goes to our students. They kept our guys fired up the entire night."

Delaware's 13-game win streak is the second longest in school history and the seventh longest current streak in NCAA Division I men's basketball. The Hens' 11-0 start in league play ties the CAA record set by Richmond in 1985-86 and by VCU in 2006-07. The Hens are one of just seven teams in the nation with an undefeated league slate.

Usher, a senior guard out of South Baltimore, Md., continued his impressive scoring spree as he hit on 9 of 17 shots from the field, including four three-pointers, and knocked down 12 of 13 shots from the foul line. Usher, whose 79 points in consecutive games is a new UD record, also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out two assists. He is averaging 33.4 points per game over the last three outings.

Delaware senior center Carl Baptiste posted his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds despite playing just 22 minutes due to foul trouble while senior guard Devon Saddler contributed nine points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Baptiste hit on 8 of 10 shots from the field.

"When Davon rises up for a shot, you expect it to go in every time," said Ross of his high-scoring senior, who entered the game averaging 18.6 points per game on the season. "He is a heck of a player. Devon was phenomenal too and controlled the game for us all night."

James Madison (9-17, 4-8 CAA) lost for the fourth time in the last five outings despite Andre Nation's 17 points and Yohanny Dalembert's career-high 15 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Nation scored in double figures for the eighth straight game. The Dukes shot just 32.3 percent from the field for the game (20 of 62) and hit just 3 of 15 three-point attempts.

The Blue Hens led by just four points midway through the opening half but broke away on a 14-3 run with Usher's seven points leading the way. The lead ballooned to 51-32 at halftime as the Hens posted their most productive first half since scoring 52 vs. New Hampshire on Jan. 25, 2001.

Delaware led by at least 15 points the entire second half and pushed the lead to as much as 22 points at 81-59 with 3:25 left to play.

The Blue Hens will continue action Monday, Feb. 17, when they travel to Towson for a 7 p.m. tip. Delaware, which swept the season series from JMU, also defeated Towson 83-76 back on Jan. 25.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Downs Towson, 52-43, for Fifth Straight Win

DATE: February 16, 2014

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) and sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) combined for 29 points as the University of Delaware women's basketball team picked up its fifth straight win Sunday afternoon with a 52-43 victory over Towson University at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Just two days after scoring a season-high 85 points over the College of Charleston, Delaware's 52 points were the fewest in a win this season. UD and Towson combined for just 10 more points than the Hens scored against CofC.

Buchanan, coming off a career-high 33 points against the Cougars, led the Blue Hens (16-6, 8-3 Colonial Athletic Association) once again with 15 points and nine rebounds while Green added 14 points, including three baskets from behind the arc.

Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds while freshman Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) dished out a career-best and game-high five assists for UD.

Towson (11-14, 5-7 CAA) collected an early lead, but coming out of the first media timeout of the game, Delaware went on a 17-3 run to take the 21-11 advantage with less than 10 minutes left in the first half.

The Blue Hens would never relinquish the lead, but the Tigers would threaten multiple times. Towson came within five at 36-31, but would never get closer as Delaware would go up by as much as 13 en route to the victory.

Towson suffered its third straight loss despite getting 18 points and 10 rebounds from LaTorri Hines-Allen and 11 points and 12 rebounds from CAA leading scorer Tanisha McTiller.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

"I thought we lost some focus today and we didn't play well in the second half at all. This group has really taken great strides in the last two to three weeks, but today we showed a bit of our youth again and had a little letdown. I wasn't happy that they beat us on the boards because we need to win that battle every game. The energy level just wasn't as high as I would have liked today."

Senior Kelsey Buchanan

"Our energy was not as high as it should have been today. We've improved a lot in various areas over the past few weeks, including toughness and rebounding, but we can always get better. It's something we're continuously working on."

SUBJECT: Delaware Winning Streak Comes To An End as Towson Posts 78-63 CAA Men's Basketball Victory Over Blue Hens

DATE: February 17, 2014

kmt:

TOWSON, Md. -- Towson senior forward Jerrelle Benimon scored 25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the Tigers ended the University of Delaware's winning streak with a 78-63 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory Monday night at SECU Arena.

The Tigers, who won their second straight game, improved to 18-9 overall and 9-3 in the league as Towson remained in second place in the conference standings, two games behind the league-leading Blue Hens.

Delaware, which dropped to 19-8 overall and 11-1 in conference play, had its 13-game winning streak snapped, which had been the sixth longest active run in Division I. The Blue Hens, who also lost their first CAA road game in nine outings dating back to last season, had their 15-game regular season CAA winning streak snapped.

Benimon finished 9 of 15 from the field and also handed out five assists, while recording his Division I leading 18th double-double of the campaign. Mike Burwell contributed 17 points and seven rebounds on the night, while Rafriel Guthrie chipped in with 15 points. Timajh Parker-Rivera was the fourth Tiger in double figures with 11 points to go with nine rebounds.

Blue Hen senior Davon Usher, who earned his second consecutive CAA Player of the Week award earlier in the day, again led Delaware with 24 points while going 12 of 15 from the free throw line. Devon Saddler added 18 points and had all four Blue Hen assists during the contest, while Carl Baptiste posted his second consecutive double-double with 10 points and a team-best 12 rebounds.

Delaware struggled from the field for most of the evening, finishing just 19 of 60 (31.7 percent) from the field including 4 of 20 from three-point range. Meanwhile Towson went 28 of 63 (44.4 percent) from the floor and held a 50-38 rebounding edge, including 21 offensive caroms.

"Congratulations to Towson, they played very well and were sharp tonight," said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "They outplayed us and outcoached us, and did just about everything better than we did. We weren't as sharp as we needed to be tonight to win on the road. I thought our first shot defense was pretty good, but we just gave up too many offensive rebounds."

Two Usher free throws put Delaware in front 8-7 early on, but the Tigers went on a 15-6 spurt to take an eight-point lead seven and a half minutes into the contest. However Delaware answered with a 10-2 run, knotting the game at 24-24 when Saddler found Baptiste for an emphatic dunk.

Later in the half a six-point Delaware run gave the Blue Hens a 30-28 lead, but the Tigers responded with a 9-2 spurt and led the rest of the way. Saddler drained a pair of foul shots to bring Delaware within three, before Benimon scored four more points to send Towson into the locker room leading 41-34.

The teams traded baskets early in the second half before the Tigers eventually took a double figure lead at 53-43 on a Marcus Damas foul shot with 13:35 to play. The Blue Hens closed to within five after two Usher foul shots at the 9:06 mark and were still only down six at 63-57 following a deep three-pointer by Usher with 7:19 to play.

But Towson responded with a decisive 10-0 run, going up 73-57 on a putback by Parker-Rivera with 3:50 on the clock. Usher countered with six straight points to bring Delaware to within 10 at the 2:36 mark, but the Blue Hens would not threaten from there.
