PHILADELPHIA ? Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) tied a career-high with 18 points as the University of Delaware women's basketball team picked up a crucial 55-50 win over Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel Tuesday evening at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

The victory marks the sixth straight for the Blue Hens, who improve to 17-6 overall and 9-3 in the CAA to retain sole possession of second place in the league. Drexel drops its second straight to fall to 12-13 overall and 7-5 in conference play to remain in third place. A matchup of the 2012 and 2013 CAA Championship, the two teams have now split the season series after Drexel defeated Delaware, 61-52, on Jan. 19.

Green posted a game-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field while knocking down four baskets from behind the arc. The guard added five rebounds and three assists for Delaware.

Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) came through in the clutch for the Blue Hens as the freshman collected career-highs of eight assists and five steals in addition to seven points and five rebounds.

Despite battling foul trouble the entire game, senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) registered a game-best seven rebounds in addition to eight points.

The three-point basket was the focal point of the night and that was immediately evident as Drexel's Megan Creighton opened the game with a trey and Green countered with her own just 30 seconds later.

The Dragons continued to go on a 12-2 run and led by as much as 10 following another three from Creighton just nine minutes in. The Blue Hens battled back and eventually tied things at 21-21 before holding a 25-24 lead at the half.

Drexel kicked off the second half by overtaking the lead and the two teams kept things close the entire way. With just under 10 minutes to go in the game, Delaware went on an 8-0 run, including two clutch layups from Brown, to go up, 45-41. The Dragons threatened multiple times with various three-point attempts, but the Hens would never look back en route to the win.

Tory Thierolf led Drexel with 16 points, including four three-pointers, in addition to six rebounds and three assists. Creighton tallied 12 points, all on treys while Abby Redick picked up eight points, seven rebounds and four assists in the loss.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

"I don't know how we won that game, but we came through in the end. We hung in there when we needed to and our kids didn't hang their heads when I was yelling at them. They stayed with it and we came out with the victory. It seemed as though our whole front line was in foul trouble early on and Stephanie Leon, Erika Brown and Alecia Bell stepped up huge. While it may not show up in the stats, our bench was crucial tonight. I'm happy to leave here with a win because Drexel is always a tough team and even more so on their home court.

Freshman Erika Brown

"We went into the lockerroom at halftime with a lead and coach was really harping on our defense. I felt that we did a better job and improved in the second half as Drexel didn't handle our pressure all that well. We were able to play through our fatigue and continued to play tough defense because we knew the offense would follow. This win meant a lot and this was a big game."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Holds Off Hofstra, 81-77, To Record 20th Win of Season

DATE: February 19, 2014

kmt:

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Devon Saddler converted a go-ahead layup with 47 seconds remaining and the Blue Hens got a couple of key stops late as the University of Delaware men's basketball team edged Hofstra, 81-77, Wednesday night at the Mack Sports Complex to secure its 20th win of the season.

The Blue Hens improved to 20-8 overall and 12-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, recording the seventh 20-win season in program history and the first since 2000-01. Delaware maintained its two-game lead over Towson in the conference standings, defeating Hofstra for the seventh consecutive meeting.

The win was the 110th for eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross, moving him into a tie for second place on the UD career wins list along with Irv Wisniewski.

Davon Usher again led the way with 27 points, leading the Blue Hens in scoring for the fifth straight game. Saddler, who became Delaware's career leader in free throws made and surpassed the 500-rebound mark, added 24 points on the night. Kyle Anderson contributed 18 points, his highest total since Dec. 30, while Carl Baptiste recorded his third consecutive double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Hofstra, which dropped to 8-20 overall and 4-9 in the conference, lost for the eighth time in nine games. Zeke Upshaw paced the Pride with 26 points, while Dion Nesmith added 22 on the night.

The Blue Hens trailed by nine points at the break, but scored 49 second half points to overcome a halftime deficit for the eighth time this season, Anderson scored eight of Delaware's first 10 second half points, while his triple from the left corner brought the Blue Hens within 46-42 with 16:40 to play.

Anderson later converted a driving layup to make it a one-point game, but Nesmith answered with the next eight Hofstra points as the Pride went back up eight at 59-51 at the 12-minute mark.

But Delaware would keep coming, as Saddler buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to again cut the Hofstra margin to a point before an Usher three-pointer knotted the contest at 65-65 with 7:42 remaining.

The Blue Hens went on top 71-68 on an Usher turnaround jumper, while a driving layup by Saddler put Delaware in front 75-73 with 2:25 to play. Upshaw quickly brought Hofstra even with a jumper, and the game remained tied until Saddler followed his own blocked shot with a layup to put UD up for good with 47 seconds left.

The Pride then missed a pair of three-pointers, before Nesmith's driving layup was off the mark and Anderson grabbed the rebound while getting fouled. The Blue Hen junior then drilled a pair of free throws at the other end, and Delaware held on from there to win for the 16th time in 19 CAA road games.

"We have a group that doesn't give up and knows what it takes to come back," said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "Hofstra was making some tough, contested shots in the first half, and I thought we were OK going into halftime just down nine. Kyle (Anderson) is a confident kid, and we have a lot of confidence in him."

Delaware misfired on its first eight shots from the field while Hofstra's early lead grew to 15-3 following a Jamall Robinson three-pointer, forcing a Blue Hen time out at the 13:09 mark.

Two Usher buckets cut the margin to 23-13 but Hofstra, which connected on six of its first nine three-point attempts, went back up 13 on a Chris Jenkins triple with four minutes to play in the period. The Pride led by as many as 15 points before Delaware countered with seven straight points, while a late free throw by Jordan Allen gave the Pride a 41-32 lead at the break.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Puts Up Valiant Effort But Falls Short to League-Leading James Madison, 72-61

DATE: February 20, 2014

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball squad battled the entire night, but the league-leading James Madison University kept the Blue Hens at bay and netted a 72-61 victory Thursday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware (17-7, 9-4 Colonial Athletic Association), which remains in second place in the CAA standings, had a six-game win streak snapped and lost for just the fourth time in 11 games at The Bob this season.

Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) led UD once again as she posted 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and also pulled down six rebounds while blocking four shots.

Redshirt Sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) added 12 points and seven rebounds while freshman Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) contributed seven points and eight rebounds for the Hens.

The Dukes went up by as much as 17 points in the second half before the Blue Hens battled back and pulled within 10 with 1:53 to go but would not get closer.

James Madison (22-4, 12-0 CAA) won its 12th straight game as Kirby Burkholder scored 19 points and pulled 14 rebounds. Toia Giggetts added 16 points and six rebounds while Jazmon Gwathmey picked up 10 points and eight rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

"They're so athletic and physically they pounded us a little bit, which is expected when you play a veteran team such as James Madison. They're athletic in every position, they get to the ball really well and they rebound extremely well. They've got a lot of good things going for them. Our young kids battled more today. They've grown up and definitely improved from the first time we played them, there's no doubt about it. For the rest of the season, our kids need to focus on one game at a time and take care of our own business."

Senior Kelsey Buchanan

"We never gave up and continued to fight hard to stay in the game. Our defense seemed to be the downfall today and they were just hitting a lot of shots. They have a lot of experience and kids who have played in tough games. We have to get back to work and play out the season one game at a time."

Redshirt Sophomore Joy Caracciolo

"We're proud that we stayed in it and continued to fight. We didn't get down and quit like we did last time. We were really disappointed by our performance. We're better than this loss and we know we can defend better than we did."

HEN SCRATCHINGS

· Delaware dropped two games to the same opponent in one season for the first time since 2010-11, also against James Madison.

· The Blue Hens are now 7-4 this season and 203-81 (.715) all-time at the Bob Carpenter Center.

· UD has had at least two players score in double digits in all 24 games this season.

SUBJECT: Drexel Holds Off University of Delaware Men's Basketball, 69-65, to Spoil Blue Hens' Senior Day

DATE:  February 22, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- The Drexel University men's basketball team used a crucial six-point run late in the contest to take the lead for good and held on for a 69-65 victory over the University of Delaware, spoiling the Blue Hens' Senior Day Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Tavon Allen scored a career-high 25 points for the Dragons, who improved to 15-12 overall and 7-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association and avenged a 90-77 setback to the Blue Hens back on Jan. 20 in Philadelphia.

Delaware's most-played and fiercest rivalry attracted a large and spirited gathering to the BCC Sunday as the sellout crowd of 5,122 was the eighth largest in 21-year history of the facility and the highest since the 2001-02 season.

Delaware senior Devon Saddler scored 20 points in his final regular season home game for the league-leading Blue Hens, who had a 10-game home winning streak snapped while falling to 20-9 overall and 12-2 in league play. The Hens, who went 10-2 at the BCC this season, lost at home for the first time since a 95-93 setback to Charleston Southern on Nov. 10.

Saddler, Delaware's all-time leading scorer, posted his 13th 20-point effort of the season. Fellow senior Davon Usher added 19 points on the afternoon while freshman Cazmon Hayes contributed a season-high 10 points. Senior Carl Baptiste narrowly missed his fourth consecutive double-double with nine points and a team-best 11 rebounds.

"I'm very thankful that our fans came out today," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "It's fitting to send our seniors out with a packed house. We probably took some shots we'd like to have back down the stretch, that's something we haven't done all year. Cazmon (Hayes) is playing with a lot of confidence, and his play was admirable for a young player."

Baptiste converted a putback to put Delaware in front 63-62 with 2:42 to play, but Saddler then missed four consecutive shots while the Dragons took advantage with six straight points to forge ahead 68-63 with 39 seconds left.

Usher was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit two free throws with 34 seconds remaining, but Drexel's Rodney Williams converted one free throw at the 29-second mark to push the lead to four. The Blue Hens then missed three straight shots, including a Saddler layup and two Kyle Anderson three-point attempts, and the Dragons ran out the clock for the victory.

Delaware came out strong, jumping out to a 10-1 lead four minutes into the contest thanks to three-pointers from Anderson and Usher and a dunk by Baptiste. But Drexel settled down and took the lead at 14-13 just five minutes later. After six lead changes, the Hens went into halftime up 33-31 on a Saddler three-pointer and a layup by Hayes over the final 1:29 of the stanza.

The Blue Hens will finish out the season on the road at UNCW (Feb. 26) and College of Charleston (Mar. 1) this week.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Rallies in Second Half To Defeat UNCW, 70-57; Clinches Share of CAA Regular Season Title

DATE: February 26, 2014

kmt:

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team rallied from a nine-point deficit in the second half by dominating the final 15 minutes as the Blue Hens posted a 70-57 victory over UNCW at Trask Coliseum Wednesday night to clinch at least a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title.

Delaware, which improved to 21-9 overall and 13-2 in the conference, remained a game in front of Towson with one contest remaining. The Blue Hens close out their regular season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at College of Charleston looking to clinch their first outright regular season CAA title, and their first overall since claiming the America East crown in 1998-99.

Delaware junior guard Jarvis Threatt returned from an eight-game absence to score a game-high 24 points, leading five Blue Hens in double figures. Threatt was 7 of 10 from the field while adding six assists and four steals, although he finished just 9 of 20 from the foul line. Davon Usher, Devon Saddler, and Kyle Anderson each contributed 11 points for Delaware, while Carl Baptiste recorded his fourth double-double in five games with 10 points and a game-best 16 rebounds.

The win gave eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross 111 career victories, moving him into sole possession of second place on the Delaware career wins list. UD improved to 6-1 in CAA road games this year, and has now won 17 of its last 20 conference road contests.

Tanner Milson scored 11 points to lead UNCW, who dropped to 9-22 overall and 3-13 in conference play.

After both teams struggled from the field during a tightly contested opening 20 minutes, Threatt found Cazmon Hayes for a layup in the final seconds to give Delaware a 29-25 halftime lead.

However the Seahawks opened the second half with a 13-0 run as Delaware missed its first 11 shots from the floor, while a Milson triple gave UNCW a 38-29 advantage and forced a Blue Hen timeout with 15:53 remaining.

Anderson finally put Delaware on the board in the second half with a three-pointer at the 15:23 mark, while Usher connected from long range to give the Blue Hens their first lead of the half at 44-43 with 12:03 left.

It was still a two-point game two and a half minutes later, before Baptiste and Threatt scored to increase Delaware's cushion to 54-48 with 8:39 to play. The Seahawks closed to within 56-51 with six and a half minutes to go, but the Blue Hens answered with a 9-2 spurt, went up 65-53 on a three-point play by Threatt, and were not threatened from there.

"I'm really happy to be able to come out and get a win on the road, especially since UNCW has been playing well at home," Ross said. "We were really sharp defensively, and were able to take them out of what they were trying to do. Jarvis is a difficult matchup and is hard to guard. I'm hoping he has the burst of energy he had tonight throughout the rest of the season."

Both teams struggled from the field during the opening half, as the lead changed 10 times and neither squad led by more than four points. The Blue Hens trailed 22-20 with 5:42 remaining in the half but closed the period with a 9-3 spurt as Threatt found Hayes for a layup to give Delaware a 29-25 advantage at the break.

Delaware went just 14 of 34 from the free throw line for the night, but shot 46.7 percent from the field in the second half to eventually pull away. The Blue Hens limited UNCW to 30.8 percent shooting during the contest, including just 5 of 20 shooting from behind the arc.

The Hens will close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to the College of Charleston for a 2 pm matchup. A win by Delaware or a loss by Towson against William & Mary will give the Hens the outright CAA regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.

"I don't care how ugly tonight's game was, it was win number 18, number 10 in the conference and we're in second place in the CAA. I'm just happy to get out of here with a win. That's all that matters. Our young players are really struggling right now and Akeema Richards stepped up big time tonight as a senior. She played huge, hats off to her. She gets what the word team is all about. Her minutes have gone down in the recent weeks, but she kept her head up and has been all for the team. Akeema's decision-making tonight was exceptional and she really paid attention to what we talked about all night."

Senior Akeema Richards

[On playing time as of late]: "Coach has told me to be patient and my time would come. I knew I needed to stay focused these past few weeks. Jodi, Courtni, and Erika have all been playing really well and I'm going to support my team no matter what. Whatever I need to do for them to get the win, I'm going to do it. I've always been a team player and when Coach asks me to do something or when it's time to let other players step up, I'm not going to have any problems doing it. I'm not going to take it personal or take any offense to not playing. When I do play, I'm going to play my heart out."

[On win vs. Hofstra]: "This was definitely a statement game. We needed this 'W' to gain confidence going to Northeastern and then the conference tournament coming up in a couple of weeks."

HEN SCRATCHINGS

· Delaware snapped a two-game losing streak.

· With a win at Northeastern, the Blue Hens would lock up the second seed in the conference standings.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Holds Off College of Charleston, 89-86, To Claim Outright CAA Regular Season Title

DATE: March 1, 2014

kmt:

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team held off College of Charleston, 89-86, Saturday afternoon at TD Arena as the Blue Hens secured their first outright Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship.

The Blue Hens, who closed the year with impressive road wins over UNCW and the Cougars, end the regular season with a 22-9 overall record including a 14-2 mark in league play. Delaware has earned the top seed in next weekend's CAA Tournament in Baltimore, and will take on either eighth-seeded Hofstra or ninth-seeded UNCW at 12 noon on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Delaware claimed its eighth regular season conference title in school history, and the first since the 1998-99 squad captured the America East Conference championship.

"For all the hard work that our guys have put in to culminate in a championship is special," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "I'm so proud of these guys to be able to come on the road and win twice this week. I'm very privileged to coach this group. We have really quality guys on our club, and I'm very happy we could win a championship."

Devon Saddler, playing the final regular season game of his illustrious Blue Hen career, poured in a team-high 24 points to lead Delaware to its eighth road victory in nine conference games. Fellow senior Carl Baptiste added 21 points and six boards, while classmate Davon Usher contributed 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Usher now ranks sixth on the UD single season scoring list with 602 points and becomes just the fourth player in Blue Hen history to score 600 points in a season along with Mike Pegues, Greg Smith and Saddler.

Junior Jarvis Threatt scored 13 points, dished out a career-high 13 assists against just one turnover, and made five steals during a tremendous all-around effort. Threatt's 13 helpers were four shy of the school record, and the most since Mike Slattery handed out 15 against William & Mary on Feb. 1, 2003.

Kyle Anderson chipped in 11 points and knocked down three triples for the Blue Hens, who scored 89 points against a Cougars team that came in allowing just 61.6 points per contest. Delaware shot 48.3 percent from the field, buried eight three-pointers, and was 23 of 29 from the free throw line as the Blue Hens tied the school record by reaching the 80-point mark for the 17th time this season.

Freshman Canyon Barry led all scorers with 27 points for CofC, which dropped to 14-17 overall and 6-10 in league play. Willis Hall and Nori Johnson each contributed 13 points while Anthony Stitt had 11 for the Cougars, who knocked down 13 of 26 three-point attempts and were 17 of 22 from the foul line.

The Cougars took a 45-39 halftime lead and opened the second period with a bucket to go up eight, before a quick seven-point run by the Blue Hens brought UD back within a single point. Two Baptiste free throws at the 14:05 mark gave Delaware its first lead of the second half at 52-51, but Barry answered with a triple as the teams went back and forth.

Later Johnson drained a contested triple to put CofC back up three but Delaware countered with a 7-0 spurt, as an Anderson three capped the run and gave the Blue Hens a 74-70 advantage with 5:33 left.

Stitt buried a jumper to bring the Cougars within a pair, but Usher converted a fastbreak layup before Saddler scored on a floater to put the Blue Hens in front 78-72 with 3:18 remaining. CofC clawed back within three and had a chance to tie in the final minute, but Johnson's three-point attempt from the left corner was off the mark, and Delaware went 6 of 6 from the foul line from there to seal the victory. It was a six-point game before Barry's last second three-pointer accounted for the final margin.

The win gave the Blue Hens their 11th road victory of the season, and Delaware has now won 18 of its last 21 CAA road contests.

After the teams were knotted at 5-5 early on, Delaware used a 9-2 run and went in front 14-7 when Threatt found Baptiste for a dunk five minutes into the contest. Later in the half CofC responded with a 16-6 run, taking its first lead since the early going when Johnson converted a four-point play to make it a 26-24 game.

A last second three-pointer by Johnson gave CofC a 45-39 halftime advantage, as the Cougars posted their highest first half output of the year. But Delaware put up 50 points in the second half as the Blue Hens overcame their ninth halftime deficit of the season.

SUBJECT: Northeastern University Hands University of Delaware Women's Basketball 54-53 Heartbreaking Loss in Final Seconds

DATE: March 2, 2014

mh:

BOSTON, Mass. ? Jewel Tunstull knocked down a layup with five seconds left on the clock as Northeastern University came from behind to defeat the University of Delaware women's basketball team, 54-53, at the Cabot Center to conclude regular season play for the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, Delaware was presumed to fall out of second place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings, but fate would be on its side. Minutes following their loss to the Huskies, the Blue Hens (18-9, 10-6 CAA) learned of losses by Drexel and the College of Charleston to therefore clinch the second seed in the league standings and upcoming CAA Tournament.

Delaware is the two-time defending CAA regular season and CAA Tournament champions and will defend its title March 13-16 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Delaware, which led for the majority of the contest, was held without a single point for the final 5:28 as Northeastern (12-16, 6-9 CAA) finished the game on a 7-2 run.

Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) led the Blue Hens with 12 points, all tallied off of three-point baskets. Green added three steals and two assists for Delaware.

Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) posted 11 points for UD in addition to six rebounds. Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) also collected six rebounds while registering nine points and four steals. Freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) dished out a game-high five assists while also recording six points.

Northeastern had four players score in double figures and were led by Samantha DeFreese's 13 points and nine rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

Thankfully Drexel and Charleston lost as well and we will remain the second seed in the CAA. We have about a week and a half before the tournament and we're going to take some time off. We're mentally fatigued and we have to recapture our focus. I'm very proud of this team and they have worked hard to earn 18 wins and the second seed."

BALTIMORE (March 7, 2014) ? Senior forward Zeke Upshaw led fives Hofstra double-figure scorers with 23 points, and the Pride outscored UNCW 9-0 during the final 1:58 to post a 78-70 victory Friday in the opening-round game of the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship at the Baltimore Arena.

UNCW, which trailed 58-50 with 8:28 remaining, took a 70-69 lead on sophomore guard Craig Ponder's three-pointer with 2:27 left. But Hofstra went back in front on freshman guard Jamall Robinson's three-point play at 1:58 after an offensive rebound and then converted on four of six free throws while UNCW missed on each of its six field goal tries the rest of the way.

The victory sends eighth-seeded Hofstra (10-22) into Saturday's noon quarterfinal game against top-seeded and league regular-season champion Delaware. Ninth-seeded UNCW completed its season with a 9-23 record.

After Robinson's three-point play, Hofstra got single free throws from senior Stephen Nwaukoni at 1:33 and junior center Moussa Kone at 0:45, two free throws from senior guard Dion Nesmith at 0:31 and a fastbreak dunk from Nwaukoni at 0:13. UNCW missed on a three-point attempt and follow shot after Robinson's go-ahead points and on two attempts from three-point range and twice on two-point tries during the final 1:16.

Upshaw hit on seven of 15 shots, including four of seven three-point attempts. The second-team all-league honoree also had three rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot while playing 40 minutes.

Nesmith added 15 points, Kone 11 points and nine rebounds, Nwaukoni 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and Robinson 10 points for the Pride. Hofstra had a 44-29 rebounding advantage and hit on 19 of 31 free throws to 12 of 14 by UNCW. Hofstra shot 50.9 percent overall from the field (27-53) to UNCW's 37.9 percent (25-66).

Ponder scored a game-high 24 points for UNCW, including hitting for three field goals from three-point range and on nine of 11 free throws. Junior guard Freddie Jackson with 16 points was the Seahawks' only other double-figure scorer.

Hofstra led 39-35 after shooting 50 percent (15-30) from the field and out-rebounding the Seahawks 23-12 during the first half. Upshaw had 10 first-half points for the Pride, and Ponder kept UNCW close during the period with 14 points, including two of his team's five first-half three-pointers.

UNCW scored the second half's first four points to pull even at 39 and trailed only 50-48 with 14 minutes left. Hofstra's 58-50 lead came on an Nwaukoni free throw after Upshaw had scored six of his team's previous seven points.

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 8, 2014) Junior forward Scott Eatherton scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead fifth-seeded Northeastern (11-20) to a 90-81 victory over fourth-seeded Drexel (16-14) in the quarterfinals of the CAA Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Baltimore Arena.

The win pushed the Huskies, who scored a season high 90 points, into Sunday's 2:30 p.m. semifinal against top-seeded Delaware, an 87-76 winner over Hofstra earlier today.

It was the 55th meeting between the two schools and the second in a week. Northeastern closed out the regular season last Saturday with a come-from-behind 45-42 victory over the Dragons on three David Walker free throws with 6.7 seconds left. It wasn't as tight in the third game of the season.

Drexel broke from the gate on an 11-4 run. Senior guard Chris Fouch gave the Dragons the seven-point lead on a short jumper at the 15:14 mark, but that would prove to be Drexel's last field goal for the next 9:33. The Huskies took advantage of the drought to mount a 16-2 run.

Walker knotted the score at 13-13 on a floater at the 11:15 mark. Eatherton, who had his 19th double-double of the year in the first half (11 points, 11 rebounds), put the Huskies ahead (14-13) for the first time making good on the front end of a two-shot foul. On the next trip down the floor he buried a three-pointer to send the Huskies on their way.

Sophomore guard Tavon Allen ended Drexel's scoring slump on a layup but Northeastern had climbed to a 20-15 lead. The Huskies immediately answered Allen's basket with a 13-2 run to give them their biggest lead of the half, 33-17, with 2:03 left before intermission. Northeastern took a 35-21 lead into the locker room.

Northeastern improved its lead to 17 points (51-34) before Fouch ignited a Dragon rally with three triples that chipped away at the Huskies' lead. Fouch, who was held to just four points in the first half, poured in 26 in the second half to finish with a game high 30 points before fouling out in the final minute.

The Dragons wouldn't go away. Senior guard Frantz Massenat, making his 128th career start for Drexel, twice trimmed Northeastern's lead to six (85-79 and 87-81) in the final 39 seconds but the Dragons couldn't get any closer with the Huskies making the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe. Northeastern went 32 of 44 at the free throw line.

Eatherton led four Huskies in double figures. Sophomore forward Zach Stahl (19), Walker (18) and freshman guard T.J. Williams with 12. Williams led the free throw effort going 10 for 12. Stahl also contributed 12 rebounds.

Massenat finished with 19 points. Rodney Williams added 11 for the Dragons.

SUBJECT: Usher, Threatt Lead University of Delaware Men's Basketball To 87-76 Comeback Win Over Hofstra in CAA Tournament Quarterfinals

DATE: March 8, 2014

kmt:

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Davon Usher scored a game-high 28 points while Jarvis Threatt scored all but four of his 22 points in the second half as the University of Delaware men's basketball team pulled away for an 87-76 win over Hofstra Saturday afternoon in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals at Baltimore Arena.

The top-seeded Blue Hens, who won their third straight game and improved to 23-9 on the season, advance to the CAA Semifinals for the second straight year, and will face the winner Northeastern on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. No. 5 Northeastern defeated No. 4 Drexel 90-81 in their quarterfinal game.

Usher, playing is his hometown of Baltimore, led Delaware with eight rebounds, knocked down four three-pointers and was 8 of 10 from the foul line as he reached double figures for the 21st straight game and moved into fifth place on the UD single season scoring list. Threatt went 6 of 7 from the floor during his stellar second half, while dishing out a team-high four assists on the afternoon.

Devon Saddler chipped in with 15 points for the Blue Hens while Kyle Anderson added 12, as both players finished 7 of 8 from the foul line. Delaware shot just 38.7 percent during the opening 20 minutes, but went 14 of 22 from the field (63.6%) and 20 of 25 from the charity stripe while putting up 50 second half points.

The Blue Hens posted their 10th victory of the season after trailing at halftime, including all three of their victories over Hofstra.

"I felt that we had to get the jitters out in the first half, and once we did, we imposed our will during the second half," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross, who earned CAA Coach of the Year honors on Thursday. "We just allowed too many layups early on, and wanted them to make some contested jumpers in the second period. We have a bunch of guys who don't panic, and they understand that you have to play all 40 minutes this time of year."

The eighth-seeded Pride ended its season with a 10-23 record, as Hofstra fell to Delaware for the eighth consecutive meeting. Zeke Upshaw paced the Pride with 23 points, while Dion Nesmith added 16 and Stephen Nwaukoni contributed 13 during the game.

Hofstra opened the game by hitting its first four field goal attempts and the Pride went up as many as nine in the opening half, the second time at 28-19 following a jumper by Nwaukoni.

Delaware immediately answered with a 13-4 spurt, tying the game at 32-32 on two Saddler free throws at the 3:48 mark. However Upshaw countered with consecutive three-pointers, while Barnett Harris scored on a putback in the final seconds to cut the Pride advantage to 40-37 at the break.

Usher then opened the second half with a three-pointer, while on the Blue Hens' next possession Threatt converted a three-point play to give Delaware its first lead of the contest. UD scored 11 of the first 13 points during the second stanza, going in front 48-42 on another Usher triple with 17 and a half minutes left.

Hofstra climbed back within three but Threatt converted a fastbreak dunk and then drained a leaner in the paint, giving the Blue Hens a 58-51 advantage at the 12-minute mark.

Delaware led by at least five points from there, and took a double digit lead at 71-61 when Usher capped off a three-point play at the 7:22 mark. The Pride clawed within six a little over a minute later, but the Blue Hens responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points to take their largest lead of the day at 79-67 on a Carl Baptiste dunk with 3:56 to play.

Hofstra closed the margin to 80-75 with 1:02 on the clock, but the Blue Hens went 7 of 8 from the foul line from there to ice the victory.

"We knew we'd be able to score, so if we could hold down Hofstra in the second half, we'd be alright," Usher said.

Delaware eclipsed the 80-point mark for the 18th time this season, setting a new UD single season record.

Delaware Uses Big Second-Half Run To Defeat Northeastern 87-74 In CAA Semifinals

Delaware erupted in the second half and ran away from fifth-seeded Northeastern, 87-74 in the first semifinal contest of the 2014 CAA men's basketball championship on Sunday at Baltimore Arena.

The top-seeded Blue Hens (24-9) advanced to the CAA title game for the first time and will face either second-seeded Towson or third-seeded William & Mary at 7 p.m. on Monday night with a chance to hoist the league's trophy.

Jarvis Threatt scored 19 points and grabbed a team-high 11 boards for a double-double and Davon Usher tallied 21 points in the victory. All five UD starters registered double-figures, including Devon Saddler, who had 19 points and nine assists, Kyle Anderson, who scored 10 points and Carl Baptiste, who supplied 14 in only 16 minutes of action.

Northeastern's Scott Eatherton netted 20 points and grabbed eight boards and Reggie Spencer had 18 points and eight rebounds in defeat. The Huskies (11-21) beat fourth-seeded Drexel, 90-81, on Saturday, and made their fourth semifinal appearance and third in the last five years.

The Blue Hens, who captured their first regular-season title with a 14-2 conference mark, were ferocious in the second half, shooting 76 percent (19-of-25) from the floor, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc.

In the first half, Threatt and Usher combined for 23 points, scoring 11 and 12 apiece, respectively, to help UD stake a 39-37 advantage at the break. NU stayed within striking distance thanks to out-rebounding the Blue Hens 23-14, while Spencer and Eatherton combined for 16 points and 13 boards alone for the Huskies over the first 20 minutes.

The early potion of the final 20 minutes proved to be NU's demise, as the Blue Hens rarely missed an opportunity or shot, for that matter. Anderson's 3-pointer from the right wing with 11:19 remaining capped an impressive, 27-11 run which saw UD extend its edge to 18 (66-48).

From there, the hot-shooting Hens' offense was able to outlast the Huskies, even stretching the lead as high as 22, before holding on down the line for the key win.

After a slow start hobbled the Hens in Saturday's quarterfinals versus Hofstra, UD wasted little time on Sunday, racing out to a quick 19-5 lead seven-plus minutes into the action. Northeastern impressively responded, however, with its own 19-5 run to tie the game at 24-all following an old fashioned three-point play by Eatherton.

The rest of the first half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team obtaining a lead greater than five points.

Northeastern now owns an 8-9 all-time record in CAA tournament play, while Eatherton ends his historic junior campaign with 19 double-doubles, two behind Towson's Jerrelle Benimon for the NCAA Division I lead.

Delaware earned a return trip to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time since 1999 after the Blue Hens slipped by William & Mary for a heart-stopping 75-74 victory in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title game Monday night at the Baltimore Arena.

Carl Baptiste was nearly unstoppable inside, scoring a career-high 24 points, including the winning bucket with 13 seconds left, to lift the No. 1 seed Blue Hens (25-9) to their fifth straight victory and first ever CAA Tournament crown since joining the league in 2001-02.

The Blue Hens will find out where they are headed this Sunday, March 16, when the 68-team field is announced.

"I can't say enough about this group, and the way they just stick with it," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross, the CAA Coach of the Year who had led the Blue Hens to their first CAA Tournament title game appearance since he took over the helm in 2006-07. "To be down six late and just keep playing, I couldn't be prouder of their resiliency. I love these guys, they are tremendous. To cap it off like this is really special."

The Blue Hens needed a huge stop in the final seconds to complete the late comeback and they got it. William & Mary guard Marcus Thornton, who finished with 22 points, had the chance to win it in the waning seconds but his 20-foot jumper was off the mark and the horn sounded with the ball in the air.

The victory set off a wild on-court celebration as a large throng of UD students and fans stormed the court to join their fellow Blue Hens.

"I wanted to get the ball to Devon (Saddler), but he said 'get it to Carl,' " said Ross of the play that resulted in the winning basket. "There were a lot of bodies inside, but he was able to power it in there."

Tournament Most Outstanding Player Jarvis Threatt added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Hens while Saddler contributed 16 points and five assists to lead yet another balanced effort. Kyle Anderson also finished with nine points, including two big three-pointers in the second half, and Davon Usher, who had scored 28 and 21 points in the Hens' first two tournament wins, was held to just eight points but contributed several big three-pointers down the stretch and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Threatt was joined on the CAA All-Tournament team by Baptiste and Saddler as well as William & Mary's Thornton and Brandon Britt and Northeastern's Scott Eatherton.

"I wish I could give the (MVP) trophy to the whole team," expressed Threatt, a junior guard who scored 59 points, pulled 21 rebounds, and dished out 14 assists in the three tournament games. "To be named Most Outstanding Player is just a blessing, and I couldn't be more proud of our seniors."

Delaware led for the entire second half before the No. 3 seed Tribe used a 7-0 run to take their first lead since late in the opening half at 69-65 with 3:30 left to play as Thornton drained a three-pointer.

Usher connected on a three-pointer for Delaware with 3:24 left but Thornton answered with a jumper and Prewitt drained a three-pointer from the left corner to cap a 12-5 Tribe run and push the lead to 74-68 with 1:15 remaining.

Saddler hit two free throws with 1:10 left to cut the gap to 74-70 and Prewitt missed a free throw to give Delaware possession.

Threatt then drove down the lane and converted an acrobatic layup and was fouled with 51 seconds left. He finished off the three-point play with a free throw that pulled Delaware to within 74-73 and the Hens got possession back again after Usher rebounded a Thornton missed jumper with 25 seconds left.

Delaware called a timeout to set up a play and it worked perfectly as Saddler found Baptiste inside and the senior laid it in for the winning basket. Baptiste finished the night hitting on 9 of 11 shots from the field and pulling eight rebounds.

"Carl had it going all game and they couldn't stop him down low," said Saddler of the winning basket. "So I told Coach Ross to get him the ball."

"This whole team just has so much trust in each other, and I wasn't going to let them down," said Baptiste, whose previous scoring high was 23 against William & Mary back on Feb. 29 in Williamsburg, Va.

William & Mary (20-12), making its third CAA Tournament final appearance since 2008, also got 16 points from Tim Rusthoven and 14 points off the bench from Prewitt, the league Rookie of the Year.

The Blue Hens took all three games from the Tribe this season, including a 76-71 win on Jan. 15 at the Bob Carpenter Center and the 89-72 victory Feb. 29.

The Hens have won seven straight over the Tribe but the game marked the first time the two had met in the CAA Tournament.

Delaware, which was making its first tournament championship game appearance since falling to Hofstra in the 2001 America East title match, captured its fifth conference title in school history and will be headed for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time, joining the 1991-92, 1992-93, 1997-98, and 1998-99 squads that also advanced.

The Hens' 25 wins are now tied for the second most in school history and highest total since the 1998-99 NCAA Tournament team won that many.

The teams began the game on a frantic pace with William & Mary scoring on six of its first eight possessions and taking a 16-9 lead in the first five minutes.

But Delaware used a 9-0 run to take the lead at 29-24 with Baptiste scoring twice inside, Threatt driving the lane for a layup, and Anderson knocking down his first three-pointer of the night.

The Tribe answered right back as Rusthoven scored six straight points to give his team a 30-29 lead. Delaware rallied late, scoring the final six points, including a Threatt jumper just before the halftime horn to give the Hens a 39-33 advantage at the break.

Delaware came out strong in the second half, scoring 8 of the first 10 points of the stanza, and built its biggest lead at 47-35 just over three minutes in. The Hens then stayed in front until William & Mary's 6-0 flurry in the final minutes.

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware's journey back to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has been a long one.And so will the trip to actually play the game.

The Colonial Athletic Association champion Blue Hens found out their NCAA destination Sunday night and Delaware is headed across the country to Spokane, Wash. to take on Big 10 champion Michigan State in the second round this Thursday, Mar. 20. The game time will be announced on Monday.

A crowd of well over 500 exuberant Delaware students and fans packed the Carpenter Sports Building for the NCAA Watch Party and had to endure a long wait until the final segment of the live CBS TV announcement. When Delaware's name finally came up beside Michigan State in the East Region, a roar went up throughout the arena.

The No. 13 seed Blue Hens (25-9), riding a five-game win streak, are headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history but for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign. Delaware will take on a Michigan State team that is a perennial NCAA championship contender and captured national titles in 1979 and 2000.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for us to be back in the NCAA Tournament," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross, the CAA Coach of the Year. "Playing a tournament-tested team like Michigan State with a Hall of Fame caliber coach in Tom Izzo is an exciting opportunity for our program. We will embrace that opportunity and will be ready for the challenge."Also playing in the Spokane first round games on Thursday will be No. 5 seed Cincinnati (27-6) taking on No. 12 Harvard (26-4), No. 5 Oklahoma (23-9) facing No. 12 North Dakota State (25-6), and No. 4 San Diego State (29-4) facing No. 13 New Mexico State (29-7).

The Spartans, who finished second in the Big Ten regular season standings with a 12-6 conference mark, held the top spot in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls for three weeks in the early portion of the season, and is ranked No. 22 in this week's polls.

Gary Harris leads the Spartans by averaging 17.1 points per game, while Adreian Payne has added 15.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest. Keith Appling chips in with 12.3 points per game to go with a team-high 144 assists, while Branden Dawson is the fourth Spartan averaging double figures with 10.4 points while grabbing a team-best 8.3 boards per game.

Delaware is paced by senior guard Devon Saddler, the third leading active scorer in Division I who leads the Blue Hens with 19.7 points per game. Davon Usher, a first team All-CAA selection along with Saddler, is averaging 19.4 points per contest, while CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Jarvis Threatt is contributing 18.1 points to go with 139 assists.

Senior Carl Baptiste is averaging 11.3 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game for the Blue Hens, while junior Kyle Anderson is the fifth Blue Hen averaging double figures at 11.0 points per contest. Delaware has won five consecutive games, including Monday's pulsating 75-74 last second win over William & Mary in the CAA Tournament final in Baltimore.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Draws Thursday Road Game at Rutgers in Postseason WNIT

mlh:

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team learned its Postseason WNIT fate late Monday evening as the Blue Hens were paired off to compete against Rutgers University Thursday in Piscataway, N.J. Game time will be announced Tuesday.

"We are excited to be participating in the 2014 Postseason WNIT and to play against Rutgers for the first time in program history in over 35 years," remarked head coach Tina Martin, who is in her 18th season at Delaware. "This gives our young squad another terrific opportunity to play in the postseason and gain more experience. We have had tremendous support from our fans all season and hope that they can make the trip to see us play in Piscataway."

The Blue Hens are 20-10 on the season while finishing second in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware, a NCAA Sweet 16 participant last season, had its hopes dashed of a third consecutive CAA title and trip to the NCAA Tournament yesterday as the Hens fell to James Madison University.

Delaware will be participating in postseason play for the fifth straight year and in the WNIT for the seventh time. The Blue Hens last appeared in the WNIT in 2011 when they fell to Toledo 58-55 in the opening round.

The Scarlet Knights currently stand at 22-9 overall and finished in fourth place in its first season in the American Athletic Conference. The team is led by legendary Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer, who has amassed 923 career victories in 43 seasons as a head coach at RU, Iowa and Cheyney.

Delaware and Rutgers have previously faced off just twice in women's basketball history with both meetings coming in postseason play.

The Blue Hens defeated the Scarlet Knights, 97-56, on March 12, 1976 in the EAIAW Regionals. The following season, No. 8 Rutgers edged out Delaware, 78-75, in the EAIAW Regionals on March 11, 1977.

SUBJECT: Feeling the Payne: University of Delaware's NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Hopes Dashed as Michigan State Posts 93-78 Victory

DATE:  March 20, 2014
sws:

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament will always involve a little bit of pain.

Unfortunately for the University of Delaware men's basketball squad, the Blue Hens received a double dose of it Thursday afternoon in its second round game at the Spokane Arena.

Making their first appearance at the Big Dance since 1999, the No. 13 seed Blue Hens fought hard to the end before falling to No. 4 seed and 11th ranked Michigan State 93-78.

And the person doing most of the damage for the Spartans was Adreian Payne. The senior center scored an MSU NCAA Tournament and Spokane Arena record 41 points, draining 10 of 15 field goal attempts and hitting all 17 free throw attempts.

His 41-point performance was the highest against the Hens this season - and the most against UD since 2010 - and his total was the most by any player in the NCAA Tournament since 2008.

Colonial Athletic Association champion Delaware (25-10) had a five-game win streak snapped but closed out one of the most successful seasons in school history. The 25 wins was the second highest in school history and the NCAA Tournament appearance was just the fifth ever for the Blue Hens.

"Congratulations to Coach (Tom) Izzo and Michigan State," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross, the CAA Coach of the Year. "They are obviously a very good basketball team and an outstanding program. But I can't say enough about our team and our program.

"We have gotten to the point where we are not into moral victories," said Ross. "Our guys are so competitive and I was really proud of their effort tonight. But I have been proud of them all year long. This is such a special group and I think we represented the University well."

Led by the backcourt trio of seniors Devon Saddler and Davon Usher and junior Jarvis Threatt, the Blue Hens stayed in the game until the final minutes.

Saddler, Delaware's all-time leading scorer with 2,222 points, finished his career with a 21-point effort, while Usher contributed 20 and set the UD single season scoring record with 679 points.

After falling behind by 11 points at halftime, the Hens came out and scored the first six points of the second stanza on a Saddler three-point play and a long three-pointer by Usher off an inbounds pass to cut the lead to 44-39.

But the Spartans scored 8 of the next 10 points to push the lead to 11 and held a double figure lead the rest of the way.

Delaware rallied late, scoring six straight points to cut the margin to 85-75 with 2:35 left but Payne, as he did all day, answered with four straight points to remove any doubt of the outcome.

"He was on fire," said Delaware center Carl Baptiste who had the tall task of guarding Payne all day and eventually fouled out with 2:08 left. "Once he got his jumper going he was very tough to stop. He has a very good turnaround jumper and is a very good player."

Michigan State (27-8) now advances to the third round where the Spartans will play Harvard, a second round winner over Cincinnati earlier Thursday, on Saturday.

"I would like to give a lot of credit to Monte," said Izzo. "Those three guards (Saddler, Usher, and Threatt) do a lot of things. Its amazing how much they get to the free throw line and they did that all year long. We survived today but I think we learned something and we'll grow from it."

Delaware cut the Michigan State lead to 24-18 when Threatt converted a driving layup with 9:42 left in the first half. But Payne then went to work, carrying the Spartans on his back. The 6-10 center proceeded to score the next 17 points for the Spartans over a six minute span, and when he was done his team was up 36-18.

But Delaware refused to give up and rallied back. The Blue Hens then used an 11-0 run of their own - highlighted by two Usher three-pointers and a dunk by Marvin King-Davis - to get back in the game and cut the margin to 36-29 with 3:08 left.

Michigan State then scored the final three points of the half to take a 44-33 lead into the break.

Travis Trice came off the bench to add 19 points for Michigan State while Gary Harris and Branden Dawson each scored 10. Payne and Dawson each pulled eight rebounds for MSU as part of a 42-24 advantage on the boards.

Threatt led the Hens with six rebounds while Baptiste and Usher each pulled five rebounds and Saddler dished out a team-high four assists. Delaware committed only eight turnovers all day but shot just 36.4 percent (20 of 55) form the field.

Hen Scratchings:

? Ross cleared the bench in the final moments with backups Tommy Williams, Dylan Miller, Sean Locke, Tom Allshouse, and Cazmon Hayes all seeing action. Locke even scored a point with a free throw with 14 second left
? Delaware's 25 wins tied for the second most in school history, trailing only the 1991-92 team that went 27-4 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament
? Saddler played in his school-record 124th game, tying the mark set by his former teammate Jamelle Hagins last season
? Kyle Anderson and Usher each finished the season with 85 three-pointers, one shy of the UD single season record
? Saddler finished No. 6 on the all-time CAA scoring list with 2,222 points
? The game marked the 15th time this season that more than one Delaware player surpassed the 20-point mark
? The 78 points by Delaware was the fifth most allowed by the Spartans this season

DATE: March 20, 2014

PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball squad held things close throughout the whole game, but in the end the Blue Hens were unable to come out victorious as Rutgers ended UD's season by a score of 65-61 Thursday evening in the first round of the WNIT.

Despite its youth, Delaware exceeded expectations and earned its fifth straight berth into postseason play by finishing second in the Colonial Athletic Association. Additionally, the Blue Hens collected their 12th 20-win season in the past 15 years while wrapping the 2013-14 campaign with a mark of 20-11.

Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) led the Hens with a career-best 19 points while tying a career-high with five three-pointers made. The guard added six rebounds and two assists.

Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) tied a career-best with 17 points in addition to a team-high eight rebounds.

Junior Stephanie Leon (Northport, N.Y.) recorded a defensive gem for UD by recording a team season-high five blocked shots.

Delaware challenged the Scarlet Knights the entire evening as the two teams exchanged the lead four times and registered eight score ties.

The Hens tied things at 42-42 off a jumper from senior Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) with 10:18 remaining in the game before Rutgers went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes. UD never fully recovered from the outburst, but pulled the game within five with just over two minutes left on the clock.

A Richards' free throw with 1:01 cut the deficit to four at 65-61, but the Hens were unable to capitalize on three RU turnovers in the waning minutes.

Rutgers (23-9) had four players score in double figures and was led by Tyler Scaife's 22 points while Betnijah Laney registered a double double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

"For their first WNIT experience, our kids followed the game plan very well. We gave ourselves the opportunity to stay in the game and certainly to win the game. This is a very young basketball team and our kids held their composure very well. They stepped up and put their best foot forward with a very good Rutgers team. Delaware has a tradition of winning and this young group will be back to postseason action in the future."

Sophomore Courtni Green

"It was a good experience to be able to play in the postseason and with that, play a good team like Rutgers. We took it all in, listened to our coaches, came out and gave our best effort against a tough team."

Redshirt Sophomore Joy Caracciolo

"This game was a good way to end our season as it gave us more experience to play in the postseason and against such a good team as Rutgers. Being able to stay with them throughout the game gives us a lot of confidence going into next season."

HEN SCRATCHINGS

· Delaware is 0-7 all-time in the WNIT.

· All-CAA First Team selection Kelsey Buchanan[/B] (South Riding, Va.) was in foul trouble the entire evening and ended up playing just 15 minutes before fouling out of the contest. Buchanan finished with five points, three rebounds and two assists in the final game of her career.

SUBJECT: Liberty Edges University of Delaware Men's Basketball, 61-55, in Blue Hens' Season Opener

DATE: November 17, 2014

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team held a two-point lead with three minutes remaining but missed its final seven shots from there as Liberty edged the Blue Hens, 61-55, Monday night at the Vines Center in UD's season opener.

Maurice Jeffers slammed home a follow dunk at the 3:03 mark to put Delaware in front 55-53, but Liberty's Davis Andoh hit one free throw before burying a tough 18-foot jumper with 1:38 remaining to give the Flames the lead for good. The Blue Hens had the ball in the final minute, but Blue Hen freshman Chivarsky Corbett's three-point attempt from the right corner was off the mark, while Tomasz Gielo hit two free throws at the other end to put Liberty up three with 23 seconds to go.

Cazmon Hayes then misfired from deep, before Gielo connected on three more free throws to close the scoring.

Liberty, which opened its season last Friday with a win over Division III Randolph College, improved to 2-0 on the young season. Delaware dropped its season opener for the ninth consecutive year.

UD sophomore Cazmon Hayes scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Blue Hens, while freshman Kory Holden produced 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in his impressive Delaware debut. Marvin King-Davis was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points, while Barnett Harris corralled a team-high nine rebounds.

Delaware held a 47-37 rebounding advantage and attempted 14 more shots than Liberty, but the Blue Hens went just 3 of 24 from long range.

Gielo posted a double-double for the Flames with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Joe Retic added 11 points and Andoh chipped in with nine.

The teams were knotted 30-30 at the half, but after falling behind by five, Delaware went back in front 38-37 when Holden found Eric Carter for a dunk. UD was still up a point at 40-39 after a Jeffers basket, but Liberty erupted for a 10-point run to take a 49-40 advantage with 8:57 to play.

Delaware was still down seven a minute later but the Blue Hens responded with a 9-0 spurt of its own, going back in front 53-51 at the 4:49 mark on a Hayes layup. UD was back up two after the putback dunk by Jeffers, but Liberty scored the final eight points of the game to pull out the win.

"When we got down nine I didn't know what to expect, but for our kids to fight back the way they did, we'll be alright," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "We missed some shots at the end, but we got the shots we wanted. We got great looks from deep but they just didn't go in - sometimes that happens. I'm also proud of the way we battled and fought on the offensive glass."

Delaware opened the game with an 8-4 lead as Holden scored six early points, but UD missed its next nine field goal attempts as Liberty used an 8-0 spurt to take a four-point advantage midway through the period.

The Blue Hens responded and led by as many as seven points at 23-16 following a Corbett three-pointer, before the Flames scored four straight points to knot the contest at 27-27. Hayes then drilled a triple with 30 seconds on the clock, before Retic answered from deep for Liberty as the teams went into the break even at 30-30.

"Once the ball went up I just played my game," said Holden, who committed just two turnovers in 32 minutes of action. "We're just going to keep working hard at practice; this is just the beginning."

Delaware returns to action on Friday with a 10 p.m. Eastern game at Cal Poly.

Game Notes:
• Liberty avenged a 77-64 loss to Delaware in Newark on Jan. 1, 2014
• UD dropped to 6-3 all-time vs. Big South opponents
• The Blue Hens opened the season on the road for the fifth straight year
• Delaware played without Kyle Anderson, who will miss the first month of the season with a right hand injury

SUBJECT: Cal Poly Uses Dominant First Half Run To Race Past University of Delaware Men's Basketball, 78-60

DATE: November 21, 2014

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly closed the first half with a dominating run as the Mustangs opened up a huge halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Delaware men's basketball team, 78-60, in non-conference action Friday night at the Mott Athletics Center.

The Mustangs, who improved to 2-1 on the year, led 20-16 at the 7:46 mark of the opening half following three free throws by Blue Hen sophomore guard Cazmon Hayes, but took over from there.

Cal Poly scored the next seven points, and following a Kory Holden three-pointer, went on a 16-0 tear to extend the margin to 43-19 with 1:13 on the clock. Hayes finally ended the spurt with a three-point play, but Ridge Shipley buried a three-pointer and Brian Bennett beat the horn with a jumper to make it a 48-22 margin at the break. From there Delaware only got closer than 20 when Chivarsky Corbett drained a last minute three-pointer to cap the scoring.

Shipley finished with a career-high 21 points for the Mustangs, who shot 18 of 33 (54.5%) during the opening half and knocked down 12 triples for the game. Bennett contributed 12 points for Cal Poly, David Nwaba chipped in with 10, and Maliik Love dished out a game-high eight assists.

Hayes paced Delaware (0-2) for the second straight game with a career-high 22 points, as he knocked down three treys and finished 9 of 10 from the foul line. Holden reached double figures for the second consecutive contest with 12 points, while Corbett added nine on three shots from long range. Barnett Harris grabbed six rebounds as he led UD in boards for the second straight game.

Delaware, playing without junior forward Marvin King-Davis who missed the contest with a recurring hamstring injury, utilized a nine-man rotation that featured five freshmen and four sophomores.

"We ran into a buzzsaw in the first half; they didn't miss many shots and we didn't force them to miss," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "But we learned a lot about our team in the second half. Our intensity was good during the second period, we just need to play with that intensity for 40 minutes. There are a lot of things we need to get better at; we have a bunch of young guys and they need to understand what it takes to succeed."

After shooting just 6 of 25 from the field during the opening 20 minutes, Delaware responded to score 38 second half points as the Blue Hens outscored Cal Poly by eight in the final stanza.

The Mustangs increased the lead to 64-29 six minutes into the period but UD would not quit as the Blue Hens scored nine straight points, culminated by a Devonne Pinkard three-pointer, to close within 26 points with 11:39 left.

Three minutes later Anthony Mosley scored seven consecutive Delaware points, burying a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut the margin to 69-45. However the Blue Hens would never seriously threaten as the Mustangs put the finishing touches on the victory.

Game Notes:
• Delaware fell to 2-7 in games in the state of California
• Cal Poly avenged an 82-72 loss to the Blue Hens in Newark in Jan. 4, 2014
• The game featured two teams that competed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, as Cal Poly captured the Big West Tournament
• Cal Poly held a 41-36 rebounding edge and committed just four turnovers
• The margin was Delaware's worst loss since a 19-point defeat at North Dakota State last December

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Can't Find Shooting Stroke in 70-52 Non-League Setback at CSU Bakersfield

DATE: November 23, 2014

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team connected on just 12 shots from the field on the afternoon as the Blue Hens suffered a 70-52 non-conference setback to CSU Bakersfield Sunday afternoon at the Icardo Center.

Delaware shot just 26.7 percent from the field and hit only five field goals during the second half while dropping to 0-3 on the campaign. Sophomore Devonne Pinkard paced the Blue Hens with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to post his first career double-double while classmate Cazmon Hayes added 12 points, all in the first half.

Kory Holden reached double figures for the third consecutive game by scoring 10 points to go with four assists, while fellow rookie Chivarsky Corbett contributed eight points and six rebounds. Delaware did connect on 21 of 32 free throws but could not overcome its third consecutive shooting performance under 32 percent.

Aly Ahmed posted team-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds for the Roadrunners, who improved to 1-4 on the year. Cortez Conners chipped in with 14 points, while Brent Wrapp dished out a game-best six assists.

The Blue Hens trailed by just six points at the half but went without a field goal for the first eight and a half minutes of the second half and never got within single digits the rest of the way.

The Roadrunners scored the first eight points of the stanza, including six by Ahmed, to go in front 42-28 with 14:46 remaining. A free throw by Anthony Mosley followed by a Maurice Jeffers putback closed the gap to 46-35 with 11:29 to play, but CSUB answered and eventually took a 56-38 lead when Conners buried a three-pointer at the 7:13 mark.

Delaware never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way, while the Roadrunners went up 21 late before Corbett closed the scoring with a triple.

"We've gone through stretches these last two games were the ball is just not going in the basket for us," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "We have to stick with it; it's a long season and our shots will start falling. Our guys will keep working hard and are not going to quit. We were able to hold down Ahmed a little bit, but he's a good player and when he gets a good angle down low he's tough to stop."

The teams were tied 7-7 after the first four minutes and even though Delaware then went nine minutes without a field goal, CSUB wasn't much better as UD closed within 17-14 following a Hayes three-pointer.

Later Ahmed scored inside to give the Runners their largest lead of the half at 29-20, but Pinkard and Hayes each connected from behind the arc on consecutive possessions as the Blue Hens closed within three. However Tyrell Corbin answered with a three-point play for CSUB, and following two Holden free throws, Conners beat the buzzer with a jumper to make it a 34-28 game at the break.

Delaware closes outs its West Coast trip on Tuesday with an 8 p.m. PT game at Stanford that will be televised on the PAC-12 Network.

Game Notes:
• The game was the first ever meeting between Delaware and CSUB
• The contest was also the Blue Hens' first game vs. a WAC school
• UD has opened 0-3 for the first time since the 2007-08 season
• The Roadrunners held a 45-37 rebounding advantage
• UD scored its fewest points since a 64-50 loss at James Madison on Jan. 23, 2013

SUBJECT: Fordham Outlasts Delaware, 49-44, in Tightly Contested Women's Basketball Matchup

DATE: November 25, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - Three players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough for the University of Delaware women's basketball team as Fordham University defeated the Blue Hens, 49-44, Tuesday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Down by three with less than 10 seconds remaining, UD head coach Tina Martin drew up a play to get the ball to sharp-shooting junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) behind the arc. The play began as planned as Green collected the pass, but she was unable to knock down the trey to tie the game.

Fordham came down with the defensive rebound and Delaware was forced to foul and send the Rams to the free throw line. Taryn Durant collected both free throws with five ticks left to go up, 49-44.

UD sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J./Paterson Kennedy) led the Hens (1-3) with 14 points while Green finished with 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Jardine[/B] (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) added 10 points and seven rebounds in 39 minutes of action.

Emily Tapio guided Fordham (3-2) with 18 points, four assists, and four rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin
"We need to continue to get better. Do I feel some encouragement because we took the Atlantic 10 champion down to the wire? Yeah, we played an older team tough, but we want to come up with a W. We continue to improve daily, but we need to keep clawing and fighting to win games like this."

Junior Courtni Green
"Overall, our defense was a lot better and we rebounded better [than at East Carolina Friday]. The goal is to work hard and give it our all and I think we did that, but it's disappointing and tough to come out with the loss."

Sophomore Erika Brown
"We got the shots at the end that were drawn up and that we wanted, but we just didn't hit them. In the end, it came down to making defensive stops, which we didn't do. We played really good defense throughout the game but when we needed to be crisp is when we had some breakdowns."

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Senior Stephanie Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made her first career start and finished with three rebounds, two points, and two blocked shots.
· Erika Brown and Courtni Green have each scored at least 10 points in all four games this season.
· Fordham evens the all-time series with Delaware at 2-2.
· UD's 44 points is the fewest since the Hens defeated Drexel, 40-39, on Feb. 19, 2012.
· The Blue Hens went 8-for-9 (.889) from the free throw line.
· Delaware outrebounded Fordham, 35-30.

By David A. Willauer-Bob Carpenter Center-University of Delaware-Tuesday, December 30, 2014-After an 0-10 record and some tough key losses in the earlier part of the season the University of Delaware registered their first win of the season thus snap an 11 game losing streak as they defeated a very good and solid St. Bonaventure University from Olean, NY by a 82-77 win before a crowd of 2050 looked on.
The Hens trailed 40-38 at the half and outscored the Bonnies 44-37 in the second half as they played good defense even though it was a very hard fought battle at both ends of the court. Kory Holden a freshman from Salisbury, MD scored his career high of 27 points the 4th most by a freshman in school history. Marvin King Davis had 14 points 11 by Kyle Anderson, 12 by Chivarsky Corbett 10 by Cazmon Hayes.
Marvin King Davis UD Basketball Player "We found a way to win and gave everything we got against a good St. Bonaventure squad and had a full squad counting this first this losing streak is frustrating on the game but our win was key to us and you talk after every game losing is depressing even though we are 0-10 or 1-10 we have to think of a better way to play better basketball. "We buckled down learned from our defeats and stayed calm while making our free throws." (St. Bonaventure) They did a good job it felt like a CAA game with a lot of intensity."
Kory Holden career high of 27 points for UD: " I had a cramp after I got hit in the knee with tendenitis and caught the cramp in the back of my leg." The medical staff took me to the trainers room as I was listening to the crowd I wanted to get a win as we were tired of losing a lot of games and lets make our stretch that is what we do each practice and to improvement for our squad is important for us as this is the last game in the 2014 season and we open CAA play on January 3rd vs. Northeastern which builds our confidence up to think of how we can win that contest." I felt this was part of my best game scoring wise yes leadership and taking care of the ball no but those are the tasks I have to do to improve on my game and my teammates that I have kept me up while I look up to them."
Monte Ross Head Men's Basketball Coach at Delaware: "Well tonights game was great one of the things that we told for the team this is a great game for preparation for the rest of the league on our time they are one of the tough games that we seen before we opened up vs. CAA rival Northeastern we are going to break our season up into three the conference the conference play and the conference tournament is the third thing as I told the kids lets go into our season to play better tonight I told them at halftime we have played better and they played 20 minutes and did well If I don't know what I have in the next two months I think it is important got a reward for all their hard work this is just the start of rounding us into shape we have 1 game with our complete roster other then the Temple game other then that we have been hodge podged a little bit we will be fine our toughness was good mental and physically we didn't let our momentum take the game we were down 10 we had good looks even more remarkable about us they went back and fourth and they would go up 9 and we cut it to 7 once when we led we never relinquished the lead I know that we will be OK." " Kory was aggressive as he is your typical pass point guard he is your I want to do in what we need to do point guard I like that much better he controlled the game I am upset when I started he had the bad look of telling me that I have the flu that information could have been better as he could have told me before he is very tough and very nice passes to Marvin King Davis and Marvin caught the ball and went in for the basket finished strong it is just a matter of us staying healthy as we will be fine.
Marcus Posley led the Bonnies with 22 points as this was his 6th game with 20 points. 16 by Dion Wright and 15 by Andell Cumberbatch.

UD record 11 blocks in the game 1 shy of the game record of 12.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Drops CAA Opener to Northeastern, 72-53

DATE:  January 3, 2015

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware's shooting woes made an unwelcome return Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens hit just 31.7 percent of their shots from the field and dropped a 72-53 decision to Northeastern in the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball opener for both teams at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The defending CAA champion Blue Hens (1-11, 0-1 CAA), coming off their first win of the season Tuesday night vs. St. Bonaventure, pulled to within five points of the lead early in the second half but could never get closer and fell to the preseason CAA favorite Huskies.

Sophomore forward Maurice Jeffers led the Blue Hens with 11 points and senior guard Kyle Anderson netted 10 points, but no other Blue Hen managed more than seven points as the Hens matched their lowest scoring output since falling to Delaware State 66-53 back on Dec. 7. Anderson hit two three-pointers for the Hens to tie the UD career record for three-pointers of 228 set by Mike Ames in 2000-04.

Northeastern (9-4, 1-0 CAA), which won its second straight game, got a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds from Scott Eatherton with T.J. Williams adding 12 points and four assists. Dave Walker contributed 10 points while Quincy Ford added eight points and eight rebounds. Eatherton, a preseason first team All-CAA forward, reached double figures in scoring for the 11th time in 13 games this season.

"We weren't our sharp, crisp selves today," said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. "We missed some layups that were very uncharacteristic of us. We didn't get the stops we needed to when we went through some dry spells offensively. The intensity and passion you need to play well in this league is very important, and we didn't have that today."

Delaware had a season-low six turnovers but shot just 19 of 60 from the field (31.7 percent), 4 of 14 (28.6 percent) from beyond the three-point line, and 11 of 20 (55 percent) from the foul line. Northeastern also held a 44-30 advantage on the boards.

The Hens, who entered the game shooting just 36.7 percent from the field for the game but were coming off a 54 percent effort (29 of 54) vs. St. Bonaventure, managed just 8 of 29 shooting (27.6) for the first half and 11 of 31 (35.5) accuracy in the second stanza. Blue Hen freshman Kory Holden, coming off a career-high 27-point effort vs. St. Bonaventure, scored just one point and was 0 for 7 from the field.

Northeastern led for most of the first half and took a 32-22 lead into the break. The Hens used a 7-2 run to open the second half and narrowed the deficit to 34-29 two minutes in but would never get closer. The Huskies answered with a 10-5 run to up the lead to 44-34 and stayed ahead by double digits the rest of the way.

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware had won four straight CAA openers and fell for the first time since the 2009-10 season
• Delaware had defeated Northeastern four straight times, including three times last season on the way to winning the CAA title
• Kyle Anderson has scored in double figures in all five games he has played this season after returning from a broken hand
• Delaware begins a three-game CAA road trip Monday at Hofstra and continuing on to UNCW (Jan. 8) and College of Charleston (Jan. 10)

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Storms Back to Shock William & Mary 84-80 in CAA Classic

DATE:  January 21, 2015

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware stormed back from a 16-point second half deficit and got another big effort down the stretch from freshman guard Kory Holden to knock off William & Mary 84-80 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball classic showdown Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Holden scored 20 of his points 24 points in the second half, dished out a career-high nine assists, connected on 9 of 13 shots from the field, drained 6 of 8 free throws, and committed just one turnover to lead the way. He was one of four Blue Hens in double figures as senior Kyle Anderson scored a season-high 23 points, including 14 in the second half, Cazmon Hayes netted 13 points, and Marvin King-Davis contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Delaware (4-14, 3-4 CAA), which bounced back from a tough 66-62 setback to Drexel Sunday afternoon, scored a season-high 84 points and shot 69 percent from the field in the second stanza, draining 20 of 29 shots. For the game, the Hens shot a season-best 55.9 percent (33 of 59) from the field.

"That was an unbelievable effort to come back against a William & Mary team which I consider to be the best in the league," said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. "Our resolve tonight was tremendous. To fight back, make plays, and make shots was phenomenal. We played good basketball to hold them down defensively and then score the ball. We played confidently and I was happy to see that."

The Hens trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half as the Tribe knocked down 9 of 14 three-point attempts and took a 44-32 lead into the break. The Hens were still down by 16 points at 58-42 with 14:33 left in the second half before mounting the frantic comeback. Delaware scored 13 straight points - including five by Holden - to narrow the gap to 58-55 with 11:39 remaining and finally gained the lead at 70-69 on a Devonne Pinkard layup with 4:28 left.

Delaware later took the lead for good as Anderson knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 73-73 with 3:27 left, Hayes followed with a layup, and Holden converted a three-point play for a 78-73 lead. Holden knocked down four free throws in the final 18 seconds, including two with three seconds left, that iced the win.

"We stayed together, played as a team, got great leadership from Kyle (Anderson) and Marvin (King-Davis), and knocked down our free throws at the end," said Holden. "This win gives us a lot of confidence, we just need to play consistent and keep getting better."

Omar Prewitt hit 6 of 9 three-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Tribe (11-7, 5-2 CAA), who had a three-game win streak snapped. CAA Preseason Player of the Year Marcus Thornton added 15 points - but just five after halftime - and Terry Tarpey contributed 12 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and six assists.

Hen Scratchings:
• Delaware has now won 3 of its last 4 games and improved to 3-5 at home
• The Hens' previous season-highs for points and field goal shooting came in an 82-77 win over St. Bonaventure on Dec. 30 when Delaware shot 53.7 percent from the field

• Delaware ends its three-game home stretch Saturday when the Hens travel to newcomer Elon for a 7 p.m. tip

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Falls to Hofstra Three-Point Barrage in 79-69 Setback

DATE:  February 4, 2015

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware could not catch up to Hofstra's long range barrage Wednesday night as the Pride led from wire-to-wire in a 79-69 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Hofstra (15-9, 6-5 CAA) drained a season-high 13 three-pointers and snapped a three-game losing streak as Ameen Tankersley led the way with 22 points, including five three-pointers, and six rebounds.

Delaware, which pulled to within three points with 7:58 left to play but could never get closer, lost for the third time in the last four outings as Hofstra swept the season series from the Hens for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

The Hens (5-17, 4-7 CAA) did put five scorers in double figures for the second straight game but could never overcome an eight-point deficit as they shot just 29.6 percent from the field (8 of 27) in the opening stanza.

Cazmon Hayes led the Hens with 14 points while Chivarsky Corbett came off the bench to score 13 points and pull seven rebounds, Kyle Anderson contributed 12 points, and Kory Holden and Maurice Jeffers each added 11 points with Jeffers pulling down seven boards.

"Our game plan was to force Hofstra to make contested jump shots, and give them credit because they made them," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "We just weren't sharp offensively tonight, we were off just a beat and not our normal selves. We weren't crisp and were almost in slow motion in the first half, and we can't keep spotting the other team advantages."

Hofstra, which entered the game ranked No. 11 in the nation with 9.1 three-pointers per game, also got 17 points from Juan'ya Green and 14 more from Brian Bernardi. Green, who has scored in double figures in every game this season, hit on 10 of 12 free throws and also had a game-high six assists while Bernardi knocked down four triples.

Delaware cut the Hofstra lead to 38-36 early in the second half when Jeffers scored five straight points and the Blue Hens still were down by only three at 51-48 with 7:58 before the Pride took control with a 9-0 run to go up 60-48. UD never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware shot an impressive 58.3 percent from the field (14 of 24) in the second half
• Hayes scored in double figures for the seventh time in the last eight games
• Hofstra ranks No. 2 in NCAA Division I with eight road victories this season
• The Hens had won two straight at home before the loss
• Hofstra has defeated the Hens four straight times at the BCC

SUBJECT: Cold-Shooting University of Delaware Men's Basketball Falls to James Madison 67-54

DATE:  February 10, 2015

NEWARK, Del. -- Freshman guard Chivarsky Corbett came off the bench to score 17 points, but the University of Delaware could not overcome a cold-shooting night and dropped a 67-54 decision to James Madison in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball matchup Tuesday night.

James Madison (15-11, 8-5 CAA), which won its second straight game and swept the season series from Delaware, held the Hens to 37.8 percent shooting from the field, forced 15 turnovers, and held a 36-30 advantage on the boards to post the win.

Corbett drained 5 of 11 shots from the field, including three three-pointers, and also pulled five rebounds to lead the way for the Hens (6-18, 5-8 CAA), who could not continue the momentum after knocking off then league-leader Northeastern Saturday in Boston.

Kyle Anderson added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Blue Hens but was limited to 3 of 12 shooting from the field and just 2 of 7 accuracy from beyond the mark. He still finished in double figures for the seventh straight game and became just the 19th player in UD history to surpass 1,200 career points.

"We had been scoring the ball well over the last five, six, seven games, but we just couldn't score enough tonight," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "I thought we did a good job defensively holding JMU to 42 percent shooting, but we didn't make enough shots to win. Our inconsistency is a product of our youth. Our kids are trying their tails off, but sometimes things don't come together.

"Our crowd was absolutely tremendous," said Ross of a crowd that included an enthusiastic jam-packed student section. "The student section was loud and packed from the start, and I'm sorry we couldn't get it done for them tonight."

Yohanny Dalembert led James Madison with 14 points and 10 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the season while Joey McLean contributed 13 points and four assists. The Dukes improved to 5-2 in CAA road games this season.

HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware returns to action Saturday when the Hens travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on William & Mary
• Delaware pulled just six offensive rebounds and did not have a second-chance point the entire game
• The Hens did shoot 83.3 percent from the foul line, making 15 of 18 shots, including perfect 6 for 6 shooting from Anderson
• Delaware led 27-21 with 4:41 left in the first quarter but JMU outscored the Hens 11-0 to end the half and scored the first four points of the second stanza to take control.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Overwhelms League-Leader UNCW in Second Half, Cruises to 70-59 Victory

DATE:  February 19, 2015

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware erased a 10-point halftime deficit and held league-leading UNCW to just five second-half field goals en route to a 70-59 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Sophomore guard Cazmon Hayes dropped in 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, Marvin King-Davis added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Kyle Anderson chipped in with 11 points to lead Delaware (8-18, 7-8 CAA) to its second straight victory.

UNCW (15-11, 10-5 CAA), which entered the game in first place in the CAA standings a half-game ahead of William & Mary and Northeastern, had a two-game win streak snapped. Delaware avenged a 74-73 overtime loss at UNCW back on Jan. 8.

Delaware outscored the Seahawks 45-24 in the second half to rally from a 35-25 halftime deficit. UNCW hit just one field goal over the first 14 minutes of the second half and finished the night hitting just 34.5 percent of its shots from the field (19 of 55), including 5 of 24 shooting (20.8 percent) during the second stanza.

"This was a really good win, and I couldn't be prouder of the guys," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "We wanted to make them shoot over us and make contested jumpers. Eric Carter and Anthony Mosley gave us some big minutes off the bench. In conference play we need other guys to step up, and those guys did that tonight."

Craig Ponder led four UNCW players in double figures with 14 points while Dylan Sherwood came off the bench to add 12 points and Freddie Jackson had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Delaware, which shot 65.2 percent from the field (15 of 23) in the second half, has now defeated the CAA leader in three of its last four games. The Hens have also downed UNCW seven straight times at home.

The Hens trailed by 10 at the half and still were down 40-31 two minutes into the second half before embarking on a 17-2 run that gave them a 48-42 lead with 10:57 left.

The Seahawks never got closer than seven points the rest of the evening and when they did, at 60-53 with 4:22 remaining, the Hens responded by scoring seven straight points to put the game away.

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Hayes has now scored in double figures in 9 of the last 11 games for Delaware
• Delaware, which moved to within a half-game of sixth place in the CAA standings, is 4-4 vs. the four league co-leaders this season
• King-Davis hit on 6 of 8 shots from the field and 12 of his 16 points in the second half
• Freshman point guard Anthony Mosley had three points and dished out five assists in 17 minutes of action off the bench. The 17 minutes and five assists were his second highest totals of the season
• Delaware returns to action Saturday when the Hens host Elon at 12:30 p.m. in a game to be televised live by the American Sports Network
