SUBJECT: Women’s Tennis Opens 2017 with 8-1 Victory at Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team opened its 2017 fall season with an 8-1 victory at Stockton on Friday afternoon, playing at the Stockton Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats (1-0) won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 advantage into the singles matches. The Wildcats earned points at 1-5 singles before Stockton (0-1) was able to get on the board at number six singles.

Junior Anushka Sathe and sophomore Andrea Ribalta were the first to finish at number one doubles, winning 8-1 for the first point of the match. Sophomore Begona Gomar and junior Tess Paya also won, 8-1, at number two doubles, before sophomore Laura Gil and freshman Mallory Nolte picked up the sweep, 8-6, at number three doubles.

Gil then carried that momentum into the singles events, getting off the court first for the Wildcats with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number two singles. Gomar wrapped up the team victory with the fifth win of the match, taking number one singles, 6-1 and 6-1.

Ribalta kept the Wildcats on top with a with at number five singles, 6-0 and 6-1, before Tess Paya won her first singles match as a Wildcat, 6-2 and 6-1, at number four.

The Ospreys eanred their lone point at number six singles before Sathe wrapped up the season opener with a 6-0 and 6-4 victory at number three singles.

The Wildcats are set for their home opener with their next match when they host East Region power NYIT at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Tuesday, September 5. The first service is set for 3:00 p.m.

Brookville, N.Y. - - Juniors Anushka Sathe and Tess Paya each earned a point at singles, but Wilmington University dropped the match, 7-2 to host LIU Post University in regional women’s tennis action on Friday afternoon.

The Pioneers (1-0), playing their first match of the season, came away with wins at all three doubles matches. The duo of Laura Gil and Mallory Nolte were the closest to taking a point, losing 8-6 at number three doubles, while the pair of Begona Gomar and Tess Paya fell by a score of 8-4 at number two doubles. Sathe and Andrea Ribalta were the last to finish, but fell at number one doubles by a 8-3 margin.

Paya was the first Wildcat to record a point at singles. Playing at number five, the junior won in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-0. Sathe added the Cats’ other lone point at number three singles. She won the first set, 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-4. In the tiebreaker, she won handily, 10-2 earning the point for the visitors.

Gil nearly gave Wilmington (1-2) a point, as she went the distance at number two singles but dropped the tiebreaking third set by a 10-6 margin. Freshman Nolte put up a good fight for the Cats, but dropped her match at number six singles by identical 6-4 scores.

Wilmington remains in non-conference play for one more match as they host regional power Queens College next Saturday afternoon, September 16th. First serve is set for 3:30 PM at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
 
SUBJECT: Gomar Takes Down Regionally Ranked Player but Wilmington Women’s Tennis Falls, 8-1, to Nationally Ranked Queens

WILMINGTON, Del. - - Sophomore Begona Gomar earned a point at number one singles, but the Wilmington University fell to Oracle/ITA Division II Women’s Nationally ranked No. 41 Queens, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

It was the third team in a row that the Wildcats (1-3) played that was ranked in the final Oracle/ITA Division II East Region Poll, as the Knights were ranked second at year’s end last spring.

Junior Anushka Sathe and sophomore Andrea Ribalta made the East Region’s No. 9 doubles team work hard for their point at number one doubles, as the combo of Reehan Rashad and Laura Ortega Jover came out on top, 8-4, for Queens (5-0).

The highlight of the match came at number one singles, as Gomar took down the East Region’s No. 8 singles player for the Wildcats’ lone point. After dropping the first set, Gomar came back to even the match, 6-4, in the second. Gomar then put Rashed away, 10-7. Gomar was ranked tied for 20th in the final East Region Singles Rankings last spring.

Tess Paya gave everything she had at fifth singles, but fell just short, 4-6 and 4-6. Laura Ortega Jover is also ranked 12th in singles for the Queens, as she took down Sathe at number three singles, 6-0 and 6-1.

Sabrina Blasi-Smith went the distance at number six singles for the Wildcats, but couldn’t find the magic touch in the third set, falling 6-1, 0-6, and 0-6.

The season doesn’t get any easier for the Wildcats, as they now begin Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday afternoon. They host Chestnut Hill in a conference battle at the Delcastle Tennis Center with the first serve slated for 3:00 p.m.
 
SUBJECT: Braunberg’s Triple-Double, Flores’ 31 Digs Lead Wilmington Volleyball to CACC Victory, 3-0, Over Felician

NEWARK, Del. - - After a close first set, the Wilmington University volleyball team was able to take care of Felician, 3-0, for their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory of the season on Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 28-26, 25-13, and 25-14.

The win is the first CACC victory of the season for the Wildcats (5-7, 1-0 CACC), as they snapped a three-match overall losing streak. Felician (1-6, 0-2 CACC) committed 23 errors and hit just .023 in the loss.

The first set as the closest of the three, as Felician grabbed a 13-8 lead with a 6-1 run. Back-to-back kills by Eile Harris brought the Wildcats to within 13-11, before the Wildcats were finally able to tie the set at 19. The teams traded the next three points before the Golden Falcons picked up a block to take a 22-20 lead. But the Wildcats didn’t shy away, using a kill from Jill Braunsberg started a 4-0 run. Another Braunsberg kill gave the Wildcats set point at 24-22.

Felician answered back, however, as an ace and a Paulina Calero kill gave set back to Felician, 25-24. Mandy Behiels served up an ace to give the Wildcats another set point, 26-25, but an attack error retied the game at 26-26. Brittany Ford clipped the back line for a 27-26 lead before Erin Bistany ended the set with a kill, 28-26.

From there it was all Wilmington, as they scored 12 of the first 16 points in the second set to keep the momentum. Behiels capped another 4-0 run with an ace to give the Wildcats an 18-7 lead before the teams traded points back and forth until the Wildcats secured the final two points. Braunsberg put down a kill before Harris and Behiels slammed down a block for the set, 25-13.

Leading 7-6 in the third set, Deja Stanek started a 3-0 run that turned into spurts of 6-1, 10-2, and 14-3 to take a 21-9 advantage. The Golden Falcons scored five of the next six points to get to within 22-14, btut the Wildcats closed out the match with a kill by Jahnya Boschulte and a pair of Felician attack errors, 25-14.

Braunsberg picked up her third triple-double of the season, leading the Wildcats with 12 kills (with a .310 attack percentage), adding 11 assists and 18 digs. Harris, Behiels, and Bistany all chipped in with five kills each. Miranda Shaw spread the offense around with a team high 22 assists.

Addalyn Flores led the back row with an astounding 31 digs, averaging 10.3 digs per set in the victory. Following Braunsberg’s 18, Brittany Ford added nine digs as well. Bistany denied two attacks with solo blocks and one block assist while Stanek finished with one solo block and one block assists. Harris collected four block assists while Ford and Behiels chipped in with two block assists each.

The Wildcats remain at home and in the CACC with their next match, as they host Georgian Court on Friday at the WU Athletics Complex. First service is set for 7:00 p.m.
 
SUBJECT: Wilmington Women’s Tennis Starts CACC Play with 6-3 Victory over Chestnut Hill

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team started its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on the right foot, defeating Chestnut Hill, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Wildcats (2-3, 1-0 CACC), as they began their conference run with a solid victory. The Griffins (0-2, 0-2 CACC) earned wins at number one doubles, number one singles, and number three singles, but it wasn’t enough for the win.

Sophomores Laura Gil and Sabrina Blasi-Smith started the Wildcats off with a win at number three doubles, taking down Julia Bellon and Nicole Yang, 8-2. Begona Gomar and Tess Paya followed suit with an 8-5 victory at number two doubles. The Wildcats weren’t able to complete the doubles sweep as Andrea Ribalta and Anushka Sathe fell at number one.

The Wildcats quickly wrapped up the match in the singles matches, as Ribalta won at number four singles, 6-0 (retired). Blasi-Smith continued her strong play with a 6-0 and 6-0 victory at number six singles for a 4-1 lead. Paya slammed the door on the victory at number five singles, defeating Julia Bella, 6-1 and 6-0, for the Widcats’ fifth point.

Gil continued the Wildcats run with another point at number two singles, winning 6-2 and 6-2. Chestnut Hill was able to grab the final two points of the match, taking the third singles and first singles.

The Wildcats put their dual matches on hold for a week, as they head to the ITA East Regional Tournament in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The beginning of the individual and doubles regional event begins Friday, September 22.
