NEWARK, Del. - - After a road game to start the season, the women’s soccer team was glad to return to the friendly confines of the WU Athletics Complex, where they shut out the visiting Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University by a score of 1-0 and earned their first victory of the 2017 season.

Wilmington (1-1) put the pressure on early to start the game, but were unable to break through as Roberts Wesleyan goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel turned both shots away. For the half, the Wildcats held a 4-1 shot advantage and both sides headed into the locker room scoreless.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Cats finally got on the board as freshman Jessica Unsihuay netted her first collegiate goal. She took a cross from the left corner off the foot of graduate student Preslie Quaranta and bodied it down into the back of the net.

The Redhawks (1-1) best chance to tie the game both came off headers. One was immediately following the Wildcats’ goal, while the other was with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Wilmington keeper, senior Kierstyn Williams handled both easily and preserved the shutout for the hosts.

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - - A second half penalty kick soured the chances of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road victory for the Wilmington University men’s soccer team, as they fell, 2-1, to Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon at Foley Field.

The Wildcats (2-2-2, 2-1 CACC) couldn’t capitalize after the penalty kick in the 67th minute , but nearly squared the match against on multiple occasions. The Bears (5-1, 3-0 CACC), ranked ninth in the lasts United Soccer Coaches East Regional Poll, scored early in the game to put the pressure on the Wildcats.

Just four minutes into the contest, Bloomfield’s Nicholas Calabia squirted free down the right side behind the last line of defense. He set a hard cross into the box, finding the head of teammate Arman Bashiri who redirected it home at the back post for the early 1-0 lead. The Bears had the first three shots and chances in the contest.

The Wildcats’ Daniel Loyo had an opportunity in the 16th minute, but his header off a set play hit the crossbar and stayed out. But the visitors would find their equalizer in the 20th minute.

Following a foul at the top of the box in the penalty area, Ben Jordan stepped in to take the penalty shot. Despite Jordan’s kick being saved, he stayed with the play and easily tapped in his own rebound to tie the game, 1-1, just 19:30 into the game.

The match was tightly contested in the first half, as each team went into the break with five shots in the boxscore.

The Bears took advantage of one of their few opportunities in the second half, as a foul in the right side of the box drew a penalty kick for the home team. Regsan Watkins was able to beat Wilmington goalkeeper Vinny Tasca for his second goal of the season and the 2-1 lead 66 minutes into the match.

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - - Preslie Quaranta’s strike into the upper right hand corner from 15 yards out sent the Wilmington University women’s soccer team to a 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon at Foley Field.

Playing their fourth game in seven days, the Wildcats (4-2-1, 3-0 CACC) pulled out the CACC victory to finish a tough week on top, 3-1. The Bears (1-4, 0-4 CACC) powered back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net in the second half.

The Wildcats started quickly on Saturday, as Loran Wyrough put in her team leading fourth goal of the season in the seventh minute. The Wildcats were at it again in the 13th minute, as Quaranta weaved her way down the right side to the endline. Her low cross found Krysta Memis on the back post all alone, as she one-timed it home for the 2-0 lead just 12:47 into the contest.

But the Bears didn’t back down in the first half, as they capitalized on a pair of Wildcat mistakes to tie the game. Wilmington net minder Kierstyn Williams came out of the box for a 50-50 ball, but her clear went right to the Bears’ Brigid Dwyer on the left side. Dwyer’s one time from 30 yards out beat Williams back to the goal to close the gap to 2-1 in the 25th minute.

Not even a minute and a half later, the Bears had another opportune moment outside the box. Another misclear on the backline allowed the ball to bounce right to Lisa Parello who ripped a shot from 25 yards out and over Williams. The game was knotted, 2-2, 25:26 into the game.

Bloomfield went into the break with a 8-7 shots advantage, putting four of them on frame.
