SOONERS FALL TO NO. 18 IOWA STATE

NORMAN - Oklahoma led at the intermission but eventually fell to No. 18 Iowa State, 22-14, in Big 12 dual action on Sunday afternoon in Norman.

The Sooners (3-6 overall, 1-5 Big 12) went 2-1 in ranked matchups, but a suffered four major decision defeats throughout the day stifling a late comeback attempt. With the win, No. 18 Iowa State (7-3 overall, 4-1 Big 12) earned its first win in Norman since 2015.

"There were some weight classes that I enjoyed watching and I thought their effort was good." head coach Lou Rosselli said after the match. "There were a couple of places that we could've been better though, which is disappointing."

The dual started when OU's Christian Moody suffered a 14-4 defeat at the hands of No. 8 Alex Mackall at 125.

Things got back on track for the Sooners at 133 when No. 15 Anthony Madrigal secured his team-high 10th win over a ranked opponent when he took No. 16 Todd Small down in the final frame to secure a 8-6 decision. With the win, Madrigal joined four other Sooners as wrestlers with seven wins in dual action this season.

The bout at 141 featured the lone top-10 matchup of the night, when No. 7 Dom Demas (OU) and No. 8 Ian Parker (ISU) squared off on the mat. Three periods weren't enough for Demas, as he needed extra time to win his 20th match of the season. As time ticked toward zero on the clock in sudden victory, Demas scored a takedown defeating Parker 6-4.

OU's Jacob Butler faced a tough test at 149, when he met No. 7 Jarrett Degen. Butler would score a couple of escape points, but fell 9-4 to Degen.

The Sooners got back on track at 157 when Justin Thomas pinned Grant Stotts in the second frame to give the Sooners a 12-7 lead at intermission. It was Thomas' third pin of the season, and first since Jan. 5 vs. Ohio's Zac Carson.

After the break, Elijah Joseph took the mat at 165 for the second consecutive week, but fell 11-1 to Iowa State's Chase Straw.

In the last ranked match of the day, No. 10 Anthony Mantanona (OU) suffered a 7-5 defeat in sudden victory. The Sooners were also deducted a team point for loss of bench control, which moved the score to a 14-11 Iowa State advantage heading into the final three bouts.

True freshman Darrien Roberts was up next for the Sooners, as he faced No. 24 Marcus Coleman, dropping a major decision, 14-4.

No. 15 Jake Woodley found the last win of the night for Oklahoma at 197. The Pittsburgh native secured a 7-3 decision over Joel Shapiro, bringing the Sooners within striking distance at 18-14 heading into the day's last match.

The final bout of the day was a heavyweight battle that resulted in Josiah Jones dropping a 14-3 major decision to give the Cyclones a 22-14 victory over the Sooners.

UP NEXT

The Sooners now prepare for a Big 12 dual with Air Force, slated to start at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14 inside McCasland Field House. Tickets for Oklahoma's two remaining home duals can be purchased online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 18 Iowa State wrestling team (7-4, 4-1 Big 12) went into Norman on Sunday afternoon and came away with a 22-14 victory over Oklahoma (3-6, 1-5 Big 12). The Cyclones took six out of the 10 bouts, including major decision wins from Alex Mackall, Chase Straw, Marcus Coleman and Gannon Gremmel.

How It Happened
At 125 pounds, No. 8 Mackall got the dual rolling for the Cardinal and Gold. He squared up with OU's Christian Moody in the opening match. Mackall recorded a 14-4 major decision over the Sooner that included an eight point third period, aided by two takedowns, a two-point nearfall, escape and a point for riding time.

The Cyclones dropped a pair of close decisions at 133 and 141 pounds before No. 7 Jarrett Degen put ISU back on track.

Degen tallied three takedowns, a pair of escapes and added a point for riding time to oust Jacob Butler by 9-4 decision. Oklahoma got a pin at 157 pounds, and the sooners held a 12-7 advantage at the intermission.

Out of the break, Straw recorded the first of four ISU victories in the back-half of the dual. Straw scored on three takedowns, a two-point nearfall, an escape and added a point for riding time in an 11-1 major decision over Elijah Joseph.

The turning point in the dual was the bout at 174 pounds. No. 21 Sam Colbray strapped it up with No. 10 Anthony Mantanona. Colbray struck first, recording the first takedown of the match, and held a 2-1 lead through one period. Mantanona tied the match at 2-2 in the second period, and that's where the score stood heading to the third period.

In the third, Colbray took a 3-2 lead on an escape. He then took Mantanona down, but the Sooner was able to escape to make it 5-3. Mantanona sent the match to sudden victory with a takedown at the buzzer. In the overtime period, Colbray notched the winning takedown, securing a 7-5 victory.

No. 24 Coleman took that momentum into the 184-pound match. He scored on three takedowns, a pair of two-point nearfalls, an escape and riding time to lock in a 12-4 major decision against Darrien Roberts.

No. 12 Gremmel sealed the dual for the Cyclones. He amassed five takedowns and pushed the pace in the final match of the night, forcing three stalling calls against Josiah Johnson. With a point for riding time, Gremmel won by 14-3 major decision over Johnson.

Navy Defeats Duke in Sunday Matinee Dual

February 9, 2020

PITTSBORO, N.C. – Duke wrestling fell to Navy, 39-6, in a Sunday afternoon out-of-conference dual at Northwood High School.

For the second meet in a row the Blue Devils were forced to forfeit at 125 and 141 pounds, dropping 12 quick points in the team score.

Despite the final score though, Duke and Navy gave fans plenty to cheer about during the match. Four of the eight actual matches ended in a decision win with redshirt sophomore Benjamin Anderson nearly taking down No. 7 Tanner Skidgel at 165 pounds.

Anderson's nationally ranked foe saw himself quickly down 2-0 after a two-point takedown by the Pleasant Grove, Utah, native. Skidgel answered with a reversal and a stalling warning point to jump in front 3-2. Anderson tied things up in the second period when he recorded a point following an escape. Unfortunately, Skidgel took the third period thanks to an escape point and a riding time point to push the final score to 5-3.

Wade Unger also had himself a battle at 149 pounds against Navy's Wyatt Long. The two kept things close and with only a minute left Unger found himself down just 6-5 to the junior. One final takedown by Long, however, secured the 8-5 win for the visitors.

Duke is back in action Friday, Feb. 14, when it welcomes Virginia to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a 7 p.m. dual. The match will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra and will have live stats available via TrackWrestling.

SDSU wins third straight dual
2/9/2020 | Wrestling
ATHENS, Ohio - Three of South Dakota State's ranked wrestlers won by technical fall as the Jackrabbits turned in another dominant performance, defeating Ohio University, 28-9, in nonconference dual action Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

With their third road victory in a row, the Jackrabbits improved to 10-5 overall to secure a winning dual season with three matches remaining. Ohio, which dropped a 31-6 decision to Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois earlier in the day, fell to 6-8 in duals.

SDSU raced out to a 9-0 lead through two matches behind a technical fall from Danny Vega and a major decision by Zach Price. Vega, ranked 24th at 125 pounds by FloWrestling, recorded a 20-3 victory over Trevor Giallombardo, while Price scored a 13-2 win over Giovanni DiSabato in the 133-pound matchup.

The Bobcats' lone ranked wrestler in the lineup, No. 18 Skakur Laney, put Ohio on the board with an 11-3 major decision over Clay Carlson in the 141-pound matchup.

The Jackrabbits put the match out of reach with three consecutive victories in the middle weights, starting with a 7-0 decision by ninth-ranked Henry Pohlmeyer. A senior from Johnston, Iowa, Pohlmeyer and Alec Hagan went into the third period of their match scoreless. Pohlmeyer tallied a point on an escape in the opening seconds of the final stanza, then recorded a takedown and four-point near-fall in the closing seconds for the 7-0 victory.

Peyton Smith notched SDSU's third bonus-point victory of the match with a 9-0 major decision over Kade Kowalski in the 157-pound matchup, while Tanner Cook turned up the pressure in the third period of his bout against Nick Vestal for a 7-1 decision at 165 pounds. Cook led 1-0 through two stanzas before taking down Vestal and adding a four-point near-fall.

The Jackrabbits' two other technical falls came in back-to-back matches. At 184 pounds, 17th-ranked Zach Carlson worked from the top in the second period of his bout with Hunter Yeargan, turning a scoreless deadlock into a 16-0 technical fall with a series of four-point near-falls. Carlson's win was his 20th of the season as he also improved to 12-3 in duals.

Tanner Sloan, ranked 18th at 197 pounds, marked his return to the lineup with a 16-1 technical fall over Jake Walker. Sloan missed the last two duals due to injury.

Other winners for the Bobcats were Logan Stanley (174 pounds) and Jordan Earnest (285 pounds).

  • Six different SDSU wrestlers went 2-0 in action this weekend, including Zach Carlson, who won both of his matches by technical fall
  • Carlson's last five dual wins have all been bonus-point victories - two majors and three tech falls - and his 12 dual wins on the season have resulted in 51 team points (four decisions, three majors, three tech falls and two pins)

Steveson Wins 13th Straight, But Gophers Fall to Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY - The University of Minnesota wrestling program fell to the top-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes 35-6 on Saturday night in front of 12,608 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The two individual Maroon and Gold victories came from Owen Webster and Gable Steveson.

Competing at the school his namesake, Dan Gable, made into a dynasty, heavyweight Gable Steveson made his Carver-Hawkeye debut with a 7-5 decision over No.3 Tony Cassioppi.

Steveson won the takedown battle 3-0 and still has not been taken down this season. He improves to 28-0 in duals across his two seasons in Maroon and Gold with 13 straight victories dating back to the 2019 NCAA Championships.

Webster got the dual started at 184-pounds with a 3-2 decision over Cash Wilcke, Iowa’s lone unranked starter on the night. The win gives Webster 20 in his best season in Maroon and Gold.

Kasper McIntosh made his career dual debut at 165-pounds in place of the ill Bailee O’Reilly.

Coming out intermission at 141-pounds, there were three straight bouts within a two-point margin but Iowa came out on top of all three. While the Hawkeyes were favored in all three bouts, the three consecutive losses killed all Gophers momentum to rally.

The dual featured three lead changes but no ties.

Quotable

"We were really tight there in three matches, and in general, against the top-team in the nation. We're still a good team and we can make some noise down to end the season." - Head Coach Brandon Eggum
Next Up

Minnesota closes out the season next Friday as they welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers to Dinkytown. The team will celebrate their graduating seniors during the dual including 2019 All-Americans Mitch Mckee and Devin Skatzka.

Hawkeyes Top Minnesota to Clinch B1G Regular Season Title

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Senior Michael Kemerer put the finishing touches on a Hawkeye route Saturday, pinning No. 9 Devin Skatzka in two minutes, 52 seconds to punctuate top-ranked Iowa’s 35-6 win over No. 13 Minnesota.

Kemerer, ranked No. 1 at 174, led 4-2 in the first period before rolling up a cradle, sending 12,608 fans home happy and clinching Iowa’s first outright Big Ten regular season title since 2015.

It was also the Hawkeyes’ third top-10 win of the evening, and the fifth match that ended in bonus points.

Austin DeSanto and Alex Marinelli both won by technical fall, piling up 17 combined takedowns at 133 and 165. Jacob Warner won by 13-4 major decision at 197, and Spencer Lee won by forfeit at 125.

Max Murin and Pat Lugo added top 10 wins. Murin finished a takedown with 19 seconds left in sudden victory to top No. 4 Mitch McKee, 6-4, at 141 pounds, and Lugo followed suit with a 3-2 win over No. 7 Brayton Lee at 149.

Murin was making his first appearance in four weeks, and wrestled into overtime for the first time in his career.

“I tell myself I don’t want to celebrate until I get my goal at nationals, but it was kind of a big relief,” Murin said. “It felt really good. Awesome team win too.”

The team win was Iowa’s sixth straight in the series, and represented the largest margin of victory against the Gophers since a 44-2 Iowa win in 1992.

“Big win. Onward. Oklahoma State next,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “We got sole possession of first place in the dual meet season for the Big Ten, so we go upstairs, get some t-shirts and hats, take a couple pictures, and get a move on. I don’t say that lightly, I say that because that’s what you do.

“Oklahoma State is a big dual. I don’t know what they’re ranked, but it’s a program that takes their wrestling very seriously. It is an important dual and we have to be ready to go.”

UP NEXT

Iowa hosts No. 10 Oklahoma State on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. (CT). The dual is televised on BTN.

Dual Decided by Bonus Points in Happy Valley

Both teams won five bouts Saturday night at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Four bonus points were the difference between victory and defeat for the No. 6/3 Ohio State wrestling team (10-4, 6-3 B1G) at No. 2/2 Penn State (11-2, 8-1 B1G), dropping the dual 20-16. The 10 bouts were split with five wins going each way, but a streak of three consecutive bonus point garnering performances (165-184 pounds) pushed Penn State on top.

DUAL SCORE SHEET

‘Gas Tank’ Gary Traub did it again, pulling off another come-from-behind triumph in the third period (or later in some cases). Trailing 4-3 and facing a 1:07 riding time deficit, Traub fired off a shot with 27 seconds to go. He snagged a leg and elevated to slam Seth Nevills to the mat. Traub then rode him out for the remainder of the bout, erasing the riding time point in the process, and securing the legitimizing 5-4 decision over the 13th-ranked heavyweight in the country. Thirty-plus pounds separated the two combatants, but it was the smaller Traub’s one-point separation which prevailed. He is now 20-6 overall this season.

Kollin Moore gave way to Traub moments earlier after majoring No. 18 Shakur Rasheed, 14-6, in the 197-pound bout. He registered six takedowns in total, including three in the final period when successfully chasing down the major decision. Moore concludes the regular season at 24-0 with a 75% bonus rate (8 MD, 6 TF, 4 PIN).

Malik Heinselman, Quinn Kinner and Sammy Sasso were Buckeye victors earlier in the dual.

Heinselman started off the night by handing Bryce Meredith a 5-3 loss. Two bouts later, Sasso grinded out a 3-1 sudden victory to get past Jarod Verkleeren. An escape for each wrestler represented the only tallies in regulation before Sasso closed it out with an overtime takedown. Kinner ruined Brady Berge’s return to the lineup, snagging a third-period takedown to notch a 4-3 win over the 2019 NCAA Qualifier.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AMES, Iowa – The No. 19 Iowa State wrestling team (8-4, 5-1 Big 12) racked up the bonus points on Saturday night, defeating West Virginia (3-11, 0-7 Big 12) by a final score of 34-6. The Cyclones won eight matches on the night with four coming by major decision and two by fall.

How It Happened
Junior Jarrett Degen and sophomore Marcus Coleman were the ISU pinners against West Virginia. Degen was an offensive force, scoring on four takedowns, a reversal and six nearfall points before bringing Liam Lusher to his back in 4:19.

The shortest match of the night provided the most excitement. In just 24 seconds, Coleman cradled Jackson Moomau and turned him to his back, bringing all 3,362 Cyclone fans in attendance to their feet.

Juniors Todd Small, Ian Parker, Sam Colbray and Gannon Gremmel all secured major decision victories in Iowa State's route of West Virginia.

Small took on WVU's Lucas Seibert at 133 pounds. The Suwanee, Ga., native got out to a fast start, tallying three first-period takedowns. He would go on to add three more in the second and third periods and racked up a total of 2:52 of riding time in a 15-7 victory over Seibert.

At 141 pounds, Parker advanced to 11-1 in dual action this season, earning his fifth major decision victory of the year. It was a workman-like match for Parker, taking Caleb Rea down three times and riding the Mountaineer for 2:34 to win it 8-0.

The 174-pound bout featured Colbray vs. WVU's Scott Joll. Colbray's high-powered attack was on display. The junior amassed six total takedowns in the match. He took control of the match with a four-point nearfall to close out the second period. In the end it was Colbray over Joll, 18-7.

Gremmel closed out the match for ISU in style. He scored on three takedowns, a pair of two-point nearfalls, an escape and riding time to best Sean Mullican by 12-1 major decision.

At 165 pounds, Chase Straw gutted out a 4-1 victory over nationally-ranked Nick Kiussis. Straw took Kiussis down in the first period, which proved to be the difference in the contest.

Freshman Corey Cabanban made his Hilton Coliseum debut tonight. The Aiea, Hi., won by 9-5 decision over Joey Thomas. Cabanban tallied three takedowns in the contest.

Next Up
Iowa State has a quick turnaround as it's set to host No. 19 UNI in Hilton Coliseum tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early because the Cyclones will be recognizing Dan Eslick, Chase Straw, Hank Swalla and Joe Teague prior to the dual for Senior Day. The contest between ISU and UNI will be on Cyclones.TV and FloWrestling.
