This is the same defense which recorded nine shutouts and 14 games in which the squad did not permit more than one goal.

Goldey-Beacom’s Chahin Aghrim, Suhail Bismilla and Cameron Wilkinson Named CoSIDA Academic All-America

In an unparalleled year of awards for any team in school history, Goldey-Beacom College’s men’s soccer team saw junior Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) picked first team CoSIDA Academic All-America with junior Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) and senior Cameron Wilkinson (Terrigal, Australia) each tabbed third team.

The awarding of these three brings the total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americas in school history to five – all within the last 2 1/2 years – with Aghrim the first to gain first-team honors. They join Patrick McRae from golf in 2015 and Nina Sengl from women’s tennis last spring, both of whom were picked third team in the at-large category.

The five total honorees ranks sixth among the 14 schools in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. GBC trails only Felician (13), Caldwell (9), Jefferson (9), Post (6) and Wilmington (6).

Aghrim’s honor comes days after being just the second student-athlete in school history picked All-America and the first to be tabbed first team, earning the honor from the Conference Commissioner’s Association. He joins Michael Tobiason, a GBC Athletics and CACC Hall of Fame inductee who was named Honorable Mention in 2006 by the Golf Coaches Association of American.

Aghrim the last three seasons at midfield has made himself one of the most dangerous players on the field and one who opponents immediately have to keep their eyes on. His quickness, ability to beat players in one-on-one situations, passing ability and scoring touch make him a threat at any point.

His awards have been plentiful. Aghrim this season was picked first team All-CACC and CoSIDA Academic All-District, both for a second straight year in addition to being tabbed CCA first team all-region.

Among his many athletic accomplishments, Aghrim is first in the nation with 15 assists. That total places him tied for the school’s single-season record with Matt DiGiacobbe, who established the mark in 2003.

Aghrim also ended sixth in the country with 0.65 assists per game, eighth with 37 points, third in the conference with 11 goals and recorded a point in 15 contests. A creative player in many facets, Aghrim enters his senior campaign third in school history with 24 assists, fifth with 58 points and sixth with 17 goals.

Bismilla this year was named CACC Goalkeeper of the Year for the first time and first team All-CACC a second year. A vocal leader and incredible spark plug for all of his teammates, Bismilla closed ninth in the country with 1,951 minutes, tied for 26th with seven shutouts, 17th with 91 saves, 40th with a .798 save percentage and 55th with a 1.06 goals against average.

Picked CoSIDA Academic All-District this year as well, Bismilla also has a school-record 12 career shutouts and is fourth with 222 saves.

Bismillathis season also was tabbed October’s CACC Student-Athlete of the Month and the league’s Top XVI Award winner for having the highest grade-point average among the student-athletes participating at the finals of each site for the CACC championships.

Part of the Student-Athlete of the Month award includes community service and Bismilla certainly has had a hand in that. He helped the men’s team assist others during Moving Day just before the first day of classes. He also assisted at Tender Hearts, helping raise money to purchase custom-made bicycles for physically and developmentally impaired children. The Lightning's soccer teams also played a big part in helping assist with arts and crafts stations, touch football, soccer, fitness competitions, food trucks and many other activities.

Wilkinson continued to be an extremely valuable defender who always is around the ball and is one of the best leaders on any team at the College. He is a key figure for a defense which allowed just 25 goals this season, recorded nine shutouts and 14 games in which it did not permit more than one goal.

Wilkinson this season was picked CoSIDA Academic All-District for a second straight year and to the CACC Fall Academic Honor Roll a third consecutive season.

Goldey-Beacom (17-5-1, 9-2-1 CACC) this season captured its second CACC title and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The squad upended 10th-ranked Merrimack in first round, becoming the College’s first male team to win a head-to-head NCAA Tournament game.

GBC also led the country with 65 goals and 180 points, broke the school record for most victories overall and in conference and played on a national stage for the first time since competing in the 2002 NAIA National Tournament. The Lightning also had a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) and a four-game shutout streak that both are school records.

There were others on the squad who this season received awards. Senior defender Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) was named first team all-league and second team CCA All-Region, senior midfielder Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) was picked first team all-league and freshman midfielder Nicholas Ladeira (Johannesburg, South Africa) was named the CACC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
