High School Recruiting

Seems like they have a good system of mandating that students stay within their traditional feeders. It would be interesting to see what the athletic programs in Delaware would look like, if students had to stay in their traditional feeders and there was no school choice programs.

I believe we are at a point now in Delaware that coaches really don't have to recruit anymore. Do some of them still do it, absolutely, but only those who feel as though they need to. Kids are now attracted to certain programs because of their athletic success. Also, players are now recruiting their friends to join them. A high school coach doesn't have to recruit when his programs success and players are doing it for him. I'm not really sure, but would this still be considered recruiting?

Interesting take about the players A.I. With all of the social media today, all of the players now know each other and form friendships. I remember that there was a group of 8 - 10 kids that my son played football with that got together and planned to go Hodgson. Most of them would have gone to Glasgow had they not come up with that plan. Then for Blue/Gold most of the Blue players were involved in an ongoing group message as soon as the teams were announced. They got together for workouts and just to hang out and get to know each other. So I agree that the players have a lot of influence on other players. Wonder if DIAA has any opinion about that?

Nuk the rule is this.. as long as the contact is not at the bequest of a school employee or booster than its fine.. and it only pertains to those kids in High School already. although it is is not permissible for a high school kid to persuade a middle school kid to come for "athletic purpose".. if all the kids are not in HS and decide to go to the same school thats fine as long as it wasn't persuaded by anyone who is a HS employee or booster or current HS student

10.2 Illegal Contact with Students, Student’s parent(s), legal guardians, or a Relative Caregiver

10.2.1 A school employee or Board approved volunteer may not initiate contact or request that a booster club member, alumnus, or player initiate contact with a student enrolled in another school or his/her parent(s), legal guardian(s) or a Relative Caregiver in order to persuade the student to enroll in a particular school for athletic purposes. Illegal contact shall include, but not be limited to, letters, questionnaires or brochures, telephone calls, and home visits or personal contact at athletic contests.

Forgetting all the wording and legal mumbo jumbo.. the burden of proving any choice was "for athletic purpose" is pretty much impossible to to prove baring a parent or player whistle blowing. A kid simply being good at a sport is not poof but more of a coincidence..as far as proof is concerned..Anytime a good player chooses a school there will all way be cries of recruiting but there is no way to prove why they chose the school... it could simply be because they liked it better for whatever reason they have..

rr2 I was really just thinking out loud as I know DIAA is so far behind the times. I never thought of recruiting in the terms that A.I. described. With all the social media, I'm sure players try to talk other players into going to their school. I don't think of it so much as recruiting but more school pride. Just a different view that made me think. I would bet that DIAA was too busy trying to figure out a way to limit practices and off-season workout to ever consider what we are talking about...
