After six hard weeks of training at Dover, CR, and Laurel the Super 302 Wrestling Club made their debut at the Nuway Summer Nationals Wrestling tournament in New Jersey over on July 29. Thirty wrestlers representing Dover, CR, Laurel, Delmar, and Lake Forest were coached by Jesse Glanden, Dan Rigby, Aaron Harris, and Hopeton Stewart. This two-day event consisted of a dual meet tournament involving 30 teams on Friday followed by an individual high school and middle school tournament on Saturday. Teams from NJ, PA, MD, VA, SC, MI, MN, CT, and DE were featured along with several individual wrestlers from all over the country. Many of the wrestlers who participated are nationally ranked athletes, which provided a great opportunity for The Super 302 Wrestling Club to compete with the very best in the country.

The dual meet tournament began with The Super 302 Wrestling Club squaring-off against Shore Thing from NJ. Patrick Wisniewski, an incoming freshman at CR, started things off right for Super 302 with a major decision his opponent. Shore Thing came back with two consecutive wins followed by Cameron Hayes and Jackson Dean taking two of the next three matches by major decision and tech fall. At 138 and 145 Anthony Fisher and Divine Watkins rattled off two tough fought victories giving Super 302 a 19-13 lead. Shore Thing answered the bell with three straight pins; however, Super 302 closed the gap with victory by Mike Handy of Laurel. Entering the heavyweight showdown, Jordan Springer needed a pin. After an electric 4 minutes and 12 seconds, Springer pulled out the pin to tie the match 31-31. The Super 302 Wrestling Club earned a criteria victory. Next, Super 302 faced Camden Catholic team of NJ. Camden Catholic was victorious with a 48-19 win. Camron Hayes, Jackson Dean, Anthony Fisher, and Jordan Springer were able to earn victories during the meet.

The Super 302 Club qualified to compete in the silver bracket. In the first round, The Super 302 faced Team Gonzo from Connecticut. They lost a close match, but managed to turn a lot of heads: spectators, coaches, and other club teams alike. Daimere Wilson-Turner (Dover) and Khashad Gillespie (Laurel) managed to win two of the last three matches putting Super 302 to within 6 points of Team Gonzo. In the final match of the day, Super 302 faced The Michigan Pitbull’s Gold. This match came down to a battle of attrition as both clubs’ wrestlers limped onto the mat. Super 302’s team depth and toughness played a large role in its 44-21 victory against Michigan team. The Super 302 Wrestling Club earned a 15th place finish out of 30 of the best teams on the East Coast and surrounding states. While our goal is always to finish number one, we couldn’t be prouder of our team’s effort and results! The next day all thirty wrestlers from Super 302 battled in the Nuway Summer Nationals wrestling tournament. All results are posted on track wrestling; however, some of the individual and dual tournament highlights should be mentioned:

· Patrick Wisniewski proved he belongs finishing fourth in his division and often wrestling up in weight for his club during the dual tournament.

· Cameron Hayes went 7-1 on the weekend and took second place in perhaps one of the deepest weight classes in the tournament.

· Tykwan Joyner earned an impressive second place finish in the individual tournament beating some very tough competition.

· Jackson Dean, the most anticipated eighth-grade phenom in recent memory, didn’t disappoint. He went 3-1 in the dual meet tournament while battling through a nasty illness. This kid is a rare talent who is already making Delaware wrestling proud!

· Anthony Fisher also finished second battling through an early injury on day one: showing toughness and grit along the way.

· Delmar should be proud of Isaac O’Neil. After losing a tough 0-2 bout against the number one seed and eventual finalist, he beat a tough wrestler from CT to advance in the tournament.

· Divine Watkins was maybe the surprise of the tournament. He beat some very tough kids in tight scoring matches. This kid showed an unbelievable will to win and was rewarded with a fourth place finish.

· Isiah Fosque managed to grind out a very impressive win against a tough Apex Club Wrestler, while Austin Venables earned a first period pin before falling to the eventual tournament champion.

Many other wrestlers earned victories during the dual meet, individual tournament, and exhibition matches. Those wrestlers included Anthony Glass, Jeremiah Banks, Tynik Sanders, Taqee Williams, Gabe Evans, Azim Opare, David Elliott, Gabe Degraffenreed, Roman Henriquez, Ben Brumbly, Bobby Stevens, Sam Kowalchick, and Ben Anderson.

The greatest highlight of this whole event is how quickly the Delaware wrestling community rallied together to send these kids on an unforgettable overnight trip to compete against the nation’s best while having a lot of fun along the way. In fact, the team members are already asking to return next summer!
