Widener Football to Have Games Broadcasted on ESPN Radio

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2016) – Widener University Director of Athletics Jack Shafer and JAKIB Media Sports, the multimedia company based in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, have announced an agreement with The New ESPN Sports Station in Philadelphia, 610 Sports, to serve as the flagship for the Widener JM Sports Radio Network beginning this fall.

The station, part of Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc. will carry all Widener football game broadcasts on the radio station and/or the radio station stream, (www.610amsports.com) which includes both home and away contests, during the 2016 season. The station is already the flagship home for Villanova Athletics and any game time conflicts will mean Widener games will follow Villanova and may also air on one of Beasley's other Radio Station properties within their network.

"Our new association with 610 Sports – ESPN Radio is a partnership that will prove to be invaluable to Widener football," stated Shafer. "ESPN Radio 610 allows us to have our football games on a sports-radio format that will provide a great fit for our listeners. We feel this offers a comprehensive listening package for our fans in the Delaware Valley and nationally."

Joe Krause, President of JAKIB Media Sports, also expressed pleasure with the new agreement.

"We are very excited to be the radio broadcast partner of Widener football," Krause said. "The passion of the 610 Sports – ESPN Sports Talk station mirrors that of the Widener football program."

Widener head football coach Mike Kelly is also pleased about the partnership.

"We are thrilled about our new partnership with 610 Sports – ESPN Radio and feel this association will help create an even greater interest for the Widener football program," added Kelly. "610 Sports – ESPN Radio is a great station with outstanding national programming, a big signal and we are excited to have a partnership with this station."

Widener has one of the most storied NCAA Division III football programs in the country. The program has won two national championships, 20 Middle Atlantic Conference titles and has made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Pride have continued to flourish in recent years under Kelly, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons in 2014 while posting a combined 18-5 record since he took over as the pilot of the program.

The football broadcasts will also be available outside the Philadelphia listening area. Alums and other fans from a greater distance can download the Tune-In Radio App for free and listen to the broadcast from wherever they reside. In addition, the broadcasts can be listened to through www.widenerpride.com.

The first broadcast is slated for this weekend when the Pride host Rowan for the second straight year on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1:00 p.m. Go to www.610amsports.com for broadcast details.

Volleyball Opens 2016 Campaign With Two Victories at Rowan Invite

GLASSBORO, N.J. (Sept. 2, 2016) – Senior captain Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) registered a pair of double-double performances as the Widener University volleyball team earned a pair of victories over host Rowan and Emmanuel on Friday evening at the Rowan Invitational. The Pride swept the Profs by set scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21 before earning a 3-1 win over the Saints by scores of 25-13, 22-25, 25-14 and 25-16.

Widener 3, Rowan 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21)

In the season opener against the Profs, Widener trailed for most of the first set and found itself in a 20-14 hole. The Pride, however, went on a 10-2 run and took its first lead at 23-22 on a solo block by junior Lauren Daly (Springfield, Pa.) before getting two more points to clinch the frame on Rowan miscues.

Widener once again found itself in an early hole in the second set before taking a 9-8 lead on a Barbieri service ace and holding off the hosts the rest of the way. Daly came up with another huge solo block on set point to put the Pride in control.

In the third set, the teams exchanged the lead six times and found themselves tied on 10 occasions during a seesaw affair. Rowan closed the gap to 22-21 on a kill from Erica O’Hagan, but the Pride closed the match by scoring the next three points. Barbieri set up sophomores Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) and Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) for kills, and senior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) recorded an ace on match point to seal the win.

Widener was led by a pair of double-double efforts coming from Barbieri and Dorman. Barbieri had 26 assists and 10 digs to go along with a team-leading three aces, while Dorman finished with 12 kills and 10 digs.

Widener 3, Emmanuel 1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-14, 25-16)

Widener never trailed in the opening set against Emmanuel and set the tone early by bursting out to an 11-4 lead, prompting the opponent to take a timeout. The Pride remained in control after the break and built their lead up to as many as 11 when Barbieri set up Dorman for a kill to make it 23-12. Kelsey Lee then added a kill and an ace for the final two points to clinch the set.

After dropping the second frame, Widener came out strong in the third to regain control. The Pride scored the first four points and ballooned the deficit to twin figures when Forney smashed a Barbieri pass for a kill to give Widener an 18-8 advantage. A pair of attacking errors by Emmanuel’s Mary Shelow later gave the Pride the final scoring they needed to win the set.

Widener came out strong again in the fourth frame and rattled off five straight, which was capped by Kalinock and Forney teaming up for a block on an attack attempt by Marissa Cataldo. Nicole Dorman then smashed two straight kills to make it 9-1, providing more than enough insurance for the squad to eventually record its second win in as many tries to begin the 2016 campaign.

The Pride, who forced the opponent to hit at a negative clip during the third and fourth sets, were led by Barbieri’s double-double performance of 40 assists and 10 digs as well as freshman Kierston Forney’s career-high 14 kills. Dorman added 13 kills, and Kelsey Lee finished with a .417 hitting percentage by recording six kills against just one error on 12 attempts.

Widener (2-0) concludes tournament play tomorrow with matchups against Muhlenberg at 1:00 p.m. and Swarthmore at 3:00 p.m.

Widener Football Drops Season Opener to Rowan

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2016) – The Widener University football team dropped its season opener to Rowan by a 19-14 score on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

Rowan improved to 1-0 by defeating the Pride on the road for the second straight season, while Widener fell to 0-1 out of the gates.

After the Profs got on the scoreboard first courtesy of a Tyler Knighton field goal, Widener had an answer and took its first lead near the end of first quarter. Starting from their own 20, the Pride marched all the way to paydirt on five plays by most notably having senior quarterback Alex Krivda (Sellersville, Pa.) and junior wide receiver Montrell Hicks-Taylor (Newark, Del.) connecting for a combined 77 yards in the air on three snaps. The wide receiver most notably caught a 19-yard pass for the team’s first touchdown of the season at the 1:45 mark.

Widener scored another touchdown to seize control before halftime by successfully executing another 80-yard drive following a Rowan punt. Hicks-Taylor provided the scoring again on a 35-yard rush to give the hosts a 14-3 advantage heading into recess.

The second half, however, belonged to Rowan as the visitors blocked a punt and intercepted the ball three times while not allowing Widener to score over the final 30 minutes of play. The Profs scored consecutive touchdowns when Dante Pinckney connected with Kevin Lenart for a 61-yard reception to close the gap to 14-10 with 7:05 left in the third before finding Zac Frantz for a 21-yard strike on the first play of the fourth quarter to push the visitors ahead.

Despite trailing 19-14 with 3:36 remaining in regulation, Widener had two more opportunities to score a touchdown and regain the lead. Rowan, however, forced two turnovers by stopping Hicks-Taylor a yard short of the chains on a 4th-and-2 situation and intercepting a Krivda pass with 29 seconds to go. Pinckney then took a knee to end the game.

Widener was led offensively by Hicks-Taylor, who finished the game with 108 yards receiving on six catches and an additional 48 yards on the ground while also reaching paydirt twice. His receiving and rushing marks were also team highs. Krivda completed 27 of his 54 pass attempts for 255 yards and one touchdown. Senior captain Steve Gozur (Hatfield, Pa.) made eight tackles, including three for a loss, as well as one sack.

Pinckney ended the contest with 265 yards in the air by completing 17 passes for Rowan. He also threw two touchdowns. Jamel Smith made eight catches for 90 yards, while Frantz and Lenart combined for seven receptions and 139 yards and providing scoring. Defensively, the Profs intercepted five passes with two of them falling into the hands of Shaquille Lee. One of Lee’s picks led to a Rowan touchdown.

Widener will take the next weekend off and will return to action when it travels to FDU-Florham on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Pratzner’s Late Goal Leads Widener Men’s Soccer Past Neumann

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2016) – Sophomore Dylan Pratzner (Wallingford, Pa.) found the back of the net in the waning minutes of regulation to lift the Widener University men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Neumann on Saturday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

Both teams had numerous opportunities to score throughout the match until Pratzner came through in the 81st minute. After nearly heading the ball home at the midway point of the second half, the sophomore capitalized on his next chance by finishing a cross from freshman CJ Ciarrocca (Bordentown, N.J.) to give the Pride the lead.

Neumann (0-2) nearly netted the equalizer a minute later when Abu Donzo took a through ball and only had senior goalkeeper David Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) standing in his way. Widener’s netminder, however, made a key save by coming out and disrupting the play. The veteran’s stop proved to be a difference maker and allowed the hosts to eventually escape with their first win of the season.

Sousa picked up his 12th career shutout by making seven saves for Widener, while Neumann’s Shane Smith was tagged with the loss despite redirecting nine shots.

Widener (1-1) continues its four-game homestand to start the season when it entertains Swarthmore on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Widener Volleyball Falls Twice at Rowan Invitational

GLASSBORO, N.J. (Sept. 3, 2016) – The Widener University volleyball team dropped both of its matches at the Rowan Invitational on Saturday afternoon and finished tournament play with a 2-2 ledger.

Muhlenberg 3, Widener 0 (19-25, 14-25, 20-25)

Early in the day, Muhlenberg defeated the Pride by set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-20. Kierston Forney, who was coming off a career outing against Emmanuel, registered a team-leading 10 kills to lead Widener offensively. Senior Sabrina Barbieri contributed 20 assists, while classmates Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) and Brooke Rudtitys (Upper Chichester, Pa.) added 14 and 10 digs, respectively to pace the Pride on the defensive end.

Swarthmore 3, Widener 0 (22-25, 25-27, 18-25)

Swarthmore also proved to be too much for the Pride later in the afternoon, winning by set scores of 25-22, 27-25 and 25-18. Sophomore Nicole Dorman had 12 kills against only two errors on 31 swings, which was good for a .323 hitting percentage, and Barbieri fell just shy of a double-double with 25 assists and eight digs. Elliott posted a season-high 21 digs, while sophomore Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) had four block assists. Freshman Caroline Dangel (Eldersburg, Md.) reached double-digit digs for the first time by contributing 10.

Widener (2-2), which earned victories over Rowan and Emmanuel last night, next visits Lebanon Valley for its conference opener on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Widener Women’s Soccer Edges F&M on Hafer’s First Career Goal

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 6, 2016) – Freshman Rachel Hafer (Reading, Pa.) scored her first collegiate goal to help lead the Widener University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

After receiving a pass from classmate Lexi Slusher (Pennsville, N.J.) inside the box, Hafer found herself in a primary position to score with only the Diplomat goalkeeper to beat. Shannon Johnson-Finn saved an initial attempt fired by Hafer, but the Widener freshman collected her own rebound and was able to finish on the open net to give the hosts the lead in the 31st minute.

Franklin & Marshall (1-2) came out with a vengeance in the second half and outshot Widener by a 10-2 margin in the final 45 minutes of play. The Pride defense being anchored by sophomores Brooke Palmieri (Erial, N.J.) and Shea Scannell (Linwood, N.J.), however, held its ground. Reanna Leoni had a good look she fired high due to being disrupted by a Widener defender in the 74th minute, while Emily O’Hara, Hannah Robertson and Leoni all had shots blocked by the Pride’s back line. The ball was eventually cleared away in the waning seconds, allowing the hosts to survive and escape with their second one-goal win of the season.

Freshman Jenna Keating (Havertown, Pa.) made five saves to earn her first collegiate shutout for Widener, which avenged last season’s overtime loss to the Diplomats in Lancaster. Johnson-Finn was charged with the loss for surrendering the goal before being relieved by Nicole Savidge immediately following the decisive play.

Widener (2-1) will conclude a four-game homestand when it hosts Washington College of the Centennial Conference on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2:30 p.m.

Widener Athletics Announces Second Hall of Fame Class

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2016) – Seven exemplary former student-athletes and one of the University’s most successful coaches will be inducted into the Widener Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 14 during Homecoming Weekend.

The second class to enter the Widener Athletics Hall of Fame consists of Tom Deery (football), Joe Fields ‘75 (football), Jack Klotz ‘56 (football, basketball, track & field), Maureen McGinn Kee ’82 (basketball), Wally Rice (basketball), coach C. Alan Rowe (basketball), Debbie Smuda Williams ’92 (track & field) and Richie Weaver (football, track & field).

Widener Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2016

Tom Deery excelled as a defensive back and kick returner during the football team’s glory years. He was a three-time All-American who helped lead Widener to a 42-3 record over four seasons as well as the program’s second national championship in 1981. Deery sparked many comebacks with key interceptions and long kick returns and still holds school records for career interceptions (24), career punt return yards (1,007), career interception return yards (293) and longest kickoff return (100). He was selected by the Baltimore Colts in the 10th round of the 1982 NFL Draft and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998.

Joe Fields ’75 enjoyed a solid three-year career at the center position, leading Widener to a 24-3 record and helping lay the foundation for future championship teams. Thanks in large part to Fields, the 1973 team led the country in rushing offense even though he played three games with a broken toe. Regarded by many to be the conference’s premier center at the time, Fields was selected by the New York Jets in the 14th round of the NFL Draft. He played with the Jets from 1975-87 and was an all-pro selection four times and a team captain for nine years before concluding his career with the neighboring New York Giants in 1988. For his efforts, Fields was later selected to the Jets’ all-time team in 1990.

One of the school’s top offensive tackles, Jack Klotz ’56 helped the 1954 football team register a perfect 7-0 record to complete the program’s first undefeated season since 1888. His blocking also helped the team average 23.7 points per game that year. Klotz, who earned a combined 12 letters in football, basketball and track & field, was later drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 18th round. He went on to play in the AFL for the New York Titans from 1960-62, the New York Jets from 1963-64 and the Houston Oilers in 1965.

Maureen McGinn Kee ’82 helped put the women’s basketball program on the map during her four-year career at Widener. She remains the all-time leading scorer with 1,935 points while also being named an all-league player every season she played. In addition, McGinn helped the program reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 1982 and claim two consecutive division titles. McGinn, who was a two-time Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division MVP, started every game of her career and was the team’s leading scorer all four years. She currently resides in Drexel Hill with her husband, Bob, and their four children.

By compiling 536 wins from 1965-1998, men’s basketball pilot C. Alan Rowe (1931-2015) was the winningest coach in school history in any sport at the time of his retirement. He led Widener to the NCAA championship game in 1978, a second Final Four appearance in 1985 and 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Rowe also mentored eight players who were named All-Americans as well as 17 who reached the 1,000-point milestone. Widener won the Middle Atlantic Region of the NCAA Tournament three times and was also among the nation’s elite in points allowed by effectively utilizing a 1-3-1 zone defense. In addition, the Pioneers led the nation in scoring defense in 1978, 1986 and 1987. For his achievements, he has also been inducted into the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame, Delco Athletes Hall of Fame Club, Philadelphia Area Small College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. Rowe, who is a graduate of La Salle High School and Villanova University, was married to Gail Watts and had two sons and two daughters.

Debbie Smuda Williams ’92 is one of the most decorated female track & field athletes in school history. She was an All-American in the indoor triple jump in 1991 and 1993 as well as the outdoor triple jump in 1993. Smuda was also a CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team selection in 1992 and a second team pick a year later, becoming the first student-athlete in any sport at Widener to be recognized more than once. She graduated first in school history in the 400-meter dash (indoor and outdoor), long jump (indoor and outdoor) and triple jump (indoor and outdoor) and her indoor standard of 37-feet, 5.25-inches established at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships is the longest-standing school record in the program annals. Smuda, who earned her bachelor’s degree in three years and received her master’s during her fourth year of eligibility at Widener, is also a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Century Team. She currently lives outside of Boston with her husband, Tom, who graduated from Widener in 1993 and was a four-year member of the men’s track & field team as a hurdler, and three daughters, Emily (11), Natalie (9) and Madeleine (9).

A multi-sport athlete at the university, Richie Weaver excelled as a hurdler on the track and a running back on the football field and earned numerous accolades for his prowess in each sport. In track & field, Weaver was a two-time All-American and most notably the national champion in the 440-meter intermediate hurdles in 1970. On the gridiron, he graduated with 10 Middle Atlantic Conference records and 10 school records. Weaver was named an All-American in 1971 after setting a single-season program standard at the time with 1,267 yards on the ground and ended his career with 2,604 rushing yards, which was also a record when he graduated. In addition, his 363-yard rushing performance against Moravian on Nov. 7, 1970 are still MAC and ECAC single-game records to this day.

Wally Rice began his collegiate career as an unheralded basketball player out of Philadelphia and turned out to be one of the building blocks for the men’s basketball program which would eventually become a national powerhouse under the direction of C. Alan Rowe. With freshmen ineligible to compete on the varsity stage at the time, he first spearheaded a team which completed its season undefeated at 20-0. Rice then joined C. Alan Rowe’s varsity team as a sophomore and earned all-conference and all-small college first team laurels in each of his three seasons. He was also most notably named the program’s first All-American as well as the conference player of the year as a senior after leading the program to its first NCAA Tournament berth in what was then known as the College Division. Rice, who was drafted by the NBA’s Boston Celtics and ABA’s Indiana Pacers, exited as the school’s all-time scoring leader at the time with 1,493 points in only three varsity seasons and was among a league-best eight former Widener players who were named to the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Century Team. He then pursued a career in retail management after college and raised five wonderful children, including one which graduated from Widener in 2009.

Widener Field Hockey Blanks Drew; Herr Scores Twice

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2016) – Junior captain Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) found the back of the net twice for the first time in her collegiate career to lead the Widener University field hockey team to a 2-0 win over Drew on Wednesday evening at Edith R. Dixon Field.

After a penalty stroke clanked off the post early in the opening half, Herr put the Pride on the board in the 21st minute off a penalty corner when she finished a pass from sophomore Sarah Quintus (Drexel Hill, Pa.). The junior then doubled the lead shortly after by sending another rocket to the back of the cage after receiving a cross from freshman Sam Scoma (Blue Bell, Pa.) just 6:42 later to give the Pride the insurance they needed to earn their second win of the young season.

Senior Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) earned her first shutout of the fall and fifth of her career for Widener, which outshot its opponent by a lopsided margin of 25-3 and had a commanding 22-5 advantage in penalty corners. She only had to make one save. Drew’s Ryan Callaghan suffered the loss despite turning away seven shots, while Michele Pozyc recorded a defensive save.

Widener (2-1) continues non-conference action when it visits Neumann on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

Men’s Soccer Falls Short Against Swarthmore

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2016) -Swarthmore College scored two late goals in the first half to record a 2-0 victory over the Widener University men's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

The Garnet (2-1), who outshot the Pride 21-8, capitalized off a free kick taken by Tommy Sheehan in the 39th minute. With the Widener offense unable to find the back of the net, the visitors then added insurance when Michael Nafziger finished a through ball from Quentin Millette to close out the scoring.

Michael Thut made two saves for Swarthmore to pick up the win. Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) turned away a season-high eight shots in the losing effort.

Widener Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller to Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2016) – Sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) recorded her 11th career double-double, but it was not enough as the Widener University volleyball team dropped a marathon match by a 3-2 decision on Wednesday evening in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener for both schools. Set scores of the seesaw affair were 18-25, 25-14, 13-25, 25-20 and 10-15.

Widener found itself trailing 2-1 through three sets before rallying once again in a fourth frame which featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. Despite trailing in the beginning, the Pride scored four straight points and went ahead 5-4 on a solo block by Kelsey Lee (Chesapeake, Va.) to start gaining momentum. After falling behind by an 18-17 score, the visitors finished strong by scoring eight of the next 10 points. Freshman Caroline Dangel (Eldersburg, Md.) recorded a service ace to give the Pride the lead for good and then set up sophomore Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) and Dorman for consecutive kills to even things out and force a decisive fifth set.

The Pride held early leads of 2-1 and 3-2 in the final frame courtesy of kills by sophomore Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) and Dorman, but the Dutchwomen answered with an 8-2 run to regain control with a 10-5 advantage. The deficit would prove to be too much for the visitors to overcome, as the Dutchwomen held on to give head coach Wayne Perry his 600th career win.

Dorman paced Widener (2-3, MAC Commonwealth 0-1) by notching a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. She also led the team with four service aces and two blocks. Kalinock had a team-leading 13 kills, while senior captain Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) added 25 assists and classmate Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) finished with 14 digs.

Lebanon Valley (2-3, MAC Commonwealth 1-0) was led by Greta Wiedemoyer, who recorded a triple-double with 16 kills, 25 assists and 13 digs. Melanie Phifer notched 18 digs and Jess Attieh contributed 10 kills.

Widener will regroup and be back in action when it hosts Swarthmore for its home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Widener Field Hockey Rallies Past Neumann in Overtime

ASTON, Pa. (Sept. 9, 2016)– Freshman Sam Scoma (Blue Bell, Pa.) found the back of the cage in the 74th minute to propel the Widener University field hockey team to a 4-3 overtime victory over Neumann on a hot and humid Friday evening.

After scoring in the waning minutes of regulation to eventually force extra time, junior captain Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) came in on a breakaway with Scoma and found the freshman with a short cross that made it around the unguarded Neumann goalkeeper. Scoma then one-timed a shot to give the Pride the sudden victory.

The teams exchanged goals in the first half. Widener struck first when sophomore Kelly Ramsdale (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) finished a pass from Herr in the 23rd minute for her first career marker, but Neumann had a quick answer and evened the score when Julia Mustin came in on a breakaway and fired the ball to the right post just 2:27 later. The teams went into the recess deadlocked at 1-1.

The seesaw battle continued into the second half, as the teams exchanged once again goals over the next 35 minutes to eventually force overtime. Becky Guinto scored off a muffed shot to put the Knights ahead in the 45th minute before Herr answered shortly afterwards to knot things up by evading several defenders and sending the ball into the cage.

Mustin then scored her second goal of the game for Neumann (2-1) when she found the ball through a scrum of players with less than seven minutes left. Widener, however, did not give in and tied things up for the third time when Herr lifted the ball which was perfectly arced over the Knight defense and into the cage to send the match into overtime. Sophomore Sarah Quintus (Drexel Hill, Pa.) was credited with an assist on the play.

By also setting up the game-winning marker in the extra session, Herr finished the evening with two goals and two assists. She became the first Pride player to factor into four goals in a single game since Meghan Garvey finished with three goals and one assist in a 5-3 triumph over Hood on Oct. 26, 2013.

Senior Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) picked up the victory between the pipes for Widener by making five saves. Neumann's Caitlyn Johnson suffered the loss after turning away two shots.

Widener (3-1) returns to action when it hosts Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Short-Handed Widener Men’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to Southern Virginia

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2016) – Playing short-handed for most of the second half, the Widener University men’s soccer team fell to Southern Virginia by a 2-1 score on a hot and steamy Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

Southern Virginia (2-1) got on the board first when Tyler McElwee received a pass from Brandon Zapata and went in all alone against the Pride’s Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.). McElwee beat the Widener goalkeeper with a shot to the near post to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage which they took into recess.

Widener answered right back with a quick strike in the opening minutes of the second half. After sophomore Justin O’Brien (Carlisle, Pa.) played the ball into the box, classmate Dylan Pratzner (Wallingford, Pa.) eventually stole it away from the Southern Virginia defense on a clear attempt and lifted the ball into the upper 90 of the net to even the score just 2:09 into the frame.

The match then took an unexpected turn shortly after the equalizer, as Widener’s goalkeeper received a red card for using his hands outside of the 18-yard box. Despite the setback, freshman Jordan Katz (North Wales, Pa.) came in and made three key saves in his collegiate debut and the Pride continued to create scoring opportunities.

Pratzner had multiple scoring chances shortly after the Pride found themselves playing a man down, which included attempting a penalty shot, but goalkeeper Keenan Carroll turned everything away to keep the match tied. The Knights then earned a penalty kick of their own in the waning minutes, and Zapata capitalized on the opportunity in the 87th to give the visitors the win.

Carroll was credited with the victory for Southern Virginia by making five saves. Katz took the loss despite making three stops, including one from point-blank range shortly before the deciding play.

Widener (1-3) will hit the road for the first time this fall when it visits Immaculata on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 4:00 p.m.

Widener Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Swarthmore

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 13, 2016) – The Widener University volleyball team dropped its home opener to Swarthmore in straight sets on Wednesday evening at the Schwartz Center. Set scores were 25-6, 25-21 and 25-18.

Despite surrendering the first two points, Swarthmore dominated the opening frame and rattled off six unanswered to prompt a Widener timeout. The Pride, however, would come no closer than four points and the Garnet closed out the set on an 11-0 run with Sarah Girard serving to seize control.

Widener was more competitive in the second frame and took leads of 7-4 and 11-7 with sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) and senior Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, Pa.) leading the offense. Senior Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) set up Ruditys for two straight kills, but a service error on the next play started to swing the pendulum in the other direction. Mehra den Braven finished consecutive passes from Malia Scott to put the Garnet ahead by a 16-14 score to prompt a Widener timeout, and the visitors never trailed the rest of the way.

The third set was once again competitive at the beginning while featuring four ties and two lead changes. Swarthmore, however, broke a 12-12 tie on a den Braven kill and scored five straight to catapult into the lead. Another kill by den Braven on match point gave the Garnet the victory.

Widener was led by Barbieri’s double-double effort. The senior captain and setter finished with 17 assists and 12 digs. Senior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) also recorded 12 digs, while Dorman and Ruditys added nine kills apiece.

Sarah Wallace led Swarthmore with a double-double performance. She finished the match with 12 kills and 11 digs. Elise Cummings added 13 assists and 11 digs, while Malia Scott had a match-high 21 assists and den Braven finished with a match-high 13 kills.

MMACULATA, Pa. (Sept. 13, 2016) – Sophomore Kevin McKenna (North Wales, Pa.) found the back of the net with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation to help the Widener University men’s soccer team salvage a 1-1 tie against Immaculata on Wednesday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium.

The Pride outshot Immaculata (2-2-1) over the first 45 minutes by a 5-2 account, which included putting four on target, but unfortunately could not push the ball past opposing goalkeeper Joe Lubonski. The teams went into the recess deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second half, Widener (1-3-1) continued to apply pressure and nearly scored on a header shot from senior captain Tommy O’Keefe (Lutherville, Md.). However, Lubonski made another save and the Mighty Macs were able to find the back of the net just 1:25 later. Alex Noel finished a pass from Matt Dunn by firing into the upper right corner of the net to put the hosts ahead in the 58th minute.

The hosts appeared to be in a position to come away with the win heading into the end of regulation, but the Pride kept fighting and were able to net the equalizer in the waning seconds when McKenna unleashed a shot from the top of the box. Pride goalkeeper Jordan Katz (North Wales, Pa.) then made a diving save off a shot from Alex D’Angelo in overtime on the only real opportunity for either side in the extra sessions, and the match would eventually end in a draw.

Immaculata’s Lubonski made seven stops between the pipes to pick up the shutout victory. Katz, who was making his first career start as a collegian, turned away five shots for Widener.

The Pride return to action when they visit Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday, Sept. 17 at noon.

Widener Field Hockey Downed by Gwynedd Mercy

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2016) – The Widener University field hockey team was dealt a 5-1 setback against Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday evening at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Gwynedd Mercy (4-1) set the tone for the game early when Shannon Carroll found Brianna O’Connell for an uncontested score just 1:33 into the game. Widener tried to answer back and gaining nine penalty corner opportunities in the first half alone, but the Griffin defense turned everything away. After freshman Sam Scoma (Blue Bell, Pa.) had multiple shots stopped by goalkeeper Samantha Soscia, the Griffins came back the other way and doubled their lead on a tip in by Allie Bauder to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Griffins came out strong again in the second half and put the game away, as Melissa Russo recorded a natural hat trick in a span of 7:05 by finishing two passes from Carroll and another from Madison Reiss. The Pride improved their play later in the half following a timeout and got on the board with 24.2 seconds left when senior Meghan McLaughlin (Woolwich Township, N.J.) received a pass from junior captain Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) and fired on an unguarded Soscia for her first marker of the year, but the deficit was too much for the hosts to overcome.

Senior Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) made four saves in the setback for Widener, which outshot its opponent by a 14-11 count and had a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners. Gwynedd Mercy’s Soscia turned away six shots to earn the victory.

Widener (3-2) will regroup and be back in action when it hosts Delaware Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Kayla Herr Named PhilaFieldHockey Student-Athlete of the Week

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sept. 15, 2016) – Widener University junior field hockey captain Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) has been named the PhilaFieldHockey Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced by the organization.

Herr helped the field hockey team register a 2-0 record last week by factoring into all six of the team's goals. She began the week by scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory over Drew on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Herr followed up that performance by contributing two goals and two assists in last Friday's 4-3 overtime win over Neumann on the road. She most notably scored the equalizing goal with just 1:30 remaining in regulation to force overtime before setting up freshman Sam Scoma's game-winning marker in the 74th minute during the extra session.

In addition, Herr became the first player to factor into four goals in a single game since Meghan Garvey finished with three goals and one assist in a 5-3 triumph over Hood on Oct. 26, 2013. Through five games, she has 13 points on five goals and three assists and has factored into eight of the team’s ten markers.

Herr is the only junior serving as a team captain this season. She is also a strong student with a cumulative GPA which is above a 3.9 as a biology/pre-physical therapy major. Furthermore, Herr is part of Widener's Honors Program of General Education, serves as a team representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is a Resident Assistant (RA) on campus. She also traveled to Honduras this past summer to broaden her education and cultural understanding.

“Kayla encompasses what it means to be a true student-athlete, “said head coach Larissa Gillespie. “She is our leader on the field and an amazing student who has also taken advantage of experiential learning opportunities. Kayla is overall a positive role model on and off the field who is deeply involved with campus life, and she is truly deserving of this recognition.”

Dorman and Ruditys Lead Volleyball Past Immaculata

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 15, 2016) – Sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) smashed 18 kills, including seven in the final set, and senior captain Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, Pa.) had a double-double to propel the Widener University volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Immaculata on Thursday evening at the Schwartz Center. Set scores were 25-12, 25-18, 20-25 and 26-24.

Widener (3-4) cruised in set one by scoring the first three points and never trailed. Junior Lauren Daly (Springfield, Pa.) and Dorman teamed up for a block to make it 10-2, and Ruditys set up fellow captain Sabrina Barbieri for a kill to give the hosts a 14-3 advantage to prompt an Immaculata timeout. The Pride did not allow the visitors to come closer than nine the rest of the way and easily took the opening frame.

The Pride found themselves trailing early in the second set by a 5-3 score before accumulating six straight points with freshman Caroline Dangel (Eldersburg, Md.) serving. Dangel recorded an ace to tie the score up a 5-all before Dorman added kills on three of the next four rallies to put the hosts ahead. Immaculata regained the lead a few times in the middle of the set and were ahead by a 13-12 score courtesy of a Shelby Belk kill, but Widener answered by rattling off eight straight to take control. Sophomore Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) prompted Immaculata to take two timeouts during the hot stretch on kills, providing more than enough insurance for the hosts to eventually win the set.

Even though Widener found itself ahead by a 7-4 score in the third set, the tide turned in favor of the Mighty Macs with libero Molly Truitt leading a comeback. The senior played a huge role with helping the visitors score 10 in a row by providing four service aces during a run which suddenly made it 14-7. Dorman finished a pass from Barbieri after a Pride timeout, but the deficit was too much to overcome and the Mighty Macs would force another frame.

Despite trailing 9-4 early in the fourth set, the Mighty Macs continued to claw their way back after taking a timeout in an attempt to slow down the Pride and later found themselves ahead by a 22-20 score on a Belk kill. The Mighty Macs were in prime position to extend the match to five, but a service error by Madi Curley on set point made it 24-22 and swung the momentum over to the host. Dorman then took over by finishing three passes from Barbieri to give the Pride the 26-24 set victory as well as the match.

In addition to recording 18 kills, Dorman also contributed nine digs and hit at a .273 clip to help lead the way for Widener. Ruditys had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs to go along with three aces, while Barbieri finished with 45 assists and senior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) contributed 23 digs. Daly matched a career high with seven kills.

Immaculata (1-7) was paced by Arden Vizzard’s double-double performance of 15 kills and 23 digs. Truitt had 20 digs and four aces, and Olivia Zdradzinski filled the scoresheet with 29 assists, four kills and six digs.

Widener will continue a busy stretch when it begins competing at the Neumann Invitational tomorrow afternoon. The Pride will face Catholic at 4:00 p.m. and Moravian at 6:00 p.m. to open up action at the two-day event.

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2016) – The Widener University men’s soccer team fell to Gwynedd Mercy by a score of 4-2 on the road on Saturday afternoon.

Widener (1-4-1) fell behind early in the first half, but the Pride came back strong with a goal headed in by Dylan Pratzner (Wallingford, Pa.) in the 21st minute to tie the match. Minutes later, Pratzner also set up Kevin McKenna (North Wales, Pa.) to give Widener the lead at 2-1.

But after tying the score shortly before halftime, the Griffins completed a rally by finding the back of the net two more times in the second frame to stun the Pride and earn the 4-2 win. Matt Saba scored twice to spark the rally before Danny Saba tallied an insurance marker.

Overall, the match was evenly played with both teams attempting eight shots apiece. Senior goalkeeper Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) made four saves for Widener, while Ryan Oyola of Gwynedd Mercy (4-3) turned away one shot in relief to pick up the victory.

Widener started off tournament play strong by winning the first set against Catholic by a score of 25-18, but the Cardinals recovered and took the next three frames to earn the victory. Neumann 3, Widener 2 (26-28, 25-11, 22-25, 25-17, 12-15)

Widener came up just short in a back-and-forth affair against the host Knights in a morning match. The Pride forced a fifth and deciding set, which was also tightly contested, but unfortunately could not complete a comeback. Barbieri and freshman Caroline Dangel (Eldersburg, Md.) tallied 22 assists apiece, while Dangel fell just short of a double-double with nine digs. Kalinock racked up nine blocks to go along with 11 kills.

Widener 3, Rutgers-Camden 0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-16)

After a tough start, Widener ended the tournament on a high note by sweeping Rutgers-Camden in straight sets. The Pride got off to a hot start and built up a 9-2 lead in the opening frame to set the tone for the entire match. Dangel registered her first collegiate double-double with a career-high 27 assists and 10 digs, and Dorman finished with her fourth double-double of the fall by contributing 10 kills and 10 digs. Ruditys hit at a .357 clip by registering six kills against only one error on 14 swings.

At the end of the two-day event, Dorman was one of eight players named to the all-tournament team. The team’s top scoring threat finished the two-day event with 53 kills, 36 digs, four blocks and a service ace over four matches.

Widener Volleyball Rallies From Behind Three Times to Defeat Wesley in Straight Sets

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 20, 2016) – Senior captain Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, Pa.) notched her second double-double of the season and sophomore Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) closed out two sets with aces to help lead the Widener University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Wesley on Tuesday evening at the Schwartz Center. The Pride rallied from behind in each frame after facing early deficits to win by set scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 28-26.

Widener surrendered the first two points of the opening frame, but a Ruditys kill put the hosts on the board and a service ace by Winn gave the Pride a 5-4 advantage and a lead they would not surrender. Senior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) added two aces of her own and the margin grew to as many as nine at 23-14 due to a Wolverine attacking error, providing enough insurance for the Pride to take the opening set on a Winn smash which was set up by senior captain Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.).

The Pride never led in the second set until the final two plays and found themselves trailing 4-1 due to several miscues on their own side of the net. But despite the slow start, the team continued chipping away at the deficit and tied the match four times at 20s, 22s and 23s and 24s. Barbieri then found Ruditys for a kill to give the Pride its first lead of the frame at 25-24, and Winn put the Wolverines away with an ace.

Widener once again shook off a slow start in the third set to complete the sweep. After a kill by Tania Rounds made it 6-1 in favor of the visitors, the Pride answered with five straight points to get back in the game with freshman Liz Kwon (Ellicott City, Md.) serving. Junior Lauren Daly (Springfield, Pa.) teamed up with Winn and sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) on blocks during the stretch. Even though the Wolverines recovered and bounced back ahead by as many as six, the Pride fought back again and took their first lead of the frame at 22-21 on a block by Ruditys and Kalinock.

Wesley (7-4) appeared to be poised to force a force frame when Jessica Tynes served with the visitors holding a 24-22 advantage on the scoreboard, but a service error would swing the pendulum in the other direction and prove to be costly. Kalinock recorded a kill to tie it up at 24s and extend the set, and Winn broke a 24-all deadlock by recording a kill followed by a service ace on match point.

Ruditys led Widener with a double-double effort, registering 13 kills and 10 digs. Dorman smashed 16 kills and hit at a .371 clip, while freshman Ashley McAfee (Abington, Pa.) added a career-high 13 digs. Winn notched nine kills, three aces and five digs, and Elliott finished with 14 digs and two service aces.

Wesley was paced by Tionne Graves-Brown in the losing effort. She posted a .290 hitting percentage with 11 kills against only two errors on 31 swings while also providing seven digs. Lindsay Burg notched 14 assists, while Kristin Wissler had 18 digs.

Widener (5-7) resumes Middle Atlantic Conference play when it entertains Albright tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m.

mie Lockard Returns to Widener as Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2016) – Director of Athletics Jack Shafer has announced alumnus Jamie Lockard as the new head men’s lacrosse coach at Widener University. He will be overseeing the program for the second time after most recently serving in the same position at Albright and Wheaton.

“We are very excited to have Jamie join us again at Widener as our head men’s lacrosse coach,” said Shafer. “His experience and success at multiple Division III programs, as well as his familiarity with our institution, make him an ideal fit to lead our men’s lacrosse program. He has already helped establish this program as a former student-athlete and successful head coach. We believe that Jamie will be able to hit the ground running and continue our program’s tradition of excellence on and off the field.”

Lockard comes to Widener after spending the last season at Albright. As the second head coach in the program’s five-year history, he helped the Lions advance to the semifinal round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament and mentored six student-athletes who garnered postseason recognition from the league.

Prior to his stint at Albright, Lockard was the head coach at Wheaton College in Massachusetts for four seasons. In this position, he most notably led the Lyons to a program-record 11 wins in 2012, which included registering a 5-1 ledger in league play, and was recognized as the Pilgrim League Coach of the Year that spring. Wheaton advanced to the conference tournament three times in four years under his guidance and reached the conference championship game against perennial power Springfield College in 2012. In addition, the program produced 18 all-conference players, one conference player of the year and 17 academic all-conference selections over those four years.

Lockard’s first head coaching stint was at Widener between the 2007 and 2011 seasons. During his five years at the helm, Widener advanced to four NCAA Tournaments and compiled an overall mark of 58-36 in that span. The 2011 squad also broke the school record for wins in a season and won a record-breaking 13 games in a row. Lockard was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 2010 and produced 31 all-conference players as well as three student-athletes who made the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team.

Before beginning his coaching career, Lockard was a standout student-athlete for the Pride. The four-year letterwinner was most notably a two-time USILA All-America selection, the 2002 MAC Player of the Year and the 2003 Widener University Male Athlete of the Year.

“I would like to thank Jack Shafer and the search committee for this opportunity,” stated Lockard. “As an alumnus and former coach, I feel honored to be able to return to this institution which is very special to me. Widener’s excellent academic reputation, coupled with the rich tradition of the men’s lacrosse program, attracts some of the best student-athletes. I am looking forward to building upon the program’s strong foundation and annually competing at a national level.”

Lockard, who has been a part of eight of Widener’s nine NCAA Tournament teams in program history, earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in sport management at Widener in 2003. He will begin his duties later this month.

Widener Volleyball Sweeps Albright for First Conference Win

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2016) – Sophomore Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) and senior Kristin DeCicco (Sewell, N.J.) combined for 16 kills on 20 swings to help the Widener University volleyball team sweep Albright in straight sets on Wednesday evening at the Schwartz Center. Set scores were 25-21, 25-6 and 25-18.

Like last night against Wesley, Widener (6-7, MAC Commonwealth 1-1) found itself trailing in the first set before recovering later in the frame. The Lions jumped out to a 17-12 lead on consecutive service aces by Michaela Curran, but the Pride once again came back to take the set and seize the early momentum. Senior captain Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, Pa.) finished consecutive passes from classmate and fellow captain Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) to help the hosts regain the lead at 20-19 before DeCicco ended it with a kill.

The Pride never trailed in the next frame and rattled off 18 straight points with freshman Ashley McAfee serving to cruise and win by a 25-6 score. DeCicco set the tone by smashing away a pass from Barbieri, while sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) had six kills and junior Lauren Daly (Springfield, Pa.) added three block assists during the hot stretch which provided more than enough insurance for the hosts to take the set.

Widener burst out to a 5-1 lead in the third frame and never looked back. Kalinock led the way with five kills, while freshman Liz Kwon (Ellicott City, Md.) accounted for two of the Pride’s five aces in the frame to help the hosts run away with the victory.

Kalinock and DeCicco led the way for Widener by tallying nine and seven kills while hitting at clips of .818 and .778, respectively. Both players did not commit an attacking error. Ruditys fell just shy of a double-double with eight kills and 10 digs, and Dorman had another solid all-around performance with 10 kills, six digs, three aces and two blocks. Daly matched a career high with five blocks.

Albright (2-6, MAC Commonwealth 0-2) was paced by setter Claudia Guise in the setback. She had 15 assists and five digs.

Widener will next face Stockton and Mary Washington at a tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24 beginning at noon.

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept 21, 2016) - A late goal by freshman Sam Scoma (Blue Bell, Pa.) was not enough as the Widener University field hockey team fell to Delaware Valley by a 2-1 decision on Wednesday evening at Edith R. Dixon Field.

After a scoreless 24 minutes, Delaware Valley's senior Stefania Swider found the back of the cage to break the game open. After six back-to-back penalty corners, Scoma put the Pride on the board in the 50th minute by finishing off a cross from Meredith Benson (Clifton Heights, Pa.) to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. But minutes later, Carlie Baldus capitalized off a rebounded shot to help the Aggies regain the lead in the 60th minute.

Widener fought to the very end, firing off three shots and earning three penalty corners with a player down and only five minutes left on the clock. The Aggie defense, however, stood tall and would not let anything get past goalkeeper Rosie Bishop.

The game was back-and-fourth with Delaware Valley outshooting Widener by a count of 12-10. Pride goalkeeper Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) made a valiant effort by tallying a total of three saves, while Delaware Valley's Bishop turned away two shots.

The Pride (3-3) will host Hood on Saturday, Sept 24 at 1 p.m.

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept 21, 2016) - The Widener men's soccer team earned a demanding 4-1 victory over Rosemont in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening.

The Pride improve 2-4-1 on the season, while the Ravens fall to 1-5-2 overall.

John Colbert (Louisville, Ky.) opened the scoring late in the second half with a through ball from Kevin McKenna (North Wales, Pa.) at the top of the 18-yard. Senior Tommy O’Keefe (Lutherville, Md.) then knocked home a penalty kick to double the lead.

Cavit Ulta put Rosemont on the board in the 67th minute by capitalizing off a free kick from 25 yards out, but sophomore Mac Shailey (State College, Pa.) answered back in the 72nd minute, putting away his second goal of the season. Shortly after, Shailey assisted teammate Zach Wagner (Douglassville, Pa.) to secure the Pride with a 4-1 victory.

Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) recorded one save in net for Widener which had a 15-6 advantage in total shots. Zach Bowe was forced to make five saves for the Ravens.

dener Women’s Soccer Bettered by Sixth-Ranked Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2016) – The Widener University women’s soccer team fell to nationally-ranked Swarthmore by a 4-0 score on Wednesday evening at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore (8-0) came out with a vengeance and scored three times in the first half. Hannah Lichtenstein opened the scoring when she stole an inbounds pass and shot a rocket to the upper 90 of the net just seven minutes into the match. Brittany Weiderhold doubled the advantage by finishing to the left post in the 13th minute, and Katie Dougherty tapped in a header near the goal line off a cross from Caroline Khanna in the 31st minute to make it 3-0.

Widener (2-2-2) had an opportunity late in the first half when Brielle Errico (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) took the ball into the box through the left side. The Swarthmore defense, however, forced her outside and the sophomore’s shot attempt went wide left of the goal. The Garnet would then tack on an insurance marker which came off the foot of Marin McCoy to produce the final outcome.

Amy Shmoys made two saves to pick up the victory between the pipes for Swarthmore, which has not surrendered a goal through eight matches this season. Widener’s Jenna Keating (Havertown, Pa.) finished with seven saves in the setback.

The Pride will face another tough test when they visit #19-ranked TCNJ on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

King’s Clips Widener Men’s Soccer in Double Overtime

WILKES BARRE, Pa.(Sept. 24 2016) - The Widener University men’s soccer team fought hard but fell to King’s College in double overtime by a 1-0 decision on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

King’s (4-4) outshot Widener 5-2 in the first half, but the Pride came out with vengeance in the second frame and went head-to-head with the Monarchs and matched them with an even shot count at 2-2. However, neither team was able to make a mark on the board to force the match into overtime.

The only goal of the match was scored by Brian Fenster in the 104th minute of double overtime off a defensive block from the Widener back line.

Senior Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa) recorded one save in 104 minutes for the Pride, while the Monarchs’ Owen Greedy turned away two shots. Tommy O’Keefe (Lutherville, Md.) recorded a game-high three shots.

#22 Mary Washington 3, Widener 0 (13-25, 14-25, 17-25)

Forney had another solid effort by tallying nine kills and hitting at a .241 clip. Barbieri notched 15 assists, and Dorman finished with a team-leading 10 digs.

Widener Volleyball Earns Four-Set Victory Over Alvernia

READING, Pa. (Sept. 27, 2016) – Freshman Caroline Dangel (Eldersburg, Md.) recorded her second double-double and set career highs for assists and digs as the Widener University volleyball team defeated Alvernia by a 3-1 decision on Tuesday evening at the Physical Education Center. Set scores were 25-16, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-14.

Widener (7-9, MAC Commonwealth 2-1) came out with a vengeance and scored the first four and nine of the first 10 points by primarily taking advantage of poor hitting by the Crusaders. Sophomore Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) later finished two passes from Dangel for points to make it 17-10 and prompt an Alvernia timeout before sophomore Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) scored the next two points for the Pride on kills. A service error by Laura Wachowicz allowed the visitors to clinch the opening set which also saw them hit at a blistering .378 clip as a squad.

The second set was much closer and featured seven ties between the two schools. Widener found itself leading a close frame by a 23-20 score courtesy of a kill by sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.), but the Crusaders came back and scored the next five points to take the set by two two. Wachowicz had a kill and a service ace to spark the run before a Pride attacking error produced the final.

In the third set, sophomore Kierston Forney (Manassas, Va.) came out firing and smashed three kills to give Widener a quick 3-1 advantage. Widener then broke out to a 16-10 lead and took control by getting two aces from Kalinock as well as two kills and a block from Dorman during a 5-0 run. The Crusaders made another comeback attempt at the end of the set, but this time the Pride held them off and got a kill from junior Lauren Daly (Springfield, Pa.) to win by a 25-23 score.

The Pride carried the momentum they got in the third set into the fourth and nearly led from wire-to-wire. After Alvernia’s Abby O’Donnell recorded a service ace on the opening rally, Forney added consecutive kills off of Dangel feeds to push the Pride ahead. Dorman then added kills at both ends of a stretch in which the visitors rattled off seven straight points to move ahead by a 21-11 score, and a smash by Forney on match point clinched the victory.

Dangel led the way for Widener by racking up 50 assists and 15 digs, which were both career bests, to go along with three kills and three aces. Forney added a career-high 19 kills, while Dorman had a double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs. Kalinock had a solid all-around effort by contributing nine kills, five digs, three aces and two blocks.

Alvernia (5-7, MAC Commonwealth 1-3) was paced by Emily Smith’s double-double effort. She finished with 14 kills and 10 digs. O’Donnell notched 35 assists and nine digs, while Wachowicz added six kills, 18 digs and three blocks.

Widener Field Hockey Holds Off Stockton to Earn Fifth Victory

GALLOWAY, N.J. (Sept. 27, 2016) – Junior captain Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) and classmate Eliza Newlin (Lewisburg, Pa.) each scored a goal to lift the Widener University field hockey team to a 2-1 road victory over Stockton on Tuesday evening at the Stockton Turf Field.

Herr capitalized on the Pride’s first shot attempt of the game when she evaded multiple defenders and unleashed a rocket that landed in the back of the cage in the 13th minute. Senior goalkeeper Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.), meanwhile, put forth one of her best efforts of the fall by making a season-high six saves in the first half alone to keep Widener ahead by a 1-0 score at the break.

The Pride continued to make the most of their opportunities in the second frame and doubled their lead when Newlin finished a pass from senior captain Colleen Riley (Tannersville, Pa.) on an empty cage in the 40th minute.

Stockton (6-3), however, clawed back into the game and finally got on the board when Kellie Brining banged home a shot from the right side in the 55th minute of action to slice the deficit in half. Leah Davies was credited with an assist on the play.

Following a Widener timeout, Stockton continued to apply pressure by earning six penalty corners and attempting five shots over the final 15 minutes of regulation. The Pride defense, however, turned everything away and Ninos dove for a save from point-blank range in the waning moments to allow the visitors to escape with the one-goal victory.

Ninos finished the game with eight saves to earn the victory for an opportunistic Widener squad which was outshot by a count of 17-6. Stockton’s Emily Sorochynskyj made one save in the setback.

Widener (5-3) returns home to host top-ranked Messiah for a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth matchup on Saturday, Oct. 1 at noon.

Widener Men’s Soccer Comes Up Short in Non-Conference Battle With Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2016) – The Widener University men’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Stevens on Wednesday evening at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The Ducks, who have made 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart in the first half to earn the non-conference victory.

After a Tommy O’Keefe (Lutherville, Md.) corner kick attempt on a set piece was successfully blocked and cleared away, Stevens (4-3-1) scored two quick goals to move ahead. Patrick Masur capitalized on a penalty kick which was awarded as a result of a Pride hand ball inside the box in the 13th minute and then set up Jay Mikula with a cross from the right side just 1:43 later to put the Ducks firmly in control.

Despite the slow start, the Pride regrouped during the break and began an attempted rally in the second half when sophomore Kevin McKenna (North Wales, Pa.) headed home a long pass which came from classmate Justin O’Brien (Carlisle, Pa.). The strike in the 53rd minute sliced the deficit down to a single goal.

Widener tried to utilize the marker as a spark and spent more time in its offensive third. The Ducks defense, however, would not allow the visitors to attempt another shot and a Pride corner kick opportunity in the waning minutes was cleared successfully to help the hosts escape with the one-goal win.

Stevens netminder Mitko Bozinov picked up the victory without having to make a save. The Pride’s Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) turned away six shots in the setback.

Widener (2-6-1) will look to get back on track when it hosts Stevenson in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener for both schools on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

dener Volleyball Falls to DeSales

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 29, 2016) – Senior captain Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) and sophomore Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) each recorded a double-double, but the Widener University volleyball team fell to DeSales by a 3-1 decision on Thursday night at the Schwartz Center. Set scores were 19-25, 17-25, 25-23 and 17-25.

DeSales (11-6) started the opening set on a roll by scoring the first six and nine of the first 10 points. Cristal Fernandez had two service aces during the opening four rallies as well as a kill to put the Bulldogs in control. Widener attempted to rally and slashed an 11-point deficit down to four on consecutive kills by Dorman which were set up by Barbieri, but the visitors recovered and took advantage of poor hitting by the Pride to move back ahead by a 20-15 score and force a timeout. Another Pride error on set point gave the Bulldogs the opening set.

Widener (7-10) took an early lead at 4-1 in the second frame before the Bulldogs bounced back to create a seesaw affair. After 11 ties and five lead changes, DeSales established the upper hand when a service ace by Gabby Savite made it 16-15 in favor of the guests. The Bulldogs would then close the set out on a 12-3 run, which was capped by two straight kills by Jess Swanson.

The beginning of the third set was evenly matched and featured four ties. Widener, however, took control this time when junior Lauren Daly (Springfield, Pa.) smashed a kill to spark a 7-1 run for the hosts. Dorman contributed six kills and nine digs in the frame, which included scoring the deciding point, to help the Pride edge out their opponent by a 25-23 score and extend the match into a fourth set.

Widener continued to fight back and took leads of 3-2 and 4-3 on a service ace by freshman Liz Kwon (Ellicott City, Md.) and a kill by sophomore Kierston Forney (Manassas, Va.), respectively, but the Bulldogs recovered and went on a 12-5 run to prompt a timeout by the hosts. The Pride would come no closer than four points the rest of the way, as the match would end on a service error that landed behind the line.

Barbieri paced Widener with 35 assists and 12 digs to go along with five kills, while Dorman recorded 17 kills and 15 assists in the setback. Senior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) contributed double-digit digs with 13 and also had two aces.

DeSales was led by Gabby Savite’s double-double effort. She had 16 kills and 14 digs. Lisa Wallitsch finished with 49 kills, eight digs and four aces, and Morghan Shoemaker also tallied 16 kills to help the Bulldogs earn the win.

Widener Women’s Soccer Blanked by Stevenson in Conference Opener

CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2016) – The Widener University women’s soccer team fell to Stevenson by a 3-0 score in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener for both schools on Saturday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

Widener had several good scoring opportunities throughout the match and beginning at the midway point of the first half. Sophomore Brielle Errico sent a through ball that reached Alyssa Dionisio, but Mustang goalkeeper Tiffany McKee came out and stopped the Pride freshman from finishing.

The visitors then used that momentum to get on the board shortly afterwards, as Brianna Christie finished a pass from Alayna Roesener in the 27th minute. The marker came following an attempt by Alexis Siejack that bounced off the crossbar.

Stevenson (4-4-1, MAC Commonwealth 1-0), which led by a 1-0 score at the recess, tacked on two more goals in the second half. Jordan Porretto capitalized on a rebound off a Pride defender in the 51st minute, and Kailee Ziegler added insurance by heading home a corner kick taken by Brittney Celano just 3:15 later.

Widener continued to find ways to chip away at the deficit and nearly found the back of the net in the 71st minute when sophomore Gabrielle Campbell unleashed a shot which was headed to the upper 90. McKee, however, made the save to help preserve the shutout.

McKee earned her second clean sheet of the season by making three saves for Stevenson, while the Pride’s Jenna Keating turned away six shots in the loss.
