Widener Men’s Lacrosse Drops Non-Conference Battle to #13 Dickinson

CHESTER, Pa. (March 12, 2017) – The Widener University men’s lacrosse team dropped a non-conference game to #13 Dickinson by a 12-6 score on a cold Sunday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

The teams played a tight first quarter and stayed neck-and-neck throughout the first half. After two men were called off for penalties with the team trailing 1-0, Widener came back the other way and scored a man-down goal when junior Brandon Sweder (Mount Laurel, N.J.) found senior Chris Sanchez (Flanders, N.J.) for a marker with 2:28 left in the opening frame.

Despite surrendering another goal early in the second quarter, Widener capitalized on special teams again courtesy on a man-up goal by sophomore Brady Franks (State College, Pa.) to even the score at 2-2 with 9:20 on the clock. The Pride then took their first lead when junior Patrick Richardson (Westville, N.J.) blitzed down the field, evaded several Red Devil defenders and beat goalkeeper Andrew Jones for his second marker of the season.

Dickinson (4-0), however, recovered by scoring five straight goals and nine of the next 10 to put the game out of reach. Dylan Maher led the offensive outburst by scoring three goals during the hot stretch, and John Lockwood also provided a spark by netting a goal and two helpers during the same timeframe to put the game out of reach.

Lockwood accumulated a game-high five points to pace Dickinson, which remained undefeated by outshooting the Pride by a count of 45-26 and having a 41-23 advantage in ground balls. Nate Usich caused three turnovers and picked up six ground balls, while Austin Hurdle and Ryan Campbell combined to win 16 of the 22 faceofffs. Jones made eight saves between the pipes.

Junior John Ferguson (Springfield, Pa.) led Widener in the setback. The defender scooped up six ground balls, caused a turnover and tallied an assist. Junior Shane Cook finished with three caused turnovers along with two ground balls, and sophomore netminder Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) turned away 12 shots.

Widener (1-3) is scheduled to return to action when it hosts the University of New England on Wednesday, March 15 at 4:00 p.m.

Widener's Ian Gaynor Garners All-America Accolades in 50 Free at NCAA Championships

SHENANDOAH, Texas (March 15, 2017) – Senior Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) of the Widener University men’s swimming team became an All-America selection in the 50-yard freestyle on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Championships at the Conroe ISD Natatorium.

Gaynor earned the recognition by finishing fourth in the 50 free with a school-record time of 20.08 seconds during the evening session. The senior broke his own previous program standard of 20.18, which he established on a relay split in a dual meet against Hood, Messiah and FDU-Florham on Nov. 5, 2016.

With the fourth-place finish, Gaynor became Widener's first swimmer in school history – male or female – to achieve NCAA All-America status in three consecutive seasons. This evening's race was his highest finish in the 50 free at NCAAs after placing 10th as a sophomore in 2015 and in a tie for 11th place during his junior campaign in 2016.

Gaynor will take a few days off and conclude his collegiate career at the NCAA Championships on Saturday when he races in the 100 free. The preliminary round is slated to start at 11:00 a.m. EST.

Widener Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off University of New England in 12-10 Triumph

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. (March 16, 2017) – Junior Anthony Paone (Warrington, Pa.) won 15 faceoffs to help create instant offense and matched a career high by scooping up 11 ground balls as the Widener University men’s lacrosse team defeated the University of New England by a 12-10 score on Thursday afternoon at Bryn Athyn College’s General Nelson Field.

Widener exploded offensively to net 10 goals in the first half and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. After Paone won the opening faceoff, sophomore Shane Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) took a quick pass from junior Chris Drake (Morristown, N.J.) and fired the ball past Nor’easter goalkeeper David Pearson just nine seconds in the contest. UNE seized a 3-2 lead when Mitch Mullin found Philip Young for a marker at the 9:47 mark, but the Pride closed the opening quarter with three straight goals and never trailed again.

Despite yielding two goals in the second quarter, Widener (2-3) closed the half on a 5-0 to begin pulling away. Senior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) scored the team’s third of four man-up goals to spark the run, and Taylor capped the streak by finding the back of the net with just six seconds left to make it 10-5 at the break.

UNE, however, slowly chipped away at the deficit in the second half and made a furious attempt to rally in the closing minutes. After Schulte scored a man-up marker to give the Pride a 12-7 cushion with 4:48 remaining, UNE caught fire and scored three times in a span of 1:16. Alex Zadworny scored to create a 12-10 score with 42 seconds on the clock to keep the Nor’Easters in striking distance, but Paone won the critical faceoff that ensued to allow the Pride to hang on for the win.

Schulte found the back of the net five times to lead the offense for Widener, which most notably was 4-of-6 on man-up opportunities with three of the markers coming from the star senior. The Pride also had a commanding 44-33 advantage in ground balls and a outshot the Nor’Easters by a narrow 35-33 margin.

Taylor finished with a hat trick, while junior defender John Ferguson (Springfield, Pa.) scooped up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Sophomore netminder Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) made 12 saves.

UNE (4-1) was paced by Dan Auger and Zadworny in the setback. Auger finished with four points on one goal and three assists, and Zadworny added a hat trick. Pearson picked up four ground balls, caused two turnovers and turned away nine shots between the pipes.

Widener will face a nationally-ranked opponent in the Centennial Conference for the second time this week when it treks to #14-ranked Gettysburg on Saturday, March 18 for another 1:00 p.m. matinee.

ationally-Ranked Gettysburg Betters Widener Men’s Lacrosse

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (March 18, 2017) – Sophomore Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) turned away 13 shots between the pipes, but it wasn’t enough, as the Widener University men’s lacrosse team fell to #14 Gettysburg by a 9-3 score on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field.

Gettysburg scored two quick goals just 41 seconds apart on unassisted tallies by Reed Barbe and Tommy Heller, but the Pride’s defense, along with Horton, did not surrender another marker for the more than 25 minutes to keep the visitors in the game. Horton made nine saves in the first half, including one which led to the Pride’s first goal.

Widener got on the board at the 2:59 mark of the second quarter, as junior Shane Cook (Lincoln, Pa.) raced down the field in transition shortly after a Horton stop and passed to sophomore Brady Franks. Before the Bullets could set up their defense, Franks found classmate Kevin Kerby (Scotch Plains, N.J.) for the team’s first goal of the game. Despite being outshot by a 27-6 margin through 30 minutes, the Pride only trailed 3-1 at the recess.

After surrendering a goal early in the third quarter, Widener took advantage of an opportunity in which they played two men up and sliced the margin back down to a pair of goals when senior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) found the back of the net for the 14th time this season.

The Pride thought they had a goal to bring the deficit down to one when Mitchell Phillips (Wyomissing, Pa.) came from behind the net and unleashed a shot that trickled in with three minutes left, but the junior was called for a crease violation. The Bullets then came back the other way and scored on a Blake Gray strike to move ahead by three at 5-2 before Jack Harvey later added a man-down goal midway through the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Barbee led a balanced Gettysburg attack by accumulating a team-high three points on one goal and two assists. Harvey scored twice with both goals coming in the fourth quarter, while Heller and Gray also added two markers apiece. Goalkeeper Tim Brady redirected five shots for the Bullets, who finished with a commanding 48-19 advantage in total shots in the contest.

In addition to Horton, the Pride also got strong contributions from junior John Ferguson (Springfield, Pa.) and Cook in the setback. Ferguson scooped up five ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Cook picked up four ground balls. Schulte and Franks each recorded a goal and an assist.

Widener (2-4) is slated to return to action when it hosts DeSales on Saturday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m.

Widener Softball Sweeps Twinbill at Wesley

DOVER, Del. (March 19, 2017) – Senior Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) and junior Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) each picked up a win in the circle while combining for five hits to propel the Widener University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Wesley on Sunday afternoon at DuPont Field. The Pride won the opener, 11-7, before rallying from four runs down to take the nightcap by a 9-5 decision.

Widener scored at least one run in each of the first six innings of the opener and never trailed. Senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) started the game with a bunt single, stole second, teamed up with classmate Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.) for a double steal and then came home on a fielder’s choice play to put the Pride ahead and set the tone.

Schengrund, who was also patrolling the circle, helped herself out during a seesaw battle by blasting a two-run double to the power alley in left center to give the visitors a 5-2 advantage in the third. She then doubled again and came home on a Horvath single in the fifth and went yard for the first time of her career to cap a four-run sixth inning. The dinger gave the Pride an 11-5 lead at the time and provided insurance for the team to come away with the victory.

In addition to going 3-for-4 from the plate with three hits for extra bases, Schengrund picked up the victory in the circle by striking out nine and allowing five hits and three earned runs over five frames. She also set career highs for hits, doubles and runs batted in. Wesley’s Lindsay Siok fell to 6-3 after surrendering 12 hits and 11 runs, including seven earned, over six innings of work.

Wesley (10-6) got off to a strong start in the nightcap and built up a 5-1 lead in the first by capitalizing on two Pride errors in the frame. Devin MacKay put the Wolverines ahead by slicing a single down the line in left, and Nrooke Retkowski plated two runs three plays later to put the hosts in control. Rabuck, however, entered the game in the bottom of the first and hurled four and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief to keep Wesley off the scoreboard.

With Rabuck in control of the circle, the Widener offense then came to life and most notably exploded to score seven runs in the fourth to seize the lead. Junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) smashed a two-run single to left field to put the Pride up for good, and then came home for the final run of the big inning on a hit by freshman Jamie Gosslein (Abington, Pa.). Sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.) then added insurance by homering to left in the final frame.

Rabuck earned her first win of the season for Widener by throwing four and two-thirds scoreless frames. She allowed four hits, struck out four and did not issue a walk. She also went 2-for-4 from the plate. Horvath picked up her first save of the season by throwing two shutout innings. She yielded two hits and did not issue any free passes to first. Lily Engel was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs, including six earned, during three and one-third innings of work.

Widener Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Stevenson

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 19, 2017) – Senior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) drove in three runs and classmate Donovan Davis (Wallingford, Pa.) pitched six more scoreless innings to help lead the Widener University baseball team to an 11-0 victory over Stevenson in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Gallaudet’s Hoy Field. The Mustangs rallied to win the opener by a 3-2 score to earn the split.

McDonough opened the scoring in the third inning of the nightcap by doubling down the line in left to send home classmate Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) and sophomore Nick D’Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.). Sophomore Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) then hit an RBI single through the left side an inning later, and senior Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly center in the sixth to give the Pride a 4-0 cushion to work with.

Widener then put the game away by exploding for seven runs on seven hits in the sixth inning. Batting with the bases loaded and nobody out, Elfreth opened the floodgates by belting a two-run single to left field. The first out was finally recorded on the next play, but a fielder’s choice that saw Elfreth get tagged out at third still allowed the Pride to pad their lead. Sophomore Brennan Taylor (Maple Shade, N.J.) then drew a bases-loaded walk to plate senior Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) and make it 10-0, and D’Alessandro hit an RBI single to short to produce the final outcome.

Davis earned the win on the mound for Widener to improve his record to a perfect 3-0 this spring. He allowed just three hits, struck out four and issued only one walk over six frames and has not thrown 14 straight scoreless innings. Stevenson’s James Wiercinski took the loss and dropped to 1-3 for yielding eight hits and four runs, which were all earned, in four and two-thirds innings of work.

Widener also built up a 2-0 lead in the opener by scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Senior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, N.J.) blasted an RBI double to score Healey and then came home on a DeBellis single to left center.

Stevenson (6-7, MAC Commonwealth 1-1), however, battled back and evened the score in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of RBI hits coming off the bats of Connor Wasil and John D’Aquan. Barnett gunned down the potential go-ahead run at home for the inning’s third out, but the Mustangs were able to take the lead an inning later by capitalizing on two Pride errors in the infield. Kerb reached on a defensive miscue to start the inning and came home with two outs on a bad throw. Widener could not get anything going in the top of the seventh and were dealt their first loss of the season in conference play.

Dan Williams earned the win for Stevenson and improved to 2-0 by going the distance on the mound. He surrendered six hits and two runs, which were both earned, and fanned two while not issuing a walk. Joey Zettlemoyer was tagged with the tough loss for giving up the winning run in the sixth inning.

Widener (7-5, MAC Commonwealth 1-1) and Stevenson will play the rubber match of the three-game series at the Maplezone Sports Institute tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Widener Baseball Wins Rubber Match Over Stevenson in Walk-off Fashion

ASTON, Pa. (March 20, 2017) - Senior Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) continued his torrid start by blasting a walk-off double to help lead the Widener University baseball team to a 4-3 comeback victory over Stevenson in the rubber match of a three-game series on Monday evening at the Maplezone Sports Institute.

With senior Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) on the bump, Stevenson took advantage of two Pride errors in the top of the second to move ahead by a 2-0 score. After Matthew Kerb reached on an infield error, Widener thought it recorded the second out of the frame when Brady Kessle hit a grounder which was routinely fielded by Enos and second base and flipped over to senior Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) at first. However, catcher’s interference was called on the play to allow the Mustangs to have two runners on base. Jake Dimon then singled down the line in right to plate both of his teammates.

Widener quickly responded and cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when sophomore Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) came home from third base on a botched attempt to catch classmate Brennan Taylor (Maple Shade, N.J.) in a rundown between first and second. Three innings later, senior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) then tied the score by wheeling his way home on a ball that came off the bat of Healey.

Stevenson (6-8, MAC Commonwealth 1-2) regained the lead in the seventh when Connor Wasil hit a sacrifice fly which was deep enough to plate Kerb, but Widener once again fought back to eventually earn another thrilling victory. Junior Mike Garofolo (Pitman, N.J.) tied the game in the eighth by reaching on a pinch-hit single to first base in which the ball barely stayed in fair territory, and Enos blasted a long double that sailed over the head of the Mustang right fielder with one out to plate senior Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) and give the Pride the series win in walk-off fashion.

Senior Elliott Snyder (Mountain Top, Pa.) picked up the victory for Widener by throwing a scoreless ninth and inducing three groundouts. Stevenson’s Matt Phillips suffered the loss and dropped to 0-3 on the spring after surrendering five hits and two runs, which were both earned, in one and one-third innings of work.

Widener (8-5, MAC Commonwealth 2-1) is slated to face Swarthmore tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Widener Baseball Rallies to Earn 6-5 Win Over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (March 21, 2017) – Junior Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) went 4-for-5 and drove in the run which would prove to be the difference in leading the Widener University baseball team to a 6-5 comeback victory over Swarthmore on Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore (6-9) went ahead in the first inning on an RBI single by Conor Elliott and doubled its lead when Jared Gillen hit a solo shot over the wall in left center in the fourth frame. Starting pitcher Sawyer Lake, meanwhile, stood tall on the mound by only allowing Widener to record one hit through the first four innings of play.

The Pride, however, shook off the slow start and responded by scoring three times in the fifth. Seymour got the hit brigade going with a double to center, and freshman Dylan Peiffer (Allentown, Pa.) then came through by doubling three plays later to plate a pair of runs and tie the score at 2-2. Sophomore Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) then singled to drive in classmate Dylan Morrissette (Telford, Pa.) for the go-ahead run.

Even though Swarthmore found a way to tie the game up in the sixth, Widener answered back in the seventh thanks to heads-up baserunning. Seniors Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) and Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) each reached first base after striking out swinging on passed balls charged to the Garnet catcher, which allowed two runners to cross the plate to make it 5-3.

Widener (9-5) then went ahead 6-4 in the ninth on a Seymour RBI single before having to hold off a resilient Garnet team in the bottom of the final frame. Swarthmore struck back and was able to cut the deficit in half and make things interesting when AJ Liu hit a deep sacrifice to center, which also allowed the potential tying run to advance to third and the winning tally to reach second. The Pride’s Elliot Snyder (Mountain Top, Pa.), however, got out of the major jam by inducing a routine ball hit to Enos at second base for the game’s final out.

Junior Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) picked up the victory for Widener and improved his record to 2-1 this season. He allowed four hits and three runs while also fanning three in three and one-third innings of relief. Snyder, who earned the win in yesterday’s comeback victory over Stevenson, picked up his second save of the spring by recording the last two outs. Swarthmore’s James Rutledge was tagged with the tough loss and fell to 0-2 for surrendering two unearned runs and two hits over one and two-thirds frames. He also struck out four and issued one walk.

Widener Softball Sweeps Away Gwynedd Mercy

CHESTER, Pa. (March 24, 2017) – Sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.) scattered a combined five hits, which included going yard twice, and drove in six runs in leading the Widener University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Gwynedd Mercy on Friday evening. The Pride won the opener by a 12-1 score in six innings before triumphing by a 9-3 decision in the nightcap.

Gwynedd Mercy (4-8) plated the first run of the opener on a home run that came off the bat of Nikki Canfield in the top of the second, but the Pride quickly responded by scoring three times in the bottom half of the same frame. After junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) singled and advanced to second when senior Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, Rogers blasted a three-run homer to put the hosts ahead.

Widener (8-4) then followed up by scoring seven times on five hits in the bottom of the third, and Rogers went yard again in the fourth to close out the scoring with her fifth and sixth runs batted in during the contest. Reliever Devin Coyne (Chesapeake, Va.) then retired the Griffins in order in the top of the fifth to end the game early due to the eight-run rule.

Junior Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) picked up the victory for Widener and improved her record to 3-1 after allowing just three hits and one run, which was earned, in three innings of work due in the shortened game. She also struck out five and did not issue a walk. Alexis Gartner of Gwynedd Mercy suffered the loss and dropped to 1-4 by being lit up for seven hits and eight runs, which were all earned, while lasting just two and one-third frames.

Widener plated five runs in the bottom of the second inning and never trailed in the nightcap. Senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) slapped a single with the bases loaded to put the Pride on the board before freshman Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.) doubled the lead by coming home on a wild pitch. Senior Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.), junior Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) and Sterling added RBI singles to pad the team’s lead in the same frame.

After surrendering a run in the top of the third, Widener scored once in each of the next four frames to pull away. Benozich knocked out her first career home run off the scoreboard in left in the fifth to make it 8-1 at the time, and Sterling rifled a double down the line in left to close out the scoring.

Horvath earned the win in the circle for Widener and improved to 3-1 on the spring by tossing five strong innings in which she gave up three hits and one run which was unearned. Gwynedd Mercy’s Alyssa Morales went the distance and was charged with yielding 12 hits and nine runs, which were all earned, over six frames.

Widener, which has won six straight games, will continue its homestand when it opens up Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action against Stevenson on Sunday, March 26 at 2 p.m.

Widener Softball Sweeps Stevenson to Extend Winning Streak to Eight Straight Games

CHESTER, Pa. (March 26, 2017) – Junior Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) and senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) each picked up a win in the circle while combining for four hits in leading the Widener University softball team to a convincing twinbill sweep of Stevenson on Sunday afternoon. The Pride won the opener, 5-1, and captured the nightcap by an 8-0 decision in five innings.

Widener (10-4, MAC Commonwealth 2-0) quickly got on the board in the opener by scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Horvath, who reached base on a leadoff single, scored on a ball that was rifled through the left side by junior Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) before classmate Taylor Allen (North East, Md.) drew a bases-loaded walk on a full count to double the advantage. Junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) then homered to start the third, and Allen sent home senior Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.) by grounding out to third with runners on the corners.

Rabuck, meanwhile, was in full control of the circle after yielding a leadoff double to Naomi Fields in the top of the second. The Pride junior retired 14 consecutive Mustang batters until Tiffany McKee went yard to straightaway center in the sixth to give the visitors their only run of the afternoon. Widener got the run back in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single by senior Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Rabuck pitched a solid seventh to allow the hosts to come away with the four-run win.

Widener’s Rabuck picked up her fourth straight win in the circle after giving up just four hits and one run, which was earned, while going the distance. She matched a career high with seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Brooke Steinbach suffered the loss and dropped to 0-5 after surrendering seven hits and five runs, which were all earned, in six innings of work.

The Pride got to Stevenson hurler Jasmyn Ogletree early and often in the nightcap while Horvath was in the process of throwing a gem from the circle. Rabuck singled up the middle to score Sterling, who reached on an error to start the inning, and freshman Jamie Gosselin (Abington, Pa.) followed up with a two-run single to the gap in left center to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage. Horvath then singled to first to plate a fourth run, and Gosselin came home on a groundout to first by Burt.

Stevenson (3-9, MAC Commonwealth 0-4) had a golden opportunity to score in the top of the fourth by loading the bases with two outs. Horvath, however, got out of the major jam by striking out Nicole Dell. The Pride then tacked on two runs in their half of the fourth, beginning when freshman Carli Benozich came home on a wild pitch. DelRomano followed with a hard RBI single through the left side, and Horvath retired the Mustangs in order in the fifth to end the game early due to the eight-run rule.

Horvath earned the win the circle by throwing a three-hit shutout to improve her record to 4-1 this season. She also fanned two and issued just one walk. Ogletree was dealt the setback after giving up eight runs, including six earned, and eight hits in four innings of work.

Widener, which has won eight straight games, will next visit Eastern on Tuesday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m.

Widener Softball Splits Doubleheader With Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. (March 30, 2017) – Senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) threw another shutout in the circle and scored the deciding run in leading the Widener University softball team to a 1-0 victory over Eastern in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles rallied to win by a 9-8 decision earlier in the day to help salvage the split.

After dropping the opener in a game dominated by offense on both sides, the Pride got the only run they would need during the nightcap in the third inning of action. Horvath hit a leadoff single to the pitcher, stole second and third, and then came home on a groundout to third by Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.).

Eastern (3-11) tried to get the run back, but Horvath remained dominant in the circle for the remainder of the contest. Widener’s senior hurler only allowed the Eagles to advance one runner safely to second with the team clinging to a one-run lead, and the Pride were able to avenge the earlier setback and escape with the one-run victory.

Horvath, who blanked Stevenson this past Sunday, had another masterful performance in the circle and won her fifth consecutive start for Widener. She yielded just four hits, which were all singles, while recording two strikeouts and issuing only one walk to improve her ledger to 6-1 this spring. Eastern’s Haleigh Williams was charged with the tough-luck loss and fell to 0-3 despite surrendering seven hits and one run, which was earned, over seven innings of work.

Widener burst out to an 8-0 lead in the opener and appeared to be in full control by scoring twice in the first and third frames as well as four times in the fourth. Junior Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) reached on an error to drive in senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) for the first time and then came home on a single off the bat of classmate Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) to get the offense going. Batting with two runners in scoring position, sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.) later completed the hot stretch by blasting a two-run triple to plate Sterling and DelRomano.

Eastern, however, stormed back with the heart of its order doing the damage. The Eagles most notably scored six times in the sixth inning and scored the go-ahead run on a Jess Snader single down the line in left.

The Pride had an opportunity to tie or take the lead by placing a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the seventh when Rogers advanced to third on a wild pitch and sophomore Amanda Sharp (Churchville, Pa.) moved ahead to second on a passed ball. Melissa Irick, however, induced a groundout on the next play to end the game.

Irick picked up the victory for Eastern and improved to 1-3 this spring. She allowed eight hits and only three earned runs while striking out four and issuing five walks. Widener’s Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) suffered the loss and dropped her record to 5-2 by giving up three hits and an unearned run in thre and two-thirds innings of relief.

Widener (13-5), which has won 11 of its last 12 games, resumes conference play when it visits #9-ranked Messiah for a twinbill on Saturday, Apr. 1 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Sam Smith’s Buzzer Beater for Widener Wins GEICO National Play of the Year Award

CHICAGO, Ill. (March 27, 2017) – Thanks to outstanding support through online voting by the Widener University community and its fans on Facebook, a buzzer-beating 3-point basket by junior men's basketball player Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) in an 89-78 overtime victory against Albright on Jan. 21 was named the 2017 GEICO Play of the Year. The announcement was made in front of a national television audience on the CBS Best of College Basketball Special yesterday afternoon.

Smith's shot, which was also named the Middle Atlantic Conference Play of the Week on Jan. 24, was among the first four plays considered during an opening round of voting in late January and early February.

After receiving the most votes, the play advanced to a final round of voting earlier this month and was matched up against other weekly winners from Wooster, Salisbury, Lubbock Christian and Saint John's (Minn.). The Widener community and its fans flocked to Facebook again to vote so Smith's buzzer beater could claim the ultimate prize.

Widener Softball Salvages Split of Twinbill With Nationally-Ranked Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2017) – Sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.) hit a go-ahead RBI single and senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) won her sixth straight start in the circle to propel the Widener University softball team to a 10-4 victory over #9-ranked Messiah in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons held off the Pride in the opener, 4-2, to earn the split.

With the victory in the nightcap, Widener snapped Messiah’s 46-game winning streak in the regular season against Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponents. The last time the Falcons lost a league matchup was on Apr. 16, 2014 when they fell to Lebanon Valley by a 4-0 decision. The win was also the school’s second triumph over a nationally-ranked opponent this past week, as the Widener baseball team defeated #16 TCNJ on Wednesday, March 29 at home.

Widener found itself trailing by a 2-1 score in the nightcap before the bats came alive to plate nine runs in the last two innings. Rogers first hit a bases-loaded single through the left side, which plated junior Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) and freshman Jamie Gosselin (Abington, Pa.), and junior Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) also provided a spark by belting a pinch-hit double down the line in left to tack on two more runs. Rabuck came home when Horvath singled to left to cap a six-run frame and make it 7-2 in favor of the visitors heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Even though Messiah tacked on another run to bring the margin down to four, the Pride’s offense stayed red hot and added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.), who reached base safely by doubling to right, scored on a throwing error before freshman Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.) sent in Rogers on a sacrifice fly. An RBI single by sophomore Maddie Kienbaum (Ashburn, Va.) capped the scoring for Widener, which shook off a solo homer by Erin Cressman in the bottom of the seventh to earn the key win.

Horvath improved to 7-1 for Widener by going the distance in the circle. She yielded 11 hits, four runs and fanned one batter. Messiah’s Madelyn Yannetti was dealt her first loss of the season after giving up four runs, including three earned, and four hits. She also issued two walks and was chased away from the game after five innings.

In the opener, Messiah (19-4, MAC Commonwealth 7-1) built up a 4-0 lead by scoring one run in the third frame and three more in the fourth. Amanda Jones hit a sacrifice fly to put the Falcons on the board, and Sydney Boreman gave the hosts some breathing room by hitting an RBI double to right center. Shannon Denny then belted a two-run single up the middle to provide additional insurance.

Widener, however, slashed the margin in half when Rogers blasted a two-run homer in the fifth and most notably had an opportunity to tie and take the lead in the seventh with runners on first and second and two outs. But after Sterling reached on an error to represent the tying run, hurler Carrie Fix was able to induce a groundout to end the game.

Messiah’s Fix picked up the win and improved to 7-2 this spring after surrendering two runs, which were both earned, and six hits. Rabuck suffered the loss and fell to 5-3 for Widener, which stranded nine runners on the basepaths in the contest. She gave up six hits and four runs, including one earned, while striking out three and walking just one.

Widener (14-6, MAC Commonwealth 3-1) continues conference play when it hosts Arcadia for a twinbill on Wednesday, Apr. 5 beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Widener Women’s Track & Field Registers Collegiate-Best Marks at Danny Curran Invitational

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2017) – Sophomore Allison Reuter (Clayton, N.J.) registered two collegiate-best marks in a pair of throwing events to lead the Widener University women’s outdoor track & field team at the Danny Curran Invitational over the weekend.

Reuter was among several returners for the Pride to record their best performances as collegians at the three-day meet. She began the weekend by posting a runner-up mark of 158-feet, 7-inches in the hammer throw, which was a personal best by more than 31 feet and also the top performance by a Middle Atlantic Conference student-athlete this spring. She concluded the meet by finishing fourth in the discus throw with a launch that traveled 123-feet, 9-inches and good for second among conference competitors so far.

Other notable performances in the field events for the program were made by junior Sam Thach (Pennsauken, N.J.) and sophomore Caroline Fitzpatrick (Hammonton, Pa.). Thach registered personal-best marks of 32-0 in the shot put and 102-11 and javelin, respectively, while Fitzpatrick matched the feat in the pole vault by clearing 8-2.75.

On the track, the Pride were led by junior Kaylynne Timmons (Clayton, N.J.) and senior Shae Spicer (Burlington, N.J.). Timmons posted two of the best times in the conference by finishing seventh in the 100-meter dash in 13.00 seconds and completing the 200 in 26.79. Spicer, who was also named the recipient of the Danny Curran Award as the program’s most improved senior, placed eighth in the 10,000-meter run in 39:26.90 and bettered her previous personal-best time by more than a minute. Junior Blair Gelb (West Deptford, N.J.) dropped nearly 19 seconds off her time in the 1,500 and hit the tape in 5:01.73.

Widener plans to send student-athletes to the West Chester Invitational and Sam Howell Distance Meet at Princeton on Friday, Apr. 7.

Widener Men’s Track & Field Competes at Danny Curran Invitational

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2017) – Senior Ernie Pitone (Springfield, Pa.) and sophomore Evan Sing (Media, Pa.) each registered a top-10 national mark to lead the Widener University men’s outdoor track & field team at the Danny Curran Invitational over the weekend.

Pitone, who recently earned All-America laurels in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, made a big splash in his outdoor debut by winning the 10,000 in 31:27 on Friday evening. The time outdistanced the rest of the field by more than 16 seconds and ranks ninth in the country.

Sing, who has broken and rebroken the school record in the javelin throw since his arrival last year, was equally as impressive as Pitone in his premier event. The sophomore threw the spear 199-feet, 7-inches to finish third overall with a mark that also ranks ninth nationally.

Other notable performances were made by senior Daniel Herbster (Garnet Valley, Pa.), Jabari Mani (Stratford, N.J.) and junior Malik Dixon (Rockaway, N.J.) in the field. Herbster registered three-top finishes by recording marks of 132-9 in the hammer throw, 44-9.5 in the shot put and 131-4 in the discus throw. Mani placed third in the hammer throw by notching a toss that sailed 152-5, which ranks first in the Middle Atlantic Conference this season, and Dixon tied for third in the pole vault by clearing 13-9.25. On the track, sophomore Sean Stovall (Springfield, Pa.) punched in a time of 57.30 seconds in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.

Widener plans to send student-athletes to the West Chester Invitational and Sam Howell Distance Meet at Princeton on Friday, Apr. 7.

Widener Baseball Defeats Misericordia to Extend Win Streak to 11 Straight Games

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 5, 2017) – Seniors Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) and Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) combined to drive in seven runs to help lead the Widener University baseball team to a 9-5 victory over Misericordia in a non-conference battle between two reigning champions.

The Pride drew first blood when Enos drilled a two-run single to right center in the bottom of the first, but the visiting Cougars struck right back by tallying three runs in the top of the second. Gavin Sudano tied the game with a single to right center, and a slash through the left side off the bat of Kenny Jarema to plated a go-ahead run.

Widener, however, rallied to score three times in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back. Senior Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) ignited the offense with a leadoff single down the line in left and scored the equalizer when junior Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) reached on a fielder’s choice. Back-to-back RBI singles by Kyle Lowery and Barnett then put the hosts up for good.

Trailing 7-4 in the top of the eighth, Misericordia (11-6) continued to hang around and attempted to slice into the deficit when Santo Guinta came up with two runners in scoring position. Guinta appeared to hit a sacrifice fly which was caught in deep center by senior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) for the second out. However, Tyler Holzapfel was caught red-handed by the umpire for leaving second base early for the third out, and the extra run the Cougars thought they initially had would not count.

After Widener used the momentum to add a pair of insurance runs on an Enos double to the power alley in right center, Misericordia did not go away easily and continued to threaten to score in the final frame by loading the bases with one out. Jarema looked to slash into the margin by slicing the ball down the left field line, but Widener’s Bob Barnett dove to make a web gem of a catch. The Cougars only got one run on the board on what was limited to a sacrifice fly thanks to the key defensive play, and Barnett came through again by tracking down another fly ball for the game’s final out.

Junior Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) picked up the victory for Widener and improved to 4-1 this season after surrendering seven hits and three runs, which were all earned, in five innings of work. Misericordia’s Zach Mason was tagged with the loss and fell to 0-1 by giving up five hits and five runs, which were all earned, over three and two-thirds frames.

Widener (16-6), which has won 11 games in a row, will look to stay red hot with first place on the line when it visits nationally-ranked Alvernia to begin a three-game weekend series on Friday, Apr. 7 at 3:30 p.m.

Widener Men’s Lacrosse’s Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short Against #12 Stevenson

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 8, 2017)– The Widener University men's lacrosse team made a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter which came up just shy in a 10-8 setback against nationally-ranked Stevenson on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

Widener trailed by a 9-5 score through three quarters before netting three unanswered. After junior Chris Drake scored back-to-back markers, freshman Paz Gasmondi (West Deptford, N.J.) received a pass from sophomore Shane Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) and slipped the ball past Mustang netminder Ross Dinan to slash the margin down to 9-8 with 1:58 remaining in regulation.

Stevenson’s Justin Burnette, however, won the crucial ensuing faceoff and Kyle D’Onofrio fired home his fourth goal of the game to suck the wind out of the Pride’s sails. Senior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) attempted one more shot which was saved by Dinan, whose squad then ran out the clock to come away with the win.

Even though the Mustangs scored the first three goals of the game and went on several runs, Widener never went away and continued to chip away at every deficit it faced. The hosts brought the margin down to a single goal on three occasions after falling behind, beginning when Schulte and junior Mitchell Phillips (Wyomissing, Pa.) scored back-to-back goals to make it 3-2 in favor of the Mustangs through the first quarter of play.

Widener, which trailed 6-3 at the break, opened the scoring in the second half when junior Liam O’Donnell (Media, Pa.) netted his first career marker following a key defensive stop on the other end by Jason Higgins (Philadelphia, Pa.). Gismondi then netted a man-up goal to make it a one-possession game, but the Mustangs closed the quarter on a 3-0 run. The Pride continued to be relentless and stormed back to make it a one-possession game by the waning minutes of the final quarter, but the attempted rally would end just a few goals short and kept the Mustangs unbeaten in conference play.

Kyle D’Onofrio tallied a game-high five points on four goals and an assist to lead the way for Stevenson (8-3, MAC Commonwealth 5-0), which outshot Widener by a count of 48-32 in the contest. JT Thelen netted a hat trick, while Dinan made seven saves between the pipes, picked up six ground balls and caused a turnover.

Sophomore goalie Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) made 15 saves, including five in the final quarter, to help keep Widener competitive throughout the game. Taylor and Drake each factored into three goals, and junior Anthony Paone (Warrington, Pa.) won 13 of his 21 faceoff attempts.

Widener (5-6, MAC Commonwealth 2-2) will be back in action when it visits Arcadia on Saturday, Apr. 15 at 1:00 p.m.

dener Softball Sweeps Hood on the Road

FREDERICK, Md. (Apr. 8, 2017) – Junior Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) hurled her second straight shutout in the opener and classmate Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) blasted a three-run homer in the nightcap to help the Widener University softball team sweep a twinbill on the road against Hood on Saturday afternoon. The Pride won by scores of 1-0 and 7-3.

Widener scored the only run it needed during the opener in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Jamie Gosselin (Abington, Pa.) singled to begin the frame and was sacrificed over to second by DelRomano. The designated player then came home two plays later on a single to right field by sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.).

Rabuck, who only allowed two Blazers to reach base safely while pitching with the lead, picked up her second straight shutout victory for Widener and improved her record to 7-3. She allowed five hits, struck out six and walked only one and ended the game having pitched 18 straight scoreless frames. Hood’s Kayli Paugh took the loss and dropped to 6-4 after giving up seven hits and one run, which was earned, and registering two strikeouts.

Hood (13-10, MAC Commonwealth 4-6) opened the scoring by plating two runs in the bottom of the second in the nightcap, as Roo Saglimbeni hit a leadoff homer and Jasmine Webster belted an RBI single up the middle. Widener, however, quickly answered by scoring three times in the top of the third. Rogers most notably singled in Gosselin for the go-ahead run.

After tacking on another run in the fifth, the Pride broke the game open by tacking on three more runs in the seventh. Seniors Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) hit back-to-back bunt singles and were plated when DelRomano went yard to left which made it 7-2. Hood’s Shelby Alcorn was able to blast a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, but Horvath was able to keep the Blazers off the board the rest of the way and induced a groundout to end the game.

Horvath earned the win in the circle and moved ahead to 8-2 this season in the circle for Widener. She yielded seven hits and three runs, which were all earned, while striking out five and issuing only one walk. Hood’s Sophia Leaman suffered the loss and fell to 5-3 for allowing 12 hits and seven runs, including six earned, while recording five strikeouts.

Widener (17-7, MAC Commonwealth 6-2), which has won four of its last five conference games, returns to action when it hosts Albright on Thursday, Apr. 13 for a twinbill beginning at 4:00 p.m.

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 11, 2017) – The Widener University women’s lacrosse team dropped a non-conference game to Swarthmore by a 14-4 score on Tuesday evening at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener opened the scoring when senior Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) found freshman Melanie Bert (Oceanside, N.Y.) at the 28:19 mark, but Swarthmore responded by rattling off four unanswered and never surrendered the lead. Briiana Narzikul converted a free position shot to make it 8-3 in favor of the Garnet at recess.

Swarthmore (7-4) netted six straight goals to balloon the lead up to 11. Elizabeth Wainwright scored three straight times before Chiang scored the last marker for the visitors on a free position with 14:36 left. abuck’s No-Hitter & Gosselin’s Grand Slam Propel Widener Softball Past Albright

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2017) – Junior Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) threw a no-hitter in the opener and freshman Jamie Gosselin (Abington, Pa.) hit a walk-off grand slam in the nightcap as the Widener University softball team swept a doubleheader against Albright in thrilling fashion on Thursday evening. The Pride won by scores of 5-0 and 6-4.

Widener’s Rabuck and Albright’s Riley Gerenda were locked in a pitcher’s duel until the Pride broke loose in the bottom of the fifth. After stealing second and third, senior Ally Horvath came home for the game’s first run when the Lions attempted to catch her in a rundown between second and third. With two runners still on base, junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) then sent a shot over the fence in left to pad the Widener lead. The hosts then tacked on another run in the sixth for additional insurance when Horvath singled in freshman Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.).

Rabuck earned the victory and improved to 8-3 at the time by throwing her first career no-hitter. She struck out nine and only allowed one Lion batter to reach base when she Regina Milburn was hit by a pitch in the top of the first. Gerenda was tagged with the loss by surrendering five hits and four runs, which were all earned, while registering four strikeouts and issuing four walks.

Albright (9-11, MAC Commonwealth 4-6) got on the board first in the nightcap and took a 2-0 lead in the second by capitalizing on a pair of Pride errors. Widener, however, started to climb back and sliced the deficit in half when Gosselin hit an RBI double off the top of the fence in center field. Benozich then cut another two-run deficit down to one by homering to left.

Even though the visitors moved ahead by two when Kelly Cembrale hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth, Widener continued to battle and would not go away. Trailing by two runs with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Benozich drew a walk and senior Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.) sliced a single to left to get the offense going. Horvath then found a hole through the right side to load the bases and set the stage for Gosselin, who provided the heroics by blasting a walk-off grand slam and first career home run to complete the sweep for the Pride.

Rabuck, who entered the game in the sixth inning, picked up her second win of the day in the circle and moved ahead to 9-3 this spring. She gave up one hit and recorded a strikeout in one and one-thirds innings of relief to extend her scoreless streak to more than 26 consecutive frames. The Widener softball team just won its first NCAA Regional game in program history (on its first try) by defeating SUNY Cortland by a 3-0 score this afternoon.

Widener Softball Opens NCAA Regional Action With 3-0 Triumph Over SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. (May 12, 2017) – Senior Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) hurled a shutout in the circle and junior Taylor Allen (North East, Md.) drove in two runs to help lead the Widener University softball team to a 3-0 victory over SUNY Cortland in the opening NCAA Regional game for both schools on Friday afternoon at Dragon Field.

Widener got off to a quick start and scored first in the top of the opening frame. Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) hit a bunt single, stole second and then came home when pitcher Jamie Lachall airmailed her throw to first baseman on a bunt by freshman Jamie Gosselin (Abington, Pa.).

While senior Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) was in the process of keeping the Cortland offense in check, Widener was able to tack on two more runs in the top of the fourth when junior Taylor Allen (North East, Md.) blasted a two-out single to the power alley in left. The catcher’s second hit of the afternoon plated junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) and freshman Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and eventually produced the final outcome.

Schengrund picked up the victory in the circle for Widener and improved to 6-2 this season by throwing a three-hit shutout. She struck out three and issued two walks while becoming the first pitcher to blank the Red Dragons since they lost a 1-0 game to Rowan on May 14, 2016 at the NCAA Regionals. Jamie Lachall of Cortland (29-13) suffered the loss and dropped her record to 12-7 after giving up six hits and three runs, including two earned, while fanning five and issuing one walk.

Widener (27-11) will next face the winner of today’s second game between nationally-ranked Messiah and Johnson & Wales tomorrow afternoon at 11:00 a.m.

Widener softball's historic season continued today with a 2-1 victory over Messiah at the NCAA Regional in Cortland, N.Y. It was the team's third straight win over the nationally-ranked Falcons and second in a row in the postseason.

The Pride, who are making their first NCAA postseason appearance in program history, advanced to the championship round and will play their next game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.

Widener Softball Holds Off Nationally-Ranked Messiah to Advance to Regional Championship Round

CORTLAND, N.Y. (May 13, 2017) – Senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) won her third postseason game in the circle by yielding just four hits as the Widener University softball team defeated #12 Messiah by a 2-1 score to advance to the championship round of its NCAA Regional on Saturday afternoon at Dragon Field.

Messiah (35-9), which was the visiting team on the scoreboard, threatened to strike early by loading the bases with just one out in the top of the first. Freshman shortstop Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.), however, gunned down Samantha Esper at home and junior Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) tagged out Amber Bingaman on her way to second to get the Pride out of the major jam.

Widener (28-11) had its first major opportunity to get on the board in the bottom of the third by loading up the bags with nobody out. Junior Taylor Allen (North East, Md.) ripped a single up the middle, advanced to second on a bunt single by senior Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.) and then reached third safely on a fielder’s choice. Allen was thrown out at home in her attempt to put the Pride ahead on another fielder’s choice, but DelRomano was able to work up a walk on a full count to send in Burt for the game’s first run.

After dodging a bullet in the opening frame, Horvath did just the same thing in the top of the fifth as the Falcons once again loaded the bases with one out and failed to send a runner home. Benozich caught a popup in short left while also keeping Carrie Fix honest at third, and DelRomano scooped up a hard grounder to get the Pride out of the inning.

Widener then used the momentum to double its lead in the bottom of the frame by playing small ball and capitalizing on two infield errors. Freshman Jamie Gosselin (Abington, Pa.) first bunted to the left side and reached on a fielding error and then advanced to third when a ball fielded cleanly by shortstop Amanda Jones was thrown away. The left fielder then came across the dish on a successful squeeze play executed by junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.).

Messiah was able to get on the board in the top of the seventh when Erin Cressman crushed a solo home run over the scoreboard in left with two down, but that was as close as the perennial powerhouse program would come. Horvath settled down again and induced a flyout to dead center which was easily caught by Sterling to end the game.

Horvath picked up her third postseason victory for Widener and went the distance to improve her record to 11-3 this spring. She allowed four hits and one run while striking out three. Messiah’s Madelyn Yannetti took the loss and dropped to 17-5 after giving up five hits and two runs, including one earned, over six frames. She fanned two and issued one loss.

The Pride, who have now beaten Messiah three times in a row, will next play against an opponent to be determined in the championship round on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.

Widener Softball Ends Historic Season at NCAA Regional Against SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. (May 13, 2017) – After winning five straight postseason contests, the Widener University softball team concluded its most memorable season in school history in the championship round of its NCAA Regional on Sunday at Dragon Field. The Pride fell to host SUNY Cortland by scores of 10-2 in five innings and 7-2 in a winner-take-all game.

Cortland (33-13) caught fire in the second inning of the opener by scoring six times with two outs and never looked back. Even though she was down to her last strike, Ericka Sadowski sliced a bases-clearing double and advanced to third when the ball was misplayed by the Widener defense. Andrea Schoonmaker and Rosie Phillips then followed with back-to-back doubles to extend the margin to five, and Nikki Barbato found a hole to bring home another run before being tagged out by relief pitcher Devin Coyne (Chesapeake, Va.).

The Dragons continued to pound the ball in the middle innings to end the game early due to the eight-run rule. Skyler Hoyt most notably went yard for the third time of the tournament to make it 8-0 at the time and put the game out of reach, as a pair of RBI singles by sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.) would not be enough to overcome the large deficit.

Cortland’s Jamie Lachall picked up the victory and improved to 13-8 by allowing five hits and two runs, which were both earned, while going the distance. She also struck out four and issued two walks. Senior Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) of Widener was tagged with the loss and dropped to 6-3 after surrendering six runs, which were all earned, and four hits over one and two-thirds frames.

The Red Dragons drew first blood in the second game, as Barbato hit a sacrifice fly to center that was deep enough to score Schoonmaker before Kaleigh Churchill sent a rocket down the line in left to double the margin.

Following a rain delay which lasted more than an hour, Cortland’s bats stayed hot and the hosts tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third by having four straight batters reach base. Kelly O’Gorman did most of the damage by blasting a two-run double to left center, and the hosts added extra insurance in the middle innings to advance to next week’s NCAA Super Regional against St. John Fisher.

Alexandra Flint earned the win in the circle for Cortland and improved her record to 11-4. She yielded nine hits and two runs, which were both earned, fanned six and issued one walk in five and two-thirds innings of work. Widener’s Horvath suffered the loss after giving up seven hits and five runs, including four earned, and recorded a pair of strikeouts over two frames.

During the postgame ceremony, junior Taylor Allen (North East, Md.) and senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) were recognized as members of the all-tournament team. Allen batted .571 by going 4-for-7 from the plate. She also drove in three runs, recorded a .727 on-base percentage and slugged at a .571 clip. Horvath was the Pride’s winning pitcher in yesterday’s 2-1 Messiah victory, batted .308 and stole three bases on as many attempts.

Widener (28-13) completed its most historic season in school history by winning its first Middle Atlantic Commonwealth Conference title and making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals. The graduating senior class consisting of Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.), Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.), Bree VanReenen (Elkton, Md.), Coyne, Horvath and Schengrund also helped the program win 105 games over the past four seasons and make an appearance in the conference tournament every year.

Subject: College Softball Final: Widener 2, #12 Messiah 1 (NCAA Regional)

Subject: SB Final: Widener 3, SUNY Cortland 0 (NCAA Regional)
