Widener Men’s Basketball Holds Off Ursinus to Earn 87-72 Victory

CHESTER, Pa. (Nov. 26, 2016) – Senior John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) scored a season-high 17 points and dished out four assists in leading the Widener University men’s basketball team to an 87-72 victory over Ursinus on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

Widener, which never trailed in the contest, burst loose early and built up a double-digit lead in less than five minutes when Sambo converted a layup to make it 12-2. Fender then nailed a 3-pointer to put the Pride up by a 17-4 score before setting up sophomore Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) from downtown to give the hosts a 43-15 cushion and their largest lead of the frame. The Pride stayed in cruise control and got a trey from freshman Connor Laverty (Upper Township, N.J.) in the waning seconds to take a commanding 48-23 advantage into the break.

Ursinus (3-1), however, did not give up and chipped away at the large deficit throughout the second half. After falling behind by 33 when sophomore Nick Jackson (Rockville, Md.) zinged the strings from long range, the Bears stormed back by netting 33 points over the next 9:49 and came within single digits on a steal by Matt Knowles that resulted in a layup by the team’s top scorer at the other end. The Bears then called a timeout while just trailing 78-69 with 4:08 remaining in regulation.

But despite being challenged in the second half, Widener would not let the visitors come any closer the rest of the way. Ursinus turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions by traveling twice and losing the ball on another play to be kept at bay. The Pride also hit eight free throws in the final two minutes to come away with the 15-point win.

Fender was a spark off the bench for Widener by netting 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including 1-of-3 from long range, and 6-of-7 from the line. He also added four helpers and three boards. Sambo led five players in twin figures with 18 points while also contributing seven rebounds and three blocks. McMahon had a strong game with 11 points, five boards, four assists and four steals.

Ursinus was paced by Knowles in the losing effort. The senior provided a game-high 25 points with all of his scoring coming in the second half alone. Remi Janicot fell just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Joseph LoStracco netted 11 points in a reserve role.

Widener (3-1) will next host Penn State Brandywine on Monday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.

CHESTER, Pa. (Nov. 28, 2016)- Senior captainKendall Green(Mount Laurel, N.J.) scored 18 points and dished out five assists in leading the Widener University men's basketball team to a convincing 84-58 victory over Penn State Brandywine on Monday evening at the Schwartz Center.

The teams played the beginning of the game evenly and found themselves tied at 5-5, but sophomore Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) broke the deadlock by sinking a jump shot and freshman Elijah Boyd (Germantown, Md.) made a 3-pointer to begin and cap a 9-0 run for the Pride. Widener stayed in control and led by as many as 13 on three occasions in the frame until eventually carrying a 34-25 advantage into the break.

The hosts stayed ahead by twin figures for nearly the second half thanks to shooting 69 percent from the field and holding the opponent to a cold 33.3 percent shooting from the floor over the final 20 minutes. Isaiah Lester converted from downtown to slice the deficit down to 52-43 at the 12:33 mark, but the Pride got a bucket from McMahon and jumped ahead by 20 on a putback by junior Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) with under five minutes remaining. Boyd then added six straight points and classmate Noah Gillian (Ocean City, N.J.) scored his first two baskets as a collegian to solidify the final outcome.

Green netted a game-high 18 points for Widener by shooting a blistering 7-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from long range, and 1-of-2 at the line. He also tallied five rebounds and five helpers along with a steal. Senior John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) continued to be a spark off the bench by netting 16, while Sambo and Boyd scored 11 apiece. Men’s Basketball Falls to Lebanon Valley in Conference Opener

ANNVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 30, 2016) – The Widener University men’s basketball team fell to Lebanon Valley by a 78-55 score in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener for both schools on Wednesday evening at Sorrentino Gymnasium.

The beginning of the game was tightly contested with the teams exchanging the lead seven times. But after junior Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) converted a layup to give the Pride a 9-8 edge at the 13:02 mark, Lebanon Valley got a 3-pointer from Marquis Davis and went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to prompt a Widener timeout. The Pride were unable to make a field goal for a span of 5:42 until freshman Elijah Boyd drove in for an assisted layup and trailed 32-20 at the recess.

After getting a buzzer-beating trey from Ricky Bugg to close out the first half, the Dutchmen came out firing out of the break and built up a 19-point advantage by rattling off seven more unanswered. Sophomore Nick Jackson (Rockville, Md.) put back a missed jumper for the Pride’s first field goal of the frame at 15:36, but the hosts shook it off and extended their lead to as many as 30 on a Brett Gilbert trifecta and eventually ran away with a lopsided victory.

Lebanon Valley (3-3, MAC Commonwealth 1-0) was paced by Andy Orr and Davis in the triumph. Orr fell just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Davis poured in 21 points to lead all scorers.

The Pride got a strong effort from Boyd in the setback. The freshman finished with nine points. Senior Kendall Green (Mount Laurel, N.J.) finished with seven points and four boards.

CHESTER, Pa. (Dec. 3, 2016) – The Widener women’s basketball team fell to Stevenson by an 87-78 score on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

The teams played a tight contest with seven ties and nine lead changes through three quarters of action before the Mustangs used a late surge to pull away. Stevenson led by just a slim 62-59 margin after 30 minutes, but Sarah Tarbert came through with a pair of 3-pointers at the 4:55 and 3:37 marks to give the vistors a 76-67 advantage and break the game open. The reigning conference player of the year then added six more points down the stretch to put the game out reach.

Widener jumped out to a 9-2 lead when freshman Devan Rimmer (Perksasie, Pa.) converted a 3-point field goal, but Stevenson came back and went ahead by a 16-15 score when Tarbert drove in for a layup with 2:54 on the clock. The senior scored the first 16 points for the Mustangs before freshman Angelica Borja (Somerville, N.J.) would hit a trifecta to tie the game at 22s through the first quarter of play.

Junior Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, N.J.) provided a spark off the bench for Widener and nailed one of her six 3-pointers to open the scoring in the second. The guard scored 10 points on four field goals in the quarter, as the Pride led for practically the entire frame and would take a 43-38 advantage into the break.

The third quarter, however, was a seesaw battle with the teams exchanging the lead five times. Widener continued to dial in from downtown and got long range baskets from freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.), junior Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) and Venturelli. But despite the stellar shooting, Stevenson got a key 3-pointer from Kaitlyn VanTash off a feed from Tarbert, and the Mustangs never trailed the rest of the way.

Tarbert exploded for a career-high 49 points for Stevenson (4-2, MAC Commonwealth 1-1) by shooting 21-of-30 from the field, including 2-of-4 from long range, and 5-of-7 at the line. She also corralled 16 rebounds and added five steals, which were both game highs, and dished out three assists. Jonaye Curry scored 12 points.

Widener (2-4, MAC Commonwealth 0-2) was led by Venturelli, who matched a career high with 22 points. She also canned six of her eight shot attempts from long distance. Ireland finished with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, six assists and two swipes.

The Pride will continue conference play when they visit nationally-ranked Albright on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m.

Widener Men’s Basketball Soars Past Stevenson for First Conference Win

CHESTER, Pa. (Dec. 3, 2016) – Sophomore Nick Jackson (Rockville, Md.) poured in 18 points in leading the Widener University men’s basketball team to a 75-61 victory over Stevenson on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

After Kyle Woodbridge opened the scoring on Stevenson’s opening possession, Widener got a 3-pointer from Ryan McMahon followed by a layup from Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) and never trailed again. Freshman Elijah Boyd (Germantown, Md.) drove in for a layup to put the Pride ahead by double figures for the first time at 22-11, and the lead was extended up to 18 on two occasions before the end of the half. McMahon sank a free throw to give the hosts a 45-27 advantage at recess.

Junior captain Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) provided the fireworks and set the tone for the remainder of the game by throwing down a dunk for Widener’s first points of the second half. The junior then converted a layup to give the hosts a commanding 28-point advantage at 69-41 with 7:34 left, which was more than enough insurance for the Pride to run away with the double-digit victory. Sophomore Jalen Howard (Baltimore, Md.) then closed out the scoring in the waning minutes by finishing a pass from Smith.

Jackson netted a game-high 18 points by shooting 8-of-14 from the field and netting a free throw. McMahon and Boyd also reached twin figures with 10 points apiece, while McMahon also dished out three assists and blocked two shots.

Stevenson (1-5, MAC Commonwealth 0-2) got a 10-point effort from Cameron Hayes. The freshman also contributed five rebounds and three assists. Christian Collins provided seven points off the bench.

Widener (5-2, MAC Commonwealth 1-1) continues conference play when it visits Albright on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.

Widener Women’s Basketball Holds Off Lycoming for First Conference Win

CHESTER, Pa. (Dec. 10, 2016) – Junior captain Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) exploded to score a career-high 23 points off the bench in leading the Widener University women’s basketball team to a 78-75 victory over Lycoming in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

After recovering from a slow start, Widener led 51-35 at the break and remained ahead by twin figures throughout the third quarter. Junior Brianna Cullen (Lansdale, Pa.) opened the scoring in the frame for the Pride before freshman Madison Ireland extended the lead up to 18 at 61-43 by sinking a layup with 4:16 left. Senior Aly Furgiuele then grabbed an offensive rebound and found the red-hot Petri for a buzzer-beating jumper to close out the frame.

Despite trailing 67-49 through 30 minutes of action, the Warriors came back and slashed the lead to single digits when Nicole Calella drove in for a layup to make it 73-64 with 3:54 remaining in regulation. The visitors sliced the deficit all the way down to three when Calella found Shelby Mueller for a bucket, but Widener was able to hold off the rally attempt by sinking four shots at the line in the final minute. A 3-point attempt to tie the game and force overtime by Kayla Kline was no good, and the Pride were able to hang on to earn their first conference win.

Widener was paced by Petri, who netted a career-high 23 points by shooting 8-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 2-of-2 at the line in 28 minutes of action. She also smashed her previous scoring mark of 12 points, which occurred against the same opponent last season, and had 14 at the break by most notably sinking all four of her 3-point field goal attempts. Ireland came just shy of posting a double-double by racking up 16 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Deven Rimmer (Perkasie, Pa.) recorded 15 points to go along with four assists and three steals.

Mueller registered a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards to lead the way for Lycoming (6-3, MAC Commonwealth 1-2), which shot just 14-of-30 from the charity stripe in the game and missed 14 free throws in the second half alone. Haley Sipple added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Kline finished with 14 points and dished out three assists.

Widener (3-5, MAC Commonwealth 1-3) will next host Rowan in what will be the team’s final home game of the calendar year on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.

Widener Men’s Basketball Downed by Lycoming

CHESTER, Pa. (Dec. 10, 2016) – The Widener University men’s basketball team fell to Lycoming by a 74-62 score in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

The teams played a tight game for nearly 35 minutes with the contest featuring nine ties and 10 lead changes. But after a Widener player was whistled for an intentional foul at the 6:58 mark, Darius James hit a free throw to tie the game at 57s and Nyk King drove in for a layup on the ensuing possession to swing the pendulum in the direction of the Warriors. Lycoming scored 15 straight points over a span of 5:14, which was capped by an old-fashioned 3-point play coming from Chris Wallace, to burst ahead by a 67-57 score with under three minutes remaining and never looked back,

Widener led for the majority of the first half and burst out to a 17-9 lead when freshman Elijah Boyd (Germantown, Md.) connected from downtown at the 13:09 mark. The Warriors, however, fought back and regained a slight edge when T.J. Duckett sank two free throws to break a 28-28 deadlock 4:29 on the clock. Kendall Green appeared to sink a layup that would send the teams into the recess tied at 33, but Wallace came through by nailing a jumper ahead of the final buzzer to put the visitors ahead by two.

The Pride quickly regained the lead in the second half when junior Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) dialed up from long distance on the team’s first shot attempt of the frame. Widener once again held the lead for most of the stanza and jumped ahead by as many as seven on two occasions. Lycoming, however, fought back and took advantage of the extra possession it gained following a Widener intentional foul to seize the lead for good during a hot stretch and remained unbeaten in conference play.

Lycoming (7-1, MAC Commonwealth 3-0) was led by Wallace, who came just shy of a double-double by posting 15 points and nine rebounds. He also blocked two shots. David Johnson added 14 points as well as four steals.

Smith paced Widener with a 14-point effort by shooting 4-of-6 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from long range, as well as 3-of-4 at the line. Senior John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) contributed 11 points, three assists and two steals off the bench.

Widener (5-4, MAC Commonwealth 1-3) will take a break for final exams and return to action when it travels to Long Island to face the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.

Rimmer Leads Widener Women’s Basketball Past Lawrence at St. Pete Classic

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Dec. 17, 2016) – Freshman Devan Rimmer (Perkasie, Pa.) registered her first career double-double in leading the Widener University women’s basketball team to a 71-52 victory over Lawrence in the opening game of the St. Pete Classic for both programs on Saturday afternoon.

After a tight first quarter which featured five lead swings and ended in a 15-15 tie, Widener (4-6) pulled away late in the second by ending the half on a 15-2 run. Freshman Anjelica Borja (Somerville, N.J.) found junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.) for a 3-pointer to make it 28-24 and spark a streak of eight unanswered before freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) closed out the frame by sinking two shots at the charity stripe in the waning seconds to give the Pride a comfortable 40-26 advantage at the break.

Lawrence tried to chip away at the deficit and came within 10 when Natalie Kramer made a trifecta at the 7:03 mark, but Widener responded by embarking on a 10-1 run and not allowing its opponent to convert a field goal for nearly seven minutes. Gallagher finished a pass from Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, N.J.) in the waning seconds to give the Pride a 56-37 lead at the end of the third, providing more than enough insurance for the squad to run away with their second victory over their last three games.

Rimmer notched her first double-double by scoring 20 points and corralling a career-high 12 rebounds for Widener. She also shot 8-of-16 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from long range, and added two steals. Gallagher contributed 17 points and eight boards to go along with three steals, while Ireland finished with seven points, five rebounds and three swipes.

Lawrence (2-5) was paced by Leah Reeves and Olivia Hoesley in the losing effort. Reeves netted a game-high 24 points, and Hoesley recorded 16 points and seven rebounds. Despite failing to score on her four shot attempts, Shonell Benjamin led all players on the glass by grabbing 14 rebounds.

Widener wraps up tournament play when it faces St. Norbert tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.

USMMA Sinks Widener Men’s Basketball in Overtime

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 17, 2016) – The Widener University men's basketball team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy by an 87-86 score in overtime at Liebertz Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

With the score knotted at 76 after Matt Miller nailed a jump shot, Widener had the ball with the opportunity to go for the last shot and win the game at the end of regulation. Junior Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) rebounded a missed 3-pointer attempted from the right corner by classmate Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.), but his putback attempt at the buzzer rimmed out to force an extra session.

USMMA (4-7) capitalized in overtime and was able to escape by winning the battle at the free throw line. Hunter Jones first broke the tie by making a jump shot on the Mariners opening possession to begin a 6-0 run for the hosts during the frame.

Senior captain John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.), who was making his first start of the season, then helped Widener come back by finishing an old-fashioned 3-point play and had the opportunity to tie the game by earning another trip to the free throw line with 29 seconds remaining. But after making his first shot, his second attempt to knot the game again was no good. Robbie Kennedy grabbed the rebound and then made three clutch free throws down the stretch to allow the hosts to hang on for the victory.

The teams played a game of leap frog for nearly the entire the first half, exchanging the lead 13 times overall and on nine occasions in the opening six minutes. Junior Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) made it a two-possession game for the first time by canning a 3-pointer to give the Pride a 19-15 edge with 12:44 left, but the Mariners responded and found themselves ahead by a 26-25 score when Eric Sobocinski finished a pass from Matt Miller.

Widener (5-5), however, broke loose over the final minutes of the opening frame by dialing up from long distance. Sophomore Donovan Simon hit a trey with 5:49 on the clock to put the Pride ahead for good and followed with a jumper to break a 28-all tie. Sophomore Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Smith each connected from beyond the arc down the stretch to help give the visitors a 40-35 advantage heading into the recess.

The Pride picked up where they left off and added to their lead in the beginning of the second half. After sophomore Nick Jackson (Rockville, Md.) opened the scoring by sinking a trifecta, junior Sardayah Sambo converted two free throws to put Widener up by twin figures for the first time at 50-39.

USMMA (4-7) fought back and regained the lead when Miller converted a 3-pointer to put his team ahead by a 67-66 score with just over six minutes left, but the Pride had a quick answer on the other end. Kennedy, however, made two shots at the charity stripe to put the Mariners ahead again with five minutes remaining and set up a photo finish that would eventually end in extra time.

Miller scored a game-high 26 points and dished out four assists to lead the way for USMMA, which made seven of its 11 free throw attempts in the extra frame which proved to be the difference. He also shot 9-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from long distance. Kennedy contributed 17 points off the bench, which most notably included 11-of-12 from the stripe and converting seven of his eight attempts in overtime. Connor Green added 18 points and four helpers.

The Pride were paced by Smith in the setback. The junior scored a career-high 22 points and most notably made six shots from beyond the arc. Sambo fell just shy of a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists, while Jackson finished the game in twin figures by netting 10 points.

Widener (5-5) returns to action on Monday, Jan. 2 when it faces Cortland State in its opening game of the Blue Jay Invitational on the campus of Johns Hopkins. The opening tip is slated for 1 p.m.

Widener Women’s Basketball Drops St. Pete Classic Finale to St. Norbert

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Dec. 18, 2016) – The Widener University women’s basketball team dropped its second and final contest at the St. Pete Classic to St. Norbert by a 67-50 score on Sunday afternoon at Eckerd College’s McArthur Center.

St. Norbert (5-4) utilized strong shooting by hitting seven of its first nine field goal attempts to jump out to a 15-10 lead. Brianna Byrne, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark yesterday, converted a layup at the 7:13 mark and was among seven players to find the scoresheet in the early going. Freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.), who led the Pride with five points during the frame, sank a free throw to create a 23-13 score by the end of the first quarter.

Widener chipped away at the deficit and cut it in half during the second quarter when junior Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, N.J.) canned a 3-pointer to make it 25-20 with 7:49 on the click. The guard continued to stay hot from long range and connected two more times from beyond the arc to make it a one-possession game by the end of the quarter. By closing the quarter on a 13-7 run, Widener only trailed 36-33 at the recess.

The Pride came within one point on three occasions in the third quarter, beginning with an Ireland layup to open the scoring for both teams. Freshman Devan Rimmer (Perkasie, Pa.) hit a trey and junior Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) converted a layup to bring the margin down to 46-45 with 2:44 remaining, but the Green Knights were able to shake off each comeback attempt by answering on the other end. St. Norbert led 52-45 at the end of the third and went ahead by double figures in the fourth to later earn a 17-point win and end the weekend undefeated.

Regan Carmichael paced a balanced attack for St. Norbert by contributing 15 points. Sarah Ratajczyk finished with 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting performance from the floor, while Byrne filled the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Venturelli led the way for Widener in the setback by scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds, which were both team bests. Rimmer registered seven points, five boards and matched a game high with four swipes.

Widener (4-7) will next trek to Neumann for its final non-conference game of the season on Friday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.

Neumann Uses Late Rally to Down Widener Women’s Basketball

ASTON, Pa. (Dec, 30, 2016) – Freshman Devan Rimmer (Perkasie, Pa.) continued her torrid start as a collegian by scoring a career-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough, as Neumann rallied in the final quarter to edge the Widener University women’s basketball team by an 85-83 score on Friday afternoon at the Mirenda Center.

Trailing by just one point with 20 seconds remaining, Widener had the ball with an opportunity to go for the last shot and the win. A turnover, however, nearly dashed away hopes of a victory for the Pride in a close game of runs. The visitors had one last opportunity in the waning seconds after Nafisa Saunders made one of two free throws, but freshman Madison Ireland’s (Garnet Valley, Pa.) attempt to tie the game and force overtime was blocked by Mariah Maciejewski.

The tightly-contested first quarter featured four ties and four lead changes. Widener rattled off eight unanswered to take a 13-8 lead, which was capped by a 3-pointer coming off the hands of junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.), but Neumann responded by scoring 10 of the next 12 to pull ahead by an 18-15 score on an AAliya Hayes layup at the 2:40 mark. The Pride, however, recovered and ended the opening frame on a high note when Ireland found classmate Anjelica Borja (Somerville, N.J.) for a trifecta as time expired to give the visitors a 23-19 edge through 10 minutes of play.

Widener was able to maintain its advantage for most of the second quarter, but a feisty Neumann squad battled back and regained the lead when Maciejewski converted a layup and then set up Lauren Legler to make it 37-36 with 1:42 on the clock. But despite falling behind, Widener got a layup from Ireland in the final minute to create a 38-38 deadlock heading into the recess.

The Pride started the second half strong, as Gallagher and Ireland each drove in for layups to prompt a Neumann timeout just 41 seconds into the frame. Rimmer then extended the Pride’s lead to seven by finishing a 3-point play the old-fashioned way, and junior Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) provided a spark off the bench by most notably canning a trey before time expired to give the visitors a more comfortable 70-62 advantage at the end of the third.

Junior Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, N.J.) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter to give the Pride their first double-digit lead by finishing a pass from Borja, but the Knights stormed back and went ahead by an 83-81 score when Hayes converted a layup with just 1:26 remaining in regulation. Neumann, which outrebounded the Pride by a commanding 41-27 margin in the contest, then got a key offensive board from Maciejewski which put her on the line. The sophomore came through to break an 83-83 tie, and the hosts survived to record the two-point win.

Hayes led Neumann (4-5) by finishing with a game-high 30 points, which included 12 during the fourth-quarter rally, to go along with 13 rebounds. Saunders added 21 points as well as three steals and two blocks off the bench, while Maciejewski fell just shy of a double-double by notching nine points and 10 boards.

Rimmer paced Widener by leading the team in four major statistical categories. She contributed 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Ireland and Gallagher finished with 19 and 12 points, respectively, while also providing two steals apiece.

Widener (4-8) next visits Penn State Brandywine for its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.

Valiant Comeback Bid by Widener Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short At Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 7, 2017) – The Widener University men’s basketball team staged a late comeback attempt before eventually dropping a pivotal early Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth contest to Messiah by a 72-65 decision on Saturday afternoon at Brubaker Auditorium.

Despite trailing the entire second half and facing a seven-point deficit at the break, Widener did not go away and slashed a 13-point deficit down to just two in the waning minutes. Senior captain Kendall Green (Mount Laurel, N.J.) stole the ball and converted two free throws to make it 67-65 with 1:06 left, but Neil Murren drove in for a bucket at the other end to give the Falcons room to breathe. A John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) attempt to cut the lead in half fell short off the backboard, and the hosts made free throws down the stretch to escape with the win.

Messiah (7-6, MAC Commonwealth 2-3) got off to a strong start and forced Widener to burn a timeout four minutes into the contest when Logan Long drove in for a reverse layup to make it 11-4 in favor of the hosts. Widener, however, came out of the quick break completely rejuvenated and as a brand-new team. Junior captain Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) made two quick layups to put the Pride within striking distance and later sank a jumper to cap a 14-1 run and give the Pride an 18-12 lead at the 9:22 mark. The Falcons, however, recovered and used a 10-0 run to eventually take a 35-28 advantage into the recess.

With Green leading the charge, Widener quickly chipped away at the deficit in the second half and slashed the deficit to just two points. Green sank a jumper and then a trifecta to close the gap to 35-33, but the hosts shook it off and answered with back-to-back shots from downtown off the fingers of Murren to burst ahead by double digits with 17 minutes on the clock.

Widener had its opportunities to continue to climb back and most notably played the last 13:49 in the bonus during a foul-plagued second half. But after junior Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) sank a trifecta to bring the Pride within seven, Messiah seized the momentum and went ahead by 13 just past the midway point when Josh Darville put back a missed 3-point attempt by Nate Eberle to create a 56-43 score. The margin would prove to be too much for the Pride to overcome, as the visitors came no closer than two before eventually suffering another conference setback.

Josh Clippinger led the way for Messiah by registering a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Murren added 15 points on perfect shooting, and Matt Hess finished with 11 points to go along with seven assists.

Sambo paced Widener with a double-double of his own, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to nearly match the performance of Clippinger. Smith and Green contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Green also pulled down seven boards.

After playing four straight games away from the Schwartz Center, Widener (6-7, MAC Commonwealth 1-4) will return home to face Alvernia on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m.

Widener Women’s Basketball Falls to Nationally-Ranked Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 7, 2017) – The Widener University women’s basketball team fell to #24 Messiah by an 88-51 score on Saturday afternoon at Brubaker Auditorium.

Facing a nationally-ranked opponent on the road for the third time this season, Widener was competitive in the first quarter and only trailed by five through 10 minutes of play. A 3-pointer by Maci Thornton, however, broke a 4-4 tie and her steal on the ensuing inbounds play resulted in a Gillian Glackin layup to give the hosts momentum. The Falcons held off the Pride’s comeback attempts through the remainder of the frame, which included a quick six-point barrage from freshman Devan Rimmer, and led by a 19-14 score at the first break.

Junior Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, N.J.) brought the visitors back within two by canning a trifecta at the 9:29 mark of the second quarter, but Messiah responded with 10 unanswered by getting five field goals from five different players over a span of 2:27. Glackin then hit a trey from the top of the key, and the hosts carried a 37-23 lead into the recess.

Messiah picked up right where it left off by embarking on a 7-2 run to begin the third quarter. Glackin remained tough to defend down low and had all 12 of her points through the end of the frame to help give the Falcons a 29-point cushion to work with through 30 minutes of play. Alecia Rohr extended the lead to 30 at 66-36 by sinking the free throw, and the Pride would come no closer the rest of the way.

Thornton led unbeaten Messiah (14-0, MAC Commonwealth 5-0) by posting three game highs with 16 points, six assists and five steals. Glackin registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, and Rohr contributed 13 points to go along with eight boards.

Rimmer netted 14 points by shooting 5-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line to pace Widener. Junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.) also reached twin figures with 10 points, while freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.

Widener (4-10, MAC Commonwealth 1-4) will look to get back on track when it hosts Alvernia on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m.

Hood Downs Men’s Basketball; Fender Scores Career-High 24 Points

FREDERICK, Md. (Jan. 14, 2017) – Senior captain John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) set a career high for the second straight game by tallying 24 points, but it wasn’t enough, as the Widener University men’s basketball team suffered a 75-63 setback against Hood on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Arena.

The game was competitive at the beginning with neither side leading by more than one possession until Hood’s Michael Robinson hit a 3-pointer to make it 17-12 at the 12:05 mark. After Fender answered with a trifecta on the other end, the Blazers rattled off 12 unanswered to gain the momentum. Scott Bolen, who drilled a 3-pointer to cap the run, made another shot from long range with under a minute left to give the hosts a 38-31 lead at the recess.

Hood (12-4, MAC Commonwealth 4-3) stayed in control throughout the second half. Fender brought the margin down to seven by converting a layup in the opening minute, but the Pride would not come any closer the rest of the way. Kobe Butler ballooned the Blazer lead up to 23 by making a bucket with 8:35 remaining, and Bolen scored the final four points of the game to produce the outcome.

Bolen netted a game-high 25 points and most notably drained six shots from beyond the arc for Hood, which outscored Widener’s bench by a count of 33-3 and had a 37-27 advantage on the glass. Daniel Wegener contributed seven points and seven rebounds in a reserve role, while Trevor Magnuski and Tanner Ruths finished with four assists and three steals apiece.

Fender’s 24-point outburst for Widener came shortly after he set a career high with 21 in Wednesday’s victory over Alvernia. He also grabbed seven rebounds and recorded two steals. Smith notched 17 points, and sophomore Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) finished with nine points to go along with four assists and four boards.

Widener (7-8, MAC Commonwealth 2-5) begins a two-game homestand when it next hosts Arcadia on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m.

Widener Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Arcadia in 78-49 Triumph

CHESTER, Pa. (Jan. 18, 2017) – Freshmen Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and Devan Rimmer (Parkasie, Pa.) combined for 30 points and seven assists as the Widener University women’s basketball team routed Arcadia by a 78-49 score on Wednesday evening at the Schwartz Center.

After finishing the first quarter with a slim 15-14 advantage, Widener turned on the jets midway through the second frame and broke the game open by scoring 12 unanswered. Sophomore Emily Hardy (Lewisberry, Pa.) finished a pass from freshman Kylie Herman to spark the outburst and capped the run on a putback to give the Pride a 31-16 lead at the 3:39 mark. The hosts would then get a bucket from Ireland and two free throws from Rimmer to move ahead by a 35-22 score at recess time.

Widener (6-11, MAC Commonwealth 3-5) kept its foot on the gas pedal in the second half with Rimmer leading the charge. The freshman drove in for a layup on the team’s first possession, canned a 3-point field goal on the squad’s second possession and set up Ireland for a trey on the program’s third possession to give the hosts a 43-22 advantage. The lead ballooned up to 30 when Ireland finished an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 55-25 with 4:55 on the clock, and Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) nailed a jumper ahead of the buzzer to give the Pride a 61-29 lead at the end of the third and more than enough insurance to run away with their second straight victory.

Rimmer fell just shy of a double-double for Widener by scoring 17 points and pulling down nine boards. She also contributed three assists and two steals. Ireland finished the game with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, which included going 2-of-3 from long range, and 1-of-1 at the stripe while also providing six rebounds, four helpers and two swipes. Junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.), Hardy and Petri added 12 points apiece.

Arcadia (6-11, MAC Commonwealth 2-6) was led by Imani Alston’s 10-point effort. Susan Bossler netted eight points, while Olivia Roseman grabbed a team-best five boards.

Widener will look to keep its positive momentum going when it hosts reigning champion Albright on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m.

Widener Men’s Basketball Pulls Away for 70-56 Win Over Arcadia

CHESTER, Pa. (Jan. 18, 2017) – Junior Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) came alive to net 19 points in leading the Widener University men’s basketball team to a 70-56 triumph over Arcadia on Wednesday evening at the Schwartz Center.

Widener built up a quick 7-1 lead and never trailed in the opening half. But after sophomore Nick Jackson (Rockville, Md.) and junior Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) gave the Pride seven-point leads on consecutive possessions, Arcadia climbed back into the game and was able to surprisingly knot the score at 28s heading into the break when Emmanuel Anderson-Marrow stole an inbounds pass and banked the ball in as the buzzer sounded.

The Knights used that momentum to take their first lead of the game in the opening minutes of the second half on two Josh Scott free throws followed by a Kyle Reilly trifecta. Widener, however, came back and responded with a 14-2 run to pull away. Smith most notably converted a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to help the hosts regain the lead at 35-33 and put them up for good with 15:31 left before sophomore Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) extended the margin to twin figures. Sambo then drove in for two layups to make it 68-56 with 1:10 left and put the game out of reach.

Smith and Sambo each finished one rebound shy of a double-double to lead the way for Widener. Sambo contributed 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go along with nine boards and five blocks, while Smith ended the contest with 14 points and a career-high nine boards. Senior John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Phil Pierfy scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace Arcadia (8-9, MAC Commonwealth 3-5) in the loss. Scott registered 12 points and four assists, and Anderson-Marrow added 11 points off the bench.

Widener (8-8, MAC Commonwealth 3-5), which has won five of its last six games at home, will entertain Albright on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

ESTER, Pa. (Jan. 21, 2017) – The Widener University women’s basketball team fell to Albright by a 69-45 score on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

Widener got off to a fast start and led for most of the first quarter, as freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) drove in for a layup just three seconds into the contest and junior Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) canned a 3-pointer on the team’s second possession. The Pride built up a 16-8 advantage when junior Allison Gallagher converted two free throws at the 5:24 mark, but the Lions crept back and got back-to-back layups from MiKayla Lea to take their first lead at 20-19 with 1:20 left.

Trailing by just three at the end of the first quarter, Widener was able to regain the lead in the opening minutes of the second when Gallagher drilled a jump shot to give her team a 23-22 edge over the competition. Albright, however went on a tear and embarked on a 14-2 run to pull away.

Albright (14-4, MAC Commonwealth 9-0) , which led 36-28 at the break, broke the game open in the third quarter by shooting 58.8 percent from the field and only allowing the Pride to convert two of their 16 attempts from the floor. Morgan Harris set up Devan Horka for a layup shortly before time expired in the frame, and the margin would grow to as many as 28 before it was all over.

The Lions were led by Nina Mazzarelli and Alysha Lofton in the victory. Mazzarelli scored 18 points, while Lofton notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists.

Gallagher paced Widener in the loss by contributing a double-double of her own with 10 points and 12 boards. Freshman Devan Rimmer (Parkasie, Pa.) netted nine points, and Petri finished with six points, six rebounds and three steals.

Widener (6-12, MAC Commonwealth 3-6) next travels to Lycoming and will look to sweep the season series between the schools when the teams meet on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.

Sam Smith Propels Widener Men’s Basketball Past Albright in Overtime

CHESTER, Pa. (Jan. 21, 2017) – JuniorSam Smith(Wyomissing, Pa.) scored a career-high 32 points and nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of regulation to help propel the Widener University men's basketball team earn a thrilling 89-78 overtime victory over Albright on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

Widener (9-8, MAC Commonwealth 4-5), which found itself in a 71-67 hole with 12.7 seconds remaining in regulation, would get a pair of clutch 3-point baskets with under four seconds remaining to stay alive. Senior captain Kendall Green (Mount Laurel, N.J.), who put the Pride ahead by a point with 44.1 seconds on the clock, found sophomore Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at the top of the key for an open shot to make it 71-70 with 3.2 seconds left before immediately fouling on the ensuing inbounds pass. Omari Ringgold then hit two free throws to give the Lions a 73-70 lead.

With the hosts facing a 3-point deficit and having to set up 94 feet away from the basket, McMahon sent a long pass down the court to Smith for a desperation shot. The junior’s running attempt from the left arc banked home at the buzzer, which electrified the crowd and sent the Pride bench into bedlam.

Widener used the tidal wave of momentum and dominated the overtime with Smith continuing to have the hot hand. After Jayson Clark converted a layup to give the visitors a slim 75-74 advantage, Smith struck gold by canning back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite a 10-0 run which was capped by an uncontested monster dunk by junior Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) in transition. Smith and McMahon then made free throws down the stretch to ice the comeback victory.

Smith, who played the entire contest, scored a career-high 32 points by shooting 10-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-9 from long range, and a perfect 6-of-6 at the stripe to lead the way for Widener. McMahon finished with 13 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists, while Sambo contributed 13 points and four blocks.

Albright (7-11, MAC Commonwealth 5-4) was paced by Ringgold’s 22-point effort in the setback. Fred Rowles and DeJuan Smith netted 13 points apiece, and Smith also finished with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Widener, which is only game out of second place in the clogged Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth standings, visits Valley Forge for its final non-conference matchup of the regular season on Monday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 23, 2017) – Junior Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) nailed another clutch 3-point basket down the stretch as the Widener University men’s basketball team rallied to earn a 67-65 victory over Valley Forge on Wednesday evening.

Widener trailed by three at the break and by a 57-46 score with 8:30 left before storming back to set up another nail-biting finish. Smith, who provided the heroics in Saturday’s improbable overtime victory against Albright, converted a layup to ignite the rally and then nailed a 3-point shot from the left arc to put the Pride ahead by a 66-65 score with 1:13 on the clock.

The Patriots had plenty of opportunities to regain the lead and most notably had an opportunity to go for the last shot to win after a pass intended for point guard Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) in the backcourt was airmailed into the Patriot bench area. Jalen Archer’s 3-point attempt on the ensuing possession, however, rimmed out and was rebounded by junior Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.). The Widener captain then made the front end of two free throws, and a desperation shot at the buzzer by Connor Huth was no good.

Smith got the Pride off to a hot start by canning a trey on the first play of the game, but Valley Forge (9-6) responded with six straight points and would lead for most of the opening half. After surrendering their advantage on a Connor Laverty trifecta with 3:20 remaining, the Patriots would eventually end the half on a 10-3 run and got a free throw from Devin Williams to carry a 34-31 lead into the break. The Patriots would then build their lead up to 11 on four occasions before Widener’s Smith keyed a rally by scoring 12 of the team’s final 21 points to give the visitors their third straight win.

Smith, who was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Player of the Week earlier today, provided 25 points by shooting 10-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-8 from long range. He also dished out three assists and redirected three shots, marking the third straight game in which he notched at least one career high. Sambo contributed 13 points and seven rebounds along with three blocks, while senior John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) added 10 points and eight boards.

Archer paced Valley Forge, which is in its first year of having active NCAA Division III status following a provisional period. He had 13 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Devin Williams also netted 13 points and Alex Sanchez contributed 12 points as well as two steals.

Widener (10-8) will look to extend its winning streak when it visits Lycoming on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m.

Widener Men’s Basketball Knocks Off First-Place Lycoming On The Road

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2017) – Freshman Connor Laverty (Upper Township, N.J.) scored nine points and notched a key steal in the waning seconds to help propel the Widener University men’s basketball team to a 72-70 road win over first-place Lycoming on Saturday afternoon at Lamade Gym. The Pride nearly led from wire-to-wire and held off a late charge by the Warriors to pick up their fourth straight victory as well as their fifth in the last six games.

Even though Widener built up a 21-point lead in the second half, the Warriors stormed back and the teams found themselves fighting for the edge until the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation. Following a good free throw by Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) that made it 72-70 with 12 seconds remaining in regulation, Lycoming had the ball with the chance to tie or win and avoid overtime. The Warriors attempted to at least go for the tie by looking down low, but Laverty came through with a key steal through contact. No foul was called on the play, and the Pride narrowly escaped with the pivotal conference victory.

Widener combined a balanced offense with a stingy defense to build up a quick lead they would hold for nearly the entire first half. After Alex Newbold sank a shot at the free throw line to put the Warriors temporarily ahead by a 4-3 score, the red-hot Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) dialed up from long distance to kickstart a run for the Pride. A dunk by Sambo extended the margin to 32-18 at the 4:23 to prompt a Lycoming timeout, and Smith connected from downtown again to give the Pride a 44-27 advantage at the half.

The Warriors began chipping away at the deficit in the second half and came within 10 to force the Pride to take a timeout with 10:22 left. Darius James stole the ball in the backcourt and went in for an uncontested slam and then set up T.J. Duckett for a trey to make it 61-51.

Widener’s lead continued to shrink after the quick break, as David Johnson scored six straight points to continue a 21-4 run and create a 63-59 score with 7:47 left. The Pride temporarily recovered and moved their lead back up to eight courtesy of sharp shooting by senior captain Kendall Green (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at the free throw line, and the visitors survived a late scare from the hosts to win for the fifth time in six outings.

Sambo contributed a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six blocks to lead the way for Widener. He also dished out a team-leading four assists. Smith finished with 18 points, while Laverty contributed nine points, six boards and three helpers.

Duckett scored a game-high 21 points by most notably converting six shots from downtown to pace Lycoming (16-4, MAC Commonwealth 8-3), which has been receiving votes in the national poll for the past several weeks. Nyk King and Darius James added 11 points apiece.

Widener (11-8, MAC Commonwealth 5-5) will look to remain in postseason contention when it hosts Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m.

Lycoming Betters Widener Women’s Basketball

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2017) – The Widener University women’s basketball team was dealt a 91-63 road loss by Lycoming on Saturday afternoon at Lamade Gym.

Lycoming (12-7, MAC Commonwealth 6-5) nearly led from wire-to-wire to avenge a road loss against the Pride earlier this season. After junior Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) drilled a 3-pointer to give the visitors a brief 6-4 lead, the Warriors responded by ending the opening quarter on a 25-8 run to establish control. Morgan Mader hit back-to-back shots from downtown to give the hosts a 29-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors maintained their commanding advantage for the remainder of the contest, as Nicole Calella put back a miss on the team’s opening possession of the second frame and Mader extended the margin to as many as 25 at 42-17 by nailing a trey at the quarter’s midway point. The Warriors then got another 3-pointer from Mader to take a 52-29 lead into the recess and never trailed by less than 21 the rest of the way.

Lycoming was led by Shelby Mueller’s 20-point effort. She also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Ashley McFadden contributed 14 points and six assists, and Mader added a career-high 16 points off the bench.

The Pride were paced by juniors Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.) and Petri in the setback. Gallagher scored a team-high 16 points, while Petri netted 14. Freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) dished out five assists and only turned the ball over once, which was also the best assist-to-turnover ratio of her promising career as a collegian.

Widener (6-13, MAC Commonwealth 3-7) will regroup and return home to face Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m.

Widener Women’s Basketball’s Late Surge Comes Up Short at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (Feb. 4, 2017) – The Widener University women’s basketball team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth game to Stevenson by a 65-54 score on Saturday afternoon at the Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Stevenson (14-8, MAC Commonwealth 9-4) burst out to a quick 9-2 lead when Sara Tarbert eclipsed the 2,000th-point plateau for her career with an off-balance shot down low. The Mustangs stayed in control throughout the frame and led 21-11 at the end of the first by getting two free throws from Tarbert in the waning seconds.

The Pride tried to come back and opened the scoring when junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.) drove in for a layup at the 9:50 mark, but a suffocating Mustang defense did not allow the visitors to convert a field goal for the remainder of the half. Tarbert made another layup to secure a 19-point advantage for Stevenson at the recess.

In the second half, the Mustangs continued to pad their lead with Kaitlyn Vantash providing majority of the offense to balloon the lead up to 24. Widener made an attempt to come back and brought the margin down to eight on two occasions in the final minutes, but the earlier deficit proved to be too much for the Pride to overcome.

Tarbert paced Stevenson by registering another double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. She also redirected three shots. Vantash added 19 points and nine boards.

Rimmer led Widener in scoring with 11 points, while freshman Madison Ireland contributed 10 points and five assists and Gallagher notched 10 points along with seven rebounds. All three players also recorded three steals apiece.

Widener (6-15, MAC Commonwealth 3-9) will look to get back on track when it hosts nationally-ranked Messiah on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.

Women’s Basketball Defeats Hood, 65-46, on Senior Day

CHESTER, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2017) – Senior Aly Furgiuele (Norwalk, Conn.) had a career afternoon in her final home game as a collegian to help propel the Widener University women’s basketball team to a 65-46 victory over Hood on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

Widener burst out to leads of 6-0 and 9-2 by capitalizing from long range and led from wire-to-wire. Junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.) and freshman Devan Rimmer (Parkasie, Pa.) combined to make three shots from downtown to give the Pride a lead in the early going which they would never relinquish.

The hosts led by two touchdowns at the end of the first by getting a pair of free throws from Gallagher down the stretch and then ballooned the margin to 22 at 34-12 when Rimmer connected from beyond the arc at the midway point of the second quarter. Widener most notably outrebounded Hood by a 32-17 margin in the first half and would carry a 41-22 lead into the break.

Widener stayed in control throughout the second half and built up a 55-31 advantage when Brianna Cullen (Lansdale, Pa.) stole the ball and converted a layup on the other end in transition. The junior then set up freshman Angelica Borja (Somerville, N.J.) for a jumper to give the Pride a 57-36 at the end of the third, and Hood came no closer than 18 when Taylor McGaughey made a layup with just over a minute remaining in regulation. A free throw by Furgiuele sealed the final outcome.

Furgiuele, who was recognized for her contributions to the program prior to the contest, arguably played the best game of her career to lead the way for Widener. She grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and matched another career mark with eight points. Gallagher and Rimmer tallied 17 and 13 points, respectively, and freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) also had a career afternoon by dishing out 10 assists and only committing two turnovers. Ireland also pulled down six rebounds and recorded two steals.

Hood (6-17, MAC Commonwealth 1-13) was paced by Allie Appleby and Deaja Colden in the loss. Appleby scored 12 points and registered four assists, while Colden finished the game with six points, 10 boards and three steals.

Widener (7-16, MAC Commonwealth 4-10) next visits Arcadia on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m.

Widener Men’s Basketball Routs Hood on Senior Day to Remain in Playoff Contention

CHESTER, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2017) – Seniors John Fender (Wallingford, Pa.) and Kendall Green (Mount Laurel, N.J.) combined to score 31 points and dish out 11 assists in their final regular season home game as collegians as the Widener University men’s basketball team defeated Hood in an 87-60 rout on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

Green and Fender provided the early scoring to help the Pride build up a 7-0 advantage and a lead they would never surrender. Sophomore Ryan McMahon (Mount Laurel, N.J.) set up Green for a 3-pointer and a layup, and Fender followed with a trifecta of his own. The hosts continued to cash in from long range and went ahead by a 19-6 score courtesy of back-to-back 3-pointers coming off the hands of McMahon and freshman Connor Laverty (Upper Township, N.J.), and another trey from Green gave Widener a 36-24 advantage at recess.

Widener (14-9, MAC Commonwealth 8-6) started the second half strong with the seniors providing the helpers this time, as Green set up junior Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) for a 3-pointer before Fender found junior Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) for a dunk. The Pride maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way by never letting Hood get any closer than 11 points, and a layup by Sambo which made it 85-57 with 1:59 remaining provided more than enough insurance to win at home for the ninth time in 12 tries.

Green and Fender, who were recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the contest, led the way for Widener in the lopsided victory. Green finished the game with 17 points and three assists, while Fender contributed 14 points and a career-high eight helpers. Smith and Sambo registered 20 and 18 points, respectively, while also combining to grab 15 rebounds.

Hood (14-9, MAC Commonwealth 6-8) was led by Scott Bolen and Tanner Ruths in the setback. Bolen scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Ruths netted 12 points and dished out three assists.

Widener will continue its push for its first conference postseason berth in five years when it visits Arcadia on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m.

YORK, Pa. (Feb. 12, 2017) – Junior Liz O’Sullivan (Somers Point, N.J.) placed second in the 200-yard butterfly in record-breaking time and classmate Christine Kunzler (Livermore, Calif.) anchored a relay which also set a program standard to lead the Widener University women’s swimming team to a runner-up finish at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Sunday evening at the Graham Aquatic Center. The Pride placed second for the fourth time in the last six years under the direction of head coach Katy Steimer.

Messiah maintained its lead on the final day of action and won its fourth straight title with 619 points. Widener registered 595.5 points to finish second, while Arcadia (522), Stevenson (349), Albright (339), Misericordia (256), King’s (217), Hood (164), Lycoming (140), Wilkes (83), Lebanon Valley (74) and FDU-Florham (32.5) rounded out the team standings.

Widener closed out the championship meet on a high note by having the 400 free relay team post a winning and school-record time of 3:32.74. The group consisting of senior Melaney Heald (Georgetown, Del.), sophomore Kaylin Augustine (Wyoming, Pa.), freshman Jill Bujanowski (Edgewater Park, N.J.) and Kunzler eclipsed the previous mark of 3:33.42 which was established in 2012 by Laura Harris, Laura Farrar, Sara Leonelli and Kelsey Lake.

The Pride also piled up a combined 90 points in the 100 free and 1,650 free to stay in contention for the title along with Messiah and Arcadia. Kunzler and sophomore Alyssa Myers (Broomall, Pa.) each registered runner-up finishes with times of 52.91 seconds and 17:58.70 in the 100, respectively, to lead the way, and O'Sullivan added the team's third runner-up finish by finishing the 200 fly in 2:10.40 and breaking her own program standard in her premier event.

Widener showed significant improvement this season with a young squad consisting of 12 underclassmen, including seven freshmen, on the 19-player roster. The team closed the gap by finishing second behind Messiah by only 23.5 points after finishing in the runner-up position and 258 behind the Falcons last season. The Pride graduate only two seniors and are slated to return 17 letterwinners next season, which includes 10. swimmers who were named all-conference over the weekend for placing in the top eight of an event.

Two Widener Men’s Basketball Players and Carideo Earn All-Conference Honors

ANNVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 24, 2017)– Widener University juniorsSardayah Sambo(Middletown, Del.) andSam Smith(Wyomissing, Pa.) as well as head coachChris Carideoearned All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth men's basketball postseason accolades, as announced by the league office on Friday morning. Carideo was named the coach of the year, while Sambo made the first team and Smith landed on the second team after leading the Pride to their best season in five years.

Carideo is receiving the league's top coaching honor for the second time of his career after previously winning the award in 2009. He piloted the Pride to a 16-9 ledger, including a 10-6 conference mark, in the regular season and guided the program to the league's postseason tournament for the first time since 2012 with a group consisting of just two seniors. Widener, which vaulted up to second in the standings by winning nine of its last 10 regular season games, led the league in field goal percentage (.487) and field goal percentage defense (.395) in overall contests while also ranking first in scoring defense (70.7 ppg) against MAC Commonwealth foes under Carideo's tutelage during the regular season.

Sambo, who is being recognized with postseason laurels for the second time of his career, proved to be a matchup nightmare for opposing teams throughout the winter. The junior ranks sixth in the league in scoring (15.6 ppg), third in rebounding (7.2 pg) and leads the conference in field goal percentage (.610) and blocked shots (2.8 pg). Furthermore, the 6-foot-3-inch guard concluded the regular season ranked ninth in the country in blocked shots per game behind eight players who stand 6-feet, 7-inches or taller. Sambo, who was named the conference's player of the week three times, also became the 27th student-athlete in program history to join the 1,000-point club in the team's 93-78 victory over Messiah on Feb. 8.

Smith is also receiving postseason recognition for the first time following a breakout junior campaign. The guard, who averaged 2.5 points per game and converted nine 3-pointers last season as a sophomore, exploded to account for 14.6 points per contest while shooting 42 percent (63-of-150) from downtown this winter. In addition, Smith ranks tied for ninth in the league in scoring as well as second in 3-pointers made per game (2.4). The junior's best performance came in an 89-78 overtime victory over Albright on Jan. 21 when he scored a career-high 32 points, which included a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that is also currently a finalist in the national running for the GEICO Play of the Year.

Widener Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener Against Marymount

CHESTER, Pa. (Feb. 25, 2017) –The Widener University women’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Marymount by a 13-8 score on Saturday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Marymount (3-0) built up a quick 3-0 lead over Widener until sophomore Kelly Lynch fired back and put one in the net off of a free position shot to put the Pride on the board with 22:27 on the clock. The Saints, however, answered right back by scoring four unanswered goals and went into the recess with a commanding 9-3 lead.

Widener did not give up and began chipping away at the deficit in the second half. Senior Jamie Parent (Millville, N.J.) found the net with 26:30 left to play, and Meg Steffney (West Deptford, N.J.) added another tally just two minutes to cut the margin and make it 10-5. Senior Angie Baricko (Toms River, N.J.) then scored twice in a span of just over three minutes down the stretch, but the earlier deficit would prove to be too much for the Pride to overcome.

Holly Reik turned away 10 shots to earn the victory between the pipes for Marymount, while the Pride'sGrace Morales (East Norwich, N.Y.) recorded 11 saves in the setback.

Widener (0-1) will return to action when it travels to face King’s on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m.

Widener Men's Lacrosse's 4th-Quarter Comeback Attempt Falls Just Shy at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (Feb. 25, 2017) – The Widener University men's lacrosse team had a furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt fall just short in a 15-13 setback at Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Widener, which trailed 14-8 through three quarters, stormed back in the fourth and seized the momentum with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Shortly after junior John Ferguson (Springfield, Pa.) found freshman Paz Gismondi (West Deptford, N.J.) for a marker to slice the margin down to five, three non-releasable penalties were issued on the same play which resulted in the Pride earning a man-up opportunity with 10:28 left. The Pride capitalized when junior Chris Drake (Middletown, N.J.) finished a Gismondi pass for his fourth goal of the game just 16 seconds into the rare situation, and senior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) added two more markers just 11 seconds apart to slash the lead down to a pair of goals at 14-12 with 7:43 on the clock.

The Garnet, however, were able to hold off the furious rally attempt by the Pride when Jake Ross buried a pass from Cam Marsh with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. Widener answered back with Schulte finding the back of the net for the fifth time and had additional opportunities to at least potentially force overtime for the second straight meeting between the schools, but shot attempts by Gismondi, sophomore Brady Franks (State College, Pa.) and Chris Sanchez (Flanders, N.J.) were unsuccessful. Swarthmore regained possession and cleared the ball away into its offensive third to hang on for its second straight win to open the season.

The teams traded goals to start the game before the Garnet would establish control by embarking on a 5-1 run to close out the first quarter. Widener started the second frame strong by winning the faceoffs and netting two straight goals, but Swarthmore rattled off four straight to build up a six-goal lead. The hosts carried a comfortable 11-6 advantage into the recess and would eventually escape with the victory.

Cole Fox made 10 saves to pick up the win between the pipes for Swarthmore (2-0), which won 21 of 31 faceoffs and had a 41-37 edge in total shots as well as a 39-32 advantage in ground balls. Stephen Ducey won 18 of his 23 faceoff attempts and picked up seven ground balls, while Marsh led the offense with seven points on three goals and four assists.

Widener (1-1) was paced by Drake, who had a career afternoon by registering four goals and three assists for seven points. Schulte totaled five goals, matching a career high, and Shane Cook (Lincoln, Pa.) finished the game with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) turned away 11 shots in the cage.

The Pride will next travel to face Mary Washington on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m.

dener Baseball Opens 2017 Campaign With Twinbill Sweep of Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. (Feb. 25, 2017) – Senior Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) won his first start of the season by throwing five strong innings in the opener and classmate Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) belted a two-run triple to ignite the offense in the nightcap to help lead the Widener University baseball team to a twinbill sweep of Washington College on Saturday afternoon. The Pride won by scores of 4-2 and 8-3 to begin their 2017 campaign on a high note.

After having a potential home run taken away by senior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.), who reached over the wall in center field to make an acrobatic catch, Washington College still found a way to plate the first run in the opener by capitalizing on a Widener fielding error. The Pride, however, responded by scoring twice in the top of the fourth when senior Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) hit a two-run double to right center. Sophomore Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) then doubled the margin an inning later by going yard to left.

The Shoremen attempted to rally and sliced the deficit in half thanks to getting a pinch-hit single to right off the bat of Jay Felts. But the hosts would not be able to regain the lead the rest of the way, as DeBellis doubled and later came home on a fielder’s choice to produce the final outcome.

McKelvy picked up the victory for Widener by yielding two runs, including one earned, and five hits over five innings of work. He also fanned six and did not issue a walk to improve his record to 1-0 on the young season. Sophomore Bryson Turner (Mertztown, Pa.) and senior Elliot Snyder (Mountain Top, Pa.) each hurled one shutout inning of relief, and Snyder picked up a save by pitching a scoreless seventh. Washington College’s Billy Griffin suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1 after giving up five hits and three runs in 4.2 innings. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

Widener got its bats going early in the nightcap by scoring once in the top of the first and three times in the third. Senior Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) put the Pride on the board by coming home on a wild pitch, and was then plated again along with McDonough thanks to a two-run triple by Barnett. Healey then padded the lead and made it 4-0 by knocking in Barnett on a single to right.

Washington College (0-2), however, clawed back and made it a game again during the middle innings beginning when Evan Hirschbaum homered with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to give the hosts some life. A single up the middle by Joe Lozupone then brought the Shoremen within one, but that was as close as they would come for the remainder of the contest. Sophomore Nick D’Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) made it a 5-3 game with an RBI single in the top of the sixth, and McDonough added insurance by providing a two-run double to center and then scoring on an error to provide the final margin.

Senior Donovan Davis (Wallingford, Pa.) won his first start of the season for the Pride by striking out seven and walking only one in five frames. Joey Zettlemoyer (Downingtown, Pa.) earned the save by throwing two scoreless innings of relief, punching out three opposing hitters and not issuing a walk. The Shoremen’s Brian Kasey suffered the loss and fell to 0-1 after giving up four runs, which were all earned, and five hits in three frames.

Widener (2-0) will return to action when it travels to the University of Delaware to face Scranton on Sunday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m.

Widener Baseball Powers Past Scranton to Finish Opening Weekend Undefeated

NEWARK, Del. (Feb. 26, 2017) – Senior Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate and drove in five runs to power the Widener University baseball team to a 21-13 victory over Scranton on Sunday afternoon at Delaware’s Bob Hannah Stadium.

Scranton (2-1) scored four times in the top of the third, by capitalizing on a Pride fielding error that occurred on the first play of the frame, but Widener came back with a vengeance by scoring 12 times in the bottom half of the same inning. Enos proved to be the biggest sparkplug for the offense, as he first singled in senior Bob Barnett () to put the Pride up 5-4 and ahead for good before blasting a bases-clearing triple in his next at-bat to make it 13-4 and cap the offensive explosion.

After hurler Matthew Guarino blanked the Royals in the top of the fourth, Widener tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior Justin Healey belted a two-run single through the right side, and Enos then hit the ball the other way to give the Pride their largest lead at 17-4 and put the game out of reach. Scranton would only bring the margin down to eight the rest of the way.

In addition to having Enos’ dominating offensive performance, Healey had a perfect day at the plate by going 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Dylan Morrissette (Telford, Pa.) also had a strong afternoon by notching the first two hits of his collegiate career, which included doubling to the power alley in left, and driving in a pair of insurance runs.

Guarino picked up the victory on the bump for Widener and improved to 1-0 on the young season by allowing eight hits and six runs, including just one which was earned, over five innings of work. He also registered one strikeout. Scranton’s David Chromey was tagged with the loss after being lit up for eight runs, which were all earned, while lasting just two innings.

Widener (3-0) will look to stay hot when it travels to Fort Pierce, Fla. for its next seven games. The Pride are slated to open up the week of competition against Monmouth on Saturday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m.

Mary Washington Clips Men’s Lacrosse, 12-9, in Virginia

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (March 4, 2017) – Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) made a career-high 18 saves, but it wasn’t enough, as the Widener University men’s lacrosse team fell to Mary Washington by a 12-9 score at the Battleground on Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter was an offensive struggle with both teams battling frigid conditions. Mary Washington drew first blood when Miles Davis netted a goal at the 7:59 mark, but Widener had a quick answer just 57 seconds later when Shane Cook found Chris Drake to even the score on the team’s first shot attempt of the game. Sophomore Drew Amsley (Carlisle, Pa.) later broke a 3-3 tie by notching an unassisted marker, and the Pride carried a 4-3 lead into the recess.

The teams continued to play a game of nip and tuck throughout the second half. There were three lead changes, and neither side led by more than a goal until Mary Washington’s Davis capped a streak of four unanswered tallies by netting his second straight marker to make it 9-7 with 5:43 remaining in regulation.

Widener was able to slice the lead in half when freshman Paz Gismondi (West Deptford, N.J.) zinged the strings at 5:09, but that was as close as the visitors would come the rest of the way. The Eagle defense only allowed the visitors to attempt two more shots, and Mike Marson factored into a trio of goals down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

Marson and Davis registered five points apiece to pace the offense for Mary Washington (2-3), which had a 45-29 advantage in total shots and a 13-12 edge in faceoff wins. Marson posted four goals and one assist, while Davis finished with three goals and two helpers. Davis also scooped up 12 ground balls. Goalkeeper Sam Wasson turned away 15 shots to pick up the victory between the pipes.

Horton led the way for Widener by registering a career-high 18 saves, which eclipsed his previous best mark of 16 stops he contributed against nationally-ranked Gettysburg and Stevenson last season. Drake added four goals and one assist on the offensive end.

Widener (1-2) returns home to face Dickinson on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m.

Widener Baseball Completes Twinbill Sweep of Kenyon in Walk-Off Fashion

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 5, 2017) – Senior Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) hurled a complete game in the opener and junior Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) hit a walk-off single in the nightcap as the Widener University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Kenyon on Sunday afternoon in Florida. The Pride won the first game, 6-2, and took the nightcap by a 12-11 score in 11 frames.

The Pride came out strong in the opener and tacked on four runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate the first run, and classmate Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) followed with a two-run single to add insurance. A failed pickoff attempt then allowed Czupryna to come home for the Pride's fourth run.

With McKelvy in full control on the mound, sophomore Brennan Taylor (Maple Shade, N.J.) padded the lead in the fourth inning and made it 6-0 by knocking in two runs on a single to center field. The Lords answered back in the bottom of the seventh when Eric DelRosso blasted a two-run homer, but the early deficit would be too much for them to overcome.

McKelvy picked up the victory for Widener and improved his record to 2-0 this season after yielding two runs and four hits. He also retired the first 11 batters he faced, struck out three and did not issue a walk for the second time in as many starts. Kenyon's Jesse Bogacz suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1 after giving up six runs and three hits in four innings. He fanned eight and issued five walks.

The Pride fell behind in the second inning of the nightcap before quickly clawing back by scoring four times in the bottom half of the frame. junior Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) and Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) each belted two-run singles to give Widener a 4-3 edge, and Enos went yard in the third inning to double the margin.

Kenyon (0-2) stormed back by plating six unanswered runs to take a 9-6 lead in the second, but the Pride were able to erase a three-run deficit for the second time and forced extra innings by evening the score in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) began the frame by hitting a solo homer to left, McDonough blasted an RBI double four plays later and senior Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) sent in the tying run on a groundout to second base that extended the game.

After the teams traded runs in the eighth and ninth frames, Widener was able to pull ahead and come away with a walk-off victory in the bottom of the 11th. Batting with two outs and the bases loaded, Lowery provided the heroics by singling to left field to plate Elfreth for the winning run.

Freshman Kevin Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J.) picked up his first collegiate win on the mound for Widener by throwing two scoreless frames. He only allowed one hit, struck out two and did not issue a walk to improve his record to 1-0. Kenyon's Patrick O'Leary suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1 after surrendering two runs and four hits in 2.2 innings of relief. He struck out two and issued no walks.

Widener (5-1) will return to action when it takes on Penn State Behrend on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m.

Widener Softball Splits on Day Two in Florida and Triumphs Over Muskingum

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 7, 2017) – Sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs to help lead a balanced offense as the Widener University softball team rallied to earn an 8-5 victory over Muskingum at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday morning. The Pride also fell to Lakeland by a 4-2 score later in the day.

Muskingum (1-4) built up an early lead by scoring three times in the bottom of the first, but the Pride had an immediate answer by adding tacking on three runs of their own in the top of the second. Batting with the bases loaded, Liz Antonucci hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring junior Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.), and then Rogers reached on a bunt to plate freshman Carli Benozich to bring Widener within one. Three plays later, freshman Jamie Gosselin drew a bases-loaded walk to even the score.

After the teams exchanged runs in the middle innings, the Pride tallied for runs in the sixth to pull away. Junior Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) drove in the go-ahead run on a hard single to third base, and Antonucci later reached on an error in the outfield which scored two more later in the frame to give the Pride an 8-4 cushion. The Fighting Muskies came within three when Jessica Matthews hit a sacrifice fly to center, but senior Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) was able to silence the bats down the stretch to help the Pride come away with the win.

Senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) won her first decision for Widener after giving up seven hits and three earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. She struck out one and did not issue a walk. Schengrund picked up her first save by throwing 1.2 scoreless frames and allowing only one hit. Muskingum’s Haylea Deboit was tagged with the loss after giving up two hits and four runs without recording an out in the seventh.

Later in the day, Lakeland (5-4) built up a 4-0 lead by most notably a pair of RBI singles from Sami Jo Williams in the second and sixth frames. Widener, however, started to come back by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth to slash the deficit in half.

The Pride got on the board by the unlikeliest of circumstances. DelRomano walked and then drew attention on a continuation in an attempt to trick the Muskies, allowing Horvath to come home from third, and found a way to reach third and avoid being caught in a rundown to complete a rare double steal. The junior second baseman then came home on a sacrifice fly by Benozich.

After senior Devin Coyne came to the circle and kept the Muskies in check during the top of the seventh, Widener threatened to at least tie and possibly win the game in the bottom of the frame by loading the bases with only one out. Horvath unleashed a bullet up the middle on the ensuing play, but second baseman Hailey Jester snagged the ball in her glove and stepped on the bag to complete the unassisted double play.

Nikki Saviano picked up the victory and improved her record to 3-1 for Lakeland after yielding six hits and two runs, which were both earned, over six frames. Taylor Bush earned the save by keeping the Pride off the board in the seventh with a little help from her defense. Widener junior Katie Rabuck took the loss for allowing five hits and for runs, including three earned, in six innings of work.

Widener (2-2) will take tomorrow off and finish competing at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday. The team will face Simpson at 9 a.m. and Bluffton at 11:15 a.m.
