SUBJECT: Wildcats Earn Split with Pace, 2-4 and 5-4, in 2014 Softball Season Opener

DATE: March 2, 2014
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University softball team scored twice in the fourth inning to come back and take game two of a doubleheader against Pace, splitting the season opening series on Saturday and earning first year head coach Mike Shehorn his first collegiate victory.

The games were played on the turf at the WU Athletics Complex instead of the regular home field of the Wildcats on Asbury Field in New Castle. But the different surroundings didn't stop Wilmington (1-1 overall) and Pace (1-1) who were both looking to get out and play against an opposing team for the first time in 2014.

Pace took the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2, before the Wildcats bounced back and took the nightcap, 5-4.

The true season opener was deadlocked at 1-1 after the third inning on the strength of solo homeruns from each side. Pace's Nikole Larm started the scoring with a solo shot down the left field line in the top of the second, barely crossing the fence in fair territory. Wilmington's Miranda Pedersen responded with a long shot to the gap in left center, tying the game in the bottom of the third.

The score remained 1-1 on the strength of starting pitcher Chelsea Botsch until the top of the sixth inning. Pace's leadoff hitter Shelby Yung took two bases on a sacrifice bunt, standing on third with one out. An RBI single gave the Setters the lead before a bases loaded walk brought a second run in the inning.

Trailing 4-1, the Wildcats put a rally together in the seventh inning, loading the bases with only one out. With the tying run at the plate, Meghan Logullo's fielder's choice brought one run across but left the home team with two outs and only runners at first and second. Pace escaped the jam to win game one, 4-2.

Junior Kelsey Doherty lifted the Wildcats in the nightcap, collecting three of the team's four hits and reaching base all four times in the 5-4 win. Sophomore Jen Fischbach tallied the other hit while picking up the win in relief in the circle, tossing the final 4.2 innings and only allowing one hit.

The Wildcats got on the board early in the game, as Doherty led off the bottom half with a triple to right center. With runners on second and third, Doherty raced home on a wild pitch for the game's first run before Logullo gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead by scoring on a suicide squeeze by Pedersen.

Pace responded with a pair of runs in each the second and third innings, before Fischbach closed the deficit to 4-3 with a double to the gap in left, scoring Pedersen in the bottom of the third.

Wilmington added on in their next at-bat, as the Wildcats quickly loaded the bases without recording an out. Logullo executed another perfect squeeze play, reaching first on an error and scoring Cambria Ziemba. Pedersen gave the Wildcats the lead, 5-4, with sacrifice fly to left, scoring Shannon McMahon from third.

Fischbach took over from inside the circle, only allowing one walk and two runners to reach base in the sixth inning. The jam was quickly averted, however, as Pedersen turned a 6-3 double play on a base hit back up the middle to take the wind out of Pace's sails. Fischbach slammed the door on the team's first victory with a perfect seventh inning, giving the Wildcats the split.

Doherty finished game two 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored while Pedersen tallied a team high three RBI on the afternoon.

The Wildcats doubleheader against Bloomsburg scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed and now won't play again until they reach the Sunshine State for their annual Florida trip. The team opens their weeklong trip with a common opponent, playing conference rival Dominican on Friday in a nonconference game. The team will follow with a second game on Friday against Wheeling Jesuit. The games will be played in Clermont, Fla.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. - - Saint Augustine led wire-to-wire in capturing the Toys for Tots Holiday Tournament Championship, 90-62, over the Wilmington University women's basketball team on Saturday night in Fleming Hall, hosted by West Virginia State University.

The Falcons (5-4 overall) scored the first six points of the contest, and 15 of the first 17 points in the first 5:18 of the game and never looked back. The Wildcats (3-8 overall) never recovered from the early deficit, despite receiving 27 points from sophomore Tenicia Spence off the bench.

Spence, in addition to her 34 point effort from the tournament's opening game, averaged 30.5 points per game while shooting 56 percent from the floor for the weekend. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for her effort.

The Falcons' lead continued to grow throughout the first half, as they used an eight-point run in the final two minutes of play to head into the halftime break with a 43-16 lead.

The offense started to click in the second half for the Wildcats, but the damage was already done as Wilmington only closed to as few as 21 in the second half. But from that point, the Falcons used another 20-6 run to gain their largest lead of the game at 84-49 with 4:24 remaining in regulation.

When the calendar turns, the Wildcats return to action on January 6 at Lancaster Bible. The next time to catch the Wildcats at the WU Athletics Complex is when they return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action against Philadelphia on January 8.

LANCASTER, Pa. - - An explosive second half by sophomore Tenicia Spence allowed the Wilmington University women's basketball team to come back and defeat Lancaster Bible, 79-72, in its first game of the New Year on Monday night.

Spence scored 23 of her career high 36 points in the second half, as the sophomore continues to inch towards the single game scoring record held by former All-American Amelia Simmons. The 36 points is the second most points in a single game in the Wildcats' NCAA era, as Simmons once scored 37 points against Concordia in 2008.

After a slow start, by the sophomore's standards, that saw Spence shoot only 6-of-14 from the floor including 1-of-4 from the three point arc in the first half, she went 7-of-11 in the second half. The second half including 2-of-4 from the beyond the three-point arc, as well as hitting 7-of-10 from the foul line in the win.

Spence helped the Wildcats (4-8 overall) overcome a four point deficit at the half, as they needed to come back from down by as many as nine points in the opening 20 minutes. The Wildcats held the lead as late as 9:18 in the first half before the Chargers (5-3 overall) went on a 8-0 run on the strength of six free throws to grab a 23-16 lead with 7:07 left in the half.

Another 5-0 run pushed a four point lead to a 31-22 lead for Lancaster Bible with 3:02 left on the clock; the largest of the evening for the home team.

Taylor Carter started the late first half come back with a made jumper before Spence cut it to five with another bucket on the Wildcats' next possession. Back-to-back buckets by Spence cut the deficit to 36-32 with 31 second remaining before the Chargers added another pair of foul shots to head into the locker room with a four point advantage.

The Wildcats opened the second half with a 9-5 run to tie the game at 41. Another brief tie at 43 was the final time the Chargers would share the game with the Wildcats before a pair of foul shots by Spence with 11:50 to play gave the Wildcats the lead for good.

Now leading 49-48, the Wildcats used a 19-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 67-53 with 5:58 remaining in regulation before cruising to the finish line.

Spence's 36 points came off the bench for the Wildcats, as she also added six steals on the defensive end. Junior Cari Callaway added 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting, hitting all three of her foul shots to be the only other Wildcat to finish in double figures.

DATE: January 8, 2014
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - With the 2014 season approaching, first year head coach Mike Shehorn unveiled the upcoming Wilmington University softball schedule on Wednesday, with some notable changes taking place while looking at the slate.

The most noticeable change to the schedule is the length at which the Wildcats will be participating in games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Unlike years past, Shehorn has scheduled six play days during the teams annual trip to Florida as opposed to the two-week time-period in previous seasons.

"We wanted to play more games closer to home this year," Shehorn, who took over the program in August, said. "Having games closer to home means we get to play more regional teams this year, which can only help us."

Four of those regional games are even before the Wildcats take off for Florida, as they are going to welcome Pace and Bloomsburg to Asbury Field in New Castle to kick off the season. The 2014 season debut will be a doubleheader against Pace on March 2, before Bloomsburg comes to town for a doubleheader on March 4.

The Wildcats then head to Florida where they will play 12 games in six days, returning home on March 14. The National Training Complex in Clermont, Fla. has not released the 2014 slate of games when Shehorn released his schedule.

Upon arrival back in Delaware, the Wildcats open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference at home as well, facing Felician in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 16.

"This year we are also going to have a pair of overnight trips in the season," continued Shehorn. "The first might be one of the tougher weekends for the season, as we head to Bridgeport for a Friday afternoon doubleheader and then turn around and head to Dominican on Saturday."

The other overnight trip will occur when the Wildcats to North Carolina to battle Chowan on April 1. The final nonconference opponent the Wildcats will face comes in the final doubleheader of the regular season, when they head to Dowling on April 28.

Inside the CACC, Wilmington will welcome Holy Family, Post, Concordia, University of the Sciences, and Bloomfield to Asbury field for conference doubleheaders throughout the season. The Wildcats will head to Chestnut Hill, Dominican, Philadelphia, Goldey-Beacom, Nyack, Georgian Court, and Caldwell to round out the road campaign.

The CACC Tournament is once again hosted by Georgian Court and will start on Thursday, May 1. The top eight teams throughout the regular season head to the CACC Tournament, with the hopes of gaining the conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. The Wildcats were the No. 3 seed in last year's tournament.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Philadelphia University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire to take a 94-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup over Wilmington University on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

With the win, the Rams' (8-3, 6-0 CACC) head coach Tom Shirley earned his 500th coaching victory at Philadelphia University. He is now in his 25th season at the helm of the Rams, his 33rd overall. He has a career total of 649 victories.

Sophomore Tiaja Harrold tied the single game record with eight steals while also scoring 10 points and dishing out a team high four assists in helping the Wildcats (5-10, 2-6 CACC) fend off the Lions (3-11, 2-6 CACC) down the stretch. The Lions nearly overcame a 15 point halftime deficit, closing the gap to as few as two points in the final minute.

djl

LANTANA, Fla. - - The No. 17 ranked Wilmington University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season in a tough regional matchup against Southern New Hampshire, 7-2, to kick start the team's annual Florida Trip played at the Santaluces Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

In the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II East Region Poll, the Wildcats (5-1) were ranked No. 2 while the Penmen (6-3) followed directly behind at No. 3, and just outside the National Top 25 but received votes. The Wildcats moved up one spot to No. 17 in the national poll released prior to the start of Tuesday's competition.

The Penmen jumped out to a fast start in their second game of the day, taking a 2-1 lead after the first inning on the strength of a two-out home run, and a 4-1 lead after two complete innings.

The SNHU lead grew to 5-1 after a single run in the fourth before the Penmen added single runs in the sixth and again in the eighth to keep the Wildcats at an arm's reach.

Wilmington took an early lead after their first at-bat of the ball game, aided by a two-out double by senior Josh Hampton. Jon Castro hit a one-out single and stole second to start the rally before Hampton doubled him home for the quick, 1-0, lead.

Another two out rally produced the Wildcats' second run, coming in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Josh Swirchak walked with two the bases empty and two outs before advancing to second on a balk by Penmen starter Mike Robert. Hampton continued his hot start to the season with another base hit, this time a single to score Swirchak and bring the Wildcats to within three at 5-2.

But Robert shut down the Wildcats for the rest of the contest, allowing only two base runners for the duration of the game. He picked up his second win of the season, striking out 10 batters while walking five and allowing six hits.

Wildcat starter Jay Kluka went 3.1 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits. He struck out a pair while walking one batter. Tim Racek came on for two-thirds of an inning before Ryan Douglas came on in the fifth. Douglas tossed two innings, allowing an unearned run, before handing the ball off to Peter Monahan who finished out the remaining two innings.

The Wildcats were out hit, 14-6, in the contest, while also committing four errors along the way.

Wilmington will look to get back to its winning way on Wednesday night, as they head to Miami Gardens to take on one of the premier NAIA programs in the country in St. Thomas (Fla.). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be followed live via St. Thomas' athletic department.

SUBJECT: Southern Connecticut State Sweeps Doubleheader, 11-3 and 6-5, From Wilmington Softball on Day Three in Florida

Clermont, Fla. - - A late game comeback fell a run short in the nightcap for the Wilmington University softball as Southern Connecticut State swept a doubleheader, 11-3 and 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Hancock Park.

Playing their third and fourth games in less than 24 hours, the Wildcats (2-6 overall) struggled out of the gates in each contest as Southern Connecticut State (6-1) scored multiple runs earl to take command of each contest.

The Owls jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in game one after the first two innings, responding the to the Wildcats' two run top of the first with three runs of their own in the bottom half. The Wildcats tallied a run in the top of the second to tie the game, but the Owls took the wind out of Wilmington's sails with a four run bottom of the second to retake the lead.

After a scoreless third inning, the Owls added to their lead by putting another four spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Southern Connecticut State starter Jessica Van Alphen then shut the Wildcats down in order in the top of the fifth, bringing the eight run rule into effect.

Michelle Panasiti put the Wildcats on the board in the top of the first, singling to center to score Miranda Pedersen who hit a two-out double. Jen Fischbach followed with an RBI single to right, putting the Wildcat in front 2-0 after a half inning. A fielding error in the top of the second allowed Shannon McMahon to score after she reached by singling into left field.

Ashley Bennett was the only Wildcat to record multiple hits, going 2-for-2 in the opening game.

The Owls again jumped out to a large lead early in the nightcap, scoring all six runs in the first three innings. A four run second inning gave Southern Connecticut State a 5-0 lead before another single run in the third brought the score to 6-0 after two and a half innings.

That's when the Wildcats started a rally, putting their own four runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Three straight fielding errors by the Owls allowed the Wildcats to load the bases without recording an out. Another error off the bat of Fischbach gave the Wildcats their first run of the inning before Panasiti singled into center for two more runs. Rice Fazio capped the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to center, deep enough to score Fischbach from third to bring the Wildcats to within 6-4 after three full innings.

The next three innings remained scoreless for both squads before the Wildcats started another rally in their final at-bat. Cambria Ziemba started the rally with a one-out single to left, followed by another single by Pedersen. With runners on first and second, Fischbach doubled to left field, scoring Ziemba and putting the tying run on third base with only one out. But the Owls escaped by getting a ground ball double play to the shortstop, tagging the runner going to third before throwing over to first to end the contest.

Both Fischbach and Panasiti collected two RBI in the nightcap while eight separate Wildcats recorded one hit each in the game. Fischbach also tossed the final 5.2 innings of game two, giving up one run on four hits in the no decision.

The Wildcats get a much deserved day off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday to begin their final three days of games in Florida. They will face Alderson-Broaddus at the National Training Center at 11 a.m. before heading to Winter Park, Fla. to play at Rollins at 5 p.m.

SUBJECT: Late Game Rallies Allow Wilmington Softball to Sweep Felician in CACC Opener at Asbury Field

DATE: March 15, 2014

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Late game dramatics allowed the Wilmington University softball team come back and sweep a doubleheader from Felician in both team's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opening games on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field.

The Wildcats (5-11, 2-0 CACC) scored two runs in the bottom of the first in game one to come back and earn the 7-6 victory before a three run bottom of the sixth gave the team a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

Playing in their first games at Asbury Field in 2014, the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Felician (4-9, 0-2 CACC) after the first two innings before the Golden Falcons fought back to take a 5-4 lead after the top of the sixth inning.

Now trailing, the Wildcats retaliated with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Miranda Pedersen and Michelle Panasiti walked with one out to the tying run in scoring position. Jen Fischbach lined a ball down the left field line, skimming off the left fielders' glove to allow Pedersen to tie the game at 5-5.

Felician came back in the top of the seventh to once again take the lead, as a pair of walks and a single through the left side scored the go-ahead run.

The Wildcats were able to keep the deficit to one run after the top of the seventh and responded with a rally of their own in the bottom half. Cambria Ziemba started the seventh inning off with a walk, before beating the throw at second base after a sacrifice bunt from Shannon McMahon. Now with the bases loaded and one out, Pedersen was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run before Kelsey Doherty scored the game winning run on a wild pitch.

Doherty and Panasiti led the Wildcats with two hits apiece in the first game, with Panasiti hitting two doubles and knocking in two runs. Doherty scored three of the seven runs in the first game.

Jen Fischabach relieved starter Chelsea Botsch with one out in the sixth inning, tossing the final 1.2 innings while only allowing one run on one hit, picking the win to improve to 2-2 on the year.

The night cap was knotted at 1-1 heading into the fifth inning before a two-out wild pitch allowed the Golden Falcons to score the go-ahead run and take a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats received a leadoff double from Meghan Logullo in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the senior was left stranded at third base as the fifth inning came to a close.

Reliever Colby Wyatt worked around a two-out fielding error in the top of the sixth inning to keep the game at 2-1. The Wildcats used the momentum to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Katrina Swank started the rally by reaching first after being hit by a pitch with one out. Ziemba worked a work to put runners on first and second before the Golden Falcons recorded the second out of the inning on a strikeout. Doherty stepped in and hit a 2-1 pitch to right for a single, scoring Swank with the tying run without a throw.

Now with runners on second and third, Logullo hit a sharp ground ball up the middle which was stopped on a diving play by the shortstop. Logullo reached first with the single, while Ziemba scored the go-ahead run and Doherty never stopped as she rounded third and headed for home. Doherty slid past the tag of the catcher, touching home with her hand to give the Wildcats a late 4-2 lead.

Wyatt stepped back onto the rubber in the bottom of the seventh and shut down the Golden Falcons on three ground balls, picking up her first collegiate victory.

Logullo batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Wildcats, while Doherty, Fischbach, Swank, and Ziemba rounded out the team's six hits with one each. Wyatt pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Wildcats, not allowing a hit while facing eight batters.

The Wildcats take to the road for their next three doubleheaders, staying in the CACC for their next contest on Wednesday. The team heads to Chestnut Hill for a pair of games starting at 2:30 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. - - Junior Katie Spence's free-position shot with under nine minutes remaining broke a late game tie, allowing Wilmington University to squeak by Chestnut Hill, 13-11, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Chestnut Hill (0-7, 0-2 CACC) rallied from a four goal deficit in the second half to tie the match at 11-11 with 9:36 to play in regulation, but Spence tallied back-to-back goals, the game-winner with 8:37 to play, to give Wilmington (3-3, 2-0 CACC) the two-goal victory.

The Wildcats made it a habit of jumping out to multiple goal leads throughout the course of the game, but the Griffins came back after every rally, taking their only lead, 5-4, midway through the first half.

Maddie Hewitt put the Wildcats ahead, 4-1, with her second goal of the game with 19:14 to play in the first half, but the Griffins scored four unanswered goals to take a brief 5-4 lead with 9:56 to go before the break.

Hewitt started another run for the Wildcats, as she knotted the game with her eighth goal of the season with 8:25 to play before Penelope Fantis scored her second goal of the game to give the Wildcats a 6-5 lead with 3:28 showing on the scoreboard. Megan Keffer and Ashley Kroll made it four consecutive goals for the home team, before Chestnut Hill's Courtney Weidner ended the run and the first half scoring with a mark with 29 seconds remaining, bringing the halftime score to 8-6.

Wilmington jumped out quickly in the second half with the first two goals, as Rebekah McCurry got on the board, followed by Spence's second goal of the game, putting the Wildcats ahead 10-6.

The Griffins didn't roll over, however, as they made a run of their own, scoring three straight and five of the next six goals in the game to bring the contest to a standstill with 9:36 remaining in regulation.

But Spence converted on her free-position shot with 8:37 showing on the board to give the Wildcats the lead for good. She capped the scoring with her fourth goal of the game with 3:09 to play, icing the contest. The Wildcats' goalkeeper Corinne Dries picked up a ground ball after a caused turnover by Fantis and the Wildcats executed their final clear attempt before running the final minute of play out in the offensive zone.

Spence led the way with four goals and an assist for five points, while Hewitt added a hat trick as well, scoring three goals on the afternoon. Dries picked up the win in goal for the Wildcats, making nine stops.

The Griffins were led by Lea Sanders hat trick, while Alicia Herbert and Emorie Keimig tallied two goals apiece. Keimig finished with a team high four points, tallying two assists as well. Chestnut Hill's net-minder Katie Joe Lang recorded 11 saves in goal, but was given the loss.

The Wildcats finish their four game home stand with a 2-2 record, and take the road for the first time since March 5 for their next contest. They head to Georgian Court for another CACC South Division game on Thursday with the opening draw slated for 4:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Meghan Logullo's Eighth Inning Walk-Off Single Gives Wilmington Softball Sweep of USciences

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Senior Meghan Logullo capped a late game rally in the nightcap for the Wilmington University softball team, hitting a walk-off single in game two against the University of the Sciences to pick up the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep, 8-4 and 2-1, on Monday at Asbury Field.
Logullo's two out single capped the Wildcats' (19-17, 11-5 CACC) comeback in game two, as they scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs before finishing the comeback in the eighth. The Devils (6-22, 5-13 CACC) scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning but couldn't find the final out in the seventh inning.
With one out in the ninth, Colby Wyatt singled through the left side to put a runner on base. USciences were able to get the second out at second base on a bunt by Chelsea Botsch, but Botsch used her speed well on the base paths. Cambria Ziemba singled to put Botsch on second base, before Botsch executed a delayed steal of third base.
Trying to recover, the Devils' Katie Dickson threw down to third base, but the ball skipped of Kelsey Doherty's helmet as she was standing in the batters box and into left field. Botsch came home with the tying run to force extra innings.
With two outs and the bases empty, Ashley Bennett started an eighth inning rally with a double down the right field line, just out of the reach of a diving Kiersten Badzgon near the foul line. Logullo then stepped in and sent a 1-1 pitch over the head of the second baseman, allowing pinch runner Katrina Swank to score easily from second base.
In the opener, the Wildcats spotted the Devils two runs in the top of the third before getting on the board in the home half of the inning. Botsch was at it again on the base paths as she stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catch for the Wildcats' first run.
The offense poured it on in the next two innings, taking the lead on a two-run homer to dead center by Bennett, putting the Wildcats in front, 3-2.
The Devils came back to tie the game with a single run in the top of the fifth inning, but the home team responded with a five run home half to grab control of the opening game for good.
Kelsey Doherty started the scoring with an RBI triple before Shannon McMahon brought her home with an RBI single to right center. Now with two outs, Logullo doubled in two more runs, hitting the gap in left center. Miranda Pedersen followed with a double down the right field line, bringing the fifth run to the plate for the Wildcats.
Wyatt then came on for the Wildcats and tossed the final two innings to start the doubleheader with a victory. Brooke Lachette tossed the fourth and fifth inning for the Wildcats, picking up the win and improving to 2-2 on the year.
Botsch and Bennett led the Wildcats with three hits a piece on the day, as Botsch went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the opener and Bennett batted 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
Stephanie Sarris went all eight innings in game two, striking out four batters while only allowing one run on six hits and three walks. The senior is now 9-6 on the season.
The Wildcats head to Chestnut Hill on Thursday to wrap up play on the week before taking Easter Weekend off. Thursday's doubleheader in Philadelphia is scheduled for a 2:30 first pitch.

SUBJECT: Wilmington University Holds its Fifth Annual Athletics Academic All-Star Banquet with Guest Speaker Raheem Brock
DATE: April 13, 2014
djl
NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Now in its fifth year of existence, the Wilmington University athletics department introduced 58 student-athletes as Academic All-Start on Sunday night at it annual Athletics Academic All-Star Banquet in the Audrey K. Doberstein Admissions Center Auditorium.
After dinner, the student-athletes and guests were treated by a visit from former Temple University and NFL player Raheem Brook who spoke to the audience. A Super Bowl winner with the Colts and NFC West Division winner with the Seahawks, Brock spoke to the student-athletes, parents, coaches, and administration in attendance about the trials ad tribulations he had to overcome as a young boy growing up in Germantown, Pa., in order to graduate high school and be accepted to Temple.
Brock continued his inspirational message for the students about overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals, and to also set new goals as life always changes. After Temple, Brock had one dream realized when he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2002 NFL draft, but needed to make new set of goals as the hometown team couldn't sign him.
Brock would spend the next eight years as a Colt, learning from NFL legends such as Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, and Dwight Freeney. In part of his time as a Colt, Brock earned a Super Bowl ring winning the NFL's Championship in 2006.
After continuing to learn all that he could from head coach Tony Dungy, Brock was signed by the Seattle Seahawks where his goals and passions turned from learning all that he could, to teaching younger players all that he knew. He then told the audience of such experiences such as the Marshawn Lynch "Earthquake Game" in the 2010 playoffs.

SUBJECT: Wildcats Respond in Nightcap to Split Wacky CACC Softball Doubleheader, 2-13 and 11-1, with Post
DATE: April 22, 2014
djl
NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University softball team sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning of game two, responding from dropping game one, 13-2, to take game two, 11-1, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Post at Asbury Field on Thursday.
In a wacky doubleheader between two of the top teams in the CACC, the Eagles (20-18, 16-6 CACC) put 13 runs on the board in two innings of game one, before the Wildcats (22-18, 14-6 CACC) scored all 11 runs in two innings in game two to earn the split.
After going down in order in the top of the first inning, Post put five runs on the board in the top of the second, using four walks and three hits to take a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats started chopping at the large deficit, scoring a run in the third as Cambria ZIemba singled home Chelsea Botsch who hit a one-out triple. They made it 5-2 with another run in the fourth inning, getting an RBI single from Botsch, scoring Meghan Logullo from second base.
But the Eagles retaliated with two outs in the fifth inning, as a bases loaded double started a string of seven consecutive two out hits. The Eagles put eight on the board in the fifth, using eight hits and a pair of hit-by-pitches to start the inning.
Post's Kaitlin Derby picked up the win while pitching all five innings in the first game, walking one while allowing two runs on seven hits.
Having only thrown 78 pitches in the first game, Derby started in the circle for the Eagles in the second game as well. But the Wildcats were ready for the hurler, as they sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring eight runs on nine hits.
Botsch, Ziemba, and Colby Wyatt started the inning off with three straight singled, as Wyatt's scored Botsch with the game's first run. Michelle Panasiti loaded the bases with a bunt base hit, allowing Kelsey Doherty to knock in another run with a single into right field. Jen Fischbach knocked in a pair on an RBI single to left. Again with the bases loaded, Ziemba doubled down the line in left field, putting two more on the board for the Wildcats. A fielding error on a sharp grounder by Wyatt brought home the final run of the first inning for the Wildcats, giving the home team a quick 8-0 lead.
Game two starter Stephanie Sarris didn't allow a hit until the third inning and didn't allow a run until the top of the fifth. She improved to 11-6 on the year, striking out nine batters with only allowing four hits.
Kelsey Doherty doubled in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, followed by an RBI single by Logullo to put the Wildcats ahead 11-0 and in line for the eight-run rule after four and a half innings of play.
Botsch went 4-for-7 from atop the Wildcat lineup on Thursday, while Ziemba went 3-for-4 form the number two spot. The two batters tallied four runs on the afternoon, sparking the lineup once again.
Doherty tallied three RBI in game two while Ziemba, Wyatt, and Fischbach each finished with two RBI in the win.
The Wildcats take to the road for their next two doubleheaders as they head to NFCA No. 10 Caldwell on Thursday before heading to Dominican on Friday. The Wildcats return to Asbury Field on Saturday for a doubleheader against Bloomfield for Senior Day.

SUBJECT: Walk-Off Homer Closes Out Wilmington Softball's Regular Season, as Dowling Sweeps the Wildcats
DATE: April 28, 2014
djl
BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University softball team closed out the 2014 regular season with a pair of losses on the road at Dowling, 5-8 and 6-8, on Monday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.
The losses drop the Wildcats season total to 24-24 as they prepare for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference starting on Thursday. Dowling needed a three-run walk-off home run in game two to secure the sweep to finish its regular season at 24-23 overall.
The Wildcats fell behind early in game one, needing to climb out of a 5-0 hole after the first two innings of play.
The offense got on track in the top of the fourth as Ashley Bennett smacked a two-run shot to left for her team leading sixth home run of the season.
But the Golden Lions responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the momentum in the game, taking an 8-2 lead.
A Cambria Ziemba triple scored two runs in the top of the fifth while a Colby Wyatt sacrifice fly cut the Wildcat deficit to 8-5 in the fifth, making it game once more.
Dowling starter Erika Nogan shut the Wildcats down in the top of the sixth, however, before Alisa Fjelstad picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning to close out game one.
The Wildcats were the ones to jump out to an early lead in game two, getting an RBI single from Wyatt as Ziemba scored from second after reaching on an error.
Wyatt was at it again in the third inning, ash she singled down the left field line, scoring both Shannon McMahon and Ziemba for a 3-0 lead.
The lead grew to 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning as the Wildcats continued to put runs on the board. With runners on second and third, Ziemba hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the inning's first run before Wyatt added an RBI double down the left field line to score Meghan Logullo.
But the Golden Lions stole the momentum in the home half of the fourth, as a two-run triple put Dowling on the board.
The home team continued to come back in the bottom of the fifth as a two-run homer by Crystal Tarango cut the Wildcats' lead to 5-4 with two innings to play.
Another homer in the sixth tied the game for the Golden Lions before the Wildcats took the lead once more with a two-out run in the top of the seventh.
With pinch runner Kelsey Doherty on third, the Dowling catcher threw the ball away on a pick off attempt, allowing the go-ahead run to come in and score for the Wildcats.
Back-to-back walks put the first two runners on base for the Golden Lions in the bottom of the seventh. With Wyatt back in the circle for the Wildcats, the freshman picked up a strikeout in an attempt to work out of the jam, but Tarango hit her second homer of the game to give the Golden Lions an 8-6 victory.
Wyatt led the Wildcats with three hits and four RBI in game two alone while Logullo batted 3-for-6 with three runs scored in the doubleheader.
The Wildcats are back in action with the start of the CACC Tournament, as they earned the No. 5 seed for the upcoming, double elimination tournament on Thursday. They will play No. 4 seed Holy Family in the first game with the time to be determined. The CACC Tournament will be played in Lakewood, N.J., hosted by Georgian Court.

DATE: May 1, 2014
djl
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - The 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Tournament begins on Friday at Georgian Court University with Wilmington earning the No. 5 seed squaring off against No. 4 Holy Family at 12 p.m. on Field 2.
The CACC Tournament features the top eight teams throughout the regular season in a double elimination type tournament, with the winner being crowned on Sunday, May 4. The CACC Tournament winner earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament.
All games scheduled for field 1 will be video streamed via College TV Ticket. Links for the broadcast can be found on the CACC Softball Tournament Home Page at http://www.caccathletics.org/sports/sball/2013-14/championship.
Scouting the No. 5 Wilmington University Wildcats
The Wildcats secured the No. 5 seed for the tournament with a doubleheader sweep over Bloomfield on Saturday, April 26 on Senior Day at Asbury Field. After a five game winning streak, the Wildcats ran into a slump to close out the regular season, losing seven of their last 10 games overall.
Seniors Stephanie Sarris and Meghan Logullo, as well as sophomore Ashley Bennett were named Second Team All-CACC earlier this week after leading the Wildcats to a 16-10 CACC record.
Sarris carried the pitching staff with a 2.28 earned run average, finishing fifth in the CACC. Her 106 strikeouts rank second in the CACC as she has struck out a season high nine batters in three separate games. Sarris' 12-8 record in the circle is the third most amount of wins in the conference.
Bennett belted a team high six home runs while hitting .301 for the season. Her 24 RBIs are tied with Michelle Panasiti's 24 for most on the team.
Logullo anchored the outfield by playing all 48 games in center field, batting .283 on the year. She has four doubles, a triple and 22 RBI while scoring 17 more on the year.
Kelsey Doherty leads the team with a .345 batting average, five triples, 32 runs scored, 18 stolen bases, and 50 hits while Colby Wyatt has come on strong down the stretch to finish with a .344 batting average. Panaisiti leads the team with 11 doubles while Jen Fischbach is the only other Wildcat in double figures with 10.
Scouting the No. 4 Holy Family University Tigers
The Tigers eared the No. 4 seed with a 26-14 overall record and 17-9 record in the CACC. They come into the tournament splitting each of their last four doubleheaders, and 4-6 in their last 10 games overall. In each of the splits, the Tigers won the first game before dropping game two.
Holy Family placed five student-athletes on the All-CACC teams, led by redshirt senior Danielle McDevitt's First Team All-CACC accolades. AnnMarie Dalton was voted Second Team All-CACC while Kelsi Bunda, Brianna Scotto, and Bailey Walters garnered Honorable Mention recognition.
McDevitt lead the Tigers with a .440 batting average, ranking fifth in the CACC. She has four doubles and two triples as a part of her 51 hits on the year to go along with 28 runs scored and 16 RBI.
Erin Corrado's eight home runs ranks third in the CACC while her 34 RBI is good enough for ninth in the CACC. She is batting .283 with five doubles and 21 runs scored.
Bailey Walters leads the staff with a 1.79 earned run average while going 11-3 in the circle. She has three complete game shutouts on the year in 93.2 innings of work to go along with 67 strikeouts and 30 walks. Rachael Alligood also threw against the Wildcats in the regular season, finishing the year with a 7-3 record and a 3.21 earned run average. Amanda Paredes made 12 starts and has a 6-3 record, striking out 58 batters while only walking 13 in 83 innings of work.
All-Time Series
Friday will be the 24th meeting between the two programs since the Wildcats joined the NCAA ranks for the 2005 season. With the sweep earlier this season, the Tigers hold a 14-9 advantage in the all-time series.
The Tigers have taken four straight in the regular season but the Wildcats defeated the Tigers last year in the CACC Tournament. In 2012, the Wildcats swept the Tigers in the regular season but Holy Family took the important game in the CACC Tournament.
All-Time in CACC Tournament
It is the eighth time in the past 10 seasons the Wildcats earned a spot in the CACC Tournament.
Since joining the ranks of the NCAA in 2005, the Wildcats have only missed two CACC Tournament (2006 and 2010). The Wildcats have won two games in the double-elimination tournament on three separate occasions (2007, 2011, and 2012). They have an overall record of 7-14 in seven CACC Tournaments, going 2-2 last season.

SUBJECT: Long Ball Sends No. 5 Wilmington Softball to CACC Tournament Championship with 6-0 Win Over No. 3 Post
DATE: May 3, 2014
djl
LAKEWOOD,
N.J. - - For the first time in program history, the Wilmington
University softball team will play for a Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference Tournament Championship, defeating third seeded Post
University, 6-0, in the winner's bracket game on Saturday afternoon at
Georgian Court University.
The win propels the Wildcats (27-24
overall) to the championship on Sunday at 11 a.m., where they will
square off against second seeded and host Georgian Court. The Lions won
three elimination games on Saturday, defeating Post in the bottom of the
seventh to advance to the championship on Sunday.
The fifth seeded
Wildcats were the visitors once again, squaring off against a higher
seed for the third time this tournament. That benefitted the Wildcats
once again as they jumped out to a lead in the early going, this time in
the top of second inning to hold the momentum.
Using a pair of hits
and three runs, the Wildcats put four on the board in the top of the
second inning, all coming from one swing of the bat.
With one out,
Miranda Pedersen singled into left field and advanced to second as the
throw back into the infield got away. Michelle Panasiti put runners on
first and third by reaching on another Post (24-21) error before a Becca
Stanley walk loaded the bases.
Kelsey Doherty quickly erased the 0-0
score as she took the first pitch she saw and deposited it over the
fence in straight away center for the grand slam, giving the Wildcats a
4-0 lead and the momentum in the game.
Post had its opportunities to
get on the board in the game, but left the bases loaded in the third,
one runner on in the fourth, and two more in the bottom of the fifth.
The
Wildcats added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning as the
long ball aided the visitors once again. Panasiti led off the inning
with a solo shot down the line in left, with the only doubt if t was
going to stay fair. The ball stayed in play, giving Panasiti her fourth
homer of the year.
Panasiti was at it again in the top of the sixth,
as she went to the same spot of the field, this time doubling into the
corner in left, chasing pinch runner Shannon McMahon from first to make
it 6-0 for the Wildcats.
From there, it was all starter Stephanie
Sarris as she shut down the Eagles in order in both the sixth and
seventh innings to earn her third complete game win in a row in the CACC
Tournament. The complete game shutout was the fourth of the year for
the senior.
Doherty, Pedersen, and Panasiti collected two hits each
for the Wildcats while Zambria Ziemba and Jen Fischbach added one hit
each to round out the offense for the Wildcats.
Sarris struck out four more batters while only allowing five hits, tallying 16 strikeouts and three wins in the CACC Tournament.
The
Lions defeated Holy Family in 10 innings to start the day before
defeating Dominican in another elimination game. The Lions then took on
Post in the CACC Tournament Semifinal, and needed a run in the bottom of
the seventh to earn the victory after the Eagles tied the game with two
runs in the top half.
The run continues on Sunday, as the Wildcats
and the Lions will battle for the CACC Tournament. Video broadcast of
the game can be seen

SUBJECT: Wilmington Golf Slips to Seventh After Day Two at NCAA Super Regional
DATE: May 6, 2014
djl
CHARLESTON,
W.Va. - - Starting the day on the back nine, the Wilmington University
golf team stumbled on the front nine after the turn on day two of the
NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Super Regional at Edgewood Country Club
on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats were even-par as a team at the
turn, but finished with a 299, 15 over-par on the afternoon. The
Wildcats now sit in seventh after two round of play with a two-day total
of 292, +24 for the tournament.
Freshman Sam Clark paced the
Wildcats on Tuesday, finishing with a 73, two-over par on the day. He
bounced back from bogeying the 10th, the first hole of the day, by
hitting a birdie on 14. Clark finished the back nine with four straight
pars to make the turn with an even par 37.
The freshman went
one-under par with a birdie on the par-three second hole, and again went
one-under with a birdie on the par-four seventh. But a triple-bogey on
the eighth hole, 17th of the day, put Clark two-over par before he
finished his day with a par and a two-over score on Tuesday.
Senior
Jerry Temple posted a birdie on the par-five 16th to pull back to even
on the back nine. He made the turn with an even-par 37 but bogeyed holes
two, six, and nine, finishing his day with a three-over 74.
Senior
Tomasz Pulsakowski had an eventful first nine holes on Tuesday, as he
bounced back from bogeys on holes 11, 12, and 15 by hitting birdies on
14, 16, and 17 to close the back nine with an even-par 37. After the
turn however, it was a bogey on the second hole, a double-bogey on five,
and a bogey on nine that resulted in a 75, four-over par score for the
senior.
Junior Alexander Lautenschlaeger hit birdies on 15 and 16 but
finished his first nine holes with a double-bogey and a bogey on 17 and
18, respectively, closing the back nine with a 40, three-over par
score. He birdied the par-five fifth but bogeys on three, four, six, and
nine brought the junior's score to 77, six-over par on the day.
Senior
Andrew Baldo birdied the par-five 16 to get back to even on the back
nine, but recorded only two pars on the front nine to have his score
slip. Bogey's on one, two, and nine, in addition to triple bogeys on
three, five, and eight, hurt the senior, as he finished with an 85,
14-over par in the second round.
Temple and Pulsakowski lead the
Wildcats after two rounds of play, sitting in a tie for 19th overall in
the tournament. Clark is now tied for 36th overall while Lautenschlaeger
sits in a tie for 68th overall. After two rounds, Baldo is 90th
overall.
St. Thomas Aquinas made the biggest move of the day, scoring
a 273, 11-under par as a team to move into first place. It was a 20
stroke difference from the first round for the Spartans, as they now
lead Indiana (Pa.) by two strokes. IUP shot a 274, 10-under par on
Tuesday, also shooting 20 strokes better than day one to sit in second
with a 568.
Adelphi currently sits in third with a 581 two-round
scored while Le Moyne is fourth with a 582 two-day score. Host
Charlestion is fifth with a 588, followed by West Chester (591) and
Wilmington (592).
The top three teams after three round advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Wilmington
will look for a low score in the third and final round of the Super
Regional on Wednesday, starting on the 10th hole in the final group of
the day. The tee-times start at 12:50 p.m. for the Wildcats.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Suffers 1-0 Setback to No. 20 LIU Post in East Regional Tournament
DATE: May 9, 2014

WEST
HAVEN, Conn. - - Opening the NCAA Division II East Regional I
Tournament the Wilmington University softball team suffered a 1-0
setback to #20 LIU Post on Friday at the UNH Softball Field, hosted by
the University of New Haven.
Playing in its first NCAA Regional
contest after capturing their first Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference Tournament Championship last weekend, the Wildcats (28-25
overall) were seeded eighth and pitted against the East Region's top
seed and 20th ranks LIU Post (46-8 overall). The Wildcats didn't back
down, but it was a sixth inning run that sent the Pioneers to a victory.
Junior
Kelsey Doherty led off the game with a single back up the middle and
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cambria Ziemba, but LIU Post
pitcher Liz Weber settled in and induced a comebacker to the circle and a
pop up to end the inning without any damage.
Senior Stephanie Sarris
held the Pioneers in check all game long, stranding two runners on base
in the second before tossing 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth
frames.
The Wildcats left Becca Stanley on second in the top of the sixth before the Pioneers went to work in the bottom half.
Angela
Carmine started the inning with a single before moving to second on a
sacrifice bunt from Alexis Gonzalez. Cleanup hitter Nicole Hagenah
doubled to left, easily scoring Carmine for the game's lone run. Sarris
battled back and induced a pair of foul outs to first baseman Katrina
Swank to keep the damage to 1-0.
Meghan Logullo kept the Wildcats
alive with a two-out single in the top of the seventh, but Jen Fischbach
was robbed of a hit as third baseman Maria Palmeri made a great
defensive play to her left on the sharp hit ball, tossing it over to
first for the final out of the contest.
Sarris fell to 16-9 overall
on the season after tossing all six innings while allowing a run on five
hits. She struck out one batter in the game while not allowing a walk
in the effort.

game shutout, allowing two hits while not picking up any strikeouts but
also not walking any batters.

Hampshire upset fourth seeded and host New Haven, 9-5, in the second
game of the day.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - For the fifth consecutive year, the Wilmington University men's athletic programs claimed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Alfred R. Restaino, Sr. Cup, while the women's programs placed sixth overall among the conference's 14 schools, as announced by CACC commissioner Dan Mara.
The cups are awarded annually to the institutions that perform at the highest level in all CACC-sponsored sports. The point system used for the award takes into account each athletic program's finish in both the CACC 2013-2014 regular season and conference tournaments. Each institution receives a combined point total and the sum is then divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors.
Wilmington (11.85 total point average) claimed the men's Restaino Cup for the fifth-straight year on the strength of conference championships in cross-country, golf and the regular season title in baseball. The Wildcats amassed 59.25 points in the five sports the program sponsors. Wilmington claimed three of the eight possible men's championships that the conference offers.
The Wildcats also received a CACC Tournament semifinal appearance by the men's soccer team and a CACC Tournament runner-up award by the baseball team to boost their postseason numbers.

The CACC South division regular season title and an appearance in the CACC Tournament Semifinal round by the volleyball team also helped earn valuable points.
Philadelphia won the women's Restaino Cup with an average of 11.91 points, powered by the South Division regular season and tournament championship in lacrosse, the South Division regular season title in basketball and tied for the South Division regular season crown in volleyball. In addition, PhillyU finished second in the cross-country championship and third in the inaugural track and field championship. The program advanced to at least the semifinals in five of the six women's CACC tournaments.

"I am grateful to the NCAA for this scholarship because it will allow me to ease the financial burden on my family and enable me to focus on completing my degree and fulfilling my dream of becoming a teacher," Biddle said.
Biddle, who completed her fourth year of competition this past fall for the Wildcats, will be student teaching at an elementary school in the Claymont School District this fall to complete her Elementary Education: K-6 degree from Wilmington University.
This pas year, Biddle led the Wildcats to a 23-10 overall record and a second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division Regular Season title. She finished with 1.98 kills per set as a senior, hitting a CACC third best .281 above the net. "I enjoyed my time as a student-athlete at Wilmington and appreciate all the opportunities afforded to me by the University, athletics department, and volleyball program," Biddle continued. "It's a great honor to be nominated among so many worthy and outstanding candidates. It is a wonderful program offered by the NCAA, showing they truly do value the effort student-athletes put in during their time on the court and in the classroom."
Biddle carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average into this coming academic year.
The CACC had four members that were awarded a Division II Degree Completion scholarship, joining a pair from Holy Family University and one from Felician College. In all, NCAA Division II awarded 81 former student-athletes with a Degree Completion Scholarship.

Delaware improved to 5-0 on the season, and has opened the year with five consecutive wins for just the third time in school history and the first since 1970. Seton Hall, which had posted one-goal victories over the Blue Hens in each of the past two seasons, dropped to 1-1-1 on the campaign.

Just 37 seconds later Dipre unleashed a tremendous strike from 30 yards out that dropped just under the crossbar to put the Blue Hens in front for good.

"I think tonight was the best free college entertainment you will find within 100 miles," said UD head coach Ian Hennessy, a 1990 graduate of Seton Hall. "It was a passionate contest, the goals were fantastic, and the storylines were tremendous. I'm thrilled that we were able to stay undefeated and remain in the national rankings, which is where I feel this group belongs."

Delaware opened the scoring 17:14 into the match when sophomore All-American Guillermo Delgado collected a rebound off a block and blasted a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Blue Hens in front. However Seton Hall answered in the 34th minute as Victor Manosalvas headed home a cross from Mateusz Brela.

Delaware is back home on Sunday to host Saint Peter's at 1 p.m. at Grant Stadium. A victory would tie the Blue Hens for the best start in school history, matching the 1970 squad.

"It was also good to see Steven make his own comeback after hitting the post on a solid strike a minute prior to his goal. He was able to stick with it to score his first goal. All in all it was a good game. The second half was only good, not great, so we still have a lot to work on."
Zach Lee replaced starter Frank Hall in goal to start the second half for the Wildcats, and although he faced eight shots, the sophomore didn't need to make a save to secure the victory for the team. Hall made one first half save to earn the win in goal.
The Golden Rams outshot the Wildcats, 13-12, using an advantage of 8-3 in the second half to take over the stat sheet. Wilmington kicked more corners, 6-5, and put six shots on goal.
The Wildcats continue their stretch of six games in 10 days on Sunday as they travel to Dowling for another nonconference match. The opening kick is slated for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Offense Comes Alive as Wilmington Men's Soccer Downs Holy Family, 5-1, in CACC Opener
DATE: September 16, 2014
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team started the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference portion of its schedule off on the right foot, defeating Holy Family, 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The win is the fourth consecutive victory for the Wildcats (4-1, 1-0 CACC) after they dropped their season opener on September 6. Holy Family (1-2-2, 0-1-1 CACC) also lost for the first time since the season opener, going 1-0-2 since.
The offensive pressure started early for the Wildcats as Josh Fawssett got the scoring started with a goal in the fifth minute. Bruno Montini made a run down the left side and turned it in on the endline, putting a cross into the middle of the six-yard box to JJ Naiwo. Naiwo tapped it along to Fawssett who had an open goal as Richard Ongaro closed out on Naiwo.
Senior forward Pedro Moreira scored his first goal of the season to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead late in the second half. From atop the 'D' outside the 18-yard box, Moreira put the ball on his right foot and took a drive, beating Ongaro to his right side and just inside the post in the 37th minute.
Wilmington led 2-0 on the scoreboard and 13-1 in shots going into the halftime break.
In the second half, it was more of the same for the home team, as Lance Berry headed home his third goal of the season after a great cross into the box by Geoff Velasquez in the 64th minute.
Sophomore Jordon Ellison scored his first of the season in the 68th minute off a nice through ball to the right side from Jamie Burridge. Ellison held off his defender before putting a shot to the far post to make it 4-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
Naiwo was at it again in the 71st minute, receiving a cross from Joe Boulter on the back post. His left footed volley snuck under the diving the keeper for his first goal as a Wildcat and the 5-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Lee made a crucial save in the first half while the game was still 1-0, as Holy Family's Aiah Mbriwa found himself all alone in the box. Lee came out and cut off the angle of the shot, making the point black save to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard at that point.
The Tigers were able to strike late in the game however, as a defensive miscue led to a long range missile from Holy Family's Jamie Annobil in the 87th minute. But it was too little too late as the Wildcats hung on for the 5-1 victory.
Lee was needed to make two saves for his first win as a Wildcat while Ongaro made one save in the first half and Dylan Rutledge recorded two stops in the second half for the Tigers.
The Wildcats continue their stretch of six games in 10 days on Thursday, as they head to CACC foe Felician for a game under the lights. The game will start at 7 p.m. at the Lyndhurst Recreation Center.

LYNDHURST, N.J. - - It took over 80 minutes to find the back of the net but the Wilmington University men's soccer team finally solved Felician's goalkeeper, 1-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Thursday night at Lyndhurst Recreation Center.
The Wildcats (5-1, 2-0 CACC) extended their winning streak to five consecutive games with the victory, outshooting the Golden Falcons (0-6, 0-2 CACC), 11-5, but it was the final shot of the night for the visitors that proved to be the game winner.
Senior Pedro Moreira received the ball on the right side from Juan Bernal and his low rocket shot slipped through Golden Falcon netminder Anthony Tsouhnikas into the back of the net 80:40 into the match.
Wilmington outshot Felician, 8-4, in the first half, making Tsouhnikas make four stops in the opening 45 minutes to keep the clean sheet.
Tom Debenham challenged Tsouhnikas first with a header that was saved in the ninth minute before Vito Lima's shot was denied in the 16th minute. Back-to-back shots by Lima in the 19th and 20th minutes were also saved by the Felician goalkeeper, keeping Wilmington off the board in the first half.

NEWARK, Del. - - Leading by a pair at halftime, the Wilmington University women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Holy Family on Thursday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half, using the foot of redshirt freshman Loran Wyrough to tally both marks.

In her senior season of 2007, Malali became the second ever Wilmington student-athlete to be named First Team All-American after setting Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and Wilmington records of 60 points and 27 goals scored in a season.
