NEWARK, Del. - - Three first half goals led to the Wilmington University women's soccer team's second straight victory as it defeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Chestnut Hill, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats (2-4, 2-2 CACC) took the action to the Griffins (1-5, 1-3 CACC) early in the contest, using goals in the fourth, 33rd, and 45th minutes to take the momentum of the contest into the halftime break.
Redshirt freshman Loran Wyrough added to her team lead with her fourth goal to give the Wildcats a fast 1-0 lead just 3:26 into the match. Senior Chelsea Grace was in on the keeper after an excellent turn outside the 18-yard box. Griffin goalkeeper Samantha Pauls saved Grace's initial shot, but Wyrough was on the back post to stuff home the rebound opportunity.
Continuing to hold control in the contest throughout the first half, the Wildcats struck again in the 33rd minute. Using a foul 22 yards out of the left side of the 18-yard box, redshirt freshman Alexa Smalley blasted a ball over the wall and under the crossbar to score her first career goal at the 32:18 mark of the first half.
With under a minute to play in the half, the Wildcats took all the wind out of the Chestnut Hill sails as freshman Chandler Lages found herself in free on the keeper. Wyrough fed a through ball into the box to Lages who beat Pauls to her left side with only nine seconds showing on the scoreboard.
The Wildcats held a 10-2 shot advantage and took three corners in the first half to the Griffins' none.
Chestnut Hill came out fast in the second half however, putting the pressure on the Wildcats by scoring a goal in the 48th minute. The Griffins' Alissa Battaglia beat Wilmington goalkeeper Julia Brown to her right side, bringing the Griffins back into the contest.
The Griffins outshot the Wildcats, 7-6, in the second half, but couldn't draw any closer as Brown and the Wildcat defense held the visitors off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.
Brown recorded three saves in goal to earn her second straight victory for the Wildcats while Paul added to her CACC leading saves total with nine on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats will look to keep their winning streak going when they return to action on Thursday at the WU Athletics Complex. The team welcomes Dowling to Delaware for a nonconference matchup starting at 3:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Strong Serving and Early Leads Allow Wilmington Volleyball to Sweep Holy Family
DATE: October 3, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - - The hot serving and long early runs allowed the Wilmington University volleyball team to sweep Holy Family, 3-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the WU Athletics Complex on Friday night.
Set scores for the match were 25-16, 25-9, and 26-24.
Redshirt freshman Jessica Starr started the match off with seven straight points on her serve, getting an ace to put the team up 7-0 in the early going. Junior Shelby Henderson followed with four points on her serve, capping a 5-0 run to put the Wildcats (7-11, 4-2 CACC) ahead 12-1 in the first set.
The Wildcats held as large as a 17-3 lead before the Tigers (6-10, 4-2 CACC) started to come back. Although they scored 12 of the next 19 points, it was too little too late as Hannah Karas and Erin Bistany blocked a Tiger attack for the 25-16 first set win.
Henderson, Ales Siolos, and Starr powered the Wildcats to a 12-4 lead in the second set with their serves. Another string of four straight points, three of which came on Kasey Couch's serve, put the Wildcats ahead, 18-6, before Kaitlin DiGiacinto served the Wildcats to a 22-7 lead. Siolos gave the Wildcats a 23-8 lead before back-to-back kills from Allison Briley gave the Wildcats the 2-0 lead, 25-9.
In the tightest set of the even, the Wildcats had to fight off a late rally by the Tigers to earn the extra point victory. Tied at 9-9, Erin Bistany helped the Wildcats to a 14-9 lead with a pair of aces. But the Tigers battled back to within one at 17-16. A kill by Bistany and back-to-back attack errors by Holy Family gave the Wildcats match point, but the Tigers scored five straight points to tie the set, 24-24. DiGiacinto gave the Wildcats another match point and the home team took the victory with an attack error on Holy Family, 26-24.
Briley led the Wildcats with 10 kills, collecting a double-double with a team high 17 digs. DiGiacinto hit .389 on the night, collecting seven kills without an error on 18 swings. Bistany added seven kills on 13 swings, only committing two errors for a .385 attack percentage. As a team, the Wildcats hit .272 for the match, and a remarkable .500 attack percentage in the second set alone.
Siolos dished out 18 assists while Couch added 11 helpers on the night. Siolos and Henderson were the only other Wildcats with double digit digs, each collecting 11.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they welcome CACC North Division foe Caldwell to the WU Athletics Complex. The first serve is set for 12 p.m.

SUBJECT: Naiwo's Two Goals Help End Skid As Wilmington Men's Soccer Defeats Bloomfield, 3-1
DATE: October 11, 2014
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - The four-game skid came to a stop for the Wilmington University men's soccer team on Saturday, defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Bloomfield, 3-1, on the strength of Samuel Naiwo's two goals on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Wilmington (7-5, 4-3 CACC) outshot the Bears (3-8, 3-4 CACC), 11-4, for the match, using 16 corner kicks to keep the pressure on the visitors throughout the entire match.
Naiwo's first two-goal game of his Wilmington career came at a good time, ending a four-game skid and giving the Wildcats an outcome with more than one goal for the first time in four games as well.
The junior put the Wildcats on the board early in the contest, giving the home team the lead in the 16th minute. Jordon Ellison toe poked the ball ahead of him and into the box on the right side, allowing Naiwo to run onto it. Naiwo was able to beat Bloomfield goalkeeper Wilson Cisneros to the near side, sneaking the shot inside the near post for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half, the Wildcats struck again, capitalizing on one of their six corners in the first half. The initial threat was cleared out of the box on the corner opportunity, but Femi Akintunde was at the top of the 'D' to keep the ball in play. His long distance shot was redirected by senior Pedro Moreira and dribbled into the open net at the 33:25 mark of the match.
Moments later, however, the Bears were able to get one back, converting on a penalty kick opportunity following a foul in the box by Adrian Tash. Wilmington goalkeeper Frank Hall guessed correctly and got two hands on the penalty kick chance by Bloomfield's Rafique Roberts, but the ball squirted past Hall and into the net with 15:10 remaining in the first half.
A strong buildup from the mid-field resulted in Naiwo wide open at the top of the box early in the second half, and the junior buried home his second goal of the match. Ellison and Steven O'Connor teamed up with Naiwo to work the ball up the field and a perfect one-time pass from O'Connor found Naiwo in the box. Naiwo's third goal of the season came in the 51st minute of the match.
Naiwo's second half goal was more than enough for the Wildcats, as Hall was needed to make just two saves for the victory.
The Wildcats will look to keep the momentum from Saturday's match as they take to the road next week, first when they head to cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday. The opening draw is schedule for 3:30 p.m. in Wilmington.

SUBJECT: Wyrough Scores Hat Trick in Women's Soccer's 5-1 CACC Victory over Bloomfield
DATE: October 11, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team broke out with four goals in the second half, getting a hat trick from Loran Wyrough (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) to snap a five-game losing streak on Saturday, 5-1, against Bloomfield at the WU Athletics Complex.
Wyrough became the first Wildcat (3-9, 3-5 CACC) to score a hat trick since teammate Chelsea Grace scored three times against Chestnut Hill on October 17, 2012.
On a wet and chilly afternoon, Wyrough finally put the Wildcats on the board late in the first half despite outshooting the Bears (1-11, 1-7 CACC), 11-3, including multiple break-a-way chances.
Kellie MacIntosh's turnaround shot was saved at the doorstep by Bloomfield keeper Diana Vincentini with a minute left in the first half. Alexa Smalley took the ensuing corner. After a scramble in the box, the ball popped loose to Wyrough atop the 18-yard box and her shot found the back of the next with 31 seconds showing on the clock.
Wyrough was at it again shortly after the halftime break, scoring on a run to the near post after a cross and set up by Becky Sowers and Grace. Wyrough got just enough of it against the challenging keeper to have it trickle across the line just 53 seconds into the second period.
On one of the team's 10 corners on the afternoon, freshman Carin Essex-Arline headed home a corner kick to the near post by Grace, beating Vincentini high for her third goal of the season. Essex-Arline gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead in the 64th minute.
The Bears got a goal back less than two minutes later when Ashley Nolan scored on a long free kick from the left side, beating backup goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams at the far post.
But that would be as close as the Bears would get as Sierrah Taylor stretched the leas back out to three goals with her first collegiate career goal in the 75th minute. She took advantage of a misclear by Vincentini who had four Wildcats barreling down on her outside the 18-yard box. Jillian Porter played the ball to Taylor who slid it home in the empty net for the 4-1 lead.
Wyrough capped the scoring and her hat trick in the 85th minute, receiving a through ball down the middle from Taylor. Wyrough shot to her right and hit the inside of the post to secure the goal 84:36 into the match. She now has eight goals on the season.
Julia Brown started the match in net for the Wildcats, making one save in the first have to record the victory. Williams made two stops to secure the win for the Wildcats while playing the second half. Vincentini made nine saves for the Bears.
The Wildcats take to the road for their two games next week, first traveling to cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Wilmington, Del.

Set scores for the match were 25-13, 23-25, 25-10, and 32-30.
Briley's 20 kills were a season high for the Wildcats (10-11, 6-2 CACC) this season while DiGiacinto became the sixth Wildcat to ever reach 1,000 digs for their career, the second this season behind teammate Shelby Henderson. DiGiacinto's first dig of the match was the milestone dig for the junior, reaching it in the first set.
The Wildcats jumped all over the Bears (9-8, 6-2 CACC) in the first set, using DiGiacinto and Henderson's serve to gain an 11-1 advantage through the first 12 points. Continuing to lead, 21-13, Briley and Erin Bistany put down kills before a block by Hannah Karas and Bistany ended the first set, 25-13.
Wilmington scored the first four points of the second set and held a 15-8 lead after a service ace from Henderson, but that is when Bloomfield made its move. The Bears scored four straight and 8-of-11 to close the gap to 18-17. After a block gave the Wildcats a 21-18 lead, the Bears rattled off five straight points to steal a 23-21 lead in the game. The teams traded points the rest of the game, with Bloomfield getting a kill from Diannmarie Rivera to tie the match, 25-23.
The third set was even through the first 18 points, with neither team able to score more than two points in a row. A Bear attack error gave the Wildcats the 10-9 lead and the serve, and DiGiacinto rattled off six consecutive points on her serve, breaking the game open, 16-9. Henderson took the momentum and scored the final eight points of the game on her serve. Briley gave the Wildcats the 2-1 match lead with a kill at 25-10.
The fourth set went back and forth throughout the early part of the game. Trailing 20-18, the Wildcats scored three straight to grab a 21-20 lead, but the Bears scored three of the next four to retake a 23-22 set lead. Back-to-back Bear errors gave Wilmington match point, but Deandra Black and Jacquelyn Madlock blocked a DiGiacinto attempt to keep the Bears alive.
The Bears scored two straight to reach set point at 26-25, but the Wildcast responded with a kill from DiGiacinto and a Bear error to take a 27-26 lead. The Bears retook the lead 29-28 with back-to-back points but the Wildcats responded one last time. Trailing 30-29, Briley collected a solo block to start a string of three straight points to take the match. An attack error by Ashley Wright gave the Wildcats match point before Karas and Bistany teamed up for a block on match point to win the game, 32-30.
Briley hit .341 with her 20 kills, committing just five errors on 44 swings. DiGiacinto was the only other Wildcat with double digit kills, collecting 10.
DiGiacinto picked up the double-double with 16 digs while Henderson led the way with 22 pick-ups. Alex Siolos tacked on a double-double with 14 digs and 20 assists while Kasey Couch added 11 digs and finished with a double-double with 23 assists.
The Wildcats outblocked the Bears, 11-8, as Bistany paced the Wildcats at the net with a solo block and six block assists. Karas collected four block assists on the afternoon.

Set scores for the match were 25-27, 27-25, 25-20, and 25-20.
The win revenges a loss against Philadelphia from earlier this season and moves the Wildcats (13-12, 9-3 CACC) a full game ahead of the Rams (11-11, 8-4 CACC) in the loss column in the conference.

Now leading 19-17, the Wildcats scored four straight with kills from Allison Briley and Erin Bistany, a solo block from Bistany, and a service ace from Jessica Star to lead 23-17. A Philadelphia attack error gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead, 25-20.

A DiGiacinto kill gave the Wildcats match point at 24-15, but the Rams battled back with five straight points to make things interesting. NEWARK, Del. - - Out digging their opponent by 16, the Wilmington University used its defense to get past Post, 3-1, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference cross divisional action at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Set scores for the match were 25-20, 18-25, 25-22, and 25-19.
The Wildcats' (15-12, 11-3 CACC) Shelby Henderson picked up 28 digs to lead the back line, as the diggers and blockers forced Post's (14-10, 9-5 CACC) hitting into a .093 attack percentage for the afternoon.
A string of five straight points in the middle of the first set gave the Wildcats a 20-11 lead before the Eagles started to chip away. The Eagles closed to within 22-18, but the Wildcats won three of the next five points to take the first set, 25-20, on a kill from Kasey Couch.
Post jumped out to a 8-2 lead in the second set before the Wildcats battled back to tied the game at 10-10. Again tied at 15-15, the Eagles scored five of the next six points to take control of the game and back-to-back points to close out the set, 25-18.
The third set was back and forth throughout, being tied as late at 14-14, and with Post holding a 20-18 late lead. Three straight points for the Wildcats gave the home team the lead before the Eagles tied it up once more at 22-22. But an Eagle service error sparked a string of three straight points as Allison Briley connected on a kill and then a solo block to finish the set, 25-22.
Wilmington again jumped out to a sizeable lead in the fourth set before the Eagles battled back to take a brief lead at 11-10. A block by Eile Harris and Kaitlin DiGiacinto started three consecutive points and a 13-11 lead. Still leading 20-19, the Wildcats closed out the set and the match with five straight points, using the service game of DiGiacinto and a kill by Henderson to claim the victory.
Erin Bistany led the offense with 14 kills and a .267 attack percentage while Briley added 13 kills and 12 digs for the double-double.
Alex Siolos collected her 10th triple-double of the season, picking up 10 kills with only three errors to hit .212 for the match, adding 11 assists and 11 digs for the feat.
Couch added another double-double for the Wildcats with 27 assists and 13 digs. Bistany helped the defense with four more block assists while Angele Collins added three block assists. Harris, DiGiacinto, and Briley each added one solo block.

NEWARK, Del. - - A fast start gave the Wilmington University women's soccer team a 3-1 victory over Nyack, sending the team's seniors off in style as they were honored prior to the game on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
It was the core of young players that put the Wildcats (4-11, 4-6 CACC) on the board, however, as freshman Carin Essex-Arline scored the game's first goal follow by a pair of goals by redshirt sophomore Jillian Porter to hold off Nyack (3-14, 3-8 CACC).
Essex-Arline put the Wildcats on the board first, putting home a rebound off the crossbar from Alexa Smalley in the ninth minute. Smally's shot form the left side of the 18-yard box skimmed off the cross bar and fell right to Essex-Arline on the back post. Essex-Arline slotted it home for her fourth goal of the season.
Porter gave the Wildcats a two-goal advantage prior to the halftime break after finding herself wide open in front of the goal following a cross from Chandler Lages. Wilmington led 2-0, 37:49 into the match.
Wilmington held a 10-1 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes, earning more corners, 3-0, as well.
Nyack cut the deficit in half with a goal off a corner in the 58th minute s Katherine Oldfield tapped in a cross from Jessica Short at the far post for her second goal of the season. But that would be as close as the Warriors would get in the match.
The Wildcats regained momentum and went ahead by two goals once more in the 85th minute, getting another insurance goal from Porter. Kim Richer played a through ball on the left side to Lages. Once getting to the ball in space, Lages played the ball into the ball to a wide-open Porter in front of the net who slotted it home for her second goal of the match.
Wilmington's Julia Brown made one save in goal for the victory while Nyack's Brianna Bianchi recorded seven saves in the loss.
The Wildcats outshot the Warriors, 17-4, for the match and earned more corners, 5-1.

SUBJECT: Ashley Kroll Sends Wilmington Women's Soccer into CACC Tournament with 2-1 Overtime Thriller Over Georgian Court
DATE: October 29, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - - The game turned in a matter of moments and it was Ashley Kroll that sent the Wilmington University women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Georgian Court, but more importantly, into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
After a calm 80 minutes of action in the regular season finale, the Lions (10-5-3, 7-4-1 CACC) struck first in the 83rd minute. But the Wildcats (6-11, 6-6 CACC) turned on the jets and quickly tied the match in the 85th minute.
Kroll's heroics came just 3:20 into the overtime period, as it was the only shot of the extra period. With a substitute waiting to check into the game for Kroll, she received a long through ball pass from Chelsea Grace just after she crossed midfield.
Kroll flew past the defense line and was in alone on the keep as she crossed into the penalty box, just left of the goal frame. Using her off foot, she put a ball over the charging Lion goalkeeper Casey O'Connor and into the back of the net. The only thing that was next was waiting for her teammates to meet her all the way across the field for the dog-pile.
The goal and the win give the Wildcats 18 points in the CACC and keeps them in seventh place. Goldey-Beacom, who also won today, slides into eighth place with 16 points, one point ahead of Dominican. Goldey-Beacom and Dominican play on Friday to determine the final CACC Tournament team and seeding.
The scoring started in the 83rd minute as the Lions countered off a six-yard kick from the Wildcats. Morgan Peacock got on the end of the Julia Brown six-yarder, playing a ball to Elizabeth Kroon in the middle of the field.
Kroon launched a ball from 25 yards out that snuck over Brown and into the corner of the net for the 1-0 lead 82:57 into the match.
The Wildcats battled back and tied the match on their next shot as Kroll found a wide-open Loran Wyrough in the middle of the six-yard box in the 85th minute. Wyrough scored her ninth goal of the season to tie the game 84:46 into the match.
The Wildcats were outshot, 20-8, for the match, but six of their eight shots were on frame. Georgian Court also earned more corners, 8-1, than the Wildcats.
Brown recorded eight saves for the Wildcats while O'Connor stopped four shots for the Lions.
The women's CACC Tournament Quarterfinal is set for Monday afternoon but the place is yet to be determined. The Wildcats could either be seeded seventh or eighth in the Tournament, depending on the outcome of Goldey-Beacom and Dominican's contest on Friday.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A late penalty kick sank the Wilmington University men's soccer team, 1-0, at Philadelphia in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season finale on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Rams (13-4-1, 9-2-1 CACC) clinched the CACC Regular Season Championship while the Wildcats (11-7, 7-5 CACC) solidified the sixth seed for next week's CACC Tournament.
Since Dominican won today's game against Bloomfield, the Wildcats will head to third seeded Concordia for the Quarterfinal on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
The Wildcats nearly got on the board in the early going on Friday as Tom Debenham's shot went off the cross bar just 1:57 into the match. The Wildcats put five shots on goal in the first half, but the Rams' Thomas Attamante came up with the save each time to keep the game scoreless heading into the halftime break.
The Rams had the same fate as the Wildcats did in the early going of the second half as Seiji Rose's shot went off the cross bar and an immediate header from Zach Brown was saved b Wilmington's goalkeeper Frank Hall 8:19 into the second frame.
The Wildcats were once again denied an opportunity to score, as a goal was wiped off the board in the 83rd minute due to an offsides call.
The action heated up in the final 15 minutes of play, as a Ram attacker was taken down by Hall in the box. Philadelphia's Angelo Dambalas converted the penalty kick 87:38 into the match, breaking the scoreless tie.
The Wildcats were unable to muster an attack following the goal, as the penalty kick stood for the game-winner.
Wilmington outshot the Rams, 14-11, for the match, including 6-3, with shots on goal. Attamante made six saves for the Rams while Hall recorded two stops in goal for the Wildcats.
The Rams tied Dominican with 28 points in the contest, but the head-to-head tiebreaker gives Philadelphia the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The winners of the four quarterfinal matches on Tuesday will head to Post University for the CACC Semifinals and Championship next weekend.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Volleyball Advances to CACC Tournament Semifinals with Sweep of Dominican

NEWARK, Del. - - For the fourth year in a row the Wilmington University volleyball team is moving on to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals after defeating Dominican, 3-0, at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday night.
Set scores for the match were 25-19, 25-21, and 25-23.
The Wildcats (20-13), the South Division's number two seed in the CACC Tournament, move on to play the North Division's top seed Caldwell in the second semifinal match on Friday. The semifinal and championship rounds will be hosted by Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J.
Dominican (16-9), the North Division's third seed, scored four straight points to take a 9-7 lead early in the first set. But the Wildcats bounced back to score 7-of-9 to retake a 14-11 lead. Another four consecutive points pushed the lead to 19-13 following an ace from Alex Siolos. The Chargers scored three straight to close the gap to 20-17, but that would be as close as they would get as the Wildcats finished out the set with five of the next seven points for the 25-19 victory.
The Wildcats started hot in the second set, opening up a 6-2 lead following a block from Siolos and Erin Bistany. But the Chargers rallied to tie the set at 7-7 before eventually taking their first lead of the game at 17-16. Now trailing 19-17, the Wildcats received a kill from Kaitlin DiGiacinto to start a 6-0 run on the strength of Kasey Couch's serve to take a 23-19 lead. The teams traded points the rest of the way before Allison Briley put down a kill to win the set, 25-21.
A stretch in the third set where the Chargers won 7-out-of-10 points put the visitors ahead 20-18 before they held a 21-19 lead look to stay in the match. But the Wildcats received a kill from DiGiacinto to start a run of five straight points, capped by an ace from DiGiacinto and a boisterous kill from Eile Harris for match point. The Chargers stayed alive with back-to-back points before Siolos put the match away with a kill, sending the Wildcats back to the semifinals with a 25-13 third set win.
Defensively, the Wildcats were led by Couch who needed three digs to become the seventh student-athlete in Wilmington's NCAA era to reach 1,000 for their careers. She easily passed that while matching a team high with 15 digs on Tuesday night. She joins teammates Shelby Henderson and DiGiacinto in the 1,000-career dig club, as the two juniors surpassed the plateau earlier this season as well.
DiGiacinto paced the offense that hit .184 as a team with 11 kills and just three errors on the night, hitting .222 to go along with nine digs. Briley finished with seven kills and just one error while Siolos chipped in with seven kills, 16 assists, and 13 digs as well. Henderson added 15 digs to tie Couch with the team high.
The Chargers were led by First Team All-CACC honoree McKenzie John as she collected a 20-20 match with match highs of 22 kills and 26 digs. The Chargers out-blocked the Wildcats, 5-3, on the night.
Post University, the North Division's number two seed, defeated Philadelphia, 3-0, to move on to the semifinals on Friday as well. The Eagles will play host Georgian Court, the South Division's number one seed, in the first semifinal at 1:00 p.m., as a result of Georgian Court defeating Bloomfield, 3-2.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - Getting off to a slow start doomed the Wilmington University volleyball team as it fell, 3-1, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals to the North Division's top seed Caldwell on Friday afternoon at the Wellness Center on the campus of Georgian Court.
Set scores for the match were 15-25, 13-25, 25-15, and 11-25.
The loss ends the 2014 season for the Wildcats (20-14) while the Cougars (22-10) advance to the CACC Tournament Championship match on Saturday against North Division second seed Post for the conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament.
The Wildcats accumulated 26 attack errors in the match, 24 of the 26 coming in the three sets the Wildcats dropped. Wilmington hit .356 with 18 kills in the third set to stay alive, putting together a .810 side-out percentage.
The Wildcats continued to battle back early in the first set, tying the match at 3-3 after falling behind 3-0. The team scored four straight to take an 8-7 lead, and three more consecutive points to hold an 11-10 lead. But the Cougars scored four straight and eight of the next 10 points overall to gain control of the set, 18-13. Kaitlin DiGiacinto stopped the run while a Cougar attack error brought the Wildcats to within 18-15, but the Cougars finished off the set with the final seven points, 25-15.
Another run early in the second set forced the Wildcats into a timeout trailing 8-4. Now trailing 9-4, the Wildcats scored three straight to pull within 9-7, but the two-point deficit would be as close as they would come in the second set. Caldwell ran off four straight points to lead 15-8 before another four straight pushed the lead to 21-10. The Cougars scored the final three points of the set to lead the lead, 2-0.
The Wildcats were the ones to throw the first punch in the third set, getting kills from Alex Siolos and Allison Briley, followed by a solo block from Erin Bistany for a 5-2 lead. Back-to-back kills from Angela Collins and Bistany forced the Cougars into their first timeout, trailing 16-10. Back-to-back kills from DiGiacinto forced Caldwell into their second timeout of the set with Wilmington leading 18-12. The timeout didn't slow the Wildcats down however, as they came out and scored the next two points with a block by Collins and Eile Harris, and a Bistany ace. The Wildcats scored the final four points of the set, getting back-to-back kills from Briley and Siolos to force a fourth set, 25-15.
Tied at 4-4 in the fourth set, the Cougars scored four straight points, three of which came on Wilmington attack errors to take an 8-4 lead. Bistany ended the run after the timeout with a kill but then the Cougars started another run of five straight points to take the momentum with a 13-5 lead. The Wildcats scored three of the next four points in the set, receiving kills from Bistany and DiGiacinto to close the gaps to 14-8, but Caldwell responded with four straight and eight of the next nine points of their own to go up 22-9. The Cougars Erica Harrell sent the Cougars into the CACC Championship with a kill on match point, 25-11.
Siolos led the Wildcats with nine kills, 14 assists, 14 digs, two block assists and a solo block while DiGiacinto finished with eight kills and 11 digs. Bistany collected six kills, two block assists, and a solo block. Shelby Henderson finished with a match high 31 digs.
The Wildcats hit .067 for the match while the Cougars hit .215, getting a match high 14 kills from Athena Nestoras.
The Wildcats' Kasey Couch closed out her career with a team high 16 assists in the match, adding eight digs on Friday afternoon. Couch is the program's all-time leader in sets and matched played for her career.
The Wildcats finish out the 2014 season wit a 20-14 overall record, their fifth straight 20+ win season in a row. They also won the CACC South Division for the third year in a row, earning the number two seed in the South Division this year. The Wildcats collected a 15-4 conference record this season.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - - A jumper with 13:30 remaining in regulation pushed Wilmington University junior Tenicia Spence over the 1,000-point plateau but the Wildcats dropped its 2014-15 season opener, 91-46, at Saint Anselm on Friday night in Stoutenburgh Gym.
An 18-5 run over the final 5:54 of the first half gave the Wildcats (0-1) a 20-point halftime deficit and Saint Anselm (1-0) held as large as a 47-point lead in both team's season openers.
Needing 12 points coming into her junior season, Spence (Baltimore, Md./Western) scored five points in the first half before scoring seven in a 2:20 span in the second to reach the mark. She finished with a game high 23 points, becoming the fourth player in Wilmington's NCAA era (2004-05) to cross the 1,000 career point plateau.
Spence got the scoring started in the 2014-15 season, hitting her first three-pointer of the new campaign with 19:19 remaining in the first half to give the Wildcats a quick 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, it would be the only lead of the game for the Wildcats, as Saint Anselm tied the game with a three of its own with 17:23 to play and took the lead with a fast break layup with 15:31 to play.
Trailing 17-8, sophomore Jocelyn Rodriguez hit a jumper to spark a 7-3 run for the Wildcats, as Rodriguez followed with a three-pointer on the next trip down the floor as well. Spence put home a layup with 6:02 remaining in the half to cut the deficit to 20-15. Saint Anselm then went on their 18-5 run to close out the first half of play.
A Rodriguez layup and a free throw from freshman Ebonee Dixon cut the Wildcats' deficit to 42-21 with 18:02 to play in regulation, but that would be as close as the visitors would get in the contest, falling in their season opener.
Spence led all scorers with 23 points while Rodriguez also finished in double digits with 11. Playing in their first games as a Wildcat, freshman Carin Essex-Arline and junior Katara Pressley led the team with six rebounds each. Four of Essex-Arline's came on the offensive side of the ball. Rodriguez led also led the team with four assists and added five rebounds off the bench for the Wildcats.
Saint Anselm was led by a pair of double-doubles as Raquel Johnson finished with 13 points and a game high 16 rebounds while Caitlyn Abela finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Abela tied with teammates Candace Andrews and Nancy Stablein with a team high 14 points.
The Wildcats continue the Conference Challenge event in opening the 2014-15 season in Manchester, N.H., on Saturday as they head over to Southern New Hampshire for another bout with an NE-10 team. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A push at the end of regulation closed the Wilmington University men's basketball team to within a pair but the University of the Sciences escaped the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener, 66-60, on Tuesday night in Bobby Morgan Arena.
An 8-0 run at the end of the first half pushed the Devils (4-1, 1-0 CACC) to an 11 point lead heading into the halftime break and the Wildcats (0-4, 0-1 CACC) were forced to fight from behind for the entire second half.
But fight they did as they quickly closed the gap to 38-32 following a five straight points by Rashaun Rasheed and a layup from Shai Henry with 17:21 to play in regulation.
The Devils responded to every push form the Wildcats, continually pushing the lead back out to 10 points before a layup from USciences' Garret Kerr gave the home team a 55-44 lead with 7:02 to play, the Devils' largest lead of the second half.
Trailing 59-50 with 2:34 to play, the Wildcats' Ta'Vaune Griffin and Valentino Thompson converted back-to-back layup to cut the deficit to 59-54 to 1:29 showing on the clock.

Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Signs Three for the 2015 Season

Santiago served as a defensive specialist and libero for Division Avenue High School that included the last two years on the varsity squad. Goldey-Beacom Women's Basketball (Dec. 17)

Chukwueze's 32 Points Lifts Goldey-Beacom Women's Basketball Past Chestnut Hill

Senior Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) simply could not be stopped, scoring a season-best 32 points and turning the game into a personal showcase for Goldey-Beacom in a 72-50 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia.

Chukwueze was one of two stories in the opening half for the Lightning (4-8, 3-1 CACC), who held a 41-25 halftime lead. She went on a tear with 17 points that included shooting 7-of-9 from the floor with two 3-pointers over 18 minutes. To put this into perspective, Chukwueze entered the game averaging 17.3 points over her last three contests.

The other story was Goldey-Beacom's defense, which held Chestnut Hill to only 34 percent shooting (11-of-32), just 14 percent (1-of-7) from 3-point range and forced the home side into eight turnovers. The Griffins scored just 11 points over the final 10 minutes with seven coming in the last 2 1/2 minutes.

Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA), the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, had nine points and six rebounds in the first half with fellow freshman Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) adding eight and five.

Chestnut Hill (2-7, 1-3) gave the visitors a major score when Olivia Gorczynski canned a 3-pointer with 10 minutes left, cutting the deficit to 52-45 after it trailed by 21 early in the second half.

But Chukwueze would not be denied, scoring eight points during a 15-2 Lightning run over eight minutes to give her squad a 67-47 bulge with two minutes remaining.

Chukwueze shot 13-of-18 from the floor and also had seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Her point total is two shy of her personal best at GBC, set last season against Caldwell in the CACC semifinals.

Bryson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season with Bruno adding 10 and eight for the Lightning, who shot 41 percent (26-of-61) from the floor and canned seven 3-pointers. It is the fourth straight contest GBC has hit at least seven times from beyond the arc.

Tiffany Turner had 14 points and nine rebounds, Gorczynski netted 13 points with Nicole Parriski adding 10 and 12 rebounds for the Griffins, who shot only 31 percent (22-of-70) from the field and 4-of-18 from 3-point range.

Goldey-Beacom is home Sunday against Philadelphia University, starting at 1:00 pm.

SUBJECT: Valiant Second Half Comeback Not Enough as Merrimack Escapes, 89-82, at Wilmington in Men's Basketball
DATE: December 20, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - - Trailing by 23 points at the halftime break, the Wilmington University men's basketball team battled all the way back to tie the game but was unable to overtake Merrimack, as the visitors escaped with an 89-82 victory at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Despite trailing by as many as 26 late in the first half and heading into the halftime break down 23, the Wildcats (3-8) battled all the way back to tie the game for the first tie with 5:38 left in regulation and as late as 1:15 to play before the Warriors (4-6) escaped down the stretch.
The Warriors' Gelvis Solano proved to be too much for the Wildcats, as the Northeast-10 Conference's scoring leader proved his worth with a game high 31 points, 20 of which came in the first half.
The defense duo of Valentino Thompson and Tyaire Ponzo-Meek held Solano to only 11 points in the second half while the rest of the defense kept Merrimack to 34.6 percent from the floor to fuel the second stanza comeback.
Offensively, Kevin Ohen scored 21 points in the second half, shooting 4-of-8 from deep, while Ponzo-Meek added 12 points in leading the Wildcats to 50 percent from the floor to get back into the game.
The comeback started following a Solano three-pointer with 16:25 to play as Ohen sparked a 14-2 run with a jumper of his own. Shai Henry capped the run with a fastbreak layup off a Thompson steal to bring the Wildcats to within 10 at 66-56 with 12:14 left to play.
Ponzo-Meek brought the Wildcats to within single digits for the first time since the 15:58 mark of the first half with a layup with 9:03 to play before another Ohen jumper sparked one final run.
An 11-0 run tied the game for the first time on the afternoon as Ohen capped the run with a three-pointer from the left side with 5:38 remaining on the scoreboard. But Merrimack's Solano came right back down the floor and converted a layup to regain the lead for the visitors.
Pozno-Meek tied the game for the third time with 2:03 remaining with a jumper and the Wildcats had a possession to take the lead after earning a stop on the defensive end. But Ohen's go-ahead three was off the mark and the Warriors hit a pair of free throws with 1:14 to take the lead for good.
The Wildcats got to within three again with 44 seconds to play but the Warriors hit 8-of-10 from the charity stripe to close out the contest.
Ohen led the Wildcats with a season high 27 points while hitting four three-pointers. Ponzo-Meek finished with 14 points while Thompson added 11 points and five assists off the bench. Shai Henry chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for his second double-double of the season.
The loss snapped a three game winning streak for the Wildcats but the team has another opportunity to improve its record with one final game prior to the NCAA Division II mandatory break.
The Wildcats head to Philadelphia to battle another tough NE-10 team, Saint Michael's, on Sunday at Chestnut Hill College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. and admission at the door is $5.00 per person.

Goldey-Beacom Men's Basketball Upends Lock Haven, 54-51; Chuck Hammond Gets 150th Victory as Head Coach

Kyle Steinbergin (Englewood, NJ) hit a critical 3-pointer and fellow senior Chris Gebhart (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) made the decisive layup for Goldey-Beacom in a 54-51 victory over Lock Haven at the Joseph West Jones Center.

Goldey-Beacom opened a 45-38 lead with 8:08 remaining when senior Derrick Archie (Wilmington, DE/Christiana) got the team going with an emphatic dunk. But Lock Haven scored the next seven points, forging a 45-45 tie with 5:35 left when Theo West hit twice from the line.

The game went back-and-forth the rest of the way and the Bald Eagles took their last lead, 49-48, with 2:15 to go on West's layup.

But GBC would not be upset for long. Senior Joey Getz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Wood) had the ball and found a wide-open Steinbergin, who drilled a huge triple to give the Lightning a 51-49 lead with 1:57 left.

Lock Haven got a pair of offensive rebounds on its next possession and West again came through at the line, this time with 1:32 to play for a 51-51 tie.

The Lightning then took the lead for good on their next trip. Getz got the ball up top and looked in the paint for Gebhart, who canned a short jumper with 43 seconds left for a 53-51 margin.

Wali Hepburn missed a 3-pointer for the Bald Eagles and Getz hit once from the line with 29 seconds remaining for a 54-51 margin. Hepburn then misfired on another 3-pointer, but temporarily redeemed himself by getting a steal with 5.9 seconds left. However, GBC held on as Nate Walters missed a long 3-pointer in the closing seconds for the final.

Getz again played great, scoring 20 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and a season-best four 3-pointers. This helped GBC shoot 39 percent (9-of-23) from the field in the second half to go with five 3-pointers overall.

Gebhart had 15 points and 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season and Archie contributed 10 and 10 for his second consecutive double-double.

West had 17 points and 14 rebounds, Hepburn scored 16 points and Walters had nine and 11 rebounds for the Bald Eagles, who shot 29 percent (20-of-68) from the floor and were 3-of-20 from 3-point range.

The victory also was the 150th for Goldey-Beacom coach Chuck Hammond. In his 12th season, Hammond is the program's winningest coach and led the squad to an ECAC championship in 2007, consecutive CACC South Division titles from 2011-12 as well as three straight trips to the CACC final from 2010-12.

Goldey-Beacom returns to action Saturday at Nyack as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The men's contest starts at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm game.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A slow first half loomed large for the Wilmington University men's basketball team as it dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest at Holy Family, 72-59, on New Year's Eve at the Campus Center.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak in the CACC for the Wildcats (3-10, 3-4 CACC) while the Tigers (10-3, 5-0 CACC) remain atop the conference standings to end the 2014 portion of the season.
A Kevin Ohen three-pointer with 12:40 left in the first half game the Wildcats a 13-10 lead but the Tigers responded with back-to-back three-pointers of their own to take the lead, 16-13, with 11:20 before the break. The Tigers would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the contest.
Leading 20-19, the Tigers rattled off nine straight points to take their first double digit lead, 29-19, of the contest. Holy Family's Derrick Stewart hit a three-pointer with exactly a minute to play, giving the home team its largest lead of the half, 37-24, the same score the two would take into the halftime break.
The Tigers took a 14-point lead with 10:04 remaining in regulation before the Wildcats made their move. But the Tigers scored six straight points to open the lead back out to 10 points with 4:11 to play and that was more than enough for the Tigers to hold off the Wildcats.
The Wildcats shot 41.2 percent in the second half to get back into the game but a tough 27.3 percent start (9-for-33) put the team behind at the halftime break, making the team work uphill all afternoon.
