Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Handed 2-1 Loss by West Chester

The contest was a hard-fought and physical one, but the best effort from Goldey-Beacom came up short in a 2-1 loss to West Chester at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

In a contest which featured 37 fouls, five cards and only 18 shots, it was West Chester that struck first in the 35th minute. Roberto Silva placed a great free kick to Kyle Hoops, who headed it inside the right post for his second goal of the year.

Goldey-Beacom responded in the 52nd minute on an almost identical goal. Only this time, it was sophomore Artur Zvinchuk (Bonn, Germany) who had the free kick and senior Dan Bennett (Pittsgrove, NJ/Arthur P. Schalick) who headed it home for a 1-1 tie.

For Bennett, it was his first goal of the season and fifth career.

The second half witnessed 18 fouls and neither team looked like they would budge. But the Golden Rams got the deciding marker in the 63rd minute when Giovanni Mowrey’s through ball was deflected and Miguel Ross pounced on it for his team-leading fourth marker of the campaign.

The Lightning played a man down over the last eight minutes due to a red card, but still continued to pressure the Golden Rams. Rerom Delys (Vila Velha, Brazil) had one shot blocked and another saved in the 89th minute sandwiched around a header from fellow junior Joe Traynor (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) that just went wide.

Ross had four shots and James Wood made five saves for the Golden Rams (5-5-2).

Delys came off the bench to post two shots and freshman Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) had one save for the Lightning (3-8).

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday at Concordia (NY) as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. The men’s contest starts at approximately 2:15 pm, which follows the women’s noon match.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - The defense sunk its heels in against the seventh ranked team in the country, but Bridgeport scored a pair of second half goal to defeat the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 2-0, on Thursday night on Knights' Field.

The offensive pressure continued in the early going of the second half for the Purple Knights (9-1), as they were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the 56th minute. A through ball freed Gabby Reis to be in on Williams, as she was able to beat the Wilmington net minder low for the 1-0 lead.
Bridgeport quickly added to its lead, scoring five minutes later to move ahead, 2-0. Nicola Worthington scored her first goal of the season on a long shot, receiving a backwards pass from Hanne Neby 61:10 into the match.
The Wildcats' first shot of the match wasn't until the 75th minute, and the Wildcats force Bridgeport goalkeeper Melanie Ziegner to make two stops for the shutout.
Wilmington's Alexis Perry and Kim Richer registered the shots on goal for the Wildcats, but the Purple Knights out shot the Wildcats, 22-3, for the match. Williams made six saves in goal for the Wildcats.

Two Goals from Megan Harvis Leads Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer to 5-0 Rout at Concordia (NY)

Senior Megan Harvis (Delran, NJ/Delran) scored twice and added an assist for Goldey-Beacom, which once again lit up the scoreboard in a big 5-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Concordia (NY) in Bronxville, NY.

Nine days after putting up six goals against Chowan, GBC was at it again. Harvis began the scoring parade in the 23rd when she took a pass from sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) and chipped it over goalkeeper Samantha Street for a 1-0 contest.

The second half belonged to the Lightning, who found the back of the net four times and owned an 8-5 shots edge in a contest which they posted a 16-6 overall advantage.

Sophomore Amy Runciman (Luton, England) continued her stellar play by scoring 1:48 into the half, taking a pass from Harvis and chipping it home for her sixth goal of the year. Freshman Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) then got her first collegiate goal in the 50th minute, receiving a pass from Runciman and tallying for a 3-0 GBC lead.

Harvis, who last season was 13th in the country in assists per contest, posted the second-multi goal game of her career when she took a corner kick from junior Lauren DeVault (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and scored in the 60th minute for a 4-0 contest. The Lightning in the 76th minute were the benefactor of an own goal for the final.

Harvis’ assist was her 11th career, moving her into a tie for seventh place in school history with Kristin Johnston (2002-04) and Karin Eriksson (2008-11). Her 29 career points put her two outside the College’s top 10 list.

Harvis and Runciman had four shots apiece and junior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) did not have to make a save for GBC (3-7, 2-5 CACC), which posted its 99th victory in program history.

Street totaled six saves for the Clippers (1-8, 1-7).

Goldey-Beacom has a quick turnaround before it hosts Nyack on Monday for a 3:00 pm match.

Cent’Anni: Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Gets Program’s 100th Victory

Junior Courtney Casterlin (Chenango Forks, NY) took advantage of a fortuitous break for her first career goal, lifting Goldey-Beacom to the program’s 100th victory in a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Nyack at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

A stalemate in every sense was broken by the Lightning in the 64th minute. GBC was the benefactor when a Nyack defender nudged the ball away from her goalkeeper. Senior Megan Harvis (Delran, NJ/Delran) got a touch on it and Casterlin buried it in the back of the net.

The assist was Harvis’ 12th career, putting her in sole possession of seventh place in school history, and her 30 points has her one outside the top 10.

GBC’s buckled down in the second half by getting a 9-2 shots advantage and junior goalkeeper Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) did not have to make a save.

Aguirre did make two saves in the first half, including a great stop off Rebekah Lawler’s point-blank header in the 35th minute.

Casterlin was one of three for the Lightning to end with three shots for the Lightning (4-7, 3-5 CACC).

Lawler ended with two shots and Jordan Jansen amassed five saves for the Warriors (1-10-1, 1-6).

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against Lincoln (PA) at approximately 3:15 pm as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The men’s game against Pitt-Johnstown starts at 1:00 pm.

SUBJECT: Loran Wyrough Caps Comeback for Wilmington Women's Soccer, 2-1, over Philadelphia in Double Overtime Thriller
DATE: October 13, 2015
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - It took a late game comeback including a goal in double overtime with 1:33 left, but the Wilmington University women's soccer team overcame Philadelphia, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the WU Athletics Complex.
Sophomore Loran Wyrough scored both goals for the Wildcats (7-5, 7-1 CACC), but without key stops from sophomore goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams, the Rams (5-7, 4-4 CACC) would have run away with the match in the second half.
Wyrough one-timed a beautiful set up with 1:33 left in double overtime, capping the comeback. La'Dae Boykin played a ball to the corner for Chandler Lages and after getting into the box on the end line, Lages played a ball to the middle of the goal, beating Ram goalkeeper Courtney Shaw low to an awaiting wide-open Wyrough. It is her fourth game-winner of the season.
After a scoreless first half, the Rams took the lead early in the second half as Nicole Raab scored her third of the season in the 52nd minute. She ran onto a long ball over the top from Carla Chmielewski and beat Williams one-on-one from the right side.
Williams couldn't come up with that break-a-way save, but came up with a big one in the 73d minute to keep the score at 1-0. Raab came barreling in on Williams alone, and Williams was able to get a touch on the ball with her lower body to deflect it out of bounds wide of the goal for a corner. The Wildcats were able to clear the corner away as well.
That allowed the Wildcats to put the pressure on the defensive half of Philadelphia, finally breaking through in the 83rd minute. Rebecca Dolhansky had the ball on the top right corner of the 18-yard box, crossing it to the far post. Philadelphia's defender came up empty on a clear attempt and Wyrough was there to slam it home, tying the match with 7:34 left on the scoreboard.
Both Wilmington and Philadelphia had a shot in the remaining moments, but Chmielewski and Boykin both put their shots high, sending the game into overtime.
The teams were only able to muster one shot in the first overtime period, as Lages header went right of the goal in the early going.
Early in the second overtime, Wyrough thought she beat Shaw, but Ram net minder got her hands on the shot to her left and the ball glanced off the post and stayed out.
The Rams took the next two shots in the contest, but Williams came up with one save before the other sailed wide left in the 105th minute, setting up the heroics from Wyrough.
Wyrough almost gave the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead in the first half, but her left footed volleyball hit off the top of the crossbar and stayed out.
The Rams outshot the Wildcats, 17-13, and earned more corners, 7-5, for the match. Williams came up with seven saves for the Wildcats while Shaw made six stops for the Rams.
It was the first time since the 2012 CACC Tournament Championship match and the first time the Wildcats defeated the Rams in the regular season since the 2010 season.
The Wildcats continue their four-game home stand with another CACC contest on Saturday, as they host Post to start a soccer double-header at 12:00 p.m. Saturday is soccer's Breast Cancer Awareness matches with donations and proceeds benefitting the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

NEWARK, Del. - - Senior Andreas Lunding led the Wilmington University golf team with a 76 in the third round of the Guy Harvey Invitational on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats finished 18th overall while playing on PGA National Champion Course.
Lunding scored a 76 while junior Sam Clark shot a 78, but the Wildcats needed to card a pair of 80's in the last round, not allowing them to catch the rest of the field. Sophomore Joey Russo and junior Miguel Siercke shot an even 80 on Tuesday to round out the Wildcat scoring.
Freshman Ryan Rucinski led the Wildcats at the tournament, finishing in a tie for 29th overall with a 224 (+8), three-round total. He went 74-69-81 in the three rounds. Russo was the second leading Wildcat, carding a 77-75-80 for a 232 (+16) to finish in a tie for 73rd overall.
Clark's 78 gave him a 235 (+19) for the tournament, as he carded an 80-77-78 to finish in a tie for 86th overall. Siercke wet 75-82-80 in the three rounds, finishing with a 237 (+21) to come in 90th overall. Mateus Silvestre’s Overtime Winner Gives Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer 4-3 Win Over Nyack

Mateus Silvestre’s second goal of the match was a golden one, converting a great pass from fellow sophomore Cameron Wilkinson (Terrigal, Australia) in the 97th minute to give Goldey-Beacom a crucial 4-3 overtime win in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play in Wilmington, DE.

The scoring tone was set in the seventh minute when Artur Zvinchuk (Bonn, Germany) got a pass from fellow sophomore Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) and scored to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. Simon Kraemer got the first of his three goals for Nyack by converting a pass from Francois Legoedec, who got his league-leading 11th assist, in the 20th minute.

The Warriors took their first lead, 2-1, in the 25th minute as Kraemer chipped one in off a feed from Pablo Montes. But the Lightning got the equalizer three minutes later when Wilkinson directed in a great through ball from sophomore Manuel Berto (Valencia, Spain).

The match had great offense, but it also had spectacular goalkeeping from Nyack freshman Wiktor Lasota. Staring at a penalty kick, Lasota saved the attempt from senior Daniel Bennett (Pittsgrove, NJ/Arthur P. Schalick) in the 41st minute and then stopped Silvestre’s rebound.

Silvestre got his first collegiate goal in the 51st minute, watching his corner kick from the left go directly inside the right post for a 3-2 contest. But Nyack struck back five minutes later and it was that guy Kraemer again, banging home a penalty kick for his ninth goal of the season.

GBC had its chances to regain the lead in regulation, but could not convert. Silvestre’s initial attempt to be the hero sailed high in the 66th minute and junior Joe Traynor (Warminster, PA/William Tennant) had a great look with six minutes left sail wide.

Then came extra time and the Lightning took advantage right after Wilkinson and Silvestre checked into the match. Wilkinson played a long ball on the right side that Silvestre corralled and put inside the post for the Lightning’s second golden-goal victory of the year.

Omar Hernandez Scores Overtime Goal for Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer in 2-1 Victory vs. Pitt-Johnstown

Sophomore Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA) provided Goldey-Beacom’s second golden goal in as many days, scoring 7:58 into the first overtime for his squad’s 2-1 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in Wilmington, DE.

Sophomore Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil), who was the hero in Tuesday’s 4-3 victory over Nyack, provided today’s winning helper. He had the ball on the left side and presented a great pass to Hernandez, who calmly deposited it inside the left post for his third goal of the year.

It was the Lightning’s school-record third overtime victory of the season, breaking the mark it shared with the 2002 and 2003 squads.

Junior Erik Tapper (Linkoping, Sweden) opened the scoring with his first goal of the year, firing a 20-yard shot inside the right post for a 1-0 GBC lead. Pitt-Johnstown leveled the match in the 33rd minute when Erik Etter’s throw-in was headed home by Kevin Neskie for the latter’s second goal of the season.

Mackenzie Wilson Reaches 1,000 Career Digs in Goldey-Beacom Volleyball’s 3-1 Win at Nyack

Senior Mackenzie Wilson (Wilmington, DE/Concord) became the eight player in Goldey-Beacom history to record 1,000 career digs as her squad left Nyack with a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory (16-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-16) in Nyack, NY.

The four-year standout ended the match with a team-high 20 digs and now stands at 1,017 digs, vaulting into seventh place in school history. She has 232 digs this season as she looks to better her career best of 318 set last year.

Wilson was not the only contributor for the Lightning (6-13, 2-9 CACC), who combined for 23 kills over the final two sets. Junior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE/DE Military Academy) had 16 kills, five digs and 3 1/2 blocks, Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) notched 31 assists and seven digs, fellow freshman Keelin McEleney (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) amassed 18 digs and four aces with sophomore Kelly Bolton (Oxford, PA/Oxford) adding 10 digs.

Natalie Anderson dished 34 assists, Alexus Winters had 12 kills and 24 digs with Lindsay Miller adding 10 and 15 for the Warriors (1-16, 0-9), who had a 44-37 kills edge but could not overcome 18 hitting errors and nine receiving errors.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday hosts Chestnut Hill for a 7:00 pm match.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Dealt Heartbreaking Overtime Loss by Dominican (NY)

A third straight overtime victory was not to be for Goldey-Beacom, which gave up a gut-wrenching goal 7:24 into the first extra period for a tough 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Dominican (NY) at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The partisan crowd was into it early in the sixth minute when the Lightning grabbed a 1-0 lead. Manuel Berto (Valencia, Spain) had a great cross and fellow sophomore Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) was right there to bury it for his fourth goal of the season and ninth career.

The physical encounter which featured 38 fouls and nine yellow cards was a tussle throughout in which the Chargers found a way to level in the 59th minute. Luis DelPezo had consecutive shots blocked, Hallvard Kuloey then had his attempt saved before Vincent Piccoli put home the rebound for his third tally of the year.

Dominican looked like it would take the lead in the 83rd minute as Lukas Nordin put a shot on cage, but sophomore midfielder Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) continued his more-than-impressive year by heading it off the line to keep the match at level pegging.

It was Goldey-Beacom’s turn to hope for a late goal in regulation as Dominican committed a foul with eight seconds left roughly 40 yards from the net. The free kick was perfectly placed and there was sophomore Billy Swontek (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) for the header, but his attempt was thwarted by a leaping Steven Hegner in goal to force overtime.

A free kick just outside the box for the Chargers in overtime proved to be the difference as the Lightning were denied a school-record fourth overtime win. Nicholas Mavilla had his shot stopped by freshman Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa), but Fernando Gutierrez buried the rebound for his first goal of the year.

Hernandez attempted four shots and Bismilla did all he could with five saves for GBC (5-10, 3-6 CACC).

DelPezo and Nordin had three shots apiece and Hegner amassed three saves for the Chargers (5-8, 5-4), who ended with a 19-9 shots edge that included 15-5 following halftime.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday makes the short trip to Newark for a tough battle against Wilmington (DE). The match will begin at 3:30 pm.

SUBJECT: Post Comes Back to Defeat Wilmington Women's Soccer, 2-1, in Overtime
DATE: October 17, 2015
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - A goal in the second minute of overtime capped a comeback for Post as it defeated the Wilmington University women's soccer team, 2-1, in matchup of teams atop the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak in CACC play for the Wildcats (7-6, 7-2 CACC). The Eagles (8-4-1, 8-1-1 CACC) picked up their first overtime victory of the season, winning their third straight game overall.
Tied, 1-1, at the end of regulation, the Eagles didn't waste any time in the overtime period, scoring in the second minute. The scoring chance was started by a turnover in the backfield by the Wildcats as the Eagles' Lexxi Carroll jumped on the ball in the top left corner of the 18-yard box. Carroll's shot beat Wilmington goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams high and snuck under the crossbar for the golden goal victory.
The Wildcats took the lead with a first half goal, scoring in the 29th minute off a free kick. Set up in front of her own bench, Carin Essex-Arline sent a ball towards the middle of the 18-yard box. The ball found its way on the end of a racing Loran Wyrough as she was in alone on the Eagle keeper. Wyrough slotted it home for her 13th goal of the season, putting the home team on top.
A miscue in the backfield allowed Post to tie the game early in the second half. The Eagles' Jen van Alphen put a cross to the middle of the goal form the left side after a Wilmington turnover, finding the open leg of Katharina Mertz in the 58th minute. Mertz' ninth goal of the season tied the match 57:29 into the game.
Wilmington led, 3-2, in shots the rest of the contest, but neither team built a strong threat in the remainder of regulation.
Post held the lead in shots, 11-7, for the game, while also taking the only two corners in the game.
Williams recorded seven saves for the Wildcats while Post's Laura Morgan made three stops for the win.
The Wildcats' four-game home stand continues with another CACC contest on Wednesday. The Wildcats welcome cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom to the WU Athletics complex for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Falls, 5-0, at No. 20 Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom made the short trip to face the 20th-ranked team in the country and left on the wrong end of a 5-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference decision to Wilmington in Newark, DE.

A tired GBC group which last week played three extra-time matches found itself in a 3-0 hole within the first eight minutes. Clifford Nwechefom scored the first and third goals for Wilmington sandwiched around Kristofer Michael’s marker. Geoff Velasquez and Lance Berry each got assists in that span.

The Wildcats made it 4-0 in the 22nd minute when Jamie Burridge found the back of the net off Berry’s second assist of the half, one in which the home team grabbed a 12-3 shots edge.

Nwechefom completed the hat trick in the 58th minute with Juan Bernal getting the assist.

Sophomore Artur Zvinchuk (Bonn, Germany) attempted two shots and freshman Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) made two saves for the Lightning (5-11, 3-7 CACC).

Nwechefom took five shots and Vinny Tasca amassed four saves for the Wildcats (12-2, 9-1).

UBJECT: No. 22 Wilmington Men's Soccer Claims Top Seed in Upcoming CACC Tournament with 5-0 Victory over Goldey-Beacom
DATE: October 20, 2015
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - For only the second time in program history, the Wilmington University men's soccer team claimed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season Championship, clinching the title with a 5-0 shutout over crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The difference came in the first eight minutes of the contest, as the 22nd ranked Wildcats (12-2, 9-1 CACC) scored three quick goals to air the air out of the Lightning (5-11, 3-7 CACC). The Wildcats added a fourth goal in the first half before capping the scoring in the 58th minute.
The win secures at least a share of the CACC Regular Season Championship but clinched the top seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament as Post couldn't currently catch the Wildcats with three games to play, but the Wildcats hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Eagles for the top seed. If the Wildcats win or tie either of their last two CACC games, they will be the outright CACC Regular Season Champions.
The last time the Wildcats clinched the CACC Regular Season Championship was during the record breaking 2009 season as the Wildcats finished 11-0 in the CACC and 19-3-1 overall.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats were led by leading scorer Clifford Nwechefom as he scored a hat trick to give him 14 goals on the season. The eventual game-winner came just 4:10 into the contest, as he finished off a scramble in the box following a corner.
Kristofer Michael made it 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats with a low knuckling blast from 20 yards out, finishing off a great run from Geoff Velasquez down the left side just 6:33 into the contest.
Nwechefom was at it again just shy of the eight minute mark of the game, as Josh Fawssett touched a ball with the outside of his foot to Lance Berry outside the 18-yard box. Berry one-timed the pass into the box to allow Nwechefom to be in on the goalkeeper, slotting it home for his second of the game just 7:56 into the game.
Jamie Burridge finished off a beautiful setup from Velasquez and Berry on the left die in the 22nd minute, getting on the end of a cross from Berry on the far post to make it 4-0 in the first half.
After the halftime break, continued to put the pressure on the Lightning breaking through once again in the 58th minute. Juan Bernal had the ball in the middle of the field with space and flicked the ball up and over the back line of the Lightning. Nwechefom raced onto the ball at the top of the box, giving himself another one-on-one with the Goldey-Beacom goalkeeper. Clifford slotted it home for the hat trick and his 14th of the season.
Nwechefom now has six game-winners on the season, tying him with the nation's leaders from Millersville and Saginaw Valley State.
The Wildcats' Vinny Tasca made four saves for his first career shutout as a Wildcat.
Wilmington heads to Shippensburg for its final nonconference contest of the regular season on Thursday. The matchup against the Red Raiders is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Goldey-Beacom’s Merel Ann van Zanten Named CACC Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Year

An outstanding debut campaign for Goldey-Beacom’s Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands) received a well-deserved honor as she was picked Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Year.

Van Zanten’s two months on campus already has produced one of the top seasons in program history. She already has amassed a 12-2 singles record, including a 6-1 mark in the conference, and a 6-3 doubles record that includes 5-2 in the league.

The 12 singles victories is just one outside the top 10 for the most in one season in GBC history.

Van Zanten’s career began with eight straight victories that included a trip to the ITA East Regional “B” Flight final. Her loss in the final on September 19 was the first set she dropped all season.

She presently is on a four-match winning streak and only has dropped one set in that time. That run has helped the Lightning (5-3, 4-3 CACC) reach the league tournament for an eighth straight season.

In doubles, all of her matches except one has been in the top spot and she won her first three of the campaign. She has captured three of her last four matches overall.

Van Zanten becomes the Lightning’s first Rookie of the Year since Stephanie Puentes Robinson in 2011. She has this fall twice been named CACC Rookie of Week, once the Player of the Week and once to the weekly Honor Roll.

Goldey-Beacom is the number four seed for the conference tournament and will battle top-seeded Concordia (NY) in the semifinals on Saturday at 10:00 am. The tournament will take place on the campus of Chestnut Hill College.

Loran Wyrough scored the bookend goals for the Wildcats as they scored three second half goals to take down Dominican (1-12, 1-10 CACC).
Wyrough started the scoring early in the contest, capitalizing on the team's first shot. Chandler Lages made a run down the right side and put a cross to the middle of the goal. Wyrough was there waiting and headed it home in the fifth minute for the early lead.
The Wildcats went on to out-shoot the Chargers, 23-1, in the first half but the Chargers defense and goalkeeper Angelica Contreras came up with 10 first half saves to keep the contest at 1-0 at the halftime break.
MacIntosh opened the scoring in the second half, this time being the beneficiary of a cross from Lages just 5:56 into the second frame. The cross from the endline found its way through the defense and to the foot of MacIntosh from eight yards out.
Cerrato got in on the scoring as well, despite being a two-year starting defender for the Wildcats. Alexis Perry started the play from in front of her bench, passing to Wyrough in the center of the field. Wyrough's touch pass was laid out for Cerrato and she blasted a shot home from 22 yards out in the 61st minute for the 3-0 lead.
Wyrought then capped the scoring with another header in the 75th minute, getting more on the ball than the contesting goalkeeper. Wyrough challenged a high lofted cross from Perry, heading the ball home on the far post for her 16th of the year.
The Wildcats out shot the Chargers, 34-3, and earned more corners, 6-1, for the match. Contreras finished with 13 saves for the Chargers while Kierstyn Williams made two saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
Wyrough's two goals moved her into the lead in the CACC while she is now tied atop the conference with 36 points.
The win propels the Wildcats into second place with one conference game remaining. The Wildcats square off with CACC leading Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J., on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

The second half saw the Bears challenge multiple times despite only playing with 10 men the last 15 minutes. The defense did such a great job that the last save from GBC freshman Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) came with 13 1/2 minutes left.

Sophomore Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) took four shots and Bismilla made two saves for the Lightning (6-11, 4-7 CACC).

Runciman gave the Lightning the only goal they would need, converting a penalty kick in the 13th minute to get things going. Freshman Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) then got into the act in the 41st minute, getting the ball to bounce over the goalkeeper’s head for her fifth goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.

Harvis then scored twice in just over two minutes, one of Runciman’s feed and one from sophomore Kelsey Vick (Clarksboro, NJ/Paul VI) for a 5-0 cushion.

She now has 15 career assists that are tied with Harvis for third best in school history and her 37 points are one outside the top 10.

Runciman’s nine goals this year are tied for sixth best in GBC history, her nine assists are tied for fourth and her 27 points are fourth.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Ends Season With Loss in CACC Quarterfinals

Goldey-Beacom gave up an early goal in both halves and despite its best effort, dropped a 4-0 contest at Wilmington (DE) in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals in Newark, DE.

Goldey-Beacom (7-12) entered as a No. 8 seed and was competing in the CACC Tournament for the first time since 2009. Ironically, it also was an eighth seed that year and played at top-seeded Wilmington (DE) on November 2.

Wilmington (14-4), which earlier this season was nationally ranked and presently is sixth in the East Region, struck 8:15 into the match on a great goal from Lance Berry. Clifford Nwechefom got the ball up top and fed on the right side to Berry, who ripped one inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.

GBC still was optimistic heading out of the break down just one goal and looked to get the equalizer. But the Wildcats squashed that 6:40 into the second half when Nwechefom took advantage of a bad clear and found the back of the net for his team-leading 17th goal of the year and a 2-0 margin.

Berry netted his second of the match and 13th of the year in the 56th minute, followed by Morgan Shutter scoring in the 78th minute for the final.

Berry took five shots with Joe Boulter and Juan Bernal getting three each for Wilmington, which posted a 21-8 shots edge that included 12-5 in the second half. Frank Hall ended with five saves.

Freshman Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) fired three shots and Suhail Busmilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) closed his sensational freshman campaign today by totaling six saves.

NEWARK, Del. - - A fierce comeback fell just short for the Wilmington University women's soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Caldwell in the First Round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
With the loss, the fourth seeded Wildcats close their season at 10-8 overall; a four game improvement from a season ago. Fifth seeded Caldwell (10-8-1) advance to the CACC Tournament Semifinals on Thursday where the Cougars face top seeded Georgian Court at Post University.
Trailing 2-0, the Wildcats attempted to make a late game comeback as Carin Essex-Arline cut the deficit in half in the 82nd minute. Kellie MacIntosh found Essex-Arline charging into the box and the sophomore did the rest, scoring with a hard low shot from 16 yards out.
The Wildcats had ample opportunities to tie the game late, but shots from Loran Wyrough and MacIntosh both sailed wide left of the goal frame.
Caldwell got on the board in the first half in the 24th minute as the Wildcats defense couldn't quite get the ball out of the penalty area. The ball popped loose on a scramble and right to Caldwell's Sarina Soriano who buried it from close range for her seventh goal of the season.
The Wildcats put the final three shots of the half on the board, but Caldwell's Mary Kanzler saved two while the third was high.
Caldwell came out strong in the second half, getting off the first nine shots of the second frame. Despite pressure in the offensive third during that same time, the Wildcats couldn't get the final touch to get a shot off.
It was the eighth shot of the half that seemed to break the back of the Wildcats, as Caldwell's Kelly Folk was on the doorstep to clean up a breakaway by Gianna Klucker. Klucker's initial shot was saved by Wilmington netminder Kierstyn Williams, but the rebounds bounced right to Folk who buried it for the 2-0 lead in the 78th minute.
Caldwell outshot the Wildcats, 12-6, while also earning more corners, 3-2, in the match. Williams recorded seven saves for the Wildcats while Kanzler came up with two stops for the Cougars.
The fourth place finish in the CACC standings was the best finish for the women's soccer team since winning the CACC Regular Season Championship in 2012.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Falls at Georgian Court in CACC Quarterfinals

Goldey-Beacom’s second straight foray into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament ended on a sour note, dropping a 4-1 quarterfinal contest at top-seeded Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

Eighth-seeded GBC was making its second straight appearance in the CACC Tournament, a first for the program since going four consecutive years from 2003-06. The last of those seasons also resulted in an opening-game loss at Georgian Court.

The teams played the first quarter of the match at a stalemate before the Lions erased their goose egg in the 23rd minute. Tori Capestro put a corner kick in the box that Morgan Peacock headed in for the first of her three goals.

Peacock got her second of the match in the 31st minute to make it 2-0. Capestro this time put a cross in the box and Peacock again was on it, heading it to the back of the net.

The Lightning (8-10) got back into the match in the 49th minute courtesy of sophomore Amy Runciman (Luton, England), a first team all-conference pick, netting her 10th goal of the season. Sophomore Kelsey Vick (Clarksboro, NJ/Paul VI) put a cross inside that Runciman got a touch on for a 2-1 deficit.

Runciman’s 10th goal this season is tied for sixth best in school history and her 30 points are fourth. Her 12th career goal puts her three outside the top 10 and her 40 points has her 10th in GBC annals.

But Georgian Court restored the two-goal margin in the 55th minute as CACC Player of the Year Lizzy Kroon picked up a loose ball in the box and found pay dirt for her 18th goal of the season.

Peacock completed her hat trick with 56 seconds left, heading in another corner kick from Capestro for the final.

Kroon had seven shots and Casey O’Connor made four saves for the Lions (15-2-2).

Runciman and junior Jane Grimley (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea) attempted two shots apiece and junior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) ended with 10 saves, one off her career high.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Selected to End Fourth in the CACC South Division

A season full of promise sees Goldey-Beacom enter it picked to close fourth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s South Division based on a vote by the league’s coaches.

Three of last year’s four conference-tournament semifinalists reside in the South Division including defending champion Holy Family, which got nine first-place votes. Bloomfield was the unanimous pick to claim the North Division as coaches are prohibited from voting on their own team.

The Lightning last season made the conference tournament a school-record sixth straight year and won 13 of their last 23 contests to close an impressive campaign.

GBC gets a massive boost this season with the return of sophomore guard Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ/Millville), last year’s CACC Rookie of the Year and a second team all-league honoree. One of the most dynamic competitors who presents many options for the Lightning and many problems for their opponents, Bruno last season also was picked CACC Rookie of the Week four times and named to the league’s Weekly Honor Roll four times.

Bruno last season broke the school’s single-season records with 65 three-pointers and 146 assists, ended 24th in the country with a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio, 26th with 5.0 assists per game, 55th with a .380 three-point percentage, 78th with 2.24 three-pointers per contest and 96th with 16.1 points per game. Her 65 three-pointers already are ninth in school history.

Sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) made an immediate impact in the post last season, which helped her twice to be named CACC Rookie of the Week and once the Defensive Player of the Week. She ended 28th in the CACC with 10.9 points per game, 15th with 7.2 rebounds per contest, fifth with 1.1 blocks per game, 16th with a .433 shooting percentage and ninth on the school’s single-season list with 32 blocks.

Sophomore Jasmyne Lewis (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) gives the Lightning great court awareness and is a multi-faceted competitor. She closed 41st in the league with 4.1 rebounds per game, scored in double figures seven times and was fifth on the squad with 6.5 points per contest.

The squad is 10 victories shy of reaching 200 in program history.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season November 13 against Stonehill in Worcester, MA.

Goldey-Beacom’s men’s basketball team has been selected to end fifth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s highly competitive South Division based on a vote by the league’s coaches.

The Lightning have the unenviable task of playing in the division which last season produced all four semifinalists in the conference tournament. Philadelphia University won the crown on its home court by upending Wilmington (DE).

One of the players expected to play a big role for GBC is junior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek). He returns after closing fourth on the squad last season with 7.9 points per game, 33rd in the league with 1.0 three-pointers made per contest and averaged 2.5 rebounds over 24 games.

Junior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) gives the Lightning solid play at guard, ending last season averaging 6.1 points and 2.1 assists per contest. Sophomore Daniel Cooper (Homestead, FL) provides a great deal of explosiveness as he closed last season fourth on the squad with a .428 shooting percentage to go with 6.0 points per game.

The squad only needs seven victories to reach 200 since the program’s re-instatement in 1998-99.

Holy Family was picked to win the South, obtaining nine first-place votes. Bloomfield got six first-place votes as the North favorite.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season November 14 at home against New York Tech, starting at 3:00 pm.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - In a crucial Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division match, the Wilmington University volleyball team topped Georgian Court, 3-1, to remain in second place on Wednesday night at the Wellness Center.
Set scores for the match were 25-14, 19-25, 25-23, and 28-26.
The Wildcats (21-7, 14-3 CACC) hit .168 for the night, but made it count with hitting .229 in the fourth and deciding set. The Wildcats also out blocked the Lions (17-14, 10-6 CACC), 11-3.5, and out dug Georgian Court, 86-78, for the match.
The visitors came out on fire in the first set, putting down 12 kills with only four errors to hit .205 for the set. The defense was more impressive in the opening frame, as the Lions could only find the floor with six kills on 35 attempts, hitting .000 for the set with six errors.
The Lions were able to tie the match in the second set by hitting .244 to the Wildcats' .075, but the Wildcats were able to close out the match with a pair of lose, two-point victories in the third and fourth sets.
Junior Allison Briley led the Wildcats with a team high 18 kills, adding 18 digs and two aces for a match high 20.5 points. Sophomore Eile Harris hit .429 for the match with seven kills, while only making one error. Harris also led the defense at the net with six block assists, adding to her 10 total points in the match.
Defensively, senior Shelby Henderson led the back row with a match high 29 digs, while also adding two assists and a service ace. Classmate Alex Siolos added 14 digs while freshman Miranda Shaw chipped in with 13 digs. Shaw also led the team with 37 assists in the four sets.

SUBJECT: Fourth Seeded Chestnut Hill Shocks Top Seeded Wilmington, 2-1, in Overtime of CACC Tournament Semifinal
DATE: November 5, 2015

WATERBURY, Conn. - - A penalty kick in the 96th minute sank the top seeded Wilmington University men's soccer team, as fourth seeded Chestnut Hill came back to steal a 2-1 victory in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Semifinal on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.
The loss knocks the Wildcats (14-5) from the CACC Tournament and now they will have to depend on the NCAA committee to put them into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament. The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Selection Show is Monday night at 6:00 p.m.
The Wildcats outshot the Griffins (8-6-3), 23-10, for the match, including a 12-4 outpouring in the second half. But the Wildcats could only find the back of the net once and it came in the 23rd minute of action.
Lance Berry played a cross from the right side, just far out enough that the Griffin keeper couldn't cut it off. He connected with a charging Josh Fawssett who one-timed it past the diving keeper and into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the year 22:46 into the match.
The Wildcats outshot the Griffins, 4-1, the rest of the first half, including a pair of shots from Berry that were saved by the Griffins' James Jackson.
The Griffins came out of the halftime break on a mission to tie the game, earning a corner right off the whistle. An ensuing header sailed high before the Griffins' second shot of the half beat Wilmington goalkeeper Frank Hall. Nicholas Jaffe beat his defender and his low shot beat Hall to his right side, tying the match, 1-1, in the 52nd minute.
Following the goal, the Wildcats outshot the Griffins 12-2 in the remainder of the second half, forcing Jackson into four saves. Juan Bernal's rip in the 82nd minute figured to be the hardest save of the half for Jackson.
As the game went into the overtime period, the Wildcats again had more opportunities, as Geoff Velasquez got off a toe-poke shot that Jackson saved and Joe Boulter gave the offense another chance with a corner. But Jackson punched the ball away and the Griffins countered.
Nils Fussen split a pair of Wildcat defenders and got into the box. Trying to shield off Fussen, the Wildcats clipped him and the ref awarded a penalty kick. Jaffe stepped up and converted his second penalty-kick of the season for the game-winner 5:24 into the overtime session.
Hall recorded to saves for the Wildcats while Jackson came away with eight stops for the Griffins.
The Griffins advance to the CACC Tournament Championship on Saturday as they play the winner of the Post/Bloomfield match.
The NCAA Division II Men's Selection Show will be streamed online at NCAA.com on Monday night.

djl
NEWARK, Del. - - A pivotal third set swung in favor of Philadelphia as the Rams won the final three sets of the match to defeat the Wilmington volleyball team, 3-1, in a crucial Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Set scores for the match for the Wildcats were 25-13, 18-25, 26-28, and 13-25.
Four straight points in the third set gave the Wildcats (21-8, 14-4 CACC) a 23-21 lead but the Rams (19-5, 15-2 CACC) tied the match with a kill and block, 23-23. Erin Bistany gave the Wildcats set point with a kill, but the Wildcats couldn't capitalize as the Rams answered with a kill of their own. Allison Briley gave the Wildcats another set point with a big swing but the Rams again answered, this time with back-to-back points to take a 26-25. Alex Siolos staved off one set point with a kill, but back-to-back blocks at the net by the Rams gave the visitors the set, 28-26, and a 2-1 lead in the match.
That set stemmed the tied of the match for the Wildcats, as the Rams came out scored 10 of the first 15 points of the fourth set. Kills from Siolos and Briley, and a solo block from Bistany brought the Wildcats to within 11-9, but the Wildcats wouldn't get any closer for the rest of the match. Another 3-0 run and a 5-1 stretch pushed the Rams to 18-11. A Wildcat block and a kill from Briley cut the deficit to 18-13, but the Rams rattled off the last seven points of the match to take the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-1.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the match, putting multiple runs together to grab a 12-3 lead in the first set. Leading 17-11, the Wildcats scored eight of the next 10 points, including the final three points to take the game, 25-13, and jump out to an early lead in the match.
The roles were reversed in the second set, as the Rams took leads of 10-3 and 13-9 before scoring four straight for the 17-9 lead. The Wildcats climbed back to within three at 21-18, but the Rams scored the final four points of the set, getting a block on set points to tie the match, 1-1, and setting up the epic third set.
The Wildcats hit .192 in the first set but then never got above .100 again, hitting .073 for the match. The Wildcats out blocked the Rams, 12-9, but the Rams were able to come up with more digs, 91-77, leading to the Wildcats' low attacking numbers.
Briley led the Wildcats with 12 kills while picking up 18 digs as well. She hit .135 for the match on 52 swings. Shelby Henderson led the team with 22 digs while Kaitlin DiGiacinto added 14 digs. Miranda Shaw was the final Wildcat to reach double figures, keeping 11 balls off the floor for the Wildcats. Shaw also added 30 assists.
At the net, Bistany led the charge for the Wildcats with two solo and four block assists while Siolos added a solo and four block assists as well. Briley and Eile Harris also get a hand on four block assists as well.
The win clinched the CACC South Division Regular Season Championship for the Rams while the loss clinched the second seed in the division for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats have their final nonconference match of the year on Tuesday, as they travel to Millersville before returning home for the regular season finale next Saturday.

SUBJECT: Jamie Burridge Produces Wild Finish as Wilmington Men's Soccer Advances to NCAA Tournament Second Round with 4-3 Overtime Victory over Adelphi
DATE: November 12, 2015
djl
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - - Following an exhausting second half which featured five goals between the two teams, the sixth seeded Wilmington University men's soccer team didn't waste any time in the first overtime period, as Jamie Burridge buried a rebound opportunity just 30 seconds into the frame to defeat third seeded Adelphi, 4-3, in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament on Thursday afternoon at LIU Post.
The win capped the second ever victory in the NCAA Tournament for the Wildcats (15-5), as they also won in the First Round in 2013. This is the third NCAA Tournament appearance for the Wildcats and the team has advanced to the second round in all three appearances. The team earned a First Round bye in their first ever appearance in 2009.
The Wildcats will meet second seeded and host LIU Post on Saturday for the Second Round contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The overtime winner wouldn't have come if it weren't for a late match comeback to tie the game, 3-3. The Wildcats scored first, eventually taking a lead into the halftime break, 1-0. But every time the Wildcats scored, the Panthers (13-5-3) followed suit with a game-tying goal, eventually taking a 3-2 lead in the 72nd minute with back-to-back goals. The Wildcats battled back to tie the match, 3-3, in the 77th minute.
Senior Lance Berry led the offense on Thursday, scoring twice while adding an assist on the game's first goal. Berry scored the team's second goal to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute, tied the match in the 77th minute, and then put the blast on frame in overtime that was saved, but caromed right to Burridge.
Clifford Nwechefom got the scoring started for the Wildcats in the 24th minute, as he headed home a hard cross from the right side by Berry. He gave the Wildcats the 1-0 halftime lead as the teams tied, 5-5, in shots.
Adelphi tied the match in the 52nd minute on a header of its own before Berry responded with his first in the 56th minute. Berry had the ball fall right in his lap atop the 18-yard box, as the Panther's goalkeeper and defender knocked into each other on a miscommunication play.
But Adelphi didn't back down, tying the match in the 64th minute before taking its lone lead of the game in the 72nd minute. Caelan Hueber was left all alone on the six-yard box as he chested a ball down to himself before slotting it home.
But Berry responded for the Wildcats, as he was left alone on the back post in the 77th minute, somehow getting a ball at his feet after a cross from Juan Bernal couldn't be cleared.
Adelphi started with the ball in the overtime period, but the Wildcats quickly won possession and fed Berry on the right side with space. He took a low screamer from 30 yards out that was initially saved, but Burridge came charging in to clean up the rebound just 30 seconds into the session.
Vinny Tasca made four saves for the Wildcats, including back-to-back stops from point black range as the first half was coming to a close. The Wildcats led in shots, 13-11, but Adelphi earned more corners, 4-3, in the match.
Saturday's second round game will also be played at the Pioneer Soccer Park and is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. opening whistle.
