NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team secured their
fourth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship in
the past five years by coming back to defeat Chestnut Hill, 10-9, in extra
innings on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The top seeded Wildcats (33-12) came into the contest with the odds in
their favor, as they worked through the winner's bracket and only needed to
win one game on Saturday. They squared off against the third seeded
Griffins (29-14) in a rematch of the 2013 tournament finals, and having
already defeated the Griffins, 13-0, in the winner's bracket on Friday. The
Wildcats would need to mount a late game comeback and use a walk-off hit
from backup catcher Tom Freeland to secure the victory.
The Griffins jumped out to a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the third
inning, and led 7-2 after four complete innings. The Wildcats started to
chip away at the lead, scoring two in the fifth, one in in the sixth, and
one in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-6. But the real fun didn't start
until the ninth inning.
The ninth inning began with the Griffins scoring two quick runs from Mike
McLaughlin and Brendan Looby to give Chestnut Hill a three-run lead once

SUBJECT: A two-run home run in the bottom of the 16th inning dropped the Wilmington University softball team to the loser's bracket, but the team responded with a 2-0 victory over Pace to remain alive in the NCAA Division II East Region 1 Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.
With the win over eighth seeded Pace, the fifth seeded Wildcats (34-17) advance to face a familiar foe on Sunday morning. Wilmington will square off against top seeded and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opponent Caldwell at 10 a.m. in another elimination game.
Saturday started where Friday night ended, as the Wildcats and fourth seeded Adelphi needed to finish out the postponed game. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie after 12 innings on Friday, only to come back Saturday morning to determine a winner.
The Wildcats would strike first in the contest off of an extra base hit early on but the Panthers would tie the score, 1-1, in the fifth and would score later in the 16th, knocking the Wildcats out of the tournament.
Danielle Bradley walked and advanced to second base, as Michelle Panasiti would sacrifice her over to put her into scoring position. First baseman Colby Wyatt would then double to left center and drive Bradley in and put the Wildcats up in the second inning.
The Panthers would answer back three innings later however, as second baseman Nicole Camera would walk and then score after left fielder Krista King drove her home on a single to right center, bringing the score to 1-1 after five complete innings. The game would remain tied until called for darkness after the 12th inning.
Both team struggled to put runners on base, let alone scoring position, in the extra innings. The Wildcats left Cambria Ziemba on second in the 10th, Becca Stanley on first in the 14th, and Chelsea Botsch and Michelle Panasiti on second and third in the 16th, their best opportunity of Saturday morning.
Botsch, who tossed all 16 innings, left single Panthers on base in the 10th, 11th, 13th, and 15th innings. Panthers' shortstop Victoria Wink singled to lead off the bottom of the 16th before third basemen Brenna Martini cleared the bases with a game winning home run to give the Panthers the victory, 3-1.
Botsch would bounce right back however, getting right back into the circle against Pace in an elimination game. The senior only allowed a first inning hit through the first four innings, allowing the offense the chance to get on the board.
With one swing of the bat Bradley put the Wildcats ahead, 1-0, in the top of the fifth inning, leading off the frame with a solo shot to left field. Botsch again shut the Settars down in order in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings before the offense struck again.
With two outs and Bradley on first after a leadoff walk, Kelsey Doherty tripled to right center, chasing Bradley home for the insurance run.
A dropped fly ball and a walk brought the winning run to the plate for Pace in the bottom of the seventh, but Botsch buckled down and induced a fly ball out to left before striking out her fifth batter of the game to end the game, keeping the Wildcats alive.
The Wildcats left 13 base runners on in the first game and six more in the nightcap, unable to come up with the big hit or else the Wildcats would be talking about playing for a Regional 1 Championship.
Doherty batted 3-for-7 against Adelphi and 3-for-4 against Pace while Ziemba picked up two hits against Adelphi one more against Pace.
Botsch threw 15 innings against Adelphi, striking out 10 while only allowing one walk and 12 hits in the tough luck loss. She earned the win by going all seven innings against Pace, striking out five while allowing one hit and one walk.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team is adding three signees to an already potent 2015 soccer team, as head coach Nick Papanicolas announces the addition of Vinny Tasca, Patrick Spagnuolo, and Morgan Shutter for this coming fall.
The Wildcats finished 13-8 this past fall, advancing all the way to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship match before falling, 1-0. The Wildcats graduate only two members from the 2014 squad.
Papanicolas welcomes Shutter, a junior college transfer from Tompkins Cortland Community College, and two high school graduates in Tasca (Methacton (PA)) and Spagnuolo (Christiana (DE)).
Shutter was named a NJCAA and NSCAA Second Team All-American as a sophomore in 2014, leading the team to a 12-6 record at Tompkins Cortland CC. He collected more than double the points than the second best player on the team, scoring 16 goals and adding two assists for 34 points in 18 games. He is a two-time NSCAA and NJCAA All-American, and was named the Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore.
Shutter joins the Wildcats after a four-year varsity career at Odessa-Montour High School in Odessa, N.Y. Shutter left Odessa-Montour and the Interscholastic Athletic Conference as the all-time leading goal scorer (as of 2012), tallying 93 career goals. He also set an IAC season record of 33 goals as a senior. He was named the IAC MVP three times in high school in addition to All-League.
Tasca was named a Pac-10 Honorable Mention goalkeeper at Methacton high school as a senior in 2014. He played two seasons on varsity at Methacton, being named a co-captain in his senior year this past fall. He also plays for the West-Mont United '96 travel team, helping the team to a MSSL Rider Cup Championship.
Spagnuolo joins the hometown Wildcats after four years on varsity at Christiana High School, minutes away from the WU Athletics Complex. Spagnuolo was named a Second Team All-State player as a sophomore and junior before earning a spot in the Top-11 as a senior this past fall. He's a two-time Team MVP and two-time team captain. He also competed for the Kirkwood Soccer Club U18 team, reaching the national tournament while he was a member.
The three signees will join the Wildcats in August when preseason for the 2015 season begins.

RINDGE, N.H. - - A three-run eighth inning pushed the Wilmington University baseball team past Southern New Hampshire, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA East Regional Tournament on Thursday night at Franklin Pierce's Pappas Field.
The Penmen (30-13) had a leadoff single and a two-run home run in the first two batters of the bottom of the first, but Wildcat (34-12) starter Jamie Treml settled in from there, tossing a strong eight innings while striking out 12.
The Wildcats didn't collect a hit off Penmen starter Cole Warren the top of the sixth inning, as Sean Feeney led off the frame with a single to left field. The offense only left solo runners on in the top of the second, sixth, and seventh innings before the offense came alive in the top of the eighth.
With Warren still on the mound in the top of the eighth, the Wildcats put the first two runners of the inning on with hit-by-pitches, setting up the rest of the inning. After Warren picked up an out on a strikeout, Frank Samluk doubled to right center to put the Wildcats on the board. Feeney then raced home to tie the game on a passed ball, also allowing Samluk to move to third.
Jon Castro roped a ball to the gap in left center, but Kyle McGinnity tracked the ball down in left center for the Penmen, driving to make the second out of the inning. The ball was deep enough to score Samluk, however, giving the Wildcats the 3-2 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Penmen threatened with a hit and an error, putting runners on first and third. Treml induced a fly ball to center to end the threat and get out of the jam unscathed.
Tyler Fries relieved Treml in the bottom of the ninth, working around a leadoff single by picking up two strikeouts before inducing a foul out to first base to end the game.
Treml struck out 12 while only allowing the two first inning runs on five hits. He improved to 8-0 on the year with the win, not having lost since April 1, 2012. Fries picked up his 11th save of the season while Warren fell to 2-2 on the year for the Penmen.
With the win, the Wildcats move on to play second seeded Stonehill on Friday at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks defeated Dowling, 5-2, in the second game on Thursday.

Reed Dazzles As Rocks Win Series Over Potomac
Cody Reed and Luke Farrell Combine For Second Shutout Of The Season

WILMINGTON, DE – Another strong pitching performance coupled with some timely, late offense led the Blue Rocks to a series win over Potomac as they won the rubber-game of their three-game series 1-0. Cody Reed turned in arguably his most impressive outing of the season for Wilmington as he went six scoreless frames before handing it off to his piggyback partner Luke Farrell to close the door on the last three innings. The Rocks now hold a one game lead over the Frederick Keys in the Carolina League Northern Division.

After struggling to find any answer to the puzzle that was Potomac starter Lucas Giolito over the first five innings, the Rocks finally managed to crack the scoreboard in the sixth. First, Wednesday night’s hero Ramon Torres led off the frame with a looping line drive single over the head of shortstop Stephen Perez. Jack Lopez then followed Torres with a sacrifice attempt, but Lopez would be paid off with a single on a perfectly placed bunt in no-man’s land up the first-base line. Lopez reached with a bunt single for the second consecutive night. Mauricio Ramos then tried to follow up Lopez with a sac bunt of his own, but Ramos could not get it down and ended up striking out on a foul bunt, keeping the runners at first and second. Despite Ramos’ inability to move up the runners, Frank Schwindel was able to bring home the opening run of the ballgame with an RBI single into right as Lopez went from first to third on the hit. The Rocks looked poised for more off of Giolito, but he got a groundball double play from Robert Pehl to escape further damage.

Wilmington had other opportunities in this game, but were unable to cash in a big hit aside from the Schwindel RBI-knock in the sixth. Schwindel led off the second inning with his first triple of the season, meaning the Rocks had three chances to get the first run of the game in, but they were not successful. Pehl and Cam Gallagher struck out in succession and, after a walk to Dominique Taylor, Dex Kjerstad struck out as well to get Giolito out of the frame with the tie still in tact.

The Nationals had their offensive chances as well in this one. Potomac managed seven hits in the ballgame, five of which came off of the starter Reed. Narciso Mesa led off the third inning with a single and Isaac Ballou tried to move him over with a bunt, but the ball went right back to Reed on the mound and he gunned down Mesa at second to stop the runner from reaching scoring position. This ended up being a big play as Christopher Bostick followed that up with a single, but he and Ballou would be stranded at first and second. Potomac also left the tying run at second base in the top of the ninth inning. Drew Ward reached with a one-out infield single. Tripp Keister would replace his DH with the speedy Estarlin Martinez. Martinez would end up getting into scoring position at second before Farrell got Brandon Miller to strikeout swinging to end the game.

The Rocks hit the road for a short three-game road trip in Lynchburg starting on Friday. The Rocks will send Alec Mills to the bump after Mills picked up a win over the Hillcats last Sunday. Game one of this series will feature the same pitching match-up as that game on Sunday as Luis Lugo gets the ball for Lynchburg. Lugo was roughed up by the Rocks on Sunday, giving up three runs in three laborious innings. First pitch from Lynchurg is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

The 1-0 win for the Blue Rocks on Thursday night was pretty indicative of the series. The Rocks and Nationals combined to score just eight runs (four runs apiece) in the three-game series. In those three games, each team took a shutout loss as the P-Nats beat the Rocks on the back of a strong outing by Reynaldo Lopez in the series opener, 2-0. Wednesday’s ten-inning affair was the highest scoring game of the set as the Rocks defeated Potomac 3-2 in extras. In the series, the Rocks batted a combined .215 (20-for-93), nearly .050 points behind their season average. Wilmington also struggled with runners in scoring position despite taking two out of their three games with Potomac. The Rocks went just 2-for-16 (.125) in run-scoring situations.

With the win on Thursday, the Rocks were able to close out their seven-game home stand with a winning record (4-3). The Rocks have now finished above .500 on every home stand this season. They started the season going 4-3 against the Nationals and Frederick Keys in their first home stand of the year. They went 5-2 on their next home stand, taking two out of three from Myrtle Beach and three out of four games from Winston-Salem. The Rocks are now 13-8 at Frawley Stadium this year.

The Rocks have gotten some impressive performances from both of their piggyback combos this season. Reed and Farrell combined for the Rocks second shutout victory of the year on Thursday, their first since the opening series against Myrtle Beach. Wilmington is now 5-2 in games started by either Reed of Farrell. Reed is posting the lowest ERA of any Wilmington starter (1.69) and he now leads the team in wins (3), while Farrell leads the club in strikeouts (41). You can’t forget about the other piggyback combo of Yender Caramo and Luis Rico who have also been dominant this year for Wilmington. Caramo went seven innings in the loss on Tuesday night, while Rico set down all six batters he would face in relief. Although Wilmington is 3-4 in games started by Caramo or Rico, two of those four losses were by just a single run and Tuesday’s loss by two runs.

With the call-up of Zane Evans and Bubba Starling to Double-A, the Rocks need a steady bat in the middle of their order and, so far, Frank Schwindel has stepped up to the plate. With his go-ahead RBI on Thursday, Schwindel now has 16 RBIs this season while hitting to a tune of .288. He leads the Blue Rocks in extra-base hits (15) and total bases (60). Despite not being known for his foot-speed, Schwindel also collected his first three-bagger of the year in the second inning.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“(Our pitching) was outstanding. (Cody) Reed came in, we made some plays behind him, which helped, and Luke (Farrell) coming in and making those big pitches when we need them (was good). They both did outstanding.”

“(Lucas Giolito) is a big guy. (He has) a good fastball, good breaking ball, decent changeup, and can throw that good breaking ball for a strike when he wants it. When he needs a strike out, he can bury you and get some swings and misses. He’s definitely a very talented pitcher.”

“(Facing good pitching) is part of the process of the minor leagues. You face guys that have big stuff, and I think (Lucas Giolito) was one of them today. That curveball, he’s deceptive with that, (and) his fastball gets on hitters. He throws hard but he gets on hitters. It looks harder than it is…That’s why you play the game, that’s part of the process…(Reynaldo) Lopez and Giolito, they can both probably be in Triple-A right now and be fine.”

“It’s been (lots of close games) all year. I looked at (the stats) today, and we played (32) games, and I think about 30 of them are (decided by) three runs or less…The vast majority of our games are three runs or less, and I think that has to do with playing in (Frawley Stadium). Neither team scores a lot of runs, so it’s very beneficial (to play lots of close games). It teaches them fundamentals of the game. If you don’t do the fundamentals correctly, you won’t win those games. That’s what the Royals are about, bunting, hitting and running, throwing to the right base. All that kind of stuff helps in this environment.”

Pitcher Luke Farrell

“(The piggybacking works because) I think there is just a trust and a faith in the other guy, that when you (come into the day), you will be in a good position for when you come into the game later on. But it has been fun going back and forth with Cody (Reed). We look forward to each start and each relief appearance.”

“(These two wins are) a confidence builder for sure because the three guys we faced this week from Potomac are some of the best arms in the league. So for our staff to go up and match up against them and our hitters to score enough runs for us to get a (win) is huge.”

“(Winning the last game at home before a road trip makes for) a happy bus ride I think. It is always good to go into the end of a series with a win, obviously. Hopefully we can keep building and build a streak. We faced Lynchburg earlier this week, so we have an idea of what they do now and what they can do so that is another good lineup and another good matchup for us.”

“My mindset is always to look at (seeing a team recently) as an advantage. I am a pitcher who likes to have a plan and a plan of attack. So if I know a hitter’s tendencies, that certainly helps me. I feel like I have enough pitches and enough ability to change what he thinks about me and can affect his plan that he has against me.”

SUBJECT: Wildcats Come Back Again in the Eighth, Defeat Stonehill, 4-3, on Day Two of NCAA Division II East Region Baseball Tournament
DATE: May 15, 2015
djl
RINDGE, N.H. - - For the second night in a row the eighth inning provided the magic for the Wilmington University baseball team as it scored twice to overtake Stonehill, 4-3, to remain in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament hosted by Franklin Pierce University.
Senior Josh Swirchak singled in the game tying run with one out in the bottom of the eighth, bringing in Frank Samluk who walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Christian Adorno.
Now with the bases loaded and still one out in the inning, Mike Annone lofted one to right which fell between the right fielder and the second baseman, bringing in the go-ahead run in Swirchak.
Tyler Fries came on in the top of the ninth and allowed a leadoff single, but bunkered down to pick up his 12th save of the season. He induced a 5-4-3 double play to erase the base runner and Annone ended the game with a catch up against the fence down the left field line in foul ground, falling to the ground but securing the catch.
Jake Wersinger replaced the Wildcats' (35-12) starter Frank Samluk in the top of the seventh, tossing two solid innings of relief to keep the Wildcats within a run at 3-2. Wersinger earned the win to improve to 5-2 on the year in two innings of work, striking out two while allowing two singles. Samluk went the first six innings, striking out nine while allowing three runs on nine hits in the no decision.
Sam Goines started the scoring in the bottom of the first for the Wildcats, doubling inside the bag at third to score Adorno and Swirchak for the quick 2-0 lead.
Stonehill (34-14-1) scored all three runs in the top of the fourth inning, getting a two-out, two-run triple, and an RBI double to take the lead 3-2.
Skyhawk starter Armand Rugel went 7.1 innings, striking out five while allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Swirchak collected the game tying RBI off Stonehill reliever Aubrey Solomon who gave up allowed a unearned run on two hits in not picking up an out. Solomon fell to 2-2 on the year with the loss.
With the win, the Wildcats move on to play the winner of a St. Thomas Aquinas and Stonehill matchup at 10 p.m. on Saturday night. St. Thomas Aquinas and Stonehill play the first game of the day on Saturday at 3 p.m., with the winner moving on to face the Wildcats in the nightcap at 10 p.m.

RINDGE, N.H. - - The Wilmington University baseball team will play for a NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament Championship as they defeated top seeded and nationally top ranked Franklin Pierce, 5-3, in an elimination game on Sunday afternoon at Pappas Field.
With the win, the Wildcats will have a rematch against St. Thomas Aquinas in the final on Sunday at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the NCAA Division II World Series in Cary, N.C.
The Wildcats used a four run top of the fourth inning to take the lead, a lead they would never relinquish. With two outs and the bases empty, Matt Lopes started the rally with a single up the middle. Sean Feeney got a big bounce over the first baseman for runners on first and third. Christian Adorno loaded the bases by reaching on a catcher's interference call.
Mike Annone ripped the first pitch he saw passed a diving second baseman for two RBI and the ball snuck past the center fielder, allowing the third runner to come home and Annone to take third base. Brendan Fallers then laced a single back up the middle to bring in pinch runner Connor Stevens for the 4-1 lead.
Lopes added to the Wilmington lead with a single back up the middle in the top of the eighth, scoring Josh Swirchak who led off the frame by reaching on a hit-by-pitch.
Ray Gambone allowed a solo homer to left in the third and a single run in the bottom of the fifth but was relentless in his seven innings of work. Jake Wersinger picked up the first out of the eighth inning before turning it over to Tyler Fries.
The Raven loaded the bases in the eighth but only scored one run, as Fries induced a grounder back to the mound and a infield pop up to get out of the jam.
Fries allowed a base hit bunt to lead of the bottom of the ninth, but then induced a fielder's choice to second, and back-to-back fly outs to end the contest.
Gambone struck out seven in the win, improving to 5-1 on the year. Fries earned his 13th save of the season, tossing 1.2 innings.

CARY, N.C. - - The Wilmington University baseball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to second ranked Catawba in its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Baseball Finals on Saturday night at the USA Baseball National Training Center.
Despite only collected two hits in the contest, the Wildcats (37-14) had multiple chances to plate a few runs but left seven runners on base, including two in the third and seventh innings each.
Much like the start of the East Regional Tournament in which the Wildcats fell behind 2-0 after the first inning, Catawba (45-13) jumped out in front off starter Jamie Treml in the top of the first, scoring twice on a pair of doubles and a single in the inning.
After going down in order in the bottom of the first inning, the Wildcats were looking for their first ever hit of the NCAA Division II Baseball Finals and it came in a big way off the bat of senior Sam Goines to lead off the second.
Goines deposited a 2-0 pitch to the hill in left field, marking the first hit as a home run for the Wildcats. More importantly it cut the deficit in half early in the ballgame.
Treml settled into the ballgame after the top of the first, only allowing two hits the rest of his outing. The Indians added a run in the top of the fourth, as a leadoff walk came around to score on a sacrifice fly. The run would prove to a much-needed run for Catawba.
Sean Feeney walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth before being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Hawthorne. Two batters later Frank Samluk collected an infield single to put runners on first and third with two outs, but the Indians starter Shaefer Shepard induced an inning ending ground ball off the bat of Jon Castro.
The Wildcats cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Josh Swirchak and Sam Goines started the inning with back-to-back walks. Matt Lopes moved the runners along with a two-strike sacrifice bunt and Christian Adorno brought in a run with an RBI groundout to short. But that would be all the Wildcats would get in the inning as the Catawba bullpen found a way out.
Tory Manfre and Frank Samluk each walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh to put the tying run in scoring position, before Castro moved both runners into scoring position with another sacrifice bunt. But reliever Bryan Blanton was able to escape the jam again for the Indians, getting Swirchak to fly out to end the threat.
That would be the last base runner the Wildcats would have.
Reliever Craig Brooks came on in the bottom of the eighth for the six out save and picked up all six outs in succession to shut down the Wildcats.
Treml was saddled with the hard luck loss, striking out five while walking three and allowing five hits. It was his first loss since April 1, 2012 at Felician. HE is now 31-4 in his career as a Wildcat.
Rob Gore tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Wildcats, picking up a strikeout while allowing one hit before turning the ball over to Tyler Fries for a scoreless ninth.
The loss drops the Wildcats to the elimination portion of the bracket, as they face a win-or-go-home game on Monday afternoon against Angelo State. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at the USA Baseball National Training Center.

Wroble made herself an important part of the squad by competing in 30 contests with 23 starts that included 18 at second base. She notched 31 putouts on the season, 30 assists and had an inside-the-park home run April 1 against Chestnut Hill.

Wroble has been an active member of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and next year will serve as the secretary for the league’s SACC.

Rich Bowers Steps Down as Goldey-Beacom’s Volleyball Coach

Rich Bowers, who in two stints as Goldey-Beacom’s volleyball coach served 11 years and built the foundation for a solid program, has resigned to become head coach at North East High School.

Bowers’ first stint went from 2001-04, when the Lightning went a combined 65-56 with semifinal appearances in the 2002 NAIA Independent Region Tournament and the NAIA Region X Tournament. The 2001 squad advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals, both the 2003 and 2004 teams also played in the league tournament and Bowers was named CACC Coach of the Year in 2004.

Bowers helped lay the groundwork for the 2005 squad, which won its only CACC title to date and competed in the NCAA Tournament. This marked the first NCAA Tournament appearance for any team in school history.

Returning to the squad in 2008 after guiding Rising Sun High School, Bowers helped Goldey-Beacom to 14-win seasons in 2011 and 2014. This was highlighted by Kadi McCoy becoming the first player in school history to amass 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She was picked second team All-CACC in 2014 after being named Honorable Mention in 2011 and 2012.

“We would like to thank Rich for all his efforts leading our Women’s Volleyball program,” director of athletics Chuck Hammond said. “He was a great ambassador for GBC Athletics and he will be missed. We wish him well in his new position.”

A national search is underway to find his replacement.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season September 4 against Bowie State in West Chester, PA.

djl
NEWARK, Del. - - Wilmington University Director of Athletics Linda Andrzjewski is pleased to announce the hiring of Jeff Zoyac as the head coach of the Wildcats' women's soccer team, effective immediately.
"I'm humbled to be the next women's soccer coach at Wilmington," Zoyac said of his hiring. "I want to thank the University for this wonderful opportunity and for having the confidence in me to take over a program with so much tradition."
Zoyac becomes the fourth head coach of the women's soccer program in its NCAA era. He takes over the women's program after being an assistant and associate head coach for Nick Papanicolas and the men's program at Wilmington for the past 11 seasons.
During his time on the sidelines with Papanicolas, Zoyac has seen over 100 victories in 11 seasons, helping the Wildcats to an overall record of 115-80-23 and a 68-32-11 record inside the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Zoyac has been a part of one CACC Tournament Championship run (2007), and two NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament Second Round appearances (2009 and 2013).
Prior to coaching at Wilmington, Zoyac finished his collegiate career as a Wildcat, transferring from Rowan College after leading the Profs to a NCAA Division III National Semifinal appearance as a sweeper. Upon joining Wilmington in 2003, he led the Wildcats in scoring and was a crucial piece of their second CACC Championship. He finished his collegiate soccer career as an Honorable Mention All-CACC selection.
"It's an honor to start my collegiate head coaching career where I played and spent the past 11 years as an assistant coach. I also want to thank Nick (Papanicolas) for mentoring me during my playing and coaching career, and preparing me to take over my own program."
Outside of Wilmington, Zoyac has been coaching girls' club soccer at the New Jersey Rush Soccer Club since 2010. Under his tutelage, the U18's girls' team has claimed back-to-back U.S. Club New Jersey State Championships and has been ranked in the top-3 in the state in each of the past two seasons. Zoyac has also coached the U14 and U 16 teams at NJ Rush, leading each team into the top-10 in the state.
"We are excited to have Jeff begin his collegiate head coaching career here at Wilmington University," Andrzjewski said. "He knows the University and athletics program very well, and I am confident our student-athletes will enjoy the opportunity to work with him."

Goldey-Beacom’s men’s soccer team has announced defender/midfielder Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) and goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) signed National Letters of Intent to compete next fall.

Bismilla in 2012 had 14 shutouts in a row for EAI Randburg Academy in South Africa, winning Player-of-the-Year honors for his club and the Golden Glove for his school. He also competed for Bidvest Wits FC Academy and was part of the Safa Academy League, the country’s highest youth league. Bismilla was picked Goalkeeper of the Tournament in the Manchester United Premier Cup and four times was called up to South Africa’s U-17 squad, earning one cap.

“Chahin has all the qualities to be an outstanding winger,” Goldey-Beacom coach Ryan Dixon said. “He is quick, technical on both sides of the ball, and very good 1 vs. 1. He played at the highest youth level in Germany. His skill and experience will make him a great addition to our team. He should play an integral role for this upcoming season.

“Suhail is a very impressive keeper. He has the height, ability and experience to become one of the best keepers in our conference his freshmen year. He played at the highest youth level in South Africa and has earned Youth National Team Caps.”

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Chosen to Finish Eighth in the CACC

Following an impressive 2014 season, Goldey-Beacom was picked to finish eighth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference based on a vote of the league’s coaches.

Goldey-Beacom last year had a winning overall record (9-6-1) for the firsttime since 2003, a winning CACC mark (6-5-1) for the first time since 2005 and played in the conference tournament for the first time since 2006.

It is a shame GBC only plays seven road games since last season it won eight such contests for the first time in school history. But it will have a chance to duplicate last year’s record of winning seven straight road matches.

Senior Megan Harvis (Delran, NJ/Delran) is one of the returnees who will be looked at for major contributions. She ended the 2014 campaign, her first on the club, with eight assists and closed 13th in the nation with 0.57 assists per game. Harvis is just two assists outside of the school’s career top-10 list.

Sophomore Amy Runciman (Luton, England) was no slouch with her passing, closing with six assists that had her 67th in the country with 0.38 per contest.

After winning last year’s battle for the role as top goalkeeper, junior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) is back. She enters the season third in school history with a 2.39 goals against average and fifth with 98 saves.

The Lightning ended last season seventh in the country with 2.25 assists per game, eighth with 7.63 points per contest and 11th with 2.69 goals per game. GBC also is four victories shy of reaching 100 in team history.

Philadelphia U. unanimously was picked to repeat as champions with 12 first-place votes. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team.

Goldey-Beacom commences its season September 4 with a neutral-site match against Barton in Mount Olive, NC.

The Wildcats' (1-0) game was the nightcap of day one of the Wildcat Invitational, as the District of Columbia played Bloomfield to a 3-3 draw in the day's first game.
Berry picked up right where he left off from 2014, converting the penalty after being fouled near the end line in the right corner of the 18-yard box. He scored the final goal of the 2014 season for the Wildcats, a penalty kick in double overtime against Dominican in the CACC Tournament Semifinals.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Men's Soccer Holds Off the District of Columbia, 4-2, in Wildcat Invitational
DATE: September 5, 2015
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team fought off a comeback to defeat the University of the District of Columbia, 4-2, in the final game of the Wildcat Invitational at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Lance Berry carried the offense for the Wildcats (2-0), as she scored two goals and added an assist on the final goal to help stave off the Firebirds (0-1-1).
The Wildcats never trailed in the contest, but the Firebirds tied the match in the 34th minute, and again cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 76th minute. The Wildcats managed to quickly answer every attack of the Firebirds, scoring shortly after each UDC goal.
Berry started the scoring in the 16th minute, volleying in a cross from the endline by Jamie Burridge. The cross was just out of the reach of the Firebirds' goalie, tipping off his fingers and going right to Berry on the six-yard line.
The Wildcats dominated possession and the shot chart in the first 33 minutes, but the Firebirds cashed in on their first shot of the game in the 34th minute. Following a service into the box on a free kick, Aaron Noel found the back of the net on the loose ball, tying the match.
Moments later in the 39th minute, Josh Fawssett capitalized on an excellent service from Geoff Velasques for his first goal of the year, redirecting the cross with his head for the 2-1 lead.
Following the halftime break, Berry was at it again as he pushed the Wildcats' lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal in the 57th minute. Berry bullied his way into the box on a run form the left side, scoring his third goal of the season in the early going.
UDC wouldn't go away, however, as the Firebirds cut the deficit to 3-2 with a goal in the 76th minute, surprising everyone. UDC's Victor Furio passed the ball to the middle of the field, but behind intended target Byron Brown. Brown reached behind him and rainbow kicked the ball over everyone, including Frank Hall in goal, for the mark.
The Wildcats put the game away in the 88th minute though, getting a goal from newcomer Clifford Nwechefom on a break-away. Berry played a long ball over the top, allowing Nwechefom to run onto it for his first goal as a Wildcat.
Wilmington outshot the Firebirds, 10-1 in the first half, but only 16-10 for the match. The Wildcats also took more corners, 4-3, in the game.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Hires Two Assistants Coaches, Including Former GBC Standout Taylor Leonard

After a highly successful run as a player for Goldey-Beacom women’s basketball team, Taylor Leonard (Lake Katrine, NY/John A. Coleman) will remain a member of the program as an assistant coach.

The squad also announced that Rashaun Rasheed, a recent graduate of Wilmington University, will join the staff as an assistant coach.

Leonard provided a great deal to the program and her leadership, helped by her role as team captain last season, made her a perfect fit for this position. She graduated fourth in school history with 243 assists and fourth with 103 three-pointers.

“Taylor was an exemplary student-athlete for the women’s basketball program throughout her career at Goldey-Beacom College,” head coach Bethann Burke said. “She has a bright future ahead of her and I am very excited to add her to our coaching staff.”

Leonard played two games during the 2010-11 season before succumbing to injury. Still, she was part of the squad that went on to clinch the program’s first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship and first NCAA Tournament berth. Leonard battled from that to play 112 more games and start 104, including 34.8 minutes per game with 30 starts in 2013-14.

During that 2013-14 campaign, she shot 34 percent from three-point range and had over three assists per game in pacing the Lightning to the ECAC Tournament final. The victories over Merrimack in the quarterfinals and Caldwell in the semifinals were the squad’s first two postseason triumphs as an NCAA program.

The 2014-15 campaign saw Leonard start all 29 contests, shooting 36 percent from the field and leading Goldey-Beacom to the CACC Tournament. The Lightning won 13 of their last 23 games on the season and clinched a league-tournament berth for a team-record sixth straight year.

Rasheed is coming off a season for Wilmington in which he averaged 6.1 points per game, shot 52 percent from the field and grabbed 3.6 rebounds per contest. He competed in 31 games with 18 starts, helping the Wildcats reach the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference final.

Rasheed also was the head camp counselor for the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware for four year and was an intern for both the Select AAU Basketball Club and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season October 31 with an exhibition contest at Maryland, which last season competed in the Final Four.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Men's Soccer Scores Three Goals in Second Half, Escape Bloomfield, 4-3, in CACC Opener
DATE: September 9, 2015

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - - The Wilmington University men's soccer team made a second half comeback and then hung on down the stretch to defeat Bloomfield, 4-3, in both team's 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Wednesday night at Foley Field.
The backline and goalkeeper Frank Hall was testing earlier and often on Wednesday, getting outside 10-9 in the first half, but Hall came up with four saves in the first half to give the Wildcats (3-0, 1-0 CACC) a chance. Three of his four first half saves came prior to the Wildcats' first goal.
Clifford Nwechefom broke a scoreless tie in the 35th minute for the Wildcats, making the Bears (0-2-1, 0-1 CACC) pay for a costly turnover. Bloomfield starting goalkeeper Jovan Stanojkovic misplayed a ball out of his own box, playing the ball to Nwechefom in the midfield. Nwechefom side volleyed the ball on one bounce, beating the keeper back to the net for the wide-open goal from 25 yards out.
But the Bears responded before the half, scoring a pair of goals on back-to-back shots, just under two minutes apart. Shaunavon DeSouza tied the game in the 42nd minute before Rafique Roberts gave the home team the lead with a goal in the 44th minute.
Out of the halftime break, the Bears kept the pressure on Hall and the Wildcats' defense, but Hall came up with a breakaway save keeping the Wildcats to within a goal. The Wildcats answered just over a minute later, tying the game as Jamie Burridge knocked in his first goal of the season in the 54th minute.
The Wildcats regained the lead 10 minutes later, as sophomore newcomer Alex Luke slammed home a rebound on bobbled ball by the Bears' netminder. Lance Berry directed a free kick on goal which was initially stopped, but Luke was there for his first goal as a Wildcat and the 3-2 lead in the 63rd minute.
Steven O'Connor beat reserved netminder Wilson Cisneros in the 74th inning to give the Wildcats a 4-2 lead, which proved to be a much needed mark. Bloomfield clawed back to within a goal as DeSouza scored his second of the match in the 79th minute to make it 4-3.
Hall and the defense held off the Bear for the remaining 11 minutes, as Hall recorded two saves down the stretch to give the visitors the victory.
Luke led all Wildcats with a goal and an assist on the night while Adrian Tash and Lance Berry added assists to round out the point getters in the contest.
In all, Hall made seven saves in goal for the Wildcats while Stanojkovic recorded three in net for the Bears in the first 67:45 of the match. Cisneros did not record a save in the final 22:15 for the Bears.
The Wildcats are off from action for the next six days before they head to East Coast Conference power LIU Post next Wednesday. The opening tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
