SUBJECT: Williams and Wyrough Lead Wilmington Women's Soccer to 2-1 CACC Victory over Felician
DATE: September 19, 2015
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - Key saves from sophomore goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams preserved a 2-1 victory for the Wilmington University women's soccer team over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Felician on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.
On multiple occasions, the netminder looked beat when the ball was kicked, but Williams was able to get a able on the ball way above her head and deflect the ball off the crossbar and out of the back of the net.
Sophomore Loran Wyrough led the offensive attack, which scored all its goals in the first half, getting on the board in the 28th minute before the game winner in the final minute of the half.
Sophomore Chandler Lages put the Wildcats (2-2, 2-1 CACC) on the board first, scoring her first goal of the season 27:04 into the match. Lages received a cross from the left side from Wyrough, corralled the ball with the first touch and volleyed it home from the six-yard mark for the 1-0 lead.
But the Golden Falcons (1-3, 1-1 CACC) retaliated on their next offensive attack, quickly tying the game 24 seconds later.
The game remained tied until the final minute of the half, before Rebecca Dolhansky fed Wyrough with a through ball down the middle of the field. Wyrough was in on the Felician keeper and slotted the shot home with 42 seconds remaining on the board.
Wyrough has a few more open field chances in the second half to extend the lead, but Felician goalkeeper Julia Sheridan came up with the save each time to keep the Golden Falcons in the contest.
Both Williams and Sheridan recorded 10 saves in the contest, with Williams recorded five in each half to secure the victory.
Felician led the game in shots, 23-14, while also earning more corners, 7-1, but the Wilmington defense heard firm with a bulk of those shots coming outside the 18-yard box.

SUBJECT: Lance Berry Buries Late Penalty Kick to Carry Wilmington Men's Soccer, 1-0, at Holy Family
DATE: September 22, 2015
djl
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - It took nearly 87 minutes for the Wilmington University men's soccer team to break through at Holy Family and it was a Lance Berry penalty kick that sealed the deal, 1-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference battle on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats (5-1, 3-0 CACC) led the Tigers (0-6, 0-2 CACC) both shots, 1706, and corners, 10-2, but they couldn't find the back of the net as Tiger net minder Richard Ongaro held firm, making seven saves.
The Wildcats caught a break early in the contest, as the Tigers' James Annobil's shot got past Wilmington goalkeeper Frank Hall, but hit the post and stayed out in the 16th minute.
For the rest of the first half, the Wildcats out shot the Tigers, 7-3, and nearly got on the board in the 36th minute. Clifford Nwechefom's shot got past Ongaro but stayed out of the back of the net as a defender made a team save, keeping the game scoreless.
After the break, the Wildcats outshot the Tigers, 8-2, and earned more corners, 6-1, in the second 45 minutes. Again, it was one of the Tigers' shots that had the best chance. Annobil again put a ball on frame, this time hitting the crossbar in the 65th minute.
The Wildcats put five shots on frame in the second half, but couldn't find a way to beat Ongaro until late in the contest.
Following a foul in the box, Berry buried his sixth goal of the season and second penalty kick 86:33 into the contest to count as the lone goal of the game.
Hall recorded two saves in the game, both coming in the first half, to record his second shutout of the season.
The Wildcats remain on the road for two more contests, traveling to Concordia this Saturday for another CACC contest. The Clippers are ranked seventh in this week's NSCAA Division II East Region Poll while Wilmington is ranked fifth. Concordia fell at Nyack, 3-2, in overtime on Tuesday, however.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Handed 3-0 Loss by Post

Despite gaining a shots advantage, Goldey-Beacom gave up a penalty kick late in the first half and was dealt a tough 3-0 loss by Post in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning outshot the Eagles, 10-6, in the first half and looked to pounce on their opportunities in a battle of teams who entered tied for fifth place in the CACC. But it was the visitors who cracked the scoreboard first as Tiago Martins converted a penalty kick in the 37th minute for a 1-0 Post lead.

The second half remained a tight battle as the Eagles opened a 2-0 cushion in the 69th minute. Martins had a shot that was deflected and Armando Filho put away the rebound for his first goal of the season.

Post cemented the match in the 85th minute when Jacob Butler-Bowdon lifted a cross that Martins headed in for his fourth goal of the year to close the scoring.

Martins ended with five shots and Jon Hanlon made five saves for the Eagles (4-4, 3-2 CACC).

Sophomores Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) and Manuel Berto (Valencia, Spain) each had three shots and freshman Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) amassed four saves for the Lightning (2-5, 2-3), who owned a 14-9 lead in shots.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday to visit East Stroudsburg for a 7:00 pm start.
