AST LANSING, Mich. – Three bonus-point victories helped Northwestern upset No. 14 Michigan State, 24-16, in Big Ten wrestling action on Friday night in Jenison Field House.

A pin by second-ranked Ryan Deakin over sophomore Chase Saldate in the 157-pound bout extended a Wildcat edge to 15-3, a deficit MSU could never overcome as the Spartans moved to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten duals. For Northwestern, the win brought them to 5-4 and 3-4 in the conference.

Starting at 125 pounds, No. 13 Michael DeAugustino put Northwestern in front early when he won a 4-0 decision against sophomore Tristan Lujan, but redshirt senior Rayvon Foley answered for MSU with a 6-2 decision over eighth-ranked Chris Cannon, giving the 133-pound Foley his first top-10 win of the season.

The Wildcats then won three-straight matches, as 144-pounder Frankie Tal-Shahar needed extra time to defeat graduate student Matt Santos by a 3-1 sudden-victory decision, while No. 11 Yahya Thomas was able to defend a late push from redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania for a 5-3 decision in the 149 bout. Deakin put the Wildcats up big when he recorded the 4:33 fall against No. 17 Saldate, but 165-pound sophomore Caleb Fish got MSU right back in it when he fully turned David Ferrante at the 2:20 mark for his own pin and cut the NU lead to 15-9.

Northwestern quelled the Spartan momentum at 174 when Troy Fisher earned the 12-4 major decision over redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez. The Spartans nearly had another pin at 184 when redshirt junior Layne Malczewski turned Jack Jessen early but Malczewski had to settle for a four-point near-fall and eventually a 15-2 major decision. At 197 pounds, No. 29 Andrew Davison then gave redshirt senior Cameron Caffey a tough battle, but Caffey got a third-period takedown to rally and pick up a 4-3 decision for his ninth-straight victory. With Northwestern up 19-16 entering the heavyweight match, the younger Davison brother, 10th-ranked Lucas, put together a 19-4 technical fall against redshirt senior Brad Wilton to lock up the Wildcat victory.

Michigan State concludes Big Ten dual-meet action on Sunday, Feb. 13 at No. 3 Michigan, as the two rivals will wrestle for the 77th-consecutive season at noon in Cliff Keen Arena.

Bout-By-Bout
125: No. 13 Michael DeAugustino (NU) dec. Tristan Lujan (MSU), 4-0

Some early attempts by both sides did not lead to any legitimate chances, until DeAugustino had a shot in the final minute of the first period end in a stalemate, taking the two sides to the second frame. With Lujan on top to start, DeAugustino escaped in a hurry and got Lujan in a headlock until another stalemate was called. DeAugustino got Lujan in a single-leg on the restart, eventually getting the takedown in the final seconds of the period. Lujan went bottom in the third, and nearly had a reversal but a stalemate call allowed DeAugustino to ride him the rest of the frame, as a 4-0 decision with riding time earned the Wildcat a victory.

133: No. 11 Rayvon Foley (MSU) dec. No. 8 Chris Cannon (NU), 6-2
Foley was able to get behind Cannon and pick up a takedown in the opening minute, building up 0:59 of riding time before Cannon broke free on a restart. Cannon eventually got Foley in a single leg, but Foley defended it for the rest of the opening period. Foley went down in the second, quickly escaping and adding another takedown, but a locked-hands call on Foley gave Cannon a penalty point. With Foley on top in the third, he continued to ride Cannon for the entire frame and finished with a 6-2 decision after 3:49 of riding time.

141: Frankie Tal-Shahar (NU) dec. Matt Santos (MSU), 3-1 (SV-1)
Santos worked his way out of an early single-leg shot by Tal-Shahar and defended the rest of the period to end the first scoreless. Tal-Shahar got the early escape in the second period, as hand-fighting rounded out the frame but not before a stall warning on Santos. Santos then got the escape in the third period, defending a Tal-Shahar attack and getting his own shot in before a stalemate call. Tal-Shahar’s late shot failed, sending the bout to sudden-victory. In the extra period, Tal-Shahar eventually converted on a takedown to win a 3-1 sudden-victory decision.

149: No. 11 Yahya Thomas (NU) dec. Peyton Omania (MSU), 5-3
Omania and Thomas got into a few early scrambles, but the opening frame ended scoreless. Omania went on top in the second, as Thomas escaped quickly and scored a takedown about halfway through the period. Omania got the escape shortly after on a restart, as the two hand fought for the remainder of the frame. With Omania down in the third, he got free early but Thomas soon got another takedown that Omania quickly escaped from and made his own attempt out of it. A late stalemate led to Thomas securing a 5-3 decision.

157: No. 2 Ryan Deakin (NU) fall over No. 17 Chase Saldate (MSU), 4:33
A takedown by Deakin in the first 15 seconds of the bout set the tone, but Saldate escaped in short order. Deakin converted another takedown later in the period, building over two minutes of riding time before the first buzzer. Saldate was on top to begin the second, but Deakin escaped and scored another takedown before getting a four-point near-fall. Deakin then got the 4:33 pin his second attempt at the turn, keeping the Wildcat undefeated.

165: Caleb Fish (MSU) fall over David Ferrante (NU), 2:20
Scrambling early, Ferrante got the takedown near the edge of the circle after a single-leg grab, but Fish escaped, getting a takedown and then turning Ferrante for a 2:20 fall.

174: Troy Fisher (NU) major dec. Nathan Jimenez (MSU), 12-4
Fisher got the takedown 45 seconds into the match, while Jimenez got the escape but Fisher got another takedown that Jimenez escaped from before the end of the first period. With Jimenez on top in the second, Fisher got free and added a takedown to build up to 1:13 riding time. Jimenez went down in the third, getting free but Fisher got a fourth takedown and fifth takedown with a Jimenez escape to get the 12-4 major decision after tallying over 2:00 of RT.

184: No. 19 Layne Malczewski (MSU) major dec. Jack Jessen (NU), 15-2
Jessen got an early takedown, but Malczewski got an escape, takedown and four near-fall points in short order, riding Jessen for 2:18 before the first horn. Malczewski got the escape in the second after going down, but a stalemate prevented his shot on Jessen earning a takedown. Neutral in the third, Malczewski got the takedown and a four-point near fall before a restart, but could not get another turn and finished with a 15-2 major decision with over three minutes of riding time.

197: No. 7 Cameron Caffey (MSU) dec. No. 29 Andrew Davison (NU), 4-3
Both sides got early shots, but neither wrestler earned points in the first. Caffey went top in the second, but Davison escaped and got the single-leg takedown. A restart allowed Caffey to escape and the two ended the frame with hand-fighting. Caffey escaped again in the third, and flipped Davison’s attempt on his leg into a Spartan takedown, riding Davison for the rest of the bout and picking up a 4-3 decision.

285: No. 10 Lucas Davison (NU) tech. fall over Brad Wilton (MSU), 19-4
Davison put up two early takedowns, as Wilton quickly escaped both times but the third takedown led to four near-fall points and a 10-2 lead at the end of the first. Davison escaped to open the second, eventually working another takedown. He then allowed Wilton to escape, but added a fifth takedown before letting Wilton up again. A stalling point and a sixth takedown, along with the riding time bonus, gave Davison the 19-4 technical fall.
