OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University sophomore Tate Orndorff has been named The Open Mat's College Wrestler of the Week after going a perfect 5-0 at the Journeymen Northeast Duals and the Journeymen Collegiate Classic over the weekend with a pair of upset victories over No. 2 Tanner Hall of Arizona State and No. 3 Jordan Wood of Lehigh.
The Wolverine heavyweight started his season with a pair of first period falls on Saturday in UVU's duals with Sacred Heart and Purdue. He first pinned SHU's Connor Fredericks in 2:16 before managing to stick and pin Purdue's David Eli in 1:29.
At the tournament on Sunday, Orndorff started his day off with a 16-3 major decision over Big 12 Conference foe Connor Webb in Oklahoma. In his next bout, against the third-ranked 285-pounder and returning All-American Wood of Lehigh who finished fourth at the 2019 NCAA Championships in March, Orndorff was able to turn the tables and notch a 5-2 win thanks to a pair of third-period takedowns after previously falling to Wood, 6-0, last season. The first was scored with Orndorff pushing the pace, while he fended off a late charge by Wood on the second takedown. Orndorff's day was not finished, however, as he still needed to get by another former NCAA third-place finisher and All-American in No. 2 Hall of Arizona State. From the opening whistle, Orndorff controlled the hand-fighting battles and the center of the mat against Hall. Two of Orndorff's three points were from stalling calls against the Sun Devil big man as he came out on top, 3-1, to win the 285A Journeymen Collegiate Classic title. Orndorff was ranked as high as 10th in his weight class last week.
Orndorff also recently represented the United States at the U23 World Championships in Greco-Roman. Orndorff was able to win his opening match before falling in the quarterfinals. As a freshman, in 2018-19, Orndorff finished third in the Big 12 and was able to win two bouts at the NCAA Championships before his elimination. Utah Valley will be off this week, but Orndorff will see if he can continue his hot start when the Wolverines host South Dakota State on Nov. 22 and No. 7 Wisconsin on Nov. 23. The Wisconsin dual sets up a potential matchup with another All-American in Trent Hillger, who is currently 5-0 in 2019-20.
With his big outing last week, Orndorff was also listed as the No. 1 performance of the week in The Open Mat's Top 10 Performances. He was also mentioned by FloWrestling in the publication's Week 2 Upsets column.
