By David A. Willauer-Contributing Editor-Howard High School-Wilmington, DE-Thursday, February 6, 2014-In a special ceremony that was marked the history of Howard High School Basketball at the conclusion of the game 11 alumni from the 1970's, 1980's 1990's 2000's and 2010 were honored after the Howard and Christiana girls basketball game before the boys game was about to start.

Coming to this event was a time where I reminisance and socialize with some of the Howard alumni that used to play here and to talk about the powerful city high school teams in Wilmington which bring me memories and talk about the tradition of how great those Howard teams were and when they won state titles, along with the good ol other city of Wilmington schools that used to be in existance in Wilmington High School Red Devils where they have won numersous boys state basketball titles which was changed to The Charter School of Wilmington in 1999 and good ol PS DuPont High School became a middle school when the bussing came in the fall of 1978, near Prices Run Park where a lot of people play pickup basketball games at the end of 36th and Market Street, but inside the school is loaded with history and tradition of the school that now has a history room that brings a lot of memories about the good ol days of the Wilmington vs. PS DuPont Thanksgiving Day City football rivalry and as they also play Howard.

Brendan Haley Salesianum Head Men's Basketball Coach: "The kids played well tonight as we're sitting there and looked like a team with expectations with a lot of alumni and we looked a little burdened the other night I spoke to my assistants they told me that our team was ready to play and were loose out there." On the girls side you have Monique Foote who used to play with us and went onto the University of Virginia and is currently teaching at Maurice Moyer Academy. Our ladies played with a lot of class and dignity." "I see Nai-te all the time as vice president of M and T Bank he is a great person." "I had talked to him in going to Philadelphia Textile which is now Philadelphia University under current head coach Herbie McGee recruited him to Philadelphia Textile and did well in basketball." Willauer-Contributing Editor-University of Delaware-Bob Carpenter Center-Saturday, March 8, 2014-Salesianum School known for their tradition of athletics along with an alumni following for football at Baynard Stadium and for basketball at the Father Birkenmeier Gymnasium located on 18th and Broom Street have won various state sports titles in all sports except one after making 5 previous appearances in 1974-75 lost to Cape Henlopen 83-48 under former Head Coach Frank Brady, 1982-83 to Wilmington High School 48-42 under former Head Coach Angelo Rossi, in 1990-91 lost to Sanford 72-57, 1992-93 in the first high school basketball game at the Bob Carpenter Center lost to Glasgow 79-69, 2003-04 lost to Middletown 59-54 under former Head Coach Michael Gallagher and after a 0-5 record finally history has been made for the Sals boys basketball team as on the sixth try they won their first state title by defeating a very competitive St. Georges Hawks squad who made their first state basketball tournament appearance and won by a 50-45 score.

jr sensation Dante DiVincenzo led the Sals after scoring 4 points at the half scored 14 more points for a total of 18 points and recorded 11 defensive rebounds in the contest while teammate and 6'7" 250 pounder amazing sr. Brian O Neal contributed with 15 points and recorded 9 rebounds in the contest.

Rod Griffin Boys Basketball Coach at St. Georges: "It was a great game I think we struggled in the beginning ready to shift the future is bright along with seniors a lot of things go on in games how did this happen it was a good game Lamar Hamrick did very well and had an outstanding game."

Brendan Healy Boys Basketball at Salesianum: "We came out hot and cold in the beginning as we led in then hit a wall credit Saint Georges they battled us tooth and nail after I called a timeout we gathered ourselves together and as Donte DiVincenzo had 4 points in the first half opened up and hit the long shots as we put the ball in his hands and he was on a shooting spree along with the rest of his teammates helped play defense we are going to put it in his (Dante's) hand the freethrows were OK I've gained a lot of confidence in Dante we don't discuss and talk about freethrows but at the start of the fourth quarter has been our quarter and this is what I reminded him and we talked about it tonight it's hard that you can shoot from the line as I give credit to our defense who did well ." "St. Georges Lamar Hamrick is an outstanding player I say one of the best ballplayers in the state as he was finding other players to pass the ball to if it wasn't for Joe McCusker give him a lot of credit for defending him." " As I was thinking back on the bus and told the kids in the locker if we are down at the half at Sanford 42-15 we have some work to do but today we improved and got better." "Brian O Neal 6'7" 250 pounder is amazing presence for us emotionally and in the huddle in a lot of ways he struggled at the line which never effected him on rebounding and defense."

Donte DiVencenzo best feelling in the world 4 in first half in the first half I got my confidence up 2h Coach Healey your the best player on the court make sure you work on your shots and be a leader on the court Lamar Hamrick is one of the best players that I have seen in St. Georges everyone has played well together we had our ups and down the relationship we have developed is the good feeling is that we won a state title with my teammates and friends."

Brian O Neal: "It's a big day for the school and for the Salesianum community coming in here in the finals there were some ballplayers that we were worried about but we did well in the end." "St. Georges is a strong, quick shooting, quick ballclub they will be good down the road and were the toughest team in Delaware that we had faced." "Lamar Hamrick is an outstanding ballplayer one of the best in the state but Donte played great he was a beast when we reached the 4th quarter we got off to a quick start and had to weather the storm they(SG) made run and we stopped their momentum this is something that we've never done before"

For St. Georges who made their first final appearance in their schools basketball history and had an amazing record of 21-4, so Lamar Hamrick led with 18 points followed by sr Darrall Mosley with 12.

Seventy Percent Shooting In Second Half Leads Men's Hoops Past Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Eric Laster scored all 19 of his team-high points in the second half, and Loyola University Maryland shot 70 percent from the field after the break to pull away from the U.S. Military Academy for a 77-71 Patriot League road win at Christl Arena.

Laster played just four minutes in the first half, but he made 9-of-15 shots in the second including a key basket in the final minute to help reserve the victory.

Franz Rassman added a career-high 18 points, and Andre Walker scored 12 before fouling out. The Greyhounds (9-12 overall, 5-5 Patriot League) used a large rebounding advantage for the second game in a row, as well, to their advantage. Loyola grabbed 41 rebounds to Army's 26.

The Greyhounds turned 13 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points, and they held the Black Knights (14-7, 5-5) to just five boards on the offensive glass.

Cam Gregory had a team-best seven rebounds for the Greyhounds, leading five players with five or more rebounds. Rassman and Denzel Brito each had six, and Chancellor Barnard and Nick Gorski both grabbed five.

Army led 32-29 at halftime, but two baskets by Rassman in the second half's first 95 seconds pulled the Greyhounds ahead by one, a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game.

Andre Walker put Loyola up six, 40-34, on a fast-break layup with 15:40 left in regulation, but a traditional 3-point play by Army's Dylon Cox at 13:19 trimmed the advantage to 44-43.

Walker broke down the defense on Loyola's next possession, feeding Rassman on the opposite block for a layup, sparking an 11-0 Greyhounds run that saw Walker score four and Laster three before Tyler Hubbard knocked down a three with 9:32 on the clock.

Larry Toomey momentarily broke the Loyola run with two free throws 16 seconds later before a Laster layup and a Walker three with the shot-clock under five gave Loyola a 15-point advantage, 60-45.

Army slowly chipped away at the Loyola lead, however, aided by making 9-of-11 shots from the free-throw line over the ensuing five minutes.

A Kyle Wilson three, one of his six in the game, cut the Greyhounds' lead to two, 70-68, with 2:45 left in the game, but Rassman grabbed an offensive rebound, and Laster scored in the paint with 92 seconds remaining to make it a two-possession game.

Wilson, however, responded with a three at 1:24, and Loyola's lead was just one, 72-71.

On its next possession, the shot clock wound under five, and Laster appeared to lose the handle on the ball at the top of the perimeter, but he regained control and hit a fading 20-foot jumper with 39.3 seconds left in regulation.

This time, however, Wilson's three misfired, and Brito came down with the rebound. He was fouled with 20.9 seconds left, but he missed the front end of one-and-one.

Army came down with the rebound, and Wilson drove the baseline from the left side, but his reverse layup was well defended and went wide. Rassman grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made both ends of one-and-one at the line to give the Greyhounds a five-point cushion with 9.4 seconds left.

Dylan Cox missed an off-balance jumper for Army, and Rassman closed the game with one out of two at the line after grabbing the rebound and drawing a foul.

Wilson matched Laster for game-high honors with 19 points, and Plomb added 13, but they were the only Black Knights in double figures.

The Greyhounds made a season-high 30 field goals in the game and shot a season-best 50.8 percent from the field.

Loyola continues its Patriot League road trip Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. game at American University in Washington, D.C.
