NTL College Lacrosse DE HS B and G Lax Reports

Re: National College News DE HS Lax

Durham, NH ? Senior midfielder Emily von Hollen led Hofstra with two goals, but New Hampshire jumped out to an early lead en route to a 9-5 victory over the Pride on Saturday afternoon at Bremner Field.

It marked the season opener for both teams as Hofstra falls to 0-1 and New Hampshire moves to 1-0 this season.

Hofstra got on the board first in the contest as von Hollen scored the Pride's first goal of the season just 28 seconds into the game off a free position shot to give the visitors the early advantage.

New Hampshire would immediately answer and hold Hofstra scoreless the remainder of the opening stanza, while scoring four goals of their own to lead 4-1 at the break. Four different players scored during the 4-0 run for UNH, including Marissa Gurello with 36 left before halftime to push the lead to three goals.

Hofstra would come out of the intermission with some renewed energy as the Pride scored three of the first five goals in the second half to close the gap to 6-4 with 8:20 left in regulation. The Pride got goals during the run from senior midfielder Tiana Parrella.

That would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as the Wildcats would push their lead to five goals with a 3-0 run that culminated with a goal from Brooke McGillis at the 5:34 mark. Von Hollen would close the scoring in the game with 3:17 to play but Hofstra would be unable to mount an additional comeback.

Junior defender April Iannetta each had a pair of draw controls. Gregerson, who had seven saves, also had a team-best three caused turnovers.

Laura Puccia led New Hampshire with three goals, while Molly Gaffey and Kayleigh Hinkle each tallied a goal and an assist. Taylor Hurwitz had eight saves for the Wildcats and also picked up two ground balls.

Hofstra returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Fairfield for a 3 p.m. contest.

No. 5 Notre Dame Cruises To 19-7 Season-Opening Win At Jacksonville

Fighting Irish use 13 different goal scorers in the victory.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? Clearly the cold South Bend winter has not affected the University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team as the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish were red-hot in Sunday's 19-7 season-opening victory over Jacksonville in the Moe's Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic at EverBank Field.

Notre Dame (1-0) used 13 different goal scorers en route to the program's 12th straight victory in a season opener. Leading the way was sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh, who posted three goals and three assists. Fellow attackman Conor Doyle, a junior, joined Kavanagh with a hat trick.

"The nice part about tonight is that it wasn't just one thing that was working. We had a lot of different guys contributing and that makes you hard to play against," Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. "We have a lot of guys and I don't know if we have to play in a way where we have to rely on any one guy. The biggest point of emphasis for us has been off-ball and how we're moving and what kind of things we're creating for each other. I thought we did a really good job of that.

"We had a great energy level. We got a lot out of rides, I thought we rode really hard and well. We also got some ground balls."

The 19 goals were the most for the Fighting Irish since a 19-7 win over Dartmouth on Feb. 28, 2009. That game also was the last time the Irish netted eight goals in a quarter until tonight's first-period explosion.

Kavanagh picked up where he left off from last season's 32-goal campaign when he scored the game's first goal less than four minutes into the action. Sophomore attackman Eddy Lubowicki made it 2-0 with a man-up deposit, which was the first goal of his career. Doyle gave the Irish a three-goal cushion by the 8:58 mark of the first quarter.

Jacksonville (0-2) entered the scoring column on a Duncan Clancy goal with 7:25 remaining in the opening period, but the Fighting Irish responded with five consecutive goals to end the quarter. Those tallies came from (in order) Liam O'Connor, Will Corrigan, Kavanagh, Jim Marlatt and Nick Ossello. Notre Dame led 8-1 at the end of the first period.

Back-to-back scores from the Dolphins sliced the Irish lead to five (8-3) by the midway point of the second quarter. Notre Dame's response this time was a 4-0 run to end the half. The surge started on a Kyle Runyon tally and a John Scioscia goal was sandwiched between two man-up deposits from freshman midfielder Sergio Perkovic. Notre Dame was 3-for-3 in man-up chances on the night.

"We were moving the ball and hitting guys who were open," Kavanagh said. "A couple of my assists were easy because they were step-downs for Sergio (Perkovic) on the man-up. We just stuck to the game plan.

"It was good to come down here and play outside since we've been practicing indoors for the past couple of months. This a great venue and I'm glad we started out hot and got the win."

Jacksonville scored first in the second half, but Notre Dame answered with four more unanswered goals to register a 16-4 lead by the end of the third quarter. The first two scores of the run came from Doyle, while Trevor Brosco and Kavanagh put home the final two. It was the first career goal for Brosco, a sophomore midfielder.

Notre Dame received fourth-quarter goals from Pat Cotter, freshman midfielder Robert Collins and Lubowicki. Cotter, a graduate student midfielder, missed all of last season with an injury.

Junior goalie Conor Kelly made his first career start for the Irish and made four saves, while allowing four goals in 45 minutes between the pipes. Freshman Shane Doss played the final quarter and made one save and surrendered three goals. DeLuca made 14 stops for Jacksonville.

The Fighting Irish held a commanding 56-18 advantage in shots along with scooping up 26 more ground balls than the Dolphins (48-22). Notre Dame owned the faceoff X, winning 23 of the 30 attempts. O'Connor was 19-of-25, while Ossello was 3-of-3 and freshman P.J. Finley was 1-of-2.

Notre Dame opens the home portion of its 2014 slate on Saturday against No. 7 Penn State. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. (ET) at Arlotta Stadium.

Philadelphia, Pa. ? Mark Cockerton's scored his second goal of the game with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation to give No. 7 Virginia an 11-10 win at Vidas Field. It was the third straight time the Cavaliers (3-0) have beaten the Dragons (0-1) by just one goal. Nick Trizano and Cole Shafer each scored four times for the Dragons.

The Dragons, playing in their season-opener trailed by as many as four goals in the second half before mounting a comeback. Trizano scored an unassisted goal with 2:24 left in the third making it 9-6. Just over a minute later, Mason Pynn set up Shafer for his second of the game cutting the lead to two. Shafer wasn't done for the day. The freshman scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, the latter on a feed from T.J. Foley, to even the contest at 9-9 with 8:49 to play. Both goalkeepers kept their teams in the game in the fourth period. Matt Barrett made four fourth quarter saves for Virginia, while Cal Winkleman turned aside five shots for the Dragons. Cockerton put Virginia up 10-9 with 2:56 to play with an unassisted tally, but again Drexel would answer. This time, Hank Brown fed Trizano as he came from behind the net, and the senior scored his fourth goal of the game to tie it with 1:57 remaining.

Drexel had possession but turned the ball over in the final minute, setting the stage for Cockerton's game-winner. On the play, Drexel's Ben McIntosh was whistled for a trip, so the Dragons would face-off with a man-down. Nick Saputo won the draw and raced towards the cage. His bounce shot was saved by Barrett with six seconds remaining. The clock stopped with just three seconds left as Virginia was penalized, but the Dragons were unable to get a shot before time expired as the Cavaliers defeated Drexel for the seventh straight time.

Drexel led 5-3 early in the second quarter, but Virginia closed the half with three straight goals to take a 6-5 lead at intermission. James Pannell scored at the 5:02 mark and then tied it up with 1:45 with an unassisted goal that he fired over Will Gabrielsen's shoulder from seven yards out. Owen Van Arsdale set up Rob Emery with :17 left in the first half to close the first half scoring.

The Cavaliers extended their run to six straight goals with the first three scores of the third period. Pat Harberson, Greg Coholan and Ryan Tucker gave the Cavaliers a seemingly safe 9-5 cushion.

Saputo was outstanding all day for Coach Voelker's squad. The junior won 19 of his 25 face-off attempts and tied a career-high with 15 ground balls. Trizano finished with a game-high five points. Will Gabrielsen made five saves in the first half before Winkleman entered the game to start the second half. The sophomore finished with eight saves. Drexel committed 19 turnovers, including six in the fourth quarter.

Van Arsdale and Cockerton each finished with two goals and two assists. Emery also had two goals for Virginia, which has now won each of its first three games by one goal. Barrett recorded a career-best 16 saves.

The Dragons return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Albany to face the high-powered Great Danes.

Loyola Greyhounds vs. Towson Tigers

Wednesday, February 19, 2014 | 3:00 p.m.

Baltimore, Md. | Ridley Athletic Complex

Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

Loyola University Maryland takes on its most-played opponent on Wednesday, February 19, when it hosts Towson University at 3 p.m.

The game marks the start of the Greyhounds' fifth season at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Loyola and Towson will face each other for the 56th time in series history.

The Greyhounds, dating to last season, have played three-straight overtime games (at Duke in 2012 NCAA Tournament, at Virginia and at Penn State).

Through two games, 10 players have scored at least one goal for Loyola this season with seven of them tallying two or more. Of those goal scorers, only two of the 10 (Justin Ward and Nikko Pontrello) entered the year with more than five career goals.

Nikko Pontrello and Tyler Albrecht lead Loyola with five goals each through two games this year. Both scored two in the opener and then had hat tricks at Penn State.

Justin Ward has five points on the season, with a goal and four assists, tying him for second on the team with Albrecht and Brian Schultz. He is now fifth in school D-I history in assists (71).

Last Time Out

The Greyhounds needed 19 seconds of overtime on Saturday to wrap up their first win of the season, as Nikko Pontrello sealed an 12-11 victory over then-No. 9 Penn State with a goal moments into extra time.

Pontrello finished with three goals and two assists, one of three Greyhounds to record hat tricks. His was the fourth three-or-more goal game of his career, while Tyler Albrecht and Jeff Chase both recorded their first.

Jack Runkel made 12 saves, five during the fourth quarter when Penn State reeled off 13 shots, in goal.

Loyola took an 11-7 lead on Pontrello's second goal of the game 2:50 into the fourth quarter, but the Nittany Lions scored four unanswered to tie the game at 11-11 on an Erik Myers tally with 63 seconds left in regulation.

Brendan Donovan won the ensuing faceoff for the Greyhounds, but a shot by Justin Ward just before the buzzer went wide, sending the contest to overtime.

In the extra frame, Graham Savio won the faceoff for Loyola after a loose-ball push on the Nittany Lions. Pontrello dodged his way to the crease and finished the shot for his third goal.

Follow The Action

Wednesday's game, and all non-televised home games, will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network. Many of Loyola's road conference games will also be available on the free HD network.

Log on to LoyolaGreyhounds.com/pln or PatriotLeague.tv to watch the home games on your computer, web-enabled televisions and most mobile devices.

In The Polls

Following the Greyhounds' win at Penn State and an overtime loss at Virginia to start the year, Loyola moved up to ninth in the USILA Coaches' Poll and 10th in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse rankings.

Series History

The Loyola-Towson rivalry is the most played series in the history of men's lacrosse at both schools. Wednesday's game will be the 56th all-time meeting between the teams, dating back to 1959, the first year of intercollegiate lacrosse at Towson.

Of Loyola's opponents, only Towson (55), Johns Hopkins (51) and Penn State (51) have played the Greyhounds 50 or more times.

With its sixth-straight victory in the series, dating back to 2008, Loyola took a one-game lead in the all-time series record at 28-27 with a 14-9 victory on February 20, 2013 at Towson.

In last year's game, Mike Sawyer scored four goals for the second year in a row against the Tigers, and Justin Ward had a four-point night with a goal and three assists. Kevin Ryan also had his first career multi-goal game with two to go with an assist. Blake Burkhart won 17-of-28 faceoffs for the Greyhounds.

New Year, New League

Loyola officially became a member of the 10-school Patriot League on July 1, 2013, less than a year after announcing it would join the conference in August 2012. The Greyhounds joined the League along with Boston University, increasing the full-time membership to 10.

The Greyhounds will compete in men's lacrosse with Boston University, Bucknell University, Colgate University, College of the Holy Cross, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy. American University is also a full member of the League, but the school does not sponsor men's lacrosse.

On The Tube

Loyola men's lacrosse will make a minimum of four appearances on national television this year as part of the Patriot League's agreement with CBS Sports Network.

The Greyhounds will host Duke University on Sunday, March 9, in a match-up of the last two NCAA Champions, and CBS will then feature the Greyhounds' Thursday, April 17, game against Bucknell University, the top two teams in the Preseason Patriot League poll. The network will also feature two long-time rivals when Loyola hosts Johns Hopkins University, on Saturday, May 3.

Additionally, the Loyola-Georgetown game on Wednesday, March 19, in Washington, D.C., was added to the CBS Sports Network slate.

Both semifinal games in the Patriot League Championships will be broadcast on Friday, April 25, and the Patriot League Championship Game will also air live on Sunday, April 27.

Preseason Prognostications

As a first-year member of the Patriot League, Loyola was picked to win the conference title in a poll of the League's coaches and sports information contacts. The Greyhounds drew 13 of the possible 16 first-place votes (schools are not allowed to vote for themselves) and edged Bucknell for first.

Loyola and Bucknell were followed (in order) by Lehigh, Army, Colgate, Navy, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Boston U.

Joe Fletcher was named the Preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, and he earned a spot with teammate Justin Ward on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

Fletch, White And Blue

Senior defender Joe Fletcher was the long current collegiate player selected as part of one of 52 players who made up the United States Men's National Team training roster this fall, and the day before Loyola's season-opener, he found out he is one of 30 players who made the cut for the team that will compete at the 2014 World Cup in Denver.

Fletcher trained with Team USA throughout the fall, playing in two training weekends, the Play For Parkinson's event in October and the Champion Challenge last month. He was one of seven defenders to make the 30-man roster.

In The Nikko Of Time

Nikko Pontrello tallied his fourth career hat trick last Saturday, and first of the season, scoring 19 seconds into overtime to lift the Greyhounds to a 12-11 victory at then-No. 9 Penn State. He also added a pair of assists versus the Nittany Lions that were initially misatributed to Justin Ward.

The junior attacker is tied for the team lead with five goals this season after finishing his sophomore campaign with 16, and he tops the club with eight points. Loyola improved to 4-0 in games that Pontrello records three or more goals.

Albrecht, Chase With First Three-Goal Games

Two other players also recorded hat tricks on Saturday against the Nittany Lions, but unlike NIkko Pontrello, it was the first of Tyler Albrecht and Jeff Chase's careers.

Albrecht is tied with Pontrello for the team lead with five goals after scoring twice in the opener at Virginia, while Chase's goals were the first three of his career.

Albrecht scored one goal in each of the first three quarters, while Chase tallied his first on an extra-man possession in the first before recording back-to-back goals in the third quarter.

Possession Battle

Much like Graham Savio did at the faceoff 'X' in the season-opener at Virginia, Brendan Donovan gave the Greyhounds a spark in the second half on restarts. The senior from nearby Loyola Blakefield High School won four of the seven he took, including drawing one to himself with just over a minute to go after the Nittany Lions had tied the game at 11-11.

Stopping Shots

Jack Runkel posted 12 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, of the win against Penn State after making just three stops in the season-opener against Virginia.

The senior goalkeeper, who earned 2012 NCAA Championships All-Tournament honors, made five of the saves in the fourth quarter as Penn State took 13 shots.

Quarterbacking The Offense

Justin Ward returns for his third year as a starter on attack for the Greyhounds and will once again serve as Loyola's quarterback from 'X'. Last season, Ward earned USILA All-America Honorable Mention after finishing tops on the team in points (62) and assists (35) and second in goals (27). His 62 points ranked tied for fifth in school single-season Division I history, and his 35 assists check in at third on that list.

With two assists, one off his career-high, last Saturday at Penn State, Ward moved into fifth-place in Loyola's Division I history with 71. He trails Mike Ruland in fourth place by five. Ward also is tied with Gavin Prout for 20th in school Division I history with 111 career points.

Dennis Grabs Patriot League Honor

Romar Dennis was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday after scoring a pair of goals in his first collegiate game at Virginia. Dennis tallied one in the first quarter and one in the fourth that tied the game at 12-12.

Fresh Faces

Three Loyola players scored their first collegiate goals in the first quarter of the Greyhounds' game at Virginia. Brian Sherlock, Tyler Albrecht and Romar Dennis all tallied the first of their careers as Loyola worked to a 4-4 tie after 15 minutes.

Of the eight players who scored for Loyola, six of them entered the game with four or fewer career goals. Justin Ward and Nikko Pontrello were the only two with more than four.

In addition to Albrecht and Dennis, Jack Carrigan (defense), Ryan Fournier (rope unit) and Graham Savio (face-off) all made their Loyola and collegiate debuts.

Four players ? Albrecht, David Manning (defense), Brian Schultz (attack) and Sherlock ? all made their first career starts.

Rutgers Men's Lacrosse Defeats Wagner, 20-5

Five Scarlet Knights posted multi-goal games

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 18, 2014) ? Five players had multi-goal games as the Rutgers men's lacrosse team (2-0) defeated Wagner (0-1), 20-5, in Staten, Island, N.Y., Tuesday. Fifteen RU players notched at least one point in the game, while 10 scored at least one goal.

The Scarlet Knights held a 46-40 advantage in shots, while securing 35 ground balls to the Seahawks' 23. Junior FO Joe Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) won 17-of-20 face-offs (.850 percent) and paced RU with six ground balls. Redshirt senior A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) paced Rutgers with four goals. Sophomore GK Kris Alleyne (New City, N.Y.) had a game-high 12 saves.

Rutgers jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first four goals of the contest in the first 4:03 of the opening quarter, which included two goals from Klimchak and two assists by Nardella. Just six seconds in the first period, Nardella won the opening face-off and found freshman A Christian Trasolini (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), who put it in the back of the net. Klimchak added one more goal in the quarter, again with the help of Nardella, and the Scarlet Knights led 6-1 after the first.

RU came out firing again in the second, scoring six of the first seven goals of the period to take a 12-2 lead with 9:00 to go in the half. Klimchak started off the run by scoring his fourth goal before freshman A Connor Murphy (Clifton, Va.) tallied back-to-back RU scores.

After a Wagner score, the Scarlet Knights posted the final two goals of the half and took a 14-3 advantage into the break. Along with Klimchak's four goals, junior M Brian Goss (Arlington, Va.), Murphy, junior M Rich Rambo (Abington, Pa.) and Trasolini each posted two first-half goals.

Trasolini started RU off with 14:33 to go in the third quarter, giving himself a hat trick. The Seahawks answered with two goals, cutting the Scarlet Knights' lead to 15-5 with 5:06 on the clock in the third period.

It wouldn't be enough, as Rutgers tallied the final five goals of the game to pick up the victory. In the 5-0 run to end the game, Murphy and Goss each secured hat tricks by their third goals of the contest.

Rutgers is back in action at Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m.

All-Around Performance For Men's Lacrosse In 20-4 Win Over Towson

BALTIMORE ? Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse scored the game's first 10 goals, and the Greyhounds turned in an effort that was solid at all positions in a 20-4 Wednesday afternoon victory over Towson University at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Nikko Pontrello scored four goals to lead 11 Loyola players who tallied goals in the victory.

Loyola (2-1 overall) took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a .750 shooting percentage and Blake Burkhart winning 7-of-9 faceoffs.

The Greyhounds held Towson (1-2) to just five shots in the quarter, three that were saved by goalkeeper Jack Runkel and two that were off cage. Runkel finished with seven saves in just over 54 minutes of action, a span in which he yielded just two goals.

Tyler Albrecht, who finished with three goals for the second game in a row, opened the scoring off a quick restart following a Towson turnover. Justin Ward, who scored a pair of goals and assisted on three more, found a crashing Albrecht who went high-to-low for the game's first score.

Pontrello then tallied his first at 10:26 after rolling the crease and whipping a sidearm shot into the net. It only took seven seconds for the next Greyhounds' goal. Burkhart won the faceoff to Brian Sherlock who went unmarked into the box and tallied his first of two goals.

Ward added his first goal at 9:03 when a dodge from 'X' and shot over the shoulder of Towson goalkeeper Tyler White. Albrecht made it 5-0 in the Greyhounds favor at 8:17 with a sidearm shot off a Sherlock pass. Ward scored his second in a span of less than three minutes with a redodge on the left side.

Sherlock was involved in his third goal at 4:34 when he dodged and sent the ball to Matt Sawyer who hit a shot form 12 yards out, making Loyola's lead 7-0 with 4:34 to play in the first quarter.

Towson went on a clearing attempt late in the first, but Zack Sirico caused a turnover on the ride. Pontrello picked up the ground ball and scored with 1:39 left in the stanza.

Albrecht caused a turnover, picked up a ground ball and got the outlet pass to Sirico who fed Pat Laconi for a goal with seven-tenths of a second left in the first. The assist was the first of Sirico's career.

Laconi scored again 1:38 into the second quarter when he caused a turnover and scored off a Ward assist, making Loyola's lead 10-0.

Towson scored its first with 11:41 left in the second quarter when Greg Cuccinello hit from 10 yards out into the midfield, but Loyola scored seven in row after that, stretching its lead to 17-1 with 11:50 left in the fourth quarter.

During that run, Kevin Ryan scored twice, Ryan Fournier tallied his first collegiate goal, Pontrello scored twice, Brian Schultz added one and Sherlock found the net for the second time.

Chris Vetter broke Towson's 30-plus minute scoreless stretch with a goal off a Ryan Drenner assist 10:44 before the final horn.

Albrecht scored his third, again in transition, and Matt Cunningham tallied his first career goal off Ryan O'Sullivan's first assist with 4:03 left. Ryan Drenner and Joe Seider scored for Towson within 21 seconds of each other, and Mike Perkins' first career goal ended the scoring for Loyola.

The Greyhounds finished with a 16 ground ball advantage, 36-20, with Albrecht's five leading the way. Laconi, Pontrello, Runkel and Joe Fletcher all had three for Loyola.

Towson committed 18 turnovers, 13 that were caused by the Greyhounds. Laconi and Sirico each caused three, and Fletcher dislodged two.

Burkhart finished 10-of-14 at the faceoff 'X' for the Greyhounds, and Loyola outshot the Tigers, 41-26.

Loyola plays its first-ever Patriot League game on Saturday, February 22, in Worcester, Mass., where it will take on College of the Holy Cross at 1 p.m. The game will air live on PatriotLeague.tv.

Dominant First Half Sparks Terps to Win vs. BU

Cummings, Griffin post four goals each to lead Maryland to 18-8 win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? The No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team utilized a ferocious first half to mount an eight-goal lead en route to an 18-8 decision against Boston University Wednesday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

The Terps (3-0) were paced in scoring by Brooke Griffin and Taylor Cummings, who each posted four goals. It was a breakout performance for Griffin in 2014, who posted three points in two games prior, while Cummings racked up her third consecutive four-goal showing to begin the season.

Kelly McPartland added a hat trick and Beth Glaros recorded two scores. Maryland picked up additional scoring with one goal apiece from Morgan Torggler, Zoe Stukenberg, Kristen Lamon, Taylor Salandra, and Erin Collins.

Maryland racked up a decisive 25-7 shot advantage and helped force Boston University (0-2) into 11 turnovers in the first stanza. The Terps scored the first three goals of the match, including a pair from Griffin, before BU landed on the scoreboard at 25:40.

McPartland kicked off and capped a punishing 8-0 run with a goal at 22:47 and another at 6:30. The Terps' dynamic attack was on full display in the series with scores coming from six different players including Collins, Lamon, Cummings, Griffin and Stukenberg.

BU posted two late goals in the period to cut the Terps' lead to 11-3 heading into the half but a determined Maryland unit erupted for two tallies in the first 24 seconds of the second period to get the clock running for the remainder of the contest. Maryland stretched the run to six unanswered goals with four additional scores in the first 10 minutes of the half before BU's Kelsey Marafioti stopped the run at 17:21.

Following an unassisted score by Torggler at 16:20, the Terriers closed the game with four goals for an 18-8 final. It was Maryland's third win by 10 or more goals in as many tries in 2014.

The Terps used a 21-7 advantage on the draw to post their highest scoring output of the year. Cummings posted a game-high five draw controls. Freshman Nadine Hadnagy recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Alice Mercer tallied three caused turnovers to pace the defense.

"I thought we really came out strong to start the game and I was really pleased at how we were connecting offensively," head coach Cathy Reese said. "I thought we worked the ball well through the midfield and our transition was great, especially in the beginning of the game. We didn't finish as well as we started but we just need to put together that full 60 minutes."

Maryland will face its first top-ten ranked opponent Saturday when it travels to future Big Ten foe No. 7 Penn State for a 3 p.m. contest.

Re: National College News DE HS Lax

Hempstead, N.Y. ? Hofstra junior attacker Sam Lenox scored with 14 seconds left to break a tie as the Pride posted an 8-7 win over Fairfield in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Junior attacker Brittain Altomare notched a hat trick with three goals and two assists and five other Hofstra players contributed goals to help Hofstra even its record at 1-1. Fairfield's Colleen Reynolds scored two goals but the Stags fell to 0-1.

Fairfield erased a 7-4 deficit with three straight goals in the final 6:13. Melanie Raso scored the tying goal with 39 seconds left and Fairfield won the draw control. But Lenox notched her first goal of the game and the second of the season when Stags goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras came out of net to play the ball and lost control. Lenox fired a low shot at the vacant goal mouth before Sidaras could run back into position to give Hofstra the late win.

The game, which was originally scheduled to be played at Fairfield, marked the first game for the season on the Pride's home turf. Hofstra improved to 8-4 in its last 12 home openers

Sophomore attacker Kelsey Gregersonmade seven saves, including three in the second half.

Senior midfielders Emily von Hollen, who accomplished the feat in the season opener at New Hampshire last weekend.

Five different goal scorers helped the Pride take a 5-2 halftime lead as Hofstra built a 15-9 shot advantage.

Considine opened the scoring just 35 seconds in with an unassisted strike. Hofstra scored the first game's first three goals with Ward and Mezzanotte both capitalizing on Altomare feeds for close-range goals through the game's first 16 minutes.

Jenna Slowey put Fairfield on the board and Colleen Reynolds scored 31 seconds later to make it a one-goal game. But the Pride ended the half with momentum as Altomare and Lindsay McKinnon each scored their first goals of the season. Gregerson made four saves in the half to help her team take a three-goal edge into the break.

Altomare extended Hofstra's run to 4-0 with a goal just 1:12 into the second half. Jamie Leone and Julieanne Mascera scored back-to-back goals before Altomare teamed with Considine for the hat trick with 7:36 left. That goal, which made it 7-4, would be crucial as Reynolds, Addie Reilly and Raso all scored to tie it before Lenox's heroics put the Pride on top.

Hofstra will be back on the road on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Pride faces Colgate.

While Marquette was warming up, Hofstra went cold, going on a 29-minute scoring drought from which they never recovered.

The Golden Eagles scooped up 36 ground balls to the Pride's 28 while Hofstra took 37 shots to Marquette's 30. Face-offs were even at 12, each team cleared all but two of their attempts and Hofstra junior goalie Chris Selva made seven stops while Marquette's JJ Sagl made eight.

Fletcher, Ward Named Candidates For Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. ? For the second year in a row, two Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse seniors have been named candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor that recognizes seniors who excel both on and off the field.

Team co-captains Joe Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee H.S.) and Justin Ward (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill H.S.) are two of the 20 who were tabbed as candidates. Last year, Scott Ratliff and Davis Butts earned the nods, and Ratliff was a finalist for the honor.

Loyola is the only school nationally with two players named to the list of 20. Including Fletcher and Ward, four Patriot League players are on the rolls (Bucknell University's Todd Heritage and Lehigh University's Ty Souders).

"We are proud to have two of our great leaders be candidates for this prestigious award," Loyola Head Coach Charley Toomey said. "They exhibit the Jesuit ideal of being 'Men For Others,' and they are examples for us on and off the field."

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence ? community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Both Fletcher and Ward were named Preseason All-Americans by Face-Off Yearbook ? Fletcher to the first team and Ward the second ? and the duo has helped Loyola to a 2-1 start this season. Both have excelled in the classroom as members of Loyola's Sellinger School of Business where Fletcher is an accounting major and Ward a finance major.

Fletcher is a two-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American, earning honorable mention as a sophomore in 2012 and first team laurels last season. Earlier this month, he was named to the U.S. Men's Lacrosse National Team 30-man roster that is preparing for the 2014 World Championships in Denver this summer. He was the only collegiate player on the 52-man training roster and is also the only current collegian on the 30-man.

Through three games this year, Fletcher has tallied nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers for the Greyhounds. On Wednesday, he had primary marking responsibility for Towson University's preseason All-American Thomas DeNapoli. Fletcher and the Greyhounds held DeNapoli without a point, snapping his 21-game streak of at least one point.

Off the field, Fletcher is one of the most involved students on the Loyola campus. He is co-president of the Greyhounds' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a member of Loyola's Green & Grey Society ? a group of 14 students that serves as a liaison to the school's president, cabinet and board of trustees ? and he has volunteered his time with many service projects throughout the campus.

Ward earned All-America Honorable Mention as a junior last season after quarterbacking a Greyhounds' offense that averaged nearly 12 goals per game. The attacker finished 11th in Division I in assists per game (2.19) and 19th in points per game (3.88), culminating the season with 27 goals and 35 assists for 62 points.

His 35 assists ranked third on Loyola's single-season chart at the Division I level, and his 62 points were tied for fifth. He has scored three goals and assisted on six more through three games this season, bringing his career totals to 42 and 74 for 116 career points. He is fifth in school Division I history in career assists and 19th in points.

Ward is also a member of Loyola's SAAC and serves as the group's Director of Media. With Fletcher, he is participating in the Loyola Leadership Academy with Janssen Sports Leadership. Ward has participated in community outreach with Loyola's York Road Initiative and is a volunteer with the homeless shelter at his family's church, Glen Burnie United Methodist Church.

The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Baltimore May 24-26.

Loyola Greyhounds at Holy Cross Crusaders

Saturday, February 22, 2014 | 1:00 p.m.

Worcester, Mass. | Holy Cross Field

Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse makes its Patriot League debut on Saturday, February 22, when it travels to Worcester, Mass., for a 1 o'clock game at College of the Holy Cross.

The Greyhounds had played three-straight overtime games, dating to last season's NCAA Tournament, but they snapped that streak in a big way Wednesday, defeating Towson, 20-4.

Wednesday was the second time in as many years that Loyola had scored 20 or more goals in a game. Last year, the Greyhounds beat UMBC, 21-9, at Ridley.

Loyola's 16-goal margin of victory was the largest by a Greyhounds team since Loyola defeated Fairfield University, 19-2, on April 21, 2007. It was the largest margin of victory for a game at Ridley Athletic Complex, and behind the Fairfield game, it was the second largest during the nine-year tenure of Charley Toomey as Loyola's head coach.

Eleven players scored goals for Loyola against Towson, six of them had two or more, three had goals and assists, and three others had assists.

Nikko Pontrello maintained his team-lead in points (13) with a four-goal, one-assist performance.

Last Time Out

After playing two overtime games to start the season, Loyola dispelled the notion of needing extra time for its third game, scoring nine goals in the first quarter, and 10-straight overall, in a 20-4 win over Towson University on Wednesday at RIdley Athletic Complex.

The Greyhounds took a 10-0 lead on Pat Laconi's second-consecutive goal 1:38 into the second quarter, and after Towson got on the board at 11:41, Loyola reeled off a 7-0 run that gave it a 17-1 advantage on Nikko Pontrello's fourth of the game with 11:50 to play in the final quarter.

The Greyhounds' defense, led by eight Jack Runkel saves, held the Tigers scoreless for stretches of 16:38 and 30:57 in the game.

Loyola shot .750 in the first quarter, scoring on 9-of-12 shots, and .488 (20-of-41) in the game.

Blake Burkhart won 10-of-14 faceoffs for Loyola, all in the first half of the game.

When Towson did gain possession, Loyola had 16 caused turnovers, three each by Pat Laconi and Zack Sirico.

Five players had their first collegiate points in the game.

Follow The Action

Saturday's game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network. All of Loyola's non-televised home games, and Many of the Greyhounds' road conference games will also be available on the free HD network.

Log on to LoyolaGreyhounds.com or PatriotLeague.tv to watch the home games on your computer, web-enabled televisions and most mobile devices.

In The Polls

Following the Greyhounds' win at Penn State and an overtime loss at Virginia to start the year, Loyola moved up to ninth in the USILA Coaches' Poll and 10th in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse rankings.

Series History

Loyola and Holy Cross will meet for the first time on the lacrosse field when the teams take the field Saturday.

The Greyhounds are 14-6 all-time against teams from their new conference, having played Army, Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy in the past. Other than a series with Navy in 2010-2011, Loyola last played a Patriot League team in 1998 when it took on Lehigh.

Starting Off Strong

Loyola needed just 12 shots to score nine goals in the first quarter of Wednesday's game against Towson, and the Greyhounds scored on nine of their 11 possessions in the quarter.

Meanwhile, the defense limited Towson to five shots, four of which were saved by goalkeeper Jack Runkel. Loyola forced four Towson turnovers, and Blake Burkhart won 7-of-9 faceoffs in the opening frame. Six different players scored in the first quarter for Loyola.

Burkhart On Restarts

After going just 2-of-10 on faceoffs in the Greyhounds first two games of the season, Blake Burkhart turned in a dominating performance on Wednesday against Towson. He finished 10-of-14 at the 'X', winning 7-of-9 in the first quarter as Loyola jumped out to a 9-0 lead.

Pontrello Putting Up Points

Nikko Pontrello had his third multi-goal game is as many contests to open the season on Wednesday when he matched his career-high with four goals against Towson. The junior attacker scored twice in the opener against Virginia, and he then recorded three versus Penn State. His final goal against the Nittany Lions came 19 seconds into overtime and lifted Loyola to a 12-11 win.

Pontrello leads the Greyhounds with 13 points through three games with nine goals and four assists. He is closing in on his goal total from last year when he finished his sophomore campaign with 16.

In his career, Loyola is now 5-0 in games that he scored three or more goals.

Tyler's Time

As a freshman in 2013, Tyler Albrecht saw limited action for the Greyhounds, mostly coming off the wings on faceoffs and occasional offensive midfield shifts. His role has changed dramatically in his second season, and the Canadian midfielder is making the most of it.

Albrecht is a starter on Loyola's first midfield with Matt Sawyer and Brian Sherlock, and he has three multi-goal games in as many outings this year. Albrecht scored twice in the season-opener at Virginia, and he has recorded hat tricks with three each against Penn State and Towson. He is second on the team with eight goals, one behind Nikko Pontrello, the team leader.

In addition to his offensive work, Albrecht has continued to be a two-way middie, playing on the wings for faceoffs and defensive shifts. He had five ground balls and two caused turnovers against Towson.

In three games this year, Fletcher has nine ground balls and a team-high seven caused turnovers. He now has 120 ground balls and 52 caused turnovers during his career.

Runkel then directed the Loyola to a dominating performance against Towson. He made four saves in the first quarter and allowed just two goals over more than 54 minutes of action, stopping a total of eight shots.

With two assists in each of the last two games, Ward has moved into fifth-place in Loyola's Division I history with 73. He trails Mike Ruland in fourth place by three. Ward is now tied with his former teammate, and future Charlotte Hounds teammate, Eric Lusby for 19th in career points with 115.

Not Just Defensive Midfield

Good transition play has been a key to Loyola's success in recent years, and the dynamic has continued this year through three games. Five of the Greyhounds' first 10 goals Wednesday came out of unsettled situations.

Pat Laconi, a preseason All-American short-stick defensive midfielder, scored a career-best two goals against the Tigers, and he also had three caused turnovers. Ryan Fournier scored his first career goal on a transition run in the third quarter.

Air Force Downs Marist, 17-9

DENVER, Colo. ? Seniors Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.) combined for 10 goals to lead the Air Force lacrosse team to a 17-9 victory over Marist Sunday in the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic, hosted by Denver.

Crampton finished with five goals and two assists against the Red Foxes, while McKee added five goals of his own, as the Falcons improved to 2-2 on the year.

Air Force opened the game with a score from McKee two minutes into the contest, followed by Crampton's first goal 30 seconds later. The Falcons' lead increased to 3-0 before Marist got on the board with a man-up goal at the 8:08 mark in the first quarter.

The remainder of the period featured an offensive flurry, with the two teams combining for eight goals in the final eight minutes of the quarter. After a goal by Crampton gave Air Force a 6-2 advantage with 2:35 on the clock, the Red Foxes responded with two quick scores to cut the margin to two goals. However, the Falcons received a pair of goals from Marcus Walker (Sr., Denver, Colo.) and Tom Burgess (Jr., Watertown, N.Y.) in the final minute of the quarter to take an 8-4 lead.

The scoring slowed down in the second quarter, with neither team getting on the board until the 2:25 mark, when Crampton tallied his third goal of the day. McKee added another score less than a minute later with a feed from Crampton to give the Falcons a 10-4 lead at the half.

Marist notched the first score of the third period to get back within five goals, but back-to-back tallies by McKee and Walker midway through the quarter helped Air Force extend its advantage. The Falcons outscored the Red Foxes 7-5 in the final two periods, as they posted their highest scoring output of the season.

Air Force won the ground ball battle against Marist, 37-27, and also held a 48-31 advantage on shots taken. Meanwhile, the Red Foxes were the winners at the face-off X, taking 18-of-30 draws, including all six in the fourth quarter.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Crampton and McKee were named to the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic all-tournament team, along with senior Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.), who finished with one goal and one assist on Sunday.

The Falcons return to action next Sunday, March 2, when they head to Lexington, Va., to take on VMI in a non-conference match-up.

Blue Devils Ease Past Stony Brook, 14-6

February 23, 2014

DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke's defense held visiting Stony Brook scoreless in the first half while senior Josh Dionne joined the 100-goal club as the No. 2 Blue Devils posted a 14-6 win on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.

The Blue Devils improve to 4-0 while the Seawolves fall to 1-2. The win pushes Duke's win streak to nine dating back to May 5, 2013.

"Offensively, I thought we moved the ball and were unselfish," said head coach John Danowski. "I think we would have liked to have gotten one or two more, but certainly going into the locker room with a seven goal lead we were happy."

Duke's Jordan Wolf, who matched his career high with seven total points on the day, scored two goals in the opening half as the Blue Devils raced to a 7-0 lead. Goalkeeper Luke Aaron, who surrendered just two goals before giving way to Justin Turri after three periods, carded eight of his career-high 11 saves in the opening 30 minutes.

Stony Brook got on the board after 31:03 and added five more as the Blue Devils only outscored the Seawolves 7-6 in the final 30 minutes.

"We are very disappointed in the second-half performance," Danowski said. "I think if you were a spectator and showed up in the second half you would have said 'Wow these are two even teams' if you didn't know the score. I think the Stony Brook kids played for a full 60 minutes and played really hard and were really competitive. I was disappointed with the way we competed in the second half."

With a pair of tallies, Dionne became the 16th player in Duke history to reach the 100-goal plateau. The group includes Wolf (130) and current Duke assistant coach Matt Danowski (170). Deemer Class, Kyle Keenan and Case Matheis added two goals each as Duke won its third game in three tries against Stony Brook.

The two goals for Keenan give the junior midfielder six for the year, which is just two shy of matching his combined total form his first two seasons. Keenan owns two goals in three of Duke's four games this season and has at least one point in all four.

The Blue Devil defensive unit was spearheaded by Casey Carroll, who logged five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Brendan Fowler (9-of-15) and Jack Rowe (6-of-8) combined for a 15-of-23 effort at the faceoff X.

"It's been really easy [settling in]," said Aaron. "It's been seamless. The guys in front of me make it easy. The defense is playing really stout and has made my job really easy."

For Stony Brook, Brody Eastwood logged three goals while Matt Schultz had one goal and two assists. In the net, Dan Shaughnessy was credited for 11 saves.

Duke opens ACC play on Saturday, March 1 by travelling to face Maryland. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m.

#2 Terps Stay Perfect with Win at Hofstra Tuesday

Cummings posts seven points to lead Maryland to 14-3 road victory

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. ? Sophomore Taylor Cummings recorded seven points as the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team moved to 5-0 in 2014 with a 14-3 victory at Hofstra Tuesday night.

Cummings, who leads the Terps with 23 points this season, recorded three goals and four assists while a staunch defensive effort held a fifth-straight opponent to eight or fewer goals. Maryland (5-0) also picked up strong offensive performances from Kelly McPartland (3g, 2a) and Jen Mendez, Zoe Stukenberg and reigning ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Brooke Griffin, who each added two goals.

Cummings put the Terps on the board first with a tally at 24:55 before a lull in scoring resulted in nearly 12 minutes of scoreless lacrosse. Hofstra knotted the game at 1-1 with 12:04 remaining the period. Maryland capped the half with three unanswered goals which the Terps would later roll into the second stanza for a 6-0 run. Two Cummings' goals sandwiched a score from McPartland in the final 10 minutes of the first half for a 4-1 cushion through 30 minutes.

Stukenberg needed all of 12 seconds to push the Terps' lead to four after the opening draw of the second half. McPartland moved that advantage to 7-1 with goals at 29:02 and 27:05. Hofstra added its second goal of the game when Becky Conto found the back of the net at the 25-minute mark to shrink Maryland's lead to five but a pair of goals from Griffin 32 seconds apart with 23 minutes remaining pushed the score to 9-2.

Lindsay McKinnon gave the Pride its third and final score of the game at 22:28. Maryland's defense kept Hofstra off the board for the remainder of the contest. Halle Majorana, Erin Collins and two scores from Mendez capped the Terrapins' offensive output.

Cummings recorded a team-high five draw controls and Collins posted four ground balls to lead the Terps. Abbey Clipp, who was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday, recorded the win in the cage with five saves.

"I thought defensively we were solid all night against a strong Hofstra team," head coach Cathy Reese said. "Offensively, we were able to come out of halftime, create a lot of opportunities and really get our attack going. This is a tough road stretch for our team and I think we are learning and growing each game while having the chance to utilize a lot of our players."

Maryland caps a three-game road trip with its conference opener at No. 6 Duke Saturday at 1 p.m.

MLAX FINAL: #20 Penn 14, Saint Joseph's 4

PHILADELPHIA - Although it has won all 10 meetings in this series, the
University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team has had trouble with its
city rival Saint Joseph's the last few years. Of particular note, the
Hawks stuck around all the way until the finish last year at Franklin
Field before the host Quakers could breathe a sigh of relief after a
one-goal victory.

On Tuesday night, again at Franklin Field, Penn and Saint Joseph's looked
like they might engage in another battle royale. That is, until the second
quarter when the 20th-ranked Quakers flexed their muscles.

After allowing three goals in the first quarter - all of them to Ryan
McGee - Penn's defense absolutely shut down the Hawks, holding them
scoreless for 37:33 of game time before finally allowing one final goal on
the night.

At the other end, the momentum was more gradual but it was sustaining.
Penn scored three times in the first two periods, then four times in the
last two, and had 12 different players tickle the twine.

It all added up to a solid, 14-4 decision.

Penn is now 1-1 on the young season, while Saint Joseph's fell to 1-2.

It took Penn all of six seconds to open the scoring on their home field
this season, as Danny Feeney cleanly won the opening faceoff and went down
to score unassisted. For the game, the Quakers were 15-of-22 on the
faceoffs, as Feeney was aided on the X by Joe McCallion and Austin Kreinz.

McGee got that goal back for SJU less than two minutes later, but one
minute after that McCallion scored unassisted to make it 2-1. McGee again
tied things, this time a mere 24 seconds later off a Mike Dougherty feed,
and then things settled down before Chris Moriarty finished a Zack Losco
feed with 4:42 left in the first quarter.

McGee's third goal of the game came with 1:11 left in the period, and made
things level entering the second quarter.

It took Penn 19 seconds in the period to gain a lead it wouldn't
relinquish, Pat Berkery finishing a feed from Isaac Bock. Two minutes
later, Bock got on the board and he netted a pass from Nick Doktor, and
then midway through the period Drew Belinsky made it 6-3 with an
unassisted goal.

The next goal didn't come until nearly five minutes were gone in the third
quarter, but it was Doktor who ended the drought off a feed from Chris
Hupfeldt. Bock scored his second shortly after that, off a Losco feed, and
then Kevin Brown (unassisted) and long-stick middie Alex Blonsky (off a
McCallion feed) scored just nine seconds apart. The third period ended
with the Quakers ahead 10-3.

Penn scored two within a 32-second span near the start of the fourth,
McCallion and then Losco going unassisted, before Dougherty finally ended
SJU's scoring skid with 7:38 left in the game (McGee assisting). Penn's
reserves got their chance late and made the most of it, Jeff Sestilio and
Will Laco scoring in the game's final 1:08.

Brian Feeney had a performance similar to Saturday at Duke; after making
just one save and allowing the three first-period goals, he had eight
stops the rest of the way and allowed just the one goal. At the other end,
Dustin Keen had five saves in the first quarter before the Quakers figured
him out. He eventually gave way to T.J. Jones.

Penn is home again on Saturday, hosting No. 6 Denver at 1 p.m. at Franklin
Field.

Re: National College News DE HS Lax

Hempstead, NY - Senior co-captain Torin Varn and freshman Brier Davis each had two goals and junior goalkeeper Chris Selva made 10 saves as Hofstra earned a 9-7 win over #17 Fairfield at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

Selva and the Pride defense held the Stags 11 goals under their offensive average (18 gpg) for their first two games. Hofstra improved to 1-2 on the season while Fairfield drops to 2-1 on the year.

The Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter following an unassisted tally from redshirt sophomore Korey Hendrickson 2:32 into the game, his fourth of the season, and a goal from Davis with 1:51 to go off a feed from junior Tyler Begley. The goal was the freshman's second of the season.

Fairfield cut the deficit in half with 48 seconds to go in the opening stanza after Drew Federico converted a pass from Jake Knostman for his third of the season. The Stags had another great chance in the closing seconds but Selva stonewalled a point-blank shot from Dave Fleming at the horn to preserve the one goal lead.

Sophomore Sam Llinares pushed the Pride lead to two, 3-1, with his sixth goal of the season at the 4:15 mark of the second quarter. But Fleming answered back for the Stags with 8:37 to play in the quarter. The goal was the freshman's third of the season. Varn made it a two-goal lead for the Pride once again at the 7:10 mark, putting home a pass from junior Mike Malave for his third tally of the season.

Following a Hofstra turnover, Tristan Sperry took a pass from Nick Guida and beat Selva up high to close to within one at 4-3, with 4:21 to play before halftime. Davis scored his second of the game, off a pass from Llinares, with 2:48 to go to give the Pride a two-goal advantage once again. Malave pushed the lead to three with his first goal of the game and third of the year with 1:20 remaining which closed out the first half scoring.

Pride senior Drew Coholan opened the second half scoring with an unassisted goal 5:42 into the third quarter to make it a 7-3 game. Hofstra freshman face-off specialist Kris Clark won the ensuing face-off and ran in on goal, bouncing a shot past Fairfield keeper Jack Murphy for his first goal of the season and an 8-3 Hofstra lead.

Federico and Varn traded goals over the next two minutes as the Pride maintained the five-goal advantage. Eric Warden scored an unassisted goal for Fairfield with 6:49 left in the quarter to cut the Pride lead to four, 9-5.

The Stags opened the fourth quarter scoring with an unassisted goal from Fleming 1:55 into the quarter. That cut their deficit to three, 9-6. Hofstra was also called for a one-minute penalty on the play, but was able to win the faceoff and control the ball to kill the penalty. On Fairfield's next possession, Fleming hit the post with a close shot before the Stags went on the extra-man once again. Hofstra once again killed the penalty, its third successful kill in as many chances. But the Stags would score again with both teams at even strength as Warden put a shot past Selva for his second of the game to make it a 9-7 game.

Fairfield had possession in the Pride zone looking to make it a one-goal game but junior Ryan Rielly picked off a pass with 1:02 on the clock and raced downfield to clear the ball and Hofstra was able to maintain possession and pick up its first win of 2014.

Llinares scored a goal and added two assists. In addition to his goal, Hendrickson finished the game with four ground balls. Senior co-captain Anthony Zappone picked up five ground balls, while junior Steve Romano had four ground balls.

Fairfield received two goals each from Federico, Fleming and Warden. Fleming also tied for team-high honors with three ground balls. Murphy had eight saves in the losing effort. Hofstra held a 32-28 advantage in shots and a 29-22 edge in ground balls. The Pride also controlled the face-offs as Clark won 14 of 20 on the afternoon.

Hofstra is back in action Saturday, March 1 at Noon when it hosts Georgetown in the first game of a men's-women's doubleheader at Shuart Stadium. The Pride women's lacrosse team will play Central Connecticut State at 3 p.m.

Lacrosse's top honor to be selected on May 29

NEW YORK ? The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced the 2014 Tewaaraton Award men's watch list presented by Panama Jack, with 17 ACC student-athletes recognized. The list includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlights the early contenders for the 2014 Tewaaraton Award.

The seventeen league representatives are more than twice as many as from any other conference. Syracuse and Virginia tied for the national lead with four players from each team named to the watch list.

ACC student-athletes have won five times in the 13-year history of the award. Past winners include Virginia's Chris Rotelli in 2003, Virginia's Matt Ward in 2006, Duke's Matt Danowski in 2007, Duke's Ned Crotty in 2010, and Virginia's Steele Stanwick in 2011. Syracuse, in its first year in the ACC, has had an additional three players win the award.

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of top collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

Players not named to the initial list have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Additions will be announced on March 20 and April 10. On April 24, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions for players who earn a spot. Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 8 and will be invited to the May 29 ceremony in Washington.

Fowler, Wolf Named to Tewaaraton Watch List

February 28, 2014

DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University seniors Brendan Fowler and Jordan Wolf are among the 50 players selected to the 2014 Tewaaraton Award men's watch list presented by Panama Jack as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday night. Fowler and Wolf are among 17 ACC selections on the list.

Duke has had two Tewaaraton Award winners in program history with Matt Danowski taking home the honor in 2007 and Ned Crotty doing so in 2010 following the Blue Devils' first national title.

Fowler, Duke's faceoff specialist, climbed to national prominence in his junior season after helping the Blue Devils capture their second NCAA crown. In his first year of being the man draw man, Fowler went on to set the NCAA single season record for faceoff wins (339) and the runner-up mark in ground balls in a year (209). He was named to the USILA All-America first team for his efforts as well as being honored as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player after winning 20-of-29 faceoffs in the title tilt. In 2014, Fowler has won 64 percent of his faceoffs (57-of-89) and picked up 38 ground balls to bring his career total to 62 percent.

Duke's top attackman for the past two seasons, Wolf headlines the Blue Devil offense with 19 points in his first four games. He is on pace to become just the fourth player in Duke history to reach the 100 career goals and 100 career assists marks, needing just 10 more assists to join the elite fraternity. A four-time All-ACC honoree, Wolf is the first Duke player to achieve All-ACC honors in each of his first three seasons as a Blue Devil. He currently ranks sixth at Duke in career points, eighth in career goals, seventh in career assists. In the ACC records book, the Wynnewood, Pa., native is 15th in career points and 18th in career goals.

Ranked No. 1 with a 4-0 record, Duke will take on No. 2/3 Maryland in the final ACC regular season matchup between the two squads. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m., at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.

? The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and live stats will be available on GoHeels.com.

TAKING ON THE TAR HEELS

? Saturday will be the 12th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and North Carolina. The Tar Heels have a 6-5 edge in the series. The last two encounters have been decided in overtime with each team claiming a victory.

? The Fighting Irish topped the Tar Heels, 10-9 in triple-overtime, last season at Arlotta Stadium.

? Notre Dame is 1-4 all-time at North Carolina. The last meeting in Chapel Hill took place during the 2011 season and the Tar Heels produced a 9-8 win in overtime.

? Fighting Irish head coach Kevin Corrigan is 5-6 all-time versus North Carolina.

THE LAST TIME

? Notre Dame defeated North Carolina 10-9 in triple-overtime last season at Arlotta Stadium. Matt Kavanagh netted the game winner 15 seconds into the third overtime period.

? The Fighting Irish trailed 9-7 with under a minute left in regulation, yet made a furious comeback to send the game to overtime. A man-up goal from Sean Rogers that was assisted by Kavanagh sliced the deficit to one with 57 seconds remaining. Kavanagh, who had four goals and two assists in the contest, scored to tie things up with just 11 seconds left.

? Liam O'Connor went 17-for-25 in the faceoff X.

KAVANAGH PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF

? After leading the Irish in goals (32) and assists (16) last season, sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh has notched team-bests in goals (6) and assists (6) through the first two games of this season.

? Kavanagh registered a career-high seven points on three goals and a career-best four assists in the season opener at Jacksonville. He followed that up with three goals and two assists against Penn State.

? The seven points against Jacksonville were the most for a Notre Dame player since current senior attackman John Scioscia posted seven (6g, 1a) last season against Marquette. Kavanagh became the first Irish player to have four assists in a game since Neal Hicks did so versus Ohio State on May 3, 2009.

? Kavanagh has scored two or more goals in 13 of his 18 career games with the Irish. He has netted three or more goals on six occasions.

? Head coach Joe Breschi is in his sixth season at North Carolina.

FACE OFF SUCCESS

? Notre Dame boasts a .673 faceoff winning percentage this season.

? Senior Liam O'Connor is 25-for-39 (.641), while junior Nick Ossello is 7-for-8 (.875) and freshman P.J. Finley is 1-for-2.

? The Fighting Irish won 23 of the 30 attempts in the season opener at Jacksonville before going 10-for-19 against Penn State.

OFFENSIVE OPENER

? Notre Dame used 13 different goal scorers in the 19-7 season-opening victory at Jacksonville. Leading the way was sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh, who posted three goals and four assists. Fellow attackman Conor Doyle, a junior, joined Kavanagh with a hat trick.

? The 19 goals were the most for the Fighting Irish since a 19-7 win over Dartmouth on Feb. 28, 2009. That game also was the last time the Irish netted eight goals in a quarter until an eight-goal first period versus Jacksonville.

? Those were the most goals scored in a season-opener for the Fighting Irish since a 21-5 triumph over Canisius in the 1993 opener.

FIRST TIMERS

? Four Notre Dame players netted their first career goal in the season-opening win at Jacksonville. Sophomores Eddy Lubowicki (2 goals) and Trevor Brosco (1 goal) along with freshmen Sergio Perkovic (2 goals) and Robert Collins (1 goal) all found the back of the net for the first time.

FIGHTING IRISH ENTER THE ACC

? Notre Dame is entering its first season of Atlantic Coast Conference play.

? The Fighting Irish have defeated every other ACC member at least once in the last four seasons and the Irish have an 8-8 record against its ACC counterparts (including Syracuse) since the beginning of the 2010 campaign.

? The ACC will be Notre Dame's third different league in the last six seasons. The Irish left the Great Western Lacrosse League following the 2009 campaign to join the BIG EAST.

IRISH RETURN OFFENSE

? Notre Dame returned 111 of its 159 goals (.698) from last season. The Fighting Irish welcomed back four of their top five goal scorers from the 2013 campaign (Matt Kavanagh 32, Conor Doyle 20, Jim Marlatt 20, John Scioscia 14).

A LOOK BACK

? Notre Dame went 11-5 overall last season and finished third in the BIG EAST with a 4-2 mark. The Fighting Irish finished the 2013 regular season with the nation's top RPI and earned a program-best No. 2 seed for the NCAA Championship before advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.

? Attackman Matt Kavanagh led the Irish in goals (32) and assists (16). The 32 goals established a program record for a freshman. Jim Marlatt was the leading midfielder scorer with 20 goals to go along with 12 assists.

? Notre Dame returns two starting close defensemen in seniors Brian Buglione and Stephen O'Hara. The Fighting Irish finished the 2013 season ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense with an 8.31 goals-against average.

HOME SWEET HOME

? Notre Dame is 45-7 (.865) at home since the beginning of the 2006 season.

IRISH EXPOSURE

? Nearly every Notre Dame game this season can be seen on TV or the Internet. The Fighting Irish will have five contests on ESPNU (vs. Virginia, at Syracuse, vs. Duke, vs. Maryland, vs. Army), one game on ESPN3 (at North Carolina) and the season opener at Jacksonville aired on the NBC Sports Network.

? WatchND.tv streamed the Penn State contest and will also provide a free broadcast for the Robert Morris game on April 12.

? Notre Dame's showdown at Ohio State (March 25, 4 p.m.) also will be streamed online (fee required).

A QUARTET OF PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS

? Four Fighting Irish players received preseason All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse. Stephen O'Hara (Sr./D) was a first-team pick, while Jim Marlatt (Sr./M) appeared on the second team and Matt Kavanagh (So./A) was a third-team selection. Matt Landis (So./D) garnered honorable mention accolades.

SOLID SLATE

? Notre Dame is ranked 11th in the latest USILA coaches poll and eight Fighting Irish opponents also appear in the rankings, including seven in the top nine.

? The Fighting Irish are entering their first season of ACC play and all six of the league members can be found in the top 11. Duke, North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia occupy the top four spots, while Syracuse is eighth.

? Notre Dame's non-conference ledger features three other ranked foes ? No. 6 Denver, No. 9 Penn State and No. 19 Ohio State.

MARLATT & O'HARA TO CAPTAIN THE IRISH

? Seniors Jim Marlatt (M) and Stephen O'Hara (D) will serve as team captains for the Fighting Irish in 2014. Both are first-time captains.

O'HARA PICKED IN MLL DRAFT

? Senior defenseman Stephen O'Hara was selected by the Ohio Machine with the first pick of the sixth round (41st overall) of January's 2014 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft.

? O'Hara has started every game over the last two seasons in Notre Dame's close defense, which has been one of the best in the nation over that time. The Fighting Irish allowed just 8.31 goals per game last season. That mark ranked 10th nationally and the Irish were first in 2012 after notching a 6.31 goals-against average. O'Hara, a Fighting Irish team captain, was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team last season.

DOUBLE DOYLE

? Junior attackman Conor Doyle is joined by his older brother Jack Doyle on this season's roster. Jack, a midfielder, graduated from Harvard and was on the Crimson squad for four seasons. He combined to play in 28 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons, but was limited to just one contest over the last two years due to injury. He tallied 14 goals and eight assists at Harvard.

CONOR KELLY LOOKS TO KEEP CAGE CONSISTENCY GOING FOR IRISH

? Junior goalie Conor Kelly is in his first season as a starter for the Fighting Irish. He has a 6.86 goals-against average and a .478 save percentage this season.

? Entering this season, Kelly had played a total of 12:35. All of those minutes came in last season's 17-5 win over Marquette. He made one save and allowed two goals in that contest.

? Kelly is looking to become the latest in a long line of outstanding goalies for the Fighting Irish. Kelly is taking over for John Kemp, who earned All-America honors three times with the Irish. Kemp was named to the USILA All-America First Team in 2012 and earned honorable mention citations in 2011 and 2013.

? Kemp was the third straight Notre Dame goalie to receive All-America honors. Scott Rodgers earned third team All-America honors in 2009 and was an honorable mention pick in 2010. He also was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2010 NCAA Championship.

? Joey Kemp, John's older brother, was a three-time All-America honoree at Notre Dame. He copped first-team honors in 2008 in addition to honorable mention accolades in 2006 and 2007.

? Two other Notre Dame goalies have garnered All-America honors. Alex Cade was an honorable mention pick in 1996 and Kirk Howell was on the USILA Second Team in 2001.

ELITE COMPANY

? Notre Dame and Maryland are the only two programs to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field in each of the last eight seasons.

? Notre Dame and Duke are the only two schools to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship in each of the last four seasons.

Duke Drops Hard-Fought Battle at Maryland

March 1, 2014

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ?Second-ranked Maryland scored seven unanswered goals over the span of three quarters to upend top-ranked Duke 10-6 in ACC men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Mike Chanenchuk led the charge for the Terps with five goals and six points.

"I want to congratulate the University of Maryland," said head coach John Danowski. "They played a great 60 minutes. I thought their goalie was terrific. Defensively, I thought they had a really good game plan and understood how they play. I'm very proud of our guys' first half effort. Certainly we were disappointed in our second-half effort, but the calendar says it's March 1 and the plan is we're going to learn from this film and move forward."

It was a tale of two halves as the squads traded goals in the opening two quarters before Maryland (4-0) took over in the third quarter. The Terrapins held the Blue Devils scoreless for 26:26 en route to opening up the 10-5 lead after trailing 5-3 midway through the second quarter.

Jordan Wolf led Duke (4-1) with two goals and an assist, while Josh Dionne chipped in two tallies. Luke Aaron anchored the defense with a career-high 15 saves. It was Aaron's third straight double-digit save performance.

The first half was back and forth, featuring four ties and three lead changes. Maryland scored the final three goals of the second quarter to take a 6-5 advantage into the break. Both of Wolf and Dionne's goals came in the opening half. Chanenchuk paced the Terps with three of the six goals.

After trading goals in the first quarter, Maryland regained a 3-2 lead just 45 seconds into the second frame before Duke rattled off three straight for the 5-3 advantage midway through the period. Matheis netted two in that span.

The Terrapins answered with three goals of their own in the final 4:40 to send Duke into the locker room trailing for the first time all season.

The third quarter was all Maryland as it outscored Duke 4-0 and held the Blue Devils to just five shots and won the ground ball battle, 8-5. Chanenchuk had two of the quarter's four goals and won the ground ball battle 8-5. Aaron made five stops in the third quarter, as Duke kept the Terps at bay for 11:29. Maryland scored all three goals in the final 3:31.

"It's the kind of sport where I know you're not going to save every shot," said Aaron. "They definitely picked some corners in that quarter so hats off to them. Overall, when it keeps coming wave after wave…I think we held them off for the most part. The ones I did save I saw them. They were outside shots because our defense played really well."

Maryland added one more score 43 seconds into the final quarter before Myles Jones ended Duke's scoring drought at 26:26 to make it 10-6 with 10 minutes remaining. The Terrapins slowed down their offense and were able to hold back a potent Duke scoring attack to remain unbeaten on the year.

Brendan Fowler won 11-of-19 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls and Casey Carroll forced two turnovers and got four ground balls to help anchor the defensive effort.

Duke is back in action at Loyola, March 9 at 6 p.m. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network.

Ryan Scores Five, Runkel Stops 13 As Men's Lacrosse Wins 14-7 At Lehigh

BETHLETHEM, Pa. ? Loyola University Maryland's Kevin Ryan scored a career-high five goals, and Jack Runkel made 13 saves in goal as the seventh-ranked Greyhounds beat No. 14 Lehigh University, 14-7, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action at Ulrich Sports Complex.

Nikko Pontrello added four goals, all in the first half, and Ryan tallied four of his five during the second 30 minutes.

Runkel saved 13 of the Mountain Hawks' 29 total shots in the game.

Lehigh (4-1 overall, 1-1 Patriot League) scored the game's first goal on a rebound shot by Patrick Corbett, but Loyola (4-1, 2-0) tallied three in a row to lead 3-1 on Pontrello's first with 6:27 left in the quarter.

The Mountain Hawks, however, tied the game at 3-3 on an Alex Eaton goal with 51 ticks left in the first quarter, and the teams headed to the second period tied.

Loyola shutout the Mountain Hawks in that frame to start to pull away, going up 7-3 at halftime. Pontrello scored three in a row, and twice on man-up possessions, to start the second quarter, and Brian Schultz added his first of two with 2:32 left in the half.

Lehigh got within three to start the third quarter when Reid Weber scored 3:21 into the period, but that was as close as it would get the remainder of the game.

The Greyhounds scored four-straight goals, all coming from their midfield.

Pat Laconi started the scoring at 8:18 when he ran free down the left alley during a Mountain Hawks substitution, and Jeff Chase found him with a pass. Chase finished with a career-high three assists in the game.

Ryan then bookended a Matt Sawyer goal at 6:12 with scores at 7:26 and 3:12. Ryan's first in the series came when he used a Chase pass to find space and hit a sidearm shot, and he scored his second after rolling off a check near the crease before shooting inside the opposite post.

His second put Loyola ahead 11-4 entering the fourth quarter, but after killing a two-man advantage by the Greyhounds, Lehigh scored twice in a row.

Corbett tallied his second of the game, this on an extra-man opportunity, at 12:55 off a Dan Taylor assist at 12:55. Billy Oppenheimer cut the Mountain Hawks' deficit to five, 11-6, at 6:23 by taking a Weber feed from behind and scoring his frist of the season.

Just over a minute later, Justin Ward, who was one off his career-high with four assists, used a cross-field pass to find Schultz on the crease for a goal.

Ryan added his fourth at 4:53 off a Ward helper, and after Matt Smith scored unassisted for Lehigh at 1:33, Ryan scored on an empty net with 53 ticks of the clock left.

His previous career-high of three goals came just last week at Holy Cross. His eight goals in two games match his career total entering the 2014 season.

Loyola scored its 14 goals on 34 shots, converting on 41.2 percent of its attempts. All but four of the scores were assisted.

The Greyhounds had a 27-22 advantage in groundballs, as Graham Savio had an excellent day at the face-off 'X'. The freshman won 15-of-24 and picked up six ground balls.

Joe Fletcher and Pat Frazier each caused two turnovers for Loyola, while Laconi had one in addition to his career-high tying two goals.

Runkel made stops on 13 of the 20 shots on goal he faced, while Lehigh's Matt Pollion finished with 11 saves.

The Greyhounds take just over a week off before their next game, a step out of conference play on Sunday, March 9, to host Duke University. The game, which is between the last two NCAA Champions, will start at 6 p.m. at Ridley Athletic Complex and will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.

MEN'S LACROSSE FINAL: #20 Penn 12, #6 Denver 10

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team got off
to a slow start on Saturday against No. 6 Denver, but the 20th-ranked
Quakers roared back late and stunned the Pioneers, 12-10, at Franklin
Field.

Penn (2-1) scored four of the last five goals in Saturday's contest and
five of the last seven. After not leading at any point in the game's first
51 minutes, the Quakers went up 10-9 with 8:32 left and never looked back
in gaining the victory.

It was all Denver in the first quarter; the Pioneers outshot Penn, 12-7,
and held a 5-1 lead at the end of the period. Jack Bobzien got things
started for the visitors, scoring unassisted just 2:56 into the game,
before Wesley Berg finished a Tyler Pace feed to make it 2-0. Penn got one
of those goals back when Kevin Brown launched a missile in a man-up
situation, but Zach Miller sandwiched a pair of goals around another
Bobzien tally (off a Harrison Archer feed) that left Denver in control.

Chris Moriarty made it 5-2 early in the second quarter, but Penn
squandered a rare 6-on-3 opportunity and instead Bobzien netted his third
of the day to make the score 6-2 with 10:27 to play in the first half.

Penn woke up. Mark Leonhard rebounded a missed shot and finished it to
make the score 6-3, then Nick Doktor (from Isaac Bock) and Brown (from
Doktor) scored to make it a one-goal game with 2:23 left before halftime.

Denver went back up by two goals when Jeremy Noble scored with 1:03 left,
but then a spectacular defensive interception by Zack Losco led to a fast
break and a Bock goal with just two seconds left on the clock. The teams
went into the locker rooms with the Pioneers up, 7-6.

Denver scored the first goal of the second half, Miller netting his third
just 52 seconds in, but Penn finally drew level late in the period after
Brown's third of the day (off a Joe McCallion feed) and then Losco's first
(off a Berkery feed). The teams went to the final quarter knotted at 8-8.

Denver again went ahead, this time Berg finishing a Noble feed. Nearly
five minutes went off the clock after that, before Penn again tied the
game as Jeff Puckette finished a Doktor feed to make it 9-9. Berkery then
made a nice individual move to score and put the Quakers up for the first
time in the game. Just 1:05 after that, Doktor rifled home a shot for his
own unassisted goal, and that doubled the Red and Blue's advantage.

Denver got one of the goals back with 5:22 left, when Erik Adamson scored
unassisted, but Bock finished off the scoring with 2:42 left off a Berkery
feed.

Denver outshot Penn, 35-32, but Brian Feeney made eight saves to gain the
victory in the Quakers goal. Brian's twin brother, Danny Feeney, was 9/18
on face-offs but had some big wins in the second half as Penn was mounting
its comeback and taking its lead.

Penn returns to action next Saturday, facing off with regional rival
Villanova in a game that will be televised live on Fox College Sports. The
Quakers and Wildcats will face off at 5 p.m.

Men's Lacrosse: Varn's OT Goal Propels Hofstra Over Georgetown

Hempstead, NY - Senior Torin Varn fired a bullet from 11 yards out with 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give the Hofstra Pride a 9-8 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Varn, a co-captain from Ithaca, NY, took a pass from long-stick junior midfielder Ryan Rielly and beat Hoya goalie Jake Haley for his fifth goal of the season for the game-winner. Freshman Brier Davis (Caledon, ON, Canada) led the Pride with three-second quarter goals as Hofstra built a 6-1 lead just 4:13 into the second period. Pride sophomore Sam Llinares (Hauppauge, NY) added a goal and two assists while senior Drew Coholan (Rochester, NY) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Junior Chris Selva Parkland, FL) made 11 saves in the Pride cage as Hofstra won its second consecutive game to even their record at 2-2.

Georgetown was led by Bo Stafford with two goals and one assist while Reilly O'Connor and Devon Lewis each posted two goals. Peter Conley chipped in with a goal and an assist. Hoya goalie Jake Haley made eight saves as Georgetown slipped to 2-2 on the season.

After Lewis opened the scoring in the contest for the Hoyas at the 9:26 mark of the first quarter, Hofstra scored six unanswered goals, including two in the second quarter during a 3:00 minute Georgetown stick penalty near the end of the first quarter. Coholan and Llinares scored the first two Pride goals to take a 2-1 lead after the first quarter. Red-shirt sophomore Korey Hendrickson scored the first man-up goal just 14 seconds into the second, off a pass from Coholan. Davis followed with his fourth of the year, on the man-up, 1:54 later. The Canadian newcomer would added his fifth and sixth of the year, at even strength, over the next 2:05 to give the Pride a 6-1 lead.

But the Hoyas scored seven of the next eight goals to take an 8-7 lead with 7:40 to play in regulation. O'Connor started the spurt with a man-up goal with 3:03 to play in the second quarter. Face-off specialist Tyler Knarr then scored off the face seven seconds later to close the gap to 6-3 at halftime. Stafford added a man-up goal 5:25 into the third before Pride senior Lance Yapor (Glenview, IL) stopped the run with his fifth goal of the season with 3:38 to play in the period to boost the Hofstra lead to 7-4>

Georgetown responded with four consecutive goals as Lewis posted his second of the contest with 12 seconds to play in the third, O'Connor notched his second of the game 1:28 into the fourth and Conley tied the game at 7-all with his seventh goal of the year with 10:12 to play in the fourth quarter. Less than three minutes later, Stafford scored his second of the game, from Jeff Fountain, to give the Hoyas their first lead since 1-0.

Hofstra junior Mike Malave sent the game into overtime with a bounce shot on the run with just 1:14 to play. It was Malave's fourth goal of the season.

In the overtime, the Hoyas turned the ball over twice and Haley made a save on a Llinares shot before the winning goal by Varn. The game-winning goal started in the Pride end on a turnover. Rielly carried the ball over midfield and into the Hoya box where he found Varn on the left side. Varn whistled his shot past Haley for Hofstra's first overtime victory since a 9-8 win at Army in 2009 ? a span of six games. Georgetown outshot the Pride in the contest, 34-31 and picked up 32 ground balls to Hofstra's 26.

Hofstra returns to action on Saturday, March 8 when the Pride host the 19th-ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State. Game time at Shuart Stadium is 1 p.m.

No. 11 Irish Rally To Top No. 2 Tar Heels, 11-10, In ACC Opener

UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME MEN'S LACROSSE

Notre Dame outscores North Carolina 8-3 in the second half.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Joining the nation's strongest men's lacrosse league was going to lead to some memorable games and No. 11 Notre Dame made its first contest in the Atlantic Coast Conference unforgettable with a thrilling 11-10 come-from-behind victory at No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field.

Notre Dame (2-1, 1-0) trailed 8-3 early in the third quarter, yet responded with five unanswered goals to tie the game up less than 30 seconds into the final period. The rally began on a goal from Matt Kavanagh, who had three goals and two assists in the contest. Midfielder Tyler Brenneman sliced the deficit to three (8-5) with his first goal of the season.

North Carolina (3-1, 0-1) was whistled for three non-releasable penalties at the 1:45 mark of the third quarter and the Fighting Irish played two-men up for one minute and took advantage with goals from midfielders Sergio Perkovic and Jim Marlatt. Kavanagh completed his hat trick to make it 8-8. The sophomore attackman has nine goals and eight assists this season.

Following a Tar Heel score from Jimmy Bitter, Notre Dame attackman Conor Doyle drilled a low-angle shot to make it 9-9 with 11:04 remaining. The Fighting Irish grabbed their first lead of the day (10-9) with just over six minutes left in regulation on a Jack Near goal. Another man-up score from the freshman Perkovic pushed the Irish lead to two with 4:14 left. Bitter put North Carolina back to within one 23 seconds later, but that was the final goal of the game.

"The message at halftime was to stay the course and not panic," Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. "I didn't feel that we were playing badly, we just weren't finishing our chances."

The Tar Heels led 4-0 by the 6:06 mark of the first quarter and Notre Dame starting goalie Conor Kelly was replaced by freshman Shane Doss at that time. Doss played the remainder of the game and made 10 saves. Arguably his biggest stop of the day came around the nine-minute mark of the fourth quarter when he negated a point-blank shot from Pat Foster to keep the game tied 9-9.

Midfielder Trevor Brosco put the Irish on the board with 5:30 remaining in the opening period, but the Tar Heels led 5-1 at the end of the quarter. A man-up goal from John Scioscia cut the Tar Heel lead to three (5-2), but consecutive tallies from Foster and Shane Simpson put the hosts up by five. Kavanagh found the back of the net for the first time with just over three minutes left in the first half and the Irish trailed 7-3 at the intermission.

Notre Dame's Liam O'Connor excelled in the faceoff game, winning 16 of his 23 attempts. The Irish also capitalized on most of their man-up opportunities as they went 4-for-7. The Fighting Irish outshot the Tar Heels 39-29 and North Carolina goalie Kieran Burke made 10 saves.

Notre Dame will step away from ACC action to face No. 5 Denver next Saturday in the Pacific Coast Shootout. The game is slated for noon (PT) at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif.

No. 13 UMass Stymies Men's Lacrosse, 15-2

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

March 1, 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? Nick Mariano's five goals led the No. 13 UMass Minutemen (4-0) to a 15-2 win over the Brown men's lacrosse team (1-1) in its home opener on Saturday at Stevenson Field.

Sophomore goaltender, Jack Kelly (West Islip, N.Y.), fell to 1-1 this season as he surrendered 11 goals while turning away seven UMass shots in 45 minutes of action. An impressive showing by UMass' Zach Oliveri turned away the Brown attack, as he stopped 10 shots while only allowing one goal in 51:34 of play.

An early hole and turnovers plagued the Bears on Saturday, as the Minutemen forced Brown into 17 giveaways on the day. Sean Cleary opened the scoring with back-to-back goals, staking the Minutemen to an early 2-0 advantage. Tallies from Brendan Schroeder and Matt Whippen extended the margin to four before Kylor Bellistri got the Bears on the board with a man-up goal with 47 seconds to play in the first quarter.

Brown slowed down the UMass attack in the second stanza but couldn't close the gap as Grant Whiteway and Mariano struck to give the Minutemen a 6-1 halftime lead.

Five Brown turnovers in the third quarter gave way to an 11-1 lead for Minutemen after Mariano netted three goals, including his fourth marker of the day at the 6:47 mark.

Trailing 15-1, freshman attack AJ Lucchese (Sudbury, Mass.) potted his first career goal off of a slick feed from fellow freshman, Dylan Molloy (Setauket, N.Y.) to close out the scoring.

Goaltenders Will Round (Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) and Peter Scott (Mercer Island, Wash.) also made appearances for the Bears on Saturday.

Brown will return to action on Wednesday as they play host to the Hartford Hawks at Stevenson Field. Faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.

Rich Rambo tallies three goals, one assist

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 1, 2014) ? The Rutgers men's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 12-9 contest at Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. Rutgers was paced by junior Rich Rambo (Abington, Pa.), who tallied three goals and one assist in the contest.

The Scarlet Knights (2-2) matched the Seawolves (2-2) in shots with 35 apiece and sophomore GK Kris Alleyne (New City, N.Y.) made nine saves to Stony Brook's eight.

Rutgers got on the board first just nine seconds into the first quarter. After junior FO Brian Lenskold (Webster, N.Y.) won the opening faceoff, Rambo scooped the ground ball sprinted down field before putting the ball in the back of the cage.

Stony Brook then went on a run, scoring the next four goals of the game. Redshirt senior M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) broke the streak, putting one in the top right corner of the net with just 1:56 to go in the first stanza. RU scored first in the second quarter, as senior M Steve DiGiovanni (Cranford, N.J.) fired in a one-timer on an assist from Rambo to cut the Seawolves' lead to 4-3.

Following a Stony Brook goal, RU again cut the lead to just one, this time on a score from sophomore A Scott Bieda (Bridgewater, N.J.) with 1:42 to go in the half. The Scarlet Knights were down, 5-4, at the break.

Coming out of the midpoint, Rambo was on a role. He knotted the game at 5-5 just 22 seconds into the third quarter, before making a nice turnaround move from the top at the 9:12 mark, firing one in for another score to give Rutgers a 6-5 lead.

Stony Brook scored the next three and took an 8-6 advantage. Freshman A Christian Trasolini (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) trimmed the lead to one, firing one in from the wing with 8:24 to go on an assist from Bieda. The Seawolves scored the next goal, but on the ensuing faceoff, Terranova scooped the ground ball and took it down the field before putting it in the cage to cut the lead back to one, 9-8, with 7:23 to go.

The Seawolves posted the next two scores, gaining an 11-8 advantage with 3:45 on the clock. Junior M Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored with 1:25 to go to cut the lead to 11-9, but it wouldn't be enough as Stony Brook scored again to secure the victory.

Falcons Drop 6-4 Contest to VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. ? Despite turning in its best defensive performance of the season, the Air Force lacrosse team fell to host VMI, 6-4, Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons were first to get on the board, getting a score from senior captain Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.) less than two minutes into the contest on a feed from Keith Dreyer (Jr., Malvern, Pa.). However, VMI responded its own goal at the 11:12 mark to tie the game at 1-1.

The Keydets (1-4) took the lead with a man-up goal midway through the opening period, while increasing their advantage to two goals with another man-up score with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Smith added his second goal of the game, assisted by Kyle Cassady (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio), with 1:31 on the clock, as the Falcons went into the second period trailing 3-1.

The first two goals of the second quarter came from VMI, as the Keydets pushed their lead to 5-2 with four minutes left in the half. A tally from Christopher Allen (So., Hillsborough, N.J.), assisted by Dreyer, was the last of the period, to cut the margin to 5-3 at the half.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the third quarter, and the scoreless drought for both teams continued until the 6:22 mark in the final stanza, when Tommy McKee (Sr., Holt, Mich.) found the back of the net to get Air Force back within one. However, VMI scored with two minutes remaining to seal the victory, as the Falcons were unable to get another goal.

The Falcons (2-3) outshot the Keydets, 33-23, for the game, but were stifled by VMI goalkeeper Evan Windisch, who came up with 14 saves. Air Force also forced a season-high 16 turnovers, while committing just 11 turnovers. However, the Keydets had the advantage at the face-off X, winning 9-of-14 face-offs in the game.

Laconi, Pontrello, Runkel Receive Patriot League Weekly Honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. ? Three Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse players ? short-stick defensive midfielder Pat Laconi (defensive), attacker Nikko Pontrello (offensive) and Jack Runkel (goalkeeper) ? earned weekly awards from the Patriot League on Monday after the Greyhounds defeated then-No. 14 Lehigh University, 14-7, on Saturday afternoon.

Pontrello and Runkel earned their honors for the second week in a row, while Laconi is the second Greyhound in as many weeks to receive the Defensive Player of the Week honor, following in the footsteps of fellow co-captain Joe Fletcher.

Laconi scored a pair of goals in the game at Lehigh, matching his career-high set just over a week before in a game against Towson Unviersity. He also caused a turnover and was part of a Loyola defense that held Lehigh to 29 shots and only 20 on goal.

Pontrello recorded his fifth multi-point outing in as many games this year and his fourth in a row with three or more goals. The junior attacker scored four goals, all in the first half, including three in a row during a second quarter that saw Loyola outscore the Mountain Hawks, 4-0. He has scored 19 goals this season, already eclipsing his previous seasonal best of 16 from last year. His 3.8 goals per game are best in the Patriot League and fifth in the NCAA.

Runkel was tabbed with the weekly goalkeeper honor for the second consecutive time after making 13 saves and allowing just seven Lehigh goals on Saturday. In Loyola's last three games, Runkel has yielded only 12 goals to Towson, Holy Cross and Lehigh. He has played to a 7.81 goals against average and a .585 saves percentage.

Loyola, which moved up to No. 5 nationally in the USILA Coaches and Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Media Polls and fourth in the Lacrosse Magazine rankings, hosts No. 4 Duke University at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, in a game that will air nationally on CBS Sports Network.

Hempstead, NY ? Hofstra University attackman Brier Davis has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 2, the CAA announced Monday afternoon.

Davis, a freshman from Caledon, Ontario, Canada, recorded a total of five goals in the Hofstra home victories over #19 Fairfield and Georgetown last week. He tallied two goals in the 9-7 win over Fairfield and scored his first collegiate hat-trick in Hofstra's 9-8 overtime victory over Georgetown at Shuart Stadium.

Last Tuesday against Fairfield, Davis scored both of his goals in the first half as Hofstra took a 6-3 lead at halftime on the way to the two-goal win over the Stags. On Saturday against Georgetown, Davis scored all three of his goals during a six-goal Pride run in the first half. All of Davis' goals, which came consecutively, were scored in the second, including a man-up goal while Georgetown was serving a three-minute illegal stick penalty. He took six shots against the Hoyas and three shots against the Stags.

The Canadian freshman was a two-time US Lacrosse All-American while at The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Davis hails from the same hometown in Ontario as former Hofstra great and three-time USILA All-American honorable mention, Jay Card. Davis now has six goals in 2014.

Hofstra (2-2) returns to action on Saturday, March 8 when the Pride host the Buckeyes of Ohio State University (1-3). Game time at James M. Shuart Stadium is 1 p.m.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 3, 2014) ? The Rutgers men's lacrosse team hits the road for the fourth-straight time, taking on Army in West Point, N.Y., on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. The Scarlet Knights will play in New York for the third time in the first five games of the season.

In thrilling fashion, the Rutgers men's lacrosse team upset No. 20 Army in West Point, N.Y., 9-8, on an overtime goal with just 45 seconds remaining from redshirt senior A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.). The Scarlet Knights posted nine goals against a Black Knights defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation by allowing just 5.00 goals per game coming into the contest.

The Scarlet Knights improved to 3-2, while the Black Knights also moved to 3-2 with the loss. Klimchak paced Rutgers with four goals. Senior M Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.) also posted four points with one goal and three assists.

The game was knotted, 8-8, heading into overtime. With just 1:46 remaining in the extra period, the Scarlet Knights called a timeout. Coming out of the break, RU put a shot on goal that was saved by Army GK Sam Somers. As the Black Knights attempted to clear after coming out of their own zone, they turned it over on a bad pass.

Rutgers scooped the ball and it was dished to DePaolera. DePaolera sprinted into the Army zone and tossed it across the front of the cage about 10 yards out. Klimchak grabbed the pass and fired it past Somers from four yards out with just 45 seconds to go in the overtime period for the sudden victory goal.

To start the game, Army jumped out to a 5-1 lead, capped with a goal at the 9:11 mark in the second quarter. The lone goal for RU in that span came when senior M Ben Schwing (Medford, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season in the opening period.

The Scarlet Knights had an answer, scoring the next six goals of the game to take a 7-5 lead with 14:09 to go in the third quarter. In that span, Klimchak tallied a hat trick. DePaolera, senior M Steve DiGiovanni (Cranford, N.J.) and junior M Rich Rambo (Abington, Pa.) also scored in the run. DePaolera added two assists.

The Black Knights quickly put the next two on the board and knotted it up, 7-7, with 9:02 left in the third stanza. Freshman A Connor Murphy (Cazenovia, N.Y.) regained the lead for Rutgers, finding the back of the cage with 2:44 on the clock in the third.

Leading 8-7, Rutgers surrendered a goal to Army with 4:52 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie it at 8-8. Neither team would score again in regulation, sending the contest into overtime, when Klimchak secured the 9-8 victory.

The Scarlet Knights are back in action in High Point Solutions Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 8 vs. Monmouth.
