Defensive Effort Leads No. 14 Men’s Lacrosse to 8-3 Win at Fairfield

Scarlet Knights led by Connor Murphy with three goals

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – No. 14 Rutgers men’s lacrosse used a suffocating defensive effort to claim an 8-3 road victory at Fairfield (1-2) Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights got out to a 7-1 halftime lead and held on for the five-goal victory. The team improved to 3-0 on the season in head coach Brian Brecht’s 100th career coaching victory.

“I was very impressed with our defensive unit today,” head coach Brian Brecht said. “The maturity in our defense end with Chris Groel, Michael Rexrode, Alex Bronzo and Max Edelmann really helped today. They were composed and communicating well. They did a great job today, and it was great to see us generating those offensive opportunities. We have grown over the last couple of games, and we can continue to use these games to get better going into the month of March.”

Rutgers held a 41-25 advantage in shots and forced the Stags into committing 20 turnovers. The Scarlet Knights were 24-of-25 on clears and edged the home team 31-30 in ground balls. Tyler Behring made 16 saves for the Stags.

The defense was spearheaded by the efforts of Chris Groel (seven ground balls) and Michael Rexrode (three ground balls, two caused turnovers). Alex Bronzo also scooped three ground balls, Garrett Michaeli had three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while goalkeeper Max Edelmann made nine saves and allowed just three goals. Rutgers limited CAA Preseason Player of the Year Colin Burke to just one assist and four turnovers.

Offensively, Connor Murphy led the team with three goals. Jeff George added two tallies, and Jules Heningburg, Casey Rose and Christian Scarpello scored one apiece. Scarpello also added an assist and three caused turnovers.

The Scarlet Knights opened the contest with a five-goal run to take command of the game. A rocket from George, which ripped the netting off the goal, opened the lid on the scoring seven minutes in. That preceded goals from Heningburg and Murphy for a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes.

George’s second of the day opened the scoring in the second quarter. That was followed by Scarpello scoring a man-down goal on a ricochet off an opposing defender for a 5-0 lead.

After Fairfield’s first tally, Rutgers scored twice in the final 90 seconds of the opening half. Rose made the lead 6-1, and then Murphy scored with 3.8 seconds on the clock for a 7-1 halftime advantage.

The Stags pushed back early in the third quarter, scoring twice in the first 2:31 of play. However, RU’s defense locked down from there, holding Fairfield scoreless in the final 27 minutes of action. Murphy completed his hat trick with 10 minutes remaining in the game for the 8-3 final margin.

Next up for the Scarlet Knights is a home game Tuesday against Wagner to start a four-game homestand. That game will start at 3 p.m. and will be televised nationwide by Big Ten Network.

Postgame Notes

  • The three goals allowed was the least RU gave up since allowing three to NJIT last season
  • Groel’s seven ground balls was a season high.
  • Murphy’s hat trick was the fourth of his career.
  • Garett Michaeli set career-highs in ground balls (two) and caused turnovers (three).
  • Joe Fransisco was 8-of-13 at the faceoff ‘X’.
  • The victory was the 100th of head coach Brian Brecht’s career. He has won 35 games at Rutgers after amassing 65 victories at Siena.

SUBJECT: Shippensburg Uses Final Run to Secure 13-9 Victory over Wilmington Women’s Lacrosse in Season Opener

DATE: February 25, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - in a game of three-goal surges, Shippensburg had the last say in the 2017 season opener, defeating the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team, 13-9, at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (0-1) answered every Raider (1-0) run with a goal streak of their own, but the Raiders were able to produce the last laugh, separating themselves from the Wildcats down the stretch.

The game started with the Raiders jumping out to a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats were able to find their offensive groove. Megan Card produced the first goal of the 2017 season for the Wildcats followed by back-to-back goals from Gabby Spalt to tie the game with 10:39 left in the half.

But back came the Raiders, scoring the next three goals of the contest to take a 6-3 lead with 4:25 on the clock before the break. Alexis Olsen buried her free position shot to end the streak before Card added another with 10 seconds left to put the Wildcats only down one at the half.

Out of the break, Spalt quickly tied the game with her third goal of the day but the Raiders once again had an answer for the Wildcats. Allison Fugate assisted on the first and scored the next two goals for the Raiders to once again grab a 9-6 advantage with 22:03 to play.

Lashay Ross scored her first collegiate career goal to break up the Raiders’ momentum, but Shippensburg responded with another free position goal to again take a 10-7 lead. Ross converted another shot before Auryonah Nash scored her first collegiate career goal with 5:54 to play to close the gap to 10-9.

Still trailing by one, Zameria Jones came up with the turnover the Wildcats needed, stripping the Raiders offensive player and scooping up the ground ball. Followed a good clear attempt, however, the Wildcats turned the ball over themselves with 2:54 remaining and the Raiders took advantage.

Shippensburg scored out of a timeout to move ahead 11-9 and the Wildcats couldn’t recover another draw control. The Raiders tacked on two more down the stretch to secure the victory, 13-9.

Spalt led the Wildcats with a hat trick while Card and Ross added two goals each. Card added an assist for three points on the day. Ross also led the team with six draw controls while Nash, Card, and Christina Ziegler added two draws each. Maddie Hurm made eight saves in goal for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats take off for Florida to compete in their next two contests, first with a game against Keiser on Monday afternoon. The opening draw is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Overpowers VMI Early and Late for 15-9 Men's Lacrosse Victory
DATE: February 28, 2017
LEXINGTON, Va.
-- Delaware jumped out to a big 9-4 halftime lead and used an overpowering five-goal fourth quarter to win its second straight game Tuesday afternoon as the Blue Hens men’s lacrosse squad knocked off host VMI 15-9 at Drill Field.
The Blue Hens (3-2), who downed the Keydets for the second straight year and remained unbeaten in four all-time meetings, prevailed thanks to a big finish in the fourth quarter. VMI (1-2) had cut the Delaware lead to 10-8 early in the final stanza but the Blue Hens pulled away, outscoring them 5-1 the rest of the way for the victory.
Delaware sophomore Andrew Romagnoli led all scorers with four goals - his fourth hat trick in five games this season - and also dished out an assist while senior midfielder Steve DeLargy scored three times, including twice in the final 8:09, and dished out an assist.
In all, seven different Blue Hens found the back of the net as senior Trupert Ortlieb scored three times, freshman Charlie Kitchen scored twice and dished out an assist, senior Paul Major had a goal and three assists, senior Will Hirschmann contributed a goal and an assist, and sophomore Campbell Parker scored once.
“We are really pleased to come away with this win today,” said Bob Shillinglaw, who won his 330th career game. “Give credit to VMI as they played hard all four quarters. It was a hard-fought victory for our guys.”
Also for the Blue Hens, freshman Crosby Matthews won 14 of 19 faceoffs attempts and freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, turned back eight shots to earn the win in his second straight start.
Romagnoli and Ortlieb each scored three times in the first half to stake the Hens to a 9-4 lead at halftime. VMI used a 4-1 run to pull to within 10-8 eight seconds into the final stanza, but Hirschmann and Romagnoli scored two minutes apart to give the Hens some breathing room and DeLargy put the game away with two goals in the final 8:09.
Delaware held a commanding 53-25 advantage in shots, a 37-31 edge in groundballs, won 16 of 27 faceoffs, and were successful on 21 of 22 clear attempts. The Hens also forced a season-high 17 turnovers.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Hens have started out 2-0 on the road this season, outscoring opponents 33-14 with Ortlieb scoring nine of those goals
• Delaware has now won three straight road games since last season, the team’s longest streak since winning six straight games on an opponent’s home field between 2007-08
• DeLargy, a fifth-year graduate student, notched his third career hat trick
• Kitchen has now scored two or more points in each of his first five collegiate games, a UD record
• Delaware returns to the road Saturday to take on Villanova on March 4 at 3 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College Lacrosse program was downed by Brown 16-5 at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior Pamela Giordano led Iona with three goals on seven shots. Senior Erin Pugh and sophomore Maureen Murphy each found the back of the net in the defeat. Pugh also grabbed a game-high eight ground balls and caused four turnovers.

In net, Shannon McCaffrey started the game, and was relieved by freshman Samantha Tyo, who allowed nine goals and stopped six Bears shots.

As a team, the Gaels took 26 shots and grabbed 22 ground balls. The Maroon & Gold had the advantage in draw controls, 14-9 with junior Jenna Tolzmann collecting six.

In the first half, Giordano stopped an early 2-0 run by the Bears to cut the deficit to one. Brown rallied off four unanswered goals before Giordano and Murphy connected to cut the Bears lead to 6-3. The Gaels went into halftime trailing 9-3.

Iona tallied the first score of the second frame, as Giordano completed a hat trick to trim the deficit to five. The Brown offense was too much for Iona to handle, as they scored the next three before Pugh scored on a free-possession shot; their last of the game. The Bears scored the final four goals over a seven minute span to down the Maroon & Gold.

The Gaels will complete non-conference play on Sunday, Mar. 19 at La Salle.

Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Defeats No. 18/12 James Madison, 12-9

Reilly collects hat trick, Turturro adds six points in ranked victory

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. (March 11, 2017) – Joanna Rielly recorded a hat trick, Amanda Turturro dished out five assists and Nicole Kopyta and Samantha Budd each had two scores to help Rutgers women’s lacrosse notch a 12-9 victory over No. 18/12 James Madison on Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The win was the first over a ranked opponent since the Scarlet Knights defeated No. 19 Ohio State on May 5, 2016 in last year’s Big Ten Tournament. It was also the first victory against the Dukes since 2014.

Three players – Budd, Kopyta and Reilly – produced multiple goals for RU, led by Reilly’s three scores. Eight players found the back of the net on Saturday afternoon, while Turturro’s five assists marked a career high. Kristina Dunphey also pitched in two assists to help the cause.

“It was a total team effort today and I’m so proud of this group,” said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. “We controlled some vital aspects of the game at key times and fought for a full 60 minutes. James Madison is a very talented program, so we’re excited to build off of this victory.”

Junior goalie Bianca Dente continued her strong play from between the pipes, as she recorded six saves and held James Madison to just nine scores. It was the second straight opponent Rutgers has held under 10 scores.

James Madison added two straight goals before Kopyta scored on an assist from Dunphey to make it 2-1 at the 14:45 mark in the first half. Both sides traded scores before the Scarlet Knights went on a 4-0 scoring run. Reilly delivered back-to-back goals, with her second extending RU’s lead, 6-3. Kopyta and senior Kerri Puckhaber also found the back of the net during the stretch.

The Dukes attempted to close the gap with back-to-back strikes, but Rutgers held on to a 6-5 lead into halftime.

Two straight goals from leading scorer Kristen Gaudin gave James Madison a 7-6 lead with 22:34 remaining in the second half. Rutgers responded with another 4-0 run from four different Scarlet Knights, started by Turturro’s lone goal of the day. Dunphy, Dana Gisonno and Paige Paratore also scored as RU owned a 10-7 lead with 16 minutes to play.

JMU got to as close as 11-9 at the eight minute mark in the half, but Turturro found Budd in the closing minutes to put the game out of reach.

Rutgers returns to action on Tuesday, March 14, when the Scarlet Knights host Manhattan at 3:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• This was the first win against a ranked opponent since Rutgers defeated No. 19 Ohio State in overtime, 11-10, on May 5, 2016 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

• The Scarlet Knights are now 2-3 all-time against James Madison, as the victory was the first against the school since March 15, 2014 at High Point Solutions Stadium. James Madison was also ranked in that game at No. 20.

• RU moved to 2-1 against CAA opponents this season. Rutgers defeated Drexel, 9-8, last week and fell to Delaware, 15-5, on Feb. 25 on the road.

• Reilly’s three goals were the most she has scored in a game this season.

• Turturro’s five helpers marked a career-high, topping the four helpers she had against Hofstra on March 25, 2016. Her six points tied a career-high set earlier this season against Lafayette.

• Kopyta has now collected multiple games in each Rutgers’ first seven games. She now leads the Scarlet Knights with 15 goals this season. In total, eight Scarlet Knights have recorded multiple goals in a game this year.

• Gisonno recorded her first career goal in the win.

• Three Scarlet Knights – Paratore, Budd and Alana Navaroli – each had three draw controls to lead RU in that category.

Rutgers Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Ohio State, 15-5

Budd, Dunphey collect hat tricks to help Scarlet Knights earn first Big Ten win of season

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 24, 2017) – Five players scored multiple goals to help Rutgers women’s lacrosse defeat Ohio State, 15-5, on Friday night at High Point Solutions Stadium. The win is the Scarlet Knights first in Big Ten Conference play, as RU has now won four of its past five games.

“It was a great performance by us,” said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. “I thought in the first half we did a lot of nice things, but we didn’t land as many shots as we’d like. In the second half, we shot 10-for-16, which was a lot better. Our opportunities were there throughout the game, we just did a better job capitalizing on them in the second half.”

Senior Kristina Dunphey and freshman Samantha Budd each recorded a hat trick in the victory, with Budd’s the first of her career. Three other Scarlet Knights – Paige Paratore, Macy Scott and Amanda Turturro – had two goals apiece as Rutgers (6-4, 1-1 Big Ten) outshot the Buckeyes, 36-21.

Junior Bianca Dente recorded nine saves in the win, the second straight game she has collected eight or more stops between the pipes. The Scarlet Knights forced 17 OSU turnovers and allowed just five goals for the second time in their last three games.

Ohio State (6-6, 0-2 Big Ten) scored the first goal of the contest before Rutgers responded with five straight scores. Turturro capped the run with back-to-back conversions, including one off an assist from sophomore Abbey Brooks to make it 5-1 at the 11:04 mark. The Buckeyes added back-to-back goals of their own for a 5-3 score at halftime.

It was all RU in the second stanza, as it outscored OSU 10-2 in the final 30 minutes. Budd quickly contributed her second goal of the contest on an unassisted strike three minutes into the half, part of a 3-1 scoring run out of the locker room for the Scarlet Knights. Her goal gave Rutgers an 8-4 advantage with 22:32 left to play.

Molly Wood scored Ohio State’s final goal of the night to make it 8-5, but RU ended the contest with seven-straight scores to put the game out of reach. Budd’s third goal of the evening made it 12-5, while Dunphey, Scott and junior Sydney Quinn all scored down the stretch to help RU secure the win.

Rutgers continues its four-game home stretch when it hosts Niagara next Tuesday at High Point Solutions Stadium. Opening draw is slated for 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES

• Tonight’s victory over Ohio State was the third straight for Rutgers against the Buckeyes. The Scarlet Knights defeated OSU twice last season, including an 11-10 overtime win in the first round of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament.

• RU’s 15 goals tonight were the most against a conference opponent since April 30, 2016, when it dropped 16 against Michigan in Piscataway.

• Rutgers forced more turnovers (17) then it had (10) for the first time this season.

• This was Budd’s first-career hat trick and the most she has scored in a single game. Budd has now produced multiple goals in three games this season, the most for a rookie this year.

• Kopyta has scored in all but one game this season. Rutgers is 6-3 when she finds the back of the net.

• Dunphey has scored in each of her past four games for a total of 10.

No. 1 Men’s Lacrosse Undefeated Through Non-Conference Play

Penn State starts season at 9-0 following a 15-8 win over Cleveland State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The top-ranked Penn State men’s lacrosse team (9-0) went undefeated through non-conference play for the first time ever on Saturday afternoon following a 15-8 win over visiting Cleveland State (3-7) in front of 2,112 cheering fans at the Penn State Lacrosse Field.

The Nittany Lions’ benchmark of undefeated non-conference play dates back to 2000 when Penn State joined the ECAC before transitioning to the CAA and eventually the Big Ten. The 9-0 start continues the best start to a season in program history. Ten consecutive wins in a season marks the best by any Penn State team; the 2013 squad holds the record.

Penn State saw contributions from all over the field, with 10 players tallying points in the game.

The attacking trio of senior Nick Aponte, sophomore Grant Ament and freshman Mac O’Keefe paced the offensive production.

Ament led the Penn State with six points on four goals and a pair of assists, marking the fourth game this season in which the Doylestown, Pennsylvania native has accounted for six or more points.

O’Keefe continued to be a goal-scoring threat, logging four scores in the game. With 34 goals this season, O’Keefe moves to third in single-season goals during head coach Jeff Tambroni’s tenure. His 34 goals are 10-shy of the single-season freshman record, held by TJ Sanders.

Aponte rounded out the performance with a three-goal, two-assist outing. The senior logged his 41st-straight game tallying a point, the seventh longest streak of its kind nationally.

Outside of the attack trio, sophomore midfielder Nick Spillane added a multi-point game in which he contributed a pair of assists.

Four Penn State players added a goal in the seven-point win. Senior midfielder Mike Sutton, sophomore midfielder Kevin Hill, sophomore attackman Jimmy Nowoswiat and freshman attackman Conor Smith all added goals. Smith and senior midfielders Dan Craig and Drake Kreinz each added assists. Nowoswiat and Kreinz logged their first goal and assist of the season, respectively. Smith’s helper was the first of his career.

On the defensive end, freshman Colby Kneese logged his ninth win of the season after making 10 saves in just over 48 minutes of action. Junior Will Schreiner and sophomore Trevor Scollins both saw action between the pipes as well, with Scollins recording his first two saves of 2017. The Nittany Lions defense forced six turnovers, as freshman Nick Cardille forced a pair while Matt Donnelly, Matthew Fisher and Tommy Wright added one as well.

Penn State won 20 of the 26 faceoffs thanks to the combined efforts of freshman Gerard Arceri (17-21, 11 GB) and senior Billy Lombardi (3-5, 2 GB).

Of the 42 players on Penn State’s roster, 36 saw playing time against the Vikings .

Penn State begins the conference slate next Sunday, April 2, at 7 p.m., when the Nittany Lions host undefeated Ohio State (9-0) at Penn State Lacrosse Field. The game is set for national broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

The Turning Point

Penn State made sure to own the momentum from the jump, with each of its starting attackmen in Ament, Aponte and O’Keefe logging goals in the first three minutes of play.

Difference Makers

Penn State

·Grant Ament – Ament posted a team-best six points on four goals and two assists. The sophomore had no trouble creating offense on his own, with three of his four goals coming unassisted.

·Mac O’Keefe – O’Keefe continued to show why he is one of the nation’s premier goal-scorers, finding the back of the net four times in during the game.

·Faceoff unit – Arceri and Lombardi played a large role in the Nittany Lions’ success, winning 77 percent of the faceoffs to help Penn State to the seven-goal win.

·Groundball game – The Nittany Lions claimed most of the 50-50 balls, winning the battle for loose balls by 13, leading the category wire-to-wire.

Cleveland State

·Vikings midfield – Cleveland State’s midfield provided a spark for the Vikings, as Stephen Masi, Nick Wendel and Noah Gleeson combined for four goals and a pair of assists

·Man-up unit – The Vikings took advantage of Penn State’s five penalties, going 3-of-6 on man-up opportunities.

By Quarters

First Quarter

Penn State opened the first quarter with a quick trio of goals, courtesy of each of its starting attackmen in the first three minutes. O’Keefe struck first on a quick pass from Aponte. Aponte then buried one of his own on a kick out from Ament. Less than a minute later Aponte returned the favor, dishing the ball to Ament on a fast break for the score. Cleveland State responded with a man-up goal to make it 3-1 at the 10:02 mark. Less than 30 seconds later, Ament hit a pump fake before scoring his second goal of the day. Cleveland State scored with just over two minutes left to wrap up the first quarter scoring.

Penn State 4, Cleveland State 2

Second Quarter

Hill scored his 11th goal of the 2017 campaign, humming the ball past the goalie roughly five minutes in. Penn State found the back of the net again with 7:20 left in the quarter, as Aponte scored his second of the game. Just 16 seconds later O’Keefe made it a 3-0 run, as Kreinz found the rookie for a one-on-one opportunity with Cleveland State’s goalie. Cleveland State scored twice before Penn State headed to the locker room with a three-goal lead.

Penn State 7, Cleveland State 4

Third Quarter

Cleveland State logged its third consecutive goal to open the third frame. With the two-goal lead, Penn State opened a 4-0 run over the course of the third quarter. The streak began as Craig swung the ball from the right side to O’Keefe, who posted his third score of the day. Ament then logged back-to-back goals, dodging from behind the net for both scores. O’Keefe scored again with 28 seconds left in the quarter, as a stumbling Spillane got the pass off, allowing O’Keefe to rip the shot into the back of the net.

Penn State 11, Cleveland State 5

Fourth Quarter

Cleveland State capitalized on a man-up opportunity to open scoring in the fourth. Penn State then scored it’s flashiest goal of the game, as Ament whipped a behind-the-back pass to find Aponte for the easy score. Sutton made it a seven-goal advantage with 13:15 left on the clock, rifling the shot from distance on an assist from Smith. Gleeson logged his second goal of the day for CSU before Spillane kicked the ball to Smith who scored his first goal of the day on a point-blank shot. Nowoswiat wrapped around the goal for his first score of the season before a late man-up goal from the Vikings closed the gap to seven at the end of the game.

Penn State 15, Cleveland State 8

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Earns Votes in USILA Coaches, Maverik Media Top 20 Polls
DATE: March 27, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- Coming off a historic win over No. 1 ranked Rutgers University on Saturday, the surging University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad earned votes in both the national coaches and media Top 20 polls announced Monday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (7-3) posted their first-ever victory over a No. 1 ranked team Saturday in a 13-9 win over previously undefeated Rutgers at Delaware Stadium. The Scarlet Knights had entered the game 8-0 and were ranked No. 1 in the Maverik media poll and No. 3 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) coaches poll.
Delaware, which has now won six of its last seven games, earned votes in both polls this week, garnering recognition in the USILA poll for the second straight week and in the Maverik poll for the first time this season. The Hens last earned votes in the national polls in 2013.
The Blue Hens will be looking to continue the momentum this Saturday when they open Colonial Athletic Association play at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. at 1 p.m.
Delaware jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter against Rutgers on Saturday and held a 7-2 advantage at halftime. Rutgers fought back to close to within one goal early in the fourth quarter, but the Hens answered with four straight goals to put the game away. Delaware’s starting midfield unit scored 9 of the 13 goals and freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca turned back a career-high 19 shots, the most saves for a UD netminder since 2008.
“This is a game these guys will be talking about 10 years from now,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who will retire at the end of the season after 39 years at the UD helm. “I am so happy for these guys, they are a great group of kids.”
Notre Dame moved into the top spot in the USILA poll followed by previous No. 1 Penn State, Syracuse, Denver, Ohio State,  Hofstra, Rutgers, Albany, Maryland, and Army. In the Maverik poll, Notre Dame moved into the No. 1 position followed by Penn State, Hofstra, Syracuse, Ohio State, Denver, Army, Albany, Maryland, and Rutgers.

O’Keefe Named Co-Freshman of the Week

Rookie bags his fifth Freshman of the Week honor

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Following No. 2 Penn State’s 15-8 win over Cleveland State on March 25, freshman attackman Mac O’Keefe was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

With the honor, O’Keefe has earned five Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards, more than any other player in Penn State men’s lacrosse history.

O’Keefe logged the award after a four-goal performance against Cleveland State. It marked his sixth game of the 2017 season in which he logged three or more goals.

The Syosset, New York, native’s goal scoring prowess is unmatched currently, as he leads the country in goals scored with 34 total in nine contests. O’Keefe’s 3.78 goals per game rank second nationally.

With 34 goals this season, O’Keefe moved to third in single-season goals during head coach Jeff Tambroni’s tenure. His 34 goals are 10-shy of the single-season freshman record, held by TJ Sanders.

The undefeated Nittany Lions face Ohio State (9-1) in a top-five matchup on Sunday, April 2, at 7 p.m. The game is set for national broadcast on the Big Ten Network, with Dean Linke and Mark Dixon on the call.

NOTES & QUOTES“NJIT was focused, well prepared and played hard this afternoon which prevented us from getting some breathing room until late in the game. With three games this week, our staff wanted to play some more guys and utilize some of our depth, so it was great to see some new faces play well today. With a quick turnaround we have to enjoy this one for the rest of the day then turn the page and focus on the next one.”

- Monmouth moved to 8-3 on the season, its best 11-game start in four seasons.

LEXINGTON, Va. - Despite five goals from junior attack Wesley Sanders and trailing just 4-3 after the first quarter, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 16-10 score to visiting Jacksonville Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2.

Sanders' seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) for a single game is tied for sixth most in program history, and tied for second most for a conference game. His five goals scored for a single conference game is also tied for second most in program history.

Although the Keydets (2-8, 0-4) trailed by just one after the opening period, the Dolphins (1-9, 1-3) outscored VMI 3-1 in the second quarter and 4-1 in the third quarter to break open the game to move ahead by an 11-5 tally with only one quarter remaining. Both teams scored five goals apiece in the final period for the final result.

"Today was disappointing because we know we're better than we showed," said VMI head coach Jon Birsner. "Hats off to Jacksonville for never letting off the pedal and taking advantage of our lack of communication. The possession game played a huge factor with AJ getting hurt early in the game at faceoffs. We got dominated at that spot the rest of the game and when you combine that with unforced turnovers on offense you're going to play too much defense to win a Division 1 lacrosse game.

"It's a good and a bad thing to have our shortest turnaround playing at Monmouth on Monday so we need to learn from our mistakes, travel well and play VMI lacrosse in two days."

VMI outshot the Dolphins by a 49-31 ratio and had just 12 turnovers to Jacksonville's 16, but the Dolphins earned 48 groundballs to VMI's 25 and won 19 of 28 faceoffs to win the possession battle. The Keydets also struggled to capitalize on extra-man opportunities as they went 0-3 while the Dolphins went 1-2.

The Keydets were led by Sanders' five goals while John Daniel and Dale Mattice both contributed two. Senior Nick Dodd scored the other goal for VMI.

Jacksonville's Will Hendrick and McLean Chicquen both recorded three goals to lead the Dolphins while Eric Applegate, Mitchell Parker and Zach Buller each put in two. Goalie Ben Gleichenhaus won the game with six saves while VMI's Joe Riccadonna picks up the loss despite eight saves for the afternoon.

The Keydets turn around quickly for a makeup game with Monmouth slated for Monday at 2:30 p.m. in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The game was originally to be played in early March but was postponed due to snowy weather concerns.

No. 1 Men's Lacrosse Hits First Setback Against No. 8 Terps

Four Nittany Lions post multiple goals in four-goal loss.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The top-ranked Penn State men’s lacrosse team (10-1, 1-1 Big Ten) faced its first setback of the 2017 season on Saturday, dropping a 15-11 contest to No. 6/8 Maryland (7-2, 2-0 Big Ten) at Maryland Stadium.

The loss snapped Penn State’s 10-game win streak, with the 2017 team being just the second in program history to win 10 consecutive games in a single season.

Four Nittany Lions recorded multiple goals and five had multiple points as the two sides combined for 26 goals.

Freshman attackman Mac O’Keefe paced Penn State’s goal-scoring efforts, logging a hat trick with three goals for the seventh game of his rookie season. Senior attackman Nick Aponte (2g, 1a), sophomore attackman Grant Ament (2g, 2a) and senior Mike Sutton (2g) each logged a pair of goals, extending their point streaks to 43, 26 and 21 games in a row, respectively.

Junior Ryan Keenan and sophomore Nick Spillane both found the back of the net for the Nittany Lions as a part of the second midfield line. Keenan added an assist for his fifth multi-point game of the season. Senior midfielder Dan Craig added an assist as well.

On the defensive end, the Nittany Lions forced four turnovers, with a pair from sophomore defender Chris Sabia while sophomore midfielder Kevin Fox and redshirt-senior midfielder Drake Kreinz added one each. Freshman goalie Colby Kneese was credited with his first loss of the season, making 10 saves over the duration of the game.

Penn State returns to the field next Saturday, April 13, when the Nittany Lions face conference foe Johns Hopkins (6-3, 1-0 Big Ten), with the first faceoff set for 2 p.m. ET. The game is set for national broadcast on ESPNU.

The Turning Point

The Nittany Lions looked as if they may close the gap in the third, with O’Keefe burying a shot with 6:01 left to play in the third. A goal from Maryland’s Connor Kelly with 2:52 remaining started a 3-0 Maryland run, putting the game out of reach.

Difference Makers

Penn State

·Mac O’Keefe – The Penn State rookie led Penn State’s attack in goals scored, freeing his hands and finding the back of the net three times for the Nittany Lions.

·Grant Ament – Ament led Penn State’s point production, scoring a pair of goals on his own while finding Sutton and O’Keefe for a pair of assists.

·Grant Ament – The senior captain posted a pair of goals and an assist against the Terrapins, logging his 60th career assist – one shy of tying 10th most in program history.

Maryland

·Attack Unit – Maryland’s attack trio of Matt Rambo, Colin Heacock and Dylan Maltz combined for 11 points, scoring eight goals and adding three assists.

·Jon Garino, Jr. – After Maryland’s main faceoff man Austin Henningsen was taken out, Garino went 9-11 at the faceoff dot in the second half.

By Quarters

First Quarter

A pair of goals from Kelly and Rambo gave Maryland an early 2-0 lead. Aponte was the first to find the scoreboard for Penn State, dodging from behind the net before the score. Maryland added a pair of scores to go up 4-1 before Sutton responded with a strike from distance. A minute and a half later Craig dished the ball to Ament for his first goal of the game. Maryland won the ensuing faceoff and scored before adding a final tally with just under two minutes to go.

Penn State 3, Maryland 6

Second Quarter

Aponte kicked off the second half with his second score of the game, breaking past the defense for the score. Maryland scored twice before Ament dished the ball to Sutton to cut Penn State’s deficit to two goals. The Terrapins found the back of the net before O’Keefe received a pass from Aponte and scored, extending his scoring streak to 11 games in a row. With 21 seconds left in the half the Terrapins scored for a four-goal lead at the half.

Penn State 6, Maryland 10

Third Quarter

Maryland scored twice to open the third before Keenan sprinted down the alley for his first goal of the day. The tally opened a 3-0 run for the Nittany Lions as Ament and O’Keefe both found paydirt, cutting the Maryland lead to three with just under six minutes left in the third. The Terps added another score with 2:52 to go before the final 15 minutes started.

Penn State 9, Maryland 13

Fourth Quarter

Maryland started the fourth again with a pair of back-to-back scores. Keenan made the most impressive feed of the day, threading the needle to find Spillane in space for the Nittany Lions’ 10th goal of the day. With 3:23 left on the clock Ament capitalized on a turnover by the Terrapins’ keeper, finding O’Keefe at the top of the crease who dumped the ball into the open net. Penn State looked for more chances but could not convert before the final buzzer.

NEWARK, Del. - - With the game tied, 4-4, halfway through the first half, Georgian Court scored the final seven goals to go into the break lead to a 19-11 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (7-6, 6-0 CACC) scored three of the first four goals in the game before the Wildcats (4-9 2-4 CACC) battled back to tie the game, 3-3, with goals from Marisa Parker and Lashay Ross. The teams then traded goals with Gabby Spalt retying the game, 4-4, with 13:05 showing on the clock.

Georgian Court took the lead for good with 8:13 to play in the half and then went on to score six more goals before the break. The Wildcats had two shots during the streak, hitting the post once and having a good opportunity with less than a minute left. Ross had a chance to get the Wildcats back on the board in the final minute, but the ball was knocked out of her stick on her drive to the goal and the Lions scooped up the ball and took it the other, scoring with nine seconds left to go into break 11-4.

The Lions also scored the first two goals of the second half before the Wildcats scored three straight with goals from Shawna Chopko, La’Dae Boykin, and Megan Card to cut the deficit to 13-7 with 24:54 showing on the clock. But the Lions answered with back-to-back goals to retain momentum and the Wildcats couldn’t get any closed than seven goals the rest of the way.

Spalt led the Wildcats with three goals and two assists while Boykin also secured a hat trick while adding one assist. Ross scored twice while Marisa Parker, Card and Chopko each scored one goal. Card led the Wildcats with seven draw controls while Parker, Spalt, Zameria Jones, and goalkeeper Maddie Hurm led the team with three ground balls each. Parker, Mikailla Spencer, and Ross led the team with two caused turnovers each.

The Lions narrowly led the Wildcats in shots, 32-28, while the draw controls were knotted at 16-16. Hurm recorded seven saves for the Wildcats while Amber Neumann made eight saves for the Lions.

The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia University for their final road game of the regular season. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Philadelphia.

SUBJECT: Upset Bid Falls Short for Blue Hens as Delaware Edged by #4/3 Hofstra 11-9 in CAA Men's Lacrosse Battle
DATE: April 8, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware already has one top-five victory on its men’s lacrosse resume this spring, and the opportunity was there for a second one Saturday afternoon at blustery Delaware Stadium.
But the upset bid fell just short as the Blue Hens pulled to within one goal early in the fourth but could not complete the comeback and dropped an 11-9 Colonial Athletic Association decision to still unbeaten and No. 4/3 ranked Hofstra. Last month, the Hens knocked off No. 1 ranked Rutgers 13-9 at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware got three goals each from senior Steve DeLargy and sophomore Andrew Romagnoli (at left) and freshman Crosby Matthews won 15 of 22 faceoffs, but it wasn’t enough as the Hens (7-4, 0-2 CAA) lost their second straight.
Hofstra (10-0, 2-0 CAA), the only remaining unbeaten team in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, continued its best start in school history as Josh Byrne scored four times and dished out an assist and Jimmy Yanes netted three goals and added an assist.
The statistics were nearly identical as Hofstra held slim advantages in both shots (32-31) and groundballs (29-27) and had four less turnovers (13-9) than the Blue Hens. The game was played under constant heavy winds.
“Our guys battled all four quarters, all the way down to the end,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who will retire at the end of this season after 39 years at the helm of the Blue Hens. “Hofstra is an excellent team, really manages the game well, and has some sharpshooters. The effort was certainly there and hopefully we can build on this, rev things up, and win a couple of conference games and get into the tournament.”
Hofstra jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and never trailed the entire game but the Blue Hens were at their heels the entire game. The Pride took a 6-2 halftime lead and went up 7-2 early in the second half, but an inspired Delaware crept back in the game.
DeLargy, Romagnoli, and senior Paul Major each scored goals in the third quarter to cut the lead to 8-5 and the Hens pulled to within one at 8-7 with 12:27 left in the final stanza as Will Hirschmann scored a man-up goa 33 seconds in and Romagnoli netted an unassisted goal just two minutes later.
But the Hens could never get closer as the Pride ran off three straight goals, two by Byrne, to take control at 11-7. Romagnoli and DeLargy each scored again in the final 1:51 of action but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

Fannell, Freibott and Withers recognized for performances in win over Maryland

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Eric Fannell, Freddy Freibott and Jake Withers were all recognized as Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week Tuesday for their contributions in the Buckeyes’ 11-10 overtime win over then-No. 2 Maryland Saturday. Withers was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week for the second week in a row and third time this season, Fannell was tabbed league offensive player of the week for the second time this year and Freibott earned his first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolade.

Fannell, a senior attackman from St. Catherine’s, Ontario, had a career-high five goals in the win. He scored twice in the second quarter and then tallied back-to-back in the third stanza (part of a six goal run that helped the Buckeyes overcome a 7-2 first half deficit). He put the Buckeyes up 9-8 at 7:21 of the fourth quarter. His shot in overtime hit the post, but the rebound went to his teammate for the gamewinner.

Fannell's five goals topped the then-career high four he had the week prior at Michigan. He leads the Buckeyes with 20 assists and 44 points this season, ranking second with 24 goals (all career highs). He has a point in all but one game this season and a goal in all but two outings.

Freibott, from Wilmington, Del., had a career-high eight groundballs in the Buckeyes' victory, helping the Ohio State defense hold the Terps to more than three goals less than their season average. The eight groundballs were the most for a Buckeye who was not a faceoff specialist since 2009.

On the year, Friebott has 40 groundballs, along with six caused turnovers.

A native of Peterborough, Ontario, Withers claimed 18-of-25 faceoffs against Maryland and picked up 10 groundballs. Included in his victories was the draw to open overtime and give the Buckeyes the ball, as they scored the gamewinner on the first possession.

On the year, Withers is third in the NCAA and first in the B1G in faceoff winning percentage (.687). It was his third straight game with 18 or more faceoff wins and his 12th with double digit wins this year. The 10 groundballs marked his third straight game with 10+ and the fifth with 10 or more on the year (second most for a Buckeye since at least 2001 and behind the 11 he had at Michigan the week prior). Withers has a team-high 101 groundballs this year.

The No. 3/4-ranked Buckeyes wrap up the regular season with a game at No. 12/13 Rutgers at noon Saturday in Piscataway, N.J. Ohio State will host the Big Ten Tournament the following week, with the semifinals set for May 4 and the championship May 6. The Buckeyes have clinched a spot in the tournament, which will be held in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Widener Men's Lacrosse Drops Conference Matchup to Messiah on Senior Night

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2017) – The Widener University men’s lacrosse team fell in a pivotal Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth matchup to Messiah by a 12-8 score at a rain-soaked Leslie C. Quick Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Widener, which honored its four-member senior class prior to the contest, got on the board first when freshman Paz Gismondi (West Deptford, N.J.) unleashed a shot that found the back of the net just 1:06 into the contest. The Falcons responded with two straight markers, but Widener regained the lead by closing the quarter with three straight markers. Senior Chris Sanchez (Flanders, N.J.) and Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) each scored during the hot stretch to give the hosts a 4-2 lead at the end of the opening frame.

The visitors sliced away at the deficit in the second quarter and evened the score by getting back-to-back goals from Dylan Gillisse and Joseph Franken. Widener, however, would have the lead at recess by getting a highlight goal from sophomore Brady Franks (State College, Pa.) which was set up by Schulte.

With the rain picking up and reaching pouring levels to start the second half, Messiah came out firing and gained a wave of momentum by going on a pair of 3-0 runs to take control of the contest. Schulte was able to break up the first streak by scoring his second marker of the game which triggered a Messiah penalty directly after the strike, but the Falcons killed it off and took a 10-6 advantage when Hunter Bellows took a pass from Gillisse with 28 seconds remaining in the frame. The deficit would prove to be too much for the Pride to overcome.

Messiah (9-4, MAC Commonwealth 7-0) got a pair of four-point performances from Joseph Franken and Justin Bradley. Franken scored four goals, while Bradley netted three and tallied an assist. Brian Doron scooped up five ground balls and caused a turnover defensively, and Sam Stengel made 12 saves.

Schulte and Gismondi also contributed four-point efforts to lead the way for Widener, which won 16 of the 22 faceoffs to generate extra scoring chances. Schulte had three goals and one assist, while Gismondi netted two goals and added a pair of helpers. Sophomores Bryan Facciani (Pasadena, Md.) and Shane Cook (Lincoln, Pa.) each caused three turnovers on the defensive end, and Cook also picked up six ground balls. Classmate Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) turned away 14 shots and made double-digit saves for the 10th time this season.

Widener (7-7, MAC Commonwealth 4-3), which has already qualified for the upcoming conference tournament, will wrap up the regular season with another pivotal matchup when it travels to face Lycoming on Saturday, Apr. 29 at 1:00 p.m. The Pride will either earn the right to host the first-round game on Monday night with a win or will have to travel to Lycoming again to play the postseason game on the same day with a setback.

James Madison, Elon Advance to CAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship Title Game

TOWSON, Md. (May 5, 2017) – The 2017 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Lacrosse Championship will feature some familiar faces and some new ones as top-seeded James Madison and third-seeded Elon advanced after two overtime thrillers. The Dukes topped fourth-seeded Delaware while the Phoenix knocked off second-seeded Towson tonight at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

NO. 1 JAMES MADISON 11, NO. 4 DELAWARE 10 OT

CAA Player of the YearHaley Warden scored the overtime game-winner to lift top-seeded James Madison (12-6) to an 11-10 victory over fourth-seeded Delaware. The Dukes are headed to their fourth straight appearance in the CAA Championship title game.

Warden’s heroics came in the first sudden victory overtime period after Delaware erased a four-goal deficit late in the second half to force the extra frame.

Delaware began gaining momentum at 27:36 in the second half as Jamie Schwartz buried her 22nd of the year to cut the gap to 7-4. The two teams went goal-for-goal for the next 17 minutes. With 8:30 remaining, Schwartz found a cutting Megan Santoleri who buried her second goal of the game to pull UD within 10-8 and force a JMU timeout. Caroline Farley made it a one-goal contest with 4:14 left to play and Becky Gohsler tied it up with 2:07 left to play.

The No. 19/20 Dukes and the Blue Hens traded goals to start the game as both Elena Romesburg and Gohsler found the back of the cage. Momentum shifted towards JMU as a pair of goals from Kristen Gaudian sparked a 5-0 run that spanned 12 minutes. Santoleri stopped the run at 3:45 with her 18th goal of the year for the Blue Hens to make the score 6-2. The two teams traded goals in the closing minutes of the half as the Dukes took a 7-3 lead into the locker room.

Six different Blue Hens scored, including Farley who had a hat trick. For the Dukes, Gaudian, Romesburg and Leah Monticello had two goals apiece.

In the cage, JMU’s Emily Poelma made six saves while Delaware’s Taylor Carpentier made 12 saves.

NO. 2 TOWSON 9, NO. 3 ELON 10 OT

Junior Stephanie Asher scored the overtime game-winner at third-seeded Elon topped second-seeded Towson, 10-9, in overtime. Asher scored four goals on the night to help the Phoenix to the finals in just their second-ever CAA Championship tournament appearance. The Elon victory snapped a string of six-straight CAA final appearances for the Tigers.

No. 17/18 Towson (12-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 4:05 into the game on a goal by Emily Gillingham. Elon (13-5) responded with back-to-back goals from Asher and Abby Godfrey in the span a 1:11 to take the lead. The lead was short-lived as Carly Tellekamp tied it up at 21:07. Rookie Melissa Birdsell fired back, with her 12th of the season at 19:14. The Tigers tied it up at 14:33 as Natalie Sulmonte put home a pass from senior Samantha Brookhart. It was Brookhart’s 49th assist which tied the CAA single season record. Elon regained the lead moments later on a Nicole Sinacori goal and continued to push with two unanswered goals for a 6-3 halftime lead.

The Tigers came out firing out of the break as Jenna Kerr tucked in a pass from Brookhart at 26:47. Brookhart orchestrated another Tiger goal at 25:16, this time Tellekamp was on the receiving end of the pass to pull Towson within 6-5. Sinacori responded at 21:55 with her second of the night to return the lead to a pair of goals.

Towson continued to chip away, pulling within 7-6 on a goal by Gillingham with 12:35. Brookhart continued her fine work on offense, finding Sulmonte who provided the equalizer at 10:52. Sulmonte set up Gillingham 45 seconds later as the Tigers regained the lead for the first time since the early in the opening stanza. Brookhart got into the scoring action, potting her first goal of the night at 9:55 to push the Towson lead to 9-7. Elon came surging back. Asher scored with 8:42 left while Shannon Horan sent the game to overtime with a goal at 3:20.

Brookhart tallied five assists, breaking the CAA single season record in the process, to finish with a game-high six points. Sulmonte finished with two goals, two assists and nine draw controls.

In the cage, Rachel Ramirez made nine saves in the victory. For Towson, Angie Benson played very well, stopping 12 shots.

Marquette Wins Back-To-Back #BIGEASTmlax Championships, 10-9 Over Providence

Golden Eagles become first No. 4 seed to win the BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship Title

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Marquette Golden Eagles defended their tournament title with another 10-9 victory, this time over the No. 3 seed Providence Friars at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium, winning their second BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship Presented by Jeep in as many years. Marquette became the first No. 4 seed to win a BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship.

Last year in Denver, Marquette won by the same score to win their first ever title.

Providence made its first appearance in the championship title game and acted as hosts to a crowd of 2,398.

BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player Cole Blazer made 11 saves in the victory after posting 12 stops and a goal in Marquette’s 11-8 upset victory over top-seeded and No. 2 Denver in the semifinals. Seniors Grant Preisler, Joe Dunn and Nicholas Eufrasio all joined Blazer on the all-tournament team from Marquette. From Providence, Ryan Schaffer, Jarrod Neumann and Tate Boyce earned all-tournament honors. Boyce had eight saves in Saturday’s loss, 16 in the semifinal victory over second-seeded Villanova.

The Golden Eagles (8-7) had to withstand a furious Providence rally in the waning minutes as the Friars cut what was a three goal Marquette lead to a single goal with 1:25 remaining. After a Providence faceoff victory, Marquette was able to force a turnover, but a failed clear gave the Friars the ball back with a chance to tie.

Marquette’s Eufrasio was called for a push after the failed clear and Providence was unable to capitalize on an extra-man opportunity as time wound down.

Preisler posted his second two-goal game of the tournament to go along with a pair of assists, while Marquette’s Tanner Thomson and Ryan McNamara each also scored a pair for the Golden Eagles.

McNamara’s final goal to put Marquette ahead 10-7 with 4:04 left in regulation proved to be the game winner and was also the 100th tally of his career. That goal capped a three-goal run that pulled Marquette out of a 7-7 tie midway through the fourth quarter.

Schaffer led the Friars (10-7) with a hat trick, while Brendan Kearns notched two goals and a pair of assists in Providence’s first title game appearance.

Providence posted the game’s first two goals and led 2-0 after 15 minutes of play before the Golden Eagles answered with four in a row to lead 4-3 at the half.

Marquette earned the BIG EAST’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship and will await their next opponent in Sunday’s NCAA Selection Show on ESPNU at 9 p.m. ET. Ranked second in the country before this weekend’s championship, Denver will also wait to see if they earn an at-large berth and a potential home game.

Saturday’s title game will be replayed for fans on Tuesday, May 9 at 8 p.m. ET on FS2.

Senior Midfielder picked for All-Star Game

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's lacrosse senior midfielder Jeff George was selected for the 76th Annual USILA/Nike North vs. South All-Star Game. The game will be held at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on the campus of Providence College on Friday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m. George will be on the North Team.

This past season, George set career-highs with 19 goals, 28 points and 15 ground balls. He concluded his career with his first career hat trick in a win over No. 3 Ohio State in the season finale.

FOXBORO, Mass. – The No. 3-seeded Ohio State men's lacrosse team came back from a five-goal third-quarter deficit to top Towson, 11-10, Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes advance to the first national championship game in program history and will take on top-seeded Maryland at 1 p.m. Monday on ESPN2.

Ohio State moves to 16-4 on the season, breaking the program record for wins in a single season first set in 1965.

Ohio State 11, Towson 10 – The Short Version

After allowing the first goal of the game, the Buckeyes responded with a pair midway through the first 15 minutes before the Tigers answered late in the first quarter to knot the score at 2-2. Towson then scored five of the six second-quarter goals and used eight Buckeye turnovers to take a 7-3 lead at halftime. The Tigers scored the first goal coming out of the half to make it an 8-3 game but Ohio State scored five of the six goals the rest of the quarter to cut the Towson lead to 9-8 after three quarters. The Buckeyes opened the fourth with a pair of quick goals by Tre Leclaire and JT Blubaugh before Johnny Pearson notched an insurance goal to put Ohio State up 11-9. Towson got one goal back with less than four minutes remaining but the Buckeyes were able to close out the one-goal victory.

Leclaire, a freshman, had a team-high three goals and four points, while seniors Eric Fannell and Austin Shanks each had two goals and an assist for three points. Senior Jake Withers won 15-of-25 faceoffs and had a game-high 10 groundballs. Senior goalie Tom Carey had 10 saves in the Buckeye cage.

In the First Quarter

The Buckeyes fell behind 1-0 less than five minutes into the game but goals from sophomores Jack Jasinski and Logan Maccani in an eight-second span gave Ohio State a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter. However, Towson answered back with a Jon Mazza goal at the 1:52 mark to knot the score at 2-2 at the end of the first. Carey stopped five shots in the first 15 minutes as Towson held a 10-7 advantage in shots.

In the Second Quarter

Towson’s Joe Seider scored a pair of goals and Ryan Drenner added another in the first three minutes of the second quarter to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead. Leclaire answered with his 46th goal of the season at the 11:21 mark but Drenner responded with his second of the game to regain the three-goal lead with 9:40 remaining in the half. Brian Bolewicki then capped the first-half scoring with a goal off a Mazza assist with 1:20 left to make it a 7-3 Tiger advantage at the midway point. Shots were 15-5 in favor of Towson in the quarter and Carey made four stops.

In the Third Quarter

Seider pushed the Tiger lead to 8-3 at 11:46 of the third but Shanks got the goal right back at 10:34. Leclaire then scored at the 7:19 mark before Shanks added a man-up goal to make it 8-6 at 5:25. A Fannell tally made it a one-goal game at the 4:11 mark and, after a Tyler Young goal for Towson at 2:20, Fannell scored another at 1:50 to make it 9-8 after three quarters of play. The five Buckeye goals in the quarter tied for the most Towson allowed in a quarter all season. Shots were 11-9 in favor of the Buckeyes, with Ohio State holding a 7-3 lead in shots on frame.

In the Fourth Quarter

Leclaire opened the final stanza with his third goal of the game to even the score at 9-9 at the 11:42 mark before Blubaugh gave the Buckeyes the 10-9 lead with a tally at 10:20 (their first lead since the first quarter). Pearson then pushed the Ohio State advantage to 11-9 with 6:10 remaining but Drenner answered with his third of the game to make it an 11-10 contest with less than four minutes left to play. However, the Buckeyes held for the final 3:17 as a Seider shot with 15 seconds remaining sailed wide and Ohio State forced a final turnover to send Ohio State to the first national championship game in program history. Ohio State had 12 shots in the quarter, limiting Towson to six.

Shots and Saves

The Buckeyes were outshot, 40-35, in the game. Carey had 10 saves, his 10th game this season (and seventh in the last eight games) with double-digit saves. Towson’s goalie made six stops.

Faceoffs and Groundballs

Withers won 15 faceoffs, including 10 of 13 in the second half, his 17th game this year with double-digit faceoffs. He has won 267-of-406 faceoffs (.658) on the year. He had 10 groundballs for the ninth time this season and has a career-high 152 on the year. Junior Erik Evans had three groundballs for the Buckeyes. Each team picked up 27 groundballs in the game, with the Buckeyes ahead 17-8 in the second half.
