Men’s Lacrosse Picked As Patriot League Favorites; Herreweyers Leads Offensive Players

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- For the third time in as many years, Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse was picked by Patriot League coaches and sports information personnel as the team to beat in the conference.

The Greyhounds garnered 12 first-place votes and took the top spot in the poll with 122 points, 14 more than the second-place U.S. Naval Academy.

Senior attacker Zach Herreweyers was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and he was joined on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team by junior midfielder Brian Sherlock.

Herreweyers returns to the Greyhounds offensive unit after leading all Patriot League players with 47 goals in 2015. The native of London, Ontario, was seventh in NCAA Division I with 3.13 goals per game, a number that also paced the Patriot League. He recorded hat tricks in nine of the Greyhounds’ 15 games during 2015, and in 26 career games, Herreweyers has scored 66 goals, recording three or more 14 times.

Sherlock has earned All-Patriot League First Team honors after his freshman and sophomore seasons, and he garnered United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America Honorable Mention following the 2015 campaign. The Long Islander was the top goal-scoring midfielder in the Patriot League, registering 29 to go with 19 assists for 48 points last year.

The Greyhounds have been picked to win the Patriot League all three seasons they have been a part of the conference. They took the crown in 2014 and finished fourth last year with an overall record of 7-8.

Head Coach Charley Toomey and his program return eight of 10 starts from a year ago, plus David Manning, a now senior defender who missed the 2015 season due to an injury after starting every game in 2014.

Loyola and Navy led the preseason poll; Colgate University was close behind the Midshipmen in third with 105 points. The U.S. Military Academy checked in at fourth with 85, and Bucknell University was fifth with 70. Boston University (58), Lehigh University (54), College of the Holy Cross (29) and Lafayette College (17) rounded out the poll.

The Greyhounds start their season Saturday, Feb. 13, when they face the University of Virginia. Loyola’s home schedule commences a week later in a local tilt against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, Feb. 20. Patriot League action gets underway seven days later when the Greyhounds host Lafayette College Saturday, Feb. 27.

High Point Named Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Favorite

Coaches also selected 13-player preseason all-conference team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Defending champion High Point was narrowly selected as the favorite to claim the 2016 Southern Conference men’s lacrosse title, as voted by all eight of the league’s coaches. The coaches also voted on a preseason all-conference team for the league’s second season of lacrosse.

High Point nabbed four first-place votes and 46 total points to take the top spot in the poll. The Panthers, who finished last season with a 10-7 mark, had a trio of seniors voted to the preseason all-conference team: attacker Dan Lomas, defenseman Zack Price and midfielder/faceoff specialist Jamie Piluso. Lomas netted a league-high 38 goals last season en route to offensive player of the year honors and was joined by Piluso on last year’s All-SoCon first team.

Richmond garnered four first-place votes and 45 points, only one shy of High Point’s 46, after going 11-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play in 2015. The Spiders placed a league-high five players on the preseason all-conference team. Junior J.P. Forester, an All-SoCon first team selection last year, represents Richmond among the attackers. Two more All-SoCon selections from a year ago – junior Mitch Goldberg and senior Alex Hatem – grabbed spots as midfielders, and reigning defensive player of the year Brendan Hynes was selected as one of the three defensemen. Junior Benny Pugh tied Furman sophomore Reilly McDermott for the preseason goalkeeper slot.

SoCon newcomer Air Force collected 38 points and claimed the No. 3 spot in the preseason poll after finishing last season with an 8-7 record as an independent. Sophomore attacker Chris Walsch represents the Falcons on the preseason all-conference team.

Mercer claimed the fourth spot with 31 points in the preseason poll. Bellarmine, tabbed to finish fifth with 23 points, had three preseason all-conference selections in junior midfielder Tucker Ciessau, senior defenseman Bobby Schmitt and senior Taylor Stuart, who nabbed longstick midfielder recognition.

Furman was picked to finish sixth with 18 points, while Jacksonville and VMI round out the poll with 16 points and seven points, respectively.

The 2016 season opens up on Saturday, Feb. 6, with Air Force, Furman and Mercer all in action against nonconference foes.

Florida Is BIG EAST Preseason Women’s Lacrosse Favorite

Gators place five on Preseason All-BIG EAST Team while Villanova’s Froccaro and Connecticut’s Kwasnowski claim major honors.

NEW YORK – Reigning BIG EAST women’s lacrosse champion Florida was picked to repeat in 2016 in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll which the league announced on Wednesday. The Gators, entering their second season in BIG EAST women’s lacrosse action, earned six first-place votes to edge runner-up Connecticut in the poll. UConn’s Lauren Kwasnowski was tabbed BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while Villanova’s Jackie Froccaro was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Florida totaled 46 points to beat out the Huskies’ 44-point total. UConn collected the remaining two first-place votes, while 2016 BIG EAST Championship host Georgetown was tabbed third with 36 points. Entering its second season in the league, Vanderbilt placed fourth with 31 points, followed by Villanova in fifth (26), Temple in sixth (20), Marquette in seventh (13) and Cincinnati eighth (eight). Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team or players.

The Gators went 15-6 overall and 6-1 in BIG EAST play in 2015, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship. Florida returns four of its top five scorers from that squad, including unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection Mollie Stevens, who scored 43 goals and notched nine assists last season to rank second on the team in points (52). Stevens was one of five preseason all-league selections for the Gators, with Stevens, Caroline Fitzgerald and Devon Schneider uncontested picks. Taylor Bresnahan and Sammi Burgess were also Preseason All-BIG EAST honorees. Florida averaged over 17 goals per game during their first season as an associate member of the BIG EAST, limiting opponents to just over five goals per game.

Florida graduated Tewaaraton Award Finalist Shannon Gilroy, who not only led the BIG EAST in points and goals, but finished in the top five nationally in both categories. Gilroy was unanimously selected BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year in 2015, while Fitzgerald, Schneider and Stevens were also All-BIG EAST First Team picks.

Kwasnowski earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2015 after anchoring the UConn defense which finished the year ranked fourth in the nation in caused turnovers (10.22), with Kwasnowski ranking 10th among all Division I players at 1.94 per game. The senior earned All-America Second Team plaudits and was invited to the U.S. National Team tryouts at season’s end.

The Huskies advanced to the BIG EAST Championship title game for the first time last season, finishing the year with an 11-7 overall record and 5-2 in league play. Connecticut was the only team to hand the Gators a loss in league play last season, while its two conference losses were by one goal apiece. The Huskies listed second to Florida in goals per game and goals against average and welcome back a strong core from that squad, including Kwasnowski, and fellow unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selections Katherine Finkelston and Shannon Nee. Grace Nolan also claimed preseason honors. Finkelston ranked third in the league with 2.22 goals per game while Nee’s .471 save percentage ranked second.

Backed by unanimous preseason all-league selection Kristen Bandos and fellow honoree Corinne Etchison, Georgetown was picked to finish third in the BIG EAST. In total, the Hoyas return eight starters and 21 letterwinners from the 2015 team which went 7-10 overall and shared the BIG EAST regular-season title with Florida following a 6-1 finish to league play. Georgetown missed out on the national postseason last year after back-to-back appearances at the NCAAs, and will aim to earn its 15th NCAA bid overall in 2016. Bandos and Etchison ranked third and fourth on the team in points last season, with Bandos leading all Hoyas with 29 goals scored.

Vanderbilt went 4-3 during its first season of BIG EAST play in 2015, totaling a 7-9 record overall, most notably dealing UConn a double-overtime setback. Three Commodores were voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, including the league’s No. 3 points-earner last season, Mallory Schonk. Schonk averaged 3.25 points per game, scoring 32 goals and registering 20 assists over 16 games played. Vandy returns its top seven scorers from 2015, with assists leader Jill Doherty (23) and key midfielder Alexa Kunowsky joining Schonk on the preseason all-league squad.

BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Jackie Froccaro led Villanova to its first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship in 2015 after the Wildcats finished in a tie for fourth place with Vanderbilt at 4-3. Froccaro’s goals and points averages ranked second to only Gilroy last season, with the Villanova attacker averaging 2.88 goals and 3.35 points per contest. Her 4.47 draw controls per game was tops among all BIG EAST players and ranked 16th nationally. Along with Froccaro, the Wildcats return 11 starters from last season’s team which went 9-8 overall, its first winning season since joining the BIG EAST. Defensive specialist Sam Scarfogliero joined Froccaro on the preseason all-league team, finishing 2015 with team highs of 28 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls (fifth in the BIG EAST).

Nicole Tiernan represented Temple, which was slated sixth in the poll, on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Tiernan’s 2.19 goals per game average ranked fourth in the conference last year, leading the Owls to a 10-6 overall record while going 2-5 in league games. Temple opened the year winning seven of its first eight before cooling off, but remained among the highest scoring teams in the league at 10.06 goals per game. The Owls’ top-six scorers from 2015 return this season, as well as season goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik.

Marquette (seventh) and Cincinnati (eighth) rounded out the coaches’ poll. MU’s Elizabeth Goslee, a mainstay on the Golden Eagle defense, was voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Goslee totaled 30 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers last season, ranking fourth in the conference with a 1.76 CT average. She is one of 10 starters back for Marquette this season. MU went 5-12 overall and 1-6 in league play, while Cincinnati posted a 2-15 mark and 0-7 in BIG EAST games. Courtney Curtis leads the returning class for the Bearcats after scoring 37 goals in 2015 to rank fifth in the BIG EAST.

Scott Bieda, Adam Charalambides Win Big Ten Weekly Awards

Bieda named Offensive Player of the Week, Charalambides named Freshman of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 16, 2016) – After record-breaking games in the season-opening win, two Rutgers student-athletes earned weekly award recognition from the Big Ten Conference Tuesday. Senior captain Scott Bieda was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, while redshirt freshman attacker Adam Charalambides was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Bieda set a career-high in points (nine), and tied a career-high in goals (five) in the 19-11 victory over St. John’s, as he totaled five goals, four assists and three ground balls. Bieda's nine points was sixth on Rutgers’ all-time single game points list. His nine points were the most points scored in a game by a Rutgers player since at least 2006.

Currently, the Bridgewater, N.J. native ranks first in the NCAA in points per game and second in the NCAA in assists per game. He is one of only two players in the NCAA with a 9 point game this season.

Bieda is the first Rutgers player to earn Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. He was the last RU player to earn a conference Offensive Player of the Week recognition when he was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on April 28, 2014 after a five-point performance in a win over Georgetown.

Charalambides made a big impact in his career debut, scoring six goals and adding an assist. The Georgetown, Ontario native was the first Rutgers freshman to score at least six goals in a game since 1984. He was only the fourth ever Rutgers freshman to score at least six goals in a game and the first ever Rutgers freshman to score that many in their first career game. His six goals were tied as the 5th most goals ever scored in a single game by a Rutgers player. This marked the first time a Rutgers player notched six goals in a game since Kory Kelly did it on March 16,2010.

Charalambides leads the nation with six goals per game and is third in the nation (second in the Big Ten behind Bieda) with seven points per game. He is the third different Rutgers player to earn a Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor. Jules Heningburg and Chad Toliver were each recognized last season.

Rutgers will be on the road for their next game, a 2:30 p.m. start Saturday at Army West Point. The game will be live-streamed for free on PatriotLeague.tv.

Bracket - http://theacc.co/MLAX16bracket

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke will enter the 2016 ACC Men’s Lacrosse Championship as the No. 3 seed and will take on second-seed Notre Dame in the semifinal Friday, April 29 in Kennesaw, Ga. Faceoff is set for 8:30 p.m., at Fifth Third Bank on ESPNU.

The winners of the two semifinal games will meet in the ACC Championship game on Sunday, May 1 at Noon, which will be broadcast on ESPNU/WatchESPN. Single day tickets start at $20, while all-session books start at $50.

The No. 13 Blue Devils are 9-6 overall and finished ACC play with a 2-2 record with wins over Syracuse and Virginia. No. 1 Notre Dame is 9-2 overall and 3-1 against ACC foes after losing to No. 16 North Carolina, 17-15, in the finale.

Notre Dame defeated Duke 8-6 in the regular season, holding Duke to just one fourth-quarter goal en route to the victory.

This will mark the second straight season the Blue Devils will meet the Fighting Irish in the ACC Championship, beating Notre Dame 13-8 in the 2015 semifinal.

Duke owns seven ACC Championship titles since the postseason tournament started in 1989. Four of those seven have come under John Danowski with the last one being in 2012. The Blue Devils are 21-19 all-time in the ACC Tournament and 0-4 as the No. 3 seed.

After losing three of four in a three-week span, the Blue Devils rebounded in resounding fashion, cruising past Virginia 14-8 and dominating No. 15 Marquette 16-1 Friday night. The single goal allowed was the fewest since a 16-1 win over Bellarmine Feb. 28, 2006. It also was the largest margin of victory against a ranked team since the 17-2 win over No. 3 Virginia in 2005.

In the win over the Golden Eagles, senior midfielder Myles Jones recorded two goals and an assist to become the first Division I lacrosse midfielder to record 100 career goals and 100 career assists. Justin Guterding leads the offense with 63 points, while Jones has 61. Deemer Class is tops in goals with 42.

The Blue Devils’ defense has allowed just 15 goals in their past three outings for a 5.67 goals against average. Goaltender Danny Fowler sports an impressive 6.36 goals against average and a .646 save percentage in that span. He is averaging 10.3 saves per game in the stretch.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Coaching Legend Bob Shillinglaw Announces Retirement Following 2017 Season

DATE:  February 2, 2017

NEWARK, Del. -- Bob Shillinglaw, who has enjoyed one of the greatest coaching careers in the history of NCAA men’s lacrosse, compiling 327 wins, leading the Blue Hens to 16 conference championships, and six NCAA Tournament appearances, announced Thursday that he will retire following the 2017 season.

Shillinglaw, who will turn 65 in March, began his career with the Blue Hens in 1979 and will commence his 39th season at UD and his 42nd season overall as a head coach when Delaware hosts Bucknell in the season opener next Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.

“Anyone who knows me knows that Delaware Lacrosse is my passion,” said Shillinglaw. “Representing the program, the University, and the alums is an honor, and besides my wife and three daughters, it is the most important thing in my life. While at this time this is the best decision for my family, I will continue to give 150 percent this season to provide this year's team and their families with the best experience and remain committed to working hard for the future of Delaware Lacrosse.”

The second longest tenured head coach in the history of collegiate men’s lacrosse and in the annals of Delaware athletics, Shillinglaw built a strong legacy of championship teams, All-American players, and successful alumni over a highlight-filled career.

“Coach Shillinglaw’s contributions and commitment to this University, to Blue Hens Athletics, to the lacrosse program, and to the sport have been truly extraordinary,” said Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak. “His positive impact as a mentor to hundreds of highly successful young men over four decades can’t be overstated. He is Delaware Lacrosse and so many owe him a debt of gratitude for the legacy he has built and the first-class manner in which he guided this program. We are excited for both Bob and his family as he begins this next chapter in his life. Delaware lacrosse will always hold special importance to him and we welcome his continued involvement and commitment to the program and Delaware Athletics as whole.”

No person in the history of college lacrosse has coached more games than Shillinglaw, who has been at the helm of 639 contests over 41 seasons, 129 more than No. 2 Jack Emmer who coached 510 games in 1970-2005. His 41 seasons as a head coach ranks tied for No. 2 all-time in NCAA history, trailing only current MIT head coach Walt Alessi, who begins his 43rd season in 2017. Glenn Thiel served 41 seasons as a head coach in 1970-2010 at Virginia and Penn State. At Delaware, only the late C. Roy "Doc" Rylander, who guided the UD tennis teams for 41 years in 1952-93, served longer.

One of just seven coaches in NCAA Division I history to win 250 games or more at one school, Shillinglaw reached the mark with a win over Saint Joseph's in the 2009 season opener. He won his 300th game at Delaware in 2016 when the Blue Hens knocked off Manhattan 6-5 on March 8, 2016.

Shillinglaw’s remarkable career has seen him capture 327 victories, including 303 at Delaware, to rank him No. 10 on the all-time win list and No. 4 among active Division I head coaches behind only Duke’s John Danowski, Denver’s Bill Tierney, and Bryant’s Mike Pressler.

The slate includes 16 conference championships in four different leagues and six NCAA Tournament appearances, most notably in 2007 when Delaware advanced to its first and only NCAA Final Four appearance. Delaware advanced that year with wins over then defending national champion Virginia and UMBC before falling to Johns Hopkins in the national semifinal game before an NCAA record crowd of 52,004 at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. Delaware also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1983, 1999, 2005, 2010, and 2011.

He has posted a career record of 124-74 (.626) in conference play, led his teams to seven conference titles in his first eight seasons, and guided the team to 10 or more victories 11 times, including a four-year run 2004-07 in which Delaware was an impressive 46-23 overall.

Along the way he was named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Coach of the Year twice (1979 and 1999), conference Coach of the Year five times, coached 19 All-Americans, eight conference players of the year, four conference rookies of the year, 105 all-conference selections, and six members of the UD Athletics Hall of Fame.

He has also sent numerous players to the professional leagues, including John Grant, Jordan Hall, and Curtis Dickson, each of whom are considered among the top players in the world. Grant, for years one of the top players in the history of both Major League Lacrosse (outdoor) and the National Lacrosse League (indoor), was named the USILA national college player of the year in 1999 and Dickson was runner-up for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the top college men’s lacrosse player in the nation in 2010. In addition, UD Athletics Hall of Famers Alex Smith and Steve Shaw still rank among the all-time great faceoff specialists in NCAA history.

A native of Severna Park, Md., Shillinglaw was a standout at the University of North Carolina, served as team captain as a senior, and was a 1974 Phi Beta Kappa graduate. Before coming to Delaware, he was 24-17 in three years as head coach at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He earned his master's degree from Boston University in 1978.

He arrived at Delaware in 1979, taking over for Jim Grube as just the eighth coach in UD history. He has twice been selected to the coaching staff of the North-South Lacrosse Senior All-Star Classic, serving as South Team head coach in 1997 and as an assistant in 1981. He is a past president of the USLCA and is actively involved in the All-America Advisory Board and the NCAA Rules and Equipment Committee, and formerly with the USILA Top 20 Coaches Poll. He presently serves on the Regional Advisory Ranking Committee for NCAA DI Men's Lacrosse Tournament selection and on the Tewaaraton Award Selection Committee for Mens’ Lacrosse.

An assistant professor at Delaware, he has published numerous articles in athletic journals as well as lectured at various coaching clinics. Shillinglaw will continue to stay involved with the University of Delaware and will work with alumni relations as well as other university and athletic department efforts across campus.

He resides with his wife, Tina, in Elkton, Md. They have three grown daughters.

SUBJECT: Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Loses Heartbreaker in Season Opener with 14-13 Setback to Bucknell
DATE:  February 4, 2017
NEWARK, Del. -
- It didn’t take long for heartbreak to find the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team Saturday afternoon. The silver lining is that it brought about a ton of optimism for the remainder of the season.
After forging ahead to a five-goal lead midway through the third quarter, the Blue Hens found goals tough to come by the rest of the game and dropped a tough 14-13 nail-biter to Bucknell in the season opener for both teams at Delaware Stadium.
Bucknell (1-0) scored the first four goals of the final stanza to take the lead and had to hold off a strong comeback attempt by Delaware (0-1) in the final minutes to escape with the victory. The Bison got off 54 shots on the day and got big efforts from Sean O’Brien with six goals, Reed Malas with three goals and two assists, and Will Sands with two goals and five assists.
Delaware’s offense, which averaged just 8.16 goals per game a year ago, was impressive for the first three quarters as the Hens built leads of 6-4 after the first quarter and 9-6 at halftime and built its biggest lead at 11-6 with 7:57 left in third quarter before the Bison mounted their comeback. The Hens managed just two goals over the final 23 minutes of action.
Three different Blue Hens notched hat tricks as sophomore Andrew Romagnoli scored four times and dished out an assist, sophomore Joe Eisele netted a career-high three goals, and freshman Charlie Kitchen scored four times and dished out two assists in his collegiate debut.
“Little things make all the difference in the world, we just have to get better as some finer things on both sides of the ball,” said an optimistic Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw following the game. “It’s a game of spurts. I love our guys, they work their tails off. This has been a very rewarding preseason and our guys put a lot of effort into it. They were disappointed to have the opportunity slip away today so we will learn from this experience. One down, lets keep going. We’ll bounce back Monday and be ready to go next week.”
Bucknell’s O’Brien scored three times in the final stanza, including a goal with 12:22 left to tie the score at 12-12 and another tally with 2:48 left that put the Bison up 14-12. Delaware battled back as Eisele scored his third goal of the game with 1:14 left after grabbing his own rebound. The Hens had two chances to score in the final seconds but they turned the ball over with six seconds left and got the ball back but couldn’t get a shot off.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware was outshot 54-35 but got 16 off in the opening quarter on the way to the 6-4 lead
• Despite the high score, it was a clean game as Bucknell had just six turnovers and the Hens committed just nine
• Bucknell, which earned votes in the preseason USILA Coaches Poll, is coming off a 10-win season in 2016 and has posted nine winning seasons in the last 10
• Delaware is looking to bounce back after consecutive five-win seasons
• Shillinglaw announced Thursday that he will retire following the 2017 season. He is currently in his 39th season at Delaware and his 42nd overall as a college head coach
• Delaware’s 13 goals were the most on opening day since a 19-6 win over Detroit Mercy in 2012
• Kitchen, a freshman attack from Marlton, N.J. (St. Augustine Prep), became the first UD freshman to score four goals in his collegiate debut
