Title Terps! Undefeated Maryland Captures B1G Title

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team earned the inaugural Big Ten Championship with a 13-10 win over No. 8 Penn State Thursday evening.

The Terps closed the 2015 regular season with a 17-0 record and a 5-0 mark in Big Ten play. Maryland claimed the regular-season title in the first year of Big Ten lacrosse and the Terrapins’ first year in the conference.

“I thought Penn State fought really hard,” said head coach Cathy Reese. “I give them a lot of credit. It was a game of runs, for sure. We found a way to pull it out, so I’m really proud of our team’s effort. It’s all new territory for us; it’s our first season in the Big Ten, so I’m proud of how hard our team has worked to get to this point.”

Taylor Cummings led the team across the field with four goals, four ground balls, 10 draw controls and four caused turnovers. Kristen Lamon and Zoe Stukenberg each tallied hat tricks while Nadine Hadnagy caused four turnovers.

Cummings started the Terps off with an early lead as she won the first two draw controls and scored twice within the first 46 seconds of the game. Lamon and Stukenberg each scored twice as Maryland took a 6-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game.

After a Nittany Lion goal at 18:58, Lamon responded less than a minute later to complete her hat trick. After two more Penn State goals, Whittle notched one on a free-position shot with five minutes left in the half. The Terps took an 8-3 lead into halftime.

The Nittany Lions came out strong in the second half as they rattled off four unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes to cut Maryland’s lead to one goal. Cummings scored twice within a minute and Kelly McPartland added an 8-meter goal as the Terps gained some breaking space back.

Maryland and Penn State traded goals and opportunities for the remainder of the game. Stukenberg and Taylor Hensh each scored, and the Terps took the 13-10 win.

Goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick made six saves and picked up two ground balls in the win.

The Terps held advantages in shots (34-20) and draw controls (16-9). Maryland went 4-for-9 on free-position shots while holding the Nittany Lions to 0-for-4.

Maryland is currently on a 27-game win streak dating back to April 5, 2014. This is the Terps’ third consecutive regular-season conference title.

Maryland will play in the inaugural Big Ten Women’s Lacrosse Tournament next week. The top-seeded Terps will take on the winner of the No. 4/5-seed game on May 1 at 5:30 p.m. The semifinal game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

#10 Brown Beats Dartmouth, 17-8, Earns Share of Ivy League Title, Hosts Ivy Tournament

Hanover, N.H. - Needing a win to secure an Ivy League Playoff berth, Brown sophomore Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY) scored five goals to lead the 10th-ranked Bears to a 17-8 win over Dartmouth. Brown’s win over the Big Green, coupled with Cornell’s 15-10 victory over Princeton, gives the Bears a share of the Ivy League Championship and the number one seed in the Ivy League Tournament which will be held at Brown’s Stevenson Field on May 1 and 3.

Brown finishes with an overall record of 12-3, 4-2 in the Ivy League, sharing the Ivy title with at least Princeton (4-2) and Cornell (4-2). Yale can also gain a share of the title with a win over Harvard later this afternoon. Dartmouth falls to 5-8, 1-5 Ivy with the loss.

The semifinal pairings for the Ivy league Tournament are also set, with Brown hosting Yale on Friday, May 1 at 8pm, preceded by Cornell vs. Princeton at 5pm. Both games will be televised on ESPN3. The Ivy Championship game will be held on Sunday, May 3 at Stevenson Field, starting at 12 noon on ESPNU.

With five goals and two assists, Molloy moved into second place in Brown single season goals, now with 58 goals for the season, passing the mark of 57 goals by Oliver Marti in 1992. He is just one goal short of Andy Towers’ all-time record of 59 goals in 1991.

Brown also a strong showing from junior Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD), who netted three goals, and juniors Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) and Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY), who netted two goals each.

Bears’ junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY), last week’s NCAA Defensive Player of the Week, was brilliant once again, making 10 of his 15 saves in the opening 30 minutes.

Dartmouth was paced by Jack Korzelius, Phil Hession and Adam Fishman, who scored two goals each.

Goals by Caputo and Molloy gave the Bears a 2-0 lead early in the opening quarter, but the Big Green came back to tie the game, 2-2, on scores by Korzelius and Hession midway through the quarter.

Blynn’s goal gave Brown the lead, 3-2, but Fishman quickly responded for Dartmouth to tie the game, 3-3.

Molloy’s goal with 2:37 remaining in the opening quarter gave Brown the lead for good, 4-3, after one quarter.

Brown’s defense held the Big Green scoreless in the second quarter, while its offense extended the Bears’ lead to 8-3 on goals by Caputo, Bellistri , sophomore AJ Lucchese (Sudbury, MA) and Molloy with 55 seconds left.

An evenly played third quarter had senior Tim Jacob, sophomore Alec Tulett (Toronto, Ontario), and Blynn score once each and Molly scoring twice to pull ahead, 13-7 after three quarters.

Duke Downs Notre Dame, 13-8

Blue Devils survive fourth quarter rally to advance to Sunday’s championship

PHILADELPHIA – Fourth-seeded Duke jumped out to a big lead and withstood a late comeback attempt to defeat top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Notre Dame, 13-8, Friday night in the semifinals of the 2015 ACC Men’s Lacrosse Championship at PPL Park.

Case Matheis led the way for Duke with four goals on seven shots, with Justin Guterding adding three goals in a rematch of the 2014 NCAA National Championship game. With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 11-4 and avenged a 15-10 regular season loss to the Irish on April 4.

“It’s awesome,” said Matheis on reaching the championship game. “In my first two years we lost in the semis. Those games are turning points in that they were losses. This time we won and it’s another turning point in building our confidence and building our team dynamic.”

After Duke withstood an early barrage from Notre Dame to start the contest, the two teams were held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time this season.

The Blue Devils came out firing to start the second quarter. Matheis scored 41 seconds after the break, followed by one from Kyle Keenan just over a minute later. Matheis quickly added his second of the game to give Duke a 3-0 lead 3:19 into the quarter.

Nick Ossello got the Irish on the board with 8:58 remaining in the half. Matt Kavanagh found Ossello slashing through the Duke defense, and the senior bounced a shot past goalkeeper Danny Fowler.

Goals from Myles Jones and Justin Guterding gave Duke a 5-1 lead going into halftime.

The Blue Devils opened the third quarter with a five-goal run to break the game open. Jack Bruckner started the run, followed by the third of the game for Matheis. Keenan, Guterding, and Will Haus all found the back of the net to push the lead to 10-1 in favor of Duke before Mikey Wynne ended the drought for Notre Dame.

After Duke’s Matheis scored his fourth of the evening with 12:04 remaining to push the lead to 12-2, Notre Dame’s offense got rolling. Sergio Perkovic, Jack Near, Will Corrigan, and Ossello scored four times within 3:08 to bring the Irish to within six.

Another tally from Perkovic and a goal by Matt Kavanagh made it 12-8 with 4:14 remaining. The Irish then went on a fulltime extra man opportunity with a chance to draw closer late, but two big saves from Fowler and a goal from Guterding sealed the victory for the Blue Devils.

With the loss, Notre Dame fell to 9-2 and will await news on a bid to the NCAA Championship.

“I think early in the game we had about five great chances and came up empty on those,” said Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan. “We just didn’t play good offense after that for an extended period of time.”

Notre Dame outshot Duke 38-32, while the Blue Devils held a 44-30 edge in ground balls. Kyle Rowe was 14-of-19 on faceoffs the Duke.

Fowler (4-2) made 12 saves in net in the win for Duke, while Shane Doss (8-2) stopped five shots in the loss.

QUOTES

Duke Head Coach John Danowski

On the team’s improvement…

“We are probably as healthy as we have been all year, and so the combination of groups and individuals getting better. This is game number seven that Case Matheis, Justin Guterding and Jack Bruckener are playing together. You can see the look for each other and they play well together. Defensively, we are kind of mixing and matching, this is Danny Fowler’s fifth game as a starter. He was a redshirt freshman and the first game of his career was North Carolina, and then it was Notre Dame, then Virginia. So I think there is combination of those things, the experience we are getting and that we are getting a bit healthier.”

On the play of Danny Fowler…

“Danny is playing goalie in a modern age. It’s not easy in this conference. There are such dynamic players. Notre Dame has such great players, so you are never quite sure if it is the goalies fault or if it’s your defense, or if you just have to tip your cap to your opponent at times. Danny certainly looked like a big time veteran goalie today.”

Duke Junior Attacker Case Matheis

On being back in the ACC Championship Game…

“It’s awesome. This is my first experience actually going to the ACC final. In my first two years we lost in the semis. Those games are turning points in that they were losses. This time we won and it’s another turning point in building our confidence and building our team dynamic.”

On Duke peaking late and improvement…

“This team has improved a lot. Coach Danowski stresses the youth in our team, especially our defense. We have a lot of sophomores, a couple freshmen and a few seniors sprinkled in, a couple freshmen in the mix. As far as our defense goes, this is the best I’ve ever seen them play today. The youth getting experience and our offense is starting to gel. We are all just starting to play together and get to know each other really well.”

On the 10-1 lead being unexpected…

“I don’t think it was unexpected as we always have confidence in ourselves. It was more a testament to our defense. It was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter and our defense still had confidence going forward we were going to play well. We just kept playing hard. It was a total team we. I don’t think anyone is surprised. We expect to play Duke Lacrosse and score goals.”

On ND’s defense and what was the turning point in the second quarter

“Notre Dame is a great defensive team. We were getting looks in the first quarter, we just had some turnovers. We knew at some point a goal or two would fall through and we would be able to build off that. It just happened for us in the second quarter. I can’t really put a word to it. We just played hard.”

Duke Sophomore Goalkeeper Danny Fowler

On Duke’s defense and him starting late

I think all of us have improved. The defense had a bit of head start because I came in later, but just getting more experience each and every game. The college game is different, so I’m still adjusting to it a little bit. Every game I feel more and more confident. Defensively you can tell as no one is the same as the start of the season. We are coached very well and everyone has improved.”

On Notre Dame’s late rush

“When I’m making saves, I’m usually not thinking too much. It’s when I’m thinking too much is when I’m not making saves. At the end I let in a bunch in a row. We need some stops and we were able to stop the bleeding.”

Notre Dame Head Coach Kevin Corrigan

Opening Statement

“I don’t think we played well at all. Give Duke a lot of credit. I think early in the game we had about five great chances and came up empty on those. We just didn’t play good offense after that for an extended period of time. That’s on me. We did not come as well prepared as we needed to be today. We got beat by a team that played very well.”

On the team being stunned being down 10-1 …

“You would have to ask them that. My focus at that point is making the next play. You aren’t going to come back in a nine-point play, so it is just about making the next play. I think that was our focus, but we sure didn’t do a good job for a long period of time.”

On the offense not playing well

“I thought we had some sloppy turnovers. I thought we had some guys forcing things that just weren’t there. We played as though it was going to be easy. It wasn’t easy, we didn’t expect it to be. You don’t play a top six team and expect it to be easy. But that’s what it looked like. You can call it impatience. You can call it lack of good judgement. In plays we tried to make, we just forced too many things an gave a way too many possessions.”

Syracuse Tops North Carolina, 9-8

Orange advance to Sunday’s championship to face Duke

PHILADELPHIA – Kevin Rice scored the game-winning goal with 1:48 remaining to give third-seeded Syracuse a 9-8 win over second-seeded North Carolina in the second semifinal of the 2015 ACC Men’s Lacrosse Championship at PPL Park.

Rice held the ball behind the net, took it to his right, and snuck it past North Carolina goalkeeper Kieran Burke for his 24th of the season and the game winner.

“Our defense was keeping us in it and keeping it tight,” said Rice. “Bob [Wardwell] played outstanding and at the end, we just ended up getting it done. Their defender went to my left side, so I pushed to the right and was able to get it in there.”

With the victory, Syracuse improves to 10-2 and advances to the ACC title game for the second straight year where it will face Duke Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.

“Both teams played really hard,” said Syracuse head coach John Desko. “We were fortunate to come out with the win so we can go on and play Duke on Sunday. We are feeling good about the win tonight, enjoy it, and will prepare for the Blue Devils.”

Nicky Galasso led the way for the Orange, posting his fifth hat trick of the year and third in the last four games. The former Tar Heel scored the first two of the contest and then found the back of the net with 1:20 remaining in the second quarter to send the game to halftime tied at 5-5.

Syracuse scored three straight goals in just over five minutes to start the second half. Randy Staats, Dylan Donahue, and Henry Schoonmaker all tallied goals to give the Orange an 8-5 lead.

Duncan Hutchins scored his fifth of the season for the Tar Heels midway through the third quarter, and then Chad Tutton scored twice within two minutes to tie the game up at 8-8 with 11:12 remaining in the contest.

After battling back and forth through the final quarter, Rice notched his second of the game to send the Orange home a winner.

“Kieran Burke was outstanding in the cage and I thought our defense stepped up and had one of their better games of the year forcing perimeter shots and shots that Kieran made,” said North Carolina head coach Joe Breschi. “I thought our man-down was great. Our transition game was solid, but I don’t think we quite had that chemistry offensively we have had recently, and I credit Syracuse.”

Syracuse outshot North Carolina 36-32, while the Tar Heels held a 25-21 edge in ground balls. Ben Williams won 14-of-21 faceoffs for the Orange.

Bobby Wardwell (10-2) made 14 saves for Syracuse in the win, including seven stops in the third quarter. Burke (7-3) had 13 saves in the loss.

QUOTES

Syracuse

Head Coach John Desko

Opening Statement

“Well we haven’t played at Carolina for 20-some years and then this year we play them twice. It was a couple of great games. It was a good game down in Chapel Hill and a great game here this evening. Both teams played really hard. We were fortunate to come out with the win so we can go on and play Duke on Sunday. We are feeling good about the win tonight, enjoy it, and will prepare for the Blue Devils.”

On the play in the fourth quarter…

“That whole fourth quarter was back and forth. Teams were taking shots. I thought their goaltender made some great saves and Bobby made some great saves for us. I thought the whole fourth quarter, 10 minutes to go, was just a rollercoaster. No one was really scoring, so it felt like whoever was going to get the next goal was going to win the game. Fortunately, Kevin stuck that in for us.”

Senior attackman Kevin Rice

On the offense…

“Their goalie was playing pretty well, but we were playing pretty poor offensively throughout the game. Our defense was keeping us in it and keeping it tight. Bob played outstanding and at the end, we just ended up getting it done. Their defender went to my left side, so I pushed to the right and was able to get it in there.”

“We talk about pace a lot and the speed at which we go with our dodges. We were forcing it too early in the game. The crowd was pretty loud and it was a night game. You don’t get too many of those. It was a nice atmosphere and I think we sort of got caught up in it. We were going a little bit too fast, but fortunately we were able to make a play when we needed to and the defense got the stops it needed to.”

On it being nice to not be down early…

“We talked about it all week. The book on us is that we can’t play well on the road. We wanted to answer those critics. I thought defensively we were great. We only gave up a goal or two in the first quarter, which helps the offense when you know you are getting stops and Ben is winning faceoffs.”

North Carolina

Head Coach Joe Breschi

Opening Statement

“I thought it was a heck of a lacrosse game. I thought our guys played really hard across the board. Just statistically, Kieran Burke was outstanding in the cage and I thought our defense stepped up and had one of their better games of the year forcing perimeter shots and shots that Kieran made. I thought our man-down was great. Our transition game was solid, but I don’t think we quite had that chemistry offensively we have had recently, and I credit Syracuse. They played terrific on 67 percent of the faceoffs as their faceoff guy is a solid guy. But I thought all in all it was a great effort by our guys. I’m really proud of our effort. I’m disappointed in the loss, but wish Syracuse luck.”

On the tempo of the game…

“I think the big there is that we both know a lot about each other having played two weeks ago. So I think that was part of it. Wardwell making seven saves third quarter was huge. I thought we had some great opportunities there and he came up big. Burke was so good in the cage with 13 saves. I thought it was a great lacrosse game. I think we know each other well and each other’s tendencies after playing a full game down in Chapel Hill. I think that’s why the score was a little bit lower this time around.”

On preparing for a team the second time around…

“It’s been six weeks of played six straight top seven teams. It’s a gauntlet no matter who you play. We watch a ton of film. These guys are well prepared. We know the tendencies. I thought the defenses on both sides were excellent. I credit their adjustments.”

On the clear at the end …

“We were offsides. We had four failed clears. Last time we played them, we were 19-19, so four failed clears resulted in two goals. Just the fundamentals and attention to detail.”

Junior goalie Kieran Burke

On the play Kevin Rice in the fourth quarter…

“It’s tough. It was a little miscommunication between me and Bailey, but we have a long way to go. It was my fault on the play. It’s tough for him to score the game-winning goal.”

Senior midfielder Chad Tutton

On the tempo of the game…

“It’s tough when you have a slow start. You have to work that much harder as the game goes on to get back into it. I thought we did a good job as the game went on. Obviously, we could have done some things better – we had four failed clears and they had two goals on those failed clears. It’s tough.”

“Today was a great team effort and a great way to end our regular season,” said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. “Our whole team fought from top to bottom and we look forward to carrying this into next week’s Big Ten Tournament at High Point Solutions Stadium.”

Michigan fought back after facing a 4-1 deficit to overtake the Scarlet Knights, 6-4, at the 19:31 mark of the second half. But a three-goal Scarlet Knight run to close the game secured the historic win at Michigan Stadium, as redshirt senior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) scored the game-winner with 4:07 remaining.

Turturro tallied two of Rutgers’ three goals down the stretch, the first from senior Jenny Vlahos (Manhasset, N.Y.) to cut the Wolverine lead to 6-5 with 16:57 remaining in regulation. Turturro received the feed along the right of the arc and went behind the back for the highlight-reel finish.

More than eight minutes later, Turturro tallied her third goal of the game to tie the contest at 6-6, before Sbrilli, RU’s leading scorer with 35 goals, sent the Scarlet Knights home with their first league win.

Dandridge, who made six saves in the opening period, had a seven-save outing against Michigan. Redshirt senior Hollie DiMuro (West Babylon, N.Y.) had the best Rutgers defensive performance of the year with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

RU took a 4-2 lead into halftime after a commanding defensive half to start the game. Dandridgemade six saves in the first half, while DiMurocaused a pair of turnovers.

Rutgers got on the board first with a goal from junior Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.) before three other Scarlet Knights scored.

The Scarlet Knights will face the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Thursday, April 30 at High Point Solutions Stadium. As the host school, RU will play in the second game of the quarterfinal round, which will begin 35 minutes after the first quarterfinal game between No. 3 Northwestern and No. 6 Michigan at 3 p.m. EST.

All five games of the Big Ten Women’s Lacrosse Tournament will be steamed or aired on television. For updates on the tournament, including ticket, broadcast and schedule information, visit the tournament central page here.

Syracuse Holds Off Duke to Capture ACC Title

April 26, 2015

CHESTER, Pa.-Syracuse senior Kevin Rice registered three goals and four assists and the fourth-ranked Orange held off a late comeback effort from No. 6 Duke to take home the 2015 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship at PPL Park Sunday. The title is the first for recent ACC addition Syracuse.

Jack Bruckner led all Duke scorers with five goals, while Myles Jones added three goals and two assists. Bruckner, Jones, Case Matheis and Kyle Rowe represented the Blue Devils on the ACC All-Tournament team.

Rowe was outstanding at the draw, winning 19-of-30 restarts and picking up a season-high 14 ground balls. Long pole Brian Dailey registered a career-high two assists and picked up a ground ball and a caused turnover to cap a weekend with two points, 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The Blue Devils offense had the hot hand in the first quarter, scoring five unanswered on seven shots in a span of 6:23 for a 5-1 lead late in the first quarter. Bruckner and Matheis both had a pair in the run, while Tanner Scott capped the streak with his first of the day.

Like the Blue Devils dominated the action in the first quarter, the Orange did so in the second. Syracuse outscored Duke 7-1 for the quarter, including a 5-0 run that lifted it back in front 7-6. Dylan Donahue and Randy Staats tacked on late tallies after Guterding tied the game to put the Orange up 9-7 going into the locker room.

Duke, trailing at the half for just the fourth time all season, pulled within one to start the third quarter on a goal from Bruckner, but Syracuse answered with two goals for its largest lead of the game midway through the period.

The trend continued for the Blue Devils as Jones and Bruckner scored 62 seconds apart to make it 11-10 before Rice netted an extra-man goal in the closing seconds of the third period for two-goal Orange advantage.

The Orange and Blue Devils traded goals throughout the first half of the fourth quarter to set up a thrilling finish.

Trailing by three, 15-12 with under three minutes remaining in regulation, Duke short-stick midfielder Thomas Zenker scored just his third of the year to bring it within two, 15-13.

Rowe continued his dominance at the faceoff X on the ensuing draw and Myles Jones benefited from a Will Haus pass to make it 15-14 with 2:32 left on the clock. Rowe won the faceoff again and Duke fired a pair of shots off the mark before Syracuse called the timeout.

The Blue Devils had a look at goal from Scott blocked, but Syracuse couldn't clear and Duke got the ball back with 35 seconds left and called the timeout. Coming out the huddle, Matheis got a step on his man but fired his shot just wide and Syracuse backed it up to hold on for the win.

Staats added three goals and two assists and Nicky Galasso had a hat trick.

Danny Fowler finished with six saves and two ground balls in goal. Bobby Wardwell made eight saves and had three ground balls in 60 minutes of action. The Orange was 3-of-4 on man-up, while Duke went 0-for-4.

Duke closes its regular season schedule Sunday, May 3 against Boston University. Faceoff is set for 2:30 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium on ESPN3.

Notes
- Myles Jones, with 73 points on the year, is the first midfielder in Duke history to eclipse 70 points in a season. His 73 points are 11th on the Duke single-season list, while his 34 assists are eighth in a Duke season. His 157 career points are 22nd all-time at Duke.
- Justin Guterding pushed his season goals total to 46, tying Dan Flannery for 13th in Duke single-season history and 11 shy of tying Zack Greer's freshman record of 57.
- Duke is now 7-7 all-time in ACC Championship games and 4-2 under head coach John Danowski

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In the semifinals of the 2015 Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament, No. 14-ranked Ohio State scored six of the game’s final seven goals to come back from a 5-3 deficit and defeat No. 6-ranked Maryland (12-3), 9-6, Thursday night at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Ohio State, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, improves to 11-5 overall and will take on No. 1 seed Johns Hopkins (8-6) at 8 p.m. Saturday in the inaugural B1G Tournament championship game. BTN will televise the championship from College Park, Md., with the winner earning the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.

“It’s exciting to get the win and earn a chance to compete for the first Big Ten Tournament championship,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “I thought we played a full 60 minutes of Buckeye lacrosse tonight. It was a total team effort and the men stuck to the game plan. We will rest up and be ready for a tough test vs. Johns Hopkins Saturday.”

The teams combined for just five goals in the first half, with the Terps carrying a 3-2 lead into halftime. Buckeye senior Jesse King opened the scoring at 12:35 with a man-up goal before a three-goal Maryland run. The Terps’ Matt Rambo scored an EMO goal at 10:43 to tie the game and Maryland then went ahead at 9:19 on a goal from Joe LoCascio. Shots were 8-6 in favor of Ohio State in the first quarter and Buckeye goalie Tom Carey made the only save.

In the second quarter, LoCascio scored at 4:02 for a 3-1 Maryland advantage. With time winding down, Buckeye senior Turner Evans drove to the front of the net and scored on a low shot to cut the Terps’ lead to one (3-2) with 38 seconds left in the half. Ohio State had nine shots in the quarter, holding Maryland to three, as Carey made two saves.

Each team scored twice in the third quarter, with Maryland outshooting the Buckeyes 6-3, and Carey stopping three shots. After the Buckeyes were able to hold Maryland scoreless on a two-minute man-up chance, Buckeye junior Carter Brown tied the game at three at 7:53, but Maryland answered with back-to-back goals at 5:10 and 4:20 to push ahead 5-3. With just one second left in the quarter, Buckeye senior David Planning took a pass from sophomore John Kelly and his shot got through, again making it a one-goal game (5-4).

Ohio State scored twice in the first 3:13 of the quarter to tie the game and take the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter. Evans tallied at 12:27 before King set up Planning for a goal at 11:47, putting Ohio State ahead 6-5. The Buckeyes maintained their one-goal edge until King found freshman Colin Chell for two goals in a little more than a minute, as Chell scored from just outside the crease at 4:54 and 3:33 for an 8-5 Buckeye advantage. With the Terps’ cage empty, Brown put the Buckeyes up by four (9-5). Maryland’s Bryan Cole scored the game’s final goal with 25 seconds left in regulation for the 9-6 final. Each team had seven shots in the fourth quarter, with Carey making two saves, including a point-blank stop soon after the Buckeyes had taken the lead.

Ohio State outshot Maryland, 27-22, in the game. Carey had eight saves in 59:56. Senior Kevin Duffy closed out the game and did not face a shot. Maryland’s Kyle Bernlohr had three saves in all 60 minutes. Carey has started all 16 games for the Buckeyes this season and has an 8.34 goals-against average and .537 save percentage.

The Buckeyes won 11-of-17 faceoffs vs. Maryland, with graduate student Christopher May taking all 17 for Ohio State. Ohio State won the groundball battle, 25-16, led by May with five and Chell with three. On the year, May has won 179-of-287 faceoffs (.624) and picked up a team-best 121 groundballs.

King, who ended the game with a team-best three assists and four points, is the Buckeyes’ leading scorer with 62 points this season, including a team-best 36 goals and 26 assists, all career highs. The Tewaaraton Award nominee has four or more points in 12 games on the year.

Brown, Chell, Evans and Planning all had two goals for the Buckeyes in the win. Brown is second on the squad with 30 goals and 46 points (with 12 multiple point games), and Chell and Planning are tied for third with 17 goals each. Planning has two goals in four of his last five games and Chell had his seventh multiple-goal game of the season. Evans has eight goals and marked his third multiple point game this season.

Ohio State last played in a conference tournament championship game in 2013 when it claimed the ECAC title, notching the first postseason tournament win in program history.

BUFFALO, N.Y.- Monmouth University women’s lacrosse team fell 8-7 to Fairfield in the 2015 MAAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday afternoon, ending the Hawks’ season.

After trailing the entire game, Monmouth junior Marial Pierce (Middleburg, Va./St. John’s Catholic Prep) scored with 4:29 left on a free position shot to even the score at 7-7. Operating in a man up situation, Fairfield sophomore Riley Hellstein scored with 3:38 remaining to put the Stags ahead by one. Monmouth had two opportunities in the final 40 seconds to tie it but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Two things hurt us today, giving them the bulk of possessions in the first half hurt us,” said Monmouth Head Coach Denise Wescott. “The other stat that we really lost on big was draw control. I can’t ask for anymore of our team in the second half. They played with such heart, they played hard and they played to win. I thought we did enough to win in the second half but it’s a shame the scoreboard was in the wrong direction. I was proud of how hard they fought.”

The Stags added to their three goal halftime lead with a pair of goals in the first 2:30 to take a 5-0 lead over the Hawks. Monmouth then stormed back, with Claudia LaMarca (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) and Pierce scoring back to back goals. After Hellstein gave her squad a four goal lead, Monmouth scored three unanswered goals to close to within one. Fairfield’s Julieanne Mascera answered before Olivia Higson (Cheadle Hulme, England/Withington Girl’s School) tied it again with 4:40 remaining. Eleven seconds later Pierce scored the equalizer before Hellstein’s equalizer.

Fairfield controlled the action in the first half, registering nine of the 10 shots on goal. Donohoe kept the Hawks in the game with six saves. After fifteen scoreless minutes Stag Jenna Fuchs took a pass from Maeve Quinn for the game’s first goal. Four minutes later the Stags took a 2-0 lead and Hellstein finished the first half scoring with 6:53 remaining on a feed from Alex Fehmel.

Monmouth goalie Katie Donohoe (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic Secondary) had eight saves in the game. Pierce finished with three goals, while Higson and LaMarca each had two. Pierce and Kristina Vangeli (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) had three caused turnovers each.

Fairfield committed 18 turnovers in the contest but Monmouth was whistled for 31 fouls, more than double the Stags. Fairfield also dominated the draw circle, winning 12 of the 17.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 9 Brown University opened with a 4-0 lead and brought a 6-4 lead into the fourth quarter, but No. 11 Yale University outscored the hosts 8-1 in the second half to take a 10-6 decision in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals in front of 2,310 fans on Friday night at Stevenson Field.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs (10-4) advance to play third-seeded and 15th-ranked Princeton University in the tournament’s title game on Sunday at noon on ESPNU. The top-seeded Bears (12-4) will await their postseason fate when the NCAA Selection Show airs on Sunday at 9 p.m. also on ESPNU.

Yale sophomore Jeff Cimbalista led all scorers with three goals while seniors Conrad Oberbeck and Colin Flaherty each netted two goals. Senior goalie Eric Natale made nine saves.

Senior Tim Jacob (Palo Alto, Calif.) paced the Bears with two goals while junior face-off specialist Will Gural (Haverford, Pa.) won 16-of-20 face-offs, scored a goal, and tied for the game high with seven ground balls along with sophomore Alec Tulett (Toronto, Ontario).

Sophomore Dylan Molloy, the Ivy League Player of the Year, scored one goal, his 59th of the season, tying the Brown single-season record set by Andy Towers ’94 in 1991. Junior Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, Md.) and senior Nick Piroli(Black River, N.Y.) each added a goal. Junior goaltender Jack Kelly (West Islip, N.Y.) registered eight saves.

Molloy netted the game’s first goal, his 59th of the season, 1:20 into the contest before Bellistri gave the Bears a 2-0 edge at the 7:24 mark of the first quarter off a well-placed feed in front of the goal from junior Brendan Caputo (Westbury, N.Y). Jacob staked the hosts to a 3-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter with a shot from the right wing. The Bears out-shot the Bulldogs 14-4 in the period, 6-1 in shots on goal.

Brown pushed its lead to 4-0 to start the second quarter as Jacob scored his second goal of the game firing a shot from the point off a pass from Piroli. Yale pulled within 4-1 via a goal from Ben Reeves just over five minutes into the frame.

After back-to-back saves from Kelly midway through the quarter, Yale’s Sean Shakespeare cut the visitors’ deficit to 4-2 with 3:55 left in the half. Piroli wrapped around the crease and found the back of the net to push the Bears’ lead to 5-2 at the half. Gural won 8-of-9 face-offs in the first half for Brown.

Gural opened the third quarter with another face-off win, raced into the attack area, and scored 15 seconds into the period to extend the Bears’ lead to 6-2. Michael Keasey brought Yale within 6-3 less than two minutes later prior to a point blank save from Kelly midway through the frame. Yale scored the quarter’s last goal at 6:31 as Jeff Cimbalista converted on a one-time shot off a Shane Thornton pass.

Yale scored all of the fourth quarter’s six goals beginning with a tally from Conrad Overbeck just over a minute into the period. Colin Flaherty then tied the game at 6-6 with 9:46 to go. Cimbalista netted the next two goals, giving the Bulldogs an 8-6 lead with 6:32 remaining. Overbeck and Flaherty each added an insurance marker late in the game.

Guterding Leads No. 3 Duke Past Boston, 13-7

May 3, 2015

DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman attackman Justin Guterding scored four goals and added one assist to lead No. 4 Duke to a 13-7 win over visiting Boston University on Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

With his four-tally performance, Guterding reached the 50-goal plateau for the season. The ACC Rookie of the Year sits seven markers shy of the Duke single-season record for freshmen, a standard of 57 set in 2005 by Zack Greer, while the 50 are tied for 10th in Duke single-season history.

“You have to tip your cap to BU,” said head coach John Danowski. “I thought they were terrific and very well coached. They were very deliberate offensively and you have to give them a lot of credit. The goalie made some saves and we missed a couple of plays.”

Duke improves to 12-5 on the year and will await tonight’s NCAA Tournament announcement. The Terriers close the 2015 season at 6-8.

“The numbers the attack [unit] has put up have been astronomical and have been amazing,” Danowski said. “If you had said Justin [Guterding] would be a 50-goal scorer I would have said you’re out of your mind. Case’s [Matheis] numbers are now better than they were last year at this time. Those three guys have really started to play well together and it’s been really fun to watch.”

The game was tied, 5-5, at halftime before the Blue Devils scored three goals – tallies by Guterding, Jack Bruckner and Justin George – in the first 7:08 of the third period. Boston University pulled within two midway through the quarter, but goals from Guterding and Cohan stretched the Duke lead back to four early in the final period.

George finished the day with a career-high two points from a goal and an assist. Seven Blue Devils overall registered multiple points with Bruckner (3 goals), Case Matheis (1 goal & 2 assists), Chad Cohan (2g), Deemer Class (1g & 1a) and Myles Jones (2a) joining Guterding and George. Danny Fowler made 11 saves in goal to pick up his fifth win of the year, while Luke Aaron came on for the final six minutes and made two stops.

Duke held the Terriers to just two goals in the second half after they registered five in the opening 30 minutes. Brian Dailey anchored the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls, while Will Haus picked up three ground balls. Boston University managed just 20 shots on cage and only nine in the second half.

Jack Wilson led the Terriers with one goal and four assists. Pat Myers chipped in two goals and one assist while Ryan Hilburn added two goals. In the Terrier net, Christian Carson-Banister logged 14 saves.

The NCAA Tournament selection show will air Sunday night at 9 p.m., on ESPNU. The Blue Devils will be making their 19th appearance in the NCAA postseason event.

WLAX: No. 20 Ohio State falls to No. 7 Penn State in Big Ten Tournament championship

Chase, Cifarelli and Dabrowski named to all-tournament team

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 20 Ohio State fell to No. 7 Penn State Sunday afternoon, 13-11, in a wild, back-and-forth Big Ten tournament championship game at High Point Solutions Stadium at Rutgers University.

The Buckeyes were playing in their first conference tournament championship game in program history after knocking off No. 1 and previously undefeated Maryland Friday, 11-10.

“I was really proud of our effort,” head coach Alexis Venechanos said after the game. “We had our backs against the wall almost the entire tournament, playing three games in four days. We knew it probably wasn’t going to be the prettiest game today, but we definitely had our opportunities. You have to give credit to Penn State, they definitely played a great game. But I’m really proud of the way we competed. I think we played really unselfish and we’re excited for what’s next.”

Much like the first meeting between these two teams a month ago, this one came right down to the final minutes. Trailing 12-9 with 13:53 left, Ohio State scored two straight goals by Jennifer Porretto and Katie Chase to cut the lead to 12-11 with 9:19 left. Unable to record the neutralizer, Penn State’s Tatum Coffey streaked down the right side of the 8-meter arc less than 2 minutes later to push the lead back to 13-11. Ohio State would have a few chances down the stretch, but were turned away by the Penn State defense.

It was another game of runs as Ohio State struck first less than a minute into the game when Cifarelli found Chase to make it 1-0. Penn State responded, however, with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead midway through the half. Hodgson and Kelsea Ayers would answer for the Buckeyes at 13:15 and 8:52 to cut the lead to one. From that point, both teams traded goals until PSU scored two straight by Coffey and Jenna Mosketti to end the half and take an 8-5 lead into the locker room.

But it was Ohio State who came out the aggressor in the second half, scoring three straight goals in the first 7:15 to tie the game at 8-8 – and Chase played a hand in each one. First, Chase found Cifarelli from behind the goal streaking in front of the crease to make it 8-6. Cifarelli then returned the favor just over a minute later, finding Chase again to make it 8-7. Chase then assisted freshman Molly Wood to tie the game less than 3 minutes later, forcing a Penn State timeout. The timeout worked in PSU’s favor as the Nittany Lions answered with three straight goals to make it 11-8 with 17:09 left.

At that point some were probably wondering if the Buckeyes, playing in their third game in four days, had enough left in the tank for one more comeback. And the answer was yes as Dabrowski, Porretto and Chase helped Ohio State score three of the next four goals to make it 12-11 with 9:19 left, setting up the exciting final minutes.

Ohio State assisted on 10 of its 11 goals, with the lone unassisted goal coming off a free-position goal by Chase with 5:10 left in the first half.

Chase led Ohio State with four goals – setting a new Ohio State record for goals in a season (57) in the process – and notched a career high with three assists. Cifarelli contributed with four assists and one goal. Porretto finished with two goals and Hodgson, Wood, Dabrowski and Ayers all had one.

Tatum Coffey led Penn State with four goals.

Draw controls were even at 13 apiece. PSU had a slight edge in shots, 25-24.

Chase (11g, 3a), Dabrowski (7g, 3a) and Cifarelli (1g, 8a) were named to the all-tournament team.

Ohio State (13-7) will now await its NCAA tournament fate, which will be announced at 9 p.m. ET tonight on NCAA.com.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second consecutive season, the NCAA women’s lacrosse selection committee has awarded Ohio State with an at-large bid to the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship, announced Sunday evening on NCAA.com.

The Buckeyes (13-7) will face Notre Dame (10-8) Friday, May 9 at 3:30/4:30 p.m. ET at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. The winner will take on the winner of Louisville and No. 8-seed Northwestern Sunday, May 10 at 1/2 p.m. ET.

The selection is just the fourth bid in program history and the first time earning back-to-back bids since 2002-03.

“I couldn't be more proud and excited for our student-athletes and our program,” head coach Alexis Venechanos said. “To get to the NCAA tournament in consecutive years was definitely one of our goals coming into the season and this year we want to advance even further. We’re playing some of our best lacrosse of the season heading into the NCAA tournament.”

Conor Doyle Named ACC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the second time this year, Notre Dame men’s lacrosse senior attackman Conor Doyle (Towson, Maryland) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Offensive player of the week. Doyle scored three times and added five assists for eight points in Notre Dame’s 17-8 victory at No. 18 Army West Point on Saturday to close out the regular season.

The five assists and eight points were both career highs for Doyle, eclipsing the four assists and seven points against Duke on April 4 that also earned him the league’s weekly league honor – which he shared with Joe Sankey of North Carolina. His hat trick against the Black Knights marked his fourth hat trick in the past five games for Notre Dame and his fifth on the season. A member of the 2015 All-ACC team, Doyle now boasts 24 goals and 17 assists for 41 points on the campaign, ranking either second or third for Notre Dame in all three categories.

Doyle is one of three Notre Dame players to earn ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors this year, joining Mikey Wynne (March 16) and Matt Kavanagh (April 20).

The Irish stand at 10-2 on the season and hold the number one seed for the NCAA championship. Notre Dame will open NCAA play at 5 p.m. EDT on Saturday at Arlotta Stadium by playing host to the winner of a Wednesday play-in game between Towson and High Point. The 2012 edition of the Colgate men's lacrosse team lost 16-14 to Lehigh in the Patriot League championship game that year but were awarded an at-large bid into the 16-team field following a 13-2 regular season and led by 2012 Tewaaraton Award winner Peter Baum.

Colgate would go on to hand UMass, the only undefeated Div. I team in the NCAA at the time, its only loss of the season with a 13-11 victory in Amherst, Mass. The Raiders were knocked out of the postseason the following weekend with a 17-6 loss to Duke in the NCAA Quarterfinals at PPL Park.

That was Coach Mike Murphy's first season as head coach of the program and the Raiders took a more traditional route to the postseason this time around by earning the Patriot League's automatic berth in the now 18-team field by defeating Bucknell and Army West Point to claim the title.

The Raiders draw North Carolina, who fell 9-8 to to-ranked Syracuse in the semifinal round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament after beating the Orange 17-15 during the regular season. The two programs have met four times, with North Carolina winning the most recent three contests. In the 1999 season opener, UNC prevailed 17-8 and then doubled up the Raiders 12-6 on the road in 2005. The most recent meeting came in Tarheel coach Joe Breschi's first season as head coach with the hosts coming out on top 11-9 at Fetzer Field. Colgate took the series opener 13-2 on the road way back in 1960.

Patriot League teams have squared off against North Carolina three previous times in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Navy split with the Tarheels, losing 12-8 in 2007 and winning 8-7 in 2008. North Carolina defeated Lehigh 16-7 in 2013.

Colgate head coach Mike Murphy on facing North Carolina:

"They're really excited," Murphy said of the squad. "I remember this scenario four years ago as an at-large team sweating it out. Any time you get back to the NCAA tournament in your senior year, it's a feather in your cap. You've got to play at your best. Whether it's an ACC school, Big Ten, the NEC -- you've got teams that are playing at their best. You've got to be able to match that and bring your own game."

Colgate probable starters: Anthony Abbadessa, A; Ryan Walsh, A; Chase Wittich, A; Cameron Williams, M; Matt Clarkson, M; Peter Donato, M; John Baker, D; Matt Yeager, D; Leo Stourus, D; Brandon Burke, GK.

North Carolina probable starters: Luke Goldstock, A; Jimmy Bitter, A; Joey Sankey, A; Chad Tutton, M; Shane Simpson, M; Peyton Klawinski, M; Austin Pifani, D; Jake Bailey, D; Evan Connell, D; Kieran Burke, GK.

*WLAX: Ohio State falls to Notre Dame in NCAA first round, 13-11*

*Buckeyes end season with 13-8 overall record; senior class winningest in
program history*

*EVANSTON, Ill.* – No. 14 Ohio State saw its season come to a close Friday
night with a 13-11 loss to No. 12 Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA
women’s lacrosse championship at chilly, rainy and foggy Lakeside Field in
Evanston, Ill.

After waiting almost 3 hours for its game to begin because of lightning
delays, Ohio State came out firing and ready to play, jumping out to a 7-4
lead with 8:11 left in the first half after three straight goals by Molly
Wood, Jennifer Porretto and Cian Dabrowski. The Buckeyes eventually led 7-5
at the half while owning a 14-12 edge in shots and 11-5 advantage on ground
balls.

But it was Notre Dame who took control in the final 30 minutes, scoring the
first six goals of the half throughout the first 7 minutes to take an 11-7
lead. Ohio State’s Mary Kate Facchina finally broke the ND run on a
free-position attempt with 17:42 left – unofficially her fourth attempt in
a row after being fouled on the previous three attempts. Then, after ND’s
Alex Dalton made it 12-8 with 3:05 left on an empty-net goal, Ohio State
struck back with two straight goals by Dabrowski and Hodgson less than a
minute apart to cut the lead to 12-10 with 1:56 left.

But on ND’s next possession, Molly Cobb found Stephanie Toy

Ohio State Defeats Duke, 16-11

May 9, 2015

DURHAM, N.C. – Senior midfielder David Planning scored six goals to lead visiting Ohio State to a 16-11 win over fifth-seeded Duke in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium.

The Buckeyes (12-6) advance to next Saturday’s quarterfinal round in Denver, Colo., and will meet the winner of tomorrow’s Denver-Brown contest. Duke (12-6) concludes its season as the program’s eight-game winning streak in NCAA Tournament action came to an end. The Blue Devils will miss playing on Memorial Day Weekend for the first time since 2006.

After trailing 2-1 after one period, Ohio State outscored the Blue Devils by a 6-1 margin in the second quarter to claim a 7-3 lead at intermission. Planning then scored just 48 seconds into the third quarter to push the lead to 8-3.

Duke responded with goals from Tanner Scott and Myles Jones to pull within three scores, but the Buckeyes used a 5-1 run to close the quarter and held a 13-6 advantage after 45 minutes. After Ohio State increased the margin to eight goals at 16-8, Duke tallied the final three markers of the game to account for the final score.

Planning added one assist to the scoresheet while Carter Brown and Colin Chell chipped in four and three goals, respectively.

Ohio State’s Tom Carey posted 15 saves in net.

For the Blue Devils, Jack Bruckner led the attack with three goals and two assists while Justin Guterding and Scott posted two markers apiece. Goalkeeper Danny Fowler was credited with 11 saves.

#3 Denver Holds Off Second Half Surge By #10 Brown, 15-9, In NCAA Tournament

Denver, Co. - The 10th ranked Brown men’s lacrosse team came into Denver hoping to punch a ticket back to the NCAA Quarterfinals next week in Denver, but the third-ranked Denver Pioneers had other thoughts. Denver built a 10-2 lead at the half and held off a voracious Brown second half challenge to come away with a 15-9 win over the Bears in first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Denver (14-2) advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals next Saturday, May 16 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. Brown finishes its season with a 12-5 mark, just one win short of the school record for victories.

“We ran into a great lacrosse team today,” said Brown head coach Lars Tiffany. “A Bill Tierney team is always well coached and very talented.”

“To take the next step, we have to learn from games like this,” continued Tiffany. “We’ll definitely learn from this and we’ll be back.”

Coach Lars Tiffany’s Ivy League champion Bears ranked fifth in the nation in scoring with over 14 goals per game, but it was the play of Denver goalie Ryan La Plante, who set the defensive tone with 13 first half saves, including nine in the opening half. He finished with 16 saves.

The shining light for the Bears offense was the scoring of sophomore Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY), the Ivy League and New England Player of the Year, who scored three goals to set a single season Brown scoring record, breaking the mark of 59 goals by Andy Towers in 1990. Molloy, the nation’s leading scorer, now has 62 goals this season.

Senior Tim Jacob (Palo Alto, CA) and junior Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) netted two goals each for the Bears, while juniors Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) and Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY) scored one each. Brown junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) had nine saves in net.

The Pioneers were paced by Connor Cannizzaro, who scored a game-high five goals. Tyler Pace, Zach Miller and Sean Cannizaro scored two goals each for Denver.

Denver had the better of play in the opening quarter, with Brown falling behind by a 5-1 margin despite out-shooting the Pioneers, 19-10, with Denver goalie Ryan LaPlante making nine saves. Molloy’s goal at the 4:42 mark of the quarter, his 60th of the season, set a new Brown record for goals in a season.

The Bears were able to muster one score in the second quarter, a goal by Molloy that made the score 6-2 with 9:02 left. But a relentless and methodical Denver attack carried the half to lift the Pioneers to a 10-2 lead at intermission behind Connor Cannizzaro’s three goals.

Undaunted, Brown got back in the game with four straight goals to open the fourth quarter and trail, 10-6, with 7:05 left in the quarter. Jacob scored twice, junior Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) and Molloy once in the 4-0 spurt.

But three straight goals by the Pioneers to close the quarter, including Cannizzaro’s fourth goal with eight seconds left game Denver a 13-6 lead.

The loss ends the No. 12-ranked Buckeyes’ season, with the squad 12-7 on the year. The No. 3-ranked Pioneers advance to the NCAA semifinals in Philadelphia. The game marked Ohio State’s third NCAA quarterfinal appearance in program history.
