Upsets

As a Milford fan it was nice to see Bryan Wynes get over the hurdle and beat Flores at HWT. Flores had beaten him 2-3 times earlier this season. If you're only going to win once though, that was the one to win. Was also pleasantly surprised to see Alex Creasey take out Nick Lee in the consolation finals at 145. Alex was the #5 and Nick was the #2. Alex goes out on top as the winningest wrestler in Milford history, 4 time conference and state place winner.

Not sure what happened with Jones from AI, especially after doing so well and placing at the Beast. Obviously Loma Thomas from McKean had figured him out though beating him at least twice.

From a seeding perspective one might think that the 6 seed Luke McDonough getting to the finals at 145 was a surprise, but anyone that's been around youth wrestling in this state for the last 6-8 years knows that kid was a beast in the Tyrant wrestling club. His freshman year he was in the state finals versus Brent Fleetwood when Brent won his 4th title.

Boy someone did a lot of work . To prove....? We already knew down state is better at this point. Enjoy it now, cause up-state seems to be picking up interest again.

I think we can enjoy it now and for years to come. I don't see upstate wrestling improving at the high school level. I know all programs have up and downs. But with St. Marks in the condition they are in and Sallies having a good team but not like years past, I just don't see the overall improvement. There are very talented kids spread out over the area but as far as overall and team wise I just don't see it.

There are already plans in the works with some very good coaches helping to improve wrestling at the middle school level in NCC. That's where we are getting left behind. We have some good youth programs and clubs that I know we are starting to benefit from more and more each year. In the 80's, 90's and early 2000's it was upstate that dominated and now it's henlopen. Things change and in the years to come I'd expect to see improvements upstate. It doesn't happen overnight but the issue is being addressed!

Can someone pull stats from 90s and 2000s when independent and Blue Hen dominated? I am sorry but it is getting a little disheartening with the amount of gloat I see from henlopen. Yes, you are currently the dominant conference...but in the 80s and early mid 90s it was Blue Hen and in the late 90s and 2000s it was independent. During those times I did not see statistical information being brought up showing the dominance and I didn't hear any talk of switching qualifiers because of it etc. In Delaware the change of power happens every 7 to 10 years or so. That's how it is in our state having only 3 conferences; it is what it is. So enjoy it now as independent and blue hen did during their times of dominance because it will change as history has shown.

Did they have forums like this back in the 80s and 90s? I don't think anybody is denying how good Blue Hen and Independent wrestling was at one time. Independent wrestling for the most part is a little different. They can bring kids in from anywhere like what St. Marks did in their dominate times. St. Marks was a huge part of how good Independent wrestling was but from what I hear it doesn't look like they will get back to that point. Lots of changes at the top and a shift in the way of thinking as far as sports is concerned. Sallies draws from a wide area and could bring in quality wrestlers at anytime. (And they some top shelf wrestlers now.) We will see how the Blue Hen shakes out in the future. But honestly, I don't think anybody is really gloating about how good the Henlopen is. Right now it's just true.

Wasn't trying to prove anything. I was following up on a comment by Eighth place in another thread who stated henlopen was dominant and that someone could pull some stats. Was traveling for work with nothing to do so it kept me occupied for a bit.

Thank you for the stats Jeff. And you guys are right, I should have probably chosen my words more wisely. Gloat was probably a poorly chosen word as frustration sets in. It is just when I hear about giving up automatic conference bids and read in the paper of henlopen wrestlers stating "it is good to see independent finally getting a little better" it frustrates me as I wrestled in a time when these conferences were immensely better. I just never remember hearing about who's conference was better when I was wrestling; we just wrestled. We did not try to do stats and speak of how many conference wrestlers placed in each weight; we just wrestled and honestly compared who had more wrestlers ranked nationally. My point is that such conversations ceast to exist ten plus years ago and then all the sudden when blue hen and independent have declined (I believe they have declined and henlopen hasn't gotten better;they have just stayed the same) and henlopen is having more success, the conversations seems to appear....that is all i want by it.

Take it for what it is. All I am saying is these conversations were never brought to light years ago and now they are bringing brought up and obviously being trickled down to the wrestlers if they are speaking about it as they have no idea that blue hen and independent were dominant in years past. The power shift happens every 7 to 10 years and that is why the conference bids should stay the same or we will be changing these bids every time the power shifts. We all know one of the main causes of the decline in the north was the decline on the CYO program which fed all of NCC. It is not a coincodence that CYO dispersed around 2007 and 3 or 4 years later NCC wrestling declined. We are in the process of bringing back our youth programs in NCC which in turn will bring back these two conferences back to what they were in the future. Youth programs are the building block of our high school programs and that is what NCC has been lacking.

How can city kids and suburbanites up north hope to compete with the rugged, earthy kids from downstate who were nursed on chores and labor and instilled with a manly work ethic that courses through every fiber of their sturdy beings? The South (of Delaware) has arisen and shall never again be vanquished by the lowly North! (Stirring music fades, lights dim with the Henlopen flag yet waving and silhouetted by the southern sun setting over fields and woods...a solitary tractor tills the land in the distant background with smoke billowing majestically to the heavens....and scene).

any other big surprises of people medaling? Springer not medaling surprised me
No. 195 was laughable. No offense but I saw better semis at every in season tournament we attendee. Can't believe how everyone ran from Wuest! Guess that's a compliment. No big surprises. At 120 Hayes was bound to make a mistake eventually just stinks it was at states, at 126 novarnick didn't realize he was losing. Ref gave 1 stall and one escape at same time and kid didn't know. Felt sorry for the young man. 113 Robbie struggled against lesser opponents early on but dominated in the finals! 160 just wow!

that was the strangest match of all time Novarnick and Muaka i really wanted to witness that stratton Novarnick match, but that Muaka match was just as entertaining

It looked to me like the stalling call came as Novarnik was releasing him to prevent the stalling call. They came so close together I don't know that he or the coaches realized right away he was trailing. When time ran out it looked like he was putting his foot on the line for OT.
