Lexi Bruno Becomes Career Assists Leader in Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball 55-49 Loss to University of the Sciences

Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) became the school’s career assists leader, but Goldey-Beacom could not find its shooting touch in the second half and was handed a 55-49 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss by University of the Sciences at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning held a 27-25 halftime lead, but the Devils came out smoking in the second half with an 11-2 run to open a 36-29 cushion with 6:30 left in the third quarter. Sarah Abbonizio scored six points in that span and ended in with a layup for USciences, which shot 5-of-7 from the field in that span.

GBC was within 46-41 early in the fourth quarter before USciences scored the next five points to open a 51-41 lead with 6:06 remaining. Laura Trisch delivered the key bucket in that span by canning a huge 3-pointer.

The Lightning closed to 51-47 with 1:47 on a layup from junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA), but empty possessions followed and the home side could not take advantage. Abbonizio ended things by canning two free throws with eight seconds left for a 53-47 margin and give USciences the CACC South Division title.

Bruno ended with five assists and now has 421 career in just under three seasons. She entered the contest tied with Devonne Richardson (2009-13) tied for the team lead.

Bryson had 12 points and nine rebounds with Bruno getting 11 and six for the Lightning, who shot 34 percent (20-of-59) from the floor.

Abbonizio and Alex Thomas (Hockessin, DE) scored 12 points apiece with Colleen Walsh getting nine and 14 rebounds for the Devils (22-5, 15-3 CACC), who shot 36 percent (18-of-50) from the floor and overcame 15 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom (15-11, 11-6 CACC) now sits tied with Chestnut Hill (11-6) for second place in the CACC South. The two play each other in the final game of the season next Tuesday with one of those schools getting a home game in the CACC quarterfinals next Saturday.

Before that, Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday for Senior Night against Wilmington (DE) at 8:00 pm. Please note GBC will host “Hoop it Up” for our alumni and parents of student-athletes during the game. To RSVP your attendance, please RSVP the alumni office at alumni@gbc.edu.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Starts Season with Shutout of Southern New Hampshire, but Falls to Kutztown

DATE: February 17, 2017
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - The Wilmington University softball team began its 2017 campaign with a split of games on Friday, defeating Southern New Hampshire, 7-0, before falling to Kutztown, 3-1, to kick off the 2017 Snowbird Softball Freeze Out Tournament.

The bats wasted little time to warm up on Friday, collecting 19 hits in the two games, including seven extra base hits. The pitching was also firing on all cylinders, as Caitlyn Whiteside tossed a complete game shutout over the Penmen before Brooke Lachette tossed 4.1 strong innings against Kutztown, getting hurt by defensive errors.

Freshman Whitney DeMora introduced herself in a big way in the top of the first inning in the opener, crushing a solo shot to dead center field in her first collegiate at-bat to put the Wildcats ahead, 1-0. Becca Stanley led off the top of the second with a double before Kaitlyn Slater knocked her senior classmate in with a single for the 2-0 lead in the first two innings.

The big hits continued to come for the Wildcats, as Slater led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer to left for the 4-0 lead while a sac fly brought in another run in the inning to put the Wildcats ahead, 5-0. Stanley capped the runs for the Wildcats to a two-run blast of her own in the seventh inning, bringing in Colby Wyatt for the 7-0 lead. Whiteside took care of the rest for the shutout.

Whiteside allowed eight hits, but only one extra base hit, with only one walk. She struck out three batters in the win.

Stanley finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored while Slater went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Rosa’Lynn Burton and Danielle Bradley added doubles for their lone hits of the opener.

The defense let the Wildcats down in the nightcap, as they committed four errors in the game with all three third inning runs coming unearned.

Burton was the catalyst for the Wildcats’ lone run, as they got off to another fast start with a first inning score. Burton led off the game with an infield single, moving to second on an error. She was soon standing on third with a stolen base. Jazmeen Llamas put the Wildcats on the board with an RBI single, but she was left stranded at third base as the Golden Bears escaped a bases loaded, no out jam with just the one run.

Lachette got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first, but couldn’t escape danger in the third. An error and a single put two runners on with two outs, but the Golden Bears came up with a two-run single to move ahead, 2-1. Another error moved the runner to third base and Lachette got the ground ball she was looking. But another fielding error brought in the third run and the Wildcats could never recover.

The Wildcats had a chance in the top of the seventh, as Bradley led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Burton put the tying run on base with an infield single, but the Wildcats couldn’t convert in falling, 3-1.

Burton went 3-for-4 from atop the Wildcats’ lineup as Llamas picked up the lone RBI. DeMora had the lone extra base hit for the Wildcats with a double in the first inning.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday with games against Shippensburg and Lock Haven in continuing the 2017 Snowbird Softball Freeze Out Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Falls to Mount Olive and Catawba

Another tough test of softball was on tap for Goldey-Beacom, which was dealt a 12-2 loss by Mount Olive and an 8-3 setback by Catawba in Salisbury, NC.

GBC grabbed a 1-0 lead on Mount Olive in the top of the first when senior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) doubled to bring home sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE). After the Trojans grabbed a 2-1 lead, senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) in the third brought Mao home on a sacrifice fly for a tie game.

Mount Olive grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Caitlin Ewers lined a two-run single down the right-field line for a 4-2 contest. The game ended via run rule in the sixth when Callie Ferrell launched a three-run homer.

Mao closed with two hits and Millville, NJ sophomore Alexa Calareso permitted four runs – three earned – and three hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Ewers, Ferrell and Alexis Hobson all had two hits for the Trojans (7-6). Ewers gave up two runs and four hits over six innings with three strikeouts.

Against Catawba, Goldey-Beacom drew to a 1-1 tie in the third when Murphy scored on a wild pitch. But the Indians plated four runs in the bottom of the frame for a 5-1 cushion, keyed by Kristen Stinnard’s two-run single.

The Lightning (1-5) looked for a rally in the seventh and cut into the deficit with senior Amber Wroble (Mechanicsville, MD) lacing a two-run double to left, scoring King and sophomore Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE).

Calareso was charged with five runs – four earned – and 10 hits over five innings.

Stinnard record three hits and Kaylee Cook allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings with three strikeouts for Catawba (3-8).

Goldey-Beacom is off until March 4, when it faces Bridgeport for a noon doubleheader in the home opener.

SUBJECT: Women’s Basketball’s Season Comes to a Close with 81-74 Loss at Philadelphia

DATE: February 21, 2017
djl

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women’s basketball season came to an all-too-soon end on Tuesday night as they fell 81-74 on the road at Philadelphia in the 2017 regular season finale on Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.

In a “win and in” scenario for the second year in a row, the Wildcats (12-16, 9-10 CACC) fell on the final night of the regular season to miss out on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament. The win puts the Rams (14-14, 9-10 CACC) into the CACC Tournament as the South Division’s number four seed and a date with the North Division regular season champs Caldwell on Saturday.

The Wildcats fought back from a 12-point second quarter deficit with a 13-3 run to close the gap to as few as 30-28 with 3:06 showing on the clock. But the Rams finished off the half with two of the final three buckets to head into the break leading 34-30.

Jasmine Lee hit back-to-back jumpers to start the third quarter to tie the game at 34-34, but the Rams quickly answered with a 9-2 run of their own and never looked back. LaShyra Williams brought the game to within 46-40, late in the third quarter, but the Rams extended the lead back out to as many as 13 points before the end of the frame. They went into the final quarter of play leading 55-44.

Still trailing by 13 points, the Wildcats used an 8-0 spurt to climb to within five. Jocelyn Rodriguez started the run with a jumper before a corner three-pointer by Emma Matthews brought the Wildcats to within 62-57 with 4:00 left in regulation. But the Rams had an answer once again as they scored the next five points to put a stamp on the game.

Late three-pointers had the Wildcats to within single digits, but the Rams were able to hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold off any late-game comeback.

The Wildcats forced the rams into 22 turnovers, as they were able to convert them into 21 points. But the Rams out-rebounded the Wildcats, 43-34, for the game, including 30-17 on the defensive side, not allowing the Wildcats to get second chance points.

Lee ended her four-year career with the Wildcats with a team-high 18 points, adding five rebounds and three steals. Williams added 17 points and five rebounds while Macy Robinson chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Matthews came off the bench to hit three three-pointers, finishing with 11 points. Rodriguez ended her four-year career with six points, four rebounds, and four assists on Tuesday night

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Clinches Home Quarterfinal With 89-72 Win at Chestnut Hill

Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) recorded the first triple-double of her career, became the school’s three-point leader and Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) took over in the fourth quarter for Goldey-Beacom, which clinched a home game for the CACC quarterfinals with an 89-72 triumph at Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, PA.

Bruno broke the three-point record by connecting from the left wing with 1:47 to go in the first half, marking her second school record after eclipsing the assists mark last Wednesday at University of the Sciences. She has 201 three-pointers and bested the mark held by Jacinda Jones (2007-08, 2009-13), who hit 198 from beyond the arc.

Bruno closed the half by scoring six points during an 8-0 run that put the Lightning ahead, 41-36. She scored 12 points in the half, McGrogan netted 11 and junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) added 10 for GBC, which shot 45 percent (14-of-31) that included 5-of-6 from 3-point range.

McGrogan then took over in the fourth, scoring nine of her 11 points in the stanza during a 14-2 run that gave the visitors a 74-56 lead with 5:20 remaining. She started the burst with two 3-pointers and Bruno also netted five points.

Bruno ended with 19 points, 14 assists that set a career high and 11 rebounds that tied her personal best in yet another milestone to her standout career. Bryson scored a game-high 28 points on 14-of-17 shooting and McGrogan netted a career-best 27 points for the Lightning, who shot 57 percent (16-of-28) from the field in the second half and 51 percent (30-of-59) overall.

Shannon Glenn and Vicky Tumasz netted 14 points apiece for the Griffins (16-10, 11-8 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (17-11, 13-6) ends the regular season second in the CACC South Division and is headed to the conference tournament for the seventh time in eight seasons. It will be home Saturday against Dominican-NY (11-17, 11-8), which closed third in the North Division. Game time at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE is 2:00 pm.

Three Wildcats were named as the awards were announced, with senior guard Tyaire Ponzo-Meek being voted the CACC Player of the Year and First Team All-CACC while junior Nick Richards earned a spot on the Second Team in a vote by the league’s 14 head coaches. Head Coach Dan Burke rounded out the selections by being named the CACC Coach of the Year in a vote by the league’s sports information directors.

It is the first time the Wildcats have produced the conference’s Player of the Year as well as the first time a head coach has been named the CACC Coach of the Year. It also marks the first time two student-athletes were voted to a First and Second Team in the same season. The Wildcats had a third team member and two honorable mention players in the 2009-10 season.

Ponzo-Meek (Wilmington, Del./Howard) led the Wildcats and finished third in the CACC in scoring 19.7 points per game, scoring in double digits in all 28 games in the regular season to extend his incredible streak to 62 consecutive games scoring 10 or more points. He went 7-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc in a game against Georgian Court before following that up with a 4-of-5 performance from long distance against Nyack. In those two games he shot 20-of-24 from the floor and was named the CACC Co-Player of the Week. Ponzo-Meek also collected his lone double-double of the season at Chestnut Hill, scoring 15 points while dishing out a career high 10 assists.

Richards (New Castle, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) was right behind Ponzo-Meek in scoring, pouring in 18.3 points per game to finish fifth in the CACC. He also doesn’t miss much of the action for the Wildcats, playing in 34.1 minutes per game. He leads the CACC with 60 steals on the year, 43 of which have come against CACC opponents. He also leads the team in dishing out 3.3 assists per game and is the second leading rebounder on the Wildcats in securing 6.5 boards a game.

This season, Richards has scored in double digits in all but two games, including four games of 30 or more points. He set a career best with 34 points at Goldey-Beacom on February 18 to lock up a home playoff game, and scored 33 and 30 points in back-to-back games in the middle of the season as well. He leads the team with four double-doubles on the season, grabbing a season’s best 14 rebounds against Holy Family on February 7. He also swiped a season’s best five steals in two separate games this season, first at Felician and then again at Holy Family.

SEIDENBURG NAMED MAC FREEDOM COACH OF THE YEAR, THREE AGGIES NAMED TO ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

ANNVILLE (PA) – After leading Delaware Valley University to the number one seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Men’s Basketball Tournament in his first year at the helm, Mark Seidenburg was selected by his peers as the 2017 Coach of the Year. In addition, three Aggies were named to the all-conference in first teamer Tyliek Kimbrough (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls), second teamer Tyrea Williams (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) and honorable mention Alex Matsinye (Randallstown, MD/St. Paul’s).

Seidenburg took over an Aggie team that lost three players to graduation, including an All-American, from last year’s conference championship squad. DelVal was picked to finish sixth in the MAC Freedom in the coaches’ preseason poll, but, instead, tied a program record for league wins (11-3) and earned the top seed for the playoffs. A loss in last night’s semifinals gave the team a final overall record of 16-10.

Kimbrough, a senior guard who was a second-team all-conference selection last year, led the Aggies in scoring (16.3 avg), assists (4.7 avg) and steals (1.5 avg). He reached double figures in scoring in 20 of the 26 games, including a pair of 30-plus point performances. His 37-point effort at Moravian College back in November was the 11th-highest, single-game output in program history. Kimbrough also dished our five or more assists on 13 occasions.

Williams, a 6-foot-7 senior center, picked up his first all-MAC Freedom accolade as he averaged a double-double on the year with 13 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest. He also led the conference in blocks (2.2 avg) and field goal percentage (.654). Williams had double-doubles in 13 of the 26 games and reached double figures in scoring in seven other contests, including a career-best 28 in a home win over Misericordia University.

Matsinye also earned all-conference honors for the first time. The sophomore swingman averaged 10.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and two assists per showing. He scored 10 or more points in 12 games, including a career-best, 24-point effort in a win over Manhattanville College.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Season Ends With 63-59 Loss to Dominican (NY) in CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom did everything it could in a tightly contested game, but it gave up a late run and was dealt a 63-59 loss by Dominican (NY) in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC cut Dominican’s lead to 49-47 with 3:08 left when junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) hit a jumper. It was the closest the home team got from that point forward in a contest which no one had more than a five point lead at that juncture.

Lisa Bouffard then continued her stellar play for the Chargers by canning a jumper with 2:43 remaining for a 51-47 contest. Junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) then hit a layup for GBC to make it 51-49 before Dominican’s Kyla Ramseur scored twice from the stripe with 1:59 to play for a four-point contest.

A Lightning turnover led to Bouffard hitting two free throws with 1:43 to go for a 55-49 margin. After Bruno and Ramseur each made a free throw, Bouffard converted a huge layup with 41 seconds to go for a 58-50 contest.

Bouffard made a free throw with 41 seconds to go for a nine-point game before GBC went on a 9-3 run to close to 62-59 with 17 seconds left. Bruno and freshman Mara Poch (Girona, Spain) each hit a 3-pointer in that span.

Stephani Alston was fouled for the Chargers and, after missing the first free throw, made the second for a 63-59 game with 15 seconds remaining.

Bruno closed with 20 points that included 14 in the second half, Bryson had 13 and 14 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season and sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added 10 points for the Lightning (17-12), who shot 31 percent (21-of-67) from the field.

Bouffard was unstoppable with 29 points on 12-of-19 shooting that included 19 points in the second half and also had 11 rebounds. Rebecca Rabeiro netted 11 for the Chargers (11-18), who shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from the floor in the second half and 42 percent (22-of-53) overall.

Goldey-Beacom was appearing in the CACC Tournament for the seventh time in the last eight seasons and was hosting a conference tournament game for the first time since 2013.

UBJECT: Wilmington Baseball’s Upset Bid Thwarted as #16 Lynn Scores Late to Secure 6-3 Victory

DATE: March 7, 2017
djl

BOCA RATON, Fla. - - The 16th ranked Lynn Fighting Knights scored four runs in the final two innings to ruin the Wilmington University baseball’s upset bid, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Lynn Baseball Field.

The Wildcats (4-3) went toe-to-toe with the Knights (13-6), picking up nine hits and had chances throughout the game to draw even, but the Knights always had an answer.

The Wildcats had a chance to strike first in the top of the third, as Jesse Long started a two-out rally by reaching on an error. Rocky Ferrier singled to keep the inning alive before Max Carney lined one to right that dropped in. Long was waved home from second, but a great throw by the right fielder and an even better catch and tag by the catcher got Long at the plate.

The Knights then capitalized on the momentum and scored twice in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two on a double down the left field line.

Mike Annone sparked the Wildcats in the fourth, leading off with a double to right. Julian Kurych moved him over to third and Kendall Small drove him in with a single into right center to put the Wildcats on the board. But the rally was cut short as Logan Gilbert laced a ball but right at the third baseman who caught it and doubled up Small at first.

The Wildcats had a chance to tie it in the top of the seventh, but Lynn’s outfield showed its strength once again. With Frank Nigro on second and two outs, Long singled back up the middle and Nigro was waved around third. But the throw to the plate was on the money again, getting Nigro to end the inning and keep Lynn on top.

Lynn used the momentum swing to fuel their at-bat in the home half of the inning, as they came up with a two-run shot to right to extend the lead to 4-1 after seven innings of play.

But the Wildcats didn’t back down, as Ferrier started the top of the eighth with a single and stolen base. Now with one out, Annone answered the home run call with a dinger of his own, bringing the Wildcats back to within a single run, 4-3, after eight complete innings.

The Knights were able to put the Wildcats away for good, however, tacking on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with another two-run double inside the third base bag, settling on the final score, 6-3.

Ferrier, Max Carney, and Annone all led the Wildcats with two hits apiece while Annone led the team with his two RBI.

Kyle Menchaca was saddled with the loss in his inning of work. Connor Davis earned the win with six innings of work for the Knights. Jonathon Wake earned the save in tossing the final two innings for the Knights.

The Wildcats travel down I-95 for a night game on Wednesday, as they head to Barry University for another matchup with a Sunshine State Conference opponent. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom’s Anna Hortelano Pey Moves Up in Latest Women’s Tennis East Region Rankings

Freshman Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) jumped two spots to 15th in singles and the remaining slots for Goldey-Beacom held still in the latest East Region rankings according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Hortelano Pey moved up from the first regional rankings November 15. Seniors Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) still are ranked tied for 10th in doubles and Goldey-Beacom remains third as a unit.

GBC (10-0, 7-0 CACC) last fall captured its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title with a 5-1 victory over Post and clinched its sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament. The six-team NCAA East Regional will be held May 1-2, 2017 at a site to be determined.

Hortelano Pey was tabbed first team All-CACC and has made a noticeable impact. She is 6-1 in singles that includes 4-0 at No. 2 singles and will receive tougher competition now that she moved up to number one this spring. Hortelano Pey won her first five matches of the season with all in straight sets.

Sengl and Beg are 10-0 this season, all at first doubles. The duo, both picked second team All-CACC, in six of the pro sets have not lost more than four games. They are the only CACC doubles team ranked in the top 10.

Sengl last year received the conference's Women's Tennis Top XV Award for having the best GPA among those participating at the league championship and in September was picked the CACC Student-Athlete of the Month. She also is fourth in school history with 43 career doubles victories and tied for third with 41 singles triumphs.

It was Beg who in 2015 won the clinching match against Chestnut Hill that secured Goldey-Beacom's 5-3 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the first such head-to-head win by any team in school history. GBC ended that season ranked 31st in the country and with a school-record 18 victories.

The Lightning’s record marks the best start in program history after beginning 8-0 in 2010-11. Their league mark also is a team record and marked the first time the squad had been the top seed in the CACC Tournament.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Splits CACC Opening Doubleheader with Philadelphia

DATE: March 21, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - A pair of pitching performances highlighted Tuesday afternoon at Asbury Field, but the Wilmington University softball team could only come away with a split against Philadelphia in both team’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season debut.

An 11-day layoff didn’t slow down red-hot Caitlyn Whiteside as she spun another complete game shutout in the opener, 2-0, for the Wildcats (11-6, 1-1 CACC). But the bats were slowed by the Rams (4-9, 1-1 CACC) in the nightcap as Philadelphia’s Naomi Stas tossed a 1-0 complete game shutout to earn the split.

Whiteside (Bermuda Dunes, Calif/Shadow Hills) tossed her third straight complete game shutout, striking out seven batters while only allowing three hits. She has not allowed an earned run since the sixth inning against Stonehill on March 8, spanning a combined 22.1 innings. She allowed two unearned runs of that game as well, bringing her scoreless streak to 21.1 consecutive innings.

Whiteside didn’t much in the opener, but what she got came from the legs of Rosa’Lynn Burton. Burton doubled to right center to start the bottom of the first inning and quickly stole third base. Alyssa Velasquez safety squeezed her home for the game’s first run. Burton was at it again in the third inning, starting the rally with a one-out walk. Burton stole second and took off for third on the next pitch. The throw down to third hit a fielder and away from the bag, allowing Burton to trot home for the 2-0 lead.

The Rams left a runner on base in the fourth and sixth innings, but only had a runner in scoring position once in the contest. Whiteside took care of the rest to move to 7-2 on the season.

Game two starter Danielle Bradley pitched just as well, but suffered the opposite fate for the Wildcats. The Rams scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the second inning, which proved to be the game’s only run.

The Wildcats left two runners on base in the bottom of the first inning and had two other innings of stranding one runner aboard. Stas set the Wildcats down in order from the fourth inning on.

Burton and Megan Brown each tallied one hit in each game to lead the Wildcats’ offense on Tuesday.

The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday when they host West Chester at Asbury Field. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Strong Starting Pitching and Early Runs Lead to CACC Sweep over Concordia for Wilmington Baseball

DATE: March 25, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team scored early in each game against Concordia, enabling the team to earn a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep, 12-3 and 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The runs came early and often for the Wildcats (10-8, 4-2 CACC) in the opener, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings. It wasn’t as easy to score in the nightcap, but the Wildcats backed the arm of Chuck Delagol and scored single runs in the second and third innings to ensure the sweep.

Kendall Small started the scoring in the first game with an RBI groundout to short before Kyle Fries capped the three-run first with a double to right field. Mike Annone and Logan Gilbert came around to score for the 3-0 lead.

The runs continued in the second inning as Julian Kurych reached on a throwing error as Regan Hidalgo scored. A wild pitch brought in another run before Gilbert doubled inside the right field line, chasing Rocky Ferrier and Kurych home for the 7-0 lead.

Frank Nigro collected a two-run double in the fourth before Small hit his first career home run in the fifth. His two-run shot to right extended the Wildcats; lead to 11-1 after five innings. Nigro finished off the Wildcats scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning, knocking in Hidalgo with a one-out single to center.

Starter Sean Deely’s only blemish came in the fourth inning, as he allowed an unearned run to cross. Deely improved to 3-0 in tossing seven innings, striking out eight batters while only allowing three hits.

Nigro went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI while Kyle Fries and Hidalgo added two hits each. Fries went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Hidalgo went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.

The Wildcats received strong starting pitching once again in the nightcap as Delagol went six innings of one-hit baseball. He struck out seven batters while not allowing a walk before turning it over to Dan Hyatt for the save. Delagol moved to 3-0 with the win while Hyatt picked up his fourth save.

The only offense Delagol and Hyatt needed came in the second inning. Small led off the frame with a single before Fries moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Nick Macey easily chased Small home with a double down the right field line, putting the Wildcats on the board, 1-0.

Delagol came back out and sat the Clippers (1-14, 0-2 CACC) down in order in the top of the third, allowing the offense to come through with an insurance run in the home half. Ferrier started the inning off with a single into left before Kurych moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Annone fouled out but Logan Gilbert put the pressure on the defense by putting the ball in play, leading to an error and another run in for the Wildcats.

The Clippers put one runner in scoring position in the nightcap, but Delagol was able to catch the runner off the bag to end the threat and the fourth inning.

The Wildcats get right back into action on Sunday as they head to Caldwell to make up a postponed doubleheader from last weekend. The first pitch of the CACC doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Splits with Shippensburg, 3-4 and 6-0, on Military Appreciation Day

DATE: April 23, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University softball team reached the 30-win plateau for the third straight season and fourth time over in its NCAA era with a nonconference split against Shippensburg, dropping the opener, 4-3, before winning the nightcap, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon at Asbury Field.

Sunday was also the second annual Military Appreciation Day celebration for the Wildcats (30-17), as pregame festivities highlighted the afternoon. The Christiana High School Junior ROTC Color Guard was on hand while Specialist Nathanial Threatts threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Senior outfielder Meghan Brown sang the Star Spangled Banner to cap the pre-game festivities.

But the Wildcats fell behind early in the opener, as Shippensburg (25-18) jumped ahead 3-0 after the first two innings. Rosa’Lynn Burton was the catalyst once again for the offense, blasting her first collegiate home run to right center in the bottom of the fifth to get the Wildcats to within a single run, 3-2.

An unearned run with two outs in the top of the sixth loomed large for the Wildcats, as Kaitlyn Slater led off the bottom of the sixth with her ninth homer of the year, again cutting the deficit to 4-3. But the Wildcats left a runner on second in the sixth and had the tying run thrown out at second attempting to steal in the bottom of the seventh.

Burton, Jazmeen Llamas, and Slater all had two hits each for the Wildcats in the opener.

A five-run second inning sparked the Wildcats in the nightcap, but it was highlighted by yet another single season record being broken. Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside spun her 11th complete game shutout of the year, breaking Chelsea Botsch’s single season mark of 10 set in 2015. Whiteside is now 15-7 on the year with a mere 1.25 earned run average.

Llamas started the scoring with two outs and the bases loaded, hitting an RBI single to center. Alyssa Velasquez then worked a walk for the 2-0 lead before an error brought in two more runs for the Wildcats. Colby Wyatt capped the five-run inning with an RBI single to center.

That was more than enough for Whiteside, as she only gave up four hits and did not allow a walk in her complete game. She struck out two batters.

Wyatt capped the scoring for the Wildcats with her sixth home run of the year, blasting one to center in the bottom of the sixth. Wyatt and Slater now have 15 career home runs each, tied for second in the program’s NCAA era.

Wyatt went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap while Burton added two more hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Wildcats head into their final week of the regular season and head to USciences on Wednesday for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader in Philadelphia. The first pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team earned a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference split against Nyack on Sunday afternoon, winning the opener, 5-3, before falling in the nightcap, 3-1, at Wilson Field.

The Wildcats (25-14, 15-5 CACC) broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth in the opener but could only come up with three hits in the nightcap, stranding 10 base runners in succumbing to the split against Nyack (21-14, 10-8 CACC).

Mike Annone started the scoring in the opener with a RBI double in the bottom of the first, but the Wildcats found themselves down 2-1 going to the bottom of the fourth.

Kendall Small hit a one out double and was chased home two batters later as Regan Hidalgo doubled to the gap to left field to tie the game, 2-2. Dan Hyatt than executed a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Max Carney to move ahead, 3-2.

But the Warriors responded with a run in the top of the fifth, getting a two-out bloop hit to center. The game wasn’t tied for long however, as Julian Kurych answered with a two-out hit of his own in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Annone who started a two-out bases empty rally with a walk and stolen base.

Frank Nigro lofted one into left in the bottom of the sixth to score Regan Hidalgo, adding an insurance run for the Wildcats, 5-3.

Starter Sean Deely went seven innings, striking out five batters before giving way to the bullpen. Noah Latshaw picked up two outs in the eighth but walked the bases loaded. Dan Haytt came on and struck out the final batter of the eighth before eventually striking out the side in the ninth for his seventh save of the season. Deely improved to 6-0 on the year with the win.

Hidalgo hit a pair of doubles in the win while Annone went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The offense had trouble solving the Warriors’ Jose Corrales in the nightcap, however, striking out six Wildcats while only giving up three hits. The Wildcats were able to work seven walks off Corrales, but the Wildcats couldn’t come up with the big hit, stranding 10 runners on base.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the second, the Wildcats could only muster one run off Corrales, as Rocky Ferrier hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Nick Macey. The Wildcats loaded the bases again in the inning, but a ground out ended the threat.

Tied 1-1, the Warriors led off the top of the third with a solo shot to left and then threatened again with two outs in the inning. With runners on second a third, Jesse Barton single to right to score the runner from third, but Jesse Long produced a one-hop bullet to the plate to gun down the trailing runner, keeping the score at 3-1.

The Wildcats left two runners on in the third and put the leadoff runner on in the seventh. But Max Carney was left stranded at second as Omar Celaya picked up his seventh save of the season.

Chuck Delagol suffered his first loss of the year (5-1), giving up three runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out five Warriors.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday when they host Millersville for a nonconference doubleheader. The first game is a makeup game from March 15 and will start at 1:00 p.m. The Wildcats and Marauders will play a pair of seven-inning contests.

Following a record breaking freshman season, Burton (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) was voted as the CACC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CACC. Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside joined Burton on the All-CACC First Team. Senior Kaitlyn Slater and sophomore Jazmeen Llamas were named Second Team All-CACC as well.

The league’s 14 head coaches in the sport conducted voting for the major awards and all-conference teams.

Burton was the catalyst for the Wildcats atop the batting lineup all season long, leading the team and finishing second in the CACC with a .474 batting average. She led the CACC in scoring 52 runs while also leading the league with 82 hits and a single-season program record 39 stolen bases. She also finished second in the CACC with six triples and 108 total bases. Her 82 hits this season are one away from tying the program’s single-season record held by Book Ash in 2013.

Whiteside (Bermuda Dunes, Calif./Shadow Hills) aced the pitching staff all season long, finishing 17-7 with one save. In 154.1 innings pitched, Whiteside led the CACC with a 1.13 earned run average, setting a new single season program record with 14 complete game shutouts. She ended the regular season in throwing 28 consecutive scoreless innings in four complete game shutouts. Whiteside compiled 78 strikeouts and only issued 17 walks on the season.

Slater (Harrington, Del./Woodbridge) was named the Second Team All-CACC third baseman after turning it on late in the season. Since the April 10 doubleheader at Bloomfield, Slater is hitting .448 with six homers and seven doubled while bringing in 30 RBI. She set a new single season program record with nine homers this season, tied atop the CACC leaderboard. She also finished the record season second in the CACC with 44 RBI while hitting a career best .312 on the season. Her 95 assists from the hot corner are sixth most in the CACC.

Llamas Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) is the only repeat All-CACC performer for the Wildcats, as she was also the Second Team All-CACC second baseman a season ago. Llamas also caught fire in the second half of the season, hitting .431 with 15 runs scored in the since an April 8 doubleheader at Post. She finished ninth in the CACC with a .376 batting average on the year, scoring 25 runs while knocking in 19 more. She was also 10th in the league with a.430 on-base percentage. She also recorded 43 assists and a .969 fielding percentage from the second base position.

Caldwell’s Marisa Monasseri was voted as the CACC Player of the Year for the second year in a row after leading the league with a .518 batting average, 57 RBI, and nine home runs. Her teammate Sydney Ponto was named the CACC Pitcher of the Year after going 25-4 with a league leading 231 strikeouts, and a third best 1.47 ERA. Monasseri and Ponto’s coach, Dean Johnson was voted as the CACC/BSN Coach of the Year in a vote of the league’s sports information directors.

Nyack College rounds out the major award winners by earning the 2017 CACC Team Sportsmanship Award.

The Wildcats finished 34-17 on the season and 17-9 in the CACC. They earned the fourth seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament and will play crosstown rival and fifth seeded Goldey-Beacom in the first round on Thursday. The tournament is being held at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. The Wildcats and Lightning’s first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Field 2.

Scouting the No. 8 Wilmington University Wildcats:

The Wildcats tied their program record with 34 wins this season, tying the mark set in 2013 (34-20) and again in 2015 (34-18). The 19 conference wins are tied for second most in program history, only behind last year’s mark of 20 wins and six losses. The 19 wins ties the mark set in 2013 and again in 2015.

The Wildcats had four members voted All-CACC, including freshman left fielder Rosa’Lynn Burton being named the CACC Rookie of the Year. Burton was joined on the First Team with starting pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside. Second baseman Jazmeen Llamas and third baseman Kaitlyn Slater were voted Second Team All-CACC.

Burton leads the Wildcats and is second in the CACC with a .472 batting average while also leading the CACC with 84 hit, 52 runs scored, and 41 stolen bases. Her 41 stolen bases are already a single season program record while she also broke the program’s single season mark of 83 hits set by Brook Ash in 2013 with two hits in the CACC Tournament.

Slater leads the team and is third in the CACC with 44 RBI on the year. She is second in the conference with nine home runs, which also set a new single season program mark for the Wildcats. Colby Wyatt has six homers on the season and is second on the team with 39 RBI. Wyatt broke the program’s all-time RBI mark earlier this season and now has 110 career RBI.

Llamas is second on the team with a .374 batting average while freshman catcher Mirabella Klebart is third with a .316 batting average.

In the circle, Whiteside leads the CACC with a 1.31 ERA, throwing a single season program record with 13 complete game shutouts. In 160.2 innings pitched, she has only allowed 30 earned runs and 18 walks while striking out 84 batters. She is 17-9 on the season in 33 appearances.

Senior starter Brooklyn Lachette is fifth in the CACC with a 2.12 ERA, going 6-3 in 23 appearances. In 79.1 innings this season, she has allowed 24 earned runs while striking out 35 batters with only 13 walks.

As a staff, the Wildcats lead the CACC with a 1.95 ERA, .45 points lower than Dominican’s 2.40 team ERA. The Wildcats rank fifth in the league with a .958 fielding percentage.

ROANOKE, Va. - - Wilmington University outfielder Rosa’Lynn Burton capped her outstanding freshman campaign by being named to the 2017 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Second Team All-American on Wednesday night at the awards banquet prior to the Division II National Tournament.

It is the first NFCA All-American in the Wildcats’ NCAA era while also the first time a student-athlete has earned Second Team All-American stature in program history. Burton (Dover, Del./Dover) joins alumnae Katie Warrington (2013) and Chelsea Botsch (2015) and the only other All-Americans for the Wildcats.

Burton led the Wildcats and finished second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a .463 batting average, while also pacing the league with 88 hits, 57 runs, and 41 stolen bases, all of which were single season program records for the Wildcats. The CACC Freshman of the Year owns a .500 on-base percentage with 12 doubles, seven triples (which are tied for 10th in the NCAA), and a homer for a .616 slugging percentage. She was only five stolen bases off the Division II national leader following the Regional Tournaments.

The left fielder and leadoff hitter helped the Wildcats to a 36-21 overall record and a 17-9 mark in the CACC, good enough for a fourth place finish in the standings. The Wildcats then earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament to mark their fourth straight appearance. Burton and the Wildcats advanced to the East Region I Tournament Championship round against top seeded and host Adelphi, going 2-2 in the tournament.

Burton was invited to the banquet after being named one of the Top Eight Finalists for the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Freshman of the Year last week. Harding’s Autumn Humes earned the National Award on Wednesday night after going 33-3 with a 1.19 ERA and seven saves in the circle, while also batting .346 with 10 doubles, seven homers, and 53 RBI at the plate.

Minnesota State Mankato’s senior Coley Ries was voted the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year after going 36-3 with 426 strikeouts and 16 shutouts in the first for the Mavericks.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - For the eighth year in a row, the Wilmington University men captured the 2016-17 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Alfred R. Restaino Sr. Cup with the women finishing fourth overall, as announced by CACC Commissioner Dan Mara.

The Caldwell women’s programs captured the women’s cup, followed by Georgian Court and Philadelphia. Georgian Court and Bloomfield trailed the Wildcats on the men’s side to round out the top three.

The cups are awarded annually to the institution that performs at the highest level in all CACC-sponsored men's sports. The point system used for the award takes into account each athletic program’s finish in both the 2016-17 CACC regular season contests and conference tournaments. Each institution receives a combined point total and the sum is then divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors.

When combined, the Wilmington University athletics department finished second of 14 institutions with an average score of 10.6083 for its 12 programs. Georgian Court University topped the combined list with an average score of 10.7545 for their 11 programs, with both the men and women finishing second overall in their respective Restaino Cup standings.

The men’s Restaino Cup was claimed with an 12.55 average over five sports, led by CACC Championships claimed by the cross country (14 points) and golf (14 points) teams. Men’s soccer (11.75 average) and baseball (12.5 average) reached as far as their CACC Tournament Semifinal rounds while men’s basketball (10.5 average) advanced to the CACC Tournament quarterfinal round as well.

The Wildcat women were led by the women’s tennis team, competing in their first CACC season. They averaged 12.25 points for their performance, reaching the CACC Tournament semifinals.
