NYACK, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University women's basketball team has stayed in the thick of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division playoff race with a 73-60 wire-to-wire victory at Nyack on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats (12-12, 7-8 CACC) started the game with a 12-4 run and never looked back. Nyack (6-15, 4-10 CACC) closed the gap to as few as three-points in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats ended the game with another run, outscoring the Warriors 13-3 over the final 3:12 of the game.
The win keeps the Wildcats on pace with Goldey-Beacom and Chestnut Hill, as both the Lightning and Griffins are tied for the final playoff spot at 7-7 in the conference. The Wildcats head to Chestnut Hill this week for the second meeting this season.
On Saturday, the Wildcats' lead ballooned to as large as 14-points midway through the second quarter. Tenicia Spence started a 12-4 run with the team's first bucket of the second quarter. Ebonee Dixon followed suit with a jumper before Spence hit a three-pointer for the 27-16 lead. Dixon made it 29-18 with another jumper before Spence converted an old-fashioned three-point play, grabbing the largest lead of the game, 32-18, with 4:30 left before the half.
But the Warriors answered with an 8-0 run of their own before going into the halftime break trailing by only 35-28.
Nyack closed the gap even more in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 39-35 before the Wildcats regained momentum. Auryonah Nash started another 10-2 run for the visitors as they were able to take the lead back out to 49-37 with 3:08 left in the third.
The lead wasn't safe to start the fourth quarter either, as the Warriors continued to hang around and cut the deficit to as few as three-points on multiple occasions.
Holding onto a 60-57 lead, the Wildcats closed out the game on a 13-3 run, securing the cross-divisional contest.
Spence came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. She also hit the only two three-pointers of the afternoon for the Wildcats, going 2-for-3 overall. Nash scored a career high 14 points while also grabbing six rebounds and adding four steals. Dixon and Lindsay Bradford scored 13 points each, as Bradford went 7-of-9 from the foul line and added six rebounds.
The Wildcats shot 45.8 percent from the field while also going 17-of-26 from the foul line. The defense held the Warriors to a 26 percent shooting game from the field, including just 4-of-21 from beyond the three-point arc.
Wilmington heads to Chestnut Hill for a crucial CACC contest on Tuesday night, as the women start the doubleheader with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.

orey Taite’s Big 3-Pointer Lifts Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball to Huge 79-76 Win Over Concordia (NY)

Freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) canned a huge 3-pointer with 17 seconds left as Goldey-Beacom withstood a late charge from Concordia (NY) in a big 79-76 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning began to tighten the screws late in the first half, when a 19-5 bridging both stanzas gave the squad a 44-34 lead in the first minute of the second half. Senior Algeron Torrence (Syracuse, NY) continued his strong pace with seven points in that span.

GBC maintained the seemingly comfortable margin before Concordia went on a 9-2 run for a 68-65 deficit with 7:54 left. Justyn Gardner scored four points in that spurt and Jalen Heath ended it on a 3-pointer.

Junior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) canned a big 3-pointer with 3:56 left to give the Lightning a 75-69 lead. But the Clippers continue to battle with Heath making one free throw and Elijah Brown hitting a layup with 2:25 to play for a 75-72 deficit.

GBC senior Jarrel Lane (Roselle, NJ/St. Patrick) made 1-of-2 from the stripe with 1:52 left before Concordia’s Stephen Milhaven rebounded Andrew Peacock’s missed 3-pointer and laid it home with 1:20 remaining for a 76-74 contest.

Two Concordia fouls before it was in the penalty kept resetting the shot clock in Goldey-Beacom’s favor. After two Lightning timeouts, it had to inbound the ball from the baseline with 20 seconds left and only three on the shot clock.

Lane inbounded and passed it into the left corner to Taite, who found nothing but net on his triple for a 79-74 game.

Heath missed a 3-pointer on the other end and Peter Aguilar tipped in the rebound with 2.7 seconds to play, making it 79-76. Both teams then used their final timeout and GBC had to inbound from its own baseline. Lane threw a pass in the backcourt that was corralled by Peacock, who saw his desperation toss from three-quarter court go off the backboard as time expired.

Torrence has 15 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out for his second straight double-double. Ridgeway-Higgs scored a season-best 18 points, Taite netted 17, Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) had 12 and seven rebounds, fellow junior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) netted 10 points and Lane tied his career best with nine assists.

Aguilar scored 25 points, Milhaven netted 17 and Heath added 13 for the Clippers (10-14, 7-8 CACC).

The strong-shooting affair saw GBC hit 51 percent (32-of-63) from the floor with 11 three-pointers and Concordia register 44 percent (28-of-63) with eight 3-pointers.

GBC (8-15, 6-8) now sits tied with Chestnut Hill (6-8) for the fourth and final conference-tournament spot from the South Division with five games remaining.

Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday for a rescheduled doubleheader against Dominican (NY). Please note the women’s game starts at 5:00 pm and the men’s contest begins at 7:00 pm.

Second-Quarter Outburst Propels Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball to 64-47 Triumph Over Concordia (NY)

Goldey-Beacom seized momentum in the second quarter and never looked back in a big 64-47 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Concordia (NY) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC was down 15-5 with 3:13 left in the first quarter when it embarked on a 15-2 run for a 20-17 lead just 30 seconds into the second period. Freshman Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) scored seven points in that spurt to help her side shoot 5-of-7 from the floor.

The Lightning found themselves down 23-22 with 8:05 left in the half when it scored the next 20 points to grab a 42-23 lead with 7:36 remaining in the third quarter. Six different players for GBC found the scorebook in that spurt with sophomore Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) and freshman Candice Berner (Frederick, MD) netting five points apiece.

The Clippers finally cracked the scoreboard again on Hadiyah Black’s jumper with 6:04 to play in the third, but not before they were held scoreless for 12 minutes and committed nine turnovers in that span.

GBC in the second quarter outscored Concordia 19-6 and shot 8-of-17 from the field. Berner and sophomore Mikila Stefanski (Hammonton, NJ/Cedar Creek) scored five points apiece in that span for the Lightning, who forced the Clippers into eight turnovers in the period.

Sophomore Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ/Millville) ended with 14 points and six assists, Berner had 13 points and nine rebounds, Stefanski scored 11 points with Bryson adding 10 and nine rebounds for GBC, which shot 48 percent (14-of-29) from the field in the first half and 40 percent (24-of-60) overall. Stefanski hit three 3-pointers and has 62 this season, three off Bruno’s single-season school record from last year.

Jessica Rosalbo scored 13 points, Khadijah Donaldson netted 10 and Black hauled in 16 rebounds for the Clippers (4-18, 2-13 CACC), who shot 35 percent (19-of-54) from the floor and only 2-of-16 from 3-point range.

Goldey-Beacom (7-16, 7-7 CACC) moves into a tie with Chestnut Hill (7-7) for the fourth and final conference tournament from the South Division with five games remaining. Wilmington (7-8) sits one-half game out.

Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday for a rescheduled doubleheader against Dominican (NY). Please note the women’s game starts at 5:00 pm and the men’s contest begins at 7:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom ran into a scoring buzzsaw in the first half and it only got worse in the second half for a 76-49 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

USciences raced to a 38-23 halftime lead by shooting 47 percent (14-of-30) from the floor and holding GBC to just 32 percent (8-of-32). Will Gregorits scored 13 points for the Devils on 6-of-10 shooting and Sho Da-Silva added 10.

The Devils kept their foot on the accelerator in the second half, opening things on a 25-11 run to grab a 63-34 cushion with 8:45 remaining. Gregorits and Wes Kerr scored eight points apiece in that time.

The injury-depleted Lightning dressed only eight healthy bodies tonight and some were forced to see extended minutes. Junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) finished with 10 points, freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) poured in nine with juniors Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) and Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) getting eight apiece.

Gregorits scored 23 points, Da-Silva had 14 and 11 rebounds with Kerr getting 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Devils (15-10, 12-6 CACC), who shot 48 percent (29-of-60) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom (8-18, 6-11) remains two games behind Chestnut Hill (8-9) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot from the South Division with only two games remaining.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday plays its home finale of the 2015-16 season against Wilmington (DE), starting at 3:00 pm.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Captures First Victory of the 2016 Season, But Split Saturday Games in Myrtle Beach
DATE: February 20, 2016
djl
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - The Wilmington University softball team split Saturday's games at the Snowbird Softball Freeze Out Tournament at Grand Park, falling to Lock Haven, 5-1, before capturing their first victory of the season, 7-6, against Merrimack.
The Wildcats (1-3) were locked with a tight one throughout the day's first game against Lock Haven (1-2) before the Bald Eagles broke it open in the top of the seventh with three runs. Merrimack (1-3) fought back to tie the game in the top of the sixth, but the Wildcats squeezed home the go-ahead run in the bottom half before recording the final three outs.
Brooke Lachette worked out of a first inning bases loaded jam by only allowing one run, but that lead would hold for the rest of the game. The Wildcats' bats couldn't solve the pitching of Lock Haven's Rachel Mouillesseaux. The Wildcats collected a pair of singles from Danielle Bradley and Becca Stanley in the second, but left one runner on without really posing a threat. Their next hit wouldn't come until the fifth inning.
The Eagles tacked on a run in the fifth while the Wildcats only mustered two out bases empty hits in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Lock Haven added three insurance runs on four hits in the top of the seventh before Colby Wyatt doubled in Stanley for the Wildcats lone run in the bottom half.
Stanley and Wyatt each went 2-for-3 in the game, with Wyatt collecting a pair of doubles and an RBI. Lachette fell to 0-2 on the year after throwing six innings, striking out three, but allowing five runs on seven hits.
The nightcap was a back-and-forth affair against the Warriors, with Merrimack jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first two innings. The Wildcats would strike big in the bottom of the second.
Bradley led of the inning with a double before Stanley's walk had runners on first and third. Stanley stole second and drew the throw, allowing Bradley to sneak home for the first run. Shannon Brantley doubled down the left field line to score both Stanley and Lexi Baughman for the 3-2 lead, and then Brantley scored to make it 4-2 on a field error off the bat of Jazmeen Llamas.
The lead wouldn't hold long however, as the Warriors answered with a three-run homer following an error which kept the inning alive.
An error in the fourth allowed the Wildcats to tie the game again, as pinch runner Sarah Coyne came around to score on a throwing error on a sac bunt by Baughman. Baughman then came around to score on a wild pitch, again giving the Wildcats the lead, 6-5.
The Warriors again knotted the game with an RBI single in the top of the sixth, but Stanley started the home half of the frame with a double to set up the Wildcats. Wyatt moved Stanley over to third on a sacrifice and Baughman's bunt single brought home Stanley for the 7-6 lead.
Lachette, in a relief role since the fourth inning, put the tying run on first to lead off the inning but picked up a big strikeout with the runner in scoring position. Lachette finished off the win with a comebacker to the mound.
Llamas batted 2-for-3 in the win while Brantley secured two RBI. Lachette picked up her first win of the win in four innings pitched, allowing one run on two hits and recording one strikeout.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, as they have two more games in Myrtle Beach to close out their opening weekend. The team will face Mansfield in the opener before taking on Molloy in the finale starting at 10 a.m.

SUBJECT: Lightning Long Ball Sinks Wilmington Men's Basketball, 78-66, in CACC Rivalry Game
DATE: February 20, 2016
djl
WILMINGTON, Del. - - The hot shooting of Goldey-Beacom took down the Wilmington University men's basketball team on Saturday, 78-66, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Wildcats (9-18, 4-14 CACC) shot 41.1 percent from the floor for the game, but the Lightning (9-18, 7-11 CACC) put in 49.1 percent of their shots, including shooting 9-of-20 from beyond the three-point arc. The win momentarily kept the Lightning in the race for the final CACC South Division playoff spot.
Wilmington's largest lead of the game came early in the first half, as the Wildcats started the game in front, 11-6. Brian Adkins tied the game with a dunk, 4-4, before Tyaire Ponzo-Meek hit one of his three three-pointers with 15:06 to play in the first half for the 7-4 lead. Ponzo-Meek hit another jumper to lead 9-4 with 13:37 to left. A pair from the foul line again gave the Wildcats a five-point lead, 11-6.
The Lightning fought back with a 6-0 run, taking the lead, 12-11, with 11:43 left in the half. The team's went on the seesaw, with Paul Medlin putting the Wildcats back in front, 18-17, with 6:01 left, but the Lightning responded with a three-pointer to retake the lead. The lead wouldn't trade hands again.
The game would be tied at 20-20, but the Wildcats weren't able to get back in front the rest of the way, as another Goldey-Beacom three-pointer gave the home team the lead for good, 23-20. Another three-pointer put the Lightning up, 30-22, with 2:30 left, before a layup at the buzzer put the home team ahead, 32-25, heading into the halftime break.
The Lightning lead grew to as large as 15-points with 12:40 left in regulation, as they hit a three-pointer to move ahead 49-34.
The Wildcats began to climb back into the game with back-to-back layups by Medlin, and then cut into the lead even more with a four-point play by Ponzo-Meek with 10:23 to play. The junior hit the three-pointer while hitting the deck, and then sank the free throw to bring the Wildcats to within 51-44. Adkins snuck in and pick-pocketed the Lightning point guard in the back guard, and dunked it home to get the Wildcats to within five, 51-46.
David Hartman and Adkins converted back-to-back layups before Sam Sanders hit the first free throw to get to within 65-63 with 2:58 to play, but the Wildcats couldn't get any closer. The back-breaker was a three-pointer with 1:39 to play, putting the Lightning up 71-65 with 1:39 left. The Lightning then hit 7-of-8 from the foul line down the stretch to ice the game.
Ponzo-Meek scored 24 points on 7-of-18 shooting, hitting 3-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc, and 7-of-7 from the foul line. He also added five rebounds and five assists on the afternoon. Adkins finished with 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Medlin added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The Wildcats season finale is on Tuesday night as they welcome Holy Family to the WU Athletics Complex. The team will honor its two seniors prior to the tip, which will be at approximately 8 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Ends Season with 85-65 Rout at Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom went on cruise control and finished the season with an 85-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

The first half was a one-sided affair as Goldey-Beacom (10-18, 8-11 CACC) rolled to a 45-22 lead by shooting a robust 51 percent (19-of-37) from the floor and limited Georgian Court to only 28 percent (7-of-28). Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, fellow junior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) had nine on 4-of-6 shooting and freshman Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) also poured in nine for GBC, which saw its bench gain a 19-5 scoring edge.

That margin increased in the second half when the Lightning scored 12 straight points for a 69-31 margin with 13:12 left. Taite, Swint, junior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore Daniel Cooper (Miami, FL) all scored three points in that time.

Swint finished with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with four 3-pointers, Taite netted 15 points with three 3-pointers, Cooper scored 14 points off the bench and junior Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) poured in 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. All of this helped the Lightning shoot 46 percent (32-of-69) from the floor, nail a season-best 13 three-pointers and improve to 6-0 all-time vs. the Lions.

Jakov Pilic scored 19 points, Nikola Vujovic had 13 and 10 rebounds with Juwuan Carter and Michael Pierre adding 11 points apiece for Georgian Court (5-21, 4-15), which shot 42 percent (22-of-53) from the field but committed 18 turnovers.

Tillman becomes the eighth player in program history to haul in at least 200 rebounds, moving up to seventh with 201. His 37 blocked shots already are the eighth-best total in team annals. Wilson’s 117 made free throws are third best for one season in team annals and Taite’s 103 are eighth. Taite’s 58 steals this season put him eighth for one season in program history.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Splits Two to Open 2016 Campaign

Goldey-Beacom commenced its 2016 season with a 5-4 victory over Kutztown before it was handed a 9-4 loss by UVA-Wise at the Pioneer Classic in Greeneville, TN.

Kutztown struck first in the opening frame for a 1-0 lead. Sara Keeny led off by reaching on an error, stole second, took third on a flyout from Danielle Amato and scored on another error.

The Lightning in the bottom of the fourth loaded the bases with none out on consecutive singles from Ryann Farley (Barnegat, NJ), fellow junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) and freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE/Delmar). Junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) then lifted a one-out sacrifice fly to center that plated Farley for a 1-1 tie. Sophomore Kylie Doyle (Tower City PA) followed with an infield single that scored King and a throwing error allowed Murphy to cross home for a 3-1 GBC cushion.

Kutztown got one back in the sixth on an RBI single from Bridget Newman, but GBC answered with two in its half of the frame for a 5-2 lead. Sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) lined a two-out, run-scoring single through the left side and Farley followed with a bases-loaded walk.

The Golden Bears made things interesting in the seventh by loading the bases and then getting a two-run double from Gabby Tareila for a 5-4 game. But freshman Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ/Notre Dame) buckled down with the go-ahead run in scoring position, getting Newman to fly out for the Lightning’s first season-opening victory since 2012.

Giampolo (1-0) was outstanding in her first collegiate start, yielding four runs – one earned – and eight hits over seven innings with two strikeouts and just one walk. Brandle, the only player for the Lightning a season ago to start all 36 contests, amassed two hits.

Newman (0-1) was tagged for three runs – two earned – and five hits over 3 2/3 innings for Kutztown (2-3). Amato and Danielle Sienko each had two hits.

These same squads will battle in a doubleheader March 17 in Kutztown, PA.

Against UVA-Wise, the opposition scored three times in the top of the second for a 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Mindy Combs broke the 1-1 deadlock with a two-out infield single to first base, scoring Bridget Henzel. Erika McLaughlin followed with a two-run single to plate Shannon Bennett and Zoe Millard.

GBC got those runs back in the fourth for a 4-4 tie. Doyle lined a run-scoring single to plate Murphy, took second on the throw and advanced to third when sophomore Ashleigh Cavanaugh (Newark, DE/Newark) scored on a wild pitch. Doyle then crossed home when freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE/Delmar) singled up the middle for the deadlock.

The Cavaliers grabbed a 5-4 lead in the fifth when Millard lined a two-out single down the left-field line to score Samantha Ely. They doubled their margin in the sixth when a fielding error off the bat of Delany Turner allowed McLaughlin to score.

UVA-Wise made it 9-4 in the seventh on Combs’ two-run double and Ely’s two-out, bases-loaded walk.

Taylor Brandts (1-0) allowed four runs – three earned – and four hits over four innings with four strikeouts for the Cavaliers (4-0). Turner fired three scoreless innings for the save with Bennett and McLaughlin each recording three hits to help their squad close with 16.

King recorded two hits and Dingmans Ferry, PA sophomore Natalie Mickles (0-1) was charged with five runs and 10 hits over 4 1/3 relief innings for the Lightning (0-2).

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday battles host Tusculum at 9:00 am and Ursuline at 11:00 am.

DATE: March 12, 2016

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Junior Becca Stanley ensured the Wilmington University softball team would sweep Bloomfield, 10-4 and 5-4, hitting a game tying home run before clinching the series with a walk-off single in the 11th inning of game two on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field.
In the team's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and home opener, the Wildcats jumped out to a big lead in game one, but needed the heroics of Stanley in game two.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and trailing 3-1, Shannon Brantley kept the team alive with a double to right center. Stanley stepped in and hit her second homer of the season, tying the game to force extra innings.
In the extra frames, the Wildcats had a chance in the bottom of the eighth, but Sarah Coyne was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a base hit from Kaitlyn Slater. The international tiebreaker rule came into effect in the ninth inning.
Bloomfield (5-8, 0-2 CACC) was able to scratch a run across in the top of the ninth with a one out single, but the Wildcats responded with a run of their own in the bottom half. With one out in the inning, Shannon Brantley singled through the right side to score Slater from second base.
Brooklyn Lachette found herself in a bases loaded jam with only one out in the top of the 11th, but the junior threw a 1-2-3 double play before getting a fly ball to end the threat. That set up the walk-off win for the Wildcats.
With Meghan Brown placed on second, Lachette moved the runner over to third and Stanley finished off the comeback with a single through the left side, walking off with a 5-4 victory.
In the opener, the Wildcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Slater started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before an error brought in another run. Lachette then doubled to right center to score Colby Wyatt. Stanley finished of the first frame with another double, bringing in Meghan Brown.
Bloomfield cut into the lead with a four run fourth inning, but the Wildcats added two more runs in the home half to regain a comfortable lead, 8-4. Jazmeen Llamas legged out an infield single to score Brantley before Wyatt executed a squeeze play for the final out of the inning.
Cambria Ziemba finished off the Bears with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning before Lachette finished off the win for Danielle Bradley (1-4) with a three-inning save.
Brown went 3-for-3 with two RBI in game one while Ziemba and Llamas added two hits each. Taylor Rizzotte and Stanley each went 3-for-5 in the nightcap while Stanley brought in three runs. Brantley also collected three hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

SUBJECT: Bats Awaken as Pitchers Dominate in Nonconference Sweep, 5-1 and 10-0, for Wilmington Softball over Pitt.-Johnston
DATE: March 22, 2016

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The strong pitching outings by Shannon Brantley and Caitlyn Whiteside were backed by the bats awakening in a nonconference doubleheader sweep of Pitt.-Johnstown, 5-1 and 10-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Asbury Field.
The pitchers each tossed complete games but it was the offense that shined through with 11 hits in each game. The Wildcats (8-12) used two-out magic in the opener to score their runs before breaking out for eight runs on eight hits in the second inning of game two to sweep Pitt.-Johnstown (3-10).
The Mountain Cats started out hot, scoring on an inside-the-park on the first pitch of the first game. But from there, it was all Wildcats.
Becca Stanley answered immediately for the Wildcats, starting the bottom of the first with a leadoff double. Now on third, Cambria Ziemba scored Stanley with a single over the head of the shortstop to tie the game, 1-1.
Stanley was involved again in the bottom of the second, as Taylor Rizzotte started a two-out rally with an infield single to the shortstop. Rizzotte quickly stole second base and Stanley singled through the left side to easily score Rizzotte for the 2-1 lead.
Brantley settled in and retired 12 of the next 14 batters through the fourth inning following the leadoff home run. The Wildcats bats took the game over in the fourth. Again with two outs and the bases empty, Rizzotte sparked the offense with a single over the third baseman. Stanley followed with a double inside the third base line and Jazmeen Llamas put the Wildcats ahead, 3-1, with a single through the left side. Ziemba added a pair of insurance runs with another two-run single to left center, bringing in both Stanley and Llamas.
An around the horn double play ended the top of the sixth and Brantley closed the door with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the seventh for the game one win.
Brantley improved to 2-0 on the year with the complete game, as she struck out six batter and only allowed four hits. Stanley led the Wildcats by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Llamas went 2-for-2 with a run scored while Ziemba went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Rizzotte was the final Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Not to be outdone in the nightcap, Whiteside tossed a five-inning complete game shutout. After going 1-2-3 in the top of the first, the bats backed Whiteside right away in the home half.
With two outs and Llamas on second, Kailtyn Slater launched a two-run shot to deep left center to open the scoring. Whiteside then struck out the side in the top of the second, bringing the hot bats back to the plate.
The Wildcats sent 11 batters to the plate in the second frame, connecting on eight straight hits. Rizzotte beat out a safety squeeze for a bunt hit to score the first run before Llamas singled to left with the bases loaded for another run. Ziemba lined a shot off the pitcher's glove for an RBI single before Slater doubled to the wall in left to bring in Stanley and Llamas. Brantley added to her day with an RBI single before Meghan Brown capped the scoring with another RBI single to left, and all of a sudden the Wildcats led 10-0.
Whiteside worked out of the only trouble she found herself in with a fourth inning jam, getting a comebacker to the circle with runners on first and second. Whiteside went to third base for the force out before Slater flung the ball across the diamond for the 1-5-3 double play. Whiteside struck out the final batter to leave a runner on second.
The freshman closed out the game with three more strikeouts in the fifth inning, bringing her total to a season high 10 in the game. She only allowed three singles and a walk in the shutout.
Slater paced the offense in game two by going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored while Llamas and Colby Wyatt added two hits apiece.
The Wildcats have a quick turnaround as they return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday afternoon. They head to Chestnut Hill for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team dropped a nonconference game at East Stroudsburg, 22-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Whitenight Field, ending a four-game road trip.
The Warriors (7-1) scored the first three goals of the game, but the Wildcats (0-5) fought back to close the gap to 5-3 with 13:52 to play in the first half. But the Warriors closed the half on a 9-0 run, carrying them to the nonconference victory.
The stretch carried over into the second half as well, as the Warriors scored the first seven goals after halftime to open as large as a 21-3 lead.
La'Dae Boykin put the Wildcats on the board with 23:34 to play in the first half as the teams traded the next five goals. Gabby Spalt cut the deficit in half, 4-2, with a free position goal with 19:27 to play before Sara LeBrun added a goal with 13:52 to play to get the Wildcats to within 5-3.
East Stroudsburg called a timeout and regrouped, controlling the ensuing draw and going on to score the final nine goals of the half, holding the Wildcats to a single shot the rest of the first half.
The draw control continued to trouble the Wildcats in the second half, as the Warriors finished the game by controlling eight of the final nine draws. The Wildcats' Marisa Parker scooped up the draw to begin the half, but a turnover on the offensive possession led to an ESU goal at the other end.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Sweeps Bowie State

Goldey-Beacom rode solid pitching and timely hitting for a 2-0 victory over Bowie State and then rallied from a four-run deficit to notch a 7-6 triumph in the nightcap at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning jumped on the Lady Bulldogs in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Junior Ryann Farley (Barnegat, NJ) singled, took second on a groundout from Charlee King (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) and scored when fellow junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) cracked a double to left-center field.

East Windsor, NJ freshman Alyssa Giampolo (2-5) was doing her part in the circle, retiring 14 straight batters spanning the first through fifth innings to hold Bowie State at bay. She only faced five batters above the minimum in the five-hit shutout.

GBC got an insurance run in the fifth for the final. Farley drew a one-out walk and hustled all the way around to score when a grounder from freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE/Delmar) was booted by second baseman Caitlin O’Neill.

The Lady Bulldogs in the seventh got the leadoff runner on with O’Neill’s single, but Giampolo settled down to retire the next three batters.

Farley had two of her squad’s four hits and Nicoleen Ochoa had two of Bowie State’s five hits. Ochoa (3-6) permitted two runs – one earned – and four hits over six innings with three strikeouts.

Bowie State in game two scored three times in the third for a 4-0 lead. Tiffany Bearns keyed the spurt with a run-scoring double and O’Neill added an RBI single.

But the Lightning rallied in the last of the frame with four runs for a tie game. Murphy laced an RBI triple, King followed with a run-scoring single and Giampolo launched a two-out, two-run double to deep left field.

Bowie State regained the advantage, 5-4, in the fourth on Jaelyn Belt’s RBI triple, but GBC scored twice in the bottom of the inning for its first lead. Murphy had another RBI triple and King followed with a run-scoring single to left.

Goldey-Beacom (5-13) added what turned out to be a key insurance run in the sixth when Farley delivered an RBI single to left-center field, making it 7-5. Danielle Watt had a run-scoring groundout in the seventh to bring the Lady Bulldogs within 7-6, but Emily Lewis fouled out to senior catcher Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) for the final.

Farley had two more hits in the contest to extend her hitting streak to four games and notched a career-high four stolen bases, moving her to six on the season. Dingmans Ferry, NJ sophomore Natalie Mickles (3-3) got the victory, yielding five runs – four earned – and seven hits over four innings. Giampolo capped her solid day by allowing just one run and two hits over three innings for her first collegiate save.

Stefanie Ray (4-8) was breached for seven runs – five earned – and nine hits over six innings with five strikeouts for Bowie State (8-14). Belt ended with three of her team’s nine hits.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Gains Split With Millersville

Freshman Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) tossed her second shutout of the year and drove home the deciding run for Goldey-Beacom, which notched a 3-0 victory over regionally ranked Millersville in game two after a 5-1 loss at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Millersville starter Cassidy Pinchorski retired the first 10 batters in game two before GBC got to her for three runs in the fourth. Sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) looped a one-out double and scored on Giampolo’s double down the right-field line for a 1-0 lead. After freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE/Delmar) singled, junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) grounded one that escaped second baseman Jaynie Black and permitted both Murphy and sophomore pinch-runner Autumn Hollis (Elkton, MD/Caravel) to score for a 3-0 contest.

Giampolo (4-10) was on cruise control, retiring the game’s first six batters and getting a quartet of one-two-three innings. She tossed a four-hit shutout with a strikeout and no walks in facing just five batters above the minimum.

Brandle finished the contest with two hits.

Pinchorski (10-7) allowed three runs – one earned – and four hits over six innings for the Marauders, who entered the game 10th in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings.

With game one tied 1-1 entering the second, the Marauders grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second. Raeann Buskey walked, took second on Megan McCurdy’s sacrifice and scored when Jamie Trewhella’s bunt single also turned into a throwing error.

Millersville (23-15) made it 3-1 in the third when Kelsey Campbell dropped a squeeze bunt that allowed Brittany Smith to score. Trewhella in the fourth led off with a single and scored on a three-base error for a 4-1 game.

Brandle in the first inning tripled and scored on Giampolo’s single. It was her sixth career triple, moving her one outside the school’s career top 10 list.

Briana Andraos (13-8) pitched great for Millersville, permitting one run and four hits over seven innings. Trewhella went 4-for-4 and Megan Hallock added two hits.

Mao had two hits and Dingmans Ferry, NJ sophomore Natalie Mickles (4-11) allowed two runs – one earned – and two hits over two innings for the Lightning (9-31).

Bats Come Alive in Nightcap for Wilmington Softball to Earn Split at Shippensburg in Nonconference Finale
DATE: April 18, 2016
djl
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - - Another pair of strong pitching performances rounded out the 2016 nonconference schedule for the Wilmington University softball team, but the Wildcats needed a 6-0 game two victory to split the doubleheader, falling on a walk-off, 1-0, in the opener at Shippensburg on Monday.
An unearned run in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Red Raiders (16-23) to take the opener before the bats came alive in the nightcap for the Wildcats (27-19), collecting nine hits to back another strong outing in the circle.
Danielle Bradley struck out five while only allowing five hits and one walk in the opener, but the bats were held to three hits in the game, as they couldn't solve Shippensburg starter Taryn Wilson.
Brooklyn Lachette gave the Wildcats their first hit of the game with a one-out double to left center in the third, but she was left stranded at third base as Wilson picked up a key strikeout before getting Becca Stanley to line out to the center fielder. Lachette added a two-out single in the fifth before Colby Wyatt started the seventh with a leadoff single. But a sac bunt attempt was hit too hard and the force out was recorded at second to thwart any rally for the Wildcats.
A miscue in right field to start the bottom of the seventh allowed a lead off single to get to second base before a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third with just one out. Bradley earned the second out on a strikeout, but the Red Raiders scored the game-winner on a jam shot through the right side, just past the outstretched reach of Lachette at second.
The bats came alive early in the nightcap, as Shannon Brantley put the Wildcats on the board in the first inning with a two-out single up the middle, scoring Wyatt from third.
Freshman Caitlyn Whiteside set the Red Raiders down in order in both the first and second innings, bringing the offense back to the plate in the third. Wyatt started things with a one-out double before standing on third after a wild pitch. Lachette gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with an RBI groundout.
The Red Raiders put their first runner on base in the third on a hit-by-pitch, but Whiteside picked up the final two outs to leave the runner at second. The offense continued to plug away in the fifth, as Kaitlyn Slater started the inning with a leadoff single. With runners on second and third, Lachette picked up another RBI with a sacrifice fly, hitting the ball deep enough to score Slater from third.
Whiteside finally allowed a hit in the bottom of the fifth, but quickly erased the Red Raiders in the inning with a grounder to short. After another 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, the offense broke the game open in the seventh.
Keara McCarthy put runners on first and second with one out with a single to center before Wyatt followed with another single up the middle, scoring Lexi Baughman from second. Now with two outs, Brantley poked one to right field for an RBI single before Stanley capped the scoring by beating out an infield single to short.
Shippensburg started the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single, but couldn't get anything more off the freshman, as Whiteside induced a fly ball, a foul out, and an ground ball to end the game.

The course conditions at Back Creek Golf Club were ideal and so was the weather, except for a wind that had many players throwing grass and rethinking club selection. Still, it was a competitive round in which 14 of 50 players broke 80 and 35 are within 10 shots of the lead.

Brown went out in 39 and came in with 41 to shoot a nine-over-par 80. Primeau came in with 40 that included a birdie on the seemingly endless par-five 16th hole, finishing with 81.

Chris Mandia (Catskill, NY) is tied for 26th with 82, fellow junior Tom Hannig (Claymont, DE/Concord) sits tied for 31st with 83 and sophomore Barry Frankel (Sykesville, MD) is tied for 46th with 88. Andrew Geesey of Felician holds the lead with a two-over-par 73.

GBC is eighth with 326 and Wilmington (DE) holds the lead with 302.

Final-round action at the 36-hole championship commences Wednesday at 8:00 am.

His three-run homer in the fifth inning on Friday night against Missouri starter Reggie McClain highlighted a five-run inning as LSU erased a 2-1 deficit and went on to post a 7-5 victory.

Jordan is batting .312 on the year with four doubles, three homers and 20 RBI. He has a .455 on-base percentage and has been hit by a pitch on 15 occasions already this season. UBJECT: LeBrun Collects 100 Career Points on Senior Day as Wilmington Women's Lacrosse Picks Up 18-12 CACC Victory over Post
DATE: April 23, 2016
djl
NEWARK, Del. - - A five-goal stretch in the middle portion of the second half propelled the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Prior to the game the team honored its lone senior, Sara LeBrun, and the left-handed attacker gave the crowd two goals and an assist, giving her 100 career points in two seasons as a Wildcat (4-10, 4-4 CACC).
The Wildcats scored the first four goals of the game, but found themselves in a battle as Post scored the final three goals of the first half to close the gap to 10-6 heading into the break.
Gabby Spalt put the Wildcats ahead, 11-6, with the first goal of the second half, but then Post closed to within 11-8 with 24:46 to play with back-to-back goals. That is when the Wildcats' offense took over.
Megan Card finished a successful clear with an unassisted goal, going right down the middle of the field for her 14th goal of the season. LeBrun then found La'Dae Boykin from the side of the goal to put the Wildcats ahead, 13-8, with 17:55 to play.
Marisa Parker caused a turnover and Mikailla Spencer scooped up the ground ball to set the Wildcats up for another scoring chance. LeBrun scored her second goal of the game and 33rd of the season on a free-position opportunity, putting the Wildcats ahead, 14-8, with 13:12 to play.
Out of a Post timeout, Card secured another draw control and Sam Foster put away her eighth goal of the season with 10:59 left on the scoreboard. Foster's goal gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 16-8.
Post tried to make a game of it with under 10 minutes to play, as they scored three straight goals to cut the deficit to 16-11 with 3:34 remaining.
Despite losing the ensuing draw, Card forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball to go the other way. Foster then finished off an outstanding individual effort, splitting three defenders to put the Wildcats back on the board and end the Eagles' run.
Card picked up the next draw and Boykin finished a one-timer from Spalt to ice the game for the Wildcats, 18-11, with 1:51 to play.
Boykin led all Wildcats with five goals, adding two assists for seven points. The sophomore also added five draws and three caused turnovers. Spalt dished out a team high five assists while adding four goals for a team high nine points in the win. Card finished with two goals and three assists, but led the team with eight draws and added three caused turnovers. Foster added a hat trick with three goals on three shots for the Wildcats.
Shawna Chopko led the defense with six caused turnovers on the afternoon, adding five ground balls. Maddie Hurm made nine saves while also scooping up three ground balls.
The Wildcats have one game remaining in the regular season, as they head to Holy Family on Thursday for the season finale. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The bulk of the 2016 schedule will once again come from within the CACC, as the Wildcats will have to fend off 12 conference opponents to defend its 2015 CACC Regular Season crown. The team’s non-conference schedule finishes up in the beginning of October, hosting reigning NCAA Division II East Regional Champion LIU Post on Saturday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m. The Wildcat then host Bridgeport in their final non-conference game on Tuesday, October 4.

Throughout the rest of October, the Wildcats will host Georgian Court, Concordia, and Nyack in CACC contests, while also heading to Felician, Post, Philadelphia, Goldey-Beacom, and Dominican before the start of postseason.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Announces 2016 Schedule

Goldey-Beacom’s men’s soccer squad always faces a tough schedule and the 2016 version that was released should prove to be no different.
The 18-game regular-season journey commences September 1 at Pittsburgh-Johnstown and continues six days later with the home opener vs. Saint Thomas Aquinas. Play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference starts September 10 at Nyack.
Once late September rolls around, things really start to pick up for GBC and that includes a contest at reigning CACC champion Bloomfield on the 24th. A road game at Dominican (NY) on October 8 will be a formidable test and Homecoming Weekend features a contest October 15 against Caldwell.
The two final league games feature the top two teams from last year’s standings. The Lightning visit second-place Post on October 22 before hosting regular-season champion Wilmington (DE) on the 25th. Wilmington last season advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The league’s top eight teams compete in the CACC Tournament, which begins November 1. The semifinals and final take place later that week in Lakewood, NJ.
The Lightning (7-12, 5-7 CACC) a season ago posted two shutouts in their final two games to clinch their first conference tournament spot since 2009. This included a 1-0 victory over Bloomfield and a 3-0 blanking of Holy Family.
Sophomore goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) was an integral part of last year’s success and once again should play a key role. He closed 62nd in the country with 72 saves, 102nd with 4.0 per game and tied for seventh in the CACC with seven victories.
Junior Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) is back at forward after endingtied for 32nd in the CACC with nine points last season and tied for 22nd with four goals. Junior Rerom Delys (Vila Velha, Brazil), who this summer played for Tormenta FC in Georgia, and sophomore Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) each closed tied for second on the squad with eight points.

GBC then plays four of its next five games on the road, with the lone game in Pike Creek being Homecoming Weekend on October 1 against Felician.

The Lightning are home October 12 vs. reigning CACC champion Philadelphia U. and league play ends October 26 at home against Wilmington (DE).

The league’s top eight teams make the CACC tournament, which starts October 31. The semifinals and final will be held later that week in Lakewood, NJ.

GBC (8-10, 5-7 CACC) last season made the conference tournament a second straight year, marking the first time this happened since the squad went four consecutive seasons from 2003-06.

A key returnee this season is junior midfielder Amy Runciman (Luton, England), who last year was tabbed first team All-CACC, second team CCA All-East Region and third team NSCAA All-East Region. She also closed eighth in the country with 0.56 assists per game, 12th with 10 assists, 31st with 1.67 points per game, and her 10 goals, 10 assists and 30 points all were among the top six single-season marks in school history.

Runciman enters the year tied for third in school history with 16 assists and 10th with 40 points.

Senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) returns for her fourth season as the squad’s starting goalkeeper. A key part of the defense, she enters the year second in school history with eight shutouts, third with a 2.16 save percentage and fourth with 169 saves.

Junior Kelsey Vick (Clarksboro, NJ/Paul VI) closed third on the team last year with 17 points, senior Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ/Hightstown) was fourth with 16 that included seven goals and sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) amassed 13 points.

The prolific history of Goldey-Beacom’s women’s tennis program once again should take another step forward this season as the squad was picked to end second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference based on a vote by the league’s coaches.

GBC (8-7, 4-3 CACC) has made the CACC Tournament eight straight years, the longest streak of any team in school history, and that includes four trips to the final. The Lightning last season had four singles players close above .500 and the team recorded late-season victories over Philadelphia U. and Caldwell to end in fourth place.

One of those key players was senior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany), who amassed a 9-6 singles record that included 8-5 at the third spot and an 8-7 mark in doubles. Sengl also was presented the league’s Women’s Tennis Top XV Award for having the best GPA among those participating at the league championship.

Sengl enters the campaign sixth in school history with 33 doubles wins and eighth with 31 singles triumphs.

Senior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England), a key player from the historic 2014-15 squad, posted an 11-3 doubles mark and won a first-round match in the “A” singles flight at the ITA Championship in a year she competed at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) had a solid debut campaign last season, closing 8-4 in singles and 6-3 in doubles, and will be one of the players counted on this year.

GBC received a pair of first-place votes and Chestnut Hill got the top spot with six first-place nods. The league once again will have eight teams with Concordia (NY), the seven-time reigning CACC champion, suspending its program and Wilmington (DE) introducing the sport.

The league’s top five teams will compete in the CACC Tournament, beginning October 18. The fourth and fifth seeds will battle in a first-round tie with the winner joining the remaining three teams in the semifinals.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season September 1 at LIU Post on the same Brookville, NY courts in which it beat Chestnut Hill, 5-3, in 2015 for the school’s first head-to-head NCAA Tournament victory in any sport. The home opener is September 14 vs. Wilmington at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Tennis Poll

1. Chestnut Hill 61 pts. (6 first-place votes)

2. Goldey-Beacom 53 pts. (2)

3. Post 46 pts.

4. Philadelphia U. 40 pts.

5. U. of the Sciences 28 pts.

6. Holy Family 26 pts.

7. Caldwell 21 pts.

SUBJECT: Sharp First Half Shooting Carries Women’s Basketball to 80-71 Victory over Lincoln in Final Nonconference Contest

DATE: December 30, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The hot shooting of the Wilmington University women’s basketball team allowed the Wildcats to lead wire-to-wire in an 80-71 nonconference contest over Lincoln (Pa.) on Friday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (5-8) jumped out to a large lead in the first half, shooting 52.6 percent from the floor while hitting 6-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc to jump out to a 48-27 halftime lead. The Lions (3-9) closed the gap by winning the third and fourth quarters by six points each, but the deficit was too large to overcome down the stretch.

The hot shooting began right off the bat for the Wildcats, as they went 10-of-19 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point land in the first quarter. Layups from Macy Robinson and Emma Matthews, followed by free throws from LaShyra Williams quickly put the Wildcats ahead, 6-0.

Matthews hit the first three-pointer of the game before Robinson followed with back-to-back triples to put the home team ahead, 23-12, with less than a minute to play in the quarter. Jocelyn Rodriguez capped the first quarter with an old fashioned three-point play, doubling up the Lions, 26-13, after 10-minutes of play.

The Wildcats continued to extend the lead in the second quarter, as they shot 8-of-15 from the floor, including a perfect 3-of-3 from deep. A Matthews three put the Wildcats ahead, 31-15, before Robinson and Jasmine Lee hit back-to-back treys to give the home team a 39-17 lead. The Wildcats were stuck on 41 points for nearly three minutes of game-time before they rattled off another 7-0, capped by a Robinson three-point play to head into the halftime break leading 48-27.

The shooting cooled off for the Wildcats but their 21-point halftime lead was good enough to hold off Lincoln down the stretch. The Lions won the third quarter, 20-14, before taking the fourth quarter, 24-18, but didn’t get the game back to within 10-point until 41 seconds to play. Two free throws cut the Wildcats’ lead to 78-69 with 20 seconds left before settling on the final score, 80-71.

Robinson finished with her first double-double of the year for the Wildcats, scoring a team-high 19 points while also grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. She went 7of-10 from the floor, hitting 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Lee came off the bench to score 17 points, also shooting 7-of-10 from the floor. Matthews finished with 16 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor while hitting 2-of-4 three-pointers. Williams was the final Wildcat in double figures with 13 points.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Wildcats in their final nonconference game of the season. They will finish the 2017 portion of their season with all Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game, starting on Wednesday at Felician. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.

NEWARK, Del. - - A strong second half carried the Wilmington University men’s basketball team to an 85-68 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Caldwell on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Rallies for 69-63 Win Over Holy Family

Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) scored 20 points and sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) canned the go-ahead 3-pointer for Goldey-Beacom, which rallied in the second half for an historic 69-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Holy Family at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Holy Family led most of the way, building a 52-42 lead with 1:15 left in the third quarter courtesy of a 14-6 run that required just under five minutes. Jill Conroy scored six points in that span for the Tigers and Abigail Iannotti continued what was a dominating night with four.

The Lightning then struck for the next 10 points to forge a 52-52 tie with 8:38 to play. Junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) netted five points in that time and Turner-Rush buried a 3-pointer.

The lead would not be more than three for almost the entire quarter and Holy Family took its final advantage, 63-62, with 2:15 to go when Conroy hit two free throws.

GBC on its next possession worked the ball inside to Bryson and then she kicked it out to Turner-Rush, who canned a huge 3-pointer with 2:01 to play to give her side a 65-63 margin.

The teams traded missed 3-pointers before Holy Family got the ball with under a minute left. Conroy was looked at to deliver the equalizer, but she missed and Bryson hauled in the rebound. Bruno then had her number called and she came through on a layup with 28 seconds left for a 67-63 game that all but ended things.

Turner-Rush scored 15 points on five 3-pointers with Bryson netting 13 points and freshman Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA) adding 11 for the Lightning, who have won four of their last five games.

Iannotti simply was a sight to watch with 24 points on 11-of-20 shooting and 18 rebounds in an astonishing performance. Conroy added 22 for the Tigers (5-15, 4-8 CACC), who shot 40 percent (25-of-62) from the floor.

GBC (13-8, 9-3) notched its first victory in Pike Creek against Holy Family in 17 all-time tries and remains one game in back of U. of the Sciences (10-2) for first place in the CACC South Division. The victory also was the 50th for fourth-year coach Bethann Burke.

SUBJECT: Second Half Shooting Saves Slow First Half As Wilmington Men’s Basketball Downs Chestnut Hill, 70-63, on Senior Night

DATE: February 15, 2017

NEWARK, Del. - - The second half shooting of the Wilmington University men’s basketball team spurred the Wildcats to a much needed 70-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Chestnut Hill on Senior Night on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

The win, coupled with a Goldey-Beacom loss to USciences, puts both teams at 13-4 in the South Division and in a tie for second place. The Wildcats are 18-8 overall while the Lightning fall to 19-5 overall. The two teams meet for the second time this season on Saturday night at the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington. The Wildcats took the first meeting this season.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats got off to a slow start in the first half, maybe due to the standing room only crowd on hand to witness the Senior Night ceremonies of four Wildcats during pregame. The Wildcats only shot 8-for-34 (23.5 percent) from the floor in the first half, including just 3-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc. Their saving grace was hitting 9-of-11 from the foul line. All that being said, the Wildcats were a three-pointer at the buzzer rimming out from being tied at the half, going into the break trailing, 31-28.

The second half started with a bang for the Wildcats, as senior Tajee Almon came up with a big block on the first defensive opportunity, leading to a game-tying three-pointer by fellow senior Brian Adkins at the other end.

The Griffins were able to harness the fast start for the Wildcats and took a 40-35 lead with 15:47 showing on the clock. That’s when Omari Dill-Pettiford started a 7-0 run with a layup before senior Drew Johnson II hit a three-pointer and senior Tyaire Ponzo-Meek finished off a Nick Richards pick for the Wildcats’ first lead of the second half with 13:58 to paly.

Another defensive steal led to an old fashioned three-point play for Ponzo-Meek as he was starting to heat up in the second half after shooting 0-for-7 with only two points in the first half. His free-throw gave the Wildcats the a 47-42 lead with 10:56 left on the clock. The Wildcats wouldn’t relinquish the lad from there on out.

Ponzo-Meek sandwiched three-pointers around a Johnson three-pointer to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 62-53, with 4:08 remaining. The Griffins (5-19, 2-15 CACC) got to within five point on a couple occasions, but the Wildcats went 6-of-6 from the foul line down the stretch for the victory.

After the slow start, Ponzo-Meek finished with a game-high 19 points, adding six rebounds, an assist, and two blocked shots. Johnson hit three three-pointers while going 5-of-6 from the foul like for 16 points, adding seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocks as well. Richards added 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double. Richards also added five assists and two steals.

The Wildcats take to the road for their two final regular season contests, both with playoff implications as the Wildcats are trying to host a first-round game. Goldey-Beacom is up first on Saturday with the tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. - - A plethora of scoring in front of a packed house on Senior Night was not enough for the Wilmington University women’s basketball team to get a win. They were defeated by Chestnut Hill College, 95-85, in central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats (12-14, 9-8 CACC) were leading 25-17 after the first quarter, but failed to keep the pedal on the gas as the Griffins outscored them 22-10 in the second quarter. The Griffins (16-8, 11-6 CACC) took the lead in the second quarter and never looked back, as they led the game for a total of 22:22 of the entire game. The lead changed only two times, as control was steadily maintained by Chestnut Hill once they took the lead.

The Griffins shot an impressive 51.5 percent in this game, hitting 79.2 percent of their free throws, which proved to be important at the end of the game. The away team scored a total of 44 points in the paint, compared to the Wildcats’ 24 points. The Wildcats were able to stick around by forcing the Griffins into 25 turnovers, turning them into 27 points at the other end.

LaShyra Williams led the Wildcats in scoring tonight with 25 points, and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Williams was the only Wildcat to play all 40 minutes. Macy Robinson hit four three-pointers, three of which came in the first half, which helped her accumulate a total of 16 points. Jasmine Lee also joined in on the high scoring contest with 17 points of her own. Although the box score shows that Wilmington didn’t hold a lead since the second quarter, they kept it close by never letting the lead get larger than 10 points.

Trailing by 10 points with 8:41 left in regulation, the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to close to within 73-69 with 6:32 to play. Down seven once more, the Wildcats went on another 7-1 spurt to close to within 77-76 with 4:28 showing on the clock.

Down four points, Nyree Grant missed a layup from point blank with just under two minute to play and the Wildcats were never able to recover. The Griffins scored the next five points and extended the lead back out to as many as 10 point before settling on the final.

There were playoff implications on tonight’s game, as the Wildcats had a chance to possibly move eerily close to the second and third place spots in the CACC. With the loss they sit two games back of Goldey-Beacom and Chestnut Hill in the second and third spots, respectively, in the conference.

Jocelyn Rodriguez played 39 minutes and scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds, added three steals, and led the team in assists with four. The tenacity and intensity was certainly there for the Wildcats, as they had a team total of 16 steals.

The Wildcats travel to crosstown rivals Goldey-Beacom on Saturday with a chance to stay in front of Philadelphia for the fourth and final playoff spot form the South Division. The opening tip is set for 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night at the Jones Center.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Handed Crushing 74-73 Loss by University of the Sciences

Goldey-Beacom led practically throughout, but gave up a couple of key late baskets and left the Jones Center in Wilmington with a tough 74-73 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference setback from University of the Sciences.

GBC led by as many as 11 and held a 63-53 cushion with 9:30 left. USciences then began to chip away and an 11-2 run over just 2 1/2 minutes got it within 65-64 with seven minutes left. Bryan Okolo scored five points in that time and Jon McGill capped it with a 3-pointer.

The Lightning held a 67-66 lead when senior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) hit a massive layup and was fouled by Will Gregorits that got the crowd going. Swint converted the old-fashioned three-point play with 5:15 to go for a four-point game and all looked real good for the home side.

But GBC suddenly could not buy a basket and USciences could. Beni Toure hit a jumper with 4:06 to go for a 70-68 contest and Gregorits made amends on a layup with 3:06 remaining for a tie game.

Empty possessions followed and for a while, no one wanted the lead. Okolo stepped up as his layup with 1:20 to go made it 72-70 and gave USciences its first lead since 2-0.

Sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) missed a 3-pointer for the Lightning and senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) hauled in a big offensive rebound. Ridgeway-Higgs then tried to tie it on a jumper, but he missed and grabbed his own rebound. Finally the ball ended up in the hands of Swint, who canned a 3-pointer from the left wing with 51 seconds left for a 73-72 lead.

The Devils benefitted from a Lightning timeout and they looked to regain the advantage. McGill again came through, getting a pass from Toure and hitting from the right baseline with 23 seconds to go for a 74-73 contest.

GBC milked the clock looking for a good shot, but Wilson misfired in close before Okolo grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 3.5 seconds left. However, he missed both and GBC called timeout after getting the rebound.

Now the Lightning had to go the length of the court in 3.1 seconds, but they could not get off a shot and were handed their second straight loss that followed a school-record 12-game winning streak.

Wilson scored 15 points, Swint netted 14, senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) and junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) scored 13 apiece with Ridgeway-Higgs getting 11 for GBC, which entered ninth in the first NCAA East Region rankings of the year.

McGill scored 21 points, Okolo netted 18, Toure poured in 15 and Gregorits added 13 for the Devils, who shot 58 percent (28-of-48) from the floor and only led for 81 seconds. USciences (12-14, 10-8 CACC) holds a 1 1/2 game lead over Holy Family (8-9) for the fourth and final spot in the CACC Tournament from the South Division.

GBC (19-5, 13-4) drops into a second-place tie with Wilmington (13-4) and both are one-half game behind Philadelphia U. (13-3). The latter faces Georgian Court (1-24) on Thursday.

Goldey-Beacom and Wilmington will do battled at the Jones Center on Saturday in a massive contest at 6:00 pm. Please note GBC will be host “Hoop it Up” for our alumni and parents of student-athletes during the game. To RSVP your attendance, please RSVP the alumni office at alumni@gbc.edu.
