Blue Hens Drop Towson 1-0 for First CAA Win

TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team earned its first Colonial Athletic Association victory Sunday afternoon, as the Blue Hens dropped regional rival Towson University 1-0 at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

Delaware (4-5-2, 1-1 CAA) scored the lone goal of the match in the 76th minute when Gabby Johnson buried a penalty kick. The Hens were awarded the PK when Hannah Specht was tripped up inside the Towson (3-6-2, 0-1 CAA) 18-yard box.

Senior Kailyn Rekos was not tested all afternoon as the goalie faced just four TU shots, none of which landed on goal.

The Blue Hens return to action Thursday night at Northeastern. Kickoff from Parsons Field is slated for 6 p.m.

Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro:

“I’m proud of the trajectory of our group is heading towards the past few days. We started the weekend feeling like we let one slip away, but our response in the two training sessions plus today’s performance were steps in the right direction. In the CAA we are going to need to really work hard and earn everything. Today we did that from start to finish, and it was a complete game. The PK was a well-earned opportunity. We’ve been focusing on movement in the final third and Hannah Specht made a very unselfish run to get into space and draw the foul. Then Gabby Johnson, a freshman, stepped up and buried the kick which was a gutsy moment for her. I’m very proud.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
Delaware improves to 16-7-2 all-time against Towson.
The Blue Hens attempted a penalty kick for the first time this season.
Half of Delaware’s 10 goals have been scored by freshmen.
Barroqueiro earned his first career CAA victory.
Johnson scored her second goal of the season.

Four for Goldey-Beacom Garner CACC Weekly Honors

It was Weekly Honor Rolls all around for Goldey-Beacom from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with men soccer sophomore Nicolas Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia), women’s soccer junior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland), volleyball freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD) and men’s cross country junior Jono Hooper (Brisbane, Australia) so chosen.

Jaramillo scored one of his biggest goals to date, finding the back of the net 2:06 into the second overtime to give Goldey-Beacom a big 2-1 victory Saturday over Bloomfield. Jaramillo’s first goal of the season and third career puts Goldey-Beacom (6-3, 3-2 CACC) in fourth place in the league.

Crammond scored twice Wednesday for Goldey-Beacom in the squad’s 3-1 road victory at Wilmington (DE). She tapped in a free kick from senior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead and then converted a free kick in the second half for the final, giving her three goals this season and 13 career.

Goldey-Beacom (6-0-1, 5-0 CACC) is off to its best start in school history both overall and in the conference.

Haley ended the week with 50 kills, 30 digs, five aces and three blocks over three matches. She dominated play Saturday vs. Felician, getting 25 kills and 15 digs with two aces and a block in Goldey-Beacom’s 3-1 win. Haley also got 14 kills and 10 digs Friday at Jefferson to go with 11 kills Tuesday at Holy Family.

Hooper again was the spotlight for Goldey-Beacom, ending third Friday in 29:01.9 at the GBC Fall Classic. It was his third top-20 finish in as many races this season and helped the Lightning close third.

Founded in 1886, the College offers graduate and undergraduate degrees with majors in psychology, economics, criminal justice, English and all areas of business. With alumni from 26 states and 66 nations, Goldey-Beacom College is located in Pike Creek Valley, a suburb of Wilmington, Delaware. The College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs and the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education.

Outstanding Run for Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Ends at ITA East Region Concludes

A memorable journey for Goldey-Beacom’s women’s tennis squad at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region Championship came to an end Monday with great performances all around at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

Sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) advanced to the doubles final in defeating two teams seeded ahead of them. That includes the number 12th seed’s 9-7 triumph over freshman teammates and fifth-seeded Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) in the semifinals.

The journey ended in the final Monday morning against Alessia Rossetti and Lena Dimmer from New York Tech. After dropping the first set, the GBC tandem forced a match tiebreak before it was dealt a 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) setback.

Hortelano Pey then had just a 45-minute break before her singles semifinal vs Liza Dubrovskaya from Post. The former had reached this rung with a stunning 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) triumph over reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player and Rookie of the Year Karla Miletic from University of the Sciences.

The run for ninth-seeded Hortelano Pey was a great one, but concluded with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to the number four seed.

Also highlighting singles play was Zheng as the 13th seed reaching the quarterfinals with Lesscher y Post getting to the round of 16 as the 12th seed.

In addition to the two aforementioned doubles units, sophomore Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and junior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Ecuador) advanced to the round of 16.

Goldey-Beacom gets back into CACC play Wednesday against Wilmington (DE), starting at 3:00 pm at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington.

A great run for Goldey-Beacom at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region Championship saw freshman Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week and sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) tabbed to the Weekly Honor Roll.

Regner teamed with Hortelano Pey to advance to the ITA East Region Championship final. Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer’s Unbeaten Run Ends with 2-1 Loss at Daemen

The best start in the history of Goldey-Beacom’s women’s soccer program remains after eight matches, but saw its blemish with the team’s 2-1 loss at Daemen in Amherst, NY.

The Lightning’s unbeaten streak after seven games was the best after it opened 4-0 last year, but the unit will have to settle for 6-1-1. The 5-0 opening in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference remains best in team annals.

The Wildcats (5-2-1) opened a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Leah McDonell took a through pass from Celia de Pablo Esteban and scored her first goal of the season.

The Lightning squared things with 1:48 left in the first half. Junior Sophie Greenwood (Burnley, England) took a free kick that went off the hands of goalkeeper Maddie Flores and in for her first goal of the year.

But Daemen grabbed the lead for good in the 60th minute. Jamie Boyar got a look from the right wing and put a high shot inside the left post for her first goal of the campaign.

Goldey-Beacom possessed a 27-9 shots edge that included 12 attempts on cage, including eight from freshman Taylor Owen (East Pennsboro, PA) and four from Greenwood. Junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) made one save.

Flores kept the Wildcats in the contest with 11 saves and Boyar amassed four shots.

Goldey-Beacom has a short turnaround with a home match Wednesday against Lincoln (PA), starting at 3:00 pm.

UBJECT: Bridgeport Too Much in 3-1 Decision over Wilmington Women’s Soccer

DATE: September 27, 2017
djl

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women’s soccer team couldn’t hold onto an early lead on the road at Bridgeport, as the hosts scored three unanswered to take the nonconference game, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field.

It didn’t take long for the Wildcats (5-4-1) to get on the board, as Rebecca Dolhansky cashed in the first opportunity in the third minute, but the Purple Knights (3-4-2) scored twice late to take the nonconference contest.

Dolhansky took advantage of the game’s first chance, taking a long shot that drifted over the keeper’s head just 2:14 into the match. It was Dolhansky’s third goal of the season.

But the rest of the first half was all Bridgeport, as they went on to outshot the Wildcats, 12-2, in the half. Kierstyn Williams was called on to make 11 saves in the opening 45 minutes, but the Purple Knights were able to sneak one past her in the 29th minute. A turnover in the backfield allowed Sara Berglund to tie the match, 1-1, 28:55 into the contest.

The Purple Knights continued to put on the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Wildcats, 12-1, in the final stanza. But it wasn’t until the 76th minute that the Purple Knights were able to take the lead, immediately following the Wildcats’ lone shot of the half by La’Dae Boykin.

The Knights came down and got a cross off into the middle of the box. Amanda Ebbesson controlled the ball and hit a half-volley low and into the corner of the net to put the home team in front, 2-1.

Now with the Wildcats pressing forward, the Knights put the game away in the 87th minute. A through ball down the right side allowed Maegen Doyle to sneak behind the defense and finish for her fifth goal of the year, 3-1.

Williams recorded 16 saves in the match, four shy of tying Catie Joynes’ program mark of 20 set in 2005.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action and to the WU Athletics Complex when they host Caldwell on Saturday afternoon as part of a CACC doubleheader. The women kick things off with a match at 12:00 p.m.

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team hung tough against the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, but crosstown rivals Goldey-Beacom picked up the CACC win, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

Although the Lightning (5-0, 4-0 CACC) won 8-1, they had to work for it as the Wildcats (2-4, 1-1 CACC) went 8-5 in two of the of doubles matches, as well as one three-set singles match, and two set tiebreakers.

Begona Gomar and Tess Paya held a late lead at number two doubles before Goldey-Beacom ran away with it late, 8-5. Laura Gil and Sabrina Blasi-Smith fought back all match at number three doubles, but the Lightning held on for the 8-5 victory as well. Anrea Ribalta and Anushka Sathe also fell at number one singles, 8-2.

Paya was able to get the Wildcats on the board at number five singles, defeating Silvia Hortelano Pey, 7-5 and 6-1. Gomar went the distance against Lotte Lesscher y Post at number one singles, taking the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-1). But the Lightning freshman fought back to take the second set, 6-4, and the third set tiebreak, 10-4.

Ribalta forced a tiebreak to settle the first set at number four singles, but fell 7-6 (7-5) and 6-1. Laura Gil dropped another point at number two singles, 6-3 and 6-4, while Anushka Sathe fell to East Regional No. 17 Anna Hortelano Pey, 6-3 and 6-1, at number three singles. Blasi-Smith rounded out the scores with a 6-0 and 6-1 loss at number six singles.

The Wildcats remain in CACC action and remain with their tough early season schedule on Saturday, as they head to Post for a 1:00 p.m. first serve. The Eagles knocked the Wildcats out of the CACC Tournament last season in the semifinals.

Subject: DELAWARE WOMEN'S SOCCER: Rekos Shines, but Early Goal Pushes Northeastern Past Delaware
To:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: September 28, 2017

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer program dropped a 1-0 contest at Northeastern Thursday night. The Blue Hens (4-6-2, 1-2 CAA) received a dominant performance in net from Kailyn Rekos, but an early goal by Huskies (8-4-1, 2-0-1 CAA) forward Hannah Rosenblatt proved to be the difference.

Rosenblatt scored the game-winner in the fifth minute, burying a shot after Rekos initially saved a penalty kick attempt from the forward. The penalty kick was awarded to Northeastern after Delaware was whistled for a handball in their own 18-yard box.

Delaware recorded a pair of shots in the match, with Lexi Faulmino recording a shot on goal. Rekos made six saves.

UD returns home to Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium this Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Hens host UNCW.

Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro:

"Anytime we come with a loss, we're going to be disappointed. We struggled to get into any type of rhythm in the first half, but we made a few changes and played better in the second half. Credit to Northeastern, they played well, but I felt we did not have our best performance especially in the first half. You can't beat good teams when you do that."

HEN SCRATCHINGS

• Delaware had won back-to-back matches against Northeastern coming into the match.

• The Blue Hens dropped to 2-4-2 away from home this season.

• Delaware was shutout for the fourth time this season, and have scored just two goals in the last six matches.

In a game which saw all the goals scored in the first seven minutes, Goldey-Beacom continued its best overall and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference starts in team history with a 2-1 victory over Post at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

GBC (8-1-1, 6-0 CACC) remains tied with Georgian Court (6-0) atop the league and both hold a one-game edge over third-place Holy Family (5-1) and Wilmington (5-1). Goldey-Beacom and Georgian Court will meet October 10 in Lakewood, NJ.

The Lightning got off to a 1-0 start in the fifth minute. Freshman Rose Benjamin (North East, MD) fed a pass to senior Amy Runciman (Luton, England), who launched one just outside the box and inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season.

Runciman now has 74 points, putting her in a tie with former teammate Alex Smith (2011-14) for second place in school history. Her 24 career goals has her fourth in team annals.

Just over a minute later, freshman Taylor Owen (East Pennsboro, PA) got on the scoresheet for a 2-0 GBC cushion. She received a long pass from junior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) and buried one, becoming the fifth player this year on the squad with at least three goals.

Post halved the deficit in the seventh minute with Fenna Maarse converting a pass from Angela Ciarmella inside the left post for her fifth of the campaign.

GBC more than held its own the rest of the way, closing with a 22-13 shots edge that included 12-4 in the opening half. It is the first time the Lightning have won consecutive meetings from the Eagles since taking the first six encounters from 2001-05.

Runciman attempted seven shots, freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) recorded five and junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) had four saves for the Lightning.

Hope Wilson recorded four shots and Hannah Richards notched five saves for the Eagles (3-7, 3-3).

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday is at Jefferson, formerly Philadelphia University, for a 4:00 pm contest.

SUBJECT: Two First Half Goals Stand Tall as Wilmington Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Caldwell

DATE: September 30, 2017

NEWARK, Del. - - A pair of first half goals stood tall for the Wilmington University women’s soccer team on Saturday, as they took a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest, 2-0, over Caldwell at the WU Athletics Complex.

The win keeps the Wildcats (6-4-1, 5-1 CACC) a game behind the CACC leaders while the Cougars (4-5, 3-3 CACC) slip to sixth place in the standings.

In an evenly contested first half, the Wildcats were able to strike first, getting a goal from leading goal scorer Loran Wyrough in the 28th minute. A foul right in front of the Cougar bench resulted in a set piece for the Wildcats, and Rebecca Dolhansky played a perfect ball into the box. Forcing the keeper to come out , but far enough away to keep it from the netminder’s reach, Dolhansky’s ball found Wyrough on the other side, and she finished it with her head for the 1-0 lead.

Still holding the 1-0 lead, the Wildcats were able to strike again just before the halftime break. Using another set piece, the Wildcats went ahead 2-0 in the 44th minute. Dolhansky started the set piece near the corner flag, sending one to the middle of the box. Wyrough flicked the ball on to the back post, finding a wide-open Melissa Gall for her second goal of the year with 1:11 remaining in the half.

The Wildcats needed goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams in the second half to secure the shutout and the victory, as the Cougars had multiple opportunities. From in close, Williams made back-to-back saves at 62:56 and 63:05 to keep the visitors off the board. Williams made her last save with 2:41 left, guiding the ball out of bounds for corner.

Williams made five saves in the second half alone, making eight total for her third shutout of the season. The Wildcats and Cougars each took 14 shots, and earned five corners in the contest.

The Wildcats head to Georgian Court on Wednesday for a midweek road test before returning to the WU Athletics Complex for Wilmington’s 2017 Homecoming Weekend. Their game at Georgian Court is set for a 3:30 p.m. start.

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team was upended, 6-3, by the Clippers of Concordia who won their fifth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Clippers (5-0, 5, 0 CACC) won 6-3, the matches were hard fought battles as the Wildcats (2-5, 1-2 CACC) lost in doubles 8-5, 8-5 and won a tough match 9-8 (7-2).

Concordia won seven consecutive CACC Tournament Championships, with the last coming in 2015 before the program took a year’s hiatus in 2016.

The team of Tess Paya and Begona Gomar found a way to win the No. 3 doubles by a score of 9-8 after a 7-2 tie breaker to decide the match.

Gomar dropped her number one singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 and Laura Gil was able to force a third set in her number two singles but eventually lost 6-2, 4-6, and 6-1. Jane Malygina, plying in her first match as a Wildcat, put the Wildcats on the board in number three singles with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win after forcing a tie breaker in the second set. After winning the first set at fourth singles, 6-3, Anushka Sathe could not find a way to finish off the Clippers’ freshman Josefina Torres and dropped the next two sets 6-3, and 6-2.

In number five singles Andrea Ribalta won the first set, 6-2, then dropped her next set 6-1 to junior Tadi Mrewa before putting her away 6-1 to secure another point for the Wildcats. Paya lost a tie break heartbreaker in the first set of her number six singles, 7-6 (8-6), then bounced right back and took the next set, 6-4. The third set was halted at 3-0 because of retirement to end the match and the day for the Wildcats.

First Half Fireworks Push Hens to 2-0 Victory Over UNCW

By Delaware Athletics

Oct 1, 2017

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team turned in its most dominant performance of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating UNCW 2-0 at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The Blue Hens (5-6-2, 2-2 CAA) took the early advantage just three minutes into the match when sophomore forward Jillian Vassallo found a streaking Andrea Gunderson in the box. Gunderson took the perfect cross and drilled a shot into the top of the net. Just 30 minutes later, freshman Gabby Johnsonscored her team-leading third goal of the season when Michelle Burnett found the freshman deep inside the UNCW (5-7-2, 1-2-1 CAA) 18-yard box.

Delaware rode the two early goals to the finish line, as the Hens dropped the Seahawks 2-0. Senior Kailyn Rekos earned her second shutout of the season, recording four saves.

Senior Andrea Gunderson:

“Scoring today was a pretty awesome feeling. I’m just happy I could put the ball into the back of the net and get the momentum started for our team. That was something we talked about, starting quickly so we can pressure our opponents. We’ve made a few tactical changes this season with the new coaching staff. We have a new style of play, but more importantly a new mentality. They pushed us from the start of training and into the season. I think that’s allowing us to push ourselves even further and put the ball into the back of the net.”

On moving up in the CAA:

“I think today sets us on a good path, but we just raised the bar and set the new standard. Today’s result shows what we can do over the remaining five matches of the season. We now just have to keep raising the bar over the next five games.”

Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro:

“I thought the girls worked really hard today. I thought we played really good soccer. It was a great response by the girls, especially in the first half. In the second half, we knew that we were going to have to grind out results in this league. I thought the girls did a really good job of adjusting the style, grinding out the result.”

On Gunderson:

“Gunny is one of those people that when you talk about facilitating change she’s been at the forefront. I think it definitely doesn’t happen without the whole senior class, Gunny included. She’s the heart and soul of this team. For her to get on the scoresheet was poetic justice. She does so many things for this team that don’t show up on stat sheets.”

On closing out CAA play:

“We like playing at home. We have a great stadium. It’s a great place to play, and it’s a great atmosphere. The girls are always excited when they get a chance to play here. Drexel is a really good opponent so it’s going to be another tough game. We’re going to have to bring good quality to the game and we’re going to need to grind out another result. No games are going to be easy going forward.”

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team got back on track with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over USciences, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The win snapped a two-match losing streak in the CACC for the Wildcats (3-5, 2-2 CACC), getting them back to .500 in the conference. The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the Devils (3-3, 2-3 CACC).

The match got off to a good start for the Wildcats, as they took two out of three double points to lead, 2-1, going into singles. Tess Paya and Begona Gomar started the momentum with an 8-2 win at number three doubles before Laura Gil and Andrea Ribalta played an outstanding match to come away with an 8-4 victory at number one singles. The Devils were able to get on the board at number two doubles, defeating Anushka Sathe and Jane Malygina, 8-5.

Paya (number six), Ribalta (number five), and Gil (number two) all carried their momentum from doubles into their singles matches, as all three took care of their opponent by common scores, 6-0 and 6-0, earning the match victory quite quickly. Malygina wasn’t far behind her teammates, as she took down her Devils opponent, 6-0 and 6-1, at number three singles.

The fifth ranked player in the East Region, according to the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Rankings from last spring, Karla Miletic was able to take care of Begona Gomar at number singles, 6-2 and 6-0. Danielle Paran earned the third point for the Devils, 6-2 and 6-3, at number four singles against Sathe, ending the afternoon at Delcastle.

The Wildcats stay in the CACC and travel to Caldwell for their next match on Thursday. They head to the Cougars with an anticipated 3:00 p.m. first service.
