Women's Fall Sports for 2017

Goldey-Beacom’s soccer teams on Sunday displayed the College’s latest showing of outreach and community service by lending a hand at Tender Hearts.

The event was part of Family Fitness Funday, organized by Tender Hearts. The student-athletes helped raise money to purchase custom-made bicycles for physically and developmentally impaired children. The Lightning’s soccer teams also played a big part in helping assist with arts and crafts stations, touch football, soccer, fitness competitions, food trucks and many other activities.

Goldey-Beacom over the last few years has lent a hand in community service ranging from cleanup on the Christiana River, assisting kids at local elementary school, raising money for Delaware Firefighters and helping with collections both around Thanksgiving and the December holidays, just to name a few.

The department in January 2016 was one of 25 finalists for the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence following its October 30, 2015 Halloween 5K Costume Run and Fun Walk that raised money for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

Tender Hearts is a non-profit organization dedicated to medically-fragile children and their families.

Dover, Del. (Oct. 16, 2017) --- The Delaware State women’s soccer team scored first, but couldn’t hold the lead, settling instead for a 1-1 tie against Maine Fort Kent in the Hornets’ 2017 home finale at Alumni Stadium Monday afternoon.

DSU opened the scoring when freshman Daijah Norris tallied her second goal of the season in the 24th minute (23:11). A corner kick by Julia Detweiler and perfect pass from Braxton Clark set up the point-blank shot by Norris, who leads the Hornets with two goals and four points.

Delaware State’s advantage held up for more than 44 minutes, but the Bengals battled back to tie the match in the second period.

Maine Fort Kent’s Sherifatu Sumalia fired a shot past Hornet goal keeper Leslie Fazio for an unassisted goal to tie the score in the 68th minute (67:20).

Each team had solid scoring chances in overtime, but failed to convert.

Fazio prevented Maine Fort Kent from scoring the go-ahead goal in the first overtime when she stopped a breakaway shot from 20 yards out by Sumalia early in the first overtime (94th minute).

Less than three minutes later, Delaware State’s Kalyn Fauntleroy missed high on a clear shot from 15 yards away.

In the second overtime, Fauntleroy again missed high on a good look and a late shot by Norris was saved by Bengal goal keeper Valentina Green.

Delaware State outshot Maine Fort Kent 19-15, also holding a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Fazio had four saves for the Hornets, while Green turned away 12 DSU shot attempts in the match.

The Hornets (1-12-2) will wrap up their 2017 schedule at NJIT on Wed. (Oct. 18). The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Newark, N.J.

The tie gives Maine Fort Kent a 9-1-3 record this season.

UBJECT: Four Student-Athletes Earn CACC Player of the Week Honors

DATE: October 18, 2017

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Four student-athletes from the Wilmington University athletics departments outperformed their counterparts last week, each earning a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week award as announce by the conference office on Tuesday.

Men’s Soccer’s Elliot Johnson was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week while women’s soccer’s Kiya Wilson earned the same accolades on the women’s side. Kierstyn Williams was also named the CACC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season. Women’s Tennis’ Begona Gomar was named the CACC Player of the Week as well.

Johnson (Essex, England) helped anchor the Wildcats’ defense to a pair of shutouts last week, defeating Chestnut Hill and Post by like scores of 3-0. The sophomore helped lead the defense in only allowing the Griffins eight shots (four on goal) and the Eagles seven shots (three on frame). It is the first such award in Johnson’s career.

On the women’s side, Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Williams (Middletown, Del.) helped lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 week as well.

Playing as the center back, Wilson anchored the defense that only allowed eight shots (three on goal) in a 2-0 shutout at Chestnut Hill. On Saturday, Post was only able to get six shots (three on goal) off in a 3-1 victory for the Wildcats. It is the first such award for the freshman in her career.

Williams was a part of her fifth shutout this season, the fourth all to herself. She made three saves in a 2-0 victory at Chestnut Hill and two more in a 3-1 victory over Post on Senior Day. She is now third in the CACC with a .785 save percentage and fourth with a 1.57 goals against average.

On the tennis courts, Gomar (Valencia, Spain) went a perfect 6-0 in leading the Wildcats to a 3-0 record last week. Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Left Heartbroken With Double OT Loss to Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom rallied to tie and then thought it had the game won, only to be dealt a crushing 2-1, double-overtime loss by Holy Family in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The first half was a continuous battle for momentum with the game scoreless and the Tigers holding a mere 6-5 shots edge.

But Holy Family struck first in the 55th minute. Brianna Rock won a one-on-one battle near midfield, went directly toward the cage and put a shot inside the right post.

The Lightning got even in the 59th minute. Freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) was taken down in the box and a penalty kick was awarded. Senior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) shockingly was called upon and she buried it, improving to 4-for-4 on penalties this season and 8-for-9 for her career.

GBC thought they had won it in the first overtime when senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) put home a rebound of Speaks’ saved shot, but the former was called for offside and the match continued.

It would go on until 1:54 elapsed in the second extra period, when Rock netted her team-leading 14th goal of the year. Hannah Derby fed a great pass down the right sideline and Rock put it just under the cross bar for the Lightning’s first home loss of the year on the new Bermuda Grass (7-1) and first home setback combined between the men’s and women’s outfits (15-1).

It was only appropriate a tightly contested match would end with each team level in shots at 16. Rock had seven for the Tigers and Speaks recorded four for the Lightning.

Emily Camp had a solid performance for Holy Family with seven saves, as did junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) for Goldey-Beacom with four.

GBC (10-4-1, 8-3 CACC) now sits tied for third with Wilmington (8-2) in the conference with 24 points with the latter having a game in hand. Both each have a three-point lead over Jefferson (7-3), which has two games left.

Holy Family (12-4, 9-1) is second in the league behind Georgian Court (10-0) and two meet next Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday for a doubleheader with the men’s squad at Caldwell, the final CACC regular-season contest for both this year. Please note the men’s contest is first at 11:00 am and the women follow at 1:30 pm.

SUBJECT: Jessica Unsihuay and Wilmington Women’s Soccer Upset Nationally #6 Adelphi, 1-0

DATE: October 19, 2017
djl

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - - For the first time in program history, the Wilmington University women’s soccer team defeated a nationally ranked opponent, defeating No. 6 Adelphi, 1-0, on Thursday night at Motamed Field.

A goal in the 53rd minute roved to be the difference as the Wildcats (10-5-1) gave nationally sixth and East Region No. 1 Adelphi (13-1) their first loss of the season. The Panthers are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA) National and Regional Polls.

Thursday was the first win over a nationally ranked team for the Wildcats, and only the second time they have scored against a nationally ranked opponent. They lost to No. 7 LIU Post, 2-1, in 2012.

The Panthers put the first three shots of the game on the board before the Wildcats’ Jessica Unsihuay put a shot on frame in the 27th minute. The Panthers would end up leading the Wildcats, 4-2, in shots at the halftime break.

The Wildcats came out of the break with a purpose, getting the first shot of the second half in the 50th minute off the foot of Rebecca Dolhansky resulting in a corner. The Wildcats would find the back of the net minutes later.

Preslie Quaranta put a cross into the box, drawing the goalkeeper off the line. The goalie dove but couldn’t come up with the ball, and Unsihuay was there to stuff the shot for the 1-0 lead 52:23 into the match. It was the freshman’s second goal of the season.

The Panthers turned up the pressure for the rest of the match, coming as close as a header that hit the post just a minute later. The Panthers outshot the Wildcats, 7-1, the rest of the second half, including a 7-0 advantage in corners after the goal.

But the Wilmington defense stood tall, anchored by Kierstyn Williams’ four saves in the second half to keep the Panthers scoreless. Williams made seven saves to record her fifth solo shutout and the team’s sixth of the season.

Thursday was the final nonconference contest of the regular season for the Wildcats, as they have two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contests remaining before the postseason. The Wildcats head to Concordia on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. opening kick.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team wrapped up its nonconference season with a 3-0 loss at Millersville on Thursday inside Pucillo Gymnasium.

The Wildcats countered with seven straight points of their own for the 15-14 lead, finished by a Miranda Shaw ace. But another 7-2 spurt by the home team gave the Marauders a 21-17 lead before they scored the final four points of the set to lead, 1-0, at 25-19.

Three straight points gave the Wildcats a 9-8 lead in the second set before Millersville went on a 5-0 run of their own for a 13-9 lead. A block by Erin Bistany and Brittany Ford tied the set at 17 before the Marauders went on a 7-1 run to gain set point, 24-18. The Wildcats wouldn’t go down easily, though, as Kills from Emma Kongevold, Genevieve Hughes and Bistany, to go along with a block by Kongevols and Bistany brought the Wildcats to within 24-22. But out of a timeout, a service error gave the home team the set, 25-22.

Millersville carried the momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead, forcing the Wildcats into a timeout. The Wildcats climbed back to 13-8, but the Marauders scored the next five points to regain an 18-8 lead. Another 3-0 spurt gave the Marauders a 23-11 lead before they finished the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.

Jill Braunsberg led the Wildcats with seven kills, adding seven assists, and a team high 11 digs on Thursday. Ford put down five kills while adding 10 digs for the Wildcats. Bistany and Rebecca Rawlinson contributed three block assists each while Eile Harris had the lone solo block of the night.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action for the rest of the season, heading to Post on Saturday for their next match. First service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.

Goldey-Beacom (10-0) advances to its second straight CACC final, looking to defend its crown, and awaits the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 seed Concordia (NY) and third-seeded Wilmington (DE). The final is Saturday at noon.

The Lightning then made quick work of the two points needed in singles. Regner got a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at fourth singles over Paran with Garcia Valle recording a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Jillyan Serrano.

The victory comes one day after the league’s yearly awards were presented. Regner was named Rookie of the Year, Hortelano Pey was tabbed first team a second straight year, Zheng was named first team, Lesscher y Post was picked second team and Joe Kissel for the fourth time was tabbed Coach of the Year.

REPEAT CHAMPIONS: Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Upends Wilmington (DE), 5-3, for Second Straight CACC Title

For the second straight year, Goldey-Beacom owned the spotlight. For the second straight year, sophomore Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) added the exclamation point.

Garcia Valle capped an incredible comeback to win her match and help Goldey-Beacom capture its second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title, 5-3 over Wilmington (DE) in Middlebury, CT.

With the second title in school history also comes the squad’s seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. The first and second rounds of the East Regional take place April 28-29 at a site to be determined.

The Lightning (11-0) were making their sixth trip to the conference final and appeared in consecutive seasons for the first time since going three straight years from 2009-11. The squad also won the 10th CACC title for the College and equaled its best start in school history.

Goldey-Beacom held a 4-3 lead in the tie and things did not look good for Garcia Valle, who at fifth singles against Andrea Ribalta was down 5-2 and two breaks in the second set after taking the first set. But Garcia Valle, as she always does, battled back by winning the next five games for an incredible 6-3, 7-5 victory.

In Goldey-Beacom’s 5-1 victory a season ago over Post in the conference final, Garcia Valle closed the tie with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Brianna Miah.

The Lightning, top seed in the tournament for the second straight year, began things with a 2-1 lead after doubles. Freshmen Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) recorded an 8-2 triumph at first doubles with Garcia Valle and junior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Ecuador) amassing a 8-2 win at third doubles.

After the Wildcats (10-6) won at sixth singles, Lesscher y Post gave GBC a 3-2 lead with her 7-5, 6-2 triumph at first singles over Begona Gomar. Wilmington then squared the match with a fourth-singles win before Zheng notched a 7-5, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles over Laura Gil, making it 4-3.

Lesscher y Post was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player with a 3-0 record, not including a first-set win Friday over two-time CACC Player of the Year Karla Miletic from University of the Sciences in the semifinals. Garcia Valle, Zheng and sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) also were picked to the all-tournament team.

The third-seeded Wildcats only are in their second season.

MIDDLEBURY, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team dropped the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship, 5-3, to in-state rival Goldey-Beacom on Saturday afternoon at the Edgewood Bath & Tennis Club, hosted by Post University.

It was a hard fought contest for the Wildcats (10-6), as they found themselves behind, 2-1, after the doubles event. The Wildcats won the first two singles contest to take a 3-2 advantage, but the Lightning (11-0) fought back by winning the final three singles matches to take the match, 5-3.

The Wildcats were only able to take the No. 2 doubles match on Saturday, as Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe earned the lone Wilmington points, 8-6. Jane Malygina and Tess Paya lost at number three doubles, 8-2, while Laura Gil and Andrea Ribalta fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, before the Wilmington win at number two.

Paya tied the match at 2-2 with a win at number six singles, 6-1 and 6-1, right before Sathe gave the Wildcats a 3-2 lead at number four singles with a 6-3 and 6-3 victory.

But the Lightning bounced back by taking the next three singles matches, wrapping up the CACC Championship, 5-3. Lotte Lesscher y Post defeated Gomar at number one singles, 7-5 and 6-2, to tie the match before Catarina Zheng gave the Lightning the lead with a win at number two singles, 7-5 and 6-1. The CACC Championship Match was the farthest the Wildcats have gone in their two year existence, and will continue their 2017-18 season in the spring. The Wildcats will look to get into the NCAA rankings and continue to compete in the postseason at the end of the spring schedule.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Women’s Soccer Makes it Five in a Row with a 7-1 CACC Victory at Concordia

DATE: October 21, 2017

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - - Five different players scored for the Wilmington University women’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon as the Cats ran away with a Central Athletic Collegiate Conference contest at Concordia College by a score of 7-1.

The Wildcats (11-5-1, 9-2-0 CACC) outshot the Clippers (2-13-0, 2-9-0 CACC), 27-7, for the match, putting 21 of those shots on frame. The win keeps the Wildcats in third place in the CACC with 34 points.

The Wildcats wasted no time as they scored on the games very first shot in the sixth minute. The goal was scored by Jessica Unsihuay, her third of the season, on a cross from Carin Essex-Arline that she headed in. The Wildcats would never look back as they scored again in the 25th minute, this time it was Essex-Arline on the receiving end of a corner kick that tipped off the goalie’s hands, which she deposited into the back of the net for her first of the season.

Just four minutes later, Preslie Quaranta would get in on the action as she would dribble the ball into Clipper territory and take a low shot, which would also find the back of the net for her fourth of the season. As the first period came to an end, the Wildcats were out shooting the Clippers by a score of 10-4, and also hold the edge in corner kicks by a score of 5-0.

The score would remain that way until the 74th minute when the Wildcats’ Loran Wyrough would rip a shot off a pass from Laura Van Steveninck from just past midfield that would beat the keeper low for her team leading 15th goal of the season, which ties her for first place in the CACC with Holy Family’s Brianna Rock. The Wildcats would keep the pressure on as Quaranta would find herself back in the action again in the 75th minute, after taking a pass from Wyrough and dribbling to avoid the keeper and depositing a low shot into the back of the net for her fifth of the season.

The Clippers would get on the board in the 84th minute, as they would cash in on a penalty kick off the foot of Kayla Lanza her first of the season. The Wildcats would put two more shots on the goal in the final two minutes but they would both be saved by the Clippers’ goalkeeper.

The Wildcats will end their regular season at home on Tuesday against Jefferson University. First kick at the WU Athletics Complex is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: CACC South Division Leading Jefferson Sweeps Wilmington Volleyball

DATE: October 25, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division leading Jefferson Rams were too much for the Wilmington University volleyball team, taking the match in straight sets on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-15, 25-16, and 25-22.

The Wildcats (10-7, 6-8 CACC) were right with the Rams (18-6, 13-1 CACC) in the first set, getting off to a good start in front of their home crowd. The set was back and forth with the Rams knotting it at 7-7. Three straight Jefferson errors and an Emma Kongevold kill put the Wildcats on top, 11-7. Mandy Behiels put down a swing to stay ahead 12-9, but the Rams came back with three straight points to tie the set, 12-12. Rebecca Rawlinson and Jill Braunsberg denied a Jefferson swing at the net to regain a 13-12 lead, but the Rams then went on a tear. The visitors scored three straight to take a 15-13 lead before another 8-0 spurt put the Rams up 23-14. Back-to-back kills put the first set away, 25-15.

The beginning of the second set was back and forth again, with the Wildcats scoring 5-of-6 points to take a 7-6 lead. But the Rams answered right back with five straight in part of a 7-1 run to take a 13-8 advantage. Another 5-1 spurt put the visitors ahead 18-11. The Wildcats used kills from Brittany Ford and Eile Harris in part of a 5-2 run to claw to within 20-16, but the Rams responded by scoring the final five points to take a 2-0 lead, 25-16.

With the Wildcats leading 11-9 in the third set, the Rams used a 6-1 run to change momentum and take a 15-12 lead. Behiels started a 5-2 with a kill before a Rawlinson kill and Ram error tied the set, 18-18. Once again the Rams had an answer, however, rattling off four straight to carry a 22-18 lead into a timeout. Genevieve Hughes came out of the break with back-to-back kills before Erin Bistany brought the Wildcats to within 22-21. A Ram service error had the Wildcats within 23-22, but a kill and a Wildcat attack error ended the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.

Behiels led the attack for the Wildcats, collecting nine kills with only one error on 32 swings. The freshman added 10 digs for the double-double as well. Miranda Shaw dished out 14 assists and is now 24 assists shy of 2,000 for her career. Addalyn Flores and Braunsberg led the back row with 12 digs each while Behiels and Ford chipped in with 10 each. Harris led the defense at the net with four block assists.

The Rams’ Courtney Wensel put down 16 kills while hitting .389, adding 13 digs, four aces, and three block assists for a game-high 21.5 points.

The Wildcats head across town for their next contest, playing at Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday, October 31. First serve at the Joseph West Jones Center is set for 7:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom’s Soccer Teams Both Are Back in the CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom’s men’s and women’s soccer teams not only are back in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, but both begin their journey with home quarterfinal games.

The men’s squad (13-4-1, 9-2-1 CACC) is the second seed, its highest since it was the two seed in 2001, and will host seventh-seeded Nyack (7-9-1, 5-7) on Monday at 2:00 pm at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington.

The women’s team (11-4-2, 8-3-1) is the fourth seed and will host fifth seeded Jefferson (9-8, 8-4) on Tuesday at 2:00 pm, also at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field.

The quarterfinal winners advance to championship weekend, which takes place on the campus of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ. The semifinals are Friday, the men’s final is Sunday at 10:00 am and the women’s final is at 12:30 pm.

Tickets for all games are $6 for adults and $3 for children, senior citizens and students with a valid ID. Children under age 3 are admitted free.

Please note Georgian Court University has a NO PETS (except service dogs) and NO SMOKING policy. Everyone’s cooperation is greatly appreciated.

The men’s team this season has seen great offensive play from junior midfielder Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany), who has done it all with his playmaking and scoring ability. A first team all-league pick and CoSIDA Academic All District selection last year, Aghrim this season is first in the country with 13 assists, fifth with 0.72 assists per game and 11th with 31 points. He also is third in school history with 22 career assists, eighth with 15 goals and fifth with 52 points.

The Lightning as a team also have been putting up big numbers. The unit is first in the country with 55 goals, first with 151 points and third with 3.06 goals per game.

Another standout has been junior goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa), who has been a leader in every facet and helps control the Lightning’s play on the field. The first team all-league pick last year is 25th in the country this season with six shutouts and 62nd with 61 saves. He also is first in school history with 11 shutouts and fourth with 192 saves.

The defense also has been exceptional, due largely to the play of seniors Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) and Cameron Wilkinson (Terrigal, Australia). They have paced a unit which has allowed just 19 goals this season, notched eight shutouts and recorded 11 games in which the squad did not permit more than one goal.

GBC earlier this season enjoyed a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) and a four-game shutout streak, both school records. The unit also has eight home victories this year (8-0) that is tied with the 2002 squad for the team best and the nine conference victories is a school record.

The women’s side this season had a welcome addition in freshman forward Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth’s), who has impressed many with her incredible goal-scoring skills. She is 23rd in the country with 12 goals, 31st with 28 points, tied for fourth on the school’s single-season list in goals and fifth overall in points.

Senior midfielder Amy Runciman (Luton, England) also continues to be a dominant presence with her playmaking and determination. The first team all-league and second team all-region pick in 2015 as well as second team All-CACC in 2016, Runciman this year is 79th in the country with eight goals and 87th with 20 points. She also is second in school history with 83 points, fourth with 27 goals and second with 29 assists.

Junior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) has been a major factor at midfield with her solid playmaking as she is 86th in the country with five assists, tied for seventh in school history with 17 goals, tied for ninth with 11 assists and 10th with 45 points. Senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) leads a defense which has notched three shutouts and has not permitted more than one goal 10 times.

The women are hosting a quarterfinal game in back-to-back years for the first time, their eight league wins are tied for the team record and their seven home wins (7-1) are one short of a school record.

This also marks the first time since 2003 in which both the men’s and women’s teams will host its first conference tournament game in the same year. The men that season hosted a first-round contest in a six-team field and the women hosted a semifinal after getting a first-round bye.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - In leading the Wilmington University women’s soccer team to a second place finish, six Wildcats have been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Conference Teams, led by Kierstyn Williams being named the CACC Goalkeeper of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

Williams is the first Wildcat to be named the Goalkeeper of the Year in program history, and is joined on the CACC First Team by redshirt senior Loran Wyrough and redshirt junior Melisa Gall, as well as graduate student Preslie Quaranta, junior Rebecca Dolhansky, and freshman Kiya Wilson on the All-CACC Second Team.

Williams (Middletown, Del.) leads the CACC with six lone shutouts, adding one combined. She is second in the CACC with 10 wins while also second in carrying a .806 save percentage. She is third in the CACC with a 1.31 goals against average, but has only allowed 0.89 goals against versus CACC opponents. Only eight of her 20 goals allowed have come in CACC play. She made a season high 16 saves at Bridgeport while making seven saves in a 1-0 shutout at nationally #6 Adelphi. Williams was a Second Team All-CACC performer a year ago.

Wyrough (Hamilton, N.J.) returns to the CACC First Team for the second year in a row. She finished the regular season with the most goals in the CACC (16) and is second in the CACC with 36 points. All but two of her goals have come in CACC play, as well as 32 points, the best mark in the conference. Four of her 16 goals have been game-winners, all coming against CACC opponents and that is also the best in the CACC. She tied her own program record with four goals in a game twice this season. She scored four goals at Nyack for the second time in her career and against Dominican.

Gall (Marlton, N.J.) is another repeat First Team All-CACC performer, making the list last year as well. She started in 17 games this year, all of which at the centerback position. She scored three goals this year, but better known for her dominant pressure in the backfield. She has started on defense in all seven shutouts this season and has helped led the team to a 1.26 goals against average on the season, the second best in the CACC.

Quaranta (Nottingham, Md.) has made her presence known in her only season with the Wildcats. She is tied for third in the CACC with seven assists, adding five goals to be second on the team with 17 points. She scored a season high two goals at Concordia while adding three points (one goal and one assist) at Bloomfield and against Post. Her on-ball skills are second to none in the CACC, leading to a multitude of opportunities for the Wildcats.

Dolhansky (Blackwood, N.J.) makes a repeat appearance on the All-Conference list. She’s continued to set up the offense from her center midfield position, ranking tied for seventh in the CACC with five assists. She added four goals to finish tied for third on the team with 13 points. She had a season high three points at Nyack, scoring a goal and adding an assist. She had a season high two assists in a 2-0 win over Caldwell.

Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.) has been a force on the back line in her first year as a college player. The freshman was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week on October 16 and has routinely been a dominant figure in every game. She’s started in all 18 games for the Wildcats and has settled on a center back position for the bulk of the season. She has been a part of all seven shutouts this season and has helped led the team to a 1.26 goals against average on the season, the second best in the CACC.

Holy Family’s Brianna Rock was named the CACC Player of the Year for the second year in a row while Goldey-Beacom’s Alanna Speaks was named the CACC Rookie of the Year. Georgian Court’s Morgan LaDuca repeated as the CACC Defensive Player of the Year with Williams rounding out the major player awards as Goalkeeper of the Year.

Georgian Court’s Jim Moore was named the CACC Coach of the Year in leading the Lions to a 12-0 CACC record while Nyack took home the 2017 Team Sportsmanship Award.

The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 12-5-1 overall record, going 10-2 in the CACC to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament. The Wildcats square off against No. 7 Post on Tuesday in the CACC Tournament Quarterfinals. The game is subject to a 2:00 p.m. start at the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday.

SUBJECT: Carin Essex-Arline’s Overtime Rebound Advances No. 2 Wilmington Women’s Soccer Past No. 7 Post, 2-1, in CACC Quarterfinals

DATE: October 31, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Carin Essex-Arline pounded in a rebound in the 97th minute to give the second seeded Wilmington University women’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over seventh seeded Post in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The win propels the Wildcats (13-5-1) to their second straight CACC Tournament Semifinal round, which will be played on Friday afternoon on the campus of Georgian Court University. Third seeded Holy Family defeated sixth seeded Caldwell, 1-0, setting up the Wildcats and Tigers in the semifinals.

The Wildcats gained control early in the contest against the Eagles, scoring the game’s first goal in the sixth minute of action. Krysta Memis took the first shot of the contest, which resulted in the quick 1-0 lead for the home team. Loran Wyrough played a through ball down the middle, allowing Memis to get on the end of the ball in the box. Memis’ shot from the right side of the box went to the far post for her sixth goal of the season just 5:31 into the match.

The Wildcats continued to pressure the Eagles in the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net again despite great looks from Preslie Quaranta in the 23rd minute and Alexa Smalley in the 44th minute.

The second half got off to a fast start as well, but it was Post that responded to tie the match, 1-1. Sabrina Adamo had the ball on the right endline, and passed the ball back to a wide-open Fenna Maarse on the near post. She beat Wilmington goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams to the near post from 10 yards out just 2:59 into the start of the second half.

The Wildcats continued to put the pressure on the Eagles throughout the half, getting a good look off a corner in the 54th minute, but Essex-Arline’s header went wide left.

Loran Wyrough beat the offside’s trap and found herself all alone in on the Post keeper in the 72nd minute, but Cailah Baranowski denied her the breakaway chance. Jessica Unsihuay’s follow up chance dribbled just wide of the right post as well, keeping the score at 1-1.

The final chance for the Wildcats in regulation came in the 82nd minute, as a scramble in the box pushed all the players to the near post. Sticking on the back post, Ashley Cafarella found herself wide open with an empty net in front of her. But her two-touch shot was denied by an Eagle on the goal line, keeping the visitors alive.

Now into the overtime period, Wyrough gave the Wildcats their first chance to win it in the 93rd minute. But her half volley on a ball over the top went wide left.

On their eighth and final corner kick of the game, they made it happen. Smalley played the ball from the right corner, and Jessica Unsihuay played a ball back to Memis outside the box. Memis’ lofted shot clanked off the crossbar and fell in the six-yard box. Essex-Arline was there to stuff home the rebound.

The Wildcats outshot the Eagles, 20-7, for the match, including 7-3 in the second half and 3-0 in the overtime period. Williams made two saves in the game for her 11th win while Baranowski made seven saves in the loss.

The Wildcats and Tigers advance to play in the CACC Tournament Semifinals on Friday afternoon at Georgian Court. They will be the second of two semifinal games, with the second games starting at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom’s women’s soccer team today defeated Jefferson, 2-1, in overtime of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals. BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - - The middle hitters showed up to play for the Wilmington University volleyball team as they led the Wildcats to a sweep of Concordia on the road in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference cross division action on Thursday night.

Set scores for the match were 25-20, 25-23, and 25-20.

Both middles Eile Harris and Rebecca Rawlinson hit above .600 for the match, leading the Wildcats (12-17, 8-8 CACC) to the victory and keeping pace in the CACC South Division. With the win, the Wildcats are now only one game out of the fourth and final playoff spot, trailing Goldey-Beacom and Georgian Court by one full game.

It didn’t take long for a milestone to be reached on Thursday night, as the first point of the match resulted in the Wildcats’ Miranda Shaw’s 2,000th career assist. She is the third Wildcat in program era to reach 2,000 assists, now with 2,016 for her career.

Four of Harris’ and Rawlinson’s kills came in the first set each, as the Wildcats used a 7-2 run in the set to break a 10-10 tie. The Clippers (4-13, 4-12 CACC) closed the gap to within 21-18 before Mandy Behiels put down back-to-back kills for the 23-18 lead. The Clippers answered again with back-to-back points before a service error and a Jill Braunsberg kill gave the Wildcats the game, 25-20.

A 6-0 run in the middle of the second set put the Wildcats up 14-7. The Clippers ran off four straight to get to within 16-13 before the Wildcats scored four of the next six points to regain a 20-15 lead. Concordia wouldn’t go away easily though, as they scored six straight en route to an 8-2 run to take a 23-22 lead. Rawlinson put down a kill before a bad set gave the Wildcats set point. Rawlinson and Braunsberg got their hands on an attack, picking up the block for the 2-0 lead, 25-23.

Concordia jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the third set before the Wildcats rattled off four straight en route to a 6-1 run to take a 10-8 advantage. Still leading 19-17, the Wildcats went on a 3-0 spurt to lead 22-17 before a kill from Shaw gave the Wildcats match points, 24-19. Brittany Ford ended the set and the match, 25-20, with a kill.

Harris led the Wildcats with 12 kills while only committing one error on 18 swings for a .611 attack percentage. Rawlinson finished with eight kills while also only committing one error on 10 swings for a .700 attack percentage. The Wildcats hit .267 as a team for the match.

Shaw finished with 17 assists while Braunsberg added 12 assists. Behiels was the only Wildcat with double figure digs, picking up 11 on the match. Rawlinson added the lone solo block for the Wildcats, adding six block assists as well. Braunsberg added four block assists while Emma Kongevold chipped in with three block assists.

The Wildcats have three CACC matches left to make up the one-game deficit to the Lightning and Lions. Next up for the Wildcats is USciences on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex for Senior Day. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom’s Women’s Soccer Falls, 3-1, at Georgian Court in CACC Semifinals

Goldey-Beacom gave its fans outstanding season that lasted into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals, but the run ended with a 3-1 loss at Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

The Lightning (12-5-2, 8-3-1 CACC) enjoyed an impressive journey that saw the team notch double figures in victories in consecutive years for the first time since 2001-02, go to the CACC Tournament in a fourth straight year and tie the school record with eight conference wins.

Georgian Court (15-3-2) cashed in on its fifth corner kick of the match to grab a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. Megan Murdocco launched one from the right side and Anissia Fucci, set up by the left post, headed it in.

Murdocco in the 54th minute again was the directing the spotlight, using her fourth corner kick of the match to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. She once again sent one from the right side and this time is was Kristen Lister who headed it home for her first goal of the year.

GBC got that goal back just two minutes later for a 2-1 deficit. Junior Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) in the 56th minute was called upon for a long free kick and she once again delivered, sending one home for her eighth goal of the season.

Crammond now is tied for sixth in school history with 18 goals and seventh overall with 48 points.

However, Murdocco in the 66th minute continued to be the woman of the match with yet another successful corner kick. Again she lofted one from the right side and again it was Fucci, heading it home for her 13th tally of the year and a 3-1 margin.

Junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) made four saves for the Lightning.

Fucci ended with four shots and Rosa Franze had three for the Lions, who ended with a 9-4 corner-kicks edge.
