PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University served its way to a sweep of the University of the Sciences on Tuesday night, earning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory, 3-0, at Bobby Morgan Arena.

Set scores for the match were 25-21, 25-27, and 25-15.

The Wildcats (7-12, 3-4 CACC) snapped a two-match losing streak with the win, using 18 aces in the match to keep the Devils (3-7, 2-5 CACC) on their heels.

The Devils battled back early in the first set to eventually take the lead, 10-9. But the Wildcats grabbed the momentum back with four straight points to take a 13-10 lead. The Devils hung around, however, as they again eventually took 16-15 lead. The Wildcats gained control of the set with three straight points, taking a 21-17 lead with a 6-1 spurt. The home team closed to 21-20, but a Brittany Ford ace gave the Wildcats a 23-20 lead. Back-to-back kills by Mandy Behiels ended the game, 25-21.

USciences came out quickly in the second set, grabbing the early lead, 9-5. Trailing 11-9, Eile Harris started a 4-0 swing with a kill, followed by a double block by Rebecca Rawlinson and Emma Kongevold, a Behiels kill, and an Addalyn Flores ace put the Wildcats in front, 13-11. The teams went back and forth until the Wildcats’ final run. Leading 18-17, Harris again started a run with a kill from Miranda Shaw. Harris and Behiels put down back-to-back kills, forcing the Devils into a timeout. The run continued out of the break, however, as Jill Braunsberg came up with two aces before a block by Harris and Kongevold ended the set, 25-17.

The Wildcats were the ones to start quickly in the third set, as a 5-0 run gave the visitors a 9-3 lead. Another 6-0 run gave the Wildcats a 15-6 lead in the third game before a Behiels’ kill started another 5-0 spurt to give the Wildcats a 20-9 advantage. Shaw collected an ace for a 23-12 lead before the Devils scored three-straight points. But 23-15 would be as close as they would get in the set, as Braunsberg put down a kill followed by a Behiels ace ended the match, 25-15.

The Wildcats hit .214 in the second set, putting down 12 kills with only six errors on 28 attacks. They finished the match with a .097 attack percentage, putting down 31 kills with 21 errors on 103 attempts.

Behiels led the Wildcats with 12 kills while adding three aces. Ford and Braunsberg led the team with four aces on the night while Braunsberg and Flores led the back row with 12 digs each. Harris led the defense at the net with four block assists and a solo block, adding three service aces as well. Shaw dished out 14 assists to pace the offense while Braunsberg added 10 assists as well.

SUBJECT: Two Early Goals Too Much to Overcome as Wilmington Women’s Soccer Falls, 2-1, at Georgian Court

DATE: October 4, 2017
djl

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - The Wilmington University women’s soccer team was unable to knock Georgian Court from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference unbeatens, falling, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon

A pair of early goals led the Lions (8-3-2, 7-0 CACC) to a victory, despite the Wildcats (6-5-1, 5-2 CACC) collecting more shots and earning more corners in the match.

It didn’t take long for the Lions to get on the board, as they scored on their first opportunity. Kaitlin Lister finished off a pass deflected off the defense by Lauren Mendez, giving the home team the 1-0 lead just 59 seconds into the match.

Georgian Court made it 2-0 just moments later when Lizzy Krron headed in a cross from Lister for her sixth goal of the year in the ninth minute.

The Wildcats put on the offensive pressure after that, getting the next four shots off in the game. But it wasn’t until the 29th minute that he Wildcats cut the deficit in half. A Lion foul set up a Wildcats’ free kick and Krysta Memis was able to get on the end of a loose ball in the box, finishing off her fourth goal of the year.

Preslie Quaranta hit the crossbar in the 39th minute and Carin Essex-Arline’s follow-up opportunity sailed high as the Wildcats finished off the rest of the first half in outshooting the Lions, 5-0.

The Lions outshot the Wildcats, 7-5, in the second half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Wildcats ended up outshooting the Lions, 15-11, for the match. The final four shots of the match came from the Wildcats, however, but Taylor Mocknis, Rebecca Dolhansky, Memis, or Quaranta weren’t able to solve Natalie Axelsson to tie the game.

Axelsson made five saves for the win while Kierstyn Williams recorded two stops in goal for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats return home for their next match, as they play host to Dominican during the 2017 Wilmington University Homecoming Weekend. The women’s soccer team follows the volleyball match, scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start on the turf.

Joining the team late, Jane Malygina moved to 3-0 at singles competition with a 6-2 and 6-2 victory at number two singles. The Cougars were able to get on the board at number six singles, but it was too little too late as the Wildcats already had the match in hand.

Fri, October 06, 2017
Dover, Del. (Oct. 6, 2017) --- Delaware State scored two first period goals and held on for a 2-1 women’s soccer victory over Hampton at Alumni Stadium this evening. The Hornets notched their first win of the season (1-10-1), while Hampton fell to 2-8.

DSU opened the scoring when Braxton Clark fired a shot off the left post and past Hampton goal keeper Haley Nelson from 15 yards out in the 9th minute (8:35). The goal was Clark’s first of the season and fourth in her career.

About eight minutes later (16:38), Kalyn Fauntleroy gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead on a center shot off a pass from Kori Johnson. Fauntleroy also scored for the first time this season and raised her career total to three.

The Hornets were holding onto the two-goal lead when DSU goal keeper Leslie Fazio was issued a red card and ejected from the contest when her hands made contact with the ball outside the keepers box in the 72nd minute (71:18).

Kori Johnson replaced Fazio in goal for Delaware State. She recorded a save on a shot by Hampton’s Isobel Finnegan in the 84th minute.

The Pirates avoided being shutout when Finnegan beat Johnson on a shot with 52 seconds left to play, but the Hornets were able to run out the clock to preserve the win.

‘I’m so proud of the effort of our team tonight,” said Delaware State second year head coach Kortney Rhoades. “We’ve been making progress, especially on defense, in the last few games and it’s nice to have that effort rewarded with a win. Hampton is also progressing as a team, so this was a hard fought win against a determined opponent.”

Fauntleroy and Johnson, along with McKenzie Miller, DSU’s 2017 seniors, were honored during a pre-game ceremony.

The Hornets return to action on Monday (Oct. 9) against Loyola (Md.) at the new DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica, Del. The match is set for 7 p.m.

UD led 10-8 in the fifth set, and after the Seahawks countered with six consecutive points, Delaware fought off four match points before a Bellinger kill put the Hens up 15-14. SUBJECT: Wyrough Nets Four To Lead Wilmington Women’s Soccer Over Dominican, 6-0, on Homecoming

DATE: October 7, 2017

NEWARK, Del. - - A dominate performance in front of a packed Homecoming crowd allowed the Wilmington University women’s soccer team to keep pace in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings, defeating Dominican, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (7-5-1, 6-2 CACC) outshot the Chargers (2-9, 2-6 CACC), 34-6, for the match, putting 19 of those shots on frame. The win kept the Wildcats in a tie for third place in the CACC with 18 points.

For the fourth time in her career (and second this season), redshirt senior Loran Wyrough scored four goals in a game, tying Wilmington’s single game program record. She now leads the CACC with 13 goals scored and 29 points.

Before Wyrough started scoring, it was Laura van Steveninck who put the Wildcats on the board in the first half. Fresh into the game, van Steveninck had a corner kick punched right to her by the Chargers’ netminder. Her one-time shot from atop the box gave the Wildcats the 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.

Wyrough scored her first of the game just before the halftime break, crashing the net as Alexis Johnson lofted a high long shot to the far post. The Chargers’ goalie was able to get a hand on the ball, by Wyrough was right there to knock it in at the 40:08 mark for her 10th of the season.

After the halftime break, the Wildcats tacked on four more goals, starting with a La’Dae Boykin blast form 15 yards out in the 56th minute. Ashley Cafarella quickly threw a ball into Jessica Unsihuay whose cross found Boykin in the middle of the box.

Wyrough started her scoring stretch in the 70th minute, racing to a long ball over the top by Rebecca Dolhansky. Wyrough was able to touch the ball around a drawn out goalkeeper and slotted it home for the 4-0 lead.

She quickly made it 5-0 in the 73rd minute, as she finished off her own penalty kick, getting fouled in the box by the goalkeeper. It was her first PK of the year and 12th goal of the season.

Wyrough finished off the scoring in the 79th minute, getting to the second chance ball in the box. Van Steveninck put a long ball form in front of her bench into the box, which was headed back into the middle of the field by the defense. Wyrough kept with the play and was able to slot the keeper for her fourth goal of the game, 6-0.

Kierstyn Williams made two stops in the first half before Kate Tubo closed the door on the shutout by making one stop in the second half.

The Wildcats head to Chestnut Hill on Tuesday for their next CACC contest. The game in Philadelphia is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. opening whistle.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team secured a third place finish and No. 3 seed in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 7-2 victory at Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at the Abraham J. Salaman tennis Courts.

The win is the sixth consecutive for the Wildcats (8-5, 6-2 CACC), not having lost since Sunday, October 1 against Concordia. The team wrapped up the third seed for the CACC Tournament and will host sixth seeded Post on Tuesday at Delcastle Tennis Center for a first round matchup.

The number two and three doubles helped set up the victory for the Wildcats, as they came out with a 2-1 lead before the singles matches. Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe won, 8-1, at number two while Jane Malygina and Tess Paya won 8-2 at number three doubles.

The Wildcats nearly won all six singles matches for what would have been the fourth straight match, winning five of the six.

SUBJECT: Strong Hitting and Serving Power Wilmington Volleyball to Sweep of Dominican

NEWARK, Del. - - High percentage hitting and aggressive serving led the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-12, 25-15, and 25-8.

Wilmington (10-13, 6-5 CACC) wasted no time, and jumped to a quick 8-3 lead out of the gate. Three kills from Brittany Ford midway through the first set helped the hosts run off five straight to take a 19-7 advantage. The Chargers (0-20, 0-11 CACC) fought off two set points before a service error gave the Wildcats the first set, 25-12.

It was all the home team early in the second set as well as they ran off the first 10 points of the set, all off the serving of Miranda Shaw. Dominican couldn’t cut the deficit to closer than eight points (11-3), as Wilmington pulled away for the 25-15 victory.

Multiple runs of four points or more allowed the Wildcats to easily secure the sweep, as they cruised to the 25-8 victory in the third and final set. Three aces from Genevieve Hughes were a spark midway through the set, and Wilmington hit an astounding .591 to make short work of the Chargers.

For the match, Wilmington hit .346 while holding Dominican to just a .013 hitting percentage. The Wildcats totaled a whopping 15 service aces, and committed just two receiving errors on the afternoon.

Leading the way for the hosts was freshman Mandy Behiels, who recorded 10 kills, hitting a .350 clip. Sophomore Jill Braunsberg added eight kills, 13 assists, 11 digs, and three aces, while freshman Jahnya Boschulte hit .364 and notched five kills of her own. Junior Miranda Shaw added 19 assists, six aces, three kills, and eight digs in a solid all-around performance while sophomore Addalyn Flores paced the defense with 16 digs.

Wilmington returns to the court on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to take on Georgian Court University in a pivotal CACC Southern Division matchup. First serve is set for 7 pm in Lakewood.

Blue Hens Drop Dual Meet Heartbreaker to George Mason

NEWARK, Del. -- It all came down to the final race, as the University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving program trailed George Mason by 11 points heading into the 400 freestyle relay Saturday afternoon at Rawstrom Natatorium.

The Blue Hens (0-2) got a clutch performance for the ‘A’ 400 free relay team of Melissa Manuelli, Ellie Jogani, Sarah Braatz and Athena Cimino, as the quartet (3:33.93) defeated the Patriots (3:37.32) (1-0) ‘A’ relay team by almost four seconds. The results gave the Hens a critical 11 points. Delaware’s ‘B’ relay team finished just over a quarter of a second behind the GMU top squad. The result swung the meet in favor of the visitors, as George Mason defeated Delaware 151-149.

Cimino, a junior transfer from Georgia Southern University, continued her strong start to the season as the Florida native finished first in the 50 free (24.70) and 100 free (53.6). Cimino also served as the anchor leg of the victorious 400 free relay team and the 200 medley relay squad that finished second.

Junior Amy Nemeth also swam well for the Blue Hens as she won 200 yard free (1:56.76). Other highlights included junior Samantha Marino winning the 200 backstroke and the Blue Hens finishing first second and third in the 200 free.

Delaware returns to action next Saturday, hosting Washington College for a 1 p.m. meet.

Head Coach John Hayman:

“Today was an outstanding performance by our young team. We dominated some events but lacked some depth in others. I am extremely proud of the way the women’s team fought through a very close meet until the end. It is always fun to watch a meet that comes down to the last event to determine the winner. We needed to finish with the top two times in the 400 free, but we fell short and finished first and third despite a season-best performance.”

Lukens Wins First Career Diving Title, Savidge and Ciecko Shine in loss to George Mason

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s swimming and diving program dropped a 196-104 decision to George Mason Saturday afternoon at Rawstrom Natatorium.

Delaware (0-2) received great performances both in the pool and on the diving board, as freshman Jacob Lukens won the 1M title (258.15) and finished second on the 3M board (260.33). Senior Patrick Savidge again swam well for the Hens, as the South Windsor, Connecticut native won the 200 IM (1:51.68) by nearly seven seconds, the 200 breaststroke (2:04.73) and finished second in the 100 breaststroke (58.11) and the 200 medley relay (1:34.61). Freshman Bryce Ciecko won the 500 yard free (4:42.61) and finished second in the 1000 free (9:41.57), while sophomore Asher Kiely finished first in the 100 backstroke (52.13) and second in the 200 back (1:53.16).

Head Coach John Hayman:

“Today was an outstanding performance by our young team. We dominated some events but lacked some depth in others. The men were highlighted once again by Pat Savidge with big wins in the 200 Breastroke and 200 IM. His IM time of 1:51 being a personal best.”

oldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Goes for Two Straight as It Competes in the CACC Tournament

Winning for the first time last season was great. Now, Goldey-Beacom sets its sights on a second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship as the league’s tournament is conducted this week.

The Lightning (9-0, 8-0 CACC) a second straight year are the top seed for the conference tournament and are in the semifinals a 10th consecutive year. GBC awaits the winner of Tuesday’s first-round match between fourth-seeded University of the Sciences and fifth-seeded Jefferson.

That semifinal takes place Friday at 10:00 am in Middlebury, CT. The second semifinal is between second-seeded Concordia (NY) and the survivor of Tuesday’s first-round tie between third-seeded Wilmington (DE) and sixth-seeded Post.

GBC also enters the tournament off a second straight undefeated fall regular season and has won 17 straight regular-season league matches, including the final two of the 2015 campaign.

A key component of this season has been freshman Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal), who has made a huge impact on what remains a very young squad. She owns an 11-1 singles mark that includes 8-0 in dual matches and has teamed with freshman Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) to garner a 10-2 doubles mark.

Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain), a first team all-league pick last season, is back on form this season with a 12-2 mark, including an 8-1 ledger in dual matches. She and freshman Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) are 14-1 in doubles this season, with the victories already putting them tied for fourth for most in one season, and played in the ITA East Region final. The record of 15 wins is shared by three players.

Regner also has been a vital contributor with a 9-2 singles mark, including 8-1 in dual matches and 6-1 at fourth singles.

Sophomore Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) continues to be one of the most feared players in the league with a 7-1 singles mark and 6-0 in dual matches. She and junior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Ecuador) are 7-1 in doubles.

Sophomore Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) also is a key member with a 5-3 singles mark and 5-2 against the league. She and senior Raquel Morais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) have combined to notch a 5-1 singles record, including 5-0 at third singles and 4-0 vs. the CACC.

Goldey-Beacom last season upended Post, 5-1, for its first CACC title in school history. In its fifth trip to the final, the Lightning clinched their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
