NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team remains in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoff picture with a 3-1 victory over USciences on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-17, 21-25, 25-12, and 25-21.

Following a pregame ceremony to honor the 2017 Senior Class, the Wildcats (13-17, 9-8 CACC) took it to the Devils (6-15, 4-13 CACC) to remain in the hunt for the CACC Tournament. With the win, coupled with Georgian Court falling to Jefferson, the Wildcats and Lions are now tied for fourth place in the South Division with two matches remaining. The Lions hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Wildcats, however.

The middles again led the Wildcats as senior Eile Harris put down 12 kills on 20 attempts, finishing with a .500 hitting percentage. She also led the defense with six block assists while adding one solo block. Rebecca Rawlinson put down seven kills while adding two solo blocks and two block assists. The Wildcats out-blocked the Devils, 11-5.

After the Devils came back and tied the match, 1-1, the Wildcats grabbed momentum with a brilliant third set. They scored the first four points of the set before another 4-0 run gave the home team a 9-3 advantage. They continued to score two points for every one for the Devils, getting a Rawlinson service ace to double up the Devils, 20-10. Following a Devils’ kill, Brittany Ford sparked a 3-0 run to end the third game, serving up an ace before Harris put down a kill for the 2-1 lead, 25-12.

The Devils didn’t go away easily, however, as they came out in the fourth set and took a 6-3 lead. Trailing 9-7, the Wildcats started their comeback by rattling off six straight en route to a 8-2 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Devils climbed back to within a single point on multiple occasions, but the Wildcats were always able to keep the slight edge. Leading 22-21, Rawlinson put down a kill to start a 3-0 run to end the match. Miranda Shaw came up with an ace for match point before a bad set by the Devils ended the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.

Mandy Behiels added eight kills while the Wildcats hit .141 for the match. Their 11 blocks and 64 digs aided in allowing the Devils to only hit .023 for the match. Addalyn Flores led the defense with 23 digs while Jill Braunberg was the only other Wildcat to reach double figures with 11. Braunsberg finished with the only double-double for the Wildcats with 16 assists. Shaw added 18 assists to go along with four aces.

The Wildcats have two matches remaining, both against CACC South Division opponents. Their final home game of the regular season will be on Wednesday when they host Holy Family at the Complex. The Tigers are currently in second place in the South Division. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Volleyball Falls to Holy Family, 3-0, Despite Holding Set Point in First Two Sets

DATE: November 8, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The final points were hard to find for the Wilmington University volleyball team as they dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division matchup to Holy Family, 3-0, on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 28-26, 27-25, and 25-16.

The Wildcats (13-18, 9-9 CACC) had set points in the first two games, but failed to find the final points. On the flip side, the Tigers (20-9, 15-4 CACC) were able to rally and put down the final points in the first two sets before carrying the momentum into the third frame.

The Wildcats rallied from down 17-15 with a 6-1 spurt, finished with a double block by Rebecca Rawlinson and Mandy Behiels for the 21-18 lead. The Tigers fought back with a 4-1 run of their own, regaining a 22-21 lead. Down 23-22, Rawlinson put down back-to-back kills to gain set point, 24-23. But the Tigers had the answer again, scoring back-to-back points to swing the momentum back to the visitors. Erin Bistany and Rawlinson staved off set point, however, before a Tiger error gave the Wildcats another set points, 26-25. Holy Family answered with kills from Chase Wassel and Jaime Bonner, before picking up an ace out of a timeout to take the first set, 28-26.

Needing to fight back, the Wildcats jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the second set. But the Tigers clawed back with four straight points, closing the gap to 15-14. Tied at 19-19, a Tiger service error started a 3-0 run, ending in a 23-20 Wildcat lead with a kill from Rawlinson. A Bistany and Rawlinson double block gave the Wildcats three set points, 24-21, but the Tigers climbed all the way back with four straight points to take a 25-24 lead. After Brittany Ford tied the set at 25-25, the Tigers used back-to-back kills to take a 2-0 lead in the match, 27-25.

The Tigers carried that momentum into the third set, jumping out to an 11-7 lead. Now down 14-11, the Wildcats couldn’t stop the Tigers as they went on a 4-0 run to take an 18-11 lead. Back-to-back Tiger errors kept the Wildcats alive before a Ford and Rawlinson double block brought the Wildcats back to within 18-15. But the Tigers rallied once again, taking the next four points to keep the Wildcats at an arms’ length, 22-15. Rawlinson put down her final kill of the night, 22-16, but the Tigers scored the final three points of the night to close out the match, 25-16.

Rawlinson led the Wildcats with nine kills while adding a match high nine block assists. The sophomore middle only made one error on 17 attempts, hitting .471 for the match. Behiels finished with six kills and eight digs. Addalyn Flores led the back row with 14 digs while Miranda Shaw collected a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs. Bistany added four block assists for the Wildcats.

With the loss, coupled by wins from Georgian Court and Goldey-Beacom, the Wildcats are mathematically eliminated from CACC Tournament consideration. Both Goldey-Beacom and Georgian Court hold tiebreakers against the Wildcats, even if they finished tied in the standings.

The Wildcats have one match remaining in the 2017 season, as they head to Chestnut Hill on Saturday for the season finale. The first serve in Philadelphia is set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday night.

Breanne Haley Sets Kills Record in Goldey-Beacom Volleyball’s 3-1 Victory Over University of the Sciences

Freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD) broke the College’s single-season kills record and Goldey-Beacom improved its chances of making the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 3-1 victory (25-16, 18-25, 25-20, 25-12) over University of the Sciences at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Haley pounded 19 kills to give her 441 on the season, breaking the mark of 440 set by Kadi McCoy in 2014. The kills from the five-time CACC Rookie of the Week are just 42 off the school’s career top 10 list.

This went a long way in GBC getting a 40-34 kills edge with a .223 hitting percentage. The Lightning had 13 kills in the first set with 11 in each of the last two.

Senior Jax Babezki (Warrington, PA) notched 12 kills, eight digs and a .400 percentage for the Lightning. Freshman Sydney Fulton (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) had 27 assists, Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) notched 14 and fellow junior Megann Santiago (Levittown, NY) added 16 digs.

GBC (12-17, 10-8 CACC) clinches a winning conference record for the first time since 2006 and is tied for third place in the CACC South Division with Georgian Court (10-8). Wilmington (9-9) is one match behind.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday looking to secure a berth in the conference tournament as it faces Caldwell. Match time is noon.

Goldey-Beacom Breanne Haley Tabbed CACC Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-League; Jax Babezki Picked Third Team

Goldey-Beacom’s Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD) was picked Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Volleyball Rookie of the Year as well as second team all-league with senior Jax Babezki (Warrington, PA) tabbed third team all-conference.

Haley walked onto the Pike Creek campus with unlimited potential and more than fulfilled it in being named the league’s Rookie of the Week six times, the league’s Player of the Week once and the CACC Weekly Honor Roll twice. She also is the second straight Lightning to get this award as Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ) was so honored last year.

Haley has been dominant on the court with her incredible net play and it shows in the national stats, not to mention she has 20 double-doubles this year. She is 11th in the country with 461 kills, 15th with 4.81 points per set and 16th with 4.27 kills per set.

Making the school’s record books, Haley’s 461 kills already is the College’s single-season record and is just outside the school’s career top 10 list. Her 360 digs are tied for 10th on the school’s single-season list.

Babezki made a big splash in her second and final season with the Lightning. Her top matches this year were the two against Wilmington (DE), of which she combined for 31 kills and a .424 hitting percentage.

Babezki also is 11th in the CACC with a .250 hitting percentage, 12th with 251 kills, 15th with 2.32 kills per set, 19th with 11 block solos. She notched double figures in kills 11 times this season.

Goldey-Beacom (12-18, 10-9 CACC) clinched its first winning league record and first conference tournament berth both since 2006. The squad will be in action Tuesday in the quarterfinals at 7:00 pm at Caldwell, champions of the North Division and a finalist in last year’s tournament.

Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Falls at Caldwell, 3-0, in CACC Tournament Quarterfinals

After Goldey-Beacom dropped a tough five-set match Saturday at Caldwell, tonight’s rematch in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals unfortunately produced the same result with a 3-0 loss (17-25, 16-25, 16-25) in Caldwell, NJ.

GBC played tough Saturday in a 3-2 loss at Caldwell and was ready for the second take. Senior Jax Babezki (Warrington, PA), named third team All-CACC, gave the Lightning a boost in the opening set with six kills and a .556 hitting percentage. Caldwell was limited to just a .198 percentage, but GBC only could get .028.

Caldwell in the second set turned to conference Player of the Year Katrina Janssen, who pounded five kills to give her squad a two-set lead. Janssen then had four kills in the third set as part of the Cougars’ 10 in that span to close the match.

Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD), named CACC Rookie of the Year, had 11 kills and 11 digs for her team-best 21st double-double of the season for the Lightning. Freshman Sydney Fulton (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) had 13 assists and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, Babezki pounded eight kills, Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) notched 10 assists and fellow junior Megann Santiago (Levittown, NY) added 11 digs for GBC.

Janssen ended with 13 kills, Gabrielle Bennett notched 16 assists, Alyssa Ayala recorded 11, Jessica Mitchell amassed 15 digs and Taryn Auyong added 11 for the Cougars (23-7).

Goldey-Beacom (12-19, 10-9 CACC) was playing in the CACC Tournament for the first time since 2006, the same year it last had a winning league record prior to this season.

SUBJECT: Blue Hen Sophomore Maria Bellinger Named To All-CAA Volleyball Third Team
DATE: November 15, 2017

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore outside hitter Maria Bellinger was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Third Team as the league announced its all-conference selections Wednesday.

Bellinger (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) started all 26 matches for Delaware this season, and was the only Blue Hen to appear in all 96 sets. She led the team with 360 kills (3.75 per set) and 18 service aces, was second on the squad with 233 digs, and tied for fourth with 36 blocks.

Bellinger’s 3.75 kills average was good for third in the conference, while she ranked fourth by averaging 4.16 points per set.

Bellinger recorded seven of the eight highest kill matches by a Blue Hen this season including a career-high 28 at George Washington and UNCW, which tied for the sixth most in UD history. She posted 25 kills and a career-best 20 digs in the Blue Hens’ victory over UMBC, and following her match vs. the Colonials became just the second player in program history to record at least 25 kills in consecutive matches.

Bellinger also slammed 25 kills at William & Mary and 23 two nights later at Elon, surpassing the 20-kills mark five times on the year. She notched double figure kills in 17 contests, and recorded a team-leading six double-doubles during the campaign.

NEWARK, Del. - - Wilmington University women’s soccer standout Loran Wyrough has earned another accolade as she has been named to the Division II United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Women’s Soccer Team, as voted on by the region’s coaches.

Wyrough (Hamilton, N.J.), a redshirt senior, was voted on to the USC All-East Region Third Team as released by their office Tuesday night. This is Loran’s second award, as she was already named to the D2CCA All-East Region First team that was released earlier this month.

The forward led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with 17 goals, finishing second in the league with 39 points. She scored four goals in one game twice this season, doing so at Nyack and against Dominican in CACC play. Her five game-winning goals also led the CACC, with four of them coming against CACC opponents.

The forward finished her Wildcat career second in program history with 53 goals and only the second player in program history with at least 100 career points, finishing with 121 overall. Her 39 points this year are fourth best in program history. She was named Second Team D2CCA All-East Region and First Team All-CACC as a sophomore, Second Team All-CACC as a junior, and First Team All-CACC again as a senior.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Cross Country, Track & Field Signs Two to National Letter of Intent
DATE: December 13, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
– University of Delaware women’s cross country and track & field head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith has announced the signing of two high school standouts to a NCAA National Letter of Intent to attend UD and compete for Blue Hens beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.
The duo includes standout distance runner Tina Capparell (below left) from Tamaqua, Pa. (Marian Catholic High School) and record-setting sprint specialist Alyssa Armor (below right) from New Castle, Del. (William Penn High School).
“We are excited to have Tina and Alyssa join our Blue Hen family next fall,” said McFarlane-Smith. “Both these ladies have the scholastic abilities we are looking for as we build on our depth to defend another conference title. They each have the potential to be high scorers at the championship level.”
Capparell has enjoyed a standout career at Marian Catholic where she won the PIAA Pennsylvania cross country state individual title this past November. That performance followed an outstanding junior season in which she placed sixth in the 1,600 meters at the 2017 state outdoor track & field championship.
She is a four-time state cross country medalist, including a fifth place showing in 2016, a four-time District 11 champion, and a two-time Schuylkill League champion. In track & field, she won the 2016 district and league title in the 1,600 meters and won the 2017 league and district and league 4 x 400 meter championship.
Her top times include 2:21.68 in the outdoor 800 meters, 5:05.94 in the outdoor 1,600 meters, 5:25.24 in the indoor mile, and 12:14.09 in the outdoor 3,200 meters.
She has been an honor roll student every quarter of high school and is a National Honor Society member.
Armor is one of the top sprinters in the state of Delaware and is coming off a state outdoor championship finish this past spring when she captured the 400 meters with a time of 56.97 and while also placing fourth in the 200 meters for William Penn.
The state record-holder in the 600 meters (1:37.13), she is a three-time All-Blue Hen Conference selection, a three-time All-New Castle County selection, was a Meet of Champions finalist, and competed at the New Balance national meet.
An outstanding student, she is a National Honor Society member, ranks No. 3 in her class, is a three-year recipient of the Presidential Award, an academic all-conference selection, and serves as senior class treasurer.

BLUE HENS ANNOUNCE THREE ADDITIONS TO 2018 CLASS

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer program, and UD head coach Mike Barroqueiro announced the additions of Arna Dís Arnþórsdóttir, Sophie Clarke and Antonie Stárová, Wednesday afternoon. Arnþórsdóttir, Clarke and Stárová bring Barroqueiro’s first full recruiting class to 12 members, joining the first nine members of the class who were announced back in February.

“I could not be more excited to welcome Arna, Sophie and Toni to our Blue Hens family,” Barroqueiro exclaimed. “The addition of these three players, to an already stellar incoming class, is yet another important step in the right direction for our program.”

One of the newest members of Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar in the Icelandic Premier League, Arnþórsdóttir spent the previous four seasons with fellow Premier League side, Breiðablik. During her time with Breiðablik, the Reykjavik native helped lead her team to a league championship in 2015 and three-second place finishes in 2014, 2016 & 2017. In addition to her success domestically, Arnþórsdóttir made five UEFA Champions League appearances with Breiðablik including advancing to the “Last 32” in 2016 where they faced off against European powerhouse, Rosengard of Sweden. A key player in the back line for Breiðablik, the defender helped hold five-time World Player of the Year Marta Da Silva scoreless in their two match-ups against Rosengard. Arnþórsdóttir parlayed her club success into extensive international experience, collecting 24 appearances for the Icelandic National team, including 12 appearances for the U-19 team where she scored four times.

“Arna is someone who we targeted early and we are thrilled that she has decided to continue her journey here at the University of Delaware. She is another experienced international player with extensive Champions League and National Team experience. She brings a very mature quality to how she competes and will definitely help us as we continue moving toward building a championship-caliber program,” Barroqueiro said.

The 11th addition to the Blue Hens 2018 Signing Day class, Clarke joins Delaware after a successful three-year career for Denver South high school. The Denver native is a three-time CHSAA Honorable Mention selection and will serve as a captain for Denver South for the second consecutive season.

“Sophie came to us as a late addition and we are so glad she’s chosen to move across the country and join us at UD! Sophie comes to us from some of the top club environments in the country with Colorado Storm and Colorado Rush. Sophie is incredibly technical with a very strong understanding of the game. Her vision is perfectly complemented by her work-rate and that will allow her to have a wonderful career here at UD. Sophie’s most impressive characteristic, however, is her character. She is a driven, high-character kid who understands what it takes to be successful. I can’t wait for her to get here in August.”

Delaware’s final addition to the 2018 class joins the Hens from Prague, Czech Republic where she played for one of the most storied clubs in Europe, the 18-time Czech first division champions, AC Sparta (Prague). Over her three seasons with AC Sparta, Starova helped lead her club to FAČR Cup Championships in 2015 & 2017 as well as three-consecutive appearances in the UEFA Champions League. In addition to her club duties, Stárová has excelled internationally, starring with the Czech U-17 & U-19 national teams. Most recently, she earned 10 caps with the Full Czech National Team including three appearances earlier this month in the 2018 Cyprus Cup.

“Toni is someone with true game-changing qualities that will help bolster our attack for next year. Having represented her country at every level, including with her full national team and playing a meaningful role for her club in one of the world’s most premier leagues, the UEFA Champions League, there is no doubt that she has the experience to come in and contribute at a high level.”

The Blue Hens have already begun their 2018 spring camp, which will be highlighted by scrimmages against Maryland, Seton Hall and Villanova.
