Tribe Football Concludes Spring Drills

Following the contest, four seniors were named captains for the 2005 season and the John A. Stewart Memorial Winter Warrior Award was handed out by Speed, Strength and Conditioning Coach John Sauer. The captains are senior center Patrick Mulloy (West Chester, PA), senior wide receiver Josh Lustig (Erie, PA), senior linebacker Travis McLaurin (Wilmington, DE) and senior defensive end Adam O’Connor (Greensboro, NC).

Offensively, the game served as an audition for the Tribe’s two young quarterbacks, sophomore Michael Potts (Middletown, DE) and redshirt freshman Jacob Phillips (Warm Springs, VA)

Tribe Football Concludes Spring Drills

If you were the AD at the U of D, what changes would you make?

Some programs need to be shakened up:
1 The men's Varsity Basketball coach needs to be let go. He signs the wrong players for scholarships, has little interest in in-state players, and constantly whines about injuries and the need to get more athletic in the conference. Attendance and wins are dropping every year and their style of play is boring- turnovers, lack of defense, etc.

2. Another program that needs to be retooled is the men's soccer team that wins maybe one conference game a year and doesn' draw any in-state interest.

6 UD recruits to play in Blue-Gold Allstar game:

If you UD fans want to see 1/4 of UD's '05 recruiting class in action, plan on attending the annual Blue-Gold Allstar game in June. I don't remember any game in the past that had this many UD recruits playing in the game. The following UD recruits were selected to play; Matt Hasseltine, Brent Gaines, Blair Newman, Greg Cox, Zach LaPenta & Mike Purzyki.

Delaware Softball Splits Doubleheader At Maryland

University of Delaware sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat
(Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) threw an eight-hit shutout as the Blue
Hen softball team blanked the University of Maryland, 2-0, in the opener
before the Terrapins responded to win the second game, 11-1 in five innings, as the teams split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Terrapin Softball Complex.

The first game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh, when
freshman second baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) led off with a walk and scored when freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) followed with a double to rightfield. Elyse Lucas then came in to relieve Terrapin starter Jessica Aditays, and after she struck out freshman catcher Natalie Savona (Stamford, CT/Stamford), Traynor moved to third on a passed ball. Freshman designated player Jessica Ralston (Boonton Township,
NJ/Montville Township) then struck out, but senior leftfielder Lauren
Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) followed with a single to shortstop to score Traynor with the second run of the game.

Sloat allowed a pair of two-out singles to Nneka Cardoza and Crystal
Tweedy in the bottom of the seventh, but got Jenny Belak to fly out to right to end the game and post her eighth shutout of the season, tied for second on the Delaware single-season list. Sloat, who improved to 16-11 this season, scattered eight hits and walked two while recording two strikeouts in the victory. Aditays took the loss and fell to 8-4 on the year after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out six in six-plus innings of work.

The Blue Hens, who are now 27-23 this season, took the lead during the
top of the first in the second game when senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) worked a one-out walk, stole second when Borchers struck out, and scored on a single to center by Traynor. However, Maryland, which is now 24-19, came right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame off Delaware junior starter Lindsay Jones (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee).

Cardoza led off by singling into left, and one out later Lindsay Klein
walked to put runners on first and second. After the runners moved up on a groundout, Crystal Rizzuto ripped a two-run double to leftcenter and came around to score when Abbey Welch followed with a single to center. Natalie Grossman led off the bottom of the second with a bunt single, and after Tweedy singled, both runners scored when Cardoza doubled down the left field line to make it a 5-1 game. One out later Klein tripled to right to plate Cardoza, and Klein then beat Traynor’s throw home when Keri Lounge hit a groundball to first to put Maryland up six runs.

Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Knapp (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) entered in
the bottom of the third inning and retired the first Terrapin batter before issuing a one-out walk to Grossman. After Grossman stole second Knapp got the second out of the inning, but Grossman scored when Cardoza reached on an error by Borchers. After Belak was hit by a pitch, Klein drilled a three-run home run to center as Maryland took an 11-1 lead.

Jones fell to 1-2 after allowing seven runs on seven hits while walking
one in the first two innings, while Knapp gave up four runs, one earned, on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings as Delaware allowed the most runs in a game since an 11-0 loss to Hofstra on April 12, 2003. Maryland pitcher Crystal Crews improved to 5-7 as she allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven.

Delaware concludes its regular season this weekend with a three-game
series at James Madison. The Blue Hens and Dukes will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday, with action on both days beginning at 2 p.m. Delaware needs to win at least two games in the series to advance to next week’s four-team Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.

Delaware’s Jordan Hall Named Colonial Athletic Association POW

RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware sophomore midfielder Jordan
Hall, who scored a career-high five goals in Delaware’s 13-6 win over
St. John’s Saturday night, has been named the Colonial Athletic
Association Player of the Week for the period ending May 1.

Hall, a native of Surrey, British Columbia (Fleetwood Park High
School), earned the award for the second time this season and became the third Blue Hen player honored by the CAA this season. Chris Collins was named CAA Player of the Week earlier this season while Vincent Giordano has been a three-time winner of the CAA Rookie of the Week.

CAA regular season champion Delaware (10-4) will be the No. 1 seed and
take on No. 4 seed in the CAA semifinals Wednesday night, May 4, at 7
p.m. at Rullo Stadium. Should the Hens win, they would host Towson or
Villanova in the CAA title game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Rullo. The CAA
champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Hall led Delaware to the win in their season finale against St. John’s,
helping then No. 19 Delaware to its third straight win and its sixth
victory in the last seven games. For his effort, Hall was named the
Milt Roberts Day Game Most Valuable Player. He scored three goals in the
first half, including two in the second period when the Hens outscored
St. John’s 7-3 to take a four-goal lead into halftime.

He later gave the Hens their biggest lead with his fifth goal with
13:21 remaining. He scored on seven shots and also added two groundballs and a caused turnover.

Hall entered the week as the CAA’s leading scorer with 2.85 points per
game and raised his team-leading point total to 42 points on 26 goals
and 16 assists.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Shuts Down Philadelphia U

WILMINGTON, DE Freshman Kendra Russell (New Castle, DE) picked up
her 13th and 14th wins of the season as the Goldey-Beacom College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Philadelphia University Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 3-0 and game two 2-1 at the GBC Softball Complex.

The Lightning extended their winning streak to four games and improved
their overall record to 21-15 while Philadelphia University dropped to 13-25.

Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when freshman
Megan Harper (Atco, NJ) plated senior Devon O’Brien (Wilmington, DE) on an RBI groundout to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by senior Holly Kimble (Millsboro, DE) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kelly Halfen (Newark, DE) pushed the lead to 3-0 and gave GBC the win.

In the nightcap, the Lightning rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom
of the sixth, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish. Halfen led off the inning with a triple and scored on a throwing error to tie the game at one before Russell doubled home sophomore Sarah Gehman (King of Prussia, PA) for the go-ahead run.

Russell tossed three innings of scoreless relief in game one, allowing
just one hit while striking out one Ram batter. She allowed just one hit in 2.2 IP in game two, walking two while striking out one.

The Lightning return to action this Saturday when they travel to New
York to take on CACC rival Nyack College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
