Delaware Football Standout Seniors Sign NFL Contracts

NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware football standout seniors
Sidney Haugabrook, Mondoe Davis, and Chris Mooney have all signed free agent contracts with the National Football League after not being selected in this past weekend’s annual draft.

Haugabrook, a cornerback from Atlanta, GA (Woodward Academy), signed
with the Tennessee Titans, Davis, a linebacker from Newport News, VA
(Woodside HS), signed with the New York Jets, and Mooney, a defensive
lineman from Huntington, NY (Huntington HS), signed with the New York
Giants.

The three helped lead Delaware to the 2003 NCAA I-AA national title, a
trip to the I-AA quarterfinals in 2004, and back-to-back Atlantic 10
Conference titles the last two seasons under head coach K.C. Keeler.

The three players bring to nine the number of former Blue Hen football
players currently in the NFL, joining quarterback Rich Gannon of the
Oakland Raiders, defensive back Mike Adams of the San Francisco 49ers,
quarterback Andy Hall of the Philadelphia Eagles, defensive lineman
Shawn Johnson of the Tennessee Titans, and running back Keith Burnell
and offensive lineman Jason Nerys of the New York Jets. Hall, Johnson,
Burnell, and Nerys were members of their team’s practice squads last
season and did not appear on the regular season roster.

Haugabrook, a 5-10, 185 lb. cornerback and kick returner, was a
consensus All-American as a senior in 2004, earning first team Walter
Camp, first team American Football Coaches Association, and second team
Associated Press honors on defense and second team The Sports Network
honors as a kick returner. A team co-captain in 2004, he became just
the second player in school history and to earn all-conference honors
all four years and also participated in the prestigious East-West
Shrine Game this past January. A starter in all 51 career games, Haugabrook established 13 school records, including career games played (51), career tackles by a cornerback, career punt return yards, and career kickoff return yards. He also recorded 12 career interceptions and
scored six touchdowns on returns. As a senior in 2004, Haugabrook
registered 67 tackles, intercepted two passes, broke up seven pass, and
averaged 11.4 yards on punt returns (18th in NCAA I-AA) and 27.0 yards
on kickoff returns (10th in NCAA I-AA). He will earn his degree in
consumer economics this May.

Davis, a 6-1, 225 lb. linebacker, was a four-year starter for the Blue
Hens and led the team in tackles each of the past two seasons, earning
first team All-Atlantic 10 and first team All-East honors this past
fall when he registered 123 tackles. He played in 49 career games and
collected 342 tackles, ranking sixth all-time at Delaware, and also had
26 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and a school record eight forced
fumbles. A three-time member of the Atlantic 10 Academic Honor Roll,
Davis earned his degree in four years and is currently enrolled in
public policy graduate school at Delaware.

Mooney, a 6-5, 270 lb. defensive lineman, enjoyed an outstanding career
for the Blue Hens on defense, earning All-Atlantic 10 honors each of
his final three seasons and being named third team All-American by The
Sports Network and first team All-East this past season. He played in
all 51 games during his career and posted 125 tackles, 32.5 tackles for
loss (No. 10 all-time at Delaware), and 16 sacks (No. 10 all-time at
UD). As a senior in 2004, Mooney registered 42 tackles, including 11
for loss and 6.5 sacks. An honor student in accounting, Mooney earned his
degree this past January and was a three-time member of the ESPN The
Magazine/CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic team

First UD Scrimmage:

The Blue Hens had their first scrimmage Sat. The D-line looked pretty good & pretty much dominated the O-line. Jon Heydt (St Marks) is running with the starting team & had a nice scrimmage at WR. Parks is an animal, he just is unstoppable & will be very dominate this season. Jasperson really beefed up & looked real strong too on D! Riccio looked pretty good but still telegraphs his throws. Omar Cuff burned everybody around the outside. Samba & Mulhern didn't practice but they appear to have some depth at LB. Kametz the DT is playing DE due to the lack of depth at DE but he looked real strong there. Overall, the D really flies around the field! You can see the D getting faster each season. I think the weak link this season will be the O-line. Hopefully we'll get a transfer or 2 to help there.

DELAWARE STATE COMPLETES SWEEP OF THE FIGHTING HAWKS

Delaware State University out-slugged Maryland Eastern Shore in the final game of a three-game weekend series as the Hornets took all three from the Fighting Hawks. UMES fell behind 7-0 in the first inning and eventually fell 17-5, as DSU hit four homeruns on the afternoon.

In the first inning, the Hornets recorded seven runs on six hits, highlighted by back-to-back homerun's by Justin Wenger and Matt Folke on consecutive pitches. Starting pitcher, Sean Davis last only one-third of an inning as he gave up six runs on four hits facing only seven batters.
Daniel Sterling replaced Davis and was able to get out of the inning without to much more damage.

However, after the Hawks scored four in the top of the second to cut into the lead, Sterling allowed three more runs to cross the plate before he was replaced by Butch Mills. UMES trailed 10-4 after two innings and from that point Delaware State just piled on to walk away with the sweep.

Kevin Hill homered in the fourth inning, driving in two runs and Dan Cleary closed out the scoring with a solo-shot in the sixth. UMES used six pitchers on the afternoon. Dusty Webster performed well in the loss as he threw three innings allowing only the solo-homerun to Cleary.

The Fighting Hawks will begin a long and difficult week of play as they play host to Temple University on Tuesday afternoon as UMES begins a week-long home-stand of eight games in five days.

Delaware Cruises Past VCU 71-56, In CAA Quarterfinals

FAIRFAX, VA - Sophomore guard Tyresa Smith (Dover, DE/Polytech) scored
a game-high 14 points and dished out a career-best seven assists to lead
a balanced Blue Hen effort as the top-seeded University of Delaware
women’s basketball team cruised to a 71-56 victory over eighth-seeded Virginia Commonwealth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament
Quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University.

Senior Tiffany Young (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) came off the bench to added
13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, while sophomore guard Alena
Koshansky(Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) and senior guard Julie Sailer(Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) each scored 11 points and senior forward Tiara Malcom (Wilmington, DE/Caravel Academy) chipped in 10 as the Blue Hens improved to 24-4 on the season. Delaware, which has posted the second-most wins in a single season in school history behind only the 26-5 mark set by the 2000-01 team, will face the winner of Thursday’s second quarterfinal between No. 4 seed James Madison and No. 5 seed Towson in the first semifinal Friday at 5 p.m.

The Rams, who had defeated the Blue Hens, 68-65, in the teams’ second
regular season meeting at the Carpenter Center on February 13, ended their season with an 11-18 mark.

After Lauren Hogan scored the game’s first basket for VCU, Delaware
took control early by scoring nine straight points to take a seven-point lead at the 15:28 mark of the first half. After the Rams got within 15-9 on a lay-up by Hogan with 12:36 remaining, Delaware exploded on a 13-0 run to go up 28-9 with 7:04 left when junior guard Amanda Blackstone (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) hit a free throw.

Virginia Commonwealth closed within 32-16, but Koshansky drained a
three-pointer, Sailer converted a lay-up, and junior center Arek Deng
(London, England/Blair Academy) hit a lay-up to give the Blue Hens their largest lead of the half before Vera Chistova scored with two seconds on the clock to cut the Delaware advantage to 39-18 at the break.

The Blue Hens continuted to dominate early in the second half, scoring
six of the first eight points to extend their lead to 45-20 with 15:46 left when sophomore guard Liz Hayes (Easton, PA/Easton) buried a three-pointer. The lead grew to 26 when Sailer hit a free throw to make it 52-26 with 13:04 remaining before the Rams started to chip away. VCU slowly cut into the margin and eventually got within 63-51 when LaKea Jones nailed a three-pointer at the 3:29 mark, but Delaware responded with an 8-1 spurt to put the game out of reach. "I thought we came out strong and played our game,” Delaware ninth-year head coach Tina Martin said. “We felt with VCU’s game yesterday, we would have to
come out and play our game. It was a solid win in the opening round. We
moved the ball very well and attacked early. I'm really big on shot selection and we took very good high percentage shots today.”

In addition to leading the Blue Hens in points and assists, Smith
pulled down six rebounds and had three steals to give her a UD single-season record 92 this year, eclipsing Denise Wojciech’s previous mark of 91 set in the 1994-95 season. Malcom, who was named the CAA Player of the Year on Tuesday, added a game-high seven rebounds and dished out six assists, while Sailer went 5-of-7 from the field and Koshansky was 3-of-4 from behind the arc.

Delaware shot 48.1 (26-54) percent from the field while holding Virginia
Commonwealth to just 29.2 (19-65) percent shooting, as the Rams went
just 2-of-16 from three-point range. The Blue Hens, who have won 13 straight games away from the Carpenter Center, also hit 15-of-21 free throw attempts and dished out a season-high 22 assists.

Delaware Clinches CAA Women’s Basketball Regular Season Title

The University of Delaware women’s basketball squad clinched the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and the top seed in next week’s conference tournament with a hard-fought 59-52 victory over host James Madison Thursday night at the JMU
Convocation Center.

Tiara Malcom led four Blue Hen scorers in double figures with 19 points
and eight rebounds, Tiffany Young added 14 points, including six in a
key stretch late in the game, and Amanda Blackstone and Tyresa Smith
each chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds as Delaware (23-4,
16-2 CAA) won its third straight game.

“Our kids just played great tonight, I am so proud of them,” said
Delaware head coach Tina Martin. “I’m happy for them, they deserve a
regular season championship. It’s gratifying but there is more work to
be done. Our kids stepped up when we needed it tonight and gave us a
big psychological lift. We know that when we’re under pressure, we can get the job done. We really did a great job in the final four minutes.”

The Hens can now do no worse than tie for the league’s best record with
Old Dominion but would win any tie-breaker because they swept the
Monarchs in two meetings this season. Delaware clinched its second CAA
regular season title in three years but next week will try to snap
ODU’s streak of 13 straight league tournament titles. The Hens will be
looking to win their first conference tournament title and earn their first NCAA Tournament berth since winning the America East title in 2001

James Madison, which entered the game having won six of its last seven
games, fell to 17-10 (10-8 CAA) as the Dukes shot just 39 percent from
the field and turned the ball over 23 times. Shirley McCall led JMU
with 15 points off the bench while Leslie Dickinson added 13 points and
Meredith Alexis contributed eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Delaware won its 12th straight road game and extended its CAA road
winning streak to 10 games since last season. The Hens have also won 20
of their last 22 games.

Delaware used a 14-0 run late in the first half to take a 24-22 lead
into intermission and led for the entire second half before the Dukes
took their only lead at 42-41 when McCall nailed a three-pointer with
8:27 left to play. But the Blue Hens followed with an 8-2 run to take
the lead for good as Young scored six points during the pivotal span.

James Madison pulled to within two points when Dickinson hit one free
throw and Alexis followed with two of her own to cut the margin to
54-52 with two minutes left to play. But Smith gave the Hens some breathing room with two free throws with 1:11 to go with two free throws and added another with 15 seconds remaining to push the lead to 58-52. Smith then clinched the win when she stole the ball after missing a free throw and was fouled. She stepped up and hit another free throw with 7.3 seconds left for the final seven-point margin.

Del-State Men's Basketball Wins MEAC Regular Season Title

Delaware State University has won the MEAC regular season title with a 64-57 victory over Howard University. The Hornets finished 14-4 in the conference and 16-13 overall after playing a rugged non-conference schedule. Greg Jackson should definately get coach of the year in the conference. The man can flat-out coach. All of you guys crying at U of D games should have taken the trip down RT 1 or 13 to Dover to see the Hornets play. As a former Hornet(2 MEAC team titles in Cross Country) we've always had to fight for respect in Delaware. Del-State will now be the top seed in the MEAC Tournamet. Hopefully they can win the tournament and get a first ever NCAA bid. If not you've still done well, players and coaches

Delaware Softball Wins Season-Opener Over Norfolk State, 6-0

NORFOLK, VA -- Senior first baseman Jenn Joseph (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three University of Delaware pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Blue Hen softball team opened its 2005 season with a 6-0 win over Norfolk State Friday afternoon on the first day of the Mid-Atlantic Softballl College Umpires Association Tournament.

Delaware, which served as the home team, opened the scoring in the
bottom of the first when freshman centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored when freshman second baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) grounded out.

Senior leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) opened
the third inning with a single, and after she advanced to second on a groundout by senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly), Gardner scored when Borchers reached on an error by Spartans pitcher Natasha Steele. Senior
catcher Randi Isaacs (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem Central) followed with a single to plate Borchers and give the Blue Hens a 3-0 lead.

Delaware then put the game away by adding three runs in the fifth. Lee
led off by singling to right field, and after stealing second, she moved to third on a single by freshman pinch hitter Melissa Morris (Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central).

After Morris stole second, Borchers grounded out to score Lee and
advance Morris to third. Morris then scored while Isaacs reached on a two-base error by Norfolk State leftfielder Katie Byrne, and one out later Joseph singled to left to plate Isaacs with the Blue Hens’ sixth run of the game.

That would prove to be more than enough for the Delaware pitchers, who
combined to strike out eight and walk just one as the Blue Hens won their first season-opener since the 2000 season.

Junior Lindsay Jones (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) started and
allowed just two hits while striking out four in four innings of work to pick up the win. Sophomore Kelsey Knapp (Leechburg, PA/Kiski Area) follwed with two scoreless innings but after the Spartans loaded the bases with none out in the seventh, she was replaced by sophomore Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa), who retired the next three batters to preserve the shutout.

Isaacs finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, while Borchers
also scored a run while knocking in two and Lee went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

The Blue Hens were scheduled to open their season at 10 a.m. against
Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason, but the game was cancelled due to poor field conditions. Delaware will continue action in the tournament on Saturday, as the Blue Hens face Villanova at 10 a.m. on the campus of Norfolk State and take on San Jose State at 2 p.m. on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College.

Delaware Women’s Basketball Solidifies Hold On First Place

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team
jumped out
to a 16-point second half lead and held off a furious comeback by Old
Dominion
to defeat the Monarchs, 62-58, Friday night before a school-record
crowd at the
Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens improved to 19-2 overall and 12-0 in the Colonial
Athletic
Association by posting their 17th straight victory, tied with Gonzaga
for the
longest streak in Division I. Delaware increased its lead in the
conference to
two games and a half games over second place Old Dominion, which fell
to 13-7
overall and 9-2 in the league.

Delaware, which defeated Old Dominion, 73-70, last month in Norfolk to
snap the
Monarchs’ 122-game CAA home winning streak, became the first conference
opponent to sweep ODU since Richmond in the 1991-92 season. The Blue
Hens also
won their 11th straight home game while playing before 4772 fans, the
largest
home women’s basketball crowd in school history.

The Blue Hens jumped out to a 33-22 halftime lead, and after Old
Dominion closed
to within eight at 33-25 with 18:59 remaining, Delaware went on a 10-2
run and
took its largest advantage of the game at 43-27 with 12:08 left when
Tyresa
Smith hit a lay-up. UD still led 47-33 with 9:06 to play, but the
Monarchs’ TJ
Jordan, who finished with a career-high 28 points, nailed consecutive
three-pointers to cut the lead to 47-39 with 8:28 on the clock.

Delaware senior Tiara Malcom, who finished with a team-high 18 points,
drained
two free throws to put the Blue Hens back up 10, but Lawona Davis
converted a
three-point play and Jordan again hit back-to-back three-pointers to
bring Old
Dominion within 49-48 with 5:36 remaining. After Malcom and Jordan each
hit two
free throws, Julie Sailer hit a baseline jumper and Smith made two foul
shots
to extend Delaware’s lead to 55-50 with 2:49 to play.

The Monarchs’ Jen Nuzzo answered with a three-pointer, and after
Tiffany Young
hit two free throws for the Blue Hens at the 1:19 mark, Lyons grabbed
an
offensive rebound and scored to make it 57-55 with 25 seconds left.
However Liz
Hayes drained two free throws and, following a miss by Jordan, Alena
Koshansky
hit two more foul shots to put the Blue Hens up 61-55 with 11 seconds
remaining. Jordan hit her seventh and final three-pointer with six
seconds
left, but Koshansky put the game away by hitting one of two from the
charity
stripe with three seconds to play.

Delaware, which got 15 points and five rebounds off the bench from
Young, went
28-of-34 from the free throw line while the Monarchs were just 6-of-8
from the
charity stripe. Sailer finished with eight points and four assists,
while Smith
added six points and a pair of steals. Green had 12 points and a
game-high
eight rebounds for Old Dominion but except for Jordan no other Monarch
had more
than five points.

The Blue Hens used an early 8-0 run to take a 10-4 lead with 13:44
remaining in the first half, and extended the margin to 25-14 with 4:32 remaining on a jumper by Malcom. Old Dominion got within nine twice late in the period, but Young scored with 27 seconds on the clock to send Delaware to the half up 11 points.

The Blue Hens will return to action Sunday when Delaware hosts Virginia
Commonwealth at 4 p.m. in a game that will be televised by Comcast
SportsNet.
