My state predictions with DARK HORSES!!!!

106 Bakhsh over Guerreri
Dark Horse:: Spennato
*This weight class could go a number of ways so far Guerreri has been the cream of the crop but it’s very hard to beat the same people multiple times therefore I’m going with Bakhsh to win but don’t sleep on Spennato he’s a gamer and battle tested this year.
113 Lucian over Bellarin
Dark Horse: Moffitt
Lucian drops from 120 and gets another state title.
120 Stratton over Andrews
Dark Horse::Russ
Finals here should prove to be interesting. I think this match could be the upset of the night.
126 Copes over Mundy
Dark Horse:: Menickella
Copes finally gets his state title that he has been searching for the last few years. Mundy is super tough but Copes in my opinion is just a different level than the rest of the field at 126
132 Cordrey over Foster
Dark Horse:: Girardi
I know he’s had a bumpy ride this season but I have to think Cordrey will pull this one out. Don’t sleep on Girardi he is very capable of knocking off either finalist I have here.
138: Savage over Radecki
Dark Horse: Copeland
That’s right no typo here I think Savage is the one to stop Radecki from his goal of five state titles. Call me crazy but you heard it here first
144 Elliot over Walker
Dark Horse :: J Rovilard
This match will be closer than the last time they wrestled look for Walker to close the gap but still fall short. Elliot has one gear and that’s wide open not many can handle his pace but the one that could do it is Walker.
150 Pete over Duffy
Dark Horse:: Durham
Pete is very very tough this season I’ve been very impressed by him this season Duffy is also one tough hombre. I’d like to say my dark horse Durham 100% has the capability to beat either one of my finalist I have listed. Durham has been around forever he’s definitely battle tested and has been on a nice hot streak at the right time of the season. Don’t be surprised if he steps up and finds himself in the finals battling for a state title!
157 Limehouse over Statts
Dark Horse :: Roy
Yet another weight class where it could really go any way but I’m thinking Limehouse has been wrestling tough so I’m giving him the nod on this one.
165 Ebaugh over Norris
Dark Horse:: Ettien
This weight could go acouple different ways but I think my picks are pretty solid here
175 Spoor over Cannon
Dark Horse:: Chandler
Cannon can beat Spoor and this final is going to be one great match don’t wanna miss this one. Chandler himself is a very very well rounded wrestler how could definitely cause a ruckus at this weight
190 Moaney over Wilson
Dark Horse:: Curry
This is Moaney title to lose. I think he’s the cream of the crop in this bracket. Wilson is tough and Curry has a punchers chance so nothing is in stone
215 Miller vs Donahue
Dark Horse:: Lockett
Miller is a lock here I have him across from Donahue but I wouldn’t be the last bit surprised if you don’t find Lockett in the finals vs Miller.
HWT Denigusis over Juarquin
Dark Horse:: Baynard
Denigusis is just to tough it’s his title to lose but I say he comes up big and brings home a state title!
Well those are my picks for this years state tournament tell me whatcha think…

Day 1 thoughts

Blue Hens: Penn and St. Georges Strong. Middletown and Christiana probably higher in team score now than I would have expected, great on them. Mazurek from Middletown upset Branch from AI in final overtime; and Tyler from WP at 190 was seeded 12th and beat the 4th and 5th seed consecutively probably causing the huge swing in team points.

Indy: 9 wrestlers at 120? Id expect that at 106, not sure how I feel about that. Team score as expected - but exciting race between Sals, St. Marks, and DMA. DMA 165 Macdonell over Caravels Sakers and made semis probably the most notable upset in this tournament today.

Henlopen: Not really sure how to quantify the Team scoring, Its Centrals game to lose but where one would have expected Cape or maybe even CR to be the challenger; Smyrna has maintained position sending 8 into the Semis, Second only to Centrals 9. If Central has a tough morning and Smyrna a strong one - this could be a photo finish. Also nothing too too crazy on the upset side of things. Rosan from Polytech pinned IR's Knight; Risper from Woodbridge beat Wheeler from Cape; and Villareal Gomez from Milford beat Centrals Steele.

Also shoutout to the ladies running with the boys this weekend; Radecki is top 8 at 106, next win will get her into top 6. Hurley from Dickenson and Perez from Glasgow meet head to head tomorrow with the winner Guaranteed top 8; Derby from St georges is 1-1 and next match is to get into the top 8; Littleton from Milford at 113 is in the top 8, with next match to get into the top 6. King and Klecan from St. Andrews did go 0-2 at 132 and 38 respectively but still kudos for stepping up for their team. Apologies if I missed anyone.

Please note by "upset" I simply mean by seed and not any personal judgement on the individuals. I also didn't consider any 5 seed over 4 notable but there were several.

Top Teams in the Henlopen Conference

In the North
Dover 4-1
Smyrna 4-2
Caesar 5-3
Sussex Tech 5-2
Cape 3-3
Milford 4-3
Sussex Central 3-3
Poly Tech 2-4

In the South
Lake 6-0
Seaford 6-0
Early College 4-3
Woodbridge 3-2
Delmar 3-4
Indian River 1-3
Sussex Academy 0-6

In the North Dover is the favorite. Dover lost was to Stephen Decatur in an exciting game at the Governor's Challenge. They had a hard fought battle with their rival Caesar Rodney. Smyrna has been improving since the beginning of the season. Sussex Tech had a very good Governor Challenge. Caesar Rodney also showing promise. They lost to an Odessa team that is undefeated and lost to Dover by 6pts. Milford is up and down. Cape beat Sussex Central but lost their super freshman to an injury. They have struggled without him. Sussex Central also have struggled early with division losses to Smyrna and Cape. Poly Tech is in a rebuilding mode with the lost of Little and their senior core. Little will play his old team on Thursday.

In the South Lake Forest is out of the box with a fast start. They have had some tight games with Salisbury School and Delmar. They crushed Cape and beat Woodbridge. Seaford has gotten of to a good start after losing so many transfers. They had some tough road games against Early College and Laurel. Both games went down to the wire. The Blue Jays will make noise in the South. Woodbridge has more depth this year and will be a tough match up for many of their south opponents. Early College will surprise a lot of people this year. I predict them in the top 4 in the south and making the playoffs this year. Laurel will be very competitive in the South. They had a hard Governor's Challenge this year but I expect them to recover and make a run. Delmar has played some tough game early. They had Lake Forest down and lost a close game and also lost a close one to Woodbridge. Indian River is rebuilding this year after losing some many seniors and their coach. Sussex Academy will give 100 percent effort every time they step on the court.

In my opinion Dover will be the favorite in the North with Smyrna and Caesar Rodney pushing them. In the South I believe Seaford and Lake Forest are the early season favorites with Early College, Woodbridge and Laurel pushing them. Big Games this week and next week will start to clear the picture of each division. Give me your thoughts?
